P35 Platinum Memory/Boot Issues

Cpu: e6300 core 2 duo
Motherboard: MSI P35 Platinum
Memory: Generic? hynix chips pc4200 (can get a pic of the stick if you want) 2x 512
Vid Card: ati x1600 pcie
Hard drive: 250gb sata
PSU: Xclio stablepower 500w
When I start the computer, the normal boot reboot sequence starts and eventually the LEDs stop at RRGR. The memory I'm using is from an oldish hp pavilion a1642x http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00787158&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3304173# who's mobo went out. I'd like to know if maybe theres something wrong that I'm doing or if both sticks happen to be bad or something else that I'm missing? I've tried different combinations of slots/sticks and tried manually setting the fsb with the JB1 and JB2 jumpers. Someone said the 1.3 bios was picky about ram but I'm not sure how to check what bios version it is since I cant get that far =p

  • P35 Platinum Memory???

The book that came with the board states it is only compatible with DDR2 667/800 MHz memory, but if you look on there website in the documentation for that board it has 1066 MHz listed also in the specifications. Can I use 1066 MHz memory (PC8500) 8 GB max??? Someone please reply.
    P35 Platinum Motherboard
Intel Q6600 2.4 GHz CPU (only using DOT)
    2 WD HD RAID 0
    Thermaltake CPU cooler
    4 GB DDR2 PC6400 800 MHz memory
    Windows Vista Ultimate x64

I don't have a P45 chipset, but as you can see above I have a P35 chipset. I had purchased some Corsair Dominator memory PC8500 1066 MHz. A total of 8 GB which is the max for this board. It says nothing about OC'd memory in the specs online for this board just DDR2 667/80/1066 MHz. The only reason I asked was I had originally installed these and was experiencing memory dumps on a fairly frequent occasion, but I think I have contributed that to Trend Micros's Internet Security software. There latest release for this year had been giving me other issues also. I uninstalled, but in the same token went back to the PC6400 800 MHz memory. Now I have recently installed the Corsair memory again and so far so good. I just have to leave the Advanced Dram Timings in the BIOS set to Auto, otherwise if I change anything the system will not boot. CPU-Z reports the timings at 5-7-7-24, and voltage to auto, which sets it to 1.8 volts I believe. This is actually not what the manufacturer says it should be, but it is stable. I also have the CPU Q6600 OC'd to 3.0 GHz. Like I said so far so good and I see a significant improvement from the 800 MHz memory.. Thanks for the info. If I find anything to the contrary I will re post here for all.

  • [P35 Platinum] Memory lost: 4 GB = 3,25 GB?

Well... I now have system for some time now and works fine, but there is another problem: my computer sees only 3,25 GB memory, while I have 4 GB.
I seen in BIOS this gem (Standard CMOS features->System Information):
    Physical memory: 4096 MB
    Usage memory: 3328 MB
Wooonderful. ??? Anyone knows what I can do to get full 4 GB?
    Motherboard: P35 Platinum (MS-7345 v1.x)
    Bios version: v 1.0 050407
Memory: Kingston HyperX PC-800 2048 MB DDR2 KHX6400D2K2/2G Dual Channel, (generally 4 sticks for 1024 MB each)

I understood very well. I am an Software Engineer. I can refer you to this MSDN post for more information on the subject:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/hiltonl/archive/2007/04/13/the-3gb-not-4gb-ram-problem.aspx
    A qoute:
"Significant chunks of address space below 4GB (the highest address accessible via 32-bit) get reserved for use by system hardware:
        • BIOS – including ACPI and legacy video support
        • PCI bus including bridges etc.
        • PCI Express support will reserve at least 256MB, up to 768MB depending on graphics card installed memory
UPTO 768MB depending on gfx card installed memory..
This means that essentially you have about 512-768mb ram that you cannot use as the OS isn't able to use the address space as it is reserved for the above mentioned devices.
    EDIT:
This is also true for AGP graphics cards
Sorry about the first post was very vague..!
I need to remind to all. To have gfx to share the physical memory, is only when your gfx does not have enough RAMDAC capacity itself.
For example, if you PCIE/AGP card is only 256MB and you have 2GB RAMs. Under non-graphics intensive enviroment, you will still see 2048MB RAMs detected. If under graphics intensive operations and the system finds that 256MB is not sufficient, it'll borrow the part of the "allocated" size from the physical memory. Most commonly seen in boards supporting AGP cards, where you'll see AGP Aperture Size. This is where you'll be able to allocated 16MB to 512MB depending on your board and BIOS for the gfx, if in any case it needs to borrow some.
Example, I've allocated 512MB out of 2048MB for my 256MB gfx, I'll still see about 2048MB physical memory while system is not using graphics intensive applications. If I run a rendering application, example LightWave 3D, the application finds 256MB isn't sufficient to do rendering of graphics, it'll communicates with OS and from OS to understand how much physical memory is allocated for borrowing to suffice the gfx for the job. OS will detect BIOS settings and return information to application. Thereafter, application will initiate the amount of memory that needs to be borrowed, example 256MB. From here 256MB will be blocked specially for the gfx and application to complete the task without disturbance. This is when you'll see a drop in physical memory detected.
Another common scenerio is onboard graphics with shared memory of up to xxx MB, which is commonly found in laptops.
I just hope that this will strengthen the point brought up as it is not only software based but also hardware based for this to happen.
    Best Regards.

  • P35 platinum, memory and videocard questions

    Hi folks.
I recently had a problem with an Asus P5K board in the sense that it doesn't allow use of 8gb of ram (despite saying it does) when you use 4x 2gb sticks. I want to replace this board with a P35 platinum but first I want to make sure my geil 8gb kit (4x 2gb DDR2 6400 sticks) will work (I'll be runnnig windows xp x64).
Also I have an XFX Geforce 8800 Ultra which has quite a big cooler, I read in some reviews of the board that the southbridge heatsink is too high for cards with big coolers like that to fit neatly. My question is will it still work? Can I screw the card in or do I have to live in fear of it plummetting out of the slot?
Thanks in advance for your answers.

I've tried 4 x 2GB OCZ DDR2 memory sticks. P35 Platinum detects 8GB main memory but shows usage memory as only 4GB out of 8GB. I've emailed MSI helpline if they can help out.

I have replaced my motherboard as I had thought it originally was a duff BIOS chip as despite reflashing it, it would rarely pass the POST.
All parts apart from the PSU are the original Kit which had been working for 13 months ish.
Problem i am experiencing is the D-Bracket 2 Diagnostic LEDs are coming up Red/Amber as opposed to Red/Green and the machine just sits there and never displays anything, hence why BIOS isn't mentioned as I have no idea what version is currently on the BIOS chip.
I have stripped out down to just CPU and still get the same problem, I then swapped it for a FX53 which I had lying around which I know worked as it came out of my Vapochill chassis and also swapped out for some OCZ PC3700 512MB EB Dual Channel Platinum 3-3-2-8.. still no joy.
Any ideas greatly appreciated as I don't want to rebuild my machine as it is exactly how I wanted it I feel I have checked everything but maybe someone can shed a little light.
Anyone want a spare mboard or two ?? I now have three !

Your Tagan's behavior was typical of a failing PSU... but the Turb-Cool model you mention doesn't exist at the PCP&C web site; in fact there are a total of five other 510 models, some of which have only an 8-pin CPU power connector, so it's impossible to figure which one you have.  Does your PSU have a 4- or 8-pin CPU power connector and, if the latter, how do you have it connected to the mbrd?  The only 8-pin CPU power connector I've seen could not be connected to a 4-pin socket, which your mbrd has... or does your mbrd have both 4- and 8-pin?
The only other thing I'd remark is that Vista will not run satisfactorily with your nForce3 mbrd and an ATI video card.

  • P35 Platinum - Memory Issue?

    Hi All,
I've recently built a new system and am getting memory related BSODs. Both memory sticks test fine with memtest individually and together. Windows is fine with either stick in individually but BSODs when both are in.
I've been discussing this on the Corsair support forum so for more info take a look at http://www.asktheramguy.com/v3/showthread.php?t=63665
    Any ideas?
    Cheers
    Andy

Call me stupid.......... if you wish to
The 600W PSU does not seem, upto the level of spex you have for system.
Quad Core & 8800 would use that on their own....
Seems like the +12V rails are draining the rest of the system for power.......
This would occur, when you are in high activity gaming mode for instance or when system is under load such as running benchmark/test software. BSOD just pops up.
Can you try a slightly less powerful graphics card, as a test?
    Will watch thread.

Thought I would check......... 4x+12V rail...........  the is not enough power there. Great system let down by PSU. <sorry>

  • Neo4 Platinum Board, boot issue, cannot get past first screen

I've spent some time looking through the forum to see if anyone had a solution to the problem I am about to describe and did not find one.
    Here is the issue:
Whenever any USB device (1.1 or 2.0) is hooked up to any one of the four onboard USB ports all I get is the initial logo screen and the computer never moves on. I have tested hooking up a USB Keyboard, USB Mouse, enclosures, pen drives, etc. As long as there is a usb device in an onboard USB port the computer will not move past the initial logo screen. If there are no USB devices plugged into the onobard USB ports then the system will go all the way through with the boot and get into windows. Once within Windows the four onboard USB ports work fine. You can plug devices in and they are recognized. If there is already a solution to this issue I apologize for posting this and please point me in the right direction.
    Thanks to anyone who replies
    Specifications:
    MB: MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum
    CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3500+
    Memory: 2 Kingston KVR400X64C3AK2/512
VGA: XFX nVidea GeForce 6600 Ultra DDR3 256MB Dual DVI, S-Video Out
    HD: 2 Western Digital WD200JB
    FD: 1 Floppy Drive
Optical: DVD Burner and DVD Drive
PS: 500W, 12V, bought 24-pin adapter to hook up to mobtherboard
Audio: Creative Sound Blaster Audgiy 4 Platinum

Did you use the USB ports on the motherboard, or did you use any USB port attached to the motherboards extra connectors? if the latter, it suggests that you have some faulty wiring of the USB cables. Check so that the connectors of the USB ports are correct with their signals according to the pin layout.
Faulty wired USB will cause the problem you describe.
Also check that you have not damaged the USB port. I have seen some computers where the plastic pin in the USB port has been broken of, and the connectors have been grounded. One example was a computer where the 5VSB was bent, grounding it, resulting in that the motherboard did not recognise any PS2 or USB keyboards.
Third, if the devices you attach draw to much amphere through the USB, it may cause these problems. You might need a powered USB hub.
Fourth, make sure your powersupply is powerful enough if you have many USB devices.

  • New Build P7N Platinum wont boot issue

    Hi Guys,
First of all can i give you all the spec of the machine i am having the issue with a s its NOT the same one as in my signature.
P7N Platinum (not sure on bios versions as i cant get to it!)
    OCZ 8500CZ memory (2x2gb)
E8600 cpu with Arctic 7 cooler
tagen BZ series 900 watt PSU
    Problems are as follows:
I have just assembled the system for my wife and when i powered up for the first time i got into the bios no problems. I changed the voltage for the memory as it runs at 2.1 volts and changed the date and also the boot priority settings to DVD drive first, then HDsecond and saved as i wanted to install an OS on reboot.
I rebooted and started to install XP but it froze during the format of the drive section.
When i now try and reboot i am getting nothing at all. The screen stays black but CPU fan spins and goes at normal speed as does the rear case fan. The PSU lights up and the GFX card fan is spinning.
I have tried running just 1 stick of memory but this has not worked or made any difference. All the normal Motherboard lights appear to be on.
Can i also point out that on the first boot ( when i forgot to check what bios version i was running) the E8600 was recognised in the bios with the correct multiplier and speed. This is my first complete build and i was wondering if i have missed anything obvious
I need some help now as i diont know what to do.

    Edit :
Did you try to clear CMOS with pc unplugged?
Be sure to turn off/pull the plug of PSU & hit the case power switch to drain PSU/MB capacitors before you clear CMOS. That should restore factory BIOS settings so you can at least boot to BIOS again and see what revision you have. You can also lookat the sticker on the BIOS chip, last 3 digits indicate version ie 100 would be v1.0,
110 = v1.1. For your CPU you should have v1.2 going by CPU support list.
I'm pretty sure the chip is located here on your MB:

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum RAID Boot Issue...

    Hi everyone,
I am running two WD 120gb drives in single-drive mode.  Everything is working fine.  My issue is that every time I boot, I have to wait nearly 10 seconds for a message that says 'Detecting Array' just before it loads WinXP.  The thing is, I have RAID disabled in the BIOS.  How do I get rid of this annoying boot message?
    Any help would be appreciated!

The are still making the K8N Neo2- F which is the same thing except no firewire and one gigabyte lan instead of two lans.  Otherwise, same mobo with same bios.  MSI 7025.
or if you´re lucky and your reseller has them in stock..that was my case    wus supposed to change my cpu cooler(amd athlon 64 3500+(venice) ) removed everything...to note...I did this with another friend..so after a little while when all the things were on place I hade to take a number 2, when I got back the comp was all fixed and my friend asks me to start it..I start it and nothing happens..turns out that he had used all of the copper paste and drenched the socket and the spu...so i tested the cpu and it had survived, but the motherboard was all dead..so I rma´d it as u guys say and I got the same modell back and everything worlks perfectly...and as for my friend...he has two blue eyes @ the moment :P

  • P35 Platinum Motherboard suspected issue

    Hello guys:
Im new forum user although ive been purchasing msi products for a long time.
I got an issue with my desktop computer that is a bit annoying:
Im running windows 7 64 bit version because i installed 6Gb of ram (DDR2 800 Mhz) divided in 2 sticks of 2 GB each and 2 sticks of 1Gb each. I had to choose a 64 bit OS because 32 bit ones dont support that ammount of memory. Recently (a few months ago) my computer has been crashing a lot or freezes while using applications . Everything points to a possible bad memory stick but i have serious doubts. I scanned ram sticks with memtest (1 at each time) and results show im having memory problems with all of them. I cant imagine that all 4 memory sticks are damaged so im thinking about a problem with CPU cache or a mainboard issue (maybe chipset or even trouble with memory slots in mb). Is there any tool i can use to test my MSI mobo?(not everest or other benchmarks).
Besides what im asking above, i noticed my BIOS is not updated  so i checked MSI support site to find the latest one. My version is 1.6 and latest seems to be 1.C, so i checked forum and downloaded the USB Bios Flasher that forum guys created (with MSI Support). When i enable option "SureHands Live Update" it displays Bios versions that seem to be newer than 1.C (Example: 1.D , 1.E, 1.F). My question is are these versions that appear in tool but not in site reliable? Are they probably Bios versions under Beta test?
I wanna try flashing bios to see if the problem fixes with that.
Well... sorry for the inconvenience and for my english because im not native. I live in South America.
Thanks to everyone and i hope i get some help!
    Mariano
PD.: All voltages seem to be fine

You are mixing different kinds of memory modules.  That leads to stability issues in many cases.
Have a look at this list:  http://ramlist.i4memory.com/ddr2/
As you can see, different revisions of Corsair DDR2-800 modules can be based on entirely different chip types and may not very well together when combined in one setup.
Try to reduce the memory clock speed to DDR2-667 and see what happens or raise the memory voltage somewhat (try 1.95V) and please, uninstall Dual Core Center.  That tool can be an additional stability threat in itself.
Last night i removed the 2 single 1gb memory modules. Ill check what happens from now on.
Does someone know why bios flashing tool (the pendrive one) retrieves newer BIOS versions than the ones published in MSI official site? I will try to flash BIOS because i noticed it has issues with 4Gb of RAM or more.
And yeah... dualcore center seems to be evil
    Thanks for answering

    1 seagate 320 gig sata 2 drive
    4 gig 1066 mem
    winxp32 sp 2
Hi all, I'm on my second p35 as my first one died due to a duff mem slot and I think this ones developed a fault to. Up until about 3 weeks ago the board and 3 individual sata 2 drives have performed flawlessly but then while burning a dvd with nero the buffer emptied and the disk failed. I also noticed that winrar extraction of dvdr in .rar format that normally takes 1min 25 secs to unrar to a drive was taking as long as 4 minutes if not more.
The normal sata performance seems to have halved for no apparent reason, hdd tach was reporting problems with 2 drives but these have now disappeared. It seems like there is a problem but I cant pin it down to one specific thing because the system runs fine other than that. No crashes, bosd's or anything else; just really crap hdd drive performance when transferring files and and unraring file between the drives.I'm even seeing cyclic redundancy errors from my hdd when transferring files. I have just tried encoding a dvd image [ on 1 drive to another ] using dvdshrink and where in the past I would see 40,000kbs speed now it crawled along at 19,000.
So is my sata contoller on the board broken/failing and how can I test it to prove it? Thanks in advance people.

The system ran fine for weeks with no probs. Same psu no change [ enermax is not a cheap generic psu plus its a carry over from my old sytem that ran 2 7800 gtx's in sli with the same hdd's]. I find it hard to believe that sustained data transfer between drives would be a psu issue all of a sudden. Burning a dvd to disk would not be an excessive power drain, that was the first time the fault maifested itself. Also that was the only thing happening at the time. Im not a multi tasker, one thing at a time. I do appreciate you guys throwing idea's my way. I'm hedging towards an intermitent hdd problem but as its not all the time its going to be a bugger to pin down as which drive it is. I would love it to be as simple as a dodgey hdd as otherwise how do you recreate a sata controller issue when faulting a mobo

  • P35 Platinum memory question.

    Hello!
Im new on this forum and I have a little question. I have two Corsair TWIN2X 6400 DDR2, 2048MB CL5 Kit w/two matched CM2X1024A-6400 Dimm's and just want to now wich slots they should be in. I currently have them in slot 1 (green) and 3 (orange). But I have heard that when using two ddrmem they should be placed in the right way for the best stability.

ok, thanks. Then I don't have to wonder about that anymore

    Thanks in advance

That is not necessarely the only correct answer.  Your CPU operates at 266 MHz FSB-frequency.  That means at least in theory 533 MHz modules should work if the BIOS is able to detect them and if it sets FSB/DRAM ratio to 1:1.
However, try officially supported modules first.  If you have a spare 667 MHz standard RAM module or if you can borrow one, use those for testing.
In a worst case scenario, your board came with BIOS v1.3, which seems to have major compatibility issues. With generic 667 Mhz RAM, it is in most cases possible to work around these problems. This may not be the case, I am just providing an alternative explanation to your problem.  Try with different RAM first.
Also, the board has two jumpers that allow you to pre-set certain default FSB-clock speeds (200, 266 and 333 MHz).  Have a look at your mainboard manual to compare jumper settings.

  • P35 Platinum + BIOS issue?

    Hi,
Today I updated the BIOS for my P35 to 1.3 through Windows. Everything seemed to go OK but as the system rebooted it never came back to life. The D-LEDs indicate "Memory DecetionFail" however the system was working just fine before the flash.
The ram i'm using is "Corsair XMS2 6400C4".
    Rest of the system is:
    -P35 Platinum
    -E6750
    -Above mentioned ram in 2 x 1GB
    -GF 7900GT
    -Creative X-Fi
    -Antec NeoHE 550W
Any ideas? Try to find a floppy and reflash back to 1.1?

Try clearing cmos carefully (with power cord disconnected) as described in the manual.  Then try it with battery removed and letting machine sit for at least 30 minutes before restoring jumper to original position, closing case and reconnecting powercord.  Windows flashing can be quite risky as you just learned.  If cmos clear does not work, you should reflash back to the last bios that worked (see other threads for right way to flash).  Good luck
Thanks for the tip i tried to clear the CMOS right away but it didn't do anything...i've since read that there are some issues with the 1.3 bios and CL4 ram and i'm going to get some ordinary CL5 DDR2-667 ram tomorrow and will try to boot to see if that does it..
The reason i did the Windows update thing is that i have no floppy so will have to get me one of those as well tomorrow to make sure that I can reflash to 1.1 if indeed the BIOS is corrupt due to the Windows update.
