OWB Speed

I find OWB development environment very sluggish at my client place. It takes lot of time to open a mapping or deployment manager etc. Export and import are very slow too. I have 800 MB on my desktop.
I found OWB much faster when Oracle and OWB running on same machine having 400 MB only.
Can someone suggest about what can be done to improve performance. Will indexing of Repository tables help. Should we analyze repository on regular basis. I am telling the scnario where 3-4 people working on same repository.

Hi,
There can be three factors affecting the performance of OWB Client working with Design Repository. Here is what you can do about them now as well as what OWB development has done (a lot!) to improve this in the next release (November 2004). They are in the order of greatest impact.
1. Design Repository management.
Problem: CHANGELOG table in the OWB design repository is typically several orders of magnitude smaller in row count than pctree, intralink, or interlink, so the nested loop plan is best. The optimizer's row estimate in the absence of gathered statistics does not serve us very well here.
Solution in the next release:
* Automated gathering of schema statistics (and refresh statistics on a regular basis)
* Increased use of SQL bind variables
* Improved SQL hints
* Ensured definition of all necessary indexes
* Used COMPRESS for indexes
Workaround for now: Try analyzing OWB design repository with the following statements. This is only worthwhile if the size of the repository is large.
exec dbms_stats.gather_table_stats(null, 'PCTREE', null,
DBMS_STATS.AUTO_SAMPLE_SIZE, false, 'FOR ALL COLUMNS SIZE AUTO');
exec dbms_stats.gather_table_stats(null, 'INTERLINK', null,
DBMS_STATS.AUTO_SAMPLE_SIZE, false, 'FOR ALL COLUMNS SIZE AUTO');
exec dbms_stats.gather_table_stats(null, 'INTRALINK', null,
DBMS_STATS.AUTO_SAMPLE_SIZE, false, 'FOR ALL COLUMNS SIZE AUTO');
exec dbms_stats.gather_table_stats(null, 'CHANGELOG', null,
DBMS_STATS.AUTO_SAMPLE_SIZE, false, 'FOR ALL COLUMNS SIZE AUTO');
exec dbms_stats.gather_index_stats(null, 'IDX_PCTREE_PARENTID', null,
DBMS_STATS.AUTO_SAMPLE_SIZE);
exec dbms_stats.gather_index_stats(null, 'IDX_PCTREE_CHILDID', null,
DBMS_STATS.AUTO_SAMPLE_SIZE);
exec dbms_stats.gather_index_stats(null, 'IDX_PCTREE_PARENTID_CHILDID',
null, DBMS_STATS.AUTO_SAMPLE_SIZE);
exec dbms_stats.gather_index_stats(null, 'IDX_PCTREE_CHILDID_PARENTID',
null, DBMS_STATS.AUTO_SAMPLE_SIZE);
exec dbms_stats.gather_index_stats(null, 'IDX_INTERLINK_LINKFROM',
null, DBMS_STATS.AUTO_SAMPLE_SIZE);
exec dbms_stats.gather_index_stats(null, 'IDX_INTERLINK_LINKTO', null,
DBMS_STATS.AUTO_SAMPLE_SIZE);
exec dbms_stats.gather_index_stats(null, 'IDX_INTRALINK_LINKFROM',
null, DBMS_STATS.AUTO_SAMPLE_SIZE);
exec dbms_stats.gather_index_stats(null, 'CHANGELOG_PK', null,
DBMS_STATS.AUTO_SAMPLE_SIZE);
2. Memory management.
Solution in the next release: A lot of improvements to prevent memory leaks and unnecessary flushing of needed objects.
Workaround for now: Try a higher Java Virtual Machine (JVM) limit for you OWB Client: Edit -Xmx value in [OWB Home]\owb\bin\win32\owbclient.bat from default 384M. This is only worthwhile if the client machine
has enough real memory to support the VM sizes of all actively running applications and if Windows Task Manager shows the owbclient java session Memory Usage and VM Size values close to the Xmx value, then OWB starts spending a larger portion of its effort managing memory.
3. Network latency.
Problem: Network latency is why having OWB Client installed local to the Oracle database containing the design repository will always be faster, as you observe "I found OWB much faster when Oracle and OWB running on same machine having 400 MB only." Obviously this does not solve the problem in multiple developer environment, but it is not as big of the factors above. We are confident that OWB Client 'chatting' over the network is already optimized.

  • OWB - OEM issue?

    OWB - OEM issue?
    We are using OWB repository 10.2.0.1.0 and OWB client 10.2.0.1.31 (Win XP). The Oracle version is 10 G (10.2.0.3.0). OWB is installed on Linux.
    I find OEM (10.2.0.0.0 with oracle database ver 10.2.0.0.0) part of OWB program folder. As I start OEM, I creted the database connection in OEM explorer. I tried to loggin to created database connection.
    I got “ORA-12541: TNS:no listener” error.
    It was working all day in OWB/Sqlplus before starting OEM. I noticed OEM changed my tnsnames.ora file in OWbhome\network\admin directory using timestamp.
    I came out of OEM session. All my logins via OWB/SQLpus/SQL developer results in “ORA-12541: TNS:no listener” error.
    I checked via tnsping on command window, which results in “ORA-12541: TNS:no listener” error.
    I restored my tnsnames.ora from backup, all are working except OEM.
    Did anyone use OEM with OWB?
    Any idea, what is going on ?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    over the connection goes not only the sql statements for connecting, also much auditing and logging informations goes from one machine to the other. So development and database should be as near as possible for better speed.
    Perhaps working direct on the server will increase the speed?

    Also careful consideration / deployment of ODI Agents allow you to run / execute / invoke you code from just about anywhere you want to (Target database, remote file system, source servers etc)

  • OWB and Citrix

    Hello gurus,
    We are developing a OWB project through internet by means VPN with a poor performance deploying and testing.
    Is there any experience using Citrix with OWB?
    If so, we would appreciate citrix setup for such a case.
    Thanks in advance,
    - Jose Luis

    I am not an expert in Citrix but my personal experience is that Citrix is only as good as the config of the server itself and add to it the network speed and number of users accessing. All these factors determine the performance of citrix as citrix is nothing but an enhanced windows server. also how many other applications are hosted on the citirx will bear an impact on performance.

  • Can PQO been used in DML statements to speed up multi-dimension query ?

    We have
    limit dim1 to var1 ne na
    where dim1 is a dimension.
    var1 is a variable dimensioned by dim1.
    This is pretty much like SQL table scan to find the records. Is there a PQO (parallel query option)-like option in DML to speed up multi-dimension query ?

    This is one of the beauties of the OLAP Option, all the query optimisation is managed by the engine itself. It resolves the best way to get you the result set. If you have partitioned your cube the query engine will perform the same way as the relational query engine and employ partition elimination.
    Where things can slow down is where you used compression, since to answer a question such as "is this cell NA?" all rows in the cube need to be uncompressed before the query can be answered and result set generated. Compression technology works best (i.e. is least intrusive in terms of affecting query performance) where you have a very fast CPU. However, the overall benefits of compression (smaller cubes) nearly always outweigh the impact of having to uncompress data to answer a specific question. Usually the impact is minimal if you partition your cube, since the un-compress function only needs to work on a specific partition.
    In summary, the answer to your question is "No", because the OLAP engine automatically optimises the allocation of resources to return the result-set as fast as possible.
    Is there a specific problem you are experiencing with this query?

  • OWB at Linux 64 Bit Environment

    Hi All,
    Iam new to Linux Environment.
    Our client is recently started updating OS from Windows to Linux.
    I would like to open Design centre in Linux server remotely from my desktop. Could you please provide steps?
    Regards,
    Ava

    Yes, you can run OWB client directly on the server.
    If you have a linux workstation, you can run Xwindows applications on server, and have the application window displayed on client!!! It is called X forwarding, and this is a feature that Xwindows had for years.
    Connect to your server using ssh with -X switch, eg.
    [alex@alex]$ ssh -X oracle@myserver
    once connected, go to the owb directory and run the client, which will display the application window on the CLIENT (your workstation), eg.
    [oracle@myserver ~]$ cd /oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1/owb/bin/unix/
    [oracle@myserver unix]$ ./owbclient.sh
    This way requires no additional installation on your machine, but OWB running over ssh can be a bit laggy. However, it is very usable. You can try to speed up the connection by using a cypher that is somewhat less CPU intensive, ie arcfour. The login would be then:
    [alex@alex]$ ssh -c arcfour -X oracle@myserver
    Keep in mind, that running OWB client on the sever this way requires 500MB to 1GB of RAM more on the server (the client application is executing there).
    The other option to run OWB on an linux 64bit workstation is to install the OWB 64bit (if you want to run 11g you can install the complete database server software, which comes with OWB) and run it normally on your workstation. This effectively limits the distribution you can use to red-hat, centos or fedora.
    I'm running OWB 10.2 64bit on my fedora 64bit workstation for 2 years without any problems. It may not be certified, but runs without a glitch.
    Bye

  • Help installing OWB 10gR1 "reviewers CD"

    Hi,
    can anyone help me with the install of the OWB 10.1.0.4 version of the "Reviewer's CD"? I'm trying to get up to speed (quickly) on OWB, and I know "Paris" is out, but wanted to go through the self-paced learning.
    The problem I'm having is this - I need to install the reviewers CD against a 10.2 database, when it looks like its designed for 10.1. I keep getting an error during the "setup" step - right after where the tables in the "review" schema are populated, I get an error saying that "sys_user does not have DBA privledges" (or something similar).
    I've tried this several times on different machines, different databases, etc. I'm sure that the sys user (obviously) does have DBA privs.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    Scott

    Hi
    I had the same problem in a project. Finally I used 10g1 db instead of 10g2, and everything was fine.
    But some days before I read a solution in this forum for your problem. Search the forum.

  • OBIEE & Informatica vs OWB

    Hello all
    Im not sure if this is the appropriate place to post this but I havent had any luck googling this
    Currently we are using OBIEE and OWB as our ETL tool
    There have been a number of issues with OWB regarding the speed of the interface being clunky that I wont get into
    Needless to say we are considering other ETL options, one of them being Informatica
    I read some where that Informatica is offered through Oracle and may be part of the OBIEE package? (It was a blog so it could be totally inaccurate)
    Would anyone know the cost difference between OWB, ODI and Informatica?
    From what I can gather, Informatica doesnt seem to be that much more expensive then OWB
    And ODI is the future
    I will be installing a sample of ODI soon to give it a test drive
    Thanks in advance

    Your best resource for this information should be your Oracle Sales person for your particular area. Oracle does sell Informatica but it's a package deal generally.
    Good luck.

  • How ODI is the best Product than OWB?

    I have heard that Oracle is quoting ODI for high price where as OWB is free with Oracle Database..
    What are the additional features ODI has when compared to OWB when OWB also supporting SOA,Webservices and EAI concepts?
    Which one is the best among OWB and ODI..

    Hi Harmeet,
    I hope its because ODI is an E-LT and OWB is ETL tools. As i said in the previous post E-LT approach needs less servers and provides good speed.
    Thanks,

  • Error while deploying a workflow in OWB

    Hi,
    I am getting the below error while deploying a workflow in Control Center.
    ORA-29532: Java call terminated by uncaught Java exception: java.sql.SQLException: The file /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.2/dbhome_1/owb/bin/admin/rtrepos.properties cannot be accessed or has not been properly created on the server XXXXXX. If the file does not exist or if the database owner (normally user 'oracle') does not have the required file permissions or if the file has not been properly created then the file can be recreated by running the SQL*Plus script /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.2/dbhome_1/owb/rtp/sql/reset_repository.sql (in a RAC environment the file must be manually copied to each server which is used for OWB). Otherwise if using a 10.2 database instance, then please run the SQL*Plus script /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.2/dbhome_1/owb/UnifiedRepos/reset_owbcc_home.sql.
    Did any one faced this issue before?
    Kindly let me know the steps to resolve the issue.
    Thanks.

    Hi Vidyanand,
    Did you create the runtime access user using the runtime assistant? Did you select the correct runtime repository (if you have more) to associate your runtime access user with?
    Note that there are 4 database roles being created when you create a runtime repository owner:
    - OWB_A_<runtime repository owner>
    - OWB_D_<runtime repository owner>
    - OWB_R_<runtime repository owner>
    - OWB_U_<runtime repository owner>
    If you would grant those roles to a user, then that user becomes an access user for the user with username <runtime repository owner>.
    Note that you can also use the runtime repository credentials to connect to the runtime repository for deployment purposes, but you may not want that because of security concerns.
    Thanks,
    Mark.

  • Memory speed on T400

    I have 2 ea. 2gb DDR3 PC-8500 1066Mhz memory modules installed in my T400. If I check the modules under Everest Ultimate 460 they read DDR2 running at 667 Mhz. If I use CPU-Z they also read DDR2 but don't show a speed. Has anyone else been able to check the speed of their modules and what program did you use? I don't see anything in the bios to cause the memory to run slower than rated. Do you think they are really running at 1066 MHz or do I have some type of compatibility problem. I get the same reading if I pull one of the modules out and check them one at a time.

    Short answer, yes, the DDR3 memory bus in your T400/T500 should show at 533mhz(+/- 1mhz)
    CPU-Z 1.51 will properly show as DDR3, previous versions may have incorrectly shown as DDR2

  • New FiOS GigE Wireless 'N' Router has slowed our wireless speed to a crawl...need help!

    This past Tuesday I installed the new N router.  Also, we upgraded to FiOS Quantum 75/35 (previously 15/5).  That was activated the following day.  I can't complain about the internet speed to our pc since it's wired.  Speed tests showed we were getting what was advertised. :-)
    For the wifi, I can't figured out for the life of me what's causing our devices (e.g., our Nexus 7 tablets) to have a link speeds of 65Mbps one minute and then drop down to 5 or even 1.  The same situation was happening with my HTC Incredible II phone, but I think that connection was tapping out at 54Mbps.  The bottom would just drop out of the signal for some reason.  Other times we couldn't even connect back in.  The devices would say they're not in range even when they were in front of the router.  Not sure if I fubarred the router install or what?  I just swapped out the current Fios router for this new one.  Pretty straightforward.  At first, I logged into the router software with the defaults, but then I changed the the username, pswd, SSID, etc. to match what I used previously.  I thought it was working fine the night of the install but not so much after Fios got bumped up in speed the following day.  Maybe just a co-inky-dink?
    I know you never get the same speeds compared to a wired pc but this seems worse (wifi-wise) than before the new router came along.  I've read that the 'N' routers can be finicky to set-up to run properly.  Maybe a setting or two is off?
    I don't know if the fact that my son's netbook's wifi card is only b/g compatible would slow our network down?  At this point I'm grasping at straws!  I talked with tech support last night for 40 mins to no avail.  I got the usual story about wireless devices running slower than wired ones, that these smaller devices aren't capable to maintaining higher speeds (which I'm not sure I agree with 100%), the more active devices you have slows down your network, etc, etc.  I get all that.  But something is going on or actually, it's not.  LOL!
    Why I don't agree with the above statement I mentioned is because I have my tablet at work now and the wifi speed is 54Mbps and it's constant.  So it seems to have no problems with this speed, unlike what I was told over the phone.
    Let me know if I can provide any further technical details that'll make it easier to help diagnose our wifi issues.
    Thanks for listening to me whine ,

    Thanks for the help, Hubrisnxs.
    Here's an update since I got home:
    Nexus7 (N7) took a min or so to connect to wifi when I got home.  When it did, speed said 65Mbps.  So I ran speedtest.net and got 27/20.  Shortly after that I tried again but it was hesitating.  I checked the speed and it was down to 5Mbps.  Brought it upstairs to router and pc, and eventually it was back to 65.  Ran speed test a few more times with similar results.  I did notice that the connection would intermittently come and go.  Not sure why.  Looking at the wifi section  on my N7, it says our network is out of range and the N7 is 2' from the router.  Every now and then my network will go to the top of the list and it'll say it's obtaining ip address, then secured with wpa/wpa2 psk and it's locked in.  So I hit the connect button and it's out of range again.  Of course, while I was typing it decided to connect after 10-15 mins of trying/nothing.  Says, signal strength excellent, 52 Mbps.  Spoke too soon.  It's off again.  Crap!  Back on again but speed was 19, now 5.
    I did check router settings and this is what I have:
    Performance mode ('n')
    WPA2 AES
    Channel 1
    nonbroadcasting SSID
    Maybe I'll try channel 11 next.....
    Just for the heck of it, here is the results from verizon speed test on our pc (wired of course):

  • New VMS/IPC boxes - speed and pricing

    For the most part, I've been a very happy FiOS customer. The internet side has gone out exactly once in the year I've had the service, and it was restored within an hour. TV has dropped out twice, both times very late at night (I assume for head-end maintenance). Reliability is better than every other ISP I've ever had, combined.
    That said..
    I wanted to snag another STB for the house - found out the local stores had all been closed (I can understand why from the financial aspect, but it was still a shock pulling up to my old store to pick up another STB.. and finding a "for lease" sign, when I'd been by there 2 months prior), so I looked at options online. The new VMS + IPC boxes looked promising, especially since they added the ability for the entire house to pause, rewind, schedule recordings, etc, from any TV - instead of only the DVR being able to do that (though the old boxes could stream recordings from the DVR).
    My chief complaint so far - while the VMS box itself is responsive, the IPC boxes are painfully slow to respond to anything. Picture quality is fantastic, but using them feels, to put it in nerd terms, like using a Pentium 90 with Windows XP and 128MB RAM. They take 5+ to respond to anything more than a channel change (and even that takes up to 3 seconds), and frequently "lose" remote key presses if you try to, say, hit guide, hit page down, then try to arrow down to the channel that you know is on the next page. It literally feels like a throwback to the earliest digital set top boxes from Comcast/Time Warner - the first ones with built-in TV listings in the mid 1990s. The speed is right on par with them; the only thing faster right now is they don't shut down for 30 minutes a day to update the TV listings.
    I've gone through the built-in diagnostics on the boxes to verify signal levels - they're decent (not perfect, but this is a 20 year old house with mostly original coax), but we have no pixelation or picture drop-out, so I would think they could carry the basic stuff between the IPC boxes and VMS pretty easily. The router certainly has no problem handling the 75/35 on the same coax (speedtest shows 85-90 down, 35-40 up, with a ~5ms ping, no matter which cable outlet it's plugged into)..
    My other complaint - why did Verizon move to "rooms" for pricing? I thought I was getting a DVR plus 3 STBs (since I ordered 3 STBs and asked for a DVR), instead of a VMS + 2 STBs - and I'm paying much more than I did for the old DVR + 2 STBs.
    With the griping out of the way - is there a reasonable chance that firmware updates will help with the speed of the IPC boxes? Or is there a chance it's a cabling issue? (I have no problem pulling new coax or cat5e, and I can provide signal levels if that'll help) If not, is there any chance of getting the old QIP7232 DVR + QIP7100 box back (and adding another 7100), and switching back to what I was paying before? I know they're a bit antiquated (especially the 7100s), but they were much more responsive, and didn't make me want to throw the STBs through the window. It just seems really rediculous that I'm paying such a large premium (plus the "upgrade fee") for equipment that, in terms of the user experience, is much worse.
    Again.. been a happy customer for a long time, but the new terminals are super painful to use.
    Thanks.

    If this is the case.  I think I will wait till the bugs are worked out
    Question what were you paying before and after for the boxes.   So what was the old DVR + 2 STB's and the new DVR plus 2 stb's
    Trying to get an idea of what you meant by way more.  Most people said same pricing and a small $20 or so upgrade fee

    I just checked my BIOS and my current setting is set at IDE although it also mentions that the default should be AHCI. Currently I have a dual boot of Windows 7 (need it for Tax software) and Arch
    So I guess, when I get the new HDD, I will first set it to AHCI and then install the OSes on it. See if NCQ helps any, and if not I will turn it back and re-install (if I have to). I am planning to have Windows only in virtualbox in the new drive.
    Anyhoo, while I was in the BIOS I found two things which I had questions about :
    1) Under Onboard Devices --> Integrated NIC , my setting is currently set at "On w/PXE" and it says the default should be just "On". Would it be ok to change it back to On since its a single machine and its not booting an OS on any server. I just don't want to have to re-install anything now since I will be doing that in the new HDD.
    2) How would I know whether my BIOS would support a 64 bit OS in Virtualbox? I checked some setting under Virtualization, but they weren't very clear.
    I will edit this post and let you know exactly what settings were present under the Virtualization sub-section.
