OVM P2V

Hi guys.
In a weeks' time I will have to migrate ovm's from an OVM 3.0.3 environment to a OVM 3.1.1 environment.
I'm testing possible migration methods. So far my p2v of an ovm is not going as planned.
I have attach the 3.1.1 OVMS iso to my 3.0.3 VM, changed the boot order so that it boots of the cdrom first.
After booting my 3.0.3 vm I get the standard options to install , p2v or rescue.
I the type p2v and press enter. The boot process continue as if the p2v process is in progress and then it just grinds to a halt.
Have any of you successfully p2v (v2v) a ovm to another ovm environment?
What is the best method of migrating OVM vm's to another OVM environment?
Any help will be appreciated.

If 2 virtual systems wants to talk to each other - in vmware thru virtual switch itis possible.
Using the switch they can talk to each other without using the real NIC thus reducing the overhead.
Thats what i'm tryiing to do in oracle vm.
Doing snapshot using LVM concept is again too much space consuming thing unlike VMware.

Answer: The only way I have done this is to import the the Oracle VM into VMware ESX with VMware P2V conversion. The one key thing you have to make sure of here is that if it is a Linux Virtual machine that you are moving to VMware you must start the Virtual Machine in a standard no Xen kernel before you do the P2V conversion as VMware will choke on the any Xen kernel.

Answer: I would strongly recommend that you keep the Manager and Servers on the same version.
I know for doing upgrades the Manager should be upgraded first and then the servers can be upgraded. See section 5.1 in the upgrade document. http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E35328_01/E35330/E35330.pdf

IO Error when using p2v

I'm using Ovm 3.2.2 p2v to convert a Windows 2008 machine.
By the end of the download the conversion fails with: IOErrror [Errno 5] Input/output error
This is part of the exception shown on on the physical machine been converted:

ASE server on OVM

Hello,
I would like to know if anyone is running SAP/Sybase ASE server on OVM(Oracle Virtual Machine), if yes then if any issues encountered running ASE on the Virtual Environment? What version of ASEs are you running on the Virtual OVM environment?
Would OVM support ASE version 12.0.x, 12.5.x and 15.0.3(I know these are EOL) but would like to know if any SAP/Sybase customer is running these versions on OVM>
Would there be any license issues with running these servers in OVM after P2V? I could get the ASE checkout the license, would there be any issues with the license options down the line or with SAP support of these ASEs on OVM?
I would appreciate any feedback.

Ejaj,
OVM is considered a sub-capacity environment for ASE deployments.
As the ASE versions themselves are EOL, they cannot be supported by SAP in that environment regardless, should any issues arise, including license issues, unless an upgrade is performed and the proper licenses obtained.
Please check with your sales representative to confirm this.

P2V Template Files to actual VM

Hi Everyone, I have OVM 3.0.3 and have P2V'd a 3TB system which is made up of 20 Distinct disks.
It imported the system as a template of course and from there normally I would create a VM from this template, in a sense duplicating all of the disks. But since its so large I dont have any easy way of getting another 3Tb. I dont want the template really and just want the template to turn into a VM itself. Is there any easy way of simply moving each of the *.img files into the VirtualDisks portion of the Repository? Or since I have 20, I could probably make a copy of each one as I have enough space to do that. Have the disk be recognized as a new disk that could be added to a VM and then remove the original one from the template. That might be a cleaner method.
Is this at all possible?

Is your storage repo a OCFS2 LUN of some type? If so, cloning the template shouldnt actually consume another 3TB of storage, once you have a new VM cloned, you can then delete the template and associated disks.
If your SR is NFS, then your only option would be to manually mv the disk images, and create a Virtualmachine (and vm.cfg) to use those moved disks, then refresh the storage repository to have it picked up by OVM Manager

I ve tried giving full permissions on for /OVS on Server but invain.

How to configure multiple IP-Adresses on one NIC in OVM

we have some OVM Servers 2.2.1 installed. They all have three NICs in them (eth0-2). For eth0 and eth2 we need multiple IP-Adresses configured to work with our storage solution. The configuration should look like this:
eth0:0 - 192.168.31.x
eth0:1 - 192.168.33.x
eth1 - 192.168.0.x
eth2:0 - 192.168.32.x
eth2:1 - 192.168.34.x
I tried creating gonfig files ifcfg-eth0:0 in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts with the following content
DEVICE=eth0:0
BOOTPROTO=static
ONBOOT=yes
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
IPADDR=192.168.31.3
TYPE=Ethernet
HWADDR=00:1b:21:06:f0:fa
But it does not work. Neither eth0:0 nore an additional xenbr is configured when i restart.
I can configure multiple ip addresses for xenbr0 by calling something like "ifconfig xenbr0 192.168.31.x". But these settings get lost as sonn as i reboot the server.
I have already searched google, forums and blogs for a solution but could not find one. I thought that this should be a pretty common task. In "normal" linux it is not an issue at all.
Has somebody any experience with a setup like this? I would really apreciate your help.

Hi,
configuring IP aliasses seems to work the same way like configuring VLANs. You will have to configure the appropriate bridges at system startup manually.
E.g. this little script is what I use to configure VLANs and briges on my OVM:

This script is run at startup by init using this startup skript in /etc/init.d, which is what I think you're missing as you can already seem to bring up the needed IPs manually - you'd have to change the chkconfig accordingly, that is make sure that the config script gets startet after the network has been brought up, like this: # chkconfig: 2345 11 91

OVM Server takes long time to boot up - gets stuck for minutes after joining domain

Server takes a long time to reboot. Seems to get stuck for 8-10 minutes every time after joining domain.

Lost connection between ovm-manager and ovm-server (ovm 3.1)

Hi,
I have a manager as a VM on my laptop and a physical server as an ovm-server. Everything is fine when i boot the server but after some time, the manager stop to show the information from the server. in the ovs-agent log file the following messages are repeated regulary

I did not reboot neither the server nor the manager. No IP change. Rebooting the manager has no effect.
The only way to restore communication is to restart the ovs-agent on the server, but this restart disable the network card. I must be physical on the server to restart the network.

The are many steps to verify:
Verify with your firewall on the Oracle VM Manager system (service iptables stop).
Verify with a ping between OVM Manager and OVM Server using the IP Address and using the hostname for each one (from OVM Manager : ping ovm-server ; and from OVM Server: ping ovm-manager).

How to configure local disk on OVM Server as storage space to create VMs

Hello,
We have installed OVM Server 3.1.1 on a machine that has 250 GB of Hard disk space [Single disk].
While installing used an option - Remove all partitions and create a new default partition layout.
Around 4GB has been used and remaining 246 GB is left as free space.
From OVM Manager - the server is discovered but didn't discovered the physical disk [i.e. remaining 246 GB raw disk space].
Can someone help me to understand how to use local disk as storage space for creating and running VM's.

You can? You've used every conceivable BIOS out there? You must really be full of yourself. There is absolutely no BIOS that I know of that gives this basic function. BIOSs do not "hard partition" anything. A "BIOS" is not made for such things. Do you even know what "BIOS" stands for?
I wonder why there is some many wanting to do this and are having problems.... I mean if it is such a straight forward thing to do..... It must be down right "intuitive".
You maybe speaking of a RAID "BIOS" but you obviously think you're not. Some motherboards have integrated RAID abilities. Intel RST comes to mind... BUT this isn't a feature of a MOTHERBOARD BIOS.
I've got some $50,000 servers that will not break a single hard drive up into multiple logical drives..... Now, I haven't worked on a "Stinkpad" for many years. Don't want to. However, I have never seen one that would do what you're saying you're doing.
You maybe trying to help.... but you're leading people down a wrong path.
Its just as easy to run virtual box and use the virtual box templates for Oracle VM. In fact, its more practical if you want to run Oracle VM on a laptop for testing purposes than blowing everything away and attempting to setup different LUNS on a single hard drive.

Although it's more reliable to use a separate location (such as an NFS share) for a storage repository, you can use a local disk of your Oracle VM Server instead, thus taking advantage of the local storage option. Beware, though: Oracle VM Server 3.0 doesn't allow you to utilize the unused space on the physical disk it's installed on. For local storage, you'll need at least one more physical disk. In other words, you'll need a total of two disks at minimum on your Oracle VM Server host if you want to use local storage. In practice, though, local storage is not a primary use case. The major downside to this approach is that local storage, by definition, cannot be shared between different servers.

How to start virtual OVM Manager and restore server pool which hosts it?

It had to happen... the day I migrate our OVM Manager from an ESX host into an Oracle VM, we have a massive NetApp outage, and everything fails to come back. As a result of having lock errors when trying to start any VMs I noted on the forum various solutions and ended up following the steps concerning stopping ovs-agent and removal of /etc/ovs-agent/db/* on all the servers. Next I re-added the repo to all the servers using repos.py, but of course now none of the servers are in a pool so the --list command shows them as [R] rather than [*], and the /OVS directory is not yet mapped. So the next stage, according to the instructions which I am following, describes using the 'Restore' option in the OVM Manager GUI. Given that /OVS is not mounted and all of the servers are now config-less, I can't see how I can start the OVM Manager VM to get to the aforementioned "restore" option...
Thank Jeebus I kept the ESX copy of OVM manager on (but powered down), as I was able to fire it up and do the restore, and now everything is hunky dory. However, this is our Dev platform and I was going to build the Prod platform and deploy OVM Manager straight into the OVM architecture via the template, rather than having it on ESX, but this issue on the Dev install has made me think twice about the mobius nature of managing the VM architecture from within the VM architecture...
I am assuming I am missing some sort of commandline knowledge, so... given:
- empty db directory
- root repos [R] on all servers
- as yet unmapped /OVS
...how to get the server pool up and get something back into /OVS, and then start my OVM Manager VM so I can 'restore'? Is it even possible? because if it isn't, I'll be blowed if the Prod OVM manager is going to get deployed like this...
And no, there's no money in the budget for extra tin just to sit there running the OVM Manager and nothing else.

Hardware virtualized (HVM) guests with Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel always use paravirtualized (PV) drivers
Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel version kernel-uek-2.6.32-100.34.1 adds support for paravirtualized drivers in a HVM guest on Oracle VM. Starting with this kernel version, the default is to present only paravirtualized drivers when running in a hardware virtualized guest. To run kernel-uek --including the drivers-- fully hardware virtualized, an additional kernel boot parameter "xen_emul_unplug=never" must be added to the boot parameters in /etc/grub.conf:
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.32-100.34.1.el5uek ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 xen_emul_unplug=never
Adding this kernel boot parameter makes the kernel also present the emulated drivers as it did before (e.g. the 8139cp network driver). "
Update "grub.conf" to boot non-UEK kernel,

I have had success importing VirtualBox images of OEL 6.4, but I am unable to import Solaris 11 VMs to OVM. When I import a Solaris 11 VM, the grub menu comes up. I select Solaris 11 and press enter. The OS begins to boot and progresses through to this point:

It is at this point that console window in OVM goes black and OVM registers the shutdown of the VM. I have not been able to get the VM to boot any further through the sequence.
Can you give me some grub configuration changes to try?
