Owb client+performance+x-windows

Hi,
We are using 11.2.0.1 and finding the performance of OWB slow e.g opening mappings, control center etc.
Machine has enough memory (2.5 GB and checked memory being used in task manager for owb.exe (about 400 M), total being used on PC at any time for all applications aboout 1.5gb and ruled out network latency as tested other cleint/server applications to access the same machine and dataabse and these are fine performance-wise.
The server is located in the same building as the cleint and is a UNIX server.
We are using the cumulative patch recommended by Oracle for performance reasons - still same problem.
Anybody any other tips to get design center/control center to open quickly etc?
Used previous suggestions such as Tools/Optimise repository etc and purging of audit tables.
Another question
Is it possible to run owb client (i.e. open/amend/deploy/run mapppings etc with the windows interface directly on the UNIX server (~e.g using x-windows) as opposed to the client WINDOWS pc
Many Thank

Hi
There are patches with performance related fixes in this area, if you can upgrade to 11.2.0.2 that is advised otherwise there is a mega patch for 11.2.0.1;
BEST --> OWB 11.2.0.2 + megapatch v3 (12874883)
ALTERNATE --> OWB 11.2.0.1 + patch for bug 10270220: Mega Patch v2 (supersedes patch 9802120)

  • OWB Design Client Performance Problems

I am currently testing OWB 9.2.0.4 and i quite often experience what I can only describe as the program hangs. If I wait approximately 30 - 90 seconds, the program will begin to respond again. This is quite annoying and would like to know if there is any config that I can check or change to improve performance of the OWB client.
    My Desktop PC configuration:
    Windows XP Pro
    Dual Pentium Xeon 2.4 GHz
    512 MB RAM
    30GB SCSI Hard Drive
All my repositories are on a single server on my network. Network connections are at 100 MBs.
    Server configuration:
    Windows 2000 Advanced Server
    Dual Xeon 3.00 GHz
    5 GB RAM
300 GB Hard drive space on RAID 1 and RAID 5 arrays.
    Oracle 9i Enterprise (9.2.0.4.0)

    Hi Mark
I too have OWB and a 9i database on my laptop and it works fine. My laptop has 1 Gb RAM and a very fast processor. I have run it on a machine with less memory and it definitely goes slower.
About 9 months ago I paid a lot of money to have Oracle University come to the company that I then worked for to give private OWB training. The instructor who came in told us that 1 Gb should be considered the minimum for machine running OWB in a real-world situation. He said that if we wanted to run OWB against a database on the same machine with a smaller amount of data and maps and not have many other applications open then a lower memory would suffice.
I also definitely agree with you about the latency of the network because I have seen OWB "hang" on even a small map on a congested network. However, I have also seen it hang because of insufficient memory. It happened to me a couple of days ago on my own laptop which as I say has 1 Gb RAM. On the day it happened to me I opened my task manager and it was showing 1.5 Gb memory being consumed by various processes and therefore it was paging to my hard disk.
Now granted OWB was not the only process on my machine because I had an email system, several word documents, an excel spreadsheet, and a couple of browswer windows open. This is what I mean by a real-world situation.
I think I should therefore clarify that its not necessarily OWB that needs 1 Gb RAM but, because it has to share resources with several other typical office tools, it is the machine that needs to have plenty.
    Hope this helps

  • OWB Client throws a DOS window when started

I installed Oracle Warehouse Builder 9i for Windows 2000 Advanced Server, and after installing configured the repository assistant, and a runtime assistant. I did not configure a OWB Browser as it asked for a Oracle Portal. Now when I start OWB Client, it first opens another window which is like a DOS window listing OWB environment variables, and the window comes with a Title "Select Oracle Warehouse Builder Client". Why is the window appearing?, I can simply close it, but what causes it to appear. I have a feeling I missed the Project>Preferences>Utilities. Does anyone concur with me.
    Thanks.
    Steve

Reinstalled it, and it works fine, no DOS window anymore. Dont know why the problem was there in the first place.
    Thanks,
    Steve

  • Installing OWB client in windows

    Hello,
My OWB is running in linux, the version is 11.1.0.7.0. Now every time, i use vncserver to open the owb mapping and it is painful proces. I wanted to install
client on my local machine and i want to access the OWB.
I downloaded the OWB client from oracle website. I just found this link and from the below link, i got into oracle site.
    http://humbletrader.blogspot.com/2006/01/install-owb-client.html
The downloaded zip file name is OWB_10.1.0.4.0.zip
The installation is successful. Then when i connect Oracle warehouse builder screen, it accept my userid/password(Oracle warehouse builder repositary username, password).
then it ask me to select repository name(DESIGNCENTER_VIEW/USER). I selected DESIGNCENTER_VIEW. Then it is asking me to register this repository. I pressed YES. But is hanging for ever... Any one has seen this kind of problem??

    Hi ,
If your OWB server version is 11.1.0.7.0 then you can not connect from any OWB client whose version is not 11.1.0.7.0.
You can download OWB 11.1.0.6 standalone software from
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/warehouse/index.html
On top of it you have to apply 11.1.0.7 patch 6890831
After that you can connect from OWB 11.1.0.7 client to OWB 11.1.0.7 server .
    Thanks,

Is anybody face the same issue?
Do we need to configure something before loading data from a flat file from OWB Client?
    Any help would higly appreciable.
    Regards,
    Manmohan Sharma

    Hi Detlef / Gowtham,
Now I am able to fetch data from flat files from OWB Server as well as OWB Client.
One way I have achieved as suggested by you
    1) Creating location on the OWB Client
    2) Samples the files at client
    3) Created & Configured external table
    4) Copy all flat files on OWB Server
    5) Updated the location which I created at the client.
    Other way
    1) Creating location on the OWB Client
    2) Samples the files at client
    3) Created & Configured external table
    4) Copied flat files on the sever in same drive & directory . like if my all flat files are on C:\data at OWB Client then I copied flat file C:\data on the OWB Server. But this is feasible for Non-Windows.
    Hence my problem solved.
    Thanks a lot.
    Regards,
    Manmohan

    Hi there.
I had install Oracle Warehouse Builder g11 R2 32 Bit version on a Windows Server 2008 R2 64 Bit version.

    Hi Deb
With the code that's out today I don't think the compatibility mode works, from what I can read from users' experencies on LinkedIn discussions.
Customers have used Windows XP mode for Windows 7 (for example), this installs a Windows XP virtual machine in which you can install and run OWB 11gR2 on your Windows 7 (64-bit) workstation. Windows XP mode can be downloaded from:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx
You should also increase your XP mode virtual machine memory (RAM) allocation to at least 1GB for it to perform at an acceptable level. This will get you going until there is a better option.

  • New files and folders on a Linux client mounting a Windows 2012 Server for NFS share do not inherit Owner and Group when SetGID bit set

    Problem statement
When I mount a Windows NFS service file share using UUUA and set the Owner and Group, and set the SetGID bit on the parent folder in a hierarchy. New Files and folders inside and underneath the parent folder do not inherit the Owner and Group permissions
    of the parent.
I am given to understand from this Microsoft KnowledgeBase article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951716/en-gb) the problem is due to the Windows implmentation of NFS Services not supporting the Solaris SystemV or BSD grpid "Semantics"
However the article says the same functionality can acheived by using ACE Inheritance in conjunction with changing the Registry setting for "KeepInheritance" to enable Inheritance propagation of the Permissions by the Windows NFS Services.
    1. The Precise location of the "KeepInheritance" DWORD key appears to have "moved" in  Windows Server 2012 from a Services path to a Software path, is this documented somewhere? And after enabling it, (or creating it in the previous
location) the feature seems non-functional. Is there a method to file a Bug with Microsoft for this Feature?
    2. All of the references on demonstrating how to set an ACE to achieve the same result "currently" either lead to broken links on Microsoft technical websites, or are not explicit they are vague or circumreferential. There are no plain Examples.
    Can an Example be provided?
    3. Is UUUA compatible with the method of setting ACE to acheive this result, or must the Linux client mount be "Mapped" using an Authentication source. And could that be with the new Flat File passwd and group files in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
and is there an Example available.
    Scenario:
    Windows Server 2012 Standard
    File Server (Role)
+- Server for NFS (Role) << -- installed
    General --
    Folder path: F:\Shares\raid-6-array
    Remote path: fs4:/raid-6-array
    Protocol: NFS
    Authentication --
    No server authentication
    +- No server authentication (AUTH_SYS)
    ++- Enable unmapped user access
+++- Allow unmapped user access by UID/GID
    Share Permissions --
    Name: linux_nfs_client.host.edu
    Permissions: Read/Write
    Root Access: Allowed
    Encoding: ANSI
    NTFS Permissions --
    Type: Allow
    Principal: BUILTIN\Administrators
    Access: Full Control
    Applies to: This folder only
    Type: Allow
    Principal: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
    Access: Full Control
    Applies to: This folder only
    -- John Willis, Facebook: John-Willis, Skype: john.willis7416

I'm making some "major" progress on this problem.
    1. Apparently the "semantics" issue to honor SGID or grpid in NFS on the server side or the client side has been debated for some time. It also existed as of 2009 between Solaris nfs server and Linux nfs clients. The Linux community defaulted to declaring
it a "Server" side issue to avoid "Race" conditions between simultaneous access users and the local file system daemons. The client would have to "check" for the SGID and reformulate its CREATE request to specify the Secondary group it would have to "notice"
by which time it could have changed on the server. SUN declined to fix it.. even though there were reports it did not behave the same between nfs3 vs nfs4 daemons.. which might be because nfs4 servers have local ACL or ACE entries to process.. and a new local/nfs
"inheritance" scheme to worry about honoring.. that could place it in conflict with remote access.. and push the responsibility "outwards" to the nfs client.. introducing a race condition, necessitating "locking" semantics.
This article covers that discovery and no resolution - http://thr3ads.net/zfs-discuss/2009/10/569334-CR6894234-improved-sgid-directory-compatibility-with-non-Solaris-NFS-clients
    2. A much Older Microsoft Knowledge Based article had explicit examples of using Windows ACEs and Inheritance to "mitigate" the issue.. basically the nfs client "cannot" update an ACE to make it "Inheritable" [-but-] a Windows side Admin or Windows User
[-can-] update or promote an existing ACE to "Inheritable"
Here are the pertinent statements -
"In Windows Services for UNIX 2.3, you can use the KeepInheritance registry value to set inheritable ACEs and to make sure that these ACEs apply to newly created files and folders on NFS shares."
"Note About the Permissions That Are Set by NFS Clients
The KeepInheritance option only applies ACEs that have inheritance enabled. Any permissions that are set by an NFS client will
only apply to that file or folder, so the resulting ACEs created by an NFS client will
    not have inheritance set."
    "So
If you want a folder's permissions to be inherited to new subfolders and files, you must set its permissions from the Windows NFS server because the permissions that are set by NFS clients only apply to the folder itself."
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;321049
    3. I have set up a Windows 2008r2 NFS server and mounted it with a Redhat Enteprise Linux 5 release 10 x86_64 server [Oct 31, 2013] and so far this does appear to be the case.
    4. In order to mount and then switch user to a non-root user to create subdirectories and files, I had to mount the NFS share (after enabling Anonymous AUTH_SYS mapping) this is not a good thing, but it was because I have been using UUUA - Unmapped Unix
User Access Mapping, which makes no attempt to "map" a Unix UID/GID set by the NFS client to a Windows User account.
To verify the Inheritance of additional ACEs on new subdirectories and files created by a non-root Unix user, on the Windows NFS server I used the right click properties, security tab context menu, then Advanced to list all the ACEs and looked at the far
Column reflecting if it applied to [This folder only, or This folder and Subdirectories, or This folder and subdirectories and files]
    5. All new Subdirectories and files createdby the non-root user had a [Non-Inheritance] ACE created for them.
    6. I turned a [Non-Inheritance] ACE into an [Inheritance] ACE by selecting it then clicking [Edit] and using the Drop down to select [This folder, subdirs and files] then I went back to the NFS client and created more subdirs and files. Then back to the
Windows NFS server and checked the new subdirs and folders and they did Inherit the Windows NFS server ACE! - However the UID/GID of the subdirs and folders remained unchanged, they did not reflect the new "Effective" ownership or group membership.
    7. I "believe" because I was using UUUA and working "behind" the UID/GID presentation layer for the NFS client, it did not update that presentation layer. It might do that "if" I were using a Mapping mechanism and mapped UID/GID to Windows User SIDs and
Group SIDs. Windows 2008r2 no longer has a "simple" Mapping server, it does not accept flat text files and requires a Schema extension to Active Directory just to MAP a windows account to a UID/GID.. a lot of overhead. Windows Server 2012 accepts flat text
files like /etc/passwd and /etc/group to perform this function and is next on my list of things to see if that will update the UID/GID based on the Windows ACE entries. Since the Local ACE take precedence "over" Inherited ACEs there could be a problem. The
Inheritance appears to be intended [only] to retain Administrative rights over user created subdirs and files by adding an additional ACE at the time of creation.
    8. I did verify from the NFS client side in Linux that "Even though" the UID/GID seem to reflect the local non-root user should not have the ability to traverse or create new files, the "phantom" NFS Server ACEs are in place and do permit the function..
reconciling the "view" with "reality" appears problematic, unless the User Mapping will update "effective" rights and ownership in the "view"

  • OWB CLient Application Problem

    Hi All,
We have the installed the OS as Windows 2003 server Enterprise Edition and on which we have installed the ORACLE 9i Database. Even our OWB Design time installation went on successfuly with the creation of Target schema & Run time repository schema. Still the problem we are facing is as soon as we try to start the OWB Client application it gets hung immediatly after showing the first popup of OWB Client server 9.2.0 screen. Please let us know is there any other setting we need to do for this to start off smoothly. Is there any OWB server installation needed? Your early reply would be very helpful.
    Thanks & Best Regards,
    Ratna

    Hi Ratna,
Please follow the steps as given:
    1) change datetime in your client machine to current date.
    2) reboot your machine
    3) move the following files to another backup place eg desktop:
    $OWB92_CLIENT_HOME/jdk/jre/lib/ext/US_export_policy.jar
    $OWB92_CLIENT_HOME/jdk/jre/lib/ext/jce1_2_1.jar
    $OWB92_CLIENT_HOME/jdk/jre/lib/ext/local_policy.jar
    $OWB92_CLIENT_HOME/jdk/jre/lib/ext/sunjce_provider.jar
Where $OWB92_CLIENT_HOME is the path to your owb9.2 client home.
    4) Copy the 4 replacement files, (mail me to - [email protected], I'll send you the 4 .jar files), to the directory OWB92_CLIENT_HOME/jdk/jre/lib/ext/
    5)start owb…
If all has gone well, delete the files moved in step 3.

please note that the versions mentioned in the above thread might be different but the principles remain the same. Your client and repository verison should be the same at all times.

  • OWB client installation

    hi,
We have done the server side installation completely along with the client but the OWB Client window is not coming up.
Please suggest the reasons for the same.
    Regards,
    Pankaj

    Hi Pankaj,
what version of OWB yor are using? What do you mean by 'OWB Client window is not coming up'? Do you mean to say that you are clicking on design center icon (if its is a 10g version) from start > All programs > OWB HOME > warehouse builder > design center and the login screen is not opening ?
Please elaborate a bit more !
    Cheers,
    Swagata

  • Cannot launch OWB Client 9.0.3.36.3

I applied the 9.0.3.36.3 patch Archive successfully without any problems. Post installation, the OWB Client hangs without even bringing up the login dialog box. My desktop OS is Windows XP. Before this patch application, there was no problem with OWB Client. Anyone had this problem or know of this issue?
    Thanks,
    Chida

    Hi Chida,
What happens if you try to start the client using the .Bat file? It is in your OWB home, owb\bin\wind32
This gives you and us an idea on what is happening. If you get to the text in the dos box, please copy it and add it to the forum. We'll take a look at it.
    Thanks,
    Jean-Pierre

  • OWB client hanging

Installed OWB client 9.2 on my local windows XP machine.
When I start it it's hanging. I have more than 500 Mb memory available.
    Any suggestion?
    TIA

This is a bug due to an expired java package from Sun...If you have access to Metalink, check out bug # 4452391
To upgrade, get the below referenced files from
    http://java.sun.com/products/jce/index-122.html
    Then, follow the instructions below.
Here is a little info from bug 4452391:
The Java Cryptography Extension (JCE) 1.2.1 that ships with OCS 9.0.4.2 makes use of a certificate that expires on June 28, 2005. On or after June 28, 2005 applications will no longer be able to use JCE 1.2.1. More information about this issue can be found on the web: .
Upgrading to JCE 1.2.2 should solve this issue.
In a nutshell, the following jar files in the $ORACLE_HOME:
    $ORACLE_HOME/jdk/jre/lib/ext/US_export_policy.jar $ORACLE_HOME/jdk/jre/lib/ext/jce1_2_1.jar $ORACLE_HOME/jdk/jre/lib/ext/local_policy.jar $ORACLE_HOME/jdk/jre/lib/ext/sunjce_provider.jar
should be replaced by the following jar files:
    jce1.2.2/lib/US_export_policy.jar
    jce1.2.2/lib/jce1_2_2.jar
    jce1.2.2/lib/local_policy.jar
    jce1.2.2/lib/sunjce_provider.jar
Delete the jce1_2_1.jar file (You may have to reboot before it will let you delete it.)
It should then work for you.

  • Which folder requires the permission to run OWB client on linux server?????

I use to login to linux server by Xmanager by windows machine which requires a username and password, when i changed the password recently OWB started showing a error when exiting OWB client open on server throuh XMANAGER, It is asking for a permission on a particular folder..............can anybody tell me which folder requires the permission to run OWB client on server???

This is probably complaining about either the preference properties files or some other user preference files in owb/bin/admin

  • What is the best environment for OWB Client?

Our environment is mostly AIX 4.3.3.and 5.1 but we run Windoze on the desktop. The vast majority of our sources are Oracle on AIX and our test and production targets and repositories are AIX as well.
Would You (collective population) suggest running the OWB client on one of the AIX servers or from the Windoze desktop?
I noticed when using OWB Client from the Windoze desktop that when I define a Flat File source it wants to only look at desktop and attached drives. If I have flat files on one of my AIX servers, how can I use that as a source? Or even if I have OWB Client running on one of the AIX servers and the flat file is on another server, is the only way to get it via someting like NFS mounting?
Thanks for the advice to this newbie.
    /gary

As for the client part, there is no preference other than OWB is usually first released on the Windows platform and then certified on others. If you don't mind waiting several weeks or so for the updates, you can run the client on any available platform.
As for flat files etc. - you need to have flat files on the client only for file format sampling during the design phase, so a sample (with a couple of rows) of the 'real' file on you client is enough. When you deploy your design to the target platform, you will specify where the actual file resides (hostname, usr/pwd, directory etc.) - remember, once you deploy your design to the target, everything runs from there.
