OWC Mercury On-The-Go 60 GB ext drive:  is it fully powered via FW?

Can anyone confirm if this external firewire drive is definitely powerable via FireWire only?

Supposedly it is; I am just curious if anyone can confirm this with personal experience. I want to get an external drive for back-ups, but really don't want to bother with a separate power supply.
Thanks!

If you look in the Power section in the specs you'll see…
Use of AC Adapter is optional, units are designed for Bus Power and do not require the use of external power source
… which means you do not need a power supply and FireWire will power this device.

  • Can I use the same TimeMachine backup (ext.drive) on my desktop and laptop (but one running Lion, the other Mtn.Lion)?

Want to use the TM backup from my desktop to keep my laptop up to date when I travel, and then vice versa, when I return.  The laptop (MacBook Pro) is running Mtn. Lion 10.8.3, but the iMac desktop is running Lion 10.7.5.  Is this even possible with the same external hard drive being used to go back and forth like that?

You can use the Time Machine backup files of the iMac onto your MacBook without any problem because your MacBook has got a newer version than the one the iMac has got. However, you shouldn't do it in your iMac, and if you do that, you might damage OS X because your Time Machine apps will replace Lion apps.
You can still restore individual data onto your iMac > http://pondini.org/TM/E3.html Note that you can back up both Macs onto the same external disk, but you can't use the same backup in both, so Time Machine will create another backup for each Mac you have

  • HELP! Cant import folders from ext drive to itunes

I've recently had problems with my PC so, decided to copy all the stuff from my 60gig iPod to my external hard drive. I uninstalled iTunes then reinstalled it & tried to copy the folders from my ext drive back into itunes but, it's not moving them all. A number of folders exist with the name of the band & these seem to be ok - they look like typical folders in a windows explorer view. There is a shaded folder called "music" which when opened then contains more shaded folders with the folder names of "F00, F01" etc. These folders will not import to itunes no matter what I do. I have tried to "import folder" but it doesn't work, I have tried to move the folders back to my C drive but itunes doesn't recognise them. I have updated the "advanced" tab in the preferences to my ext drive / pointed to the folder "music" but, it still doesn't import the files. Can anyone help or offer some suggestions please? I'm really hacked off by this as I cant sync my iPod up as I'll lose everything on it. thank you!!!

You are not the only one... Several threads exist on this topic - iTunes refusing to import (all) files from folders - but no solution yet it seems, and Apple is not responding at all...

  • How do I access the music from my Mac drive while booted into Windows?

How do I access the music from my Mac drive while booted into Windows via Bootcamp? I tried using MacDrive but it's not supported for Vista 64-bit edition. Is there another program out there that I can use? I just want to be able to access my music that's on Leopard while in Vista. Any advice will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Your best bet is to move the music on the Windows side since Leopard will be able to read and play the music from the mounted Windows drive (Leopard will not be able write anything to the Windows NTFS partition).
In your case it won't work the other way around.

  • OWC Mercury ext. drive will not mount via FW 800

    Hi,
I just tried to hook up my OWC Mercury ext. drive to my new Mac Pro via FW 800 on the back panel and the drive will not mount. It does not show up using disk utility. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike

Try shutting everything down, and unplugging everything for 10-15 minutes.
Then, plug things back in in this order: the external drive firewire cable at both ends; the mac's keyboard and mouse, then the AC power for the mac and the external drive, and lastly, anything else you have hooked up.
Turn on the external drive first, then start up the mac and see if it shows up.

My iMac suddenly can't read the backup hard drive I've been using for Time Machine.  I tried unplugging the cord that connects the HD to the iMac and plugging it back in, but I still get "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" below which are buttons for Initialize, Ignore and Eject.  I was using a cord that went from larger square plug to larger square plug.  So then I tried one that went from smaller square plug to what I think is USB (thin rectangular plug) of the sort that connects the keyboard and mouse. It's the type that my printers and scanners use to connect to the iMac.  I did NOT just upgrade the OS or anything.  The external HD is an OWC Mercury Elite All Pro. Thanks, Michael!  I do hear it at times spooling up and running. Just after I bumped the thread I looked for troubleshooting for this drive online and found the manual which suggested using Disk Utility which I've seen before accidentally (if I hit Command Shift U instead of Shift U to type "Unit" on a new folder for a student's homework ) but had never really noticed.   Disk Utility does see it and also a sub-something (directory?) which might be the Time Machine archives on the disk, called disk1s2), sort of the way that my iMac's hard drive shows up as 640.14 GB Nitachi HDT7... and has a sub-something titled DB iMac, which is what I named my iMac's hard drive.
Anyway the owner's manual just shows the image under the formatting section, not the troubleshooting section, but as soon as I saw it in the manual I remembered seeing it accidentally a few times, went to it, and am now verifying the disk.  Right now it's telling me that it will take 2 hours to complete the verification, so I guess I have a bigt of a wait.  :-)
Does that fact that Disk Utilities can see it mean it's not failed, or just that it hasn't completely failed?
I can see the virtue in having multiple redundant backups, or at least two backups. What do you suggest?  Two external hard drives?  I had this one linked by ethernet, and but I also have a cord that could link it by USB (like a printer), so if this one is reparable I could get a second one and link it by USB.  If this one is not reparable I could get two and do the same thing.  I do have an Airport so I suppose it's possible to get some sort of Wi-Fi hard drive (my new printer/scanner uses only the network and not a cable, although it has a cable that I used for the initial installation), but I'd suspect a Wi-Fi hard drive might have a higher price.
What hard drives, if any, do you recommend? I seem to recall that when I was looking at external hard drives 4 years ago, Apple's were substantially more expensive, which is why I got the OWC Mercury Elite All Pro.

  • OWC Mercury Pro not showing up to choose for applications

I bought the OWC Mercury Pro Optical Drive for my cd and dvds as recommended in some discussions, but It doesn't show up anywhere. It's not on my desktop or in finder or any of my applications to choose from. I did get to choose it for itunes.
I have downloaded the latest Patchburn driver, and I have also unplugged everything for a while to see if that would reset the firewire but no changes.
How can I get this drive to show up everywhere for me to be able to select it? When I can get it to show up in itunes, it works fine. It also is listed in the system profiler.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
My problem is similar to this one.
I bought an OWC Mercury Pro FireWire/USB2 52x32x52x CD-RW. It will read CD's that are already burned just fine. However, when I try to burn a new CD, the device doesn't show up as a writer and hence I cannot proceed with the burn process.
The OWC manual says to install FireWire Drivers if this happens. My imac, however, does not have a firewire port--only a USB 1.1 port. Before I bought it, I researched the product and it sounded like it should work with a 1.1 USB connection (backward compatible), albeit at a slow speed. The latter is not a major concern, as I only need to burn a CD occasionally.
Has anyone tried using this product with a USB 1.1 connection and/or does anyone have any ideas on how to remedy this?
The OWC tech people keep insuring me that there's nothing wrong with the drive, but they've not offered any suggestions on how to fix the problem.
This problem occurs with all of the burn software I've tried:
NTI Dragon Burn, Disc Burner 1.01, Adaptec Toast 4.1.2 and Discribe 9x.

  • Problems with early 2011 MacBook Pro 13" 2.7 GHz / OWC Mercury Extreme Pro

*Has anyone else experienced issues getting their OWC Mercury Extreme Pro SSD working in the early 2011 MacBook Pros?*
I am having difficulties getting OS X installed on the new OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 240 GB. When I install the SSD in place of the factory HDD and boot from the 10.6.6 reinstallation DVD the SSD is not visible to the installation program. If I quit the 10.6.6 installer and run Disk Utility (from the 10.6.6 installation DVD) the SSD is not visible. If I quit Disk Utility and run System Profiler (from the 10.6.6. installation DVD) the drive is visible and firmware and serial numbers are displayed. So like the drive is visible to OS X but the installer / Disk Utility can not see it.
If I put the SSD in an external USB enclosure it is visible - I can format the drive and copy files to it.
I also tried installing the SSD in place of the factory HDD, putting the HDD in a USB enclosure, booting from the OS X installation on the HDD and running the OS X installer from the 10.6.6 DVD. I was able to select the SSD as the target for the installation and the initial file copy was OK, but when the laptop restarted during the installation the SSD would not boot. The grey folder icon with the flashing question mark was displayed instead. Holding down Option while booting only gave me the option to boot from the DVD.
I also tried resetting the NVRAM and SMC of the MacBook Pro - this did not resolve the issue.
I spoke to OWC support who said they did not know of any compatibility issues with the new MacBook Pros and suggested I request a replacement.
The firmware version of the SSD is 350a13f0

This is my exact problem. I have had 2 of these drives so far and both of them have had the same problem with installation internally. The first one I was able to get operational using the method you described, ie: put the OWC SSD in an external case (FW800 was my choice) and install it there. But I encountered the sleep issues, so I sent it back for a replacement.
The second drive I was finally able to install using the second method, but now the computer regularly locks up. So I'm going to call again and hopefully the third try will work.
Just to clarify. The first drive had sleep issues, but had the older firmware. The second drive had the newer firmware (360 I think it is) and didn't have the sleep issues, but locks up while running.
I'm so irritated on how many hours I've spent on this issue. And their support department, though very nice, wasn't helpful at all. It's as if they never heard of this problem.

    Hi, Tom -
Another possibility - some versions of Toast (including all the 4.x, I think) have an interference issue with Apple's Authoring Support software and the Disc Burner Extension. The main symptom of this conflict is an inability of the Mac to 'see' an external burner.
In order to use those versions of Toast, it is necessary to disable these extensions in Extensions Manager -
        Authoring Support
        Firewire Authoring Support
        SDAP Authoring Support
        USB Authoring Support
        Disc Burner Extension
In order to use Disc Burner, it is necessary to disable the Toast extensions instead.
Remember to restart after making changes to the set of active extensions.
Many folk who use both Toast and Disc Burner find it convenient to create different sets of extensions, so that switching from one group to the other is easier.
Tip - you can change which set of extensions to use during startup. To do this, upon starting up the machine immediately press the Spacebar, keep it held down. Extensions Manager will open just before extensions would normally start loading, at which time a different set of extensions can be selected.

  • OWC Mercury Elite Pro External Hard Drive - Share with Windows Machine?

    Hi,
Others on this discussion have recommended the OWC Mercury Elite Pro External Hard Drive. Dumb question: my live-in girlfriend has a Dell XP laptop, and I have a MacBook. If we purchased an OWC hard drive with both firewire and USB, can we both use the external hard drive?
    Thanks, David

You can certainly use their drives between a Mac and a PC. As mentioned, either format it FAT32 witht he 4GB file size restrictions or partition it.
You can also use a program called MacDrive. It give a Windows machine that ability to read and wtite to HFS+ partitions. I have used it and it works nicely.
There is a timed demo, so you can try it out and see if it meets your needs.

  • OWC Mercury elite external

I have two OWC mercury elite external drives, one has a 250G drive and the other a 500G drive. OWC externals are very nice and sleep when the Mac does, nice advantage. Does anyone know if I could change the hard drive in the case to a larger one? I am thinking about the Hitachi 1TB drive. OWC now offers this unit but it is $395 where the drive itself is $250. Anybody tried to swap out drives in a OWC external case?

It shouldn't be any problem to open the case and replace the drive, then. A matter of loosening some screws, and when it's open, you'll need to disconnect a power connector, and the SATA connector. There may be another wire running to a power switch that would need to be temporarily disconnected.
Be sure to check on the position of any jumpers on the original drive, and make sure the jumpers on the new drive are in the same position.

  • Mac going to sleep and improperly ejecting external USB2 OWC Mercury Elite

I am using Mac OS X 10.4.8 (PowerPC), all updates installed. Since I haven't yet upgraded to a new Mac (waiting for Adobe Creative Suite Universal Binary), I have installed a working PCI card that gives me USB 2 capability (from Iogear). I have an external hard drive 300 GB OWC Mercury Elite Pro that has eSata, Firewire 400, Firewire 800, and USB 2. I haven't tried using the Firewire 400 with the external hard drive (my 400 Mhz PowerMac G4 is simply too ancient to have Firewire 800). So, I don't know if my problem extends to Firewire or not, simply because I haven't tried it. Obviously I don't have an eSata card installed in my mac either.
I am running OS X Tiger with the default Power Management settings. I had wiped my internal hard drive and reinstalled OS X and then did the upgrade to OS X 10.4.8 and did the rest of the updates.
I had backed up my music and my photos on my external hard drive prior to wiping my internal mac's hard drive. After reinstalling the OS X and updating OS X, I copied the music and the photos without a hitch to the iTunes and iPhoto libraries, using the USB2 interface. Anyhow, now that I've explained some preliminary background, here's my simple problem (since I'm too stupid to figure this out on my own, I thought I'd post a question here)...
After the copying was done, eventually my mac went to sleep (in about 20 minutes, from what I understand are the default settings). However, on waking, the computer warned me that the external hard drive had been improperly ejected.
This now has happened more than once, and the computer warns me that I might damage the external hard drive (I haven't changed the default formatting of the external hard drive, (Mac OS Extended). Since it has backed up irreplaceable family photos, I do not want this backup to be damaged.
What should I do? Do I really have to prevent my mac from ever going to sleep versus immediately ejecting my external hard drive before I ever walk away to do something?)
Thanks in advance for you help and advice.
    P. S., Followup question regarding my external hard drive...
I notice my internal hard drive is Mac OS Extended (Journaled). My external hard drive does not say that it is Jounaled. Does it really help the integrity of my data to have Journaling turned on on my external hard drive? Do I have to reformat it to turn Journaling on???
    Thanks once again.

Energy Saver and third party USB often don't go well hand in hand. I would though contact OWC and let them know you are having this problem, since they have a good track record of supporting the Mac platform. In the meantime, use Screen Saver instead of Energy Saver.
And always keep your data backed up at least twice as my FAQ explains:

  • Can't get Mac Pro to recognize OWC Mercury Elite Al-Pro QX2 Raid on eSata

    Hi Everyone,
I have a new OWC Mercury Elite Al-Pro QX2 Raid, set up as Raid 5, w 4 x 2TB Hitachi drives. I have been able to get it to mount on my Mac Pro via FireWire connection only, can't get it to mount via eSATA.
Since the purpose is video editing, I need the eSATA connection to work.
Any ideas on how to get the Mac Pro to see the eSATA?
I've tried switching eSATA cables to one that has been verified to work, still no luck.
    Thanks!

I have a new OWC Mercury Elite Al-Pro QX2 Raid, set up as Raid 5, w 4 x 2TB Hitachi drives. I have been able to get it to mount on my Mac Pro via FireWire connection only, can't get it to mount via eSATA.
    Dear Sunshine22,
The QX2 uses an Oxford 936QS chip that can require up to 45 seconds to startup all of the hard disks and become ready to accept eSATA controller commands. Usually, the QX2 enclosure will beep when it is finally ready.
The amount of time required to startup the enclosure can be longer than some eSATA drivers expect. There are two possible options you might try to get around this issue.
    1. Unplug the QX2 eSATA cable from the controller. Turn on the enclosure and wait 45 seconds or until the enclosure beeps indicating it is ready. Next, connect the eSATA cable and the enclosure should show up in Disk Utility within the next 20 - 30 seconds.
    OR
    2. Turn on the QX2 and wait for 45 seconds or until the enclosure beeps. Now restart the Mac Pro and the enclosure should mount on the desktop or show up in Disk Utility.
Perhaps one of these methods will mount the QX2 for you.
FirmTek has updated our eSATA drivers so that these work arounds are not usually necessary when an Oxford 936QS based enclosure is attached to a FirmTek PCIe controller.
    Good luck!

  • Audio dedicated HD: LaCie d2 Quadra, WD My Book Studio or OWC Mercury Elite

Hi, I'm choosing between the LaCie d2 Quadra, WD My Book Studio and OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro, pretty similar, looks like the only difference is the Lacie has 16MB cache, the WD is unspecified and OWC has 32MB... which had me leaning towards OWC's.
The lowest prices I've found are $150, $140 and $170+shipping (their website only) respectively. So although I was convinced about the OWC it is the most expensive one.
    1TB using FW800 BTW

    Theis PSUs die.
I had forgotten about my incident, I just avoid to buy their drives; but the other day I went to a "Mac service" and saw no less than 10 of them all broken. I asked and all were PSU fails.
Not BIG deal, but when you open it to save your data because otherwise you´ll have to ship it and pray you loose the guarantee. I´ll have to read A LOT of good things from Lacie to change my mind. They charge you for an enclosure and the enclosure fails... BIG DEAL
Just my experience and opinion. Maybe you buy one and you LOVE it.
