P205-6267 - WiFi mysteriously shuts off - Win 8.1 32-bit

I resurrected an old Satellite laptop my daughter was using for a long time as a 'desktop.' Monitor wasn't working. Once I got her a desktop PC, I managed to repair the display, install a new hard drive and install Win 8.1 32-bit on it.
It has been working well for a few months (wicked fast with Verizon FIOS - 35mbps!) but now I'm having a mysterious problem with the internal WiFi adapter mysteriously shutting off for no apparent reason. Sometimes the troubleshooter can turn it back on, sometimes not and I have to reboot. Lately even rebooting doesn't help - it comes up turned off.
I recently had an overheating problem, solved with an air cleaner spray can. I worry the overheating may have damaged something.
I don't know if the adapter is going bad or if it's a Win 8.1 compatibility issue. I could go back to Win 7 32 bit if necessary, but I'd prefer to fix this first, if possible.
Details:
P205-6267
Windows 8.1 32-bit
3GB RAM
Network Adapters:
  Intel(r) Wireless WifFi Link 4965AGN
  Driver Date 10/7/2010 Version 13.4.0.139
Digital Signer Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Layer
"Update Driver" says the best dirver is already installed.
Device Manager says "The Device is working properly."
I don't mind downgrading to Win7 but I don't want to do all that only to find it's a hardware problem. Any install I do will be a clean install - I don't have or want the Toshiba disks.
Does anyone have any suggestions or thoughts regarding:
Running Win 8.1 on a p205
Troubleshooting a possible hardware failure on the WiFi adapter
Buying / Installing a replacement WiFi unit if it IS a hardware failure
Upgrading the CPU to run 64-bit Windows (that last is extra)
Thanks in advance...
Barry

Just to let everyone know, I downgraded to Windows 7 32-bit and everything seems stable and fine. My guess is there was some incompatibility or insufficiency in the WiFi driver that made it unreliable in Windows 8.

  • TS1702 I DON'T HAVE A WARRANTY AND MY IPAD IS TWO YEARS OLD.  My ipad 2 wifi-3g keeps shutting off, is there anything I can do to fix it?

I have never drop my Ipad 2 nor wet it.  Just recently while search on siri, ipad kept going back to home page.  Wondering if I can reset ipad or do anything to fix this problem

Basic troubleshooting , try each one in turn to see if they sort
    1. Reset then
    2. restore with back up and if required
    3. restore as new
which should eliminate any software issues

  • Running 9.0.1 Firefox. I get a msg from AVG that Firefox is using too much memory and then the computer (not just Firefox) shuts off. Running Win7 (64-bit) with 4 GB Mem and Intel i-5. Only 4-5 "normal" windows are open at the time this happens.

Right now Task manager Performance tab on Memory says: Total 3958; Cached mem 1588; Avail 2239; Free 722; Physical Mem 43% and this window is the only thing open. Kernel mem (MB) says Paged 179 and Nonpaged 80.
I can get you more info if you tell me what you need (and where to find it - I am 60 y.o. woman and this is not my forte :=)
    Thanks,

If you want to reduce memory(60%) '''when firefox minimize[only in windows os] '''there is an easy old good trick:
type in the address bar '''about:config'''
then press the button '''i'll be careful i promise'''
then '''right-click''' anywhere in the list of preferences and choose '''new''' > '''boolean'''
then type in the open window '''config.trim_on_minimize'''
then click''' OK''', and in the next window select '''TRUE''' and click '''OK'''.
    exit firefox and restart-it.
    '''works only in windows os'''

    Hello!
When there is unauthorized modifications on the iPhone Apple doesnt replace the product. Unfortunately you will need to get a new iPhone!
If you could have contacted Apple when you broke your screen you would be eligible to get a replacement after paying the Out of Warranty service fee.
    All the best!

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

If you have followed the standard Apple troubleshooting processes (see user guide )
probably a trip to the local Apple Store Genius bar is called for before warranty runs out
Assuming the iPad has been released in your Country if not you may have to take it to a

  • I have the iPhone4. It wont stay on unless it's plugged into the charger. When on the charger it doesn't get service or connect to wifi. Sometimes, even on the charager it shuts off. Note: It's always on 100% to 90%. How do I fix this?

As stated. I have the iPhone4, I've had it personally for a year now. It's a hand-me-down phone from my uncle who had for for at least two years. For an old phone it worked perfectly. The ocassional hang up on the caller when I try to lock it, but overall it worked perfectly.
Now, it started to glitch out a lot. From not letting me unlock my phone for the few minutes, to now shutting off on on regardless of where it's at. I started noticing that my phone would shut itself off, even at 40% when I'm at work. To fix it I would have to find a charger, plug it in for a few moments and it would turn back on. I would be cautious not to put it upsidedown otherwise it'd shut off again.
As of last night, ((9/18/13 )) My phone turned off. I've already gone through the charade numerous times. So I put it on my charger but this time when my phone turned on I didn' have service and it didnt get wifi. Even the red buttons/notifications on my phone were there but didn't read any numbers. Obvioulsy I couldn't make calls or even send a text messages. Sometimes when it turns on I can't even use my apps. Even when fully charged, the moment the chargers is slightly out my phone shuts off as if it died
Now, my phone even on the charger shuts on and off. I'm unable to use apps. I get no service or wifi.
Is this fixable? Or has my phone had it's last Hoorah?

it sure sounds like the battery is defect

  • Can you shut off the Internet on a iPhone 4s and still use it with a wifi connection ?

Can you shut off the Internet on a iPhone 4 and then use the phone as normal

I assume that you're asking if you can shut off cellular data (as no individual can shut off the Internet! )? Yes, you can turn off cellular data and use the phone features (except for MMS which requires cellular data) and access the Interenet via WiFi.

  • Since Win 8.1 update Satellite C855-2HW shuts off

    Greetings,
Well, June 2013 I bought my Satellite C855-2HW with Windows 8 as operating system.
The notebook worked smooth until in December 2013 I got Windows 8.1 updates.
Since then every day (sometimes several times a day) the notebook shuts off, the Automatic Recovery feature of Windows is initiated and the message 'Windows couldn't be started as it should, a system recovery is necessary.' pops up.
I've got this problem now for four weeks now and every time I have to install some software since the system is set to a previous recovery point.
I hope someone can help me get rid of this problem.
    My sincere thanks in advance.
    Stefan

    Hi
It would be interesting to know how you installed / upgraded to Win 8.1 system.
Did you follow the Toshiba step by step instruction in order to update the Win 8.1 properly?
    I mean this instruction:
    http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/generic/windows8_1-upgrade-stepbystep/
I did it with my Toshiba notebook and I must say: no problems until now
Additionally you should not forget to install/update the Win 8.1 drivers provided by Toshiba
On Toshiba EU driver page (Win 8.1 update) you will find the installation instruction for Win 8.1 drivers. It shows you the drivers and tools which need to be removed, updated or installed again.
Im sure the notebook would run properly in case the Win 8.1 update would be done properly.

  • HT201263 i forgot my passcode and can't use the normal recovery methods because i can't shut off find my i phone as i don't have wifi turned on to wipe it with i cloud and when i do a recovery mode it simply locks back up.

find my i phone is turned on and my wifi is shut off so i cant wipe it with icloud.
when i do recovery mode it just locks back up.

If you have forgotten the passcode for the lock screen, connect in recovery mode and restore, you'll get the option to set up a new code during this process. Check this article about it:
iOS: Forgotten passcode or device disabled after entering wrong passcode
You can access "Find my iPhone" on your computer by logging in on iCloud.

  • Ipad keeps  coming on and  online, even though I have it shut off and  wifi shut off, why is this and how can I stop it?  After shutting it off,  sometimes   10 minutes,  or hours later it comes back on, even when not using it

When my Ipad has been disconnected from wifi and  shut off, it keeps  coming back on and online.  It can happen in 10 minutes, or hours later,  happens  irregulary.  Have noticed when it happens, I get nofications  from facebook of  comments and or posts..  I can switch the wifi off,    switch the iPad off and  then set it beside me,  hour later it dings, i have  noficiations of  face book things, and its online again.. why is this and how can I stop it from happening?

Yes, I went to settings and turned wifi off.  Thought at first I wasnt letting it set for a sec or two before shutting the iPad off.  so now I wait like a minute or two  before shutting the iPad down.  didnt  seem to help.  Tried  actually logging out of  facebook when I was  done with it,  worked for about  4 days, and now it has started  coming on and coming online again,,  I  went through my notifications and  shut things off,   Well  see if it works.  thank you.

  • Can I shut off wifi to prevent my ipod touch music library from being tampered with?

I switched to a different media source but once more my CD music disappeared. But instead of being corrupted this time it was converted to other. It was fixed by just pulling up the music app list and unchecking/checking the songs again thankfully though.. But if I shut off my wi-fi on my ipod will this prevent my cd music on my touch from being messed with?
I already got off the phone with a rep two days ago and they scratched their heads as to what's even causing this. We did everything known to fix it, and after looking at the numerous threads now its obvious it isn't just a hardware issue. Everyone is having issues with their cd music. I'd rather just have this nightmare end by any means possible.

I doubt wifi has anything to do with  unless yo have the iPod and iTunes setup to sync via wifi.
To turn wifi off place the iPod in airplane mode.
