P35 Platinum/Q6600 Intel Core runs HOT! (I think)

I Just bought and assembled:
2GB Corsair DDR2 pc6400/800mhz
700x Toughpower Thermaltake 700w PSU
MSI P-35 Platinum MainBoard / Intel Chipset
Intel CoreDuo2 Quad Q6600 CPU (2.4)
Nvidia 8600GT 512MB / DDR2 GPU (Pci-ex16)
CM 690 Coolermaster Mid ATX Chassis (Case)
WINXP (Service Pack2)
Three120mm case fans (I think they are only connected to the PSU)
1)Raptor WD SataII 74 GB for apps and OS Hard drive
2) Western Digital SataII 500 GB Internal hard Drive for Storage
OK.
Now after putting everything together and it seemingly is working well, does anyone have any idea what the average Intel Core Duo2 Quad (Q6600) 2.4CPU Temperature should be running at? I have a MSI (Microstar P-35 Platinum Mobo) that came with DualCoreCenter Utility to monitor temp, system temps and
settings in the Bios.
I went to the BIOS and noticed that the CPU Temp was running at 61 c / 141 f ! That sounds pretty high to me. The System Temp was 29 0 / 84 f.
The Fan speed was1775 RPMS. Which one? It did not say,but I do have a front case 120mm,and a rear 120mm fan, and a 120mm side case fan, ad they are working.
In Bios, the System Fan #3 and #4 is Disabled. Could that be that my friend hooked up the Fans directly to the Power supply and not split them to the mainboard?
Is there website on Normal operating temperatures for the INTEL Processors?
If anyone has the MSI P-35 Platinum Mainboard, and has installed the DuoCoreCenter utility, How do you change the temp settings for the Fans and the CPU? I've seen the DOT Utility to change the OC settings,but I do not want to OC.
I installed the DualCoreCenter Temp monitoring software from the P-35 MSI (Micro-Star) Mobo Utility Disc and I also downloaded yet another software >CORETEMP (v0.96) software to see what B gwan'on, and it shows that all four Cores are listed,
frequency is 2402.43 MHZ,
Platform is LGA 775,
VID is 1.2375v
and the following temps:
Tj.Max - 212 F 100C
CORE #O 142 F / 60C
CORE #1 138 F / 59C
CORE #2 126 F / 52C
CORE #3 124 F / 51C
INTEL CoreDuo2 Q6600 2.4 Kentsfield Quad The Stock Q6600 CPU heatsink Fan that came with the CPU only had three strips of adhesive on the bottom. I'm sure when I seated the CPU/HSF they were tight! Can I still try to tightned the posts without removing the HSF? or get a better Fan along with that ArdticSilver 5 Thermal paste?

A few peeps told me that check to see if the Stock Intel Fan is seated..That the HSF or the CPU is not seated correctly and to remove and clean 91% alchol and apply Artic Silver5 thermal paster.
I looked at the leg pins and AhHa! One was loose, I tightened it up and now it's a few degrees cooler. Do I want to go with the coolest I can get so long as it does not go past the 212F MAX?
I let the beast cool overnight and upon startup, I checked the Coretemp and it read the following >
CORE # 0 > 136 F
CORE # 1 > 133 F
CORE # 2 > 120 F
CORE # 3 > 120 F
Well, I could remove the piece of crap Intel HSF,clean off the contacts,re-apply the thermal compound and see if that works...OR remove (throw away) and replace with a new 3rd party HSF that sits on top of the board like the Intel does, OR remove the MoBo to install the HSF brackets,and find a heavy duty HSF, the paste,and put together.
I wish there would be a dependable,not too heavy, and not real expensive HSF I could place on top w/o removing the Mobo...lots of cabling,wires, cards,etc. to deal with.:ohmy:
Can anyone tell me what the highest temp possible to run without causing damage to the CPU, and the GPU?
Does anyone feel these are still too high of temps? Do I DISABLE the Smart fan? Can I do anything to chnage the temp in the DUALCORE CENTER?

I want to try to get my Q6600 processor up from 3.0 to 3.6 GHz, though I'd appreciate to get a clue to what settings might be the goal. I have little experience with overclocking, but I think 3.6GHz is a realistic goal.

Q6600, been running at 3.0GHz the last 6 months by simlply upping the FSB
4x 2GB ddr2 800MHz Mushkin value ram
Initial settings:
I can get it boot up at 3.6GHz/1600MHz fsb, by upping cpu volt and others but it fails the Prime95 stress test immediately.
multiplier x9
memory auto
cpu V = 1.375 (too low perhaps?) (default=1.275)
NB V = 1.425 (default=1.250)
SB io V= 1.7 (default=1.5)
SB V= 1.05 (default=1.05)
Before trying to tweak incrementally I hehe would like to try some tested values to start from, and hope I get lucky and can go on from there.

Being somewhat in a hurry, and being a newb, I tried getting the Q6600 to work at 3.6Ghz (400/1600MHz fsb, mult x9), but I couldnt make it stable with Prime95.
Lowering it down to 3.4Ghz seem to be really ok, and it has been stable for some time in Vista x64. Seems i can stick with this and mabye try to tweak it a little later.
I still would like to hear from anyone running the MSI P35 Platinum with Q6600 at 3.6 with air cooling, and learn about their voltages.

OC results P35 Platinum Q6600

Just, FYI my OC results on my Vista64 system
- P35 Platinum MB Bios V1.8
- Q6600 running at 3.2 Ghz (8x multiplier, speedstep off)
- Zalman 9700NT cooler
- FSB 400 Mhz
- Mem GEIL 4x1GB 4-4-4-12 at 800 Mhz @ at 2.1 V
- Vcore 1.375
- NB 1.45
- Nexus Caterpillar (silent) case
Idle CPU temp is 38-39 C / max temp still unknown :-)
System perfectly stable, the perf difference with the stock speeds is huge.

Got that with Artic Cooler HS (kind of noisy/crappy)...
40°C idle, 68°C 66 hours prime95 load without errors.
Question: How can you know it's stable without running prime/orthos?
8GB of Oced memory from 800MHz to 960MHz at 5-5-5-18.
Effective Vcore is 1.320V, you?
Video card is OCed as well.
BIOS 1.9B1.

P6n Diamond, Q6600...running hot?

Hello all, it's been about a year or so since I built my PC, and no real complaints so far. I never bothered to OC...never felt the need. However recently I got interested in it, so I downloaded coretemp, cpuz, and prime95. Just running the torture test with NO OC, and my temps keep climbing and climbing, into 75 max before i close prime95 due to fear of frying something! Is prime95/torture test programs only to be used with aftermarket CPU cooling? I have great airflow, all the optional fans w/ my Antec 900, and was shocked to see those kind of numbers and I guess I'm just wondering if this is normal, or maybe indicating a faulty CPU? Once I end the prime95 test, all temps immediately plummet down to low 30s celcius. I'd like to OC my q6600 to somewhere within 2.8-3 ghz, but looking at these results and I'm thinking I definetly need an aftermarket CPU cooler to even think about OC.
To think people run prime 95 for a full day?? Would probably burn my house down at the rate my temps increase!!
Been fiddling around since I posted this, and looks like my temps never go over 75oC for the first phaze of prime95 tests, but then after Tes 3 completes and Test 1 starts over again, this is when my temps start to soar to high 70s, and thats when I end prime95 IN FEAR!

First of all, oc-ing with a stockcooler = bad idea.
Second, the Q6600 is known to be a hot head, especially if you got a B3 stepping.
Third, you'll never get such a load as Prime95 will do on your cpu in normal use. Its just a program to test all to the limit and the limit is something, we homeusers, will likely never see, unless benching.

No your cpu will not burn your house down, around 80-85C it begins to throttle down to avoid damage and will eventually shut down if temp keeps on rising.
Like you already mentioned, buy a decent aftermarketcooler first before even thinking of oc-ing your quad.
Better yet, if you buy a quad, buy a decentcooler with it, cause the intel stock is crap for quads.
If you had a dualcore, like I have, then you could get a minor oc with stockcooling, but I would recommend against it.
So read some reviews, google is your friend and look around to see whats best for you.

P35 platinum and intel e8400 cpu

i am looking to update my cpu and i like the intel e8400 specs but msi are still doing test on this cpu and this mobo. HAS anyone got this cpu working on this mobo and did you have any problems that i should know about.. any help is thankfull in advace

Faulty MSI Intel P35 Platinum motherboard

Hi i am building new pc but i seem to have problem with MSI Motherboard.
My PC Specs as follows:
Ocz Game Xstream 600w Power Supply
MSI Intel P35 Platinum motherboard
Intel E6750 Processor
MSI Nvidia 8800GT NX 512mb ddr
Geil Ultra DDR2 2.0GB PC6400 Dual Channel memory kit (2 x 1GB) 800MHz (4-4-4-12) +Aluminium heat spreader
500GB Seagate Barracuda SATA II 300 7200rpm 16mb cache Hard Drive oem
COOLERMASTER case
Now i put everything in place and connect the power supply to the motherboard, however it wouldn't start. I know many of you will say PSU is faulty but its not, i already been on OCZ forums and i have done all the tests including jump start and it works 100%. However when i take off 2 - 4 pin CPU1 and CPU2 connector from motherboard, The pc starts but no sceen, when i put them on the pc won't start. I took it to PC repair shop to have all parts tested, they said motherboard is not working. Did any1else had a same problem, if not please help me resolve this issue. THanks.

I had a problem with my original P35 where the CPU fan control didn't work. Fan would spin, but it never registered speed. CPU would get to 70c at idle. Got a replacement MB and fan speed registered and temp was at about 30c @ idle.
RMA the motherboard. Depending on where you got it from you'll be up and running in 10 days.
OH!!!! VERY IMPORTANT. Do NOT reuse the heatsink compound which is now on the CPU and the heatsink. Scrape it off both, use Isopropyl Alcohol to clean the residue off both. After you get your new MB, apply NEW compound to the top of the CPU. Then seat the heatsink on.

P35 Platinum - regular hangups (fixed)

I've just got my New Year's present(s) ... a P35 Platinum and Intel Core2Quad Q6600 boxed (G0 Stepping)!
I'm using following items from my old system:

Windows XP Professional (Service Pack 2)

Well, I started facing problems the moment I tried installing Windows XP. I connected just the WD Raptor 36GB SATA to the motherboard and set the mode to AHCI. Intel's AHCI BIOS would detect the HDD correctly at POST. But F6 floppy installation failed to find a HDD. I tried with other SATA HDDs but still in vain. So, I set the SATA mode to legacy and eventually formatted the HDD and installed Windows XP (thought I would definitely like to use the SATA HDD in AHCI mode). Windows installation completed successfully.
The problem now is that the system freezes when running any game. Every single game that I run gets stuck. Some games run for about 5-10 mins. before freezing but most hang up within a minute. Except for 3DMark 2001 SE (got a score of 43,998 Marks), all others freeze as well. I think that something might be overheating, though all fans seem to be operating at normal RPMs. Also, playing videos in YouTube sometimes produces a blue screen / restart. This has happened at least 4 times since yesterday.
Any ideas as to where to start troubleshooting from? Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

P35 Platinum Memory???

The book that came with the board states it is only compatible with DDR2 667/800 MHz memory, but if you look on there website in the documentation for that board it has 1066 MHz listed also in the specifications. Can I use 1066 MHz memory (PC8500) 8 GB max??? Someone please reply.

I don't have a P45 chipset, but as you can see above I have a P35 chipset. I had purchased some Corsair Dominator memory PC8500 1066 MHz. A total of 8 GB which is the max for this board. It says nothing about OC'd memory in the specs online for this board just DDR2 667/80/1066 MHz. The only reason I asked was I had originally installed these and was experiencing memory dumps on a fairly frequent occasion, but I think I have contributed that to Trend Micros's Internet Security software. There latest release for this year had been giving me other issues also. I uninstalled, but in the same token went back to the PC6400 800 MHz memory. Now I have recently installed the Corsair memory again and so far so good. I just have to leave the Advanced Dram Timings in the BIOS set to Auto, otherwise if I change anything the system will not boot. CPU-Z reports the timings at 5-7-7-24, and voltage to auto, which sets it to 1.8 volts I believe.This is actually not what the manufacturer says it should be, but it is stable. I also have the CPU Q6600 OC'd to 3.0 GHz. Like I said so far so good and I see a significant improvement from the 800 MHz memory.. Thanks for the info. If I find anything to the contrary I will re post here for all.

P35 Platinum - BIOS 1.C

Anyone had/seen complaints about not being able to install their OS with BIOS 1.C on a P35 Platinum?
I've verified it's not the optical media, multiple versions/discs of Windows fail.
I've verified it's not the optical drive, internal and USB drive fail.
I want to use AHCI, but have also tried IDE, both SATA control methods fail.
Error messages are erratic. They happen at different times during the installation. The messages themselves are always different. Sometimes a blue screen, sometimes one or more error popups from the install utility, sometimes it just freezes.

Ugh , I forgot to increase the voltage to RAM after updating to BIOS 1.C. Apparently even at relaxed/spec clock speed and timings, it will not run at 1.8v. I increased the voltage to 2.2 and everything was back to normal. I should have deducted from the erratic errors that the RAM was the fault. Such an angry, yet relieved feeling once it finally hit me.

the cpu voltage that is in the pix is not right as it seems.
as soon as i started turning the fsb frequency , the voltage vent back to defalt.. and i didnt do it..just did it it self.
and the defalt vpu voltage was 1,0000.
so i tryed that voltage before i did eny oc. and the computer locked good. would also say the heat of the cpu that way dropped some..
could meybe the man who had it befor me mess the voltage ?
but now as i sead it looks good so far. with the oc data above.
so what is next to realy get the compoter checked out?

IMac running hot (21.5-inch, Mid 2011)

I just wanted to give a heads up on my new intel iMac running hot when the monitor is brighter than half way or (newer) games are set to high graphics performance.
I was concerned from the back of the computer feeling very hot so I popped off the front glass and LED screen and took a couple pictures of the logic board where I assume capacitors or on the other side:
You can clearly see where the logic board is getting hot with a little scoring.
to resesolve this issue, I simpy run my games (which are newer ones btw) at lower graphics settings and keep the monitor level below half way. . .
anyway, just thought you should know.

I set the minimum fan speed to 2000, machine is much cooler now. I suppose so long as the fan does not wear out I'll be fine now.
You know picures like you have taken are very worring, iMac is VERY expensive and I expect quality and I don't expect to see what you have. I feel your pain bro...

P35 Platinum and Realtek hd noise sound

I experience this hiss and crackle noise in the sound on my system and I dont know what causes this.
P35 platinum
q6600 processor
4GB ram (2 working ram sticks in right mem slots)
Latest Realtek hd driver installed afaik
Vista 64bit
I want to ask, could this be some IRQ issue? If so, feel free to teach me how to manage this, as this is beyond me.

Ah, apparantly the noise go away if I switch from front end jacks to rear end jacks on my computer cabinet. I'll just see if I can figure this out on my own then.

Which crucial RAM for a new iMac 27" 3.6 Intel Core i5? 1st time buyer

I'm thinking about buying the new iMac 27" 3.6 Intel Core i5 and was thinking about getting it with the standard 4 GB of RAM from the apple store, and then adding another 12 GB for a total of 16 GB of RAM. This is the RAM from crucial:

I have never bought RAM separately before. What happens to the 4 GB that are already in the iMAC? Do you just buy 12 GB and add it to the existing 4 GB, or do you buy 2 packages of 8 GB and install those two after removing the existing 4 GB? Could someone please advise me which RAM packages I need to buy to max out my RAM? Thank you for your assistance!!

That depends on what you plan to upgrade to, if you are going take it all the way to 16GB I'd probably hold onto the old RAM for few weeks just to ensure everything is safe and sound but don't expect to get much for it. If you buy the RAM from OWC they will give you a trade in value for it and that's something to investigate.
Will adding this new RAM void apple care warrantees?
Of course not, you can download a copy of the manual from the Support site and also get a copy of the warranty. In the manual it will have detailed instructions on how to upgrade RAM, Apple wouldn't put that in there if upgrading RAM would impair the warranty. In the warranty it clearly says if any damage is done that would void the warranty. About the only way you do damage is to pour coffee on the RAM slots while you're upgrading or hammering them in with a ball peen.
