P100-240: Toshiba GPU driver is old, Nvidia driver doesn't enable the fan?

Hi,
I was wondering if Toshiba could explain their choice here.
My laptop recently got sent in for repair because it burnt itself out due to me using Nvidias own drivers on my p100-240 (pspa3e).
The problem here is that:
a) Toshibas drivers for this card are well over a year old and sometimes buggy in new games
b) Toshiba does not seem to have followed the Nvidia spec (that or there is a major ACPI issue in their bios...)
so, Upon using the Nvidia drivers the laptops fan does not kick in, sending the systems temporature up to 106cand finally turning it off. It turned back on but basic graphics acceleration then failed to work.
SO, can we get an updated driver build? OR some kind of fan control app? or can you update your bios to enable nvidias drivers to function?
I feel like I cannot use my laptop for its purpose at the moment- I have reverted to installing a non-ACPI pc driver to force the fans to stay on which works well but then basic system functions like turn off do not work.
I have also been advised that this design flaw could be considered to make the system "not fit for purpose" under which case I could just return the laptop under the Sale of Goods act.
Though really, i'd just like to get my system working properly. It's bad enough not being able to run Linux on it, but even worse that windows doesnt work properly with it with official drivers.
One final question: Can I get the older BIOSes? several fixes work with them but not with the 4.0 bios (mainly linux fixes but as long as one OS works I don't care!)
Any tips on this are also welcome! Thanks for your help. :-)

Hi
>was wondering if Toshiba could explain their choice here.
If you want to hear anything from Toshiba then you have to contact them. This forum is only a user to user forum and unfortunately you will not find anyone from Toshiba here.
But maybe you want to hear my opinion;
>My laptop recently got sent in for repair because it burnt itself out due to me using Nvidias own drivers on my p100-240 (pspa3e).
>a) Toshibas drivers for this card are well over a year old and sometimes buggy in new games
Well, many Toshiba notebooks are delivered and equipped with the same graphic cards. Maybe you have to look in other notebook series which are delivered with the same card for a newer GPU driver.
But, you are right and generally the Toshiba graphic drivers are a little bit older as the original one from GPU manufacturer.
Why? First of all the nVidia or ATI original drivers are not designed for the notebook usage. These are drivers for desktop PC graphic cards. I visited the area for mobile drivers and found a info that I have to look on the notebook manufacturer site!!! This said everything!!!!
>b) Toshiba does not seem to have followed the Nvidia spec (that or there is a major ACPI issue in their bios...)
As mentioned above the original GPU drivers are not designed for the notebook usage.
Why? Because the notebook GPUs cannot be cooled like the graphic cards for the desktop PC!!!
The Toshiba own drivers support an overheating protection which helps to avoid an GPU damage!!!!
The original nVidia or ATI drivers do not support such overheating protection!!!
If you want to use such drivers, you can do this ONLY at your own risk!
>Can I get the older BIOSes?
It seems Toshiba page provides only the newest BIOS. Maybe the authorized service provider can help you and could send you an older BIOS version.
Two years ago I contacted the ASP in my country and got a early version of my BIOS for the A50

I have a new Macbookbook, about 2 months old, and at times running video, the fans starts and does not stop. how do you get it to stop. Also i am thinking once the video is done  the fan should be slowing down and getting quiet on its own.

Your fan(s) will run at high speed (i.e., loudly) while video is playing, and you can't get around that.
If your fans are not slowing down within 2-4 minutes after CPU- and/or GPU-intensive usage ends, and the application that was showing the video is still running, Quit that application. (In fact, if you're accustomed to Windows, you may not realize that simply closing a Mac application's window does not quit the application. You still need to use the Quit command in the application-name menu. There will always be a bright dot beside or below the application icon in your Dock for each application that is open.) Quit the ones you aren't using, and see whether that allows the fans to slow down without restarting the machine. If that doesn't do the trick, reset the SMC:

After my hard drive died, I reinstalled iTunes on the new one. It counted as a new computer instalation but its the same computer. How can I have it not count as a new computer?

I have a feeling that the apps will be transferred to iTunes before they are removed from the iPhone. (This forces them to go through an authorisation check before they go back on the phone. This in turn means if you give away or sell your iPhone full of Apps, they will be removed. This in turn helps the programmers get paid adequately.)
If you have a backup of your old hard drive, you can simply drag the App files into the window of the new iTunes. They are in the Mobile Applications sub-folder of the iTunes folder.

  • Problem with BSOD/Freezing probably related to Nvidia driver on Touchsmart IQ810

I have an HP Touchsmart IQ810, now a little elderly but otherwise going strong.
For the last couple of years now I've had a problem with occasional/frequent BSODs, one or two a week. Using crash  dump analyser WhoCrashed this is almost certainly related to the driver for onboard Nvidia 9600GM video chip. The usual advice is to make sure you have the latest driver, but I've tried more recent drivers and they seem to make the problem worse - rather than BSODs, I get screen freezes at least once a day, so I've gone back to the old driver version.
I've run the hardware diagnostic tools and found no problems, I've even tried using MSI Afterburner to turn down the clock speed of the card to prevent overheating, but this makes no difference. BSODs/freezes sometimes occur not long after booting, so surely it can't be overheating.
I've pretty much had to put up with this but I would like it fixed. Any suggestions?

NVIDIA and RADEON Drivers, depending oin what they are doing can really point you in the right spot. If you are still having issues after fully removing and reinstalling the drivers then you are looking towards a Hardware issue. I would check the contact points on your motherboard and other hardware, this is looking more like an issue with your motherboard.
The biggest problems for example when it comes to computers with RADEON cards, because they are big like the NIVIDA cards; just moving your computer or bumping it can cause damage to your componets within your computer and cause issue like this. RADEONS cards are known to have screen tearing and different colored lines through the screen, another thing I would check is to make sure the swtich or voltage on you video card isn't flipped. If the switch is flipped the wrong way, if you end up forcing your card to hard with the little voltage it has running through it your computer WILL BSOD and MSI Afterburner won't even matter, usually voltage is a setting that you don't want to mess with when it comes to using that program, that is why they make switches on these cards.
If it was a driver issue, your machine won't not be BSOD. The reason why I say that is because BSOD happens to help you prevent further damage to your hardware and if the correct settings are not how they should be, something as simple as skype can cause your machine to do thing's it shouldn't. I've had many issues myself that I've gone through, being in the IT field as well I've seen this to be a common issue due to changing configurations or changing what you do on your computer.
You may of not changed anything but just a simple virus can cause programs to do what they are not meant to do.
Boot into safemode and see if you run into this issue still after running it for a few hours, with safemode as you know. You boot with the processes that you need to run the core functions of your computer. If nothing happens it is because your computer has taken a chill pill. If everything is good and you boot into your main OS then you start having this issue again then you know it IS hardware and setting's related. Little thing's like this will make a hug difference.
The switch also is verd had to find but it will be very small and colored white, if you still have the box you video card came in they should have it pointed out where it is.
I hope this helps, if you have any questions please ask.

  • Y510p and problem with Update Nvidia Driver

Hi everyonei have problem with updating my y510p lenovo laptop nvidia driver ,my current nvidia driver version is 327.62 which i download from lenovo website,Now for better performance in new games like gta v and witcher3 ,i decide to updating nvidia driver, first remove my nvidia graphic driver from add or remove then download nvidia ver 350 from nvidia official web site , which nvidia website confirm it support my graphic card which is Gt755m , then i install new ver and during install i check clean install , after successful install , restart laptop , then there was problem . when i try to open nvidia control panel it wont running and an error showed up and said "You are not currently using a display attached to an NVIDIA GPU" .i try to open a game , game running in really low fps and i find out game run on hd graphic of my laptop and my nvidia graphic wont run .The only way to repair was i install my last nvidia driver 327.62 and run a system restore .guys what is your suggestion and how i can update my y510p nvidia driver ?Thanks

    Hi Y510Man,
The video graphics installation order is important. You need to install the Intel Graphics first, and then do the Nvidia. IIRC you should un-install the Nvidia driver, then re-install (or upgrade) the Intel HD Graphics driver. Reboot, and install the new Nvidia driver.
I don't know why, but every time I upgraded my Y470 Nvidia driver, I had to use this procedure. First install, or re-install, the Intel driver, then install the Nvidia. You can't just upgrade the Nvidia driver without a re-install of the Intel. I think it has to do with the Optimus setting, and the automatic switching.
Let us know how it goes.
    Cheers

  • Confirming I have right NVidia Driver

    Hello all!
Basically I am playing World of Warcraft and having low FPS rates in raids (on low setting, 8GB of ram, 2.8ghz quad-core amd), while I know it could just be wine's fault I figured I would want to make sure I have the correct driver installed and working. I have an NVidia GTX 460. I looked at the NVidia wiki page and wasn't 100% on which one i should use. I am using dual monitors if that will make a difference. I don't believe that it's just the card not being able to handle it because I've used it with Windows(7 and 8) and had no issues with high settings (medium on some).
I am not 100% on what info you need but here is some that I think might be useful:
    # pacman -Ss nvidia
    extra/libvdpau 0.6-1 [installed]
    Nvidia VDPAU library
    extra/nvidia 313.30-2 [installed]
    NVIDIA drivers for linux

    NVIDIA drivers utilities (32-bit)
    NVidia X Server Settings:

OpenGl/GLX information - Direct Rendering: YES
    Antialiasing Settings: Use application settings
    GPU 0 - (GeForce GTX 460)
    PowerMizer: Preferred Mode - Adaptive
If there is anything in wine I should do please feel free to let me know.
    Thank you for your time.

You are using the correct driver for your (nvidia) card. I have the same card in one of my machines.
I am not a trans-gamer, but have you consulted various wiki's on the internet regarding wine + WoW???  (even Archwiki has an entry, although it appears to be out of date)...
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/World_of_Warcraft
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p … n&iId=1922  (pick whatever version you are using, read instructions / comments / etc)
off-hand are you using directx (slower) or OpenGL (faster) in Wine?
There is also rgl for Wow: http://www.aewi.info/rgl/
which apparently brings substantial FPS improvements, which you could try out too.
..anyway, to answer your question, yeah - it looks like you have the right driver.
but i would also read up on tweaks, hacks and patches for Wine/WoW and the like  - if you want the best performance / settings for the game.

  • Ultra 40 fx3500 nvidia driver problem with XP

    Hello,
I have a Sun Ultra 40 Workstation with an fx3500 graphic-card. With Solaris, Mandriva and 64Bit-Windows
the card works without problems. But with XP 32-Bit only the old 9x drivers from Nvidia work. If I try to
install a driver-release above 100 (today I tried 191.00, but I also have tried many other releases) the driver
installs fine. But after rebooting the workstation powercycles short before the Windows-Login-Screen
appears and Windows boots in "Safe-Mode". Then I can install the old 9x drivers and XP works again.
I tried a tool which wipes out the old Nvidia-driver first, bevor installing the new one, but no success.
Why is it not possible to install new Nvidia-drivers?
After the second boot when the driver has failed to load, the following messages appears on the screen
    after the Bios has finished:
    "Nvidia Rom Bios" "Detecting Arrays"
I could not read the whole text, because the message appears only a very short time, so I could not
read the message exactly. But the message only appears after the problem with the graphics card driver.
I have not configured disk-arrays. I'm not shure, but is it possible that there is something wrong with
the Nvidia-fx3500, the Nvidia-mainboard-Chipset and the Nvidia-graphics-driver above the 100. release.
    Can you please help me?
    Best Regards
    Ralf

First of all, thank you guys for your replies, and sorry if I answer you late; but I was tring to apply some of your suggestions.
    pharao:
My old card was "the stupid" (Hercules 3D Prophet 4000XT with Kyro 4000XT chipset)
    Hotoro:
What do you mean by reload Windows XP? Un/Re-Install it?! It is not a good solution for me, at least, right now. I have huge data, my settings and a lot of application installed that needs days to restore or reconfigure, and I do not think that I have that much time.
    daveg4otu (Dave):
Thank you for your help. I already removed old card drivers and registry entries, and now I also removed the new ones using "Driver Cleaner" as you suggest, but the same was the result
    Raven236:
No, my old card was not ATI. OK, I will try this new driver (56.72), but I can not keep downloading all drivers without result, can I?
    coollg:
I do not think so, because the card is working fine on the same PC on Windows 98SE. So, it is not Mainboard, AGP or compatibility problem, as I think. In other hand, you are right, I am not expecting to get the maximum performance from that card, I am, now, looking for the minimum.
Did I have to do someting else?!!!
    Thanks again.

  • New computer, new hard drive, old hard drive available

The mother board on my computer self destructed. Purchase new computer with larger hard drive, installed old hard drive as secondary drive. I had to install new copy of Itunes on new hard drive for it to work. I still have my old unusable Itunes on my old hard drive in the new computer. It seems I read here that there are certain files that can be copied to new Itunes that contains all your old information and settings putting the new copy of Itunes back like it was before problem.
We have very intelligent people here that know a lot more than I do. Does anyone know just what files I need to replace in the new Itunes so IPhone can sync safely without losing applications, music list etc.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

ANSUZ82, I understand what you you told me to do concerning the two files, Library.itl and Music Library.xml. Since I had already attempted a few things on my own before, I thought best to remove Itunes using Windows Add & Remove Programs. It looked to me that it did remove Itunes. I then downloaded another copy and installed. Before doing anything else, I ran Itunes only to discover it had the same appearance and faults as before.
I noticed there are three other Apple programs installed. Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device Support and Apple Software Update. I assume they were installed at the same time I first installed Itunes. This computer was brand new as of Feb 6. What would be the results if I removed these three Apple programs? I want to start off with a fresh copy of Itunes and all that goes with it and then put to use the advice I have received here.
I even went to the effort of activating this new computer and was told that this computer was already activated. Took steps to unactivate this computer and activate again and received the same message.
Thanks for sharing your expertise and time on my behalf.

  • Old nVidia Display Driver on Toshiba Download Driver Download

    Hello
Since a few days, theer is a new entry in the display driver download e.g. for Qosmio G30-Serie with update on 5. October 2007.
If you click the link to activate the download, the old driver is displayed (display-20070719123323.zip) an downloaded ... :-(
    Any idea?
    Kind regards
    Uwe Meyer, Germany

    Hi uwe,
In my knowledge the Toshiba graphic drivers are not the same like the original graphic drivers from the graphic card chip manufacture. (ATI, NVidia, etc..)
The Toshiba graphic card drivers are a little bit modified. The driver supports a card overheating protection.
You should know that the notebooks does not support the own strong GPU cooling modules like the desktop PCs and therefore the driver must controls the GPU performance and the temperature.
So I dont wonder that there are some driver release delays. Furthermore many Toshiba notebooks are delivered with the same graphic card so maybe you can look in other notebooks series for the newer GPU driver.
Last but not least the www.omegadrivers.net and www.laptop2go.com sites are nice sources to find the newer driver versions.
    bye

Here are instructions on replacing the hard drive in a MacBook with a removable battery. http://creativemac.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=45088
To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.bombich.com/index.html You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.
Here's a cheap SATA external hard drive case on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/HDE-SATA-Hard-Drive-Enclosure/dp/B001AAVA08/ref=pd_bxgy_pc _text_b

  • Nvidia 257.21 64bit whql driver vs old 197.75 bugs and improvments.

I am testing this new driver on my system ( CS5 on Core i7 860, 8Gb mem, Win7 64Bit Pro and nvidia GTX480.) And experiance following problems. When using "fast blur in/ out as transition i get a strange "rollo curtain effect" Blacking out the image from right to the left side!
This only occurs with the new driver 257.21 and mercury engine turn on.

Here's a nice overview that someone did about PP CS5 and various nVidia cards and drivers. Note the recent edits concerning the 257.xx series drivers. A couple of words of caution on upgrading nVidia drivers (even WHQL) when they are released. First, nVidia's consumer cards and drivers are geared towards people playing video games and most of the improvements and bug fixes are timed with the release of new game titles. nVidia has a page on it's support website to report bugs, but I suspect that very few people using Premiere are likely to take the time to submit a bug report. If you're using an  Quadro card and driver, you are far more likely to be safe in upgrading with a new WHQL driver.
Second, nVidia's driver installer package is notoriously, not very careful about removing all traces of previous drivers. Thus, sometimes, people accidently  end up with a "hybrid" driver that is a combination of the new and the old. This is major reason for BSODs, etc.. If you visit gaming hardware sites like Guru of 3D, they suggest that you, uninstall the old driver, use a utility like Driver Sweeper that cleans up remnants of the old driver in the Windows registry, reboot and then install the new driver.
Wow! Is that all worth it? My suggestion (like Harm's) is if you're not having problems with the present video driver, don't install a new driver, just to see what might happen. I'm presently running 257.21 with a GTX 275 and I haven't seen any problems with CS5, but that's just my limited experience. The 257.xx drivers actually corrected an OpenGL problem in Magic Bullet Looks. I suspect that was just by coincidence, since a number of video games also use OpenGL.

  • Satellite P100-240 - Doesn't boot properly

I'm posting on behalf of a friend who has this problem, we only have contact via mobile texts :( I may not be able to immediately provide all the answers you seek to resolve this problem.
    Hi,
    The laptop (P100-240) turned itself off whilst playing a game 2 days ago, since then the following problems have been experianced;
Loading windows in normal mode results in instant Blue Screen (specific info unavilable). Windows in normal mode has not been accessed since this problem began.
Loading windows in safe mode worked for a while, but internet access resulted in Blue Screen aswell, for a while this problem resolved itself, safe mode no longer works to my knowledge.
The visual display appears at all times distorted, a matrix like effect. I don't know wether this effect is passive, or only during windows or startup, details on how it looks or anything very specific.
A blue screen mentioned the file nv4_mini.sys, this is an nvidia driver file for laptops as far as I know. A gfx driver update cured nothing.
The current situation is total lack of access to the desktop, I think it blue screens just after the welcome screen. I don't know what the blue screen says atm, but the disabling of memory options in the bios was recommended by something... I don't know wether the option is even available to the p100-240s bios system, googling this problem came up with mentions of disabling video caching and shadowing options in the bios as the definition of bios memory options, and that these options don't always exist.
However, my diagnosis is that the video card is just fried :( which would be a worse problem than a software or options problem as far as a quick and simple solution is concerned.
Any solutions, advice or questions? I'm struggling to find and give useful advice, and learning the situation in detail is tricky aswell.
So far a registry clean has been done, an anti-virus scan has been done, a system restore has been done, a video card driver update has been done and a bios update has been done. In that order, for what relevance that has.
    Help? :\
I've seen similar problems on the internet, but only once was it a near-identical problem with the same model of laptop.

The Nvidia GeForce Go 7600 is a separate card that attaches to the bottom of the motherboard on the top left side.
The card itself has a fan/heat sink unit attached to it and measures about 3x5 inches. I have become intimately familiar with this card and the P100 in the apst few days.
Laptop worked until one day the screen went blank. Not dark black blank when its off, but rather when the backlight is on but no immage is available. The laptop starts in safe mode and also in the VGA mode. The problem can be seens even before windows starts up. There are vertical lines across the screen, they either distort color on the image (as in the toshiba welcome screen) or plainly black out letters as in the widnows start-up selection screen. Sometimes restarting after VGA mode removes these lines and system starts up normaly. Then once booted the screen goes blank either right away or in 5/10/20 minutes. I have replaced the video card and the system board to no avail.
I think I will try replacing the screen power inverter next, will see if it will help.
    My unut is P100, PSPA3U-04501T
    the screen is 1680x1050
GPU is GEForce Go 7600, 256 mb
