Owner of Universe and Connection

Hello,
We are on BI 4.1. How can I check the owner of the Universe and Connection? I mean the user who has created them. I went to CMC Home and it does not display user ID. The properties also does not diplay it.
Any other place?
Please advice if this is possible.

Having less universes and connections

Gurus,
I'm having typical situation where in my client has more than 200 universes and almost same amount of connections.
It is due to reason that as and when they grew their set of businesses, the users created their own set of universes and are having multiple set of data sources which are MS SQLServer2005, Teradata,Oracle,etc.
As I learnt further, some 400 reports are bveing used by key users which refer these universes and connections.
I checked the linked universes concept but there seems to be no key that may join more than 2 universes.
Is there any way by which I can reduce the
a) No of universes
b) Connections without having any issues at report ?
If yes, what all factors are to be considered for this situation ? Any references on this might be helpful.

Hi Sachin,
You can back trace from the reports.
Firstly, you can take out the list of reports which are important or are in frequent use by users.
Then using Query Builder, you can take out the universe names associated with these reports.
Using universe list, you can take out the connections used.
Then you can plan on which universes and connections to keep and which to decommission.

Multi-Source Universe - Swapping Connections a disaster-Connection can not be registered

Dear Experts,
1. What is the best way to swap connections with in an environment?
For example, in DEV environment I want to use another environment like integrated environment's DB?
I have to change all the table owners manually and if I have derived tables and custom LOVs, it's a significant maintenance and error prone.
2. If I migrate the universe to a UAT or PROD environment often I encounter, the connection can not be registered error

If you have three DB servers (Dev,Test,Prod ) and three bo servers (Dev,Test,Prod ) you need to create three different connections in Dev.
IN THE DEV SERVER
1. Create connection (Dev Connection) in the Dev DB to connectDev DB to BO Dev and then develop the universe.
2. Create another connection (Test Connection) in the Dev DB to connect Test DB to Test BO Dev
3. Create another connection (Prod Connection) in the Dev DB to connect Prod DB to Prod BO Dev
Then while promoting to Test environment, you need to send universe along with connection, but in the connection you need to change the Dev DB connection to Test DB connection ((Test Connection) (Select the connection -> Click on change connection)
Then while promoting to Prod environment, you need to send universe along with connection, but in the connection you need to change to Prod DB connection (Prod Connection)
And once the universe and connection are promoted successfully come back to Dev and change the connection to Dev DB (Dev Connection)

OLAP Universe and Voyager connection on BW Queries

Hi,
I have successfully created an OLAP Universe and Voyager Connections pointing to SAP BW Cubes. I want to do the same connecting to the SAP BW Queries. But when i get connected to the SAP BW system, I get a dispaly of just the Cubes and I am not able to see any Queries. We have created multiple queries in BW pointing the Cubes. But none of them are listed down.
Please let me know if this is an issue with the rights given to user which we use for logging into SAP system or some other reason.
Any suggestions and answers will be really helpful.

Hi Suma,
Please check if you have released the BW query for OLE DB for OLAP. Goto properties of the Query and on the Advanced tab see if the check box for "Allow External Access to this Query" is checked or not. If it is not checked then please check that box for the query to appear in your Universe Designer.

Creating a share in 10.5 and connecting with XP or Vista - My Experience

Here was my situation.
Client has a machine now running 10.5 on it that is sharing an external drive on the network for other mac users in the office to use as well as 3 Windows machines. I tested with an xp machine as well as a vista machine.
The problem I was facing was that I had to set up the windows machines to be able to access the shared drive on the machine running 10.5. On 10.4 this was done with sharepoints, which breaks in 10.5. Luckily, Apple incorporated a lot of sharepoints functions into 10.5.
First I had to create a Standard or Admin user for each unique user that will be connecting to the share, on the machine that the external drive is connected to. You have the option of creating a "share only" user, but that seems to only be for mac sharing because those accounts do not show up as available when you enable accounts to access the SMB.
Once I had the new accounts made, I had to go to "Sharing" in the System Preferences and click on "File Sharing". When selected you see "Shared Folders" and "Users" panes. I clicked the + symbol and pointed it to the shared drive, since one of the accounts will have access to the whole drive. In the user pane I clicked the + and added the user I created for that access.
Note at this point. If you use the same username and password of the user account in windows (case sensitive I believe) you will not have to specify a special username and password for access to the share. I did this with the first machine with complete access because he was the owner of the share.
So after I gave that user access to the whole drive he was able to find the 10.5 machine on the network and connect to the share without prompt of a password.
I then tried to set up the other two users who were not on the same subnet so they had to use "map network drive" on their PCs.
Again I added the target folder that they would have access to on the shared drive. I added their user as having permission to access it. But when I went to map the network drive, it could see the folder if I entered \\ip.add.res.s\foldername and clicked "browse" but when I tried to add it, the system said it was not found. I also made sure to click "change user name" and entered the username and password for the account with access to the folder.
So after tinkering a while I finally found that you must add the users to the main share drive list of users, even if they are set to "read only (dropbox)" or else they will not be able to access the subfolder assigned to them. It also did not make a difference if I removed the share drive completely and added just the subfolders and users individually.
I hope this might help somone out there who might be having a similar issue with getting xp or vista to use shared folders in 10.5.

Opening an Excel 2003 file in Office 2010 Universal Data Connection error when opening the file from a domain.

One of my users are having problem with old accounting files in Excel 2003 when opening Excel 2010.
The user experience that linked information is not being updated properly.
And suspects that it something do with Universal Data Connection .
How can an Excel 2003 spread sheet be converted to Excel 2010 spread sheet and still contain active links?
When the user is opening and converting the file as mention in your suggestion, on the common share on a common domain, the links "breaks".
we are not using SharePoint on our domain.
But when doing it on a local machine, the links does not "breaks".
Looking forward to get solved to this problem.

it sounds link, the links changed from relative paths to absolute path. You need to use absolute path in original file.

Crystal Reports-Universe and Business Views. Pros & cons. BVs to Universe

Hi Gurus,
We have around 500 + Crystal Reports developed on top of Business Views, Stored Procedures, Command Objects and some directly connected to the tables. No Universes are there in our current environment and all reports undergo frequent changes.
We are planning to replace Business Views with Universe and use them as data provider for existing Crystal Reports and also planning to do some ad-hoc reporting using Web-Intelligence. I have expertise in developing both Crystal Reports and Web Intelligence reports. But I never designed any complex Crystal Reports against Universe / Business Views. I heard that there are several issues with Crystal against Universe (e.g.: Cascading Prompts, LOVs, Row Level Security etc...) Most of our Crystal Reports have several sub-reports and some dynamic cascading parameters.
We currently have not finalized any tool. Some are advising not to disturb the current environment and some say migrating to Universe is a good option because Business View manager tool is going to be trashed in few years. My personal view is to used both Crystal and Web-I and replace Business Views with Universe because we can use it for both Crystal and Web-I.
Can you please post your views on this?
Also, please post the issues (& solutions) you got with Crystal Reports against Universe. Also advantages and disadvantages of using Universe over Business Views.
Environment: Business Objects XI R2 and Crystal Reports XI R2

As you said, an important item to consider is reusability: if you want to reuse your work between Crystal and WebI then you have to go with Universes. If you are ok in keeping the two in separate worlds then Business Views can still bring a lot of value to CR. Business views will stay in the market still for a long time (in mainteinance, so don't expect new features).
Looking at the future, we expect that In the long term, business views will be replaced by universes. Keeping this in mind, a migration of a report from an 'older' version of a universe to a new one will probably go smoother than a migration from a business view to a universe.

There is nothing to prevent him from downloading and installing the trial version (Adobe - Download free trial version Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 | Adobe). At the point all you need to do is provide him with the serial number so that he can activate it. If the intent is that he be the owner of the software then you might want to see about transfering the license...

Merge dimensions from universe and Excel file to display a value from Excel

I have a report with two sections similar to the following: customer, and a concatenation of customer-equipment. The customer and equipment are displayed as a header on each page, not as part of a table. Each page of the report has data for a single customer-equipment combination, but each customer can have several pages if that customer has several equipments. The data for customers and equipments comes from a universe, but certain combinations of customer-equipment need to display a label that is found in an Excel spreadsheet that also contains customer and equipment information. The label will be displayed in a free-standing cell, not in a table.
I created a concatenation of customer-equipment in the universe and in the spreadsheet to merge those dimensions. How can I retrieve the appropriate label from the spreadsheet? I want to have a free-standing cell that displays something to this effect: SELECT label FROM spreadsheet WHERE customer_equipment_combination_on_this_page = customer_equipment_combination_in_the_spreadsheet.

Thanks for the tip. I'm using BOXI 3.1. The spreadsheet looks like this:
Where the Concat column contains the formula "=UPPER(TRIM(A3)&TRIM(B3)&TRIM(C3))". The report looks like this:
The vertical table contains data from the universe. The universe also contains Customer, Equipment1, and Equipment2. And the report is sectioned, so each Customer/Equipment1/Equipment2 combination should be on its own page.
I imported the Excel data into Access and created a new universe to connect to that Access database, and then the labels display correctly. But for some reason it won't work if it is merging with an Excel document instead of a universe. The "Cust1 (Equip1/Equip5)" line used to be a free-standing cell on which the report was sectioned, but I replaced it with moved it a three row table for the customer, L1, and L2.

Userrights to use universes and WebI

Hi,
I have a BO Edge 4.0 SP2 server here and have problems with user rights: it's afresh installation and I can't create a new WebI document using the eFashion sample universe - I open WebI, login with a test-user, click on "new document", select the eFashion universe and just get "No business layer sent back from server".
I have a maybe similar problem with Crystal Reports 2011: again the same, I click on create new document and get the message that I don't have sufficient rights to use the eFashion universe.
I already added "Full control" to the universe-folder in CMC, Universes.
What's missing?

Deploying BO universes and webi reports in quality and production

Hi
We are on BO XIR2 SP5 and reporting on SAP BI Infocubes and Queries.
We have 3 environments setup,each for development,quality and production.
During universe development,while creating a new connection we provide the IP address of application server,username ,password,system id,client number etc details.
The above details would defer for 3 different environments.In our case we have built around 50 universes.
So what would be the smart way of deploying these universes in each of the other 2 environments?Because changing universe connection details would mean re creating the universe classes and objects which would be a huge effort.Would the webi reports continue to work upon re creating the universe with new connection details?
Please suggest a best and smart practice for the above scenario.

Using Import Wizard tool in BO you can migrate Universe and Reports from dev env to test.
Using the Import Wizard tool you can migrate the reports.
Steps are as follows:
Open Import window:
In Source environment , enter the details of dev environment.
Destination wizard you have to enter Test env credentials.
Then you have to select all the universe and the wid files from this wizard (The files you want to transfer ).
Finally finish this wizard by pressing finish button.........

Is it possible to create a new Universe that connects to this database?

I know that BO universes can be linked to Sybase, Access, Oracle databases, etc. but i don't know if it is possible to create a universe with a connection to a Firebird database .
Is it possible? In Universe Designer I try to create a new connection using the Connection Wizard, then I press Next and then it displays a list of databases nodes, but I can't find an option for Firebird. Which option should I select? Can I select Generic ODBC datasource?
Has someone else used Firebird for his/her universes?

Hi,
I would like to give you a workaround for your problem.
If you have BO Server installed on your machine then do the following
-> Go to 'Central Configuration Mangager(CCM)'
-> Right Click on 'Server Intelligence Agent(SIA)' and click 'STOP' then
-> Double click on 'Server Intelligence Agent(SIA)'
-> Go to 'Configuration' Tab
-> Click 'SPECIFY' on 'CMS System Database Configuration' button then
-> Select any one of the 3 options(depending on ur requirement) and connect to ur Database (Firebird) by giving the credentials of ur database.
-> After doing all the necessary things Restart the SIA by clicking the buttion START on CCM and now check if u r getting Firebird database while creating a new connection.
This is just a workaround. I hope this would b helpful to you. Please try this and see if its useful to you.

Steps to change universe database connection from SQL server to Oracle 10

Hi,
we are moving from sql server to Oracle 10.Please let me know the steps and various parameters I should consider while changing universe database connection from SQL server to Oracle 10.
Following are the steps which I assumed :
1.     create a new Oracle database connection or edit the existing connection to point to Oracle server
2.     Need to check sql for each object, having integrity check for universe will solve the purpose of parsing each object
3.     Exporting the universe after integrity check
4.     Report data testing
Let me know if I miss on any steps.Also what all factors I need to consider while moving to Oracle for eg: what @ custom sql,what @ table names,what @ LOV etc.

I will follow the steps you have suggested.
Actually I was searching for this on net and got to know that with Oracle database connection,theres lot of stuff needs to take care of in terms of custom sql and LOV and in our case,we have lot of custom sql for each object in the universe so just wanted to confirm.
I will do the changes and let you guys know in case theres any isuue specifically to Oracle.
