P/w's lost disc drive broken ibook g4

I have an old ibook g4 that has been in a drawer for a while and I suddenly wanted some information from it that I hadn't migrated to my new macbook pro. I haven't got a clue what the passwords are, even with the hints I gave to myself, it's three years since I looked at it. I did my student dissertation (conservation of historical objects) on this machine and I now have a studio and there are some recipes on there that I need on how to clean leather and a recipe for an airbrush medium (museum standard) and it's on this machine!!!! towards the end of my degree I ended up in hospital for 8 months, now recovered can't remember these passwords. The disc drive is broken on this g4 (which is why I got a new macbook pro) so I can't put the start-up disc in to reset by pressing the 'C' key. HELP please, I bet there's loads of other info on there that I've forgotten about like photos that I haven't seen in ages etc................... The charger lead's a bit loose but have managed to get it charged up but how do I get past this first screen????????? Hopeful that something can be done....... Can't remember what operating system exactly but know its O X

Hello, Welcome to the support community
You could try using your iBook as a FireWire drive to access your content. It would require a FireFire 400 to 800 lead, which will go between your iBook and MacBook This is called FireFire Target Disk Mode
Here is some information to help you
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
The only other way would be to remove the iBook's Hard Drive and place it into an external casing, allowing the drive to become an external USB drive.
Such as this http://www.amazon.com/HDE-Hard-Drive-Case-Enclosure/dp/B001AAVC2E/ref=sr_1_1?ie= UTF8&qid=1348662507&sr=8-1&keywords=2.5+ide+usb+hard+drive+caddy
They can be ordered from, places like Amazon or any good electronic retailer.

  • Disc drive broken. I think

I'm having problems with my system a lot lately, i really enjoy my ps4 and I am well aware that all products have the occasional fault, but with my ps4 it continues to eject and not accept discs. I've tryed all methods that i have found on youtube and the forums and have no luck. I am with in warranty with sony and my retailer, should I get a replacement or do any readers of this know an alternative fix for the disc drive problem. Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

It sounds as though you've tried everything so as it's within the warranty period I'd suggest you get it replaced or repaired.

We need more info about your Mac to see if it will even be capable,
So we know more about it...
At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac,  report OSX version, then click on More Info, then click on Hardware> and report this upto but not including the Serial#...
    version 10.7.3
    Hardware Overview:
    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac7,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo

You'll need to buy SL/10.6 first & get it to 10.6.8, then get Lion... if you can run it. But then you'd need another Mac with a good Disc Drive & Firewire on both.
Or if you can erase your disk...

  • Upgrade os with broken disc drive

Got a macbook 10.4.1 need to upgrade but the disc drive is broken - any suggestions?

haha i just remebered that there´s a little trick you can use..
look out for someone ( e.g. a friend) who bought osx lion in the mac app store, ask him/ her to login at your mac and download osx lion again on your device, it´s free to download it more than one time, you don´t have to buy it twice

  • I tried to update my macbook pro, the screen is now frozen. My track pad hasn't been working for awhile and my disc drive is broken. IS there anything that can be done without buying a new laptop. It was bought in 2009

My track pad has not been working properly for awhile and my disc drive it damaged. I went to update my macbook pro to maveric and it is now frozen and not allowing me to click anything. Is there anything that can be done to fix this without buying a new one? Its from early 2009

    ShelbyMackenzieLynne,
when you say that your disc drive is damaged, do you mean your MacBook Pro’s hard disk drive, or do you mean its SuperDrive (the CD/DVD drive)?
When you’d updated your MacBook Pro to Mavericks, did the installation succeed, and subsequently freeze up? Or did it freeze up during the Mavericks installation?
Which version of OS X was installed on your MacBook Pro before you’d installed Mavericks?
Are you currently able to boot into the Mavericks recovery partition? To see if you can do so, hold down a Command key and the R key while starting up your MacBook Pro.

  • How do I download/install Photoshop & Premiere Elements 10 on new iMac with no disc drive?

My iMac hard drive recently failed and I lost everything. I just bought one of the new iMacs with no disc drive.  I had purchased Photoshop CS5 in 2011 but it came with CD's for install.  I stil have them but it doesn't do me any good since there is no disc drive to put them in on the new computer. How can I install Photoshop using my serial number from my original purchase?  I downloaded the CS6 trial version and when I try to activate it with my old serial number it says it is invalid.

There are links to trial installers on pages:
    http://prodesigntools.com/all-adobe-cs5-direct-download-links.html
    http://prodesigntools.com/photoshop-elements-10-direct-download-links-pse-premiere-pre.htm l
Very carefully read and follow the instructions on the pages!
Download and install the trials, launch and activate them with your serial number then do 'Help > Updates'.

  • Disc drive

    i'm on a macbook g4 15" with 10.4.11
i've been having a problem with my disc drive for awhile. I accepted a while ago that it was probably just physically broken, but I noticed recently that when I insert any sort of disc, whether it be a pristine DVD or crappy wav. CD that it does seem to read the disc and everything, yet it spits it out after about 15 seconds and never mounts an image or anything. I'd appreciate any help, because if I can't fix this, I may have to buy a new computer, which I'd rather not do on a college student budget.

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
Here's a step-by-step guide to replace the optical drive: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/PowerBook-G4-Al-15-Inch-1-5-1-67-BT-2-0-LR/64 . Click on optical drive removal.
If you have the 1.67Ghz Powerbook with dual layer drive and hi-rez screen (Oct 2005 and later), here is a replacement optical drive: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Panasonic/MMINISL8XDL/
If you have the 1.67Ghz Powerbook with standard cd/dvd drive (does not have the hi-rez screen, built Jan to Oct 2005), this would be a replacement drive: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MCTDVDSDB8DL/
I've bought from OWC before, and recommend them as a mac vendor.

  • SL won't mount via USB disc drive

    Hi there
I am desperate to load SL. My internal disc drive is broken so I use a Ritmo external trouble is I pop in the SL disc and it does not recognize there is a disc there. I have popped in other discs with no problems... tried to find it through disc utility not there.... I copied the SL disc on my PC to a thumb drive and popped it in but the format did not work..... how am I going to get SL onto my Macbook! Any help appreciated......

One way are another you are going to need to find a Mac that will read the disk. If you can gain access to an appropriately equipped Mac or PC for each, then you still have these install options:
    1. Use [firewire target disk mode|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661].
    2. Use the [remote install method|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/21219.html].
    3. Clone the installer DVD to an external drive; attach it to your machine; and install using the clone.

  • RE-Install Tiger with no disc drive.

    Here's my problem:
Old MacBook 1.83 GHz with a disc drive that seems dysfunctional. It actually did not read any CDs or DVDs, and was recently replaced by a third party warranty company. When I received the computer after the warranty work, it read CDs again and allowed me to boot from the MacBook restore disc. I erased my hard drive in anticipation of reinstalling Tiger. During the verification of the install disc, it spit an error message at me saying the disc was dirty or smudged, suggested that I remove it and clean it, and then try again. I did this, and received the same message. The disc looks sparkly clean with no scratches or fingerprints. I then chose to ignore the warning and install anyway. Install eventually failed and asked that I restart the process.
The warranty repair noted that there was a mounting bracket that was broken and it was not covered. THe note explained that the tech was going to try and complete a makeshift repair that allowed the drive to work. I suspect that there is something wrong SOMEWHERE (who knows where) related to the optical drive that is preventing me from successfully reading the disc and installing the software. On another note, the drive will NOT start up from a retail Tiger DVD either. (For reference, I was initially using the 2 discs that shipped with the MacBook for the reinstall.) I called a friend, who is quite knowledgeable on this and recommended I turn the Macbook into a firewire drive (T key at startup) and use a different Mac to read the disc and install the software directly to the now empty MacBook. That did not work either. Once I got to the install screen and allowed to select a volume to install Tiger to, it would not allow me to use the MacBook saying it could not install because it was unable to startup using Mac OS X.
So I'm stuck with a white MacBook brick, unless I can find a way to read the disc properly, or install from some external source. Are there any ways anyone knows I could get OS X onto the MacBook?? Thanks.
I'm usually really good with this kind of stuff, but I'm stumped and excruciatingly frustrated.

I have a very similar problem: white 2006 MacBook with a bad optical drive, had to replace internal hard drive, cannot figure out how to use machine-specific system restore discs to install the OS on the internal. I've been puzzling over this, and here's what I think I've discovered:
    Problems being:
    * Can't use retail Tiger disc, because it will not install on an Intel MacBook. (From what I've read, there are no standalone retail Tiger discs for Intel machines.)
    * Installing via FireWire target mode from on other machines wouldn't work, because other models won't boot from these machine-specific Software Restore discs.
    * Can't put disk images of the install discs on an external drive and install from there (at least I don't think that will work).
Potential solutions left, as far as I can tell:
    * Create bootable partition on external hard drive. Using Disk Utility on another machine, "Restore" the installation disks to this external HD partition. Boot MacBook from this ext. HD partition, and then install from those images onto internal HD.
    * Buy Leopard retail disc, boot other machine with it, and using FW target mode, install on the MacBook internal HD.
    * Get an external optical drive or replacement internal drive.
In my situation, all three remaining solutions involve a purchase, which I'd like to avoid (good money after bad). But if any of them work for you, good luck!

  • What macintosh had a floppy disc and disc drive?

I used to have a macintosh of some sort, ( it had the rainbow logo ) and I got rid of it because it was broken beyond repair. now I regret doing that because I miss its antique feel and would be interested in finding the serial number or at lease some sort of identification as to what it was called. I can't remember much other than it was a desktop and had color screen it was also that old yellowing plastic color so it had to be somewhat older. Anyone have any idea to what it could of been ?

I have, and currently use & love, a Macintosh Performa 6360 .  It had the separate HD with Floopy Disk  and Disc Drive .  Because of a programme I was using, I never upgraded to the System 8 but it is my understanding that it was capable of running 8.  Since I also have an iMac 17 " Flat Panel that someone wants to buy,  I purchased a 21.5" iMac -  Big mistake - the 21.5 doesn't have the flexibility of the screen, no more Appleworks, etc . so I go back to the iMac 17" Flat panel.  Rarely use the iMac 21.5"  as I think its geared more to business whereas the others were for everyone.  You can find info on the Performa 6360 at http://www.everymac.com/systems/by_year/index-macs-mac-clones-by-year.html.  Before the Performa, I was using the Mac Classic II but sold it because of the tiny screen.
Hope this helps you find what you are looking for.

  • Disc drive causing problems

I've recently bought an iBook and have noticed that the disc drive is scratching the top of the discs when ejected. Has anyone else had this problem and is it something worth getting back to Apple about?

    Hi Emma,
    Welcome to the discussions.
You have posted in a section that is for the "Clamshell" type iBooks (G3). It might be better for you to post your issue in the iBook G4 section. That way you have a greater chance of someone more familiar with your model of iBook seeing your issue and responding to it.
    Cheers!

  • Retrieving disc from dead ibook which won't turn on?

Hi. How would I go about ejecting a disc from my dead ibook? I've tried resetting the PRAM / PMU, neither will work. It won't turn on at all. I really just need to get a disc out of the disc drive. Is it possible? How would I go about doing it?
Also, is it possible to retrieve a file from the HD? (this is far less important).
    Thank you!

The usual way is to hold down the mouse button as you start it up, but that probably won't work for you if it won't start up at all. But you could try anyway.
An alternative is to prop the iBook up with the slot pointed down and if you're lucky the disc will eventually drop out thanks to gravity.
Another thing that you can try--get something very thin like a business card or very thin plastic ruler and some two sided sticky tape and see if you can stick the disc and pull it out. Be sure the tape is well stuck to whatever you are using--you don't want to lose it inside the drive.
If the iBook is truly dead never to be revived, you could just take it apart until you get to the optical drive and then take that apart.
As for the hard drive, you could take it out and put it in an enclosure. It would then be an external hard drive and you could access the data on it. As long as it will spin up, you should be able to do this.
Disassembly instructions can be found at:
    http://www.ifixit.com/
How come the iBook is dead? Will it just not start up, or is there some other known issue like a dead logic board? If it just won't start up, it might be worth a little troubleshooting to see if it can be revived. If you have access to an Apple Store, you could try an appointment with the genius bar and see if they can get it going, maybe with a known good power adaptor. If not, post back for help with this.
    Good luck!

  • Compatible usb disc drive for MacBook?

Apparently lots of external USB drives are compatible with Macbook. I bought a Qubz one and it doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions?

No, I mean a CD/DVD drive. The disc drive in my MacBook is broken. I need to install a new version of ilife which I was hoping the Genius bar would tell me is possible without using an install disc (which it isn't)
They suggested I get an external USB disc drive and install that way... so I bought one and the MacBook Can't even recognise it's connected. The drive is working (lights are on and making a noise) and is powered from the USB port but the MacBook isn't having any of it!
