OVM Server in a VLAN has network timeouts

Hi community.
I have the next issue in OVM Server configured in a VLAN.
When the the users accessing the VMs out of the LAN, the communications presents timeout and the session not work well.
If a ping is sent since WAN, there timeouts by 5 seconds and then the communication is reestablished.
If the same test is running in the LAN., not there any problem.
If the ping is sended since VM to WAN, not there any problem.
Is probably a Network communications problem??? or is probably problem in the OVM Manager or OVM Server configuration
The OVM Manager version is 3.1.1
The OVM Server version is 3.1.1.
Thank you for any suggestions.

Hello!!
Maybe it could be ovs-agent service from the server not communicating correctly with VM Manager??
You should login to server and see what command "service ovs-agent status" returns!!
If everything is running maybe a "service ovs-agent restart" could resolve something...
Also check that there aren't locked processes...under "/var/run/ovs-agent/" check that there is NOT any ".lock" file.
Greets!! ;)

  • OVM Server or Virtual BOX

Which product (OVM server or Virtual BOX) has a better perfomance, flexibility and reliability?

    Hi,
well both products actually have a totally different focus:
OVM is a "Server Visualization Product", which means it is a bare metal hypervisor directly installed on hardware, whereas Virtual Box is a "Desktop Visualization Product", which runs on top of an already installed OS.
Main Focus of Virtual Box is for testing and developing, not for production systems. Main Focus for OVM is definitely production environment (but may be used for deploying test and development systems).
It's in the defintiion, that OVM server has a better performance and reliability, because it is not installed on top of another OS. Virtual Box can only be so reliable as the underlying OS.
So if you run it on top of Windows.... decide yourself ;)

  • Network error since moving Essbase server into new VLAN

We just moved a Solaris zone containing an Essbase server into another VLAN and now I am seeing strange problems with network timeouts. When EAS runs "query database" commands in MAXL (when you click on a database, for example), it can hang for ten minutes and then timeout. If I run this locally on the server via essmsh:
    MAXL> query database <Db> get estimated size;
    I get, after ten minutes:
ERROR - 1056213 - message from server [Network error [145]: Unable to connect to [chr7z037:1423]. The client timed out waiting to connect to Analytic Services Agent using TCP/IP. Check your network connections. Also make sure that server and port values are correct].
THe server isn't down and I can connect to it via EAS and HSS.
I am not sure what service is reporting this error - must be APS or HSS (which run on a seperate windows box)?
Also EAS data previews are painfully slow and/or timeout with the same network error as above.
The essbase server is in HSS mode.

    Hi Philip,
As CL said ,even I had faced the similar issue. In our case , it was the concept of DMZ ( they were in 2 different DMZ's ) and not able to communicate and gave the error ( which you mentioned in your post).
Try to open up the ports ( Try to telnet also to check)

  • OVM Server 2.1.2 does not prompt for Networking

OVM Server 2.1.2 does not prompt for a network setup (ie DHCP or static IPs).
    - I tried re-installing this several times
This same machine works with native Enterprise Linux 5.2 x86-64 networking.
The motherboard has two onboard Realtek 8111C chips (10/100/1000 Mbit)
    http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Overview.aspx?ProductID=2842
Will setting up networking by hand work with OVM Server 2.1.2?

OK I finaly made my Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller to work.
First install an Ethernet card in your box that OVM supports. This to make the OVM installation run smoothly.
When OVM is up and running follow the steps in [Mini-HOWTO] RPMs needed to compile a kernel-module on / for VM Server to get a working environment to compile modules.
Now get the driver for the unsupported card from ftp://61.56.86.122/cn/nic/r8168-8.008.00.tar.bz2 .
    Unpack the file by running;:
    tar -jxvf r8168-8.008.00.tar.bz2
Now follow the steps in the included readme file to compile and install the driver.
After this I edited the file /etc/modules.conf and changed the line
    alias eth0 xxx
    to
    alias eth0 r8168
I then turned of the machine and removed my temporary network card.
When booted I ran system-config-network to configure the network once more to the original values I entered when I installed.

  • Can create vlan group on eth0 after OVM Server installation?

    Hi,
I have installed OVM server to use eth0 without vlan segment for ovm manager to manage OVM server.
Now if I want to use eth0 for virtual machine management purpose as well, can I edit this network, create vlan group on eth0,
one for server managent + cluster heartbeat + live migration
    one for virtual machine management?
Or I have to reinstall OVM server with vlan segment on eth0?
    Appreciate any comment on this.

it was the wrong mfc42.dll version

  • OVM Server 2.2.1 in a ProLiant BL680c G7 did not detect networks interfaces

    Hello everybody
I just installed OVM Server in a HP ProLiant BL680c G7 and the installation finish. But the network interfaces was not detected. (The installation skip the network steps)
The Server have 24 network interfaces (FlexFabric Embedded Ethernet)
Any idea in order to recognize network interfaces??
    greetings

    Hi,
try using OVM 2.2.2 which was released a week ago. (edelivery.oracle.com/linux)
A lot of drivers were updated, maybe now your network cards are also detected.

  • OVM 3.2.6 Delete Management Network

    Hi there,
I was wondering if there is a way to delete unnecessary management networks. I created an extra vlan and set it as mgmt net for testing purposes. Now I would like to remove it but OVM manger doesn't let me. And it also wouldn't let me change IP addresses inside the management network.
Is there a known workaround for this?
    Thanks,
    Lotsie

This doesn't address your real issue, but just let me comment on the poor exception handling you mention in your previous post because I agree with you and complained about in my first reply:
The one thing I wouldn't understand is this: if it is intended to have only one management network and not modify it after the initial setup, then why does the GUI let me mark other networks as Mgmt? Also, if I can add several Mgmt networks, then why is it not allowed to delete the unnecessary ones afterwards?
Apparently, my complaint is no longer valid as it appears the developers fixed this issue way back in 3.1.1.  I was in the process of setting up a similar scenario as yours in one of my labs (a 3.1.1-625 lab) and found that I was not able to create a new network I named "Test server mgmt" using the server management channel - the network wizard stopped me with the following error:
"OVMRU_0010134E: Cannot add vlan segment [network.VlanSegment (922) in Bond2 VLANs] to network [Test server mgmt] because server [myserver4] has management network [Dom0 bond0 SM].
I also encountered the same exception handling in one of my 3.2.6 labs - Oracle VM Manager does not allow people to create a second network using the server mgmt channel if one already exists.
Anyway, this doesn't help with your problem, but it does show that I learn something new every day - I can't complain about that as something we need to improve on any more :-)
Let me do a little more digging to see if I can find you an easy solution...

  • Lost connection between ovm-manager and ovm-server (ovm 3.1)

    Hi,
I have a manager as a VM on my laptop and a physical server as an ovm-server. Everything is fine when i boot the server but after some time, the manager stop to show the information from the server. in the ovs-agent log file the following messages are repeated regulary
[2013-08-29 13:06:19 6160] DEBUG (notification:289) Trying to connect to manager.
    [2013-08-29 13:06:20 6160] DEBUG (notification:291) Connected to manager.

I did not reboot neither the server nor the manager. No IP change. Rebooting the manager has no effect.
The only way to restore communication is to restart the ovs-agent on the server, but this restart disable the network card. I must be physical on the server to restart the network.
any help will be very helpful
    best regards
    Jean-Marc

    Hi,
The are many steps to verify:
Verify with your firewall on the Oracle VM Manager system (service iptables stop).
Verify with a ping between OVM Manager and OVM Server using the IP Address and using the hostname for each one (from OVM Manager : ping ovm-server ; and from OVM Server: ping ovm-manager).
I hope this can help you
    Best Regards

  • OVM Server 3.1.1 errors

I am running OVM 3.1.1 in a 2 servers cluster. on one of the server I noticed that following errors happening very frequently in /var/log/ovs-agent.log. whereas 2nd OVM Server has no errors. I also noticed in OVM manager that if I go to "repository" tab, every thing in repository has "lock" sign on it.
I am trying to create a clone from one of the templates but it just stays in "in progress" at 0% for ages and nothing happens.
I do not have any idea where and why these errors are generated. Any help would be much appreciated.

Did you get any resolution to this problem?
I'm getting the same errors and I can't find anything on MOS which indicates what could it be. Same setup as yours, 2 servers in the cluster pool and one is throwing errors and the other is not.

  • Network Timeout freezes InDesign

A Win7 SP1 64bit PC is running InDesign CS5, and while working on a file, a user experienced a "network connection" error, and then InDesign froze, with no chance of recovery.
Is there any way to prevent ID from freezing when a network timeout issue occurs?
Why does it need to freeze anyway?  Why can't it simply halt whatever task it was trying to perform?

I think there is no question, scientifically or unscientifically, that we see far more reports of file corruption with networks than without.
Networks are complicated beasts, and they have many more possibly failure points than local disks do. (On the other hand, people with network storage are much more likely to have reliably backups; at least that's been true historically before the advent of both popular Internet-based backup and Apple's Time Machine). It's also the case that medium to large sites work almost exclusively with networks (though they may use database-driven document storage for which the traditional InDesign network-averse guidance may not apply), and they tend to deal with more documents than individuals do.
I think the single most definitive point in your favor of your position is this text from the CS5 help, Recommended workflow for InDesign documents:
    You
can improve performance and prevent many problems by establishing
a good workflow to use with Adobe InDesign.
    Open documents locally
    Before you open
a document stored on a network volume or on removable media, copy
the document and any linked graphics to your local hard disk. The slower
access time and data transfer rate of a network volume or removable media
can cause data to become lost or corrupted, possibly damaging the document.
However, be aware of overriding someone else’s work if you copy
the local files back to a network server.
But that doesn't say networks are unsupported, it just says they may not be good.
But the person who wrote this was hopelessly naïve — network are a critical part of any modern business computer setup that is larger in scope than a sole proprietorship. And anyworkflow that expects users to copy files off the network to local disk and back is patently ludicrous. As the above acknowledges, copying them back is frought with peril.
Furthermore, the operating system vendors have expended no small effort to make networks mroe and more seamless and well-integrated, and to try to make them nearly indistiguishable from local disk—except. Except when they don't. Except when they can't. Except when applications need to know more about the underlying substrate of the filesystem, need better timing information, need to do things like memory-map files into RAM with guaranteed perforamance, etc. Though I am a bit skeptical that InDesign has any such needs...
Probably a good summary comes from a John Nack (Photoshop evangelist) blog post from 2008 (and networks have only become more popular), where he quotes an unnamed Adobe engineer, http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2008/06/filesaving_issu.html:
Directly writing to a network filing system adds a level of complexity,
which includes timing issues, network noise, performance, and other
potential issues. We’ve occasionally run into bugs with different
configurations/combinations, but as there are too many variants for us
to reliably test and certify all the clients, servers, hardware and
software, we recommend the safer course of working with files locally
and then copying them up to a file server when you’re done. While
directly reading/writing to network file systems should work in theory,
and while we do some limited testing in the most popular configurations
to verify that it does, we can not certify that it will work reliably in
    your configuration.
But, of course, what do we mean by "support"? I am, by the way, interpretting your statement "not designed for working over networks," as "networks are not supported," and that may not be fair of me.
To me, "supported" means there is a reasonable expectation of the software working in the scenario, that Adobe will address bugs raised to them over the issue (rather than closing bugs saying, "at your own risk, sorry, bub!"), and Adobe will make a reasonable effort to keep it working. I think the situation with networks does qualify.
Unfortunately, it's hard to find anyone to say so. In part, I think, because there are so many variables nobody wants to be pinned down saying "it'll work" because you'll always eventually be able to point to a case where it won't. And the above blog post (part I didn't quote) talks about how a problem is really due to a bad interaction with Adobe product and MacOS X 10.5.3, which was later fixed by Apple.
Anyhow, we can also find plenty of evidence of Adobe having accepted and fixed bugs that relate to network behavior in InDesign. So I'm pretty confident that network use of InDesign si well-supported. But I certainly wouldn't say it was rock solid.
Hmm, this is kind of long. I will address the OP's issues in a seperate post.

  • Westell 327W Network Timeout

I'm having problems setting up Apache and SSH with my Westell 327W.
I have Verizon DSL -> Westell 327W Modem/Router -> Ubuntu Server with Apache Web Server and SSH Server.
The Ubuntu Server with apache and SSH is the DMZ Host.
Apache and SSH will work good for 5-10 minutes, then when you click on a link or do anything from the apache webpage... Firefox says Connecting to XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX, then it will say Page Load Error. Network Timeout. The server at xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is taking too long to respond.
I putty (ssh) into the Ubuntu server, everything will work good for 5-10 minutes, then putty will freeze up and say Putty Fatal Error. Network error: Software caused connection abort.
Apache or SSH will NOT work for 1-2 minutes. Firefox will say Network Timeout and SSH will not connect at all.
Then, everything will work again for 5-10 more minutes... then go down for 1-2 minutes, over and over and over....
Where can I find help for the Westell 327W Custom Firewall Rules? I dont have a help section on my 327W and cant find any information about making my own custom firewall rules.
I've read my problem occurs because of my firewall rules. The router drops the session because it drops it out of the state table or something like that?!?!?!? But I thought setting a PC as the DMZ host would put it outside of the firewall and the firewall rules wouldnt apply to the DMZ host?!?!?!?
    PLEASE HELP! Thanks!

    Ok, I thought so.
#1 In you are using GNOME, go to System >> Admininstration >> Networking.
#2 In the general tab make sure your network card is active.
#3 Select your network adapter and press properties.
#4 Make sure your network card is enabled.
#5 Change the configuration from DHCP to static (OR if it is already set to static)...
#6 For the IP Addres, you can set any number that you want to but not: 0, 1, 15 to 47 OR 255.
    Such as 192.168.1.6
#7 Enter in the Subnet Mask of: 255.255.255.0
#8 Enter in the default gateway of: 192.168.1.1
#9 In the DNS Tab, enter in the DNS Servers that you want to use.
    b) If you desire to, you may enter in the DNS of 192.168.1.1
    c) OR the DNS Server address(es) that are in one of your router's screens. Maybe at Advanced -> DNS ?
#10 In your router, forward to the IP Address that you have setup on your computer.
This should resolve the issue. If not, in your router go to Advanced... In Advanced, if you see anything about UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) go there.
If UPnP is turned in the router, I would recommend turning that feature off.
If in Advanced you do not see anything about UPnP, please show a screen shot of the Advanced Screen...
I state my source(s) about setting a Static IP.

    End of Job
    ----------

This is usually due to either of the following issues (not enough information to determine if this is your problem):
    1. The IP addresses you are using as the IPs for the Oracle VM servers being discovered are somehow incorrect. For instance, I sometimes typo one of the octets in the IP address IE: I meant to type 10.11.12.100, but instead messed up the third octet by typing a "21" instead of a "12" (just an example).
    2. The password you provided for the "Oracle VM Agent Password" in the discovery dialog is incorrect. There are several reasons this may be happening, but the way to ensure the ovs-agent has the same password you think it should is by logging into each Oracle VM server and changing the ovs-agent password for BOTH "admin" AND "oracle" users. This is done using the following command on each Oracle VM server:
    /usr/sbin/ovs-agent-passwd admin
    /usr/sbin/ovs-agent-passwd oracle
Both of the above will prompt for a password - use the same password for both and ensure you do this on all your Oracle VM servers.
Here is how you verify that the passwords you just changed work:
    /opt/ovs-agent-3.0/utils/do_rpc.py https://admin:<new passwd>@<your OVM server>:8899 echo ""
    /opt/ovs-agent-3.0/utils/do_rpc.py https://oracle:<new passwd>@<your OVM server>:8899 echo ""
The above commands will return the following if the passwords are correct (anything else, no matter what error it returns means the password is not what you expect it to be):
    echo [''] =>
    success:echo=
    Hope this answer helps...

  • Multiple users logged into one server, each users printer has a different name, application needs ONE name to print to.

Multiple users logged into one server, each users printer has a different name, application needs ONE name to print to.
I'm NOT in any way a Terminal Services expert and I need help trying to get an application program working in a multi-user environment.
The issue is that the printer changes for every user that is logged in. The application needs to print NOT to the default printer, but to a "special" printer which is selected in the application... let's call it a label printer to simplify the explanation.
You have your default regular printer, easy for the application to find that one, and then you have a special printer that labels get printed onto. The application needs to know what printer is the label printer. So we allow the user to select that in the
application and the selection is stored in a config file in
    C:\ProgramData\mfgr\prog\setting files
I don't have access to the application so I can't change how this works.
In the "regular" world, selecting the label printer driver to use should be per machine, NOT per user. When a new user logs into a machine, the physical printer doesn't go "poof" and a new printer suddenly appear. Same printer for all
    users.
Yet in terminal services, the physical machine is "merged" with the virtual machine on the server. And there can be many users logged in at the same time. So each users real machine (and real printer) is injected into the "fake" terminal
services machine. The name of the printers is made unique for each user. So the printers DO go "poof" and change names depending on the user logged into terminal services.
So user "A" logs in and sets up the application to print to "LabelPrinterForUserA" (or whatever the name of the printer happens to be), that setting is stored in the ProgramData subfolder, and all is well. Later, user "B" logs
in, and when they print, the application tries to print to "LabelPrinterForUserA" which doesn't exist for user B or is only accessible by user A. If user B re-configures, that breaks it for user A.
SOLUTION 1: The way that /should/ work (in my mind) is that you define one "generic" printer in Terminal Services... call it "Virtual Label printer" and when the user wants to print to it, the print job gets re-directed back to whatever
physical printer is actually connected to their local workstation. There is a map of virtual printer to actual printer depending on the current user. The application is told once to print to "Virtual Label Printer" for all users.
SOLUTION 2: Or... there should be some way to make the ProgramData sub folders separate per user. E.g. when user "A" tries to access:
    C:\ProgramData\mfgr\prog\setting files
    they actually get
    C:\UserData\UserA\AppData\mfgr\prog\setting files
    and user "B" gets
    C:\UserData\UserB\AppData\mfgr\prog\setting files
So the question I have is: Does either of those solutions exist hidden somewhere in the setup of terminal server? Or is there another way around this issue that I don't know?

I don't really have a "for sure" answer to this, but because people here can't seem to deal with a question that hasn't been answered I'll provide the best answer I did receive from ServerFault.com user Nathan:
I can feel your pain with using old software on terminal servers ...the solution I've come up with definitely won't scale as it requires some manual configuration, but I've gotten this method to work with our label printers (which require to be
printed to an LPT port...yep, that old).
Share your USB-connected printers to the network on each machine. Then, have the user log in on aunique session for each of them
(a TS account cannot be shared among computers for this to work) and install a network printer pointing to the USB one they shared. Try to use a DNS name to account for possible DHCP movements.
After, it should work. Each user can do this since display names can be identical as long as the ports are different (which they are).
This was clarified by the following series of comments:
I think you are on to something here, and I originally advised the admin to do this. The problem he ran into is that it setup the printer names in the TS as "printer on usersworkstation"
and he could not rename it except to change the "printer" to whatever. E.g. the "on userworkstation" remained. I believe there is another way of installing the printer which avoids this, but I can't find it. Ages ago, one used to do NET

@JamesNewton That's actually the exact method we used. The way around the "network printer" part is to install it as local printer and map it to a TCP/IP port that way. –  Nathan

You mean in the case where the printers are TCP/IP connected and not local USB / LPT to the users workstation? That makes sense. Wonder if this will work for USB connected printers... –  James

@JamesNewton You'd share the local printer on the client's PC then on the server connect via TCP/IP to it. You'd need static addresses or use DNS names if DHCP, though. –  Nathan

  • How to configure local disk on OVM Server as storage space to create VMs

    Hello,
We have installed OVM Server 3.1.1 on a machine that has 250 GB of Hard disk space [Single disk].
While installing used an option - Remove all partitions and create a new default partition layout.
Around 4GB has been used and remaining 246 GB is left as free space.
From OVM Manager - the server is discovered but didn't discovered the physical disk [i.e. remaining 246 GB raw disk space].
Can someone help me to understand how to use local disk as storage space for creating and running VM's.
    Thanks
    Srinivas

You can? You've used every conceivable BIOS out there? You must really be full of yourself. There is absolutely no BIOS that I know of that gives this basic function. BIOSs do not "hard partition" anything. A "BIOS" is not made for such things. Do you even know what "BIOS" stands for?
I wonder why there is some many wanting to do this and are having problems.... I mean if it is such a straight forward thing to do..... It must be down right "intuitive".
You maybe speaking of a RAID "BIOS" but you obviously think you're not. Some motherboards have integrated RAID abilities. Intel RST comes to mind... BUT this isn't a feature of a MOTHERBOARD BIOS.
I've got some $50,000 servers that will not break a single hard drive up into multiple logical drives..... Now, I haven't worked on a "Stinkpad" for many years. Don't want to. However, I have never seen one that would do what you're saying you're doing.
You maybe trying to help.... but you're leading people down a wrong path.
Its just as easy to run virtual box and use the virtual box templates for Oracle VM. In fact, its more practical if you want to run Oracle VM on a laptop for testing purposes than blowing everything away and attempting to setup different LUNS on a single hard drive.
    For your review...
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/articles/servers-storage-admin/configure-vm-templates-1656261.html
Although it's more reliable to use a separate location (such as an NFS share) for a storage repository, you can use a local disk of your Oracle VM Server instead, thus taking advantage of the local storage option. Beware, though: Oracle VM Server 3.0 doesn't allow you to utilize the unused space on the physical disk it's installed on. For local storage, you'll need at least one more physical disk. In other words, you'll need a total of two disks at minimum on your Oracle VM Server host if you want to use local storage. In practice, though, local storage is not a primary use case. The major downside to this approach is that local storage, by definition, cannot be shared between different servers.
