OVM  local drives not seen - SAS drive issue

OVM 3.1.1
Dell R510 12 SAS Drives in Raid 5
I'm trying to set up an r510 for a test env, and after reading through the forums, I found that it says SAS drives can't be used.
6.4.3. Local SAS Hard Disks Not Supported for Storage
But that seems crazy. They are in Raid 5. I'm not trying to access them individually. They show up as a Physical Disk, but they don't show up when I create repository.
I've went through this note:
Oracle VM 3.0.3 - Using several local disks
and cleaned up everything. Deleted the 1 partition, ensured multipathing worked, and the storage disk array appears.
Doesn't make since that a RAID 5 volume whether SAS or IDE would viewed differently. The "drive" is presented through the controller. It could be my controller. I've heard others said it works. Some say it works with 3.0.3.

Ok, I finally go it to show up. When I created the server pool, I didn't notice that it had issues adding the server with local disks. Had a hostname lookup issue. Anyway, I can see the disk now, but have the following error:
Fri Oct 19 14:15:41 EDT 2012] OVMAPI_4010E Attempt to send command: storage_plugin_createFileSystem to server: oravms02 failed. OVMAPI_4004E Server Failed Command: storage_plugin_createFileSystem oracle.ocfs2.OCFS2.OCFS2Plugin 0004fb000005000033f2d7b408ba45eb /dev/mapper/36782bcb0630d4700181325fb07f3792e 0, Status: org.apache.xmlrpc.XmlRpcException: OSCPlugin.InvalidValueEx:'The backing device /dev/mapper/36782bcb0630d4700181325fb07f3792e is not allowed to contain partitions'
If I run fdisk /dev/sdb and issue print command, there are no partitions displayed.
I look in /dev/mapper and see the following
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 252, 0 Oct 18 16:44 36782bcb0630d4700181325fb07f3792e
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 252, 1 Oct 18 16:44 36782bcb0630d4700181325fb07f3792ep1
I used "dmsetup remove /dev/mapper/36782bcb0630d4700181325fb07f3792ep1"
Now, I can create the repository.

  • [Solved] External USB 3.0 drive not seen under /dev/sd*

Ok, thought this would be easy but for some reason I cant get arch to see the physical drive. Its a new Seagate 2TB external USB 3.0 drive. I connected it to a windows laptop and it was quickly recognized (ntfs). I then installed ntfs-3g but still cant see it. I then formatted it under windows as ext4, but its still not seen. I tried this with 2 arch PC's, both the same issue. I seen a few other posts and tried a few things like making sure the mod xhci_hcd was running. I have the latest updates on each system. fdisk -l does not show the device at all! I can see and boot to other USB devices fine just not this one, maybe since its USB3.0??
I noticed here, they talk about maybe USB3 is broke in the new kernels, after 3.10.2 maybe?
    Similar issue: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=126299
    Possible bug: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/36296
However, I would think that by now, this would have been fixed as USB3.0 is more common? Other than trying to find a OLD 3.10.2 kernel any other advice?

Awesome, THANKS!! Yes I got it to work following this and specifically Da_Coynul's post:
I was able to get my external drive working again by telling the usb-storage module to ignore uas for the device. Here is how to do it:
First, create a file named ignore_uas.conf in the /etc/modprobe.d directory containing the following*:
    options usb-storage quirks=Vendor_ID:Product_ID:u
*(substitute your actual Vendor_ID and Product_ID obtained from the lsusb -v command).
    Next, regenerate your inital ramdisk:
    # mkinitcpio -p linux
    Finally, reboot your computer.
Although this is not a solution to broken uas, at least it will let you use your drive as before hmm

Thanks everyone...Now I can see the drive, and will work on formatting it with XFS...

  • New internal hard drive not seen in disk utility

    Hi
I replaced my hard drive with a western digital black edition but when I use it as an internal it is not seen by the disk utility.
I have installed and booked from the new drive using USB so it doesn't seem faulty.
When I use the old drive as an internal it works so I don't know what's going wrong.
I have had a look at similar problems but nothing I have tried has helped.

It may be the internal connecting cable that is the problem.  If you can install the new HDD in an enclosure, connect it to the MBP, then see if you recognize it using the OSX installation disk.  If so, the internal connector should be replaced.
    Ciao.

  • Dvd drive not seen in boot camp

I just installed Windows 8.1 in Boot Camp.  However, windows does not seen the internal DVD drive.  It is not even in Device Manager.  I have installed the latest Apple drivers.  Any help would be appreciated.

  • Samsung Pro 840 SSD Dual Hard Drives - 2nd Hard Drive Not Seen

Hello all and thanks for taking the time to read this post and help out. For my christmas gift to myself, I purchased a brand new 2012 Mac Mini and upgraded the processor to 2.6. I then went online to NewEgg and purchased 2 Samsung Pro 840 256GB hard Drives. Finally I went over to iFixit and purchased the addtional SATA drive connector with their add a drive kit.
Pulled the Mac Mini apart following the instructions and added the second hard drive. I also removed the original 1TB drive so that I now had 2 Samsung 840 Pro 256 GB SSD drives installed. Plugged in power, monitor, had my new bluetooth keyboard and was madly pressing command r. Turns out that bluetooth was not working for I went a purchased an additional keyboard at Best Buy. Plugged it in, used command r and it found the Apple servers and downloaded the OS. However, it only saw one drive.
After the install, still only saw one drive. The Primary. Opened the Mini up again, checked everything, reassembled, no dice. Pulled it apart a third time, and decided to change the secondard additional drive to the original 1 TB drive. So now I got a 256 SSD and a 1TB. Boot the OS, it sees the Hard Drive so I am thiking ok the SATA cable is fine.
Next day I take the second SSD and put it in my alienware computer. Windows sees the hard drive immediatly. So I am like Hmm. Hard Drive must work, SATA cable works, so why does Hard Drive and SATA cable not work together.
I posted to Samsung who said, well if widows sees the Hard Drive its not the Hard Drive. Contact Apple
I posted to iFixit and am waiting on a response.
I am posting here before I get on and call Apple. I am away on business till Friday anyway. Any help or suggestions is appreciated.

I guess Final Update. I switched the Hard Drives around. I put the First Samsung 840 Pro 256 GB SSD as the Second Hard Drive. I then put the Second Samsung 840 Pro 256 GB SSD as the Primary Drive. This time Disk Utility sees it but says there is an error. When I go to fix the error it flashed briefly does whatever and it is still red. Repeated 3 times.
I then took my other Samsung 830 256 GB SSD and what do you know, the same error. Disk Error. When I go to fix the error it flashed briefly does whatever and it is still red. Repeated 3 times. So I am thinking ***. I turn off my Alienware computer, install both the 830 and the 840 HDs and poof:
You can see that Windows 8 picked up both Samsung Drives. So I guess at this point the only thing to do is suck it up and have the MacMini Server that I am stuck with as opposed to the MacMini Server I bought.

  • Satellite A - DVD drive not seen by Windows Explorer

THe DVD deive on D is not seen by windows explorer. It used to work but has now disappeared. The dvd hardwars starts up at boot then ceases.
    Any ideas anyone?

Try removing the CD/DVD Filters from the Registry.
When CD/DVD related software is installed (such as iTunes, Nero, virtual CD software), they install filters into the registry, which can cause compatibility problems.
    1) Run Regedit (Start -> Run -> Regedit)
    2) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    3) In the right pane, delete the "UpperFilters" key, and delete the "LowerFilters" key.
    4) Reboot.
If your CD/DVD programs stop working, you will need to reinstall them (preferably with an updated version).
This utility can remove the filters for you:

  • TM Drive not seen for "Browse"

I restored my home folder from a TM backup. Worked fine. I now want to continue with Time Machine but TM doesn't see the drive as containing backups! I just restored from it! It does see the drive if I want to start over but if I choose "Choose Time Machine Disk to Browse" it sees nothing. The drive is a USB drive plugged into my mac.

Try a +*Repair Disk+* per #A5 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
If that doesn't help, try a "full reset" per #A4 there.
By the way, your entire home folder will be backed-up again on your next Time Machine backup.

  • X4200 server, is it possible to use SATA drives instead of SAS drives

    Hello,
We are planning to purchase X4200 servers; According to documentation, they use SAS drive, which are quite expensive. So is it possible to use SATA drives? I read somewhere that their interface is similar and SATA can work with SAS.
    Thanks
    Steve

    Hello,
I don't see any SATA drives listed for the X4200.
    To quote rukbat:
"If there is any sort of warranty or service contract coverage on that box,
you will need to use Sun parts if you hope to maintain active coverage
for that warranty or contract. Parts from third-party sellers may invalidate
or suspend the coverage for as long as they are in the chassis."

  • Even local drives not seen by Bridge CS6 (64bit)

    Hi,
I am having problems with Bridge CS6 unable to find any drives in the system as well as Network Drives. The funny thing is I can see all local and Network Drives in Bridge in the Folders Panel as well as in Edit->Camera Raw Preferences, but when I try Edit ->Preferences->Cache-> Choose, all I see is Desktop & \User Folder. No local drives or network drives. I am running Bridge as an Adminstrator, and  Windows 7 Professional, 64Bit. I do not have any problems whatsoever in other CS6 applications like Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Indesign, Fireworks, Dreamweaver etc.
Please see the screen shot below:
    What hurts? TIA.

  • New Hard Drive Not seen by DU

    I have PPC 2.0 model 7.3 G5
Suspecting Hard drive errors, I bought 2 new WD5000AAkX drives to install into my G5. The machine was configured with a system drive and secondary drive. Althogh SATAIII manufactuers specs indicate backwards compatible to SATA I.
Both of the old drives worked have been backed up. Although a strange occurance of the computer turning off led me to suspect the system drive may be failing soon. My secondary drive, I erased and installed Leopard and updated to 10.5.8. I then removed the old drives and swapped in the new ones.
I did not format either of the new drives. I presumed could format with install DVD from Disc Utility.
I installed both new drives, and powered on. The Install DVD shows, but the DU doesn't see the manufacturer info or the drives at all.
I then swapped back my old secondary drive with the operating system back in Bay2 and via start up disc, was able to boot from there, but DU still did not see the new unformatted drive in Bay1
Ok I thought, how bout that p-ram button.. tried that.. unplugged for 10 mins.. even pushed power button as plugging in. Tried Safe mode.. Still the machine doesn't see these drives.. and the cables all appear to be working because that older 2nd drive works in either Bay.
I have now my older second drive in Bay1 and running, with the other new drive in bay 2, but DU still doesn't see the new Bay2 drive..
My next option is to borrow a universal Drive adapter and format them from my Macbook Pro.
Just wanted to ask if there's something I'm missing?
I also have Tiger start up discs, perhaps that may help format both new drives if I reswapped them in to machine? (lessoning the need for an adapter)
Thanks in advance for any insight to this matter.

Put a jumper accross pins 5 and 6 (set OPT 1) and the drives should be seen without issue.

  • External hard drive not seen in disk utility but can be seen in system profiler

    HI
i have a 500gb western digital my passport, its been working fine, since i have used it on a windows machine, i can no longer get it to be recognised in finder. The light is flashing on the side and i can see it under USB in sytem profiler. I cant see it in disk utility. i cant format as it has photos etc loaded
    cheers

An update for anyone who can help me:
I have tried the external hard drive in other computers (mac and windows), each time I get the same problem above.
I have removed the HD from the enclosure and purchased a docking station for it (3.5" SATA). When I plug it in to the laptop it disconnects itself straight away before it is visible. With the windows computers it installs the drivers and says that the device is ready to use, then disconnects before it shows up.
As the HD is not visible there is no option to re-format or anything.
This is very frustrating as I was using the HD with no issues and it randomly disconnected and I have not been able to access since.
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • MacBook Pro hard drive not seen.

My MacBook Pro will not let me partition my new hard drive. It let's me select it in disk utility but when I try to partition or erase I get an error and when I tried to back it up from time machine the hard drive doesn't even show up as an option to select. I put my old hard drive in and everything work just fine, so I don't know what's going on.

    Kimako,
if you’re able to partition it externally, but you’re not able to partition it internally, then there might be an issue with your MacBook Pro’s internal SATA cable.

  • Webcam and usb drive not working--possible hardware issue?

    Hello,
I recently purchased a Lenovo ideapad U510 with Windows 8. I bought it as a returned machine but the Staples employee didn't know why it had been returned and thought it was just because the buyer didn't like Windows 8. When I first set it up I kept getting an error message that my usb device was not recognized, even though I had never plugged anything in. As I was leaving the country, I dismissed the issue and decided to deal w/ it when I returned to the US, since my other usb drives worked fine.
However, later my integrated webcam stopped working as well. It worked one time when I used Skype but not after that. I checked online forums for possible solutions, and most said I needed to download an updated driver. I didn't think this was the issue b/c when I went to device manager and tried to update my driver for the easycam, it said I already had the most up-to-date driver. I have uninstalled drivers, downloaded and re-installed drivers, and even refreshed my computer, all to no avail.
Here are the error messages I receive:
In device manager>view>show hidden devices>imaging devices>Lenovo EasyCamera, device status says
Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)
To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer.
When I try to run the Bison setup: Lenovo EasyCam has not found!
When I try to run the Chicony setup: Setup failed! Please Plugin camera and install driver again!
So, I'm thinking it's not a driver issue, but I'm not a techie and don't know what else it could be. Wondering if the usb problem and webcam problem are connected. Found another forum post that said maybe the webcam is not connected to the motherboard...suggestions?
Thank you in advance for your help.

I am certain it is a hardware issue from the problems youre describing. I would contact Lenovo. They may try to have you purchase their "software" support, but don't let them. I had wifi issues and they tried to make me spend $90 because I was too lazy to figure it out on my own.
Make sure when you're calling support that you tell them that you restored to factory default and before you send your computer in, back up your data. Also tell them that it's a new computer and you do not want to pay for shipping... They will most likely comp you shipping in both directions.

  • Floppy Drive not seen by Mt. Lion OS

Since I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion (10.8.4), my iTunes turns on and off by itself.  Also, floppy drive is no longer recognized by  iDVD or iTunes, nor will it recognize setup software disks.  I also run Parallels Desktop for MAC - 7.  This virtual drive runs Windows XP.  The floppy drive works just fine with Windows Media Player.  Any idea how to turn on Mt. Lion to see the floppy drilve?

Just connecting a USB floppy drive to Mountain Lion (in my case 10.8.4) will not mount anything to the Desktop -- until you insert a floppy disk. Mine is a SmartDisk VST Floppy Drive Titanium (FDUSB-TM) from the late 1990's. No installable drivers. Just works with OS X usb. They are out of business.

  • G$ FW800 stock optical drive not seen in System Profile - is it daid?

I added a USB PCI card (2.0) to my FW and shifted some files (Migration Assistant) to my FW by Firewire from an eMac and then I wanted to run Diskwarrior to sort it all out. My CDW/DVDR wouldn't open, either with the eject key or through Toast. Not recognized in Toast. Not recognized in System Profile either. I reset the PMU (cause I can), then tried to boot the DW CD from a Firewire LaCie drive. No good. I finally got the CD to start the FW by using "alt" on startup and waiting for it to find DW but after running all the tests, my drive still seems to be dead. Any more resets or something I can try?
Also, I took the card out and tried again but no good. Are the circuits for the drive and PCI somehow related? Did I cook a controller or something?
Guys, what's the scoop? or is it poop?

Ok, that's it. I read a few posts in the "...SuperDrive won't accept my CD.." section. and it seems some people are just swapping optical drives like mad, ready to accept that the kit is crap, and "...oh, well, I sure hope this one works better...".
But one guy had the brains to have a look inside. Turns out dust had accumulated in the drive and on the connectors, and when he cleaned them, and unplugged and replugged them, it worked fine. So that's what I did. Took it out and put it back in. Amazing the stuff I cleared out! I also un- and re-plugged the power cable and the data ribbon at the mutha board and bingo!. We have disk, and I can breathe again.
Recommend to others they pretend they've bought a new drive, do a remove and reinstall and be very fastidious. You may not need a new one after all. I just love it that stuff can still be FIXED!
Thanks to Lou and all of you who share your experiences. It's like my brain is suddenly soooo huge...
