P45 Platinum - Overclocking Core2 Duo & Ram

Hi all,
I recently got a P45 Platinum.  Have had alot of bother with it todate.  It started off when it recognised my memory at 800Mhz when infact it was 1066 DDR2 Dominator.  Bios update version 1.1 looked like I could set it too 1066 on auto but it still recognised it as 800mhz.  However Bios update 1.1 would not boot with my Nvidia GX2.  Cured that got the beta 1.2b and all works well.
However I am running 3dMarks06 and the max I pushed out of my system was 15000 :-( .  Was kind of hoping for bit more, still very laggy in crysis at times.
I am thinking about pushing a little more outta my CPU but if i fiddle with the CPU FSB currently default 333 it does not boot right and resets to be done.  I have set the voltage to 1.3 and ram 2.0.
Any thoughts on this issue.

Your memory modules are recognized as DDR2-800 modules, because the SPD-Chips of these modules do not have an SPD-Profile for DDR2-1066 which the BIOS could detect to set memory clock speed to DDR2-1066.  Your modules present themselves as DDR2-800 modules to the BIOS (because they are basically DDR2-800 modules).  The BIOS can only read SPD profiles, not what Corsair has actually printed onto sticker that is on each module.

If you check the official Corsair datasheet for your modules, you will see that it will say that these modules were tested @1066 MHz @2.1-2.2V, not that they are DDR2-1066 modules.  At the bottom of the datesheet you will find a brief note telling you that the actual OC results "may vary".  I am not sure which memory related settings you have tried so far. If you need advice and suggestions regarding memory settings, please let us know the precise model name/number of your modules and tell us which settings you have tried so far.

What settings have you modified besides FSB clock speed & voltage?

  • P45 Platinum - overclocking 4870 X2

Ok so iam back again with another problem, it seems that overclocking a 4870 X2 is very hard ATM, Everything i tried to OC my 4870 X2 won't work, i tried almost anything ( ATI Overdrive, Rivatuner, ATI Tool Etc. ) but it won't work properly ( Many Artifacts ) and it won't run stable, the Temps stay good since iam using my GPU Fan for atleast 40%.
    Any Ideas for this ?
Thanks for your time and wisdom

    System Specs:

    Powercolor HD 4870X2
    640 GB Samsung Spinpoint
    Zealous 650 watt modulair
    Recom Powerstation case
Ok.. the core clock is 750 MHZ and the memory @ 900 MHz.. i don't think its a power problem, more of a heat and Volt problem.. i tried some stuff already, making my fan run faster will give me less artifacts for some reason when its OCed a bit..
The temps are good.. IDLE its 40 -50 degrees and under load its around 80 - 100 degrees depending on what game iam playing ( Crysis for instance is around 100 degrees. )
Under 3Dmark06 around 85 degrees.. maybe Vantage will pull it up to 100 degrees, still need to test that today.
I am using the latest 8.12 drivers + catalyst center, so that should not be the problem i guess ?
ow.. and BTW my score in 3Dmark06 is just over 16000, maybe its some usefull info.

I hereby officially refuse to tell you that because your question clearly shows that you have not taken the time to look into the mainboard's user manual which not only shows where the jumpers are located but also what you can do with them.
I can understand for that all. It is same like me when to tried help another people ask a question for that things but sometimes you can not explained with words. Instead you get bashing with short explained like that
(you know exactly what i meant...lol)

i have no mainboard's user manual  taken, iám going to shop back asking for the manual.
but i think the jumpers are these
Right!! that is location of the jumpers, short the jumpers in strap potition what you need and dont forget to give this shot before do that:
    1. Disconnected PSU from A/C power
    2. Put your OC jumpers potition what you need (ex, 266-333 or 333-400)
    3. Push button Clear CMOS at back your case
    Hope this can help.

  • Why can't I install MacOSX Lion on a Mac Mini with 10.6.8, 2GB RAM, and CPU upgraded to Core2 Duo?

I have an older Intel Mac Mini running fully updated Snow Leopard with an upgraded CPU (Core2 Duo), RAM (2GB), and hard drive.
Supposedly, this should be compatible with Lion, but the App Store refuses to download it.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

It's not the graphics card it is the fact that it is an "upgraded"
system.  Lion, as with any OSX install, is based on the
original computer ID.  If the ID indicated that it was not
a model that was shipped with a CPU that meets the minimum
    requirements it will not install.
The reason I say it is not the graphics card, is that my
Macbook has that card and Lion installed without issue.  It
was, however, equipped with a Core2Duo processor.

  • DDR3 Ram are compatible with MSI P45 Platinum motherboard

  • New P45 Platinum build complete!

I got my new system put together last night.
    MSI P45 Platinum
    Core 2 Duo E8500 Wolfdale 3.16GHz
    EVGA GTX 260
    Kingwin 700 w PSU
    WD 10,000 rpm OS drive
    X-fi Sound card
    Zalman 9900 CPU cooler
    Four gigs DDR2 8500 1066 RAM
It started right up, and lit up like a Christmas tree. The bios set some funky RAM timings, so I went ahead and manually set the timings, speed and voltage. I'm running the RAM with what's advertised on the side of the sticks. 1066/2.1v/ 5 5 5 15. I have touched them while the PC is running, and they seem to stay pretty cool. If I run into issues, I will set them to 800 and less voltage. I got Vista 64 installed fine, and am setting up the OS to my liking.
So far the board seems pretty solid. I do notice when I reboot, that I hear a fan/fans throttle back on the RPM, and throttle back up afterward. I will have to look around in the bios some more and see what I can do about that. The instruction book for this board is pretty limited. My other MSI book for my older mobo is allot more informative.
I do notice that both my CPU cores seem to be stuck at 27C. The actual CPU temp fluctuates fine with CPU usage, but the cores don't budge. I read that this is pretty common with these Wolfdales. My brothers build was the same way. I could get them to move if I ran Orthos for awhile. No biggie.
Anyway, I wanted to thank you guys for helping me select my new MSI mobo. I'm sure I will have some questions since this hand book is so limited.

keizer, good to hear some good news. when you have, would you please take a few shot of your bios cell menu for your ddr2 1066 setting [all  of them if you can]  so others can follow.cheers
Well, I think I still have some tweaking to do. I'm having a little trouble on cold boots. Before I manually set up my RAM, I left everything at default. It was running at 1066, but didn't have the right timings. With the default settings, it froze at the Microsoft screen with the little green progress bar. I did a hard reboot, and everything was fine, including all the reboots I did while installing software.
Anyway, after setting up the RAM manually to 1066/2.1v/ 5 5 5 15, I shut the system down and drove into town for a few hours. When I came back, I turned my system on again. It made it past the screen where you can press delete to enter the bios, but just sat there with a black screen after that. I did another hard reboot, and it booted into windows fine.
Any ideas what would cause this? Maybe it doesn't like my RAM settings. I may have to try them at 1.8v/800/5 5 5 18
Also, I wonder if this could be a bios issue?  My board came with 1.2 bios.

  • Doubt about overclocking with p45 platinum

    hi guys
i have a Q8200 processor and an MSI p45 platinum motherboard.
now the multiplier on the processor is 7
    now using a a bus speed of 400mhz i was able to achieve a 400 * 7 = 2.8Ghz on my processor from 2.33
now when i use cpuZ it shows that im currently running at 1600fsb
now as per the board specs 1600 fsb is the maximum.
now does this mean that i wont be able to overclock further ?
i am currently using transcend 800 mhz DDR2 ram
i have the memory divider set at 1:1
so the rams are running at 800mhz
now if i try to further overclock the board, it results in a no boot. i get a single green light and rest 3 are red and the mother board restarts 3 times and then i get the overclock failed message could some 1 advise me on how to go further increase my overclock ?
i have tried to increase my processor voltage and my ram voltage by quite a bit (not over the safe limit though) but still not able to boot :(

    Quote

This just states that Processors that natively run @400 MHz FSB Clock Speed are supported.  It has nothing to do with overclocking margins.
Try this for a quick test:
    - turn off the system
    - remove both OC Jumpers to force the FSB Clock Speed to 400 MHz
    - Clear CMOS with main A/C power cable removed from PSU
See if the system boots and runs stable.  If it does, use the BIOS for further overclocking from the 400 MHz Strap.  As you are forced to overclock your memory modules as well when you raise the FSB Clock Speed beyond 400 MHz try raising the memory voltage to 1.9-2V to see if that helps.
Spread Spectrum should be enabled at all times in the Cell Menu.

The reason for the post here is because I can't seem to overclock my CPU with very much grace without running into BSOD's/Lockups/Reboots and whatnot...I'm even having some issues right now where I have to run the RAM at 1:1 or 1:1.2 (667Mhz or 800Mhz depending)
I guess the other issue I'm having is I have no idea what half of these settings are even referring to and I really hate to admit that...:(
Anyway I was hoping there was someone here with a similar setup that might be able to shed some light as to what I might be doing wrong...tried tweaking the dozen voltage options and whatnot without much success and very poorly describe items such as "Drive Setting 1/2/3/ETC...

What is your current BIOS Version?
Please post a list of the Cell Menu Settings that you have used to far when you attempted to overclock your system.
    For a quick test:
-> remove the two OC Jumpers from there pin headers (this will force the FSB Clock Speed to 400 MHz), clear CMOS with main A/C power cable removed from PSU after that and see if the system will start-up properly.

    Corsair Dominator PC8500C5D 2x1Gb
2 Asus ATI EAH 3870 Crossfire
and it was running with windows XP without any problems.
Problems began when I decided to upgrade to 6Gb of ram and to install Vista 64. Ram modules witch I bought are the same Corsair Dominator PC8500C5D, but 2x2GB.
When i put them together adjust voltage 2.1v and timing 5-5-5-15 they fail mem test with huge amount of errors.
when I test only 2x2gb modules memtest sometimes doesn't open at all, sometimes just stops working on 8 minutes of test. couple of times they completed memtest without any errors.
Can someone advice what should I do and what could the problem?

    1) the modules are not the same (the DDR2 chips are different)
    2) as general rule, mixing 2x1GB with 2x2GB is a bad idea.

  • P45 Platinum, some overclocking experience needed !

    Hi,
I have bought a new computer last winter and been busy with it all the time.. when i bought it i had problems with MY CPU and memory but both fixed, CPU with BIOS 1.4 ( at that point the most recent BIOS ) and memory fixed with the help of some other guy with the same problem and the same hardware.
When all that was fixed and my PC runned stable i began overclocking the CPU by taking off the FSB jumpers so it wouldn't run on 333 MHZ but 400 MHZ FSB.
Now i wanna know if someone has experience with overclocking a Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 on a P45 platinum, my CPU is now running on 3.4 GHZ ( stand 2.83 GHZ )  and I wanna know if a Vmod is nessecary need to get it to.. lets say 3.6 to 3.8 GHZ ?
I also want to know if someone has overclocked his Corsair Dominators above 1066 MHZ and how he did it, because nothing is working for me ( little changes direcly give BSODS etc. )
    Thanks for everyones time,
    Tim

Try your overclock first by setting your memory to 5.5.5.15 at 800MHz. This will eliminate or at least minimise any possible memory instabilities that are more than apparant in the forum when trying the 1066 overclock. If you are succesful, let me know, as I have the same set up, except that I have OZC Reapers. I must say that my 3,4 GHz (I have followed the same route as you via the jumpers) has not encountered a program or game yet that yielded unsatisfactory results. In actual fact my average frame rate in Far Cry 2 allgraphics maxed out runs between 70 and 80 fps. (MSI 9800GTX+). Unless you are running some scientific programs that need speeding up or you want to increase a theoretical benchmark, I wonder if the extra ,2 or,4 GHz will justify the potential temp increase or possible instabilities. But please advise once you have achieved that, what your system settings are what the percentage temp increase is on your CPU. I would be interested as I am too conservative at this stage to go beyond the 3,4.

  • P45 platinum having issues with 8 gigs of Ram

I just put together a new system. When I tried to install windows it kept giving me an error couldn't load winload.exe. I immediately thought I had a bad stick of ram. I ran Memtest with no errors reported. I tried taking 3 of the 4 sticks of ram out and then windowds would start to install fine. I tried every stick of ram this way and it all worked. Putting 2 sticks in is fine also (4 gigs total). Whenever I add 2 more sticks the board goes into an infinite reboot cycle. Having tested the different possible combinations of the sticks and the slots on the motherboard I am at a loss. Also this is OZC memory that is on the motherboards approved list and has been tested with it by MSI. Anyone know of others who have had issues with 8 gigs. Cooler Master 550W PSU (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171025)
And I'm running water cooling for the processor and since I've just installed the Flex EX memory, not sure if I will watercool that or not (since it comes with watercooling heat spreaders).
Currently I have the processor up to 2.7Ghz. 300FSB, memory at 900mhz and timings are SPD'd at 6-6-6-15. Full load CPU temps are in the mid 50C range with idle temps @ 38C.
Every time I try to get higher, like in the 3ghz range, when I restart the mobo goes on and off a few times and then comes up saying that the OC failed. I've loosened the memory timings up and jacked all the voltages up, etc with no luck.
Any experienced OC'ers here have some settings that may work for me? I've read all over that people easily get these processors well into the 3ghz range... I would like to at least get 3.2ghz.
    Thanks!

Ok... so get this... I'm currently at 3.24Ghz 360FSB @ 9X... Memory is 6-6-6-18 @ 1:1 (720mhz)... I don't know if it's because I split the memory so low or if it's because of Spread Spectrum. I saw someone say on another forum to turn SS off... and I didn't realize what SS did... I don't know if it's enabled from the factory, but it was unabled in my BIOS for some reason.. So I don't know if my OC's are working now because I turned SS off or because of something else... I also have the CPU Voltage at 1.4125 and the FSB up...
    My quick question is
What is the "Holy Shite don't go there voltage!!" for the CPU and FSB voltage for my board/cpu???
