P35 Neo - detecting SATA and IDE

i just bought the new mainboard P35 Neo, i mount it and is everything done and intalled with Windows XP professional.
i was thinking changing to ubuntu and/or trying Windows Vista, BUT... i got a problem:
1) my DVD drive are not detected by my mainboard  ,in the manual says "Due to the IDE1 & SATA7 is controlled by Marvell 88SE6111, the BIOS will not detect the IDE & SATA device and will not show the status"
is it possible to be detected? so i can boot with windows vista dvd or with ubuntu dvd to format the disk and to install a new OS.
my computer configuration (if this helps  :azn: ):
 - Intel Duo-Core 2 at 2.13GHz - 1066MHz FSB - 4 MB L2 Cache
 - Graphic Card - Asus EN8600GT
 - 2 Gbs Memory DDR2
 - 320 Gbs HD SATA
 - mouse keyboard and screen  LOL
 - and OF COURSE the mainboard MSI P35 Neo

Hello!
I am having the exact problem the topic starter has, so i figured i should just continue this topic.
Here goes.
My system:
-MSI P35 Neo, BIOS 1.0
-Intel Core Duo 2 E6750
-Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X2048-6400C4
-XFX GeForce 8800 GTS 320 Mt
-Antec Earthpower 500W
-2x Samsung SpinPoint T166 500GB SATA (SATA 1&2)
-Samsung DVD+/-RW DL RAM 18X IDE Bulk (IDE Master)
-Windows Vista (once it gets installed)
This system was build from scratch, so i don't have an existing OS.
If i go to BIOS i see my 2x SATA hard drives and the IDE DVD drive in the boot Sequence menu, But once i try to launch the vista installation it appears the DVD drive in not recognized. I can check this by pressing F11 during boot and the DVD drive is not listed, only the hard drives are there.
So my questions would be:
1) Is it possible to somehow start the OS installation with this configuration?
2) If not, would it help if i replaced the IDE burner with a SATA DVD Burner?
3) Would an BIOS update to 1.3 have any effect on the DVD Drive being detected?
4) If it came to that, what would be the best method to update the BIOS? I don't have an Floppy drive mounted or an OS for that matter.
Those are some questions that come to mind, so ill update if I figure out more of them.

  • P35 Neo2 BIOS Settings to run Dual Boot SATA and IDE HD's

    Hi,
I was having intermittent problems with a Gigeabyte so upgraded M/B.
I have an IDE "caddy" with 2 Dual boot HD's (Linux Grub booting XP on sda1 and Fedora9 on sda2), and had no problems with either HD's on old M/B.
The old M/B also had  SATA sockets which I installed a 250GB drive as my main setup.  Dual boot again with same setup.  I set the SATA to "auto" and it detected and ran when no IDE caddy was inserted.
Everything ran OK but I had very intermittent CRC failures that I could not isolate, so I upgrade 2 days ago.
Without inserting any IDE drives I can boot the SATA drive OK into Linux OK  (it also detects an ext3 partition on a seperate /backup partition so the IDE interface works).
If I now try and boot the XP on my SATA drive,  I get the dreaded blue screen.
I assume this is due to me having XP installed without the AHCI support as detailed in other (long) thread showing how to overcome this problem!?
I would also like to know if and I can just boot from my IDE drive (with no SATA's connected),   because even though it seems to detect the PATA HD OK,  I cannot get it to boot from either of them!  I know these HD's have not changed as I have checked both of them on the SATA OS and both Logical volumes are still there and the relevant boot flags are both set.
Even though I have a bit of a complex setup,  this may well be a very simple case of BIOS settings (sorry).
    FYI:
I have a A7345 IMS V1.8 012408 BIOS and my two IDE drives are both dual boot with XP on the first partition.
Both Linux partitions are formatted using Logical Volume Management  (LVM).
    Thanks for your time
Any help/pointers would be appreciated as I am not absolutely sure that the M/B is functional or not.

Thanks for the info,  I am now a bit clearer as to what is happening!
I removed known good IDE HD from caddie and put it directly on the IDE cable (after removing the old non LVM linux IDE disk that was on it).
The newly connected HD was initialized OK and I can see both SAT and IDE disks listed with F11.
On trying to boot from the IDE,  it starts up and decompresses the image,  BUT cannot seem to find the LVM Volume group 03 (which is where my /boot partition is located).
It then gives in and after a while,  boots back to the SATA OK (where the bootloader is also inside the LVM so I can't see why the LVM IDE disk is a problem but the LVM SATA boots OK).
I do remember (late last night) trying with just IDE drive and of course it just hung because it did not have any alternative to boot!
    Any other observations/suggestions?
Apologies its late here and I will not be back for a few hours!
    Regards

  • Plzz help SATA and IDE = headahces.

This might be a long post but please help im desparate.
Ok, i got a MAXTOR 160GB SATA hd the other day brand new from newegg.com and i also have the exact same HD that i use currently but it was an IDE. So when i recieved the HD i thought that i would use the sata as the main drive for windows and programs and use the IDE as the slave to store music, programs etc. So everything went great i installed the drivers and loaded windows. But when i laoded windows i installed alot of updates and rebooted only 2 times even thought all the programs i downloaded asked to be rebooted like 10 15 times one install after another. I just wanted to do one reboot instead of 20 of them u know. I guess that was not a good idea cause when i decided to restart from a 8hour uptime of installing windows xp with all the updates and EVEN sp2 but machine now does not boot into XP. What happens is it loads a couple of seconds and i see the xp logo and it constantly restarts the machine. Day after another i cant figure it out. SO i decided to do another fresh install of windows xp on the sata but now i cant do it, it wont let me do it. I get to the screen where i hit f6 and install the third party software and it loads that up fine then i get to the screen where i choose to either repair the OS or press ENTER for a new install. I press ENTER to install new xp again but now all i get is a blue screen of death saying a message of " dirver irq is not or less equal " at the bottem it says viaraid.sys or something.
I am stumped guys cause even though i dont care what i have on the harddrive i wanna atleast install windows xp somehow cause there is a windows xp allready on it with my songs and files but i cant seem to get it working. And i cant even install a fresh copy of xp either. The only way to get it working is if i use the IDE harddrive and i must turn off the SATA controller for the IDE to boot.
plzz help. thankyou. ( sorry for the long post )

Should i unplug my IDE one also cause its set as slave while the SATA is the main.
Yes I would, in the natural way of things, the comp gets to IDE first, and if there is a disk connected, it assumes its C: which contains all the drivers for SATA and the MBR.  So it is maybe confused by the SATA being Master, as well as already seeing SATA drivers on the IDE, even ifthey are not the correct ones.
If you unplug the IDE, the OS will st up the SATA first partition as C: and load XP wherever you tell it to. Then when you load the Via drivers, the OS will put them in the SATA C: partition.

  • Improve SATA and IDE Performance on K8N Neo 4

    Hello,
I have 4 SATA hard drives [2 Western Digital 36 gig Raptors running Raid 0] and [2 Maxtor 200 gig Hard drives running Raid 0] running on XP 64.  I am using the XP64 drives off of MSI's website, and although I appear stable - performance seems a little slow.  I am concerned at the benchmarks Sandra Soft gave me using the Filesystem Benchmark - only rating the drive index of the raptors to 53 Mb/Sec.
My 2 IDE CD ROM drives are also performing poor - with skips, stutters and hangs.  I am using the MS ide drive and both devices are running at DMA 2.
Any advice / better drivers I can use to improve performance.
Also, does anyone know a program compatible with XP 64 where I can monitor temps and voltages?

6.66 ?  I also have the problem is that when i first format and install windows, I get almost everything installed the way I want it, and then i reboot and windows decides to stop loading.  The only way to fix is to do a repair install and then it doesnt seem to do it again.  I have formated maybe 6 times and it has happened each time.  Perhaps when I install XP, I should use the new drivers and not the floppy the MB came with?  I am also getting random crashes.

Blank I have as soon as acquired 975x the platium pue I have a problem with ide2. Configuration:
2 hdd raptor raid 0 on sata 1 and 2
2 hdd maxtor on sata Slavic 3 and 4
1 plextor premium master on ide 1
1 reader dvd slave on ide 1
1 plextor px 716a master on ide 2 ide
the 2 does not come seen in how much has had to disable from bios the jmicron why I could not more make the boot from the raid.
How I can resolve this problem?

    1. Format a floppy disc in XP and make sure you use the "Create MS-DOS startup disc" - option:
    2. Erase all files on that disc BUT the following:
    COMMAND.COM
    IO.SYS (hidden system file)
    MSDOS.SYS (hidden system file)
    3. Now there should be enough room on the Disc for the Flash Tool and the new BIOS file (copy both onto the disc).
The flash tool is included in every official BIOS download from the MSI Support Page for your mainboard:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/bios/bos/spt_bos_detail.php?UID=746&kind=1
    4. Ususally it is a good idea to scan your disc for errors before you use it to flash a new BIOS.
    5. Restart computer, boot from disc and enter flash command followed by BIOS file name:
    AWFL865.EXE W7246IMS.716

  • Sata and ide drive troubles

I tried searching on this, but didn't find what I was looking for.  If my sata drive is plugged in on it's own, everything boots fine, but when I hook up my ide drive, windows won't boot.  It goes through the Nvidia boot utility and tells me it can't find a boot disk.  Even if I go through and manually select the sata drive as the boot drive, it still doesn't work.  I've tried the ide drive on my primary channel with a cdrw on the secondary, and vice versa.  I know it will work, because it worked previously.  Had to format and reinstall and now it's a no go.  I've tried the sata on channels 1 and 3 with nothing different

I must say I had similar problem.   While swapping IDE cables back and forth among different hdrives, the computer would not boot, would not even recognize the WD or Maxtor hard drive in any master/slave configuration.  In fact in the POST,  it would see my SATA Hitachi, but would refuse to boot from it.
The solution was a new replacement IDE cable.  I guess, after several dozens of swaps, if not careful, some of the tiny cable strands in the IDE cable will be damaged permanently as a result of pulling on them while trying to connect/disconnect them.   The evidence of a damaged IDE cable is not apparent.  This happened to the red MSI supplied cable that came with my mobo.
After struggling with this problem for a day, I did come up with the idea of just trying and replacing the cable, and voila - problem was solved, and puter booted up no problem.
    Hope that helps.

  • P35 Neo-F and Intel Core2Quad Q9550 E0 Stepping

Hello ! I got some problems with my computer since i've changed the cpu.
before i had an intel core2duo e6750 on my msi p35 neo-f board and everything worked fine !
    a few months ago i wanted to "tune" my computer a bit , so i've bought a new cpu -> core2quad q9550 e0 stepping
my computer didnt want to work (boot) with this cpu , so i changed to my old cpu and updated my bios version , cause i thougt it should help, considering the informations on msi page !
i've updated to ami 1.9 without using msi live update, using your tool from this forum. ofc i did the cmos reset etc pp, loaded bios defaults.
then i've inserted my new cpu (q9550) and it seemed to work !!!
it seemed to work for a few days.../hours...
since then i was getting bluescreens! irregular bluescreens, no matter what i was doing on my computer. bluescreen messages were different nearly each time. sometimes there was something said about "sys32..."..i dont rly remember. next time i will write it down
i've checked my RAMs with some tools , checked my HDDs with tools, everything fine ! then i wanted to check my cpu with prime95 using a torture test (blend) and my computer crashed directly (short bluescreen) and rebooted ! so i am quite sure that my new cpu / bios configuration / version is the problem !
so my next idea was to reinstall my windows 7 prof. , considering some posts on the www.
well it didnt help. today , one day after reinstalling windows, i got a bluescreen when booting windows. just when booting , without doing anything, next boot worked and computer didnt crash since then, 2 hours ago. so as you can see these crashes/bluescreens are really irregular !
now i am on the msi page again , looking at the cpu support list for my mainboard.
    ->
    Core 2 Quad     Yorkfield     SLB8V     Q9550     333     2.83     12M      N/A     E0      95     7360v21.zip
so i should flash my bios to 2.1 ???? i've read something about different versions of my mainboard on this board , some are able to work with bios 2.1 , some others are not !
    this thread :
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=139992.msg1046500;topicseen
now i dont know what to do anymore....flash to 2.1 or not ? where can i check whether i can flash to 2.1 ???
is it possible that my power supply is too weak ?
    my system :
    windows 7 prof 64 bit
    500W BeQuiet Straight Power
    MSI Neo P35-F
    Intel Core2Quad Q9550
    8Gb DDR2 RAM
    Sapphire HD 5850 Toxic 1Gb DDR5
as i said my system worked fine before changing the cpu, so my issues should come from the new cpu imho
    thanks a lot !
if you need more information i will provide them ofc !

  • P35 Neo: DVD freezes PC after XP installation!

    Hi all,
I'm having a very strange problem with my new system (system details at bottom). After finished installing windows XP on a clean system (new HDD, no bios updates) the system hangs on its first reboot if the XP CD is in the drive. So I enter into safe mode (no networking because the Realtek drivers are not installed yet) and continue the installation of the MSI drivers from the CD that came w/ the mobo. Reboot hangs again when cd is in the drive. Back into safe mode w/ networking on this time. I insert cd (any cd) and the system hangs. reboot in safe more w/o network and the cds work fine! The system works fine in normal mode as long as there's nothing in the dvdrom. Everything looks fine in device manager (dvd is reported ok, etc). I even updated bios to 1.6 and installed all the latest drivers from the MSI website. No change. If I disable networking (e.g., from the bios) then I can use the dvd! I did all XP upgrades to no avail.
The problems (it seems to me) is between the ICH9 controller (why is the dvd under a PCI-E controller anyway?) and XP.
    Any ideas welcome!

Note: The IDE Port of you board is hosted by Marvell 88SE6111 chipset, not by Intel ICH9. There are no special Marvell Drivers available that you could use instead of Windows XP standard drivers.
    A few questions:
    - Does your XP-Installation include SP2?
    - Is your optical IDE driver properly jumpered as MASTER?
    - Is there any other PATA drive connected to the IDE port?
    - What kind of IDE Cable are you using (40 or 80 Pin)?

Do you no the brand/model of your optical drive?  Have you checked if there is a firmware update available that solves compatibility issues?
Do you have another IDE drive to try?
Two last question for the moment:
    - What kind of PSU are you using (brand/model/amperages on +12V, 5V and 3.3V power rails)?
    - Are any extra devices hooked up to the system, that you did not mention so far (add-on cards, card readers, USB/Firewire devices etc.)?

    Hi there !
    simple question for you :
what is the difference between SATA and IDE, for Hard drvives ?
Is one of the interfaces quicker than the other ?

    1. What is Serial ATA?
    2. Yes Serial ATA is faster and allows better air flow with SATA cables.
and most of the time will offer "Raid"

  • P35 Neo - auto-detection odd order?

I have the MSI P35 Neo motherboard.
When I press DEL to get inside the BIOS. Under "Standard CMOS Features" it shows:
SATA 1: Samsung SATA2 hard disk
    SATA 2: None
    SATA 3: None
    SATA 4: Samsung SATA2 DVD-RW
    This is correct, I believe.
However, in the POST stage when I boot the computer, it says:
    Auto-detecting Pri Master..IDE Hard disk
    Auto-detection 3rd Master..ATAPI CDROM
    Why is this?
I have no problem, but I think it is odd that it says 3rd Master is ATAPI CDROM, while inside the BIOS it say SATA4 is the CDROM.

No, then I would have to open the case...

but I don't think it is "right".
You probably have to differentiate between those two notations.  They don't refer to the same thing.

  • MSI P35 Neo FIR IDE channels

    Hey there,
I have an MSI P35 Neo FIR and I'm curious as to how the single IDE port on the motherboard works. Where does the IDE's primary and secondary channel lie in relation to the rest of the channels on the system? It sounds like a weird question, but what I'm getting at is the board has several SATA channels which seem to be of higher priority.
I need to make a 320GB IDE drive the most prioritised "master" drive in the system, but I'm concerned that the other SATA channels mean that at best the drive would be master of the 8th channel or thereabouts. Am I making a small amount of sense?

Nowdays, SATA Controller treats the drives with individuality, where it can treat each SATA drive as IDE Master Number #x. Only for IDE where master and slave are still involved.
I have the same curiousity as Jack only why does the master drive concern much in your system? If it's the boot order and you have the SATA drive as the boot drive, you can simply go into BIOS and select that particular drive to boot off from. If it's a new installation and you need to run the installation disc off the optical drive, you can also select that to boot off in BIOS settings as well.

  • P35 Neo 2 Fr - SATA drives not supported ?!?

I have just screwed together my new PC.
    Motherboard : MSI P35 Neo 2 FR
    CPU : Intel E6850
    Mem: 2GB DDR2 800
    Drives (2x): Seagate 250GB SATA
Windows: Vista Home Premium OEM (dutch)
It is a totaly clean install.
Problem is: When installing VISA it stops at the drive selection. It tells me (translate from Dutch): "the hardware of this computer possibly does not support the booting of this harddrive. Check that the drive controller is switched on in the BIOS"
When i'm in the bios (1.4) all seems well.
    What to do?
EDIT: stangely, Seagate says on its site that : Seagate hard drives do not require any special drivers for Microsoft Windows operating systems. The generic hard drive driver should support your hard drive. We recommend using the latest Windows Service Pack (SP) updates as these often refresh the Windows drivers
This makes is hard to do a (what i have been reading)"F6 Disc & install driver" solution. Or are there non-brand specific sata drivers.
    Help!

It was not my intention of installing the drives in Raid. I started out setting as AHCI.
Later on i tried setting as raid as MSI does have a driver for SATA Raid (on their site and on the supplied driver disc), unfortunately no success.
I think i must admit defeat. Tomorrow morning i will purchase a new IDE drive and install VISTA on this. I have the feeling it should then be easy to access the SATA drives.
Off topic (not really) : i downloaded the Seagate DiscWizard on my existing pc. This promises to solve all these kind of problems.  But it refused to start because it needed at least one Seagate product installed on my pc. Hahahaha, of course my old pc is fitted with WD drives. Not very useful from Seagate.
Off topic 2: roll over bios, we need EFI
