Hello,
Running windows 7 64 Ultimate
3 different errors:
1: "A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart"
2: Random freeze when using the pc
3: Can't find booting device or something
it's random .. sometimes working 1 hour and problem .. sometimes (like now) no problems 20 hours+
I have this PC over 1 year and the problem started 3 months ago.. I've bought new HDD Western Digital 1TB
My specs:
MB MSI P45 NEO3-FR S775
DDR2 2x2GB 800 Kingston
CPU Desktop Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83Ghz
VGA PCX XFX 8600GT 250MB DDR3 DVI
Fortron 400w Power supply
DVD LG 20x GH20NS10 Sata
Can someone help me with this?
Is this a hardware or/and software problem?
Thanks

What is your current BIOS Version?

What is the exact model name of that PSU? How many +12V lines does it have and what is the amperage limit on each of them? (Look at the sticker on the PSU).

What is the exact model name/number? (There should be a sticker on the modules telling you that.)
What is the brand & model name of your hard drive?  Go to the manufacturer's product site and look for a diagnostic utility for DOS.  Then use this tool to do a full check of your hard drive.
what kind of hard drive are you using?

Are we looking at a "fresh" installation you put on for your current hardware configuration or is it an installation from an older system with different specifications?

I also have 3 case fans spinning away in a marginally large Chieftec Dragon tower.
The parts I marked with an asterisk (*) are parts that I removed from my old rig and re-used.
I'll try to give a clear rundown of my problem and the steps I've taken so far.
3 days ago I acquired the P45 Neo and installed it into my system, together with the 8800GT videocard. I was still using my old PSU, a Chieftec 360watt. This PSU served me well for 7 years, but it was starting to build up noise while trying to keep up games on my old rig.
I had some trouble getting the system to boot, I tried changing some of the 4 pins wires going to the hard drive and the dvd drive. I don't know if it was luck or if I managed to divide the load properly for the system to boot. But I succeeded into booting up, got into the bios and eventually installed WinXP.
As soon as it was time to install the videocard drivers, it stopped responding. I assumed it was a power issue, since I could only install the 20pin and 4pin cpu, but my Chieftec PSU didn't have a 24pin plug to the mobo - and it needed replacing anyway! So I bought a new 500watt PSU that had all the required plugs and more wattage.
I installed the new PSU, checked every connection and pressed the power button. 'Lo and behold, the computer starts up. I install the videocard drivers and it proceeds with no problems. I try to install the soundcard, but the cd says I don't have one installed. I fix that by going to the System list and install the drivers from there. I install a firewall. By then I have successfully rebooted the computer 3 or 4 times. I decide all is well and turn off the computer. But I realize I wanted to check up something on the internet.
I press the powerbutton. The PC power light go up for just a fraction of a second. I can see the blue LED of one of the case fans switching on just as briefly - then it goes out. The computer keeps trying to turn itself on. It looks like it's hickupping to try and boot!
I turn off the PSU power on the back-side because the computer keeps trying and wait for a bit. After 10 minutes, it still doesn't work. I leave the computer for a bit and return an hour later. The computer then starts up with no problems. I turn it off after a few hours, do a reset, start it up, no problems. But then the next day it happens again.
It's pretty tough figuring out what the problem is because it looks..almost random. I considered it could be a heat issue, but sometimes it *does* start up just after it's been turned down. Checking the bios shows no strange temperature shifts.
Hope anyone can help me, because I do not want to go back to my old Asrock mobo

While powered down I cleared the cmos data, removed the Dane Elec DDR2 module and set the bios to optimized defaults. Computer restarted to WinXP with no problems (it has been off the whole night). I shut down WinXP, wait a few moments and then turn the computer back on. Alas, it won't start and starts hick-upping. I turn power off at the PSU again, so it stops.
Now I try switching out the Kingston module instead. By now the computer has been off for 10 min (while I write this entry on laptop). I press the power button on the PSU and then the power button on the front. There is a short pause, lasting a second. The computer turns on, longer now, but it only lasts 2 whole seconds before it turns off again and goes on again (I believe now you can call it powercycling). It repeats this process until I shut off the PSU.
I check to see if I have installed it properly and try again but it starts powercycling again.
15 min pass, I put the Kingston module back in, press the power button and voila, this time it does start. WinXP shows up, no problems. I leave it on for a bit and then shut down. And when I press the power button again - the feeling of dread returns, when it starts hickupping again.
I'm going to see if I can install one of the memory modules from my housemate. Then hopefully tommorrow, I'm going to try if I can test a different PSU, since I see someone else on the forum - who recently posted, has the exact same power supply and also has boot problems, coincidence... or not ^^;.

Hello there! I have a Macbook pro OS X version 10.8.5 and I am having issues with it where I'd be on the line and sometimes it would just freeze up and the call would drop and I cannot do anything with Skype anymore but Force Quit it. Skype just literally stops working and I would have to force it down and restart it. It's been happening everyday for the past 3 days just recently.
Version 6.9 (517) Skype and it literally just happened again in a call. It says Application Not Responding on the dock and I've tried waiting nothing happens. I must force close it >< when I do it just disappears from my dock. After this happens I try to open it again but it says I have one already running and I must restart my laptop in order to get it to work again. What is the problem and what can I do? Thank you!

"Similar problem unsolved. It happens during calls and after sleep. Symptoms: "not responding" shown in Activity Monitor; skype  frozen; need to frequently force out and relaunch.

  • Stuck in Windows Vista on a 2012 13' Pro with a Boot Camp disk error

I am at the point in installation where I have just completed installing Vista. So I inserted the Boot Camp disk I was instructed to make earlier, and I receive the error message:
    D:\
The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail.
Fearing I did something wrong, I tried to switch back to the Mac OS sore, but of course I can't because boot camp hasn't finished its process. What can I do?

Vista is not supported on newer computers nor by Lion. No Vista drivers for the newer hardware and operating system. Read the documentation which states that Windows 7 is required. http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/

  • Bootcamp: hal.dll and disk error SOLVED. Simple workaround

Many people had the "hal.dll missing" and "No disk" error while trying to install Windows with bootcamp on OSX leopard. I read a lot of workarounds and solutions, which some are complicated and some just don't work.
Here is my simple workaround to get rid of errors:
(Principle: force the shell of windows to appear before installation, so that we can quick format the bootcamp partition with" format" command)
    1. Create a windows partition with bootcamp as usual (if you have already one then restore the OSX partition)
    2. Restart and boot on windows cd. (press the option key ("alt") during restart)
    3. When bluescreen appears and drivers are loading, press repeatedly F6 and F10. You should get a message that no SCSI disk was found and that you should press "S" or "enter" to continue. Press "enter". Now you should get a black screen in console mode.
    4. Now we format the bootcamp partition. Type this: "FORMAT C: /Q /FS:NTFS". Put FAT32 instead of NTFS if you want the file system to be FAT32.
    5. Press 'Y' to confirm.
    6. Restart the computer, boot on cd, and install windows as usual. When arrived on partitionning during install, DO NOT REFORMAT!!!! Install on the partition    that we just created before!
PS: I think that bootcamp just messes up the windows partition. That's why you get "disk error". When formatting during the windows installation, the partition is correct for windows but it overwrites entirely the bootcamp partition instead of just formatting it. I think that the quick format from the shell does just change the file system without modifying the partition itself. However, it works, so why bother why it does?....
Let me know if you have difficulties.

Perhaps you need to use an XP cd with sp2 slipstreamed, install boot camp update 2.1, then SP3.

Important: Installation of Boot Camp 2.1 is required before installing Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3)

  • Boot Camp - Disk error

    Hello,
I tried to install the boot camp with a new HDD I installed, but there was no luck with windows. When the laptop reboots, it goes straight to Windows partition having a black screen saying "Disk error ... Please press any key", even though the windows installation procedure was finished.
These are the steps I followed: I installed the new disk and then partitioned, using the disk utility, the disk in two parts one for the MAC OS X (HFS J) and the other for Windows (FAT32). After finishing the installation of MAC OS, I used the Boot camp assistant to proceed to the WIN installation. I selected the second option, because the first one didn't work for some reason, and then selected the "Start the Windows installer". After the installation of Windows, the laptop cannot boot from Windows partition, while trying to re-install Windows. If I enject the CD of Windows, I got the above error, "Disk error ... Please press any key".
What can I do about it? I have the latest firmware as you can see below:
the Windows XP had the SP3 and when I go to the WIN partition I created, I can see the Windows disk structure.
    Thank you.

Windows can only be installed on a partition created by Boot Campp Assistant. The only exception is a Mac Pro's second internal drive.

  • SBOD and disk errors-- oh my!

A month ago, a few weeks after I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion on my ~2010 21.5" Intel iMac, performance started to deteriorate, and the spinning beachball of death (SBOD) began to appear. (I do think the upgrade is a red herring.)
Safari seemed to trigger it most, though it happened at other times. So I disabled extensions and plugins, etc-- no dice. Then I looked at the console and saw that Kernel: disk0s2 I/O errors often happened when the SBOD appeared.
    Questions:
    1) I am hoping this is a hard drive problem based on the details below, labeled WHY I THINK DRIVE PROBLEM-- what do you all think?
    2) When I wiped my disk (details below) I neglected to save the recovery partition. How do I get this back?
    3) For some reason, I cannot boot off of my original snow leopard installation disc-- it always hangs after showing the bootup apple on the gray screen.
    4) I also cannot use the "D" key on bootup to hardware test the system.
How can I get my recovery partition back? How can I test my system? Do you think the hard drive will have auto-mapped bad blocks, or do you think an imminent crash will occur?
    DETAILS:
Disk Utility showed S.M.A.R.T. Verified, and said "No Apparent" problems with the hard drive (partitions) or volume-- though I am beginning to think that it would say a concrete slab had no apparent problems. I got SuperDuper (yes, I waited until I had problems! ) and tried making a current full backup to my time machine disk with SuperDuper, but it hung.
I tried resetting the NPROM and SMC, and around this time the iMac stopped booting-- it would hang with the spinning lines under the Apple on the gray screen forever. This happened regardless of pressing Command-R, or trying to go into Safe Mode. At these times, the top left of the iMac, above the slit, would get very hot. No fan would run.
I tried a number of things. Maybe the option key would have always worked, or maybe I had initially used the wrong key combination for NPROM, or hadn't waited long enough before restarting for the SMC. In any case, eventually I was able to boot again.
    WHY I THINK DRIVE PROBLEM:
This time, I got a USB drive (Seagate Backup Plus) and used SuperDuper to back up to it. There were several places where I had to delete files to continue. It always stopped at the same file until I deleted it. On a large file, I attempted to use "Curl -C - -O file://<pathname>" to copy, but it never could copy past a certain point in the file.
This makes me think the problem is indeed a disk error, as opposed to a cable, controller, or software-- unless the controller is hiccupping with a certain bit combination of drive address, which I guess is possible.
I WIPED MY DISK: Anyway, I got the drive backed up with some original corrupted files deleted. Then I used Disk Utility to wipe the original disk, and did one pass zeroing it out. Then I restored the drive.
The result is a wonderfully responding iMac again... but I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop.

The boot drive is failing, or you have some other hardware fault.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

  • Server connection: drops and disk errors

Currently, I'm the only workstation using a Mac Pro (the rest are G5s), and my connection to our art server (running Win 2003) constantly drops, whereas the G5s stay connected just fine. Also, today this same server started giving me code -41 disk error messages; I can't save or re-write anything onto the server, even though there's a good 20GB of storage available.

    John,
We lost the connection earlier this evening, and even though the lights were all still on on the Router, the only way to regain our connection seemed to be turning the router off and on (we did this at the plug, i'm not sure this is what we're meant to do!).
Are the events in my event log worrying at all? I'm scared by them!

  • Laptop randomly wont boot and randomly freezes. (w/ pics)

I am having some serious problems with my Mid-2007 flavor Macbook Pro. It started after I had not charged or used it for about a month while on winter break from school. I got back and let the battery charge fully before I tried to turn it on. I turned it on and was greeted by this scary looking screen.
    http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/3213/dsc0001uc7.jpg
It originally would also give me problems trying to boot windows as well.
    http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/1606/dsc0008nx8.jpg
But would eventually allow me to consistently boot windows and sporadically boot OSX. Windows seems to run pretty smoothly but OSX will run for up to an hour or two (usually less) before doing something like this:
    http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/2329/dsc0002gw1.jpg
I have more success booting in single-user mode but that screen sometimes looks like this:
    http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/9997/dsc0007aw2.jpg
I am guessing it is some sort of hardware problem and I am planning on being a very poor person soon, but would a Leopard reinstall serve me any good? Tried to document the weird screens I have been getting as best as I could, but if you need additional pictures, my computer has been freezing enough to get many more so just ask. Thanks for any help.

  • Surface Pro 2 freezes briefly - storachi and disk error

    Hello tech net
I am running a surface pro 2 with windows 8.1 (updates current as of 3 days ago), 4 GB RAM, 64GB HD.  For the last several months the device will freeze up for about 5-10 secs multiple times per hour, and then resolve on it's own.  During that
time task manager shows the disk is at 100% and event viewer will display 2 Warnings: an storachi (129) and a disk (153) error.  This is in addition to a service control error (7000) that happens multiple times per second but doesn't seem to
affect performance.  These freezes happen when plugged in, on battery, SDXC card installed or not, wi-fi or not, and no particular program running. It even happens when I'm not using the device if I go back thru event viewer.  The 100% on disk is
not associated with any increase in process or app activity.  Most of the time there are a couple 0.1MB/s demands like outlook, explorer or service host running but nothing that looks unusual when it spikes and freezes.
I am not a tech person and my online search for help has yielded a wide variety of solutions to this problem that didn't seem to be reliable fixes and sounded a little beyond my usual capabilities.  Anyone know if this is fixable or do I need to send
    the device back?
    Thanks!

Not much information here to go on. Can you supply the bdd.log file. Copy to a public share like OneDrive, and share the link.
Typically any problems with format and partition have to do with the storage driver. Are you using the latest ADK from Microsoft? As Surface Pro 2 only supports Windows 8.x, you should *only* be using uEFI mode and GPT.
THe default MDT Task Sequence will do the right thing, *however*, if you change the settings in the "FOrmat and Partition Disk" step, you are then responsible for the settings from then on.

  • G4 Dual 1.43 Ghtz won't boot and disk utility won't repair it

I can't get the Boot Disk Disk Utility to repair the drive on my old G4 Dual 1.43 and desparately need the Documents file and home folders.  Any ideas ?

This isn't going to be easy.
Does disk utility try to repair the drive?  If it mounts, you could try the software I list below.
You either goint to have to get an external firewire drive & install some mac os on it. Then run some utilities from this drive or you going to have to get the drive out and mount in an external enclosure & run utilities.
There our commercial places that recover data.  They will not be cheap.
I do not know what type of drive you have in the machine.  So before buying an empty enclosure check.

  • Help! PB G4 won't boot and Disk Utility can't fix it!

I have an insufficiently backed up PowerBook G4 1.67MHz (1GB RAM) that suddenly nosedived last night. I was surfing the Web and OmniWeb froze up. I couldn't force-quit it because the Finder was also locked up. So I held the power button until it shut down. When I restarted it, it got to the grey apple screen and hung there. I booted off the Tiger CD and ran Disk Utility, but it couldn't fix it. Then I tried booting into single-user mode and it also failed. Finally I tried reinstalling the system, but the CD couldn't find the hard drive. Aaargh!
I have a bunch of documents that I really cannot lose, and the most updated versions of them are only on this drive. Anyone know any tricks or third-party utilities that can help? I have another Mac; would Firewire Target Mode or Network booting help?
    Some details:
    Here's what Disk Utility said:
Invalid volume header (this was written in red)
    Checking Catalog file
Keys out of order (in red)
    Rebuilding Catalog B-tree (in green)
The volume [name] could not be repaired (in red)
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (in bold red)
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error (in bold red)
Repair attempted on one volume (in bold)
1 volume could not be repaired (in bold red)
Then it popped up a dialog box:
    First Aid Failed
Disk Utility stopped repairing [name] because the following error was encountered:
The underlying task reported failure on exit (in bold)
    Here's what single-user said:
It all booted normally, then I got these ominous entries in the list:
    disk0s3: I/O error.
    jnl: dojnlio: strategy err 0x5
jnl: open: could not read 512 bytes for the journal header.
hfs: late jnl init: failed to open/create the journal (retval 8).
    nfs_boot: networking is not initialized
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0x001F2634): nfsbootinit failed with 6
    [then there's two backtraces here]
    panic: We are hanging here...

As Mr Peck advised, DW is your best chance of getting out of this.
The important point of your post is the hard shut down (were you running Classic?) and the mention of Keys Out of Order. Do a search on these boards for Keys Out of Order for a quick education of the problem.
Make sure of the version of DW you use, get the disk and don't download, and make sure of your firmware version.

  • Powerbook Won't boot - And disk permissions won't repair

    My powerbook G4 won't boot normally or in safe mode but will load up using the leopard disk to instilation page. Once there the folowing issues become aparrent;
    1. Not enough space to archive and install
    2. Disk persmssions can't be verified or repared (the disk can be both verified and repaired and appears normal)Have waited overnight for this to complete and it hasn't.
    3. Whilst it connects to networks it doesn't appear on them to allow data to be removed to make space
    4. Attemting to use disk utility restore function to copy the hard disk onto a external hard drive fails (bar about 1/8 of the way across predictions stat at 1hr58 and reach 6 hours when the powerbook starts making a lot of noise nad the external hard drive activity appears to halt)
Any ideas on how to resolve this?

Might be worth a shot trying to transfer in TDM, once booted from the install disk:

  • X250 Dual Booting and Disk Management

Hi, when I got my X250, I got it with the intention of dual booting the system, with a Linux Distro (Probably Ubuntu in this case). However, when I took a look at the Disk Managment system (within Windows 8.1), it showed several partitions on the disk that are marked as 'Recovery Partitions, and they are placed at both the start and the end of the disk. What appears to be the boot partition and file system is somewhere in the middle, and so it makes it quite difficult to discern what I can do with these. Having checked back about 3 months after my first look, it appears that all the partitions apart from the boot ones are still 100% free (they have no data in them). Is Dual Booting still a viable option here, or will manipulating these partitions affect the performance? What should I look to do, because I still require Windows for the compatibilitiy, but I need to learn how to use Linux?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The GMA chip does have a weird things about it which may be causing a problem. Unless your physical RAM is high enough, it won't give you the full 64 MB of VRAM. Boot Camp may also have a bug which you should at least report to Apple's bootcamp AT apple.com e-mail address. There is also a Boot Camp forum here where you can find out just how much VRAM people are able to get out of the Boot Camp environment:
