P45 Platinum - OCing with FSB jumpers

Hi,
I have already had problems with my memory and you guys helped me alot so i suggested to post my new problem here,,, maybe you guys know what to do.
I have a MSI P45 platinum with Intel Q9550 but when i check the ratings with CPU-Z it says my CPU is running at 2 GHZ and only using 6.0 x multiplier... were it should be 2.83 GHZ and 8.5 x multipliere ( Stock settings ).. how is this possible and how to fix this ? also in the BIOS it says its just running normal ( 2.83 GHZ at 8.5 x ) and so thoes windows XP and vista do ( they show 2.83 GHZ. ) but i think that is normal since vista and XP see a Q9550 and tell me it runs on 2.83 GHZ when its working properly.
it is running on 1333 MHZ ( well its 1336.4 to be exact) but i think it won't hurt if its running on it right ?
what settings should i change to let it run normal ? maybe the voltage for the CPU ?
Also i was checking my BIOS for this problem but i couldn't find he multiplier option where you can OC it... or do i need to enable something for it ?

You need an Intel Extreme Edition Processor to be able to overclock the CPU by rasing the multiplier beyond standard.  On all other model, all ratio higher than default are locked by Intel.

Raising the FSB Clock Speed is the only way to overclock the processor.  You can try to remove the OC Jumpers of the board completely, which will force the FSB Frequency to 400 MHz via hardware.  Do a CMOS Clear (with main A/C power cable removed from PSU) after removing the jumpers and see if the system will start up okay.  Alternatively, you can simply raise the FSB Clock Speed in BIOS (but keep the FSB/DRAM Ratio in mind, when you do that, as the memory clock is tied to the FSB Clock via set ratios.)

    I was watching this board for a few days now but I haven't had seen any post with a similar problem.  I've already tried bios 1.1, 1.2 and the beta bios 1.22.  What happens is when I run a game, it will close a few minutes later and Vista will show a "nvlddmkm stopped responding" error.  This happens with forceware version 175.19, 177.79 and 177.83.  With forceware 169.25 though, I can play a game normally.  If not for the specific driver version that works, I might have suspected it's a power supply problem.  I was fine with using the older driver, but now that they released the new driver with Physx support, I want to update.
    Someone in another forum said that he was able to make his 8800GT Sonic work with beta bios v. 1.24, but had problems with beta 1.23.  I don't have the 1.24 bios to test yet to see if it'll fix the issue.
    I'm aware of the 8800Gt having issues with older boards with PCI-E v1 but since this board has PCI-E 2.0, this should not be the case.  I've also tried putting the card into the second PCI-E slot but encountered the same problem.  The 6 pin power connector is properly connected to the video card, and I even tried connecting a 4 pin molex to the connector above the PCI-E slot (which I know is used as extra power for Crossfire configuration).
    So.. anybody encountered this problem too?  Any solutions (other than getting an ATI card).

    hi all ,does any here have any stable settings? i want to change settings in the bios ,tried the duel core DOT and its not much good ,i have windows 7 x64 build 7600,and a T1 thermaltake heatsink , i get it up to around 3.2ghz with the DOT ,stills stays cool only around 19c to 21c even under load,but when i start ruunig some games it freezes up ,i have 2x4870 ati cards 512ddr4 in crossfire ,they pass all the tests with flying colors ,but i know this is capable of much more, oh,, sorry i forgot ,, my bios version is the newest one, whatever that maybe .i dont feel like leaving windows right now , but i just updated last week.right from msi.com website.

  • P45 Platinum - Problem with Dual Channel

    Hi,
    As Topic says I have a problem with my new board, it gets stuck at checking memory (that is what the status-led shows) it's a rev 1.1 and had it replaced once before for the same problem, so I think it's a Software-problem..... I have 2x2GB "Crucial Ballistix Union Jack CL4"-kit it works fine in single channel (DIMM 1&2) but not in dual channel (DIMM 1&3) so if someone knows PLEASE help me with the problem...

  • P45 Platinum- Unable to insert 2 sticks of DDR2

    Just purchased an MSI P45 Platinum Motherboard, with an Intel Core2 Duo E7300.  This is a 2.66GHZ chip with 1066MHZ FSB.
    Originally, the board had V1.0 bios.  When installing 2 stick kit of Kingston KHX6400D2K2/2G, the system hung with the LED's indicating memory error.  I then bought equivalent Corsair and had the same problem.
    When I tried starting the system with 1 stick, system boots.
    I upgraded the BIOS to 1.5 today.  Now, when the system starts with 2 sticks, it hangs up and reboots continuously.  Install only 1 stick, system boots normally.
    I previous reply to a post on another thread indicated timing values of
                 5 5 5 18 4 23 6 10 7.8us 2T 1.95V FSB/MEM 1:1.2
    however I was not comfortable(yet) with changing these bios settings because I couldn't easily find them all in the order supplied.  For example, I can get the 5 5 5 18, but the 4 was not the next logical setting and the 7.8us I couldn't find.
    Perhaps I can get a more specific timing explanation(I know it is a pain).

    Since the problem goes away when just one mem. stick is in slot #1, & you have bios 1.5, it is pointing to XP SP2 or the system not liking that second 2G stick installed. Since XP 32 bit can only recognize around a max. of 3G's mem. anyway, maybe a change to 2X1G in slots 1 & 3 may be a better option. That would enable dual channel, as with just 1X2G in slot 1, it would be single channel & a slight decrease in performance.
    Once you have CPU-Z, the SPD's JEDEC & EPP will be valuable information. Also, stay away from the D.C.C. & just use bios Cell Menu to adjust mem. V's & timings. A new Utility Tool is out that can be used as a reference tool & mem. tweaker. Altho it can be used to tweak, I have not tried that, so best to stick with bios to be safe.

  • P45 Platinum fan issue

    I've been running a P45 Platinum mobo with an E8500 core 2 duo processor.   After the initial 3 or 4 minutes of usage, the CPU fan quickly goes to full speed for a few seconds, making it sound like a jet engine.  After a few seconds, the fan goes back to normal speed and stays that way.  This occurs each time after a cold boot.  Is this some sort of setting that needs to be changed, or simply how the mobo operates?  Looked through the manual and BIOS settings but haven't been able to see anything related.

    The BIOS can adequately control the CPU fan if set correctly and you don't use a joke aftermarket HSF. A correctly set up Smart fan will run the CPU fan at full pelt for a few seconds at switch on before chopping it back as the BIOS boots and starts control.

  • Q9550 and P45, issues with FSB anything over stock.

    I recently acquired Q9550 revision E0 cheap-ish (it's still new, not second hand) so I decided to switch my E8500 for it and see can I bump some extra juice out of it.
    Well, apparently I can't.
    So far I haven't managed to get it stable even at 400 FSB with memory divider 1:1.000, wich is rather strange to me. Tried even lowering the multiplier for CPU to 6 so it was way underclocked while adding more volts to it. 1.36 was the maximum I tried with no luck at all, disabling phase controls, greenpower, c1e and so on doesn't affect anything.
    Suggests to me that the board itself is refusing to pull FSB up, but few weeks back I were still running C2D with 420 and no problems at all.
    Different BIOS versions seem to have some kind of impact, initially I tried with latest official, 1.6 and with that I could get prime to run blend test for 10+ hrs easily, call of duty black ops crashed to windows within minutes tho'. 1.7b9 and the one I have now, 1.7b14 crash in prime95 under 5 seconds to BSOD.
    I know there's the possibility that this chip just doesn't want to take FSB, they are all inviduals and so on. Or that I've accidentally made something explode in my mobo.
    On stock settings \ everything on auto it runs like a charm, can play and run prime95\IBT until doomsday if I want to.
    So far I've given MCH 1.4 volts and VTTFSB has been at 1.3 max, tried loosening memory timings from 5-5-5-18 to pretty much anything. And this all CPU underclocked but it's a no go.

    Now while Prime95 is doing blend-test on the background with stock speeds CPU-Z reports from 1.248 to 1.256 vcore and core temps are pretyt much 50 celsius each. Idles are from 28 to 34.

    I doubt very much it's the CPU. Also I have a similar system, except yours is a E0 chip Q9550 (should be better at overclocking) whilst mine is a C1 Q9450. Also I have a 5770 to your GTX 460. You've probably already read my settings and experience, but I'll chip in.
    My experience of instability on this board due to voltages and overclocking resulted in either a total system freeze, or prime fail. BSOD never happened unless it was a RAM (voltage, or overclocked too far) or driver error, especially the graphics card.
    ALSO - CHECK YOUR SATA CABLES! I was driven mad by a batch of bad SATA cables that came with my P45 Platinum. All of them were dodgy and had to be replaced. The contacts were thin and got flatterned easily. Man those sucky cables wasted a lot of my time thinking my overclock was unstabe.
    Place the jumpers back on the board - so it boots at 333.
    Reset the bios completely by cutting the power for five minutes, then using the jumper/reset switch.
    Enter bios
    Load optimized defaults - save and exit
    Run memtest86+ at default speeds - wait for one pass
    Reset and enter bios
    Disable Greenpower and Phase controls, C1E HALT and EIST for now.
    Set the safe and conservative voltages in my sig (except CPU, you may need higher or reduce your multiplier) and try setting 400 FSB
    MAKE SURE YOU SELECT THE 1600/800 1:1 divider AND NOT THE 1333/667 1:1
    Run memtest86+ again and see if it passes
    I can tell you with certainty, that 1.160v on the MCH Northbridge will be good all the way up to 440 at least, even touching on 450.
    VTT does not need to be higher than 1.21 for 400-450.
    Southbridge 1.52v, mem 1.9v will sail nearly all the way to 900Mhz with 5-5-5 enhanced setting on auto and 1:1 1600/800.
    CPU 1.225v can get you up to 3.6Ghz usually, perhaps less or a little more.
    All the other voltages (GREF etc) and timings on AUTO.
    It could be a driver problem, so I would run memtest86+ outside of windows first or test the system outside of windows in some other way (linux boot cd?). Also, it might be that the bios has chipset timings that your GTX 460 just doesn't like. :(

  • Doubt about overclocking with p45 platinum

    hi guys
    i have a Q8200 processor and an MSI p45 platinum motherboard.
    now the multiplier on the processor is 7
    now using a a bus speed of 400mhz i was able to achieve a 400 * 7 = 2.8Ghz on my processor from 2.33
    now when i use cpuZ it shows that im currently running at 1600fsb
    now as per the board specs 1600 fsb is the maximum.
    now does this mean that i wont be able to overclock further ?
    i am currently using transcend 800 mhz DDR2 ram
    i have the memory divider set at 1:1
    so the rams are running at 800mhz
    now if i try to further overclock the board, it results in a no boot. i get a single green light and rest 3 are red and the mother board restarts 3 times and then i get the overclock failed message could some 1 advise me on how to go further increase my overclock ?
    i have tried to increase my processor voltage and my ram voltage by quite a bit (not over the safe limit though) but still not able to boot :(

    This just states that Processors that natively run @400 MHz FSB Clock Speed are supported.  It has nothing to do with overclocking margins.
    Try this for a quick test:
    - turn off the system
    - remove both OC Jumpers to force the FSB Clock Speed to 400 MHz
    - Clear CMOS with main A/C power cable removed from PSU
    See if the system boots and runs stable.  If it does, use the BIOS for further overclocking from the 400 MHz Strap.  As you are forced to overclock your memory modules as well when you raise the FSB Clock Speed beyond 400 MHz try raising the memory voltage to 1.9-2V to see if that helps. 
    Spread Spectrum should be enabled at all times in the Cell Menu. 

  • P45 Platinum will not boot Server 2008 with 2x2GB...

    I was working through the night last night to get my new rig built and installed with the new SP2 of Server 2008 and was having problems that seem to point to the mobo not liking the optimized settings for my 2x2GB.  Hopefully my signature has all the system specs necessary - but do ask if I've left anything out.
    What I did:
    - Built system with minimal HW: 
         CPU & cooler, PSU, 2x2GB (slots 1 & 3), GeForce 8600, 2x250GB SATA2 HDs (ports 7 & 8 for JMicron) , 1xSATA2 DVD-RW
    - Got POST and configured BIOS: 
         Load optimized defaults, reset time.
    - Added Rest of HW, got POST and configured RAID:
         - Integrated Peripherals - RAID Mode:  RAID
         - Integrated Peripherals - On-Chip ATA Devices - RAID Mode:  IDE
         - Save &  Exit
         - CTRL-J:  Built 2x250GB JMicron RAID
    - Boot to Server 2008 install DVD
         - Loaded RAID driver and installed to RAID
         - Installation continued (at a wonderfully fast pace), until it hung about 90% through
    - Tried re-installing several times, trying things like reconfiguring RAID, using different drivers, etc. 
    - Then I removed the 2nd RAM in DIMM 3, and re-install completed without a hitch.
    - Booted from RAID, configured Server 2008.
    - Installed drivers for Intel P45 Chipset, GeForce 8600, Ethernet, and Audio
    - Retried having 2 x 2GB in DIMM 1 & 3, and reboot hung during Server 2008 loading bar
         - Tried DIMM in 2 & 4 with same results.  Again, system POSTs with no problem, seeing all 4GB.  But OS hangs on load.
    - Ran MemTest on each RAM separately, with no problems after an hour each.
    - Put the 1 RAM back in DIMM 1 and used LiveUpdate to successfully Flash BIOS from v1.2 to v1.6
    - Reconfigured BIOS (optimized defaults and JMicron RAID)
    - Rebooted to Server 2008 successfully with only 1 RAM in DIMM 1
         - Tried DIMM in 1 & 3 and 2 & 4, and again hung on OS load.
    - With only 1 RAM installed, the OS flies.  I did lots of application and utility experimentation to ensure all was functional and stable.   Even Defraged the RAID, so I'm pretty sure no HDD problem.
    Based on all the forum posts I've read, I'm not sure about why it POSTS but doesn't load the OS, but I bet it has something to do with the mobo being unstable with the default settings for this RAM.  Seems too bad as I tried to pick a decent RAM for future OC potential.
    Out of fairness, I should point out that I have not yet tried blowing away the OS and reinstalling with my only other option - XP Pro SP3 - and seeing how that fairs.  My guess is that it too will be unstable. 
    Fortunately, I'm still having fun tinkering - so no real frustration to speak of.  But any advice on what to do next would be much appreciated...

    Finally, in response to RemusM's request, here's the CPU-Z info for Memory, SPD and CPU using the Optimized Default BIOS settings and 1x2GB in DIMM 1:
    Then, I spent a late night last night browsing the forums and searching the web.  I found a dude with the same mobo, memory and an E8400.  He was having similar problems and listed some recommended BIOS Cell settings.  I put in my 2x2GB, removed the HW OC FSB jumpers on the mobo and entered the following settings into BIOS Cell and gave it a try:
    Multi-Step OC Booster:  Mode1
    DOT Control:   Disabled
    Intel EIST:  Enabled
    Intel C-STATE Tech:  Disabled
    Adjust CPU FSB Freq:  400
    Advancd DRAM Config:  (all Auto)

    Clock Gen Tuner:  (all Auto)
    Adj PCI Freq:  Default
    Auto Disable DRAM/PCI Freq:  Enabled

    Spread Spectrum:  Disabled
    Not only did now my system now boot successfully into the OS for the first time with 2x2GB installed, but it seemed stable through my OS config and application installs.  What's more, for the cost of taking the DRAM down to 800MHz, I now had the CPU at 3.8GHz!

    - I need to further test stability by downloading and running some decent benchmarks of some type
    - I'd love to get some advice on how I could further tune the above settings for increased stability and even better performance, as the memory and CPU seem capable of more if the mobo is...

    My goal is set at 3GHz and to get a lower cpu voltage (lower than my current 1.3175v), but anything below 1.3175v restarts when i stress test using OCCT. I've run memtest and it's ok. Can anybody advise which voltage I can configure to lower my cpu voltage? Also, is 333 x 9 to achieve 3GHz better? Or should I go with 375 x 8? Thanks! Btw, I plan to maintain these settings for the remainder of my CPU's life..  :D

    thanks for the tip. i'm currently logging all my OC settings in an excel file. i just finished played an hour of COD4 without any restarts or instability. currently my settings are just the same except CPU voltage is at 1.344v and i reduced my Dram voltage to 2.0v. running memtest for over an hour, 2 passes already with no errors. i'll stress test it over the weekend.
    i have a question though. a lot of people are suggesting a 1:1 FSB/DRAM ratio. but using 333x9 settings @ 1:1, you get 667.. i'm using 2x 2GB GeiL PC6400 800, that's why i used the 1:1.2 FSB/DRAM ratio to get 800. is it ok to keep using the 1:1.2 FSB/DRAM ratio even though people say 1:1 is the ideal ratio? many thanks for the reply

  • P45 Platinum Optimum memory settings with 2GB Corsair 1066 memory

    Hi all,
    Looking for some advice on optimum memory settings as I seem to have been getting unstable results from experimenting with settings and the optimum defaults.
    My configuration is as follows:
    MSI P45 Platinum (V1.0 PCB) (V1.4 Bios)
    Intel Dual Core Duo E8500
    Corsair TWIN2X2048-8500C5D DDR2-1066 5-5-5-15-2T configured for 2.2v in Bios
    Palit 9800GT
    2 x Maxtor 1TB HD's
    1 x Floppy + Memory card readers
    2 x Samsung DL-DVD-DW's
    Silverpower SP-400P2C 400W PSU
    With the default optimised settings loaded, the system does not book reliably or pass the memory test, in fact memtest86 just hangs when booted
    With the Memory configuration set to 1:1.33 (1600:1066) the systems appears to pass the memory tests and windows is relatively stable. Voltage set to 2.2volt with Spead Spectrum disabled.
    Is this really the optimum configuration ? as the Adjusted DRAM Frequency reported by the bios is 887 and I was expecting to see 1066.
    Any suggestions as how to optimise reliably would be appreciated.
    Although I suspect I may have a PSU issue as once booted the system locks when running any 3D games/demo's and it looks liek the 9800GT's need a lot more amps that I thought when putting the system together.

    First of all, your DDR2 modules are in fact DDR2-800 (they're using overclocked-overvolted DDR2-800 chips).
    Sencondly you need to understand how a FSB/DRAM divider works.
    Your processor is Intel E8500 and that means a bus frequency of 1333MHz (333MHz quad-pumped).
    In your case 1:1.33 means 1.33 x 333 x 2 = 887 MHz for the DDR2 modules.
    Set the divider to 1:1.6 if you want the DDR2 modules to run at 1066MHz.
    And finally, the "optimum configuration" for max system stability means real DDR2-1066 (7-7-7-20 at 1.8V) or
    DDR2-800 (5-5-5-15 at 1.8V).

  • P45 platinum having issues with 8 gigs of Ram

    I just put together a new system. When I tried to install windows it kept giving me an error couldn't load winload.exe. I immediately thought I had a bad stick of ram. I ran Memtest with no errors reported. I tried taking 3 of the 4 sticks of ram out and then windowds would start to install fine. I tried every stick of ram this way and it all worked. Putting 2 sticks in is fine also (4 gigs total). Whenever I add 2 more sticks the board goes into an infinite reboot cycle. Having tested the different possible combinations of the sticks and the slots on the motherboard I am at a loss. Also this is OZC memory that is on the motherboards approved list and has been tested with it by MSI. Anyone know of others who have had issues with 8 gigs. Is there a bios setting I should try and change? Thank You!

    Okay, typical idiosyncratic OCZ SPD Profiles. 
    In Cell Menu, try these settings:
    DRAM Voltage = 2.0V
    MCH Voltage = 1.3V
    Spread Spectrum = Disabled
    Auto Disable DIMM/PCI Frequency = Disabled
    Save & Exit, shutdown your system, add the other memory modules and see what happens when you start your system.
    If that does not work, start again with only two modules, reduce memory clock speed to 667 MHz (FSB/DRAM Ratio = 1:1) and retry with four modules.

  • P45 Platinum with Q9550 problem

    here's my spec :
    P45 platinum board (bios 1.51)
    Q9550 (E0)
    Gskill PC8800 pi 2x2Gb DDR2
    2x Gecube 3870 turbo
    Cooler Master M700 real power
    Zalman CNPS 9700
    and then my problem is i cant go stable over 412 fsb. Im trying hard to setup in cell menu bios and never luck. No matter how many u rise voltage at vcore,vtt,vmch,etc. and lower multiplier (also ratio 1:1) its always unstable. If i could not wrong, i heard many guys out there seems problem too, and that because the bios boards issue? I find something wrong with bios 1.51, my quads its too high temp than real and i cant set vcore over 1.19 and vmch over 1.35
    Please help me, i need advice & suggestion. thanx be4

    ahaa.. u got right intuition Aaron. Well, i check up temp with 2 model. First, as ur suggest using with Core Temp 0.99.4, and the second with HWmonitor Ver. 1.08. But too bad i cant post the pic in here because my internet connection bandwitch is very, very slow.... (oh god, i waste the time for upload it) :-(
    I strap fsb to 400 (3.4Ghz) and averything i set it auto (nothing more OC, just only strap fsb)
    On the Core Temp shows 42C at idle (1.1 Vcore), and various temp core1-4 between 41-44C. and with HWmonitor its shows 48C (1.09 Vcore) at idle and various temp core1-4 between 46-49C. And last in bios, vcore always show between 50-52C
    Ok, now which better i trust? .. lol
    and.. oh ya aaron, if u dont mine can u tell me ur setup in cell menu to OC ur quad 9450 at x48 boards? I know its different chipset but just for compare.

  • Inappropriate Temperatures with P45 Platinum

    Greetings to Everyone. 
    Ok, i bought MSI P45 Platinum recently. and i must say, i am quite impressed with whats it delivering at the moment. I tried setting FSB to 380 with multiplier:9 and left all the rest settings on auto. Machine performed POST without any issues. However, idle temps were around 66 degrees, as processor has stock HSF!  So, shifted back to 3.04Ghz (380x8) with 1:1 divider and with memory timings: 4-4-4-12.
    Everything went fine. System passed IntelBurn Test, Prime95 and 3DMark06 stability and benchmark tests with flying colors. Super-Pi 1M was calculated at 15 secs. I say not bad for Q6600 @3.04Ghz!
    However, during all these tests i constantly faced errorenous temperature display with utilities. I consistently monitored everything on CoreTemp, RealTemp, Intel TAT, HWMonitor, SpeedFan and as well as MSI Dual Core Centre! (lol had to be sure which one gave accurate, so tried everyone of em! :D) Now, here is the thing:
    Except Dual Core Centre, everyone else showed temps @ idle around 60 degrees and @ load around 75 degrees! While dual Core showed idle @ 48 degrees and @ load around 56 degrees! Another thing, both CoreTemp and MSI utlity showed same readings with Core percentage usage.
    See, everything seems so normal. I am using CoolerMaster Elite 333 cabinet with two 120mm fans at front and back. My GPU idles around 55 degrees and hard disk temperature never crosses 40 degrees! So, what is wrong with CPU temperature??
    Please, i desperately need your advice on this.
    Another thing, my friend is using P35 Platinum and everything same as mine. However, his machine never crosses 47 degrees at idle @ 3.0Ghz! Then why mine?

    I followed your advice and reseated heat sink assembly after cleaning the CPU heat spreader and applying AS5.
    In the beginning, something went wrong and realtemp showed all cores above 95 degrees!! For some time i took that as a joke. But, later i reseated HSF assembly again and this time everything went fine. I am right now @2.4Ghz and processor idles around 46 degrees. Pretty pleased with the results. Ran Intel Burn test for an hour and temps rarely crossed 75 degrees!! (And ohh btw, that Intel Lin Pack really shoot temps like anything! What a thing!)  Ok, everything went fine.
    However, there are few things i would like to clear..
    1. That EVGA card blows too much of heat within the cabinet! Only raising the fan speed to 60% helps bringing down the overall system temps by 4-5 degrees!! I mean, i dont want to sound naive...but is it supposed to happen this much? And somehow if it does then what can i do? Comments please...
    2. I think, Q6600 can be o/c'd pretty easily on this board. However, i have few doubts..
    (a) Do i always have to stick with 9 multiplier?? I mean, i tried with 8, and everything went fine. But, if everything is good to go with 9 multiplier then there is options for lower figures? I mean are there any benefits with different figures?
    (b)Spread spectrum should be left enabled while overclocking?
    (c)And what about Green Power and EIST? EIST should be disabled while overclocking. But can we leave Greenpower on?
    (d)I may have options to go for CoolerMaster CPU cooling setups. Why coolermaster only? Ok, thats because, in here, we dont have brands like Arctic, Thermaltake or Zalman in markets! :( I mean, they can be ordered through net, but i think its better to purchase from a retailer with all bills and stuff. Anyways, suggestions required for a descent CoolerMaster CPU cooler. That'd be good right?
    (e)How much difference does third party cooler can make in comparison to a stock one?
