"Owners enabled: No" - Is this a problem?

Hi. I have encountered problems trying to install Snow Leopard. Three or four attampts all led to the following message:
"An error occurred when installing MacOSX.
Install failed. MacOSX could not be installed on your computer.
(-triangle with exclamation mark-)
The installer could not copy the necessary support files. Click restart to restart your computer & try installing again."
After looking through the menus at the top of the installer page I came across some installation log files, which mentioned that the MacOSX Install DVD was read only(!) Obviously this is suggestive of a faulty disk.
However before going down that route I'd just like to clarify one thing in particular. I am trying to install the OS after having installed a brand new hard disk in my MacBook. After formatting the disk with a GUID partition & looking around the partition info (& after reading through another support thread) I clicked on 'Disk info' & got the following readout:
Writable: Yes
Number of files: 2
Number of folders: 3
Owners enabled: No
Can turn owners off: Yes
Can be formatted: Yes
Bootable: Yes
Supports journaling: Yes
Journaled: Yes
Disk number: 0
Partition number: 2
Having seen one or two other readouts quoted in another thread I noticed that they had "Owners enabled: Yes".
Being a Mac novice I don't know what this means, but I suspect it might be causing a problem. Is that the case, & if so how should I rectify it?
Many thanks!

That is not the problem. Nor is the DVD being read only a problem. Your Snow Leopard DVD comes with telephone support from Apple. I suggest that you call them. I suspect you have a faulty DVD.

  • Disk Utility Shows "Owners Enabled: No" Even When it *Is* Enabled

I have an external AoE (Coraid) disk array that I have mounted to an XServe machine using OS X 10.6.8 Server.  I was having frustrating problems with file ownerships going away, until I figured out that it was due to ownership being disabled on this drive, which is the default for external drives.
So, I used Finder | Get Info and unchecked the "Ignore ownership on this volume" checkbox.  That seems to have fixed the problem, and ownership is now preserved on this volume.  I checked with diskutil as well, as it also confirms that ownership is enabled.
However, even after rebooting the machine, Disk Utility (the GUI) still says, "Owners Enabled: No" for this volume.  Absolutely nothing I can think to do will make Disk Utilty stop claiming that ownership is not enabled.  I even used diskutil to disable and then re-enable ownership.  Everything *seems* to be working, but this is still a concern.  Is it a bug in Disk Utility?
The volume's filesystem, btw, is Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, journaled).

Well, the volinfo.database is fine. You might check the system.log and the asl.log for any entries about diskarbitrationd but I have a feeling you won't find anything. You could double post over in the Server forum or over at MacOSXHints- has a bunch of server admins who visit there frequently.

  • Owner enabled: No

I have an external hard drive that I keep all my music and iTunes Media on. I back it up once a week, using SuperDuper - ag reat app. It has a Smart Update funcntion that only copies files that have been added or changed since last update. It usually takes very short time - 15-20 minutes. Until recently, when I got a new (larger) harddrive for the media-files. Suddenly it was as if it checked AND copied everything, taking up to 7 hours to back up 520gb. From an external USB2 to another USB2 drive. I've corresponded with the (very helpful) guy who created SuperDuper and part of the problem (if not the whole problem) is that Ownership of media-drive is set to No (when I look in Disk Utility). When I select the drive and Get Info, I can't choose the option "Set (Me) as owner. It's greyed out. I've reformatted the drive, made sure it's GUID and it's still not set to Yes in Owners enabled. Also it say that there are, I think 8 or 9 files on it taking up 82? mb. I've tried using TinkerTool to remove hidden files but it didn't hange Disk Utility's info.
Can anybody recognize this, and help me solve the problem?
Thanks in advance for any help
    Carsten

If it is set to ignore permissions, I wouldn't know where to look, how it would've been set to that or how to change it. Here's what Terminal said in copy-pasting your command and following the instructions. Just for the sake of it; Mechatronic III is my internal harddrive and imac is my user/home. • "iMessage needs to be enabled to send this message?

What does "iMessage needs to be enabled to send this message" mean?  I can't get my messages to send and when I try that pops up. What is it and how can I fix it?

I have a similar problem as the OP, I wished to disable iMessage just to avoid the complications of having two messaging systems. Also, I never use data and always keep it off in order to save battery. Third, I noticed that when using iMessage, sometimes others' messages to me reach me late, i.e. they would send it at 3 pm and I would receive it at 6 pm when I turned on my wi-fi (remember, I have data off always). For these reasons I chose to completely disable imessage.
However, for one of my contacts, I noticed that the "send" button was still blue, rather than green (as you know, green is for ordinary SMS while blue is for iMessage). When I try to send this person a text, I naturally get the "imessage needs to be enabled to send this message". I tried the solutions in this thread, but none of them worked.
However, I managed to find a workaround. First, I turned on iMessage, then I turned on "send as SMS if imessage not available" in the settings. Then, I disconnected my wifi and data so that imessage would not be available, then I tried to send an iMessage to the person in question (the one with the button stuck on blue). This time I did NOT get the error message, but the iMessage tried to send anyways, getting stuck when the bar was around 85% complete. Then, I pressed on the speech bubble being sent, and manually chose "send as text message"). Voila! the button suddenly turned green, and now I can send regular texts to that person again!

  • Does anybody know how to solve this font problem?

    Hello everyone,
I have had this font problem for weeks now and I can't seem to get it solved. There are a number of fonts that won't load properly in Illustrator, PS, and InDesign. They are loaded in the system, but refuse to show up in the list. I've installed them in the home directory/library/fonts. These are commercial opentype fonts and one homemade opentype font. Sometimes the font that I created will appear, other times it does not, but many other fonts refuse to show up in the font display lists of these 3 software packages.
I've cleared the font caches with FontNuke, everything looks like it should work properly, but it does not. Also, with Font Book, I've resolved any duplicate font problems. Does anybody know how to solve this problem? Is this a known CS4 bug?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm using the latest Mac Mini and CS4 software.
    Thanks in advance.
    CB

    Hi,
How do I check if the fonts have the correct creator and so on?
Anyway, I've spent the better part of today validating and removing suspect
fonts. Why does the right click choice for resolve duplicates and the
validate font behave completely differently in Font Book? I discovered that
when this is investigated further with the validate font command, I found I
had a massive amount of duplicates that according to font book cause minor
errors. I thought that would have been sorted out with the resolve duplicate
command, instead I ended up check marking and manually removing the fonts
    that had minor errors.
I still have many commercial fonts plus my own font not showing up in
Illustrator or PhotoShop. If I copy and paste the font directly into
InDesign's font folder, my font shows up. I also tried removing my font to
see if this would fix any of the other problems. It doesn't. I did type in
my font name in the console dialog box and this message is displayed for
this font as well as mine and many others.
10-04-06 5:21:09 PM Font Book[12940] ##### ERROR:  The font system thinks
    the font
    file://localhost/Library/Fonts/Voluta%20Script%20Pro/VolutaScriptPro-Regular.otf
is active, but the file no longer exists!
Then I went back to font book to check to see if it is there and it is
enabled. For my font the caution triangle appears with the multiple copies
of the font is installed. Resolving duplicates doesn't solve this problem.
Any ideas of how to fix this problem?
    Thanks

  • How do you change "Owners Enabled" for a drive in disk utility?

    Hi all,
I just got a new Mac Pro and added a couple of internal drives to it. After formatting them in disk utility I noticed that "Owners Enabled" is set to "No" for them. This concerns me. How do I set it to "Yes"?
These are the things I tried:
    - I verified that "Ignore ownership on this volume" is unchecked in finder. I actually toggled it on and then off.
    - I used "vsdbutil" in terminal to enable permissions for the volume and verified, using it, that they are indeed enabled.
    - I unmounted and remounted the drives in disk utility.
    - I restarted my machine.
Basically nothing I've done has been effective at turning on "Owners Enabled" for the drives. How do I do that? And what exactly does it mean if it's set to "No".
Thanks for any help, I wish this was all clearer.

FYI, 755 only allows write by owner, group is read and execute only. 775 would allow group write as well. 777 is read, write, execute for everybody.
Anyway, a coworker pointed me towards diskutil which seems to be the current best way to muck with disk settings.
    http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/ man8/diskutil.8.html
It specifically has an "enableOwnership" command which would be run something like this:
    diskutil enableOwnership /Volumes/DriveName
    or
    diskutil enableOwnership /dev/disk2
You can do all kinds of other stuff too with diskutil. It looks like an excellent way to quickly screw up your drive.
Thanks again for your help, I have quite a number of things to try now.

Hopefully one of these steps should solve the problem.
    1. System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers
        Highlight  Internal Speakers
Make sure that Mute is not enabled.
    2. Remove the headphone.
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.
    3. Reset PRAM.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    4. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
        Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
    5. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
        Audio Devices window
        Side Bar
        Click the Built-in Output.
Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so, uncheck it.
    6. System Preferences > Sound> Sound Effects
        Play sound effects through:
Select "Internal speakers" and then back to "Selected sound output device".

  • What does "Owners Enabled" mean in Disk Utility

    Hi -
Not an emergency - I'm not having any issues at this time - but a matter of curiosity.
I have 5 Firewire drives hooked into my G5 and only the main HD and the Time Machine drive say "Yes" next to "Owners Enabled" in Disk Util. The other externals indicate "No". What does Owners Enabled mean. should I endeavor to make them all to say Yes?
    Thanks,

    Hello Josh2000,
Check out this older thread for more help and information. It should be able to answer your questions. Basically it has to do with permissions and whether or not they are enabled on a particular volume or not.

  • Owners Enabled if Off, How do I turn it On?

Using OS 10.4.8. G4 450, with two internal drives. I cannot write to the second drive, and Disk Utility indicates "Owners Enabled Off". How do I reverse this? In an earlier post someone had suggested the following:
"More than likely your /private/var/db/volinfo.database is corrupt. There's a bug in Tiger where two volumes will be referenced on the same line. You could try to manually edit the file. Or you can remove the file in single user mode. Then reboot. Also see vsdbutil -h"
If this is correct could someone please walk me through step by step on how this is accomplished?

  • External Hard Drive won't mount; "Owners Enabled: No"

I have a Maxtor external drive mounted with my airport. It was working fine. I disconnected it and then connected it directly to my MacBookPro. The laptop wouldn't recognize the drive. Disk Utility will recognize it, verified it, found two errors and repaired them. The drive is partitioned. When I get information for either partition it says "owners enabled: no". When I connect it to my iBook running OS 10.3 the laptop recognizes the drive, but when I try to open either there is a message saying that I don't have permission to open the it.

Is/was the drive ever password protected?
Baring that, I would connect it directly and in a terminal look at the mount privileges.
The mounted drives are located in /Volumes
Here is what my Lacie looks like:
    Two partitions -
    drwxrwxr-t 31 root admin 1156 Nov 7 16:42 LaCie_1
    drwxr-xr-x 31 xxxxx xxxxx 1088 Nov 7 17:14 LaCie_2
(where the xxxxx is me, the current user - xed out for security purposes)
the initial 'd' is because it's a directory
the 'rwx' are permissions for user, group, other in that order.
the 't' is a stick bit - unimportant AFAIK
In both these partitions the owner has read, write, execute permission.
root owns the first, because it's my Tiger bootable clone.
I own the second because TM uses it as well as me for oddball storage.
The '31' is the link count - I am not sure that is important.
So take a look at your drive when it's mounted and let's see if there are any obvious differences.
the command to see these attributes is ls -al
Isn't it nice to have a hood under which to work?
We will get to the bottom of this.

  • Owners Enabled: No - My Firewire drive crashes my mac

My Mini runs 24-7 and it uses the 250Gb Iomega drive designed for the Mac Mini. Roughly every other morning my mac presents no screen and the keyboard is non-responsive so I poweroff from the power button and everything is fine for about another 48hrs. With the Iomega drive unplugged I am now at 36hrs without a crash. I have noticed that in Disk Utility the two partitions on the internal show 'Owners Enabled: Yes' and that the three partitions on the Iomega drive show 'Owners Enabled: No' ls -l shows Owner and Group as 'Unknown' chown & chgrp have no effect.
How do I enable owners? I have asked a few Mac experts but no one knows. Is there a saviour out there? A true Mac guru?
Mac Mini (PowerPC)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

You have to examine the infowindow for that mounted disk to set the permissions ignoring status. Select the disk and press cmd-i for the window.
I had the same problem for a while with my PowerBook and external monitor. I would discover in the morning all was black and keyboard dead. Rebooting was the only way to recover the screen. I solved it by trashing the file
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    and relogin.
That problem is probably unrelated to your mounted disk.

  • What is Disk Utility parameter : 'Owners Enabled' about?

There is a parameter in the Disk Utility dialogue window , bottom left corner that says (on mine) Owners Enabled: No.  What does that signify and how, where or why is it set?

That parameter can be set manually in the getInfo window of the drive itself (in Finder, not inside Disk Utility). See if this adds any insight:

I am not sure if some day these terminologies can be standardized so someone can follow very specific instructions rather than vague instructions that are further obfuscated with the use of technical acronyms.
That is the problem, that error message in VM is not explicit enough as to what steps to take to correct the problem. These bois screen authors decide arbitrarily to name settings as it relates to their world personally and there are not standards.
I still don't know how that  got changed in the first place but that is not an issue with VM ware as to what else is changing the setting.
Do you have any explicit suggestions as to how the error message can be improved?
