OVM with Falconstor/Ipstor disks

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone worked with OVM in an environment that uses Falconstor/IPStor for their disk management? I am currently trying to figure out how to expand virtual disk assigned to a VM. The admin expanded it on the Falconstor side, but the disk on the VM is not showing the added space. I also can see the added space on the OVM server, but the VM does not. Do I need to reboot the VM to have it see the space? I was hoping to avoid that, if possible.
Any help or links to docs that would help, are appreciated.
Thank you

But when I run tunefs.ocfs2 -S /dev/xvde to increase the size, it doesn't do anything on the VM, and when I am on the VM Server, I see the disk which is named /dev/sdn. Do I have to reboot the VM to see the size increase? Inside of the vm.cfg for the VM the disk is presented by: 'phy:/dev/sdn,xvde,w!' under the disk= portion of the vm.cfgOk, so the disk is visible to the Oracle VM Server, which means your DBA should have presented it via the UI. However, this may not have been possible if the disks don't get discovered by ovs-agent. So, you probably will have to reboot the VMs to see the size increase because you're using disk systems that we've never tested. As this is a 3rd party disk system, I doubt very much if the disk space increase gets passed directly into the guest(s).
Edited because I assumed you were running Oracle VM 3.0, not 2.2, but your other thread suggests otherwise: You will have to reboot the VMs to see the increase in storage for your guests in 2.2.
Edited by: Avi Miller on Feb 15, 2012 9:07 AMThank you for you help on this. Is the upgrade from 2.2 to 3 very difficult, besides the vm down time? Or are you able to run both vm 2.2 and vm3 on the same host server? I will also research this, so if you have any docs you would suggest, the advice would be appreciated.
Thanks again.

  • How to reset my macbook back to factory settings with no install disk

So I purchased a 2009 White 2.26GHZ macbook on ebay.  It came with just the macbook and charger, no disc.  And when I opened it to start it up, it was the "new user" screen asking for my Apple ID, create admin ID, wifi network setup, and such.  When I logged on it was the new Mountain Lion OS.  (The previous had stated that he had upgraded)  My question is, since I bought this used, I would like to wipe the hard drive before I really start using it because who knows what the person before me has done to it, (keylogger, tracker, etc) but how can I bring back Mountain Lion if I don't have any installation disc?  And what about the fact that this computer probably originally came with Leppord since it was from 2009? If I restart will I have Leppord or Mountain Lion?  Also, how the heck did the seller get to that "new user" setup screen for me when I turned it on??? The fact that I was like this leads me to believe that I must be able to do this... Wipe my 2009 macbook hard drive, and turn it on to a brand new Mountain Lion OS.  I am brand new to macs, and am looking forward to using this but I just want to make sure that I'm starting fresh!

Legally the Mountain Lion installation is actually tied to the person who purchased it and put it on the MacBook. He/she should have removed it before sale as well as provided you with the original disks.
Your best bet now, if you cannot get the original disk from your seller, is to contact Apple using www.apple.com/support/contact if you are in a country that supports it or call the appropriate phone number on this page, they can send your the original disks that came with the computer for a minimal fee.
If you want to bring the computer's OS up to Mountain Lion, you can then purchase Snow Leopard from Apple online and install it, then go to the Mac app store and get Mountain Lion there.
    Best of luck.

  • App-V 5.0 SP2 RDS Client with hotfix 2 breaks frequently on Windows 2012R2 with User Profile Disks enabled

    Hi All,
I am at my wit's end trying to troubleshoot this, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
We are having serious stability issues with App-V 5.0 SP2 RDS in our environment with User Profile Disks enabled.
We have applied the latest hotfix but the issues persist.
    The main problems are:
    1. Periodically the client seems to become corrupted and all applications stop working for all users. All applications including the official Microsoft Office 2013 ones - not just our packages.
The symptoms are the same as if I change the App-V Client Service account to run under a user account instead of SYSTEM, so it suggests a file access issue. The log files also hint at this, and one of there errors is similar to this:
The virtual application 'C:\Users\rds.user9\AppData\Local\Microsoft\AppV\Client\Integration\A3EF9C01-C0E9-4AC5-B21F-DB9B1D2F700C\Root\Mindjet\MindManager 14\MindManager.exe' could not be started because the
    App-V Subsystem 'Virtual Filesystem' could not be initialized. {error: 0x6740090A-0x20003}
Once this problem occurs the only way I have found to fix it is to either completely remove and reinstall the client, or (perhaps this is the big clue) rename the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\AppV\MAV\Configuration\Volumes , unpublish
an application, then republish said application.
I don't even think it matters which application gets published. The point seems to be that this 'Volumes' key gets rewritten.
I am highly suspicious that our issues are caused by User Profile disks in our RDS environment, as when I disable them on our staging collection all of these issues seem to disappear.
I have made sure all of the servers have permissions on the share (folder and share permissions). It doesn't seem to make a difference.
    2.  Some application fail completely with User Profile Disks enabled. If we switch the setting from "Store all settings and data on the user profile disk" to "Store Only the following folders" there seems to be some improvement,
in that at least one application that fails on the other setting starts to work.
    3. We have already set that NTFS 8 dot 3 reg fix some time ago.
    SOS!
We have gone live this week (not my call) and this is having disasterous consequences. :(
    Thanks in advance,
    John

    Hi,
    Thanks for your response.
I did try this a while ago without success, although it may be worth revisiting with SP2 applied.
I have left this client now.
I left them a Powershell script that deletes HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\AppV\MAV\Configuration\Volumes
and triggers an Unpublish/Publish of an application we have deployed to all of the servers.
This seems to work, but a fix would be better than a workaround.
Not really my problem now though - I did my best.
    Thanks,
    John

  • Cryptsetup: Swap encryption with supend-to-disk doesn't work

    Hello Community,
i'm trying to get swap encryption with suspend-to-disk support to a working state.
On my system only the /home partition is encrypted with cryptsetup-LUKS.
I'm using the howto on "Using a swap file" (with /home/swapfile as swap file) in the wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dm … sk_support
I followed exactly the given instructions:
    From /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
HOOKS="base udev autodetect encrypt block resume filesystems keymap fsck"
    From /etc/default/grub
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="pcie_aspm=force pcie_aspm.policy=powersave pcie_port=native ipv6.disable=1 init=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd resume=/dev/mapper/crypthome resume_offset=16721572"
    From /etc/fstab:
    /home/swapfile none swap defaults 0 0
The swapfile is working. Suspend-to-disk also works. But when resuming, I always get:
ERROR: failed to open encryption mapping
The device UUID=... is not a LUKS volume and the crypto= parameter was not specified
    running hook [resume]
    Waiting 10 seconds for /dev/mapper/crypthome
ERROR: resume: hibernation device /dev/mapper/crypthome not found
Then the system recovers the filesystem of / and later after the passphrase input of /dev/mapper/home it is forced to recover the filesystem of /home.
Shouldn't I get a passphrase input when running the [resume] hook?
Where is the problem I have missed?
    Thanks in advance!

No. Have you read my posting completely?
I don't use a swap partition.  I'm using a Swapfile on my encrypted home partition. See the link in the first posting and go to "Using a swap file".

WD is having issues with mavericks as you can see on the WD forum, did you install any WD software (never do that) when you connected the drive for the first time?
possible issue is a dead SATA bridge card or the new WD firmware w/ Mavericks.

I booted with start up disk , ran disk repair and all is ok. Tried to re-install OS but when I get to designating drive its blank. When I go to startup disk there is a "?" mark. When I restart under startup disk search for a drive it still comes up with nothing.  Before I got the grey spinning wheel I had a locked screen. Could not move curser or click on anything. Finally just shut down. Thank you in advance for any help!

Shouldn't still have a 'beachballing'... if the drive is being found and the system is trying to boot from it but is having problems, I would suggest looking over ds store's user tip - Step by step to fix your Mac.
It's likely either something corrupt in your system files or a failing hard drive. But follow ds's steps until you find the cause of the problem.

  • My G5 won't boot up. The Gray screen comes on and it thinks about it until the fan revs up like it is about to explode. A friend said to start it up with the OS disk and then go to utilities. Didin't work. Any suggestions? Isn't there a key stroke to help

Oh, so this is where I ask my question. Sorry, first time here. As I was saying in my long intro, the gray screen come up and the thing is spinning at the bottom, but nothing happens. Then the fan starts reving up like it is about to explode and I have to manually shut it off. A friend told me to start it up with the OS disk and then go to utilities. I couldn't find the thing, so I went out and bought another. Needless to say, it didn't work. Is there a key stroke to help jump start the machine? How can I get into this thing? I would prefer not to take it in because there are a lot of things on there I don't want just anyone to have access to.Thanks, in advance, for your help!

Your drive does need to be repaired, and best things to buy are another backup recovery drive, with a small OS X partition; a copy of Disk Warrior is expensive @ $90 but excellent and best.
Never bother with or use the drive or reinstall while there are errors. Don't take a "clean' bill from Apple Disk Utility to mean there are no errors. Only that it didn't find what it looked for.

Make sure to have multiple backup sets and of your system so if there is a serious problem, you can just erase and restore to be back runninig.
Sounds like your G5 though needs PMU reset, not PRAM, and the best way for those is to clear nvram instead. might even want to check for dust; tell what System Profile says (later) as to "PowerMacX,Y" or "MacProX,1"

The Utility menu is on the menu bar of an "OS X Install DVD" and at the point where you get to but stop at "install....' for OS X. you probably do need to install OS X on another drive to work from.
Oh, a real severe issue and damage to the drive directory or filesystem CAN in cases prevent booting from DVD (the system still tries to find and see what boot volumes are present) and can help to pull or disconnect the drive. Putting a drive in a FW case to turn on after startup is very useful.

  • Time machine fails backing up with a "backup disk not found" error after upgrade to Lion 10.7.2

Time machine fails backing up with a "backup disk not found" error after upgrade to Lion 10.7.2. I've erased and reformatted the drive; reconnected Time Machine(it saw it) and began a new backup. The backup starts again but fails before completing with backup drive not found error. I used the 10.7.2 combo update. Any help on how to fix this problem would be appreciated.

    Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!
After waiting since October for a fix, I have now upgraded the firmware on the Time Capsule and installed the new Airport Utility, released yesterday, and the situation is even worse.
Up until now, the Airport Utility had an option to disconnect all drives manually and the Time Capsule would then work until the next reboot – a temporary (?) work-around.
Now that option does not exist in the new-look Airport Utility. And the Airport Utility installation can’t be rolled back and the old utility won’t restore.
The sparesbundle is still not accessible. Anyone worked out a work-around in the new environment yet?
I have another Time Machine backup working fine to a trusty old Lacie Drive so erased the one on my Time Capsule to see if that works. I have renamed the Capsule and the Time Capsule Drive.  But to build another full backup will take at least two days and I shall be away from tomorrow and am reluctant to leave the Capsule and computer up and running for a week. And I’ll bet the sparsbundle will still be nowhere to be found.
How can Apple screw up so badly when they are to become the richest company in the entire world and – soon – will have more cash in the bank than the entire United States? Can’t they afford someone who really can sort this out? Especially when a Firewire connected hard drive – my trusty and simple LaCie – works fine.
    Words, almost, fail me.

  • Airport Extreme with Airport USB Disk issues - Dont give up just yet...

Just a heads up for anyone who is having issues with accessing an Airport disk with the latest firmware.
After calling Apple support as i was convinced my AEBS was faulty, i have since discovered that if and HFS+ disk cannot be varified and repaired successfully in Disk Utility, it would lock up my AEBS totally. My wireless would drop out and nothing would work any longer untill I turned the power off and on again.
I was able to correct the issue with the USB HDD by booting with the Leopard CD and using Disk Utility in Mac OS X setup. Trying the same thing when booting from the Macbook HDD would result in a 'failed to unmount' error.
Before anyone has a fit and trys to return their AEBS with a similar issue i suggest trying the above or another USB HDD. It just might save you the $49 that i paid as a result of being out of the 90 days of support on my AEBS and Macbook.
FYI, contrary to the technical requirements i was sent by the Apple service agent i spoke with, my Airport Disk IS working with 2 partitions. 1 HFS+ and the other a Windows partiton (i cant remember if its FAT32 or NTFS. My HDD is at home)
I have a collegue at work who was having similar issues with a FAT32 USB HDD on his AEBS but we have just discovered that the HFS+ HDD that i used to test my AEBS with, worked fine on his also. We are yet to find out if his HDD is faulty at this stage. Ill keep you all posted on what we find.
SO, at this stage it would be resonable to say that the AEBS doesnt handle corrupted HDD's very well. (IE it totally locks up and the wireless drops out)

That used to be a problem on 7.2.x. Now 7.3.1 can fix some minor disk problems (such as disk not unmounted correctly).
Since I upgraded to 7.3.1, I haven't once taken my USB hard drive out to be repaired on my Mac.

Since you seem to be using a new disk for Lion, Time Machine will consider previous backups to be for a "different" computer.  Try doing a control-click or click-and-hold on the Time Machine icon in the Dock, then choose "Browse Other Time Machine Disks".  This should allow Time Machine to see the previous backups.
In the worst case you should be able to open those Time Machine backups and copy your documents from there to your home folder.

09 I Mac goes asleep ends up with a spinning disk on the screen and the mac will not respond has to be rebooted

    First this:
In EnergySaver deselect "put the hard disk to sleep when possible". You must logout after the setting to make this effective.
This probably will not solve it, but let it be deselected.
When the issue is still there:
    Open Terminal;
copy/paste following command (after every command hit "enter" key)
    pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
    when the answer is not 3 write it down;
    then copy/paste following command
    sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
    reboot
    Open Terminal;
    copy/paste following command
    sudo rm /var/vm/sleepimage
after that type EXIT in Terminal and close Terminal.
    This does following for you:
it will set the hibernatemode to zero: the sleepimage (a copy of the complete ram) will not be written and the space on the HD is freed up.
This sleepimage does not do anything for you but taking time at sleep/hibernate and startup. It is an old remnant of earlier days.

i deleted photobooth by accident and i have tried to get it back with the setup disk, i got imovie and garageband back but not photobooth. Any ideas?

PhotoBooth is not on the iLife disk which has iMovie and Garage Band.  PhotoBooth is integrated into OSX, so it's not going to be easy to get back.  You'll need to get it from the recovery disk or partition.  Which OSX are you using so we can point you in the right direction.  NEVER delete any of the OSX programs.
