OVM server clock issue

Hi,
Does anyone has any problem with the OVM server 2.1.2 system clock issue? The clock is getting the wrong time even if I used ntp server. Any idea why? Thank in advance.

Hey,
You manually set the clock initially and then use these command
# /etc/sysconfig/clock sets whether the hardware clock is stored as UTC or local time.
# Symlink /etc/localtime to /usr/share/zoneinfo/... to set your timezone.
# Run ``date MMDDhhmm'' to set the current system date/time.
# Type ``/sbin/hwclock --systohc [--utc]'' to set the hardware clock.
Now restart the ntpd service..
Do you h ave ntpd server - to which all other server refer to and synch time ?

  • OVM Server 3.2.1 install reboots server

I have been trying to install OVM Server on an IBM xSeries 336 server. OVM Server 2.2.1 was previously installed on this server.
Trying to install 3.2.1 now and I get to the splash screen booting from the CD. I press [Enter] to begin the installation. Once the process reaches the point of 'Loading SCSI driver', the server reboots. I have tested the media on other machines without issue. I have also tested the server with OVM Server 2.2.1 media and the install progresses normally to the end.
I suspect there are missing drivers causing the install to fail. Is there a way to load the missing drivers during the install process?
    Thanks in advance,
UPDATE: I have successfully installed OVM Server 3.0.2... Not exactly what I wanted but....

Oracle VM 3 is entirely different from 2.2.1.
take a look at the release notes for 3.2.1 There are few instances in which you have to specify different boot parameters for the installation to work.
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E35328_01/E35329/E35329.pdf
You might have a MEGARAID product.
If you are installing Oracle VM Server on a Sun Fire X4800, you must provide extra parameters when
booting from the installation media (CDROM or ISO file), or when using a kickstart installation. These
parameters allow the megaraid_sas driver to load correctly.
If booting from the installation media, press F2 when the initial boot screen is displayed and provide the
following additional parameters as part of the boot command:
    mboot.c32 xen.gz extra_guest_irqs=64,2048 nr_irqs=2048 --- vmlinuz --- initrd.img
If using a kickstart installation, add the additional kernel parameters to the PXE configuration file.

  • VM template image missing from OVM Server 2.2.0

    Hi,
We have configured couple of linux OVM images on OVM server 2.20. These images were running successfully from 1 month , suddenly we found 1 of the VM image missing from the /OVS/running_pool directory. Can you let me know if there is any bug in OVM 2.20 as we are running 100 of VM's and VM's image missing could be big issue in future.

    Welcome to the forums !
The scripts should be available in the companion directory of the CD

  • Adding an OVM server back into OVM Manager after a reload

We have created a sandbox environment to test Oracle virtualization and had 2 physical servers setup. One running Oracle OVM and the other Oracle Linux. The Oracle Linux box had OVM Manager installed and was using local storage for the repository.
After about a month of running the Oracle Linux box was reloaded without saving any of the OVM Manager configuration information. After reloading the Oracle Linux box and installing OVM Manager my first issue was adding the OVM server back into a pool. We were getting the error that it was already being managed by another host. After a quick search of the Oracle forum I found a post suggesting that we stop the ovs-agent on the OVM box and remove a file.
    These were the commands:
    # service ovs-agent stop
    # rm /etc/ovs-agent/db/server
    # service ovs-agent start
After doing this I was able to discover and add the server into a pool. The next issue was when I went to look at the virtual machines hosted on the OVM machine. All 6 of the virtual machines that were created now show as "orphan_004fb0000060000...". In digging around I noticed that the repository for the local storage was not setup so when I go to try add the local disk back as a repository and I select "create a data repository: select physical disk" it comes back as blank.
If I click the storage tab and look under local file systems I see the disk and it has location repository specified and server listed under presented servers.
I am thinking the mapping is somehow messed up after adding the host back to a new OVM Manager and I need to relink the storage to the repository but am a little lost as to how to accomplish this.
I am trying to avoid reloading the entire OVM server so I don't lose the work already done with the existing virtual machines.

To answer your second question first, It is an unclustered server pool.

Any advice that can help me find the way to upgrade my servers?
    Thanks in advance,
    Andrés L.

    Hi,
I tried "yum update -y" and after reboot I encountered a kernel panic after the following message: switchroot: mount failed: No such file or directory.
So I got to reinstall ovm 3.0.3 from scratch.
Maybe the hard disk drivers in 3.1.1 kernel version (uek2) are not compatible with my server disks.
If someone has an accurate explanation to this issue, could be helpfull.
    Best Regards,
    Andres Loaiza.

When try to run ovs-agent-setup command, it fails telling that ovm server has not good configuration and exits!!
ovs-agent ** ERROR: The vds service is not configured on the primary domain
Trying to fix by resetting factory default configuration, then poweroff domain and poweron aain but nothing!! I got same error and ovs-agent service is in maintenance.
Now we have create ldoms and servers are in production!! We cannot reset configuration now.
Is-it possible to deploy OVM manager, fix ovs-agent issue without impacting actual vm??? How to do this? I assume that vm created with ldm commande can not be provision with ovm manager.
    Please help!!

    Hi,
Windows Server 2008 R2 supports two mutually exclusive methods for setting quotas on the amount of file system resources a user can use—disk quotas or directory quotas. Disk quotas are applied to specific users and limit the amount of disk space that user can
use on a particular volume. Directory quotas are applied to all users and limit the amount of disk space that users can use in a particular folder and its subfolders.
I do a test on my pc and find there is no priority between the two quotas, it depends on which quota is smaller. So user A can only save 1 GB files in the folder.

  • OVM server Discovery fails

When I attempt to discover one of my OVM servers I'm getting a python(?) error during the storage discovery phase.
Anyone have any ideas how to resolve this?
    Thanks!

    End of Job
    ----------

This is usually due to either of the following issues (not enough information to determine if this is your problem):
    1. The IP addresses you are using as the IPs for the Oracle VM servers being discovered are somehow incorrect. For instance, I sometimes typo one of the octets in the IP address IE: I meant to type 10.11.12.100, but instead messed up the third octet by typing a "21" instead of a "12" (just an example).
    2. The password you provided for the "Oracle VM Agent Password" in the discovery dialog is incorrect. There are several reasons this may be happening, but the way to ensure the ovs-agent has the same password you think it should is by logging into each Oracle VM server and changing the ovs-agent password for BOTH "admin" AND "oracle" users. This is done using the following command on each Oracle VM server:
    /usr/sbin/ovs-agent-passwd admin
    /usr/sbin/ovs-agent-passwd oracle
Both of the above will prompt for a password - use the same password for both and ensure you do this on all your Oracle VM servers.
Here is how you verify that the passwords you just changed work:
    /opt/ovs-agent-3.0/utils/do_rpc.py https://admin:<new passwd>@<your OVM server>:8899 echo ""
    /opt/ovs-agent-3.0/utils/do_rpc.py https://oracle:<new passwd>@<your OVM server>:8899 echo ""
The above commands will return the following if the passwords are correct (anything else, no matter what error it returns means the password is not what you expect it to be):
    echo [''] =>
    success:echo=
    Hope this answer helps...

  • OVM Server in failed status after a power outage

    Hi,
We recently experienced a power outage and the OVM environment completly reboot.
The OVM manager come back as well as the ovm server.
The issue is i can't anymore control the OVM servers from the manager as the both servers are in a failed status with the following message:
Job failed commit (internal) due to If the IP address of this server has changed, please delete the server: oracle55, and re-discover.
    Tue Nov 06 16:32:38 CET 2012
com.oracle.ovm.mgr.api.exception.IllegalOperationException: If the IP address of this server has changed, please delete the server: oracle55, and re-discover.
Interesting enough, I can manually restart the VMs (xm create...). Thus I'm not really in favor of deleting and rediscovering the servers.
Obviously the ip configuration didn't change (no DNS).
Any idea how to fix this?
    Thanks for your help.
    Yann

    Hello!!
Maybe it could be ovs-agent service from the server not communicating correctly with VM Manager??
You should login to server and see what command "service ovs-agent status" returns!!
If everything is running maybe a "service ovs-agent restart" could resolve something...
Also check that there aren't locked processes...under "/var/run/ovs-agent/" check that there is NOT any ".lock" file.
    Greets!! ;)

  • OVM Server in a VLAN has network timeouts

    Hi community.
I have the next issue in OVM Server configured in a VLAN.
When the the users accessing the VMs out of the LAN, the communications presents timeout and the session not work well.
If a ping is sent since WAN, there timeouts by 5 seconds and then the communication is reestablished.
If the same test is running in the LAN., not there any problem.
If the ping is sended since VM to WAN, not there any problem.
Is probably a Network communications problem??? or is probably problem in the OVM Manager or OVM Server configuration
The OVM Manager version is 3.1.1
The OVM Server version is 3.1.1.
    Thank you for any suggestions.

  • OVM server : Change IP of server and manager

    Hi,
does anyone know where I can find a metalink note to change the IP addresses of OVM server and manager ?
    Thanks in advance

    user11969500 wrote:
does anyone know where I can find a metalink note to change the IP addresses of OVM server and manager ?Changing the IP address of an Oracle VM Server is pretty simple: remove it from Oracle VM Manager, change the IP address and then add it back.
Changing the IP address of the Oracle VM Manager is even easier: just change it's IP address. :) All communication between VM Manager and the pool is initialized by the Manager itself. The pool doesn't know (or care) what that IP address of the Manager is. Remember to change the /etc/hosts file though, otherwise you may have issues with Oracle XE and oc4j not starting correctly.

  • /proc/cpuinfo | grep vmx  -- output changing between OVM Server 2.1 and 2.2

Have not seen this issue before.
I have a Dell 2950 with 2 Intel Xeon Quad-Core CPUs , with Virtualization enabled in the BIOS.
When I install OVM Server 2.1.5, my cpus support virtualization (based on "cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep vmx" returning data)
When I upgrade to OVM Server 2.2, my cpus no longer support virtualization ( based on "cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep vmx" returning NO data)
If I do a clean install of OVM Server 2.2, my cpus do not support virtualization ( based on "cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep vmx" returning NO data)
I have to be missing something simple.

    Thanks Herb.
    # xm dmesg | grep -i vm

That is what I was looking for. They need to update Metalink Doc 468463.1.

  • Lost connection between ovm-manager and ovm-server (ovm 3.1)

    Hi,
I have a manager as a VM on my laptop and a physical server as an ovm-server. Everything is fine when i boot the server but after some time, the manager stop to show the information from the server. in the ovs-agent log file the following messages are repeated regulary
[2013-08-29 13:06:19 6160] DEBUG (notification:289) Trying to connect to manager.
    [2013-08-29 13:06:20 6160] DEBUG (notification:291) Connected to manager.

    [2013-08-29 13:06:34 6171] ERROR (notification:64) Unable to send notification: (111, 'Connection refused')
I did not reboot neither the server nor the manager. No IP change. Rebooting the manager has no effect.
The only way to restore communication is to restart the ovs-agent on the server, but this restart disable the network card. I must be physical on the server to restart the network.
any help will be very helpful
    best regards
    Jean-Marc

    Hi,
The are many steps to verify:
Verify with your firewall on the Oracle VM Manager system (service iptables stop).
Verify with a ping between OVM Manager and OVM Server using the IP Address and using the hostname for each one (from OVM Manager : ping ovm-server ; and from OVM Server: ping ovm-manager).
I hope this can help you
    Best Regards

  • How to configure local disk on OVM Server as storage space to create VMs

    Hello,
We have installed OVM Server 3.1.1 on a machine that has 250 GB of Hard disk space [Single disk].
While installing used an option - Remove all partitions and create a new default partition layout.
Around 4GB has been used and remaining 246 GB is left as free space.
From OVM Manager - the server is discovered but didn't discovered the physical disk [i.e. remaining 246 GB raw disk space].
Can someone help me to understand how to use local disk as storage space for creating and running VM's.
    Thanks
    Srinivas

You can? You've used every conceivable BIOS out there? You must really be full of yourself. There is absolutely no BIOS that I know of that gives this basic function. BIOSs do not "hard partition" anything. A "BIOS" is not made for such things. Do you even know what "BIOS" stands for?
I wonder why there is some many wanting to do this and are having problems.... I mean if it is such a straight forward thing to do..... It must be down right "intuitive".
You maybe speaking of a RAID "BIOS" but you obviously think you're not. Some motherboards have integrated RAID abilities. Intel RST comes to mind... BUT this isn't a feature of a MOTHERBOARD BIOS.
I've got some $50,000 servers that will not break a single hard drive up into multiple logical drives..... Now, I haven't worked on a "Stinkpad" for many years. Don't want to. However, I have never seen one that would do what you're saying you're doing.
You maybe trying to help.... but you're leading people down a wrong path.
Its just as easy to run virtual box and use the virtual box templates for Oracle VM. In fact, its more practical if you want to run Oracle VM on a laptop for testing purposes than blowing everything away and attempting to setup different LUNS on a single hard drive.
    For your review...

Although it's more reliable to use a separate location (such as an NFS share) for a storage repository, you can use a local disk of your Oracle VM Server instead, thus taking advantage of the local storage option. Beware, though: Oracle VM Server 3.0 doesn't allow you to utilize the unused space on the physical disk it's installed on. For local storage, you'll need at least one more physical disk. In other words, you'll need a total of two disks at minimum on your Oracle VM Server host if you want to use local storage. In practice, though, local storage is not a primary use case. The major downside to this approach is that local storage, by definition, cannot be shared between different servers.

  • Acrobat Connect Pro LMS 7.5 server cache issue - displaying old content

Our Adobe Acrobat Connect Pro server is showing old Captivate-created content from about 4-6 weeks ago.
I loaded 35+ sets of Captivate 3 (SCORM 1.2, HTML, zipped) content onto our Acrobat Connect Pro LMS about 6 weeks ago.
I converted all training content from Captivate 3.0.1 to 4.0.1, 4 weeks ago by opening each file in Captivate 4 and following prompts to "Save As" new files with different file names.
I reloaded all content 4 weeks ago, and again 2 weeks ago.
I reloaded about half of all content again last week.
End User Acceptance testing performed this week showed that most of the courses are showing old content, ranging from 2-6 weeks old
    Attempted fixes and workarounds:
Deleting content entirely and reloaded from scratch - this will not work long term, as we lose usage data each time we reload completely new files.
Contacted Adobe, provided times to track incidents of the issue.  We reached Tier 2 - who told us it was our problem and that everything appeared to be working fine from their side.
New workaround - load new content and reattach course to new content.  This presents the same long term issue as the first workaround, but enables us to retain older versions of content in the system, should we need to revert or report on it.
Gaining server side access is a bit challenging due to the hosting situation we have, so I am looking (ideally) for a solution that can be performed from the Administrator/Author Frontend.  However, I want to learn the real cause of the problem, wherever it might reside, so that it can be properly corrected and avoided in the future.  I am calling this a server cache issue, as it seems the server has somewhere retained unwanted old versions of content, preventing current content from being displayed to end users.  Viewing content as an end user = see old content.  Viewing content from the Content area (Author view) shows the current files, so I know they are on the server and are loading correctly, up to a point.
I am preparing all content for another round of loading/reloading due to other issues and updates, so republishing and reloading all 35+ files into the LMS is unavoidable at this point.
This issue is keeping our LMS from launching to several thousand users across the country, so any suggestions or helpful tips are much appreciated.

I think I have isolated the source of this problem. It's the Pitstop Professional 9 plug in. I un-installed this, and everything opens quicker than greased lightning. I re-installed it and it's back to slowsville.
Unfortunately Pitstop is essential to my workflow.
Until recently I did my pre-press on a Mac G5 with Acrobat Pro 7 and Pitstop 6.5. I never had this problem with slow file opening. But it seems that the delays would occur when I used the plug-in with large complex files.. So it would open files as fast as you'd expect from an elderly machine. But starting to use Pitstop would result in a prolonged period of staring at a spinning beachball.
I wonder is there any way to stop the Pitstop plug-in from initializing until it is used? So the plug-in stays inert until you select the tool from from the menus.
