P35 platinum RAID Question?

I'm moving from Opteron to quad core intel... and a friend of mine warned me of a few things...
First: Intel keeps part of its processor design to itself so that its chipsets bring more performance than others' chipsets like Nvidia....? so it's wise to go with intel chipset?
Scond: Intel chipsets have strange way of dealing with SATA RAID being emulated from IDE????? with same speed as IDE... does this apply to the new chipset p35????
Which is a better and more powerful board to get for a QX6700 processor: P6N diamond or P35 platinum? putting into consideration that the system will include 3 sata ii hdds in RAID 5 configuration???

There is no genuine lead here between chipset performance of Intel, Nvidia, ATI and even SiS. Of course, in most benchmark cases, you will see the new P35 Intel chipset is leading in most benchmark. But woulld you really feel that difference? For the LAN, maybe. For the RAID performance, maybe. But for RAM and stuff, probably not.
So, just pick the right, most stable board with the most stable chipset, and most stable BIOS.

  • P35 Platinum RAID initialization?

So far I'm happy with this new mobo and chipset. Overclocks with ease and I haven't had any lockups. One problem has tainted it for me so far. A picture tells a thousand words, so here it is:
The complication I'm having had is that whenever I boot after the PC being cold for a while, the Intel Matrix Storage Manager option ROM doesn't detect my RAID array on the first try. Oddly enough, if I let it proceed into Windows, the OS still sees the drives and lets me access them and run programs off them fine. I've only had 2 BSODs happen since getting this computer running, and both of those happened after letting the system boot with the RAID ROM not listing the array as active. Thus, I have attributed those crashes to some kind of conflict with that.
Now what I do is watch to see if the RAID lists correctly and, if not, I pop into the BIOS and save my settings to make it POST again before allowing Windows to load. No problems with that method, but I heard that the new BIOS version includes fixes for SATA RAID support. Does anyone know if this is one of the problems addressed/anyone else have this happen? I'm hesitant to just go for the BIOS update without knowing it will fix my problem.

As you already mentioned, the latest BIOS (v1.1) includes an update for the SATA RAID firmware.  So there is a good chance your problem can be fixed with the new BIOS.

    - Support boot sequence device up to 12 devices.
    - Update LAN boot ROM version.
    - Update CPU Micro Code.
    - Update SATA Raid firmware version.
    Another question:
As I can see, the RAID-BIOS lists all drives and their status seperatly. What happens if your Raptors are configured as non-RAID disks?  If they are listed as offline in non-RAID mode as well, the problem might be slightly different.  In this case this may not be a genuine RAID problem, but a general mismatch of BIOS initialization time and hard drive spin-up time.
Is there any WD Tool that allows you to modify the spin-up behaviour of your WD Raptors?

  • P35 Platinum memory question.

    Hello!
Im new on this forum and I have a little question. I have two Corsair TWIN2X 6400 DDR2, 2048MB CL5 Kit w/two matched CM2X1024A-6400 Dimm's and just want to now wich slots they should be in. I currently have them in slot 1 (green) and 3 (orange). But I have heard that when using two ddrmem they should be placed in the right way for the best stability.
    regards
    Nav

ok, thanks. Then I don't have to wonder about that anymore

I have seen this 2 holes placed at copper passive cooler system, just besides the memory, and at a height allowing to put a 80mm fan (I guess but not tried) just almost "touching" memory modules....
For me, it would be great since my Q6600 CPU use to be at nearly 50º with zalman 9700, and motherboard gives 45º usually...... memory is very hot... 4 modules of 2.0v kingstom hyperx 4-4-4-12 for 4Gbs........
Someone tried to put there a fan????????
Are these holes specially there to do that way??????
If you put a fan there, you would do it extracting air from memory modules, or just pushing air to them?????
    Thanks!

    2 screw holes? got picture?
isn't those 2 screw holes to mount the extended heatsink beside the DIMM?
    mmm.......
I refer to this "supposed to be" screw holes, as they seems it to me at least...
    http://img170.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screwholesef4.jpg
You talk about a "extended heatsink beside DIMM"..... I cannot find any documentation about an extended heatsink anywhere (maybe a bit blind,   so, if you were so kind, can you please tell me something about it or maybe give a simple link for it?? I wish to refrigerate better my memory modules and chipset with my zalman 9700, and this holes just over there without any purpose (for me) are getting me crazy...
Also I tried to give airflow to the memory modules through an 80mm fan situated on the thermaltake shark chasis (Mc Giver wouldn´t do it better) and the result is Zalman 9700 is taking all the air from the fresh airflow of the new fan besides, resulting in cooler CPU, but hotter memory and chipset.... pfffffffffffffffff............

  • PCIe 16x and 4x on P35 Platinum questions

I have a P35 Platinum system with a Q6600 processor O.C. to 3.4 gHz.  I've got an 8800GTS card in the PCIe 16x slot.  I tried to add a specialized HD video capture card into the PCIe 4x slot and the system would not post.  What is the deal with the PCIe 4x and 1x slots "sharing"???  The HD capture card company (AJA) are convinced this is the problem.  I am too.  Is there ANY possible way to shut off this sharing?  Why is it there?
Also, every time I turn on the system, it briefly starts, stops, and then goes through the complete boot process.  What's up with that?
Thanks for any help on these two questions.
    Stuart

Not all PCI-E cards will be backward compatible to all PCI-E slots.
Usually the x1/x4 PCI-E slots are meant for SATA cards, RAID cards or sound cards.
x8 and x16 are usually meant for Video cards.
You have to check what slot can you capture card runs on.

  • Pls help! I cleared CMOS now I've lost RAID: P35 platinum

    Hi all,
Last night I had a problem with my PC not reading a CD. I read on another forum that it may be a problem with my CD drive not being recognised and it recommended pressing the 'clear CMOS' button then rebooting the system.
However, I have now lost RAID. It boots fine on one drive but lists the other as simply another drive. I went back into the BIOS and re-activated RAID, but when I do this the operating system fails to boot and gives me an error message saying:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
    <windows root> system32\config\system
I have backed everything up while the machine is good, but would dearly not want to have to re-install everything again!
Is there any way I can recover it to the way it was before?
I did a search a found this thread, not entirely sure if it's the same problem:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=35930.0
    Cheers,
    Zap
    Details of my system:
Mobo: MSI P35 Platinum 1333MHZ FSB, Processor: Intel Q6600 2.4GHZ, 4GB ram, HDD: 2 x 500GB Samsung in RAID (mirrored)
    Operating System:XP SP3

Ok guys, here are the further details: (BTW triangle, it's RAID1).
In the BIOS here are some of the settings i've applied:
    On chip ATA devices:
    PCI IDE busmaster = Enabled
    RAID mode = RAID
The boot sequence is set to:
    1. CD ROM
    2. One of the HDD's (2 are listed as being available)
    3. Disabled
Now, it boots OK to the Intel Storage Manager page. If I press CTRL-I to open the configuration utility I get the following details:
    RAID 1
    ID = 0
    Name = Volume 0
    Status = Normal
    Bootable = Yes
So if I exit, it goes to attempt to boot XP. However before I get any sign of life from XP I get this error message:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
    \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.
Now if I set RAID mode = IDE in the BIOS the system will boot normally on one HDD. At the moment I can open explorer and see that the 2 HDDs are listed as Local Disc (C:) and Local Disc (E:)'.
I checked the SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM on both the HDD's and found a difference in the file size between the two- I'm guessing because I'm currently using one disc and ignoring the other.
    SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM file sizes:
    Local Disc (C:) = 40.9MB (41.1MB size on disc)
    Local Disc (E:) = 40.6MB (40.8MB size on disc)
So I assume because the two files don't match XP treats them as being corrupt when in RAID 1 mode.
Can I simply copy the SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM file from one disc to the other? What about the other items on the disc that don't match considering that other files have changed aside from this one?
Should I attempt to copy the entire C drive to the E drive....?????
    Thanks again guys,
    Cheers Zap.

  • P35 platinum, memory and videocard questions

    Hi folks.
I recently had a problem with an Asus P5K board in the sense that it doesn't allow use of 8gb of ram (despite saying it does) when you use 4x 2gb sticks. I want to replace this board with a P35 platinum but first I want to make sure my geil 8gb kit (4x 2gb DDR2 6400 sticks) will work (I'll be runnnig windows xp x64).
Also I have an XFX Geforce 8800 Ultra which has quite a big cooler, I read in some reviews of the board that the southbridge heatsink is too high for cards with big coolers like that to fit neatly. My question is will it still work? Can I screw the card in or do I have to live in fear of it plummetting out of the slot?
Thanks in advance for your answers.

I've tried 4 x 2GB OCZ DDR2 memory sticks. P35 Platinum detects 8GB main memory but shows usage memory as only 4GB out of 8GB. I've emailed MSI helpline if they can help out.

  • P35 Platinum: I have to press the power button multiple times to start

    Hello fellow MSI customers,
as written in the subject, I have a problem with starting my PC. When I press the power button, the computer powers on, but there is no output to the screen. In fact, my LCD stays in standby mode. I can hear the fans running, so something is going on. According to the LEDs on the mainboard, it is a memory problem.
Now I turn the computer off, using the power button (have to hold it for a few seconds). When off, I start again and everything runs as it should.
After starting, I ran memtest86 multiple times without any errors. I ran a few games, compiled some programs, installed Vista 64bit, Linux, all without any crashes or hangups. It is just the starting that makes problems. After booting it is very stable.
Seeing that it could be a memory problem, I brought another pair of memory, just to be sure. I couldn't reproduce the problem on that day! Any type of memory I put in (the one before, or the newly brought home) the computer always started on the press of the button. So I thought, OK, maybe they were not seated correctly. But, alas, two days later it is again only starting by pressing the power button three times.
     What I tried:
     1. Boot using only 1 piece of memory stick
     2. Boot using only 1 piece of memory, but different one
     3. Use another pair of memory   <-  worked, but on that day it also worked using my original memory
     4. Disconnected everything except graphics card, to make sure it is not a power supply issue (minimized power usage)
     5. Tried all of the above with a different processor
     6. Used another power supply
    Any other ideas?
    Here are my specs:
    MSI P35 platinum
    Core2 Q6600
    Nvidia 7900GT
    4GB V-Data DDR2 800MHz      <--- I think this is the problem, any experiences?
    Enermax Liberty 400W
a few other things (HDDs, XFi, DVD-RW)
By the way, how can I boot from an external DVD-RW? It doesn't show in the menu when I press F11 (boot menu).
Thank you for any help, muro
And just to let a bit of steam off:
    1. I had major problems with the RAID controller (not MSI fault, rather intel) - I put two disks into a RAID 0, then RAID 1 and they always failed after a few boots - member missing on both disks. I was getting angry, so I put them as normal (non RAID) disks and everything is fine since, although no RAID.
    2. Installing anything except windows with an IDE DVD-RW is very hard. It took me ages until I got Ubuntu booting (there are guides on the net, google is your friend), and much longer to get grub (boot loader) working. Long story short - if you have multiple disks, use the Linux disk as the bootable, do NOT put grub on the disk where Vista is installed.
    3. I have no idea, how to update the BIOS, if I had to. I'm using 1.1 that came on the board. I use 64bit Vista and Linux, none of which is supported to upgrade the BIOS. Any hints how to do it (if I needed to)?

    Hello,
now today is the day I've finally received my replacement board. The good news first - it DOES work! Yepeeee!
     Now some more information:
The jmicron controller seems to be missing - a screen with something about "Marvel" is shown before the intel raid screen. However, it is only visible for a fraction of second, so I cannot read it. I think it detects my IDE DVD-RW so I'm quite certain it's the replacement for jmicron. I won't miss it - it took me ages to install Linux with the jmicron controller.
The problem where I had to restart the computer sometimes because it didn't even post (RAM error) is gone. It boots just fine now.
I had an extremely long first post - about a minute, but after that it boots very fast now.
anyway, regarding some questions around here - the manual states MSI recommends using an 350W power supply. My 400W is more than enough. Please note - it is an Enermax, not one bundled with a cheap case. My cheap RAM sticks also work very well now. I did try them on different boards before, so now I know I just had a faulty board.
In the end, I can only say this: This is my 3rd board already and it's the first one that works well. As the hardware changed, I presume there were major issues with this board that lead them to make a new revision. What is strange, though, is that the revision is still 1.1, as were my previous two. I pity everybody who had the same problems as I did, but I can now say that I'm very happy about the board now.
     Cheers, muro

  • Cannot get out of standby - P35 Platinum

    Hello everyone,
I recently build myself a new rig, featuring a nice and shiny new P35 Platinum board. Here are the system specs:
    MSI P35 Platinum - BIOS version 1.4
    OCZ GameXStream SLI/Active 600W
    Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4Ghz overclocked to 2.88 (FSB 320)
    2x 1GB 1066Mhz PC-8500 Kingston HyperX RAM (5-5-5-15) no overclock there
    2x Seagate Barracuda 320GB in RAID 0
Sapphire Radeon HD2900XT, 512M etc etc
    Some IDE NEC DVD+/-RW Drive
Here comes the problem. I put my system on standby, and down it went. I restarted it once, booted into Windows Vista Home Premium, 32bit without a problem. Then I turned it off again and went away for a few hours. I came back, started the machine and... nothing. At least not on the screen: it tells me that it's not receiving a signal. All the fans are spinning, and I hear a normal, single post beeb. I opened the case, and saw led3 was constantly shining. I don't know if this was the case before the problem turned up, I never bothered to look at it. The status leds on the board have shown me varying stuff, I got all greens once, and I believe it booted to windows on that occasion. I also got it green-red-red-green once, but that pattern didn't come back. I tried to clear cmos with the button, system powered down etc etc (which didn't help), and now I'm getting green-green-red-green (searching for a floppy drive), and it's not booting to windows anymore. Which seems logical after clearing cmos, because in standard bios settings, the Intel RAID controller is disabled, so it can't find Windows anymore And now the big question... how on earth can I reset the board so that it doesn't think its standby anymore, without any display support? It seems unlikely there's a defect in the graphics card or the psu doesn't supply enough juice; the rig ran just fine the other day (also on heavy gaming/video processing).
Please help me out, o great MSI forum experts
    Juul

It's really strange. On one hand, the status leds indicate the system boots normally, it even booted into Vista once (heard the vista starting sound), but on the other hand, there's NOTHING on the display. Everything seems to work just fine, except for the fact that I'm not seeing anything before the problem arose, I booted several times with the memory installed. I experienced absolutely no problems at all. I also tried to boot with only one stick, didn't solve the problem. But I will try it with a 6400 stick. I just wish I'd never ever put the stupid thing on standby. I'm thinking of an S1 / S3 problem myself. Is it possible the videocard still thinks the entire system is on S3 standby and therefore refuses to output anything to the screen? I didn't adjust any of the settings in the power management section of the bios when I still had visual access to it, by the way.

    NFIXIT

There are three possible solutions to solve the situation:
    1) Install a processor supported by the current BIOS Version to be able to properly turn on your system and then update the BIOS to the latest Version to be able to use your E8400/E0 (update should be done from DOS only).
    2) Ask in a local computer shop or contact your reseller to do the same thing for you.
    3) Connect an internal floppy drive and a PS/2 Keyboard and then try to force the system into AMI BIOS Recovery Mode.  Instructions:
    Quote
Rename the desired AMI BIOS file to AMIBOOT.ROM and save it on a floppy disk. e.g. Rename A7345IMS.1xx to AMIBOOT.ROM
Insert this floppy disk in the floppy drive. Turn On the system and press and hold Ctrl-Home to force update. It will read the AMIBOOT.ROM file and recover the BIOS from the A drive.
When 4 beeps are heard you may remove the floppy disk and restart the computer.
Even though the AMI BIOS Recovery Procedure is the only chance you have to solve the situation without installing a different processor, it does not work in all cases.  However, as it is an easy procedure, it is at least worth a try.

but now i would like to get a bit mroe out of it...
i  have newer done this kind of job before so bear with mee..
i have read a lot on the internet and have looked in the manual  for the motherboard.
but i realy dont understand eny of it.. all the numbers and different things to change in bios.
so my reading up on it realy dindt work..
so i ask you,how to go forward...
thanks all good people. for eny replies.

  • AHCI and RAID question

Hi, my pc is a :
msi p35 platinum version (mobo v1.2)
    Q6600  GO
    2X WD 250 sata2 hdds
    3 X DVD-RW
    1X Nvidia GEEFROCE GT260
(I`m on the  lastest Bios version from the live update site)
    4GB corsair XMS2 ddr2
    Running Win XP home 32bit
Basicly i have a query, ORIGINALY when i changed 2 x Hdds about 6mnths ago i set up as RAID 0, but on the way to getting that up and running i had the `devices scan b4 srart-up`   dectecting drives as AHCI.... but i didnt take much notice of this seeting as i meant to ser it up as RAID, LOL
NOW, shortly later i wanna try a ahci setup `non-raid` and cannot get the mobo 2 dectect as ahci, now i have always had 2 sliptream the `F6` flopy drivbers in for my intel raid controller....
as far as i can c theres only  2 suitable drivers for the  board on the floppy anyhow, the `ICH9R sata achi controller` and the `SATA-RAID ICH8R/ICH9R`, alll the other are for different controllers.
i built this a few weeks ago and dint realise it wa sall in UDMA5 mode(slow as assholes !)
now IF in the Bios i set the `RAID MODE AS AHCI` (because with an array defined, the sata only mode kicks in (AHCI)), i used ahci contrller driver frome floppy, NOT `SATA-RAID ICH8R/ICH9R`
i assume this is ok as it is ahci mode i want NOT raid, BUT do i use the RAID drive because in Bios its all under RAID MODE=ahci   ???    (they `should` be sperate really )
BUT I STILL GET IDE MODE IN HDD SCAN AT START-UP
i am connected on ports 3 and 4 I`m not the jmicron thing, i know about that )
i tried all different bios setting etc, but cant seem to get hdd to show as ahci like they did once befrore, the ONLY difference between now and then, is NOW i on a newest bios version
    Help !! LOL

edit: i have  been trying to find any indication that NCQ is active on the hdd, but cannot see it anywhere in device manager etc etc.... ( because NCQ is ONLY supported by ACCI mode, ye
    ah ? )
it does give the option to enable disk write caching on the hdd(currentley OFF) what mode is hdd caching avaliable in ?
erm, i was looking on the toms harware site and theres a list of all the Intel ICHR controllers, i`m assuming the msi p35 platimum is the  `Intel® ICH9 4 Port SATA AHCI Controller - 2923` version  (msi site just says ich9r)  what is the  - 2923 bit about?
    thanks.

  • [MSI P35 Platinum] Graphics Card Slot

    Hello,
I just bought the MSI 560 GTX graphics card. My motherboard is MSI P35 Platinum so i was wondering if i can place the graphics card in the 2nd PCI-E slot or this could occure problems. This is my motherboard:
so my question is: can i put the graphics card in the YELLOW slot? Cause it won't fit in the upper PCI... Thanks

Quote from: Jack on 03-September-11, 19:12:09
Why doesn't it fit?  It should fit without problems.
Because of the I/O controller (i think this is it...)
Quote from: Jack on 03-September-11, 19:12:09
You can do that, however, in that slot, the video card will only get x4 lanes assigned to it (instead of x16 lanes in the primary PCI-Express slot).
And what difference does this make?

  • P35 Platinum Restart-Hangup problem

Hi, happy new year to all.
Well,  yesterday I bought some PC parts and did an upgrade but I'm facing a lot of problems....random re-starts and hangups about every 45min  !!!

A few questions regarding your current setup:
    1) How are your system temperatures (CPU core temps, GPU temps, system temp etc).  Use SpeedFan/Everest/Core Temp to monitor your system temperatures.
    2) Is DOT disabled in BIOS?  If not, please disable DOT immediately and see if there is any change in system behaviour.
    3) Is MSI Dual Core Center installed/running when this happens?  If yes, uninstall that tool for further tests.
    4)
Try to loosen RAM performance settings for testing:
    - reduce memory freqency to 667 MHz in BIOS
    - manually set RAM timings to 5-5-5-18 in BIOS
    - set memory voltage to 1.9/1.95/2V for testing
    5) Have you installed the Vista Patch for more than 3Gb of RAM?
    1) CPU: 31C 34C 31C 31C; GPU: 60C; System: 45C (speedfan). Here in Panama ambient temp is somewhere between 25-31C
2)Yes DOT is disabled all time
3)I never installed dual core center
    4)Currently is running @800
5)I downloaded the patch and it says that doesn't apply to my system (Vista 64bit)
I found that when disabling the x-fi, the system runs OK. Is there any issues with that x-fi or 64bit driver? I ask because previously I was running vista 32bit with that same soundcard and everything was OK.
    Thanks for the replies!

  • P35 Platinum and MSI 8600 GT problem

I have a problem with the computer locking up. It will do it on certain web sites, clicking around in Media player and other programs. I tried everything I could think of. Finally I Got an 8400 video card locally and everything is fine. My question is, since the 8600 GT gets all of it's power from the PCIE slot could it be a voltage problem? If so, I see no way of increasing the PCIE voltage in the bios for this MB.
Any ideas before I send this card back?
    Thanks,
    Bill
    Msi P35 Platinum Motherboard
    Core2Duo 6850
    2 gig Corsair XMS2 6400C4D Dominator Memory
OCZ Stealth X Stream 600 Watt Powersupply

It locked up with default bios settings and no overclocking. I didn't overclock the video card at all. I tried everything. Since I put in a temporary 8400GTS I have the processor overclocked to 3.3gig and everything is fine. Could the 8400 need less power than the 8600GT and if so is there a way to increase the voltage on the 16X PCIE slot? This is a MSI MB and MSI Video card so I would expect them to work together.
