P30: External HD isn't detected when using IEEE 1394 cable

My P30 won't/ can't detect my newly aquired Western Digitak Extreme Lighted Drive 320GB when I connect it via the firewire port. I use a 6 pin to 4 pin cable (which cost a fortune, by the way) that is supposed to be a way to connect this drive to a pc.
My ieee 1394 driver seems to be called "VIA OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 host controller".
Can anyone tell me what to do? I really need to connect this drive by firewire because I need the USBs for other devices.

This may sound like an obvious problem, but is the drive:
1. Set to Master on the jumpers?
2. Formatted?
If the drive is not set to master, the computer will not recognise it using 1394. And if it is set to master, but it has not yet been formatted, the computer will register that something using 1394 is connected, but will not know what to do. To format you right click on My Computer, and select manage.

Must use IEEE 1394?

I'm looking at purchasing a Panasonic HDC-SD90K hi def camcorder. It does not have an IEEE 1394 connector; it has a USB 2 connector. In reading the online material for Premiere Elements 10, I came across the following:
"HDV camcorder: Connect your HDV camcorder to your computer’s IEEE 1394 port using an IEEE 1394 cable. You cannot capture HDV using USB ports."
Does this mean I cannot buy this camcorder, or I cannot use Premier Elements 10?
(My iMac has IEEE1394 "Firewire" ports and USB 2 ports.)

By the way, this camcorder shoots in 1920x1080 at 60p by default -- which is not supported by this program and, if you try to edit it in this program, you'll likely have lots of issues.
If you plan to edit your video in Premiere Elements, but sure to shoot in 1080 60i only.
And, when you start up your Premiere Elements project, be sure to select the settings for Full AVCHD 1920x1080 5.1 audio.

ISight not detected when using VMWare

When I'm booting with my Windows partition using Boot Camp, iSight works find. But when I use Windows via VMWare Fusion, iSight isn't detected.
How can I fix this?

Go to "settings" and enable it.
It's weird that VMWare doesn't have that enabled by default O_o

Using smart previews on iMac to control two sets of identical original files on two external drives --- render previews setting when using smart previews

I’m just getting started with Lightroom and if someone can help me I’ll be very appreciative.
I’m using an iMac with a 1TB drive and two external 2.5 TB drives for backup. My active files are on all three drives and I’m running out of room on the iMac drive.
With the smart previews capability of Lightroom 5, I’m hoping to remove all the active files from the iMac drive. I hope to import existing images into the LR catalog from two identical drives with identical folders and have both sets of images reflect the changes I make using smart previews on my iMac.
I just created two identical test folders of junk images on the external drives and was following a beginners tutorial on importing. However, I see nothing about using smart previews on my iMac that, when connected, will update more than one external drive at the same time.
I’m also wondering if, when using smart previews, it matters how I set the render previews during the import process.

I don't see any way to use smart previews to update both external drives at the same time. The smart previews are linked to a specific set of images. But it seems to me that if both drives are in fact identical, once the catalog is updated when one of those drives is connected those changes should also apply to the files on the other drive. It's actually the catalog that gets updated, not the images. Smart previews and regular import previews are completely unrelated. How you have your import previews configured will have no effect on your smart previews.
Incidentally, in order for my suggestion to work it would be necessary to only have one of those external drives connected. And when the other EHD is connected it would have to have the same drive letter or name. In other words it would have to appear to the iMac that it is precisely the same drive.

Inland external usp mouse malfunctioning when used with HP Pavilion dv6-2155dx laptop.

I have a external usb mouse I have been using with my HP laptop for over two years now and it has always worked without a problem. This week it suddenly stopped working properly. Often it does not work when I click on it even after several tries. Due to disability with hands it is too hard to use the pointer on the pad on my laptop. I need to use a mouse.
I am not sure if it is a bug from a recent software update or an issue with my snyaptics program (which is what I suspect). I am older and my computer knowledge is not so good anymore.
What can I do to diagnose to see where the problem is. I cannot afford to take my laptop in for service right now.

Thank you for your post, I will do my best to assist you.
I understand that your mouse is not working properly. Here is a document onTroubleshooting Mouse Problems (Windows 7, Vista, XP). Have you tried a different usb mouse? Have you tried it in a different USB port?
It is not the synaptics program as that has to do with Touchpads, not the mouse. If you believe it was an update, you may be able to do a system restore back to when it was working correctly. You could try running MS Fix It to help resolve issues and look for updates. You should also run the HP Support Assistant to aid with updates and resolve issues. Please let me know how it turns out.

Time Machine fails to backup HD and stalls computer when backing up to external HD (Western Digital WD5000MT) when using Firewire 800 but works fine using USB

I have a mid 2012 MBP (MacbookPro9,1) running Mountain Lion 10.8.2. When I start a Time Machine backup to an external Western Digital HD (WD5000MT) connected using a Firewire 800 cable, my open programs stop responding and in general my computer freezes up not allowing me to open activity monitor or the console utility. I can't even shut down or restart my computer and must hard boot to reset. Though removing the firewire cable that goes to the external HD can sometimes get my system working again. However, the WD external HD also has a usb port and when I connect it to my computer via a USB cable, Time Machine seems to backup my system fine without stalling my computer. This same external HD worked fine with Firewire 800 using my old late 2007 MBP running snow leopard. I should note that my brother has the exact same model WD external HD and he also had issues with the firewire port on his MBP running mountain lion. I have run the disk utility checking for disk/file permission errors and the drive itself seems fine. I initially formatted that drive as ExFAT but while troubleshooting reformatted to HFS+ and still had the same issue. I tested using a different firewire 800 cable but still had the same issue. Can't think of anything else to do. I don't have another firewire-compatible device to test if it is the HD vs the firewire port. I would prefer to use the firewire port for quicker transfer speeds but I'm stuck with USB for now. Any suggestions?

Echo detected when using skype software - can anyone help?

Hi, can anyone help?
I've detected an echo when using skype software. This occurs through the computer of the person I'm speaking to, so that when they speak, an echo comes back to them half a second later. I'm wondering if the speakers and microphone on my laptop are located too close together and the microphone is retransmitting sound from the speakers? My laptop is an HP mini 110.
Is there anything I can alter through my audio settings to stop this happening?

I have a Mini 110 that performs beautifully with Skype (no echo, etc). I have two other HP systems that don't do anywhere near as well. I did tweak the graphics card on mine, which tremendously improved the video. However...we are talking sound here, so I'll list the settings on my 110 for you to compare to yours:
I'm sure you already know how to find the settings, but...in Skype, do Tools>Audio Settings
Microphone: set at about 45% with Automatically adjust microphone settings checked
Speakers: set at about 75% with Automatically adjust speaker settings checked

The Mini DisplayPort to HDMI doesn't carry audio unless you have the Mid 2010 model 7,1 and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI.
With the Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody there is an adapter that uses the Mini DisplayPort and a USB port to combine video and audio to HDMI. It's only 2 channel stereo not 5.1 Dolby Surround.

Audio levels on an external monitor vary during playback when using HDMI audio

I've been having issues with movie playback using a large 1080p HDMI TV. During playback the audio level will come in strong, go faint, then go strong again, but not on any sort of pattern I could discern. It did this on three seperate movies legally purchased via iTunes. I get audio and video without trouble, its just the audio goes soft when it shouldn't.
If you remember the VHS days and "MACROVISION" encoding, then you have an idea what it was doing, although it was the audio levels, not the video playback.
Is this a fault of the system, a DRM gremlin, or something else?

I think you may be onto something with the graphics card concept. The problem I am having only exists when I am working on an HD project. When I switched back to DV-NTSC then the monitor is fine during playback.
Yes, I am routing my external monitor through my DV deck, which is not an HD deck - so again, that could be another weak link in the chain.
This is the first HD project that I am editing, so obviously a few kinks still need to be worked out. My internal hard drive has 1.5 gigs of ram but I am not sure what the specs are on the graphics card.

External projector not being detected when running Leopard

We have recently upgraded a number of our instructor laptops to Leopard. Since the upgrade, we have confirmed an odd problem.
We have a number of multimedia carts in classrooms. The carts use an Extron VSW2 splitter to supply video to a ceiling mounted NEC LT280 projector. One input on the Extron device gets video from a CPU in the cart, the second input is for the laptop.
We have tested identical computers (2 - PowerBook G4 12" laptops, and 2 - MacBook Pro 15" laptops). In each case, one laptop is running OS 10.4.11, the other 10.5.1.
The computers running 10.4.11 detect the the projector and mirror the display. The computers running 10.5.1 will not detect the projector. The computers running 10.5.1 blank the screen when the video cable is attached, but nothing is displayed through the projector. System Profiler reports under 'Hardware -> Graphics/Displays -> Display Connector:' No Display Connected.
If I bypass the VGA splitter (plug the laptops into the VGA port at the wall plate which goes to the projector), both the 10.4 and 10.5 computers function perfectly.
If I do not have a desktop connected to the VGA splitter, both the 10.4 and 10.5 laptops seem to work fine.
I have contacted the vendor that installed the units – Extron has never heard of this problem.
Right now this issue is affecting several instructors, but later in the term, as students need to give presentations, this will turn into a major impediment.
My speculation (unfounded, at this point) is that Leopard may be reducing the signal/voltage being delivered to the video port; the result being that there is not enough signal to trigger the switchover in Extron device.
Any guidance or direction would be greatly appreciated.

I think that Extron has an loop through on Input 1 for a monitor. You're probably using it for the CPU on the cart. Try running the Macs into Input 1 instead of Input 2. You may get it to work. The proj output on Extron stuff is usually buffered so that the projector doesn't pass info back to the computer. If you go into input 1, the computer will "see" the monitor and output properly.
Maybe.
Mind you, that doesn't help a whole lot 'cause you need the monitor for the CPU, right?

Is it possible to silence the external ringer on the Pre when using headphones?

When I get a call on my Pre while using the headphones, I'd like to hear the ringer in my headphones only... Currently when I get a call it rings in the headphones AND via the external speaker. Can this be done and if so how?

InDesign's pasteboard, bleed, and slug areas are independent for each document page. Running header text variables in these areas can capture sources on document pages. If you place a text frame with a character style for the layer name, and a character style for the language name, on a layer, and capture them in a character-style-based running header in the slug, for example, the source from whichever layer is visible will appear in the running header in the slug area. Similarly, you can capture other text variables for page number, filename, date/time, etc.
It may take a little fussing to set it up the first time, but thereafter when you change layer visibility, the visible layer name changes automatically.
NOTE: Text frames on master page pasteboards, bleed, or slug areas do not appear on document pages unless they also touch the document page border.

Hi Kamran,
So you are using Reports 6i. Even in Reports 6i, you should not be hitting this problem. Pl install the latest 6i patchset 15 from Metalink (patch number 3171855). However, it is also possible that this is not actually a Reports issue. Pl try to view the report output in a different browser and see if the issue reproduces.
If it reproduces, you can also try to see a report in the "left to right" direction also results in this problem.

When following example code, mentioned in the Flex Developer
Guide on page 1282 is copied into an mxml example application and I
run the application, validation is never fired.
When I have a look at other example code, which is using the

Could you explain why the example code from the Dev-guide
doesn't work as mentioned in the guide?
