P35 Platinum Restart-Hangup problem

Hi, happy new year to all.
Well, yesterday I bought some PC parts and did an upgrade but I'm facing a lot of problems....random re-starts and hangups about every 45min !!!
My specs are:
-Q6600 G0 Stepping
-MSI P35 Platinum
-GSKILL DDR2 1000 8GB (4x2GB)
-eVGA 8800 GTS 640
-Thermaltake toughpower 650W (W0104RU)
-LG DVDRW Sata
-WD 500GB RE2 sata
-Seagate 250GB N35 sata
-Maxtor 160GB sata
-Soundblaster X-FI fatal1ty
-Vista Enterprise 64bit
The system isn't overclocked, all settings are default and bios is 1.6. Any help will be appreciated!

5)I downloaded the patch and it says that doesn't apply to my system (Vista 64bit)
I found that when disabling the x-fi, the system runs OK. Is there any issues with that x-fi or 64bit driver? I ask because previously I was running vista 32bit with that same soundcard and everything was OK.

I've just got my New Year's present(s) ... a P35 Platinum and Intel Core2Quad Q6600 boxed (G0 Stepping)!

Well, I started facing problems the moment I tried installing Windows XP. I connected just the WD Raptor 36GB SATA to the motherboard and set the mode to AHCI. Intel's AHCI BIOS would detect the HDD correctly at POST. But F6 floppy installation failed to find a HDD. I tried with other SATA HDDs but still in vain. So, I set the SATA mode to legacy and eventually formatted the HDD and installed Windows XP (thought I would definitely like to use the SATA HDD in AHCI mode). Windows installation completed successfully.
The problem now is that the system freezes when running any game. Every single game that I run gets stuck. Some games run for about 5-10 mins. before freezing but most hang up within a minute. Except for 3DMark 2001 SE (got a score of 43,998 Marks), all others freeze as well. I think that something might be overheating, though all fans seem to be operating at normal RPMs. Also, playing videos in YouTube sometimes produces a blue screen / restart. This has happened at least 4 times since yesterday.
Any ideas as to where to start troubleshooting from? Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

P35 Platinum and eSata problem

I recently bought a WD My Book Premium ES 500GB and when i try to connect it via eSata cable, it doesn't work.My system can't recognize the drive, it doesn't show up in BIOS screen where HDD's are. I tried 2 different eSata cables but nothing.Via USB2 connection it works fine.
My system Specs are: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600,MSI P35 Platinum Mobo with latest BIOS update 1.1, 2GB RAM DDR2, Asus X1950XT VGA,Tagan 500W PSU.
I tried both eSata ports at the Back Panel of my motherboard but none worked with My Book.
Is there a problem with My Book? or is a compatibility issue?

Make sure you have set the switch or whatever your external drive has, to E-Sata mode. I'm sure you probably already did that but just sayin!
I have a different board AND different external drive but after playing with my setup for a whole day trying to get the esata to work, it finally dawned on me that I had not set the switch from USB to Esata (no wisecracks please
As soon as I did the switch, the Esata started working just fine.

Problem installing MSI P35 Platinum & MSI NX8600GT & windows XP

I just bought my MSI P35 platinum mobo and MSI NX8600GT graphics card.
Was trying to install XP on it. During installation, got the following error message :
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

Very slow restart P35 Platinum

I recently built my system and all seems to work great, except for restart time to Windows.
What I have: P35 Platinum Combo, Quad Q6600 CPU, 2X 2GB Transcend Dual Channel DDR2, 1 Maxtor, 3 Seagate 500GB sata drives in a Raid10 array , Samsung sata optic drive, PC Power & Cooling 750w PSU, Not sure of bios Version but at MSI Web site the bios check said I had the latest version. Windows XP Pro sp2
What it is doing, on a cold boot it will boot into Windows very fast, no problem, but when I started loading software I noticed on the restarts from Windows takes forever. the boot seems to hang up or I should say stall on the detecting the sata optic drive. Once it does it proceeds to load Windows normally, This stall is about 2.5 mins in duration, I do have Quick Boot inabled in the Bios,
Any thoughts on this?

Thats what I thought about doing too, but then thought there may be another way of doing this, guess not. I will check around and see if this has been done by anyone else and no bad things happened. I mean its not THAT much of a big deal now that all my software is loaded and rebooting is not done that often.Widows automatic updates are done in th dark hours and by th tim I get to the pc it hs finished the reboot process. ....But that said stuff like this bugs me and lurks in the corner of my head til I have to fix it! What I don't understand is why it does not demonstrate this on a cold boot if the machine is turned off completely and thn turne back on it just zipps through the boot process ???

Help P35 platinum problems

Hi, I'm new in the forum.
I have bought a p35 platinum about three weeks ago, it is fantastic and I like it very much, but I have some problems with it.
If I list them, could you help me??
My complete configuration is:
mb: msi p35 platinum;
processor: Q6600 (without O.C.);
ram 4x1gb team elite ram 800mhz;
video: ati 2600xt 512mb gddr3;
. At first, the motherload's bios colour was black, but suddenly it became classic blue. Now it's blue yet. Is it normal?
. When I turn on the Pc it a emits "beep"(that should be a sign of bad operation of the AMI bios).
. The bios read 3.25gb of ram, but I've installed 4gb.
. dual core center inform me that the CPU fan is 0, while, it goes on spinning. (it happens often)
. A lot of programs, like Sandra or Everest 2007, read the chipset ICH9 instead of ICH9R.
. Live Update crash when it looks for bios versions.
. After installing the bios 1.3 the start is more slowly, besides there is a screened where I can read the marvel component. unfortunately I can read just this, then I will try to do a screen.
PS:
Despite of I had this problems, I go on loving my magic motherload. I hope you will help me, because I don't know what to do.
My O.s. is Windows vista Ultimate.

Problem OC P35 Platinum + 8GB of CL4 memory with Q6600

Hi all!
I just lost that 1000 words post from power outage, so bear with me if I'm more direct to the point.
System:
P35 Platinum BIOS 1.9B1 (Vcore:1.375V, VTT: 1.30V, NB:1.550V, SB: 1.8V) 417MHz FSB x 8 = 3336MHz
Q6600 G0 2.4GHz @ 3.336GHz (42*C idle 68*C load)
OCZ Memory (OCZ2RPR800C44GK x 2 : AKA CL4 HPC Reapers) PC2-6400 @ 800MHz (4-4-4-15) OC @ 960MHz (5-5-5-18) VDimm: 2.2V
Geforce 8800GT 512 MB DDR3 (680MHz/1800MHz/1050MHz)
OS: Vista Ultimate x64
I try to push those memory sticks to 1000MHz. To do this, 2 ways I know: up FSB to 500MHz with 1:1 ratio or change ratio to 5:6 + up FSB to 417MHz. I tried both and here are the results:
Test the CPU OC = FSB: 417MHz x 8 = 3336MHz & RAM 834MHz (1:1) = 24 hours prime95 stable (small FFT)
Test the memory = FSB: 417MHz x 7 = 2919MHz & RAM 1000MHz ratio 1:1.2 = 24 hours memtest86+ v2.01 AND 24 hours prime95 stable (blend test)
Test them together = FSB: 417MHz x 8 = 3336MHz & RAM 1000MHz ratio 1:1.2 = memtest86+ stable (20 hours) but not prime95 stable. At those settings, SuperPI 32M would finish only 50% of the time (not exact in round)
I tried upping NB to 1.6V (Afraid to fry it), tried upping VTT FSB (What does that do...) to 1.4V-1.45V : no luck.
I know that below 1.55V my 8GB setup is unstable (crashed prime blend test at 18 hours...)
The other option is now trying with higher FSB. All those tests were done with 1.9B1 BIOS. At 500MHz FSB, the board wouldn't even POST. I then flashed the BIOS to 1.9B2 with success! I can now POST and boot with 500MHz FSB! I cannot load windows though which leaves me short of my goal. I tried some more conservative speed (470MHz FSB) and succeeded in loading Vista. Had a hard time thought, at that FSB speed, Vista was crawling and CPU and memory benches in Everest were about 50% lower than last stable benches. Something was wrong.
I was then wondering ways to boot Vista with 500MHz stable or make my two stable overclocks work together...
I read a post from someone stating that MSI told him to use performance BIOS P09 because OCing 8GB was easier with that BIOS. I did so. I could not boot in Vista (without OC, at default settings) because of nvidia driver (was able to boot in safe mode). I also read in that thread that BIOS P09 had problems with G92 videocards... I wish I could read German (or danish, not sure) because (save the thread I mentioned) the only forums talking about performance BIOS are German MSI forums...
I also read that BIOS after 1.3 are not good for OCing because of bad voltage regulation. I would flash back to 1.3
but the Q6600 Kentsfield is not supported before 1.6.
So I'm asking help at the same time from this board and User mod BIOS, was not sure to which board my thread would belong.
Thank you for you suggestions and/or advices concerning performance BIOS.

P.S. Oh yeah! I also set my hardware OC settings jumpers to 333MHz which supposedly increase FSB stability... phew... I thought I would be direct to the point....

Well, it seems that the CS4 settings where exactly the rated speed for the GEIL Ultra Dual Channel modules, it's just that the (100% safe) pre-programmed SPD speeds are slower than the official rated timings. GEIL tells about that with all of their newer products, so timings I entered where not illegal for the modules.

P35 Platinum rebooting problem

I have just registered at MSI Forums, as i have quite strange problem with my PC and i need help :azn:
My specs:
Motherboard : MSI P35 Platinum, bios ver1.9
CPU : Intel Core 2 Duo e6600 coolde with Thermalright Ultra 120a + Zalman 120mm fan
Memory: Mushkin XP2-6400 2 GB CL4-4-3-10
VGA : Inno3D 8800gts 512 with Accelero s2 rev2 + 2 Silverstone 90mm fans
HDD : Seagate 160GB SATA
Optical : Liteon DVDRW LDW-851S
PSU : Tagan TG430-U22 (i am running it at 'combined rails' mode, which has 28A rating for the 12v rail-information from the sticker)
I also have 3 120mm fans mounted in case
I have Windows XP SP2 installed
I took attempt to overclock my cpu and memory, and i managed to get 3.4ghz for cpu and 972mhz for memory (486FSB ; CPU Multipliter 7 ; RAM timings 5,5,5,15 ; RAM voltage 2,0v ; CPU voltage 1.4125v ; VTT FSB voltage AUTO ; NB voltage 1.45v ; SB I/O power 1.8v ; SB core power 1.15v), i am able to run Orthos Blend test (stressing cpu and memory) for about 8 hours (so it's pretty stable I think)
So, let's get to the point:
I am able to run my PC flawlessly all day long, but when i try to turn it on next day, it keeps rebooting itself for few minutes (it turns for about 10 seconds but the screen stays black, then it turns off and turns on again.....LEDS keep showing red/red/green/red indicating memory problem) and finally boots with 'overclocking failed' information.............i get to the bios, change ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, save settings (or not save..it doesn't matter at all) and then it boots and loads Windows no problem.......... what the heck is wrong?? Is it memory problem? Or maybe PSU? (I was using it in my previous PC)

P35 Platinum Problem

Update:
Have not got standard memory yet so tried other options...
Replaced floppy drive with one that I verified was working, but no change so floppy drive is ok. Another possibility ruled out.
Reseated memory, floppy cable, graphics card multiple times, no result.
Changed FSB jumper to 333 setting, no result. Changes back to 200, result!!! Booted to bios config multiple times. Some times I got 4 red leds though, in which case the system stopped and rebooted. Then booted to bios again. I decided to try again to reflash the bios to 1.1 using ctrl-home keys. This time it worked. Verified bios is now v1.1.
Started getting cmos errors though. The bios gave me the option to reset to default values, when booting. I did this, and rebooted. The system stopped working again then, showing two green lights, two red. :(
I reset the FSB jumpers to 333, turn system on/off, switched back to 200. Again, I found I could now boot to bios again.
This is as far as I have got. Havenot been able to boot to OS yet. Any advice appreciated.
Starting to think this is not just a bios issue.... :(

Before my last post, I had previously flashed the bios back to the original bios which originally worked for me (1.1, the version which came with the machine, got it from the web site), but I ended up with the same problems. Last thing I did that night, was flash the bios to 1.4b... bios, but seeming same problems reproduced.
I was ready to return the motherboard on Saturday but curiosity got to me so I decided to follow Bosskillers advice and try out some other memory. Not that I doubted Bosskiller but this meant I had to bite the bullet and go buy some vanilla memory. Another 128 euros less in my pocket, after replacing my PSU also
Before installing the memory, i decided to try to again boot the PC (using bios 1.4b... beta) with the high perf memory. Didn't work the first couple of times, then it did! OS booted even, first time in a week. Occasionally (30% of boots) I got the four red lights followed on the next boot by an error messages highlighted in red saying the previous overclocking settings prevented the machine from booting, did I want to keep current settings or reset them. In each case, I kept the setting and simply rebooted.
I then noticed I had not switch the FSB jumper to the 266 setting. Not sure if this matters, as I though bios automatically detects / sets the correct FSB setting in any case. This seemed to improve matters a little.
I then changed the memory, and things improved further. I am now able to boot most of the time, only seeing the 4 red lights when I cold boot the machine after it has not been used for a while (this happens 100% of the time). While running, it seems stable. If i do mess about a little, and constantly hit the reset or main power switch on/off every 10 secs, I will occasionally see the four red lights, or 1G1R2G so I avoid this
Will run the memtest tools you suggested. I am not convinced the high perf memory is bad yet. Will try out some more tests on it at a later date though. The cold boot issue sort of suggests a PSU issue to me but I am unsure. In any case, my Antec power PSU is not in yet , but will install when I get it and hope it resolves the residual issues.
Much appreciate all the help from folk, especially Bosskiller. It has been interesting, I have learned quite a bit I believe.

P35 Platinum and MSI 8600 GT problem

I have a problem with the computer locking up. It will do it on certain web sites, clicking around in Media player and other programs. I tried everything I could think of. Finally I Got an 8400 video card locally and everything is fine. My question is, since the 8600 GT gets all of it's power from the PCIE slot could it be a voltage problem? If so, I see no way of increasing the PCIE voltage in the bios for this MB.
Any ideas before I send this card back?

It locked up with default bios settings and no overclocking. I didn't overclock the video card at all. I tried everything. Since I put in a temporary 8400GTS I have the processor overclocked to 3.3gig and everything is fine. Could the 8400 need less power than the 8600GT and if so is there a way to increase the voltage on the 16X PCIE slot? This is a MSI MB and MSI Video card so I would expect them to work together.

P35 platinum crazy problem

we're building 2 workstations with this components:

kingston memories (667,800,1066)
hdd western 320gb
psu coolermaster real power 700w
nvidia quadro 1500
now:
with 700w cooler master psu system wont boot or post, fan start about 3 sec then quit
no beeps, no leds.
with others psu's EVEN CHEAP 450W OR 500W system post FINE!!!
AND THE 700W COOLER MASTER IS WORKING PERFECTLY! cause it works with 10/20 other machines.
we've updated every kind of bios release
we've switched 667,800,1066 memory from kingston, a-data o buffalo
we've unplugged all peripherals
so. any1 ideas?
the problem is the same with all 2 mobos

hi all, thanks for posts. we already switched to enermax psus and everything is going just fine.
but the question about cooler master psu still remain...we've done some electric tests, but we didnt find any ground problems...regard the 12V rail...an "abnormal behaviours" is a *very* generic definition of the problem, so we dont understand where we have to look...
It would be nice to find where really is the problem, so we really can say they products are "mediocres" and feel free of suggest them or not...this way product judgment can be based on real technical facts and not personal opinions...

P35 Platinum - 4GB Problem

Hi guys, hope you can help me.
First things first, my system is as follows -
Intel Q6600 Processor - B3 Stepping
MSI P35 Platinum - BIOS flashed to 1.3
4 x Transcend 1Gb DDR2-800 Modules (5-5-5) (All Identical)
Gigabyte nVidia 8600GTS 256Mb
420Watt generic PSU - 3.3v/22Amp 5v/36Amp 12v/18Amp (It is also brand new)
The problem:
Boots fine with with up to 3 RAM modules installed. But refuses to POST with all 4 installed and hangs with the post code indicating the memory detection test (Red Green Red Red). I have removed and reseated all of the Modules, and tried them all in different slots to no avail. I have also tried unplugging all hard drives and DVD drives to see if it would get through POST, but this did not help.
I dont believe its actually a faulty RAM module as removing ANY of the modules will fix the problem, allowing me to boot with 3 DIMMS installed. And the system boots fine with each module installed by itself.
I have also changed the RAM timings from Auto to manual and fiddled with the timings, and gone back to "By SPD". Which did nothing.
Any thought and help would be appreciated.

What is the stock memory voltage? It should be listed on the sticks. Make sure you set this voltage in the BIOS.

Return it and get something with more Amps on the 12v rail. 18A on the 12v just won't cut it.

P35 Platinum Problems

Hello everyone.
I'm having a very similar problem to inucubuS'. The difference is that I've never overclocked my machine in any way, and it has been running stable for the past year or so with the same specs.
Around 3 months ago it started (very rarely) to hang on the "fake boot" with all fans running at max speed and not POSTing. The solution to each of those cases would be the CMOS clearing and loading of optimized values. After each episode it would run smoothly for many days until it happened again.
Then 3 days ago it started to hang on the fake boot for minutes, sometimes turning on and off for random periods of time, and clearing the CMOS would not solve it. During that time MoBo would show 4 red lights which made me wonder if it was a CPU issue. Strangely enough, each of these episodes were solved by simply letting it turn on/off by itself until it finally started to POST. Now I'm trying to leave my computer turned on at all times, only rebooting by OS.
I'm running Windows XP SP3, P35 platinum, E6750 at stock speeds and cooler, Corsair XMS Twin2X 2GB RAM (set at BIOS for Default speed), 500GB Western Digital HD, eVGA 8800GT @ factory clocks. System is running at mild temperatures, current BIOS version 1.9, Zalman ZM600 PSU.
I'd like any opinions on what I should do to try and fix this, should I try the same thing as incubusS even though I never OCed and am running everything at default/factory settings? I'm kinda scared to actually turn it off to try anything so I'd like to get any input beforehand

Hey Jack, first of all thanks for the reply.
The modules are Corsair's TWIN2X2048-6400C4DHX, two 1GB sticks set in dual mode according to the P35's manual displacement. Their settings in BIOS are left as the default. I can't remember the voltage right now, but it was set as it was from optimal values, grayed out.
As for the message, it would appear during the first episodes (meaning the ones 3 months ago), saying "previous attempt to OC failed", but the ones I'm having now are actually booting without any BIOS tuning at all, although one of them happened after I reset CMOS from the MoBo switch, requiring another BIOS loading.
What baffles me is that even during the first problems I'd never tried to OC my machine in any way.
I hope any of that helps... I'm actually contemplating trying some BIOS tweaking since I won't have to turn the computer off completely, which is what frightens me.

P35 Platinum: I have to press the power button multiple times to start

Hello fellow MSI customers,
as written in the subject, I have a problem with starting my PC. When I press the power button, the computer powers on, but there is no output to the screen. In fact, my LCD stays in standby mode. I can hear the fans running, so something is going on. According to the LEDs on the mainboard, it is a memory problem.
Now I turn the computer off, using the power button (have to hold it for a few seconds). When off, I start again and everything runs as it should.
After starting, I ran memtest86 multiple times without any errors. I ran a few games, compiled some programs, installed Vista 64bit, Linux, all without any crashes or hangups. It is just the starting that makes problems. After booting it is very stable.
Seeing that it could be a memory problem, I brought another pair of memory, just to be sure. I couldn't reproduce the problem on that day! Any type of memory I put in (the one before, or the newly brought home) the computer always started on the press of the button. So I thought, OK, maybe they were not seated correctly. But, alas, two days later it is again only starting by pressing the power button three times.
What I tried:
1. Boot using only 1 piece of memory stick
2. Boot using only 1 piece of memory, but different one
3. Use another pair of memory <- worked, but on that day it also worked using my original memory
4. Disconnected everything except graphics card, to make sure it is not a power supply issue (minimized power usage)
5. Tried all of the above with a different processor
6. Used another power supply
Any other ideas?
Here are my specs:
MSI P35 platinum
Core2 Q6600
Nvidia 7900GT
4GB V-Data DDR2 800MHz <--- I think this is the problem, any experiences?
Enermax Liberty 400W
a few other things (HDDs, XFi, DVD-RW)
By the way, how can I boot from an external DVD-RW? It doesn't show in the menu when I press F11 (boot menu).

And just to let a bit of steam off:
1. I had major problems with the RAID controller (not MSI fault, rather intel) - I put two disks into a RAID 0, then RAID 1 and they always failed after a few boots - member missing on both disks. I was getting angry, so I put them as normal (non RAID) disks and everything is fine since, although no RAID.
2. Installing anything except windows with an IDE DVD-RW is very hard. It took me ages until I got Ubuntu booting (there are guides on the net, google is your friend), and much longer to get grub (boot loader) working. Long story short - if you have multiple disks, use the Linux disk as the bootable, do NOT put grub on the disk where Vista is installed.
3. I have no idea, how to update the BIOS, if I had to. I'm using 1.1 that came on the board. I use 64bit Vista and Linux, none of which is supported to upgrade the BIOS. Any hints how to do it (if I needed to)?

now today is the day I've finally received my replacement board. The good news first - it DOES work! Yepeeee!
Now some more information:
The jmicron controller seems to be missing - a screen with something about "Marvel" is shown before the intel raid screen. However, it is only visible for a fraction of second, so I cannot read it. I think it detects my IDE DVD-RW so I'm quite certain it's the replacement for jmicron. I won't miss it - it took me ages to install Linux with the jmicron controller.
The problem where I had to restart the computer sometimes because it didn't even post (RAM error) is gone. It boots just fine now.
I had an extremely long first post - about a minute, but after that it boots very fast now.
anyway, regarding some questions around here - the manual states MSI recommends using an 350W power supply. My 400W is more than enough. Please note - it is an Enermax, not one bundled with a cheap case. My cheap RAM sticks also work very well now. I did try them on different boards before, so now I know I just had a faulty board.
In the end, I can only say this: This is my 3rd board already and it's the first one that works well. As the hardware changed, I presume there were major issues with this board that lead them to make a new revision. What is strange, though, is that the revision is still 1.1, as were my previous two. I pity everybody who had the same problems as I did, but I can now say that I'm very happy about the board now.
