P105-S9337 Problems - BIOS?

Aloha, I have a friend who has a P105-S9337 that came preinstalled with Vista Home. He came to me after he installed some softwares noticing that it didn't work as fast as it should. I've taken a quick look and discovered that it had automatic updates turned off for the entire 3 years he had it (he bought it new) so it had only 1 update done, 3 years ago. Also turned off was the firewall AND he had no antimalware running either. Needless to say, I found malwares by the many hundreds (nearly a thousand).
After spending nearly 2 weeks cleaning it up (the first 5 days just learning Vista, I'm an XP guy), I finally got it up to the point where it's working half decently and fairly well protected (caught up on the updates, turned on firewall, installed Kapersky antivirus, scanned and scrubbed with kapersky, SuperAntiSpyware, ccleaner and several microsoft anti-malware tools). Unfortunately, he panicked after hearing me grumble about Vista that he went out and had Windows 7 installed by his brother without telling me. In the process of installing 7, the brother erased the recovery partition in which the vista and P105 installation files was kept. Turned out AFTER the fact, that 7 had even more compatibility issues with the softwares my friend wanted on the laptop. To say nothing of fact that half of the hardware didn't have any drivers installed. He turned to me to fix this problem.  After lecturing him about jumping into the fire without checking first, I tried to find the drivers needed to make the laptop work.
After spending over 2 weeks of banging head against the proverbial brick wall, I gave up and decided to install XP onto the thing, figuring it could'nt be worse off trying this. After all, I've had fair success in past with backdating other pcs to XP, the only difference is that the P105 was the newest machine I've attempted to backdate. I've downloaded all the drivers and files i could find on Toshiba Europe's website, including an instruction listing the install order. The mistake I made was not checking on the version number of the BIOS 'update' before flashing the BIOS. Turned out I put in the wrong one, v3.3 instead of v4.7. After I did the BIOS and then installed a version of the Software Update Package, the whole laptop froze. Literally. The ONLY thing that was semi-functional was the mouse, i could move it but couldnt click or drag anything. Even the on-off switch didn't do anything. Was forced to pull plug on the ac adapter and pull the battery.
My problem now is that the laptop will only turn on the lights behind the speakers and the indicator lights for the ac adapter, power on, and harddrive. The screen remains blank and nothing else happens. Oh yeah, I can hear and feel the harddrive and or optical drive spin up (don't know whether they stay running tho). Holding the power switch turns off the speaker lights and eventually the hard drive and power indicators turns off too. Of course the AC and battery light stays on (ac adapter still plugged in). I think I messed up the BIOS and in so doing this locked myself out of the laptop.
My question is this: What can I do to fix this mess? I suspect my only option is to take the P105 to an authorized toshiba tech and have him/her reflash the BIOS directly. But before I do that I figure it would'nt hurt to embarass myself and ask you guys whether you have any suggestions before giving the money to the tech. At worse, I'd have to deal with you guys telling me how dumb I am. At best, maybe someone could suggest an option that would fix this laptop with minimal fuss. Thanks in Advance (and I beg your patience in reading my lengthy post).

PS:  I've since found out that my friend only has an UPGRADE cd for Vista which would be useless in this case, so I've bitten the bullet and have went out and bought an unused copy of Vista Ultimate.  I intend to return the P105 back to Vista as that's the only thing that has proven to work on this thing.  I just wanna restore the thing back to Vista and rid myself of this headache.

Best to order the discs from Toshiba. All the drivers and so forth are preinstalled and Windows is preactivated. Save yourself still more headaches.

For some strange reason, I am only getting sound on certain things, like windows start up and shutdown chimes. I recently restored the machine using the vista discs from Toshiba. Media player will not make any music either, nor will playing a dvd. No issues in control panel that are showing up. No viruses or spyware, did sweeps for both. could a windows update suddenly cause a problem, even if no updates were done? Unless 1 snuck by when I wasnt looking somehow. I am going to try to resinstall the sound drivers, and see if there are any updates here, but wanted to know if anyone had any ideas? I was also having this issue before the system wipe. thanks for any advise. Joe Vista home premium IE7 4g ram, spysweeper and zonealarm sec suite running.

If this still occurs just after restoring the hard drive's contents to factory fresh and before installing anything or even going on line, then you should expect a hardware problem.
    It's the gold-standard test.

  • Satellite P105-S9337 will not start

I just had a customer bring in a Satellite P105-S9337 laptop. She said that at one point she did a system restore and then someone called her and they did something in her system - details are pretty sketchy there. Anyway, when I got it, I tried to boot it up, there are no beep codes; there is no flicker of video. I have tried to boot with the hard drive in; hard drive out; with a boot CD, without; reseated the memory modules; put a different hard drive in but still no video. I even tried hooking it to an external display - no video. I know in a desktop, I would look at the video card and/or mother board - any other thoughts on this?? Thanks.

Just try a system reset and see if that makes any difference. Power off the computer, unplug the AC from laptop, remove battery, press and hold down the power button for 30 seconds, replace battery and AC, power on, if/when you see the Toshiba logo press the 'F2' key to enter BIOS Setup, in setup press 'F9' to load setup defaults, press 'F10' to save and exit, and try to reboot into Windows.
Please let us know if it makes any difference. Good luck.

  • P105-S9337 Backlight

    Hi,
I just bought a refurbished P105-S9337. It came with XP Pro. Everything works fine except for the Fn buttons which adjust the brightness. An indicator appears on screen to show how bright it should be but the actual brightness doesn't change. The person I bought it from says it is often a problem for people hwo install XP since the laptop originally had Vista.
Is there any way to get the buttons working in XP?
Will installing Windows 7 likely fix the problem?

They don't know what they are talking about.  The problem is a lot of people don't know how to find all of the XP drivers and then either don't install them in the correct order or don't install all of them.  While the USA Support Site does not have all of the XP drivers and utilities for that model, the European Support Site does.  Download all of them and install them according to the following.
    --------------------8<------------------- <snip> ------------------
Install your drivers in this order.
Restart after each driver and take the time to test between drivers.
Some will apply and some won't.
The names are generic and may not match the names on the files exactly.  You'll need to use your best judgment to determine which ones to install.
    Chipset software
    Display driver
    Sound driver
    Modem Driver
If your machine has the internal WiFi card, then install the WLAN and/or WiFi driver
ACPI Common Modules (required for Power management tools to function)

    Display Hotkey utility
    Touchpad Driver
    Touchpad enable/disable utility
    Toshiba Network Device Switch utility
    Toshiba Power Saver Utility

  • P105-S9337 Wrong Machine during recovery

Hello, So I have encountered the ever so common wrong machine message when trying to restore my computer. I understand it has something to do with the DMI in the BIOS or something. I found that Toshiba had a utility to fix this but my model is included in the list of effected computers, but tried to do it anyway. I burned the iso as the instructions say to do using Power ISO and it is indeed a boot cd. I was able to boot from cd but it just comes up and says loading windows 95 in text and then theres a blinking _ a few lines down. It does nothing I left if for an hour. What can I do? I am limited in options being deployed out here in Afghanistan in the middle of nowhere I have nothing but this laptop for another 6 months, any help is greatly appreciated. My System is on bios 4.30, windows vista 32 bit. Thanks! Pat

You will need to contact Toshiba's tech support to obtain the DMI-string update utility for that model.

    msi k9ngm-l (V3.7b1 bios)
    amd 64 x2 5600+ (2.9ghz)
4 gb ram (though i see only 3 because of xp)
    radeon hd 4850 512mb
for about 2 weeks im having wierd bsod during gamming but usualy its when i quit a game, before it gets back to desktop it will bsod. when i get the bsod it says the cause is FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA and related to ati2cqag.dll
ive updated my graphic card driver, didnt help, downgraded version of driver, didnt help, i must point that one of the "uninstall" drivers went wrong and gave me some trouble but ive cleared all the files, registry keys and installed again new drivers. the bsod didnt stop. ive then tan memtest for 4 hours, no faulty ram according to it. i can play fine, no drop in frames its normal, its just crashes randomly.ive stressed the gpu and its fine. ive searched for answers but cant find the problem. any help would be great. thanks in advance

    Do memory check with >>Memtest86<<
List PSU brand with details, look over PSU sticker.
    "amd 64 x2 5600+ (2.9ghz)
    4 gb ram"
    That's 2 or 4 memory sticks?

  • Problemas Bios Boot Z5070

Hola.
    EFI network 0 for IPv4 (68-F7-28-05-70-E0)
    EFI network 0 for IPv6 (68-F7-28-05-70-E0)
Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed
Insert Recovery Media and hit any key
Then select Boot Manager to choose a new Boot device or to Boot Recovery Media

  • AES Instructions (encryption)/VT-d (Hyper-V) & Peripheral Power problem (BIOS)

    Hello
I've just purchased a Z86A-G65 G3 motherboard with a i7 2600 CPU. Both parts is supposed to support VT-d for Virtualization and AES hardware acceleration for encryption.
I installed Win 2008 R2 SP1, and set up my Raids with AES encryption. AES instruction set was enabled. Truecrypt detected the support. Then I installed Hyper-V and a guest OS with a Domain controller. Added the Host machine to the domain, and now Truecrypt does not use the AES instruction set. It can not see that the CPU/motherboard supports this.
So, my question is: Is there something preventing me from running both VT-d and AES instruction set at the same time? It's the only thing I can really think of.
My second problem is that I can no longer get into BIOS! And therefor can not check the AES instruction settings or Hyper-V settings, to test tings. The power for my PS2 and USB keyboards is turned on a few seconds to late, so I can only interact with the Marvel SATA bios and beyond. Not the POST. I've tried several keyboards (5) and it's the same with them all. A couple of seconds to late to power on. I was able to enter BIOS earlier when I first installed the hardware, no it's impossible. Only thing I remember I might have done, is to remove the startup Picture/Logo. I've cleared the BIOS, but the situation is the same. The power comes exactly to late.
    What are my options?

    Quote
After 2 hours of cursing, I found a solution though:
    - Remove battery from MB, keep it away till the power is completely drained. Shortcut the pins under the battery position for a faster drain.
    - Place the battery in the battery holder again, but do NOT push it down in it's place. Only make it have contact with the metal, to be able to power up the MB.
    - The power button on the MB will light up when you got connection. After you have powered up the MB, remove the battery IMMEDIATELY.
Before the OS boots, you'll be presented with a few CPU and RAM details. Under this details, you'll be presented with the BEAUTIFUL message: "Press F1 to enter setup". Tada!
This have been a real struggle. One star less to MSI for this one.
What you did was a thorough CMOS Clear.  That also means that when you did this:
    Quote
    I've cleared the BIOS
Something did not go as expected.  The whole point of a CMOS Clear is to make the system completely powerless.  Was your PSU connected to A/C power when you originally cleared CMOS?  It needs to be disconnected and the power-on button has to be pressed a couple of times (to drain capacitors) before the CMOS-Clear Button at the back panel should be pressed for a couple of seconds.  This procedure should always yield this:
    Quote
    "Press F1 to enter setup"
If that did not happen when you cleared CMOS before, then there was either still power in the circuits when you pressed the button, or the Clear CMOS Button is defective.

  • MOVED: K9A Platinum Vista install problem - BIOS not ACPI compatible

This topic has been moved to Vista problems.
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=109600.0

I have been having very similar issues with this board ever since they updated the MSI drivers in April.  MSI says it cant be a driver/MoBo issue cause everyone would be calling in about it.
I think they are completely wrong and have a driver package that isn't working correctly...but thats just my opinion.
Anyway, have you tried installing in RAID 1?
This did not change the final outcome for me and I am stuck to Native IDE till I can pay for the shipping to have my board replaced.  I spent way to long on the phone with agents blaming everything but the board (probably some new MSI policy cause they have never tried to pass this crap off on me b4), so I have tested everything else and still have dire issues when ever I am using a RAID set-up.
Question 2:  What PSU are you running?
Make sure you are not overworking your PSU, as from what MSI told me, this can cause numerous errors and set-up issues.
Well, I hope some of this helped.  Maybe it is a driver issue and just not enough people with this board have had to re-install since the new RAID driver was put up in April.  Again, I never had problem one before then!!!  Other than just basic help that is.

I am trying to figure out how to remove the backcover on my Toshiba laptop.  I have removed all the screws from the top and the side I can think off, but it seems like something in the middle is preventing me form pulling it apart.  I am trying to look at my fan since it goes off every 2 minutes.

  • K8D Master-F 9131 problem with BIOS 1.2 and Raidcore BC4852

The board does not start the Raidcore BIOS with motherboard 9131 BIOS 1.2 installed. It works OK wih BIOS 1.1.
Raidcore 4852 FW is V130. (tested V110 = same problem)
    Bios found here:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/download/dld/spt_dld_detail.php?UID=441&kind=3
Both 1.1 and 1.2 BIOS was unable to recognise my Opteron 242 CPU steppings which indicate they are both quite old. Maybe MSI could fix these problems and include the newer CPU steppings like the ones for 250 CPUs. Bios 1.2 is dated nov. 28th 03 which is a year old. BUHU.
I am building a LARGE storage server based on this motherboard. Several others to come (planning on using the MSI K8D Master 3 -133 9161), but if MSI does not upgrade the BIOS for their high end boards I will start looking for another supplier real fast.
    Sincerely
    ArildS
    Norwegian Central Securities Depository

I'll stick with the V1.10, but I'd fell better if MSI showed me they actively update their systems by releasing updated BIOS files from time to time.
I can't sell a 15000$ storage system that doesn't recognise the CPUs installed. The customer would laugh and tell me to come back with a supported system.
Isn't this a VERY valid reason for wanting updates? Even if it only is an updated CPU list?
The only reason I tried this MSI board is that it was the only one available with my retailer at the time I bought it with 3 PCI-X 100Mhz slots. Maybe I should go with a Tyan Thunder next time. Tyan at least show some activity.

  • Big fan noise problem: the rear fan won't shut off, the BIOS won't update, systemupdate locks up

I received new ThinkStaion (oh boy, lots of memory and CPU speed, yay!)
I unfortunately left the originally installed Vista OS on there.  Very much regretting that as I believe it contributes to the following problems (BIOS).
So the original problem was that after just a month of using my new ThinkStation, the System Board died, and it had to be replaced. Honestly, all I did was choose the sleep or hibernate option in Vista to shut down.  Afterwards, poof! didn't even get the proper Power lights on the system.  I diagnosed this with the online docs and then sat for a few hours on our tech support line doing all the same things to re-diagnose it.
So after the replacement, the rear fan will not shut off. Jet engine noise all day. I went into the system settings and selected "Quiet" for the Fan settings but that did not help.
Research on this forum resulted in the possibility of a BIOS update fixing the problem.  Comparison to my co-workers systems which arrived at the same time shows this BIOS is woefully out of date, so even if it does not fix the fan issue I want to update it.  However, everything I've tried to do is failing for one reason or another.
(The fan issue does need resolution since in one week I will end up sharing an office (first time in many years, thanks IBM for nothing!) so since I don't want us both to have to wear noise cancelling headsets, I'd like to fix this without having to just pull the @#$@ power to the fan. Grrrr. )
I downloaded what I felt were the appropriate Lenovo apps to update both the BIOS and the serial number but none seem to work properly from the command line in Vista.  One of the two (can't recall which) asks me to reboot and it never actually shuts down. Eternal "Shutting Down" message. Ga!  The other throws some gosh awful

Then I decided Vista might be the problem and found sites recommending flashing the BIOS from a bootable USB.  So I started down that path and after burning the wrong version, finally geting the AIK Vista tools installed and to the point of trying to make the USB bootable, it won't allow me to put the OS boot on it.  Ah, for the days when a simple "sys a:" took care of that.
So, after reformatting the USB and pounding my head in the wall, keyboard, etc. I am at my wit's end.  What to do.  I just want the fan noise to go away.
This does seem to duplicate other forum messages but I can't get anywhere on this.  Help!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

FYI to all the helpful folks here (and any looking to shut their jet engine off as well): Flashing the BIOS did the trick.
First I had to find a website with DOS OS files and put those on the USB instead of Vista.  Oldie but a goodie, but at least it booted! No other versions would.
I had been intending to use the WinPhlash utility that Lenovo supplied with the BIOS update but since I was booting from DOS that was useless. However, I found a DOS version of it and used that instead. Boom baby!  Flashed and rebooted.
It did take two boots to get it back to normal (first one gave very alarming messages about no operating system being found but I think it was just a remnant of the reboot that was triggered from the DOS session).  A second boot returned life to normal and blissful silence from the server.  And I was finally able to get the model and serial number back in there to get rid of the bootup message it throws for that too.
    Ahhhhhhh.
Thanks to all for the hints - I believe I had gotten the idea of flashing the BIOS to solve this from some other thread I found here.  This is a very nice forum to have bookmarked.

  • Z77A-GD65 Cannot boot from Bios A

    Hi,
I was fine for years until about two weeks ago, when PC sometimes didn't boot up (no VGA signal, keyboard dead). I fixed the situation by trying to turn it on/off again few times and then it worked. Few days it was OK, and then it happened again. Fixed by the same way. Today, it happened again and I wasn't able to fix it.
I checked LED error code and it was cycling about 5 codes like 49,55,4F, .. (see the attachment). I tried to check/remove all components with no success. I also tried CMOS clearing (connect pins, battery out), but still nothing.
At the end, I tried to switch to Bios B and PC booted without any problem. I updated Bios B to the latest version and now I am fine. It also looks that problem is fixed.
But what is wrong with Bios A? I want to fix it and use it, but I don't know how. I tried to update the bios with Msi forum hq usb flashing tool (booted from Bios B and then switched to Bios A before flashing), but it is still dead.
Thanks a lot for your help.

I also had some sort of same problem (Bios A not booting, bios B OK)
BUT remember one thing: that bios switch is not really hardware. To really switch between bioses you must unplug power cord, wait for capacitor to discharge and then flip the switch.
So the sollution for you  (that worked for me twice) is: clear CMOS (search forum for detailed method). Switch to BIOS B, Make bootable USB with BIOS version 10.5 (A5) (because this version REALLY works with option to flash the other BIOS). Update (or just downgrade to BIOS 10.5) and then clear CMOS with powercord out and battery out. Boot from bios B and within bios flash BIOS A from BIOS B. You will have same version on both Bioses. After that switch to BIOS A (again after clear CMOS etc...) and now you just can upgrade to which bios version you want using the USB bootable stick.
I now have BIOS A with version 10.11 (AB) and BIOS B with 10.5 (A5) just to restore BIOS A in case of failure.
First time when I did this was because mobo failed to boot and can't save OC profiles. Second time was (probably) because of many OC testing.

  • GX623 Windows 7 boot problem

Hi guys, i recently have to reinstall OS on my laptop, and now i am facing "really long boot" problem, all drivers are correctly installed (at least i think so), i am fighting with this problem hole day, so i am pretty mad and tired right now, hope you can give me some advice
here is a boot trace picture hope it can share some light on this
i already reinstalled windows seven 3 times today, i tried to update bios to the latest version, even re-flash EC, all with no change :(
to describe this problem, bios post goes OK, no errors, all fast and smooth, as soon i see windows logo animating on my screen my HDD "stops" working (there is no hdd activity for a long period of time) well that can be seen on trace, and then after 90 seconds (at least trace shows that) it starts booting like before, system loads, and everything is working as it should
