P45 platinum + Q8300 oc@3GHz = no restart

Hi,
Like I wrote in the title, when I try to overclock my new Q8300 by changing FSB from 333 to 400, my computer runs just fine (stable) but can't restart anymore. Windows shuts down properly, but computer hangs there (still running but not restarting) and I have to power it off myself (by pressing the on/off button for 4 sec).
I'm stucked the same way when I want to restart from seven, XP SP3 or even BIOS btw
At stock speed, I don't have any problem.
Thing is my previous CPU (core 2 duo E6320) was overclocked the same way (with FSB at 400MHz) on exactly the same computer and I never experienced anything like that.
I read a few threads about this problem. I saw ram compatibility problem (not my case), and someone suggesting increasing vcore a bit (already at 1.33 with BIOS parameter on "auto"). Should I try to raise it to 1.4-1.45? Any other idea on why computer can't restart 
It runs fine after all but it's quite annoying (especially on a dual boot system like mine when you want to switch OS).

Firstly, don't try and compare a dual core with a quad in terms of overclockability. Secondly, there is no guarantee that any processor will OC. Some will, some won't, depends on the luck of the draw.
A couple of things you should do and may want to try.
Read the spec sheet of the processor here http://download.intel.com/design/processor/datashts/318726.pdf before just starting to increase voltages because they sound good based on someone elses experience.
You will see that the design Voltage range for this CPU is 0.85 to 1.3625. So you should try to stay inside those parameters for CPU longevity.
Ensure that your DRAM ratio is set 1:1 as you don't want to exceed DDR2-800. Set your mem voltage to 1,9V to ensure a bit more stability.
Disable your spread spectrum and try your shutdown and boot up process with only 1 RAM stick to check if that makes a difference.
Work your way up from 333FSB gradually, i.e. try 350 see what happens, then 370 etc and determine at what point the problem manifests itself. Check your CPU voltages at each stage and monitor the temps under load with CPU-Z. Run Prime 95 to check stability at each stage.

    My goal is set at 3GHz and to get a lower cpu voltage (lower than my current 1.3175v), but anything below 1.3175v restarts when i stress test using OCCT. I've run memtest and it's ok. Can anybody advise which voltage I can configure to lower my cpu voltage? Also, is 333 x 9 to achieve 3GHz better? Or should I go with 375 x 8? Thanks! Btw, I plan to maintain these settings for the remainder of my CPU's life..  :D

    thanks for the tip. i'm currently logging all my OC settings in an excel file. i just finished played an hour of COD4 without any restarts or instability. currently my settings are just the same except CPU voltage is at 1.344v and i reduced my Dram voltage to 2.0v. running memtest for over an hour, 2 passes already with no errors. i'll stress test it over the weekend.
    i have a question though. a lot of people are suggesting a 1:1 FSB/DRAM ratio. but using 333x9 settings @ 1:1, you get 667.. i'm using 2x 2GB GeiL PC6400 800, that's why i used the 1:1.2 FSB/DRAM ratio to get 800. is it ok to keep using the 1:1.2 FSB/DRAM ratio even though people say 1:1 is the ideal ratio? many thanks for the reply

    hello! I try that,remove both the oc jumper,and I CAN'T EVEN RUN THE BIOS    So after couple restarts, i shut down pc and se jumpers to 200-266 mode. Disable what you said,set fsb 260 x multiplier 11,5 and get 3ghz. Some programs seys core 1 and 2 speed 3371mhz? I set cpu voltage to 1.32, little increase the ather voltages... With max load max temperature with core temp is 63c after couple hours. Should I do something to increase more speed or is better to leave it like this? Or try set jumpers to mode 266-333 and decrease cpu multiplier wuth more fsb?

  • P45 Platinum - Vista works just fine, but unable to get into BIOS

    This is my first build, so I'm still learning a lot. Be kind!
    I'm using the P45 Platinum with an Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0ghz Wolfdale cpu, 2 2gb sticks 1066mhz G-Skill ram, a Corsair 750w PSU, EVGA Nvidia 8800GTS video card, a 74gb WD Raptor HDD and a 250gb WD Caviar HDD (both SATA). I'm currently running 32bit Vista until 64bit has more support.
    I have never been able to access the BIOS - before Vista was installed the splash screen was too fast so I kept missing my oppurtunity to enter BIOS, so I went ahead and put in the Vista install DVD. It installed just fine - it doesn't see my second HDD, but I expected that due to it being SATA.
    I want to enter the BIOS to disable the audio so I can download the new Realtek audio drivers (I have no sound, even after installing the driver off the CD), but when I start up the computer and hit DEL (when prompted), it takes me to the Windows Boot Manager. Several times I have repeated the process and every time it takes me to the boot manager instead of the BIOS. The BIOS is obviously working, I just can't access it.
    Any help is appreciated.

    Simply keep hitting  >DEL< as soon as the Splash screen appears.  If that doesn't help, clear CMOS with main A/C power cable removed from PSU.  Upon restart the system should hold with a CMOS Checksum error and give you the chance to hit F1 to enter BIOS Setup.  Now you can load "Optimized Defaults" and disable the BOOT LOGO.

  • Doubt about overclocking with p45 platinum

    hi guys
    i have a Q8200 processor and an MSI p45 platinum motherboard.
    now the multiplier on the processor is 7
    now using a a bus speed of 400mhz i was able to achieve a 400 * 7 = 2.8Ghz on my processor from 2.33
    now when i use cpuZ it shows that im currently running at 1600fsb
    now as per the board specs 1600 fsb is the maximum.
    now does this mean that i wont be able to overclock further ?
    i am currently using transcend 800 mhz DDR2 ram
    i have the memory divider set at 1:1
    so the rams are running at 800mhz
    now if i try to further overclock the board, it results in a no boot. i get a single green light and rest 3 are red and the mother board restarts 3 times and then i get the overclock failed message could some 1 advise me on how to go further increase my overclock ?
    i have tried to increase my processor voltage and my ram voltage by quite a bit (not over the safe limit though) but still not able to boot :(

    This just states that Processors that natively run @400 MHz FSB Clock Speed are supported.  It has nothing to do with overclocking margins.
    Try this for a quick test:
    - turn off the system
    - remove both OC Jumpers to force the FSB Clock Speed to 400 MHz
    - Clear CMOS with main A/C power cable removed from PSU
    See if the system boots and runs stable.  If it does, use the BIOS for further overclocking from the 400 MHz Strap.  As you are forced to overclock your memory modules as well when you raise the FSB Clock Speed beyond 400 MHz try raising the memory voltage to 1.9-2V to see if that helps. 
    Spread Spectrum should be enabled at all times in the Cell Menu. 

  • P45 Platinum (Zilent) and 1066MHz DDR2

    Hi, I am getting a new PC and as I always do I will be assembling it myself. I ordered the P45 Zilent board and it will arrive in less than a week, along with a 2GB A-DATA Vitesta+ 1066+ DDR2 memory kit. I love the MSI brand, I know it is good stuff, and the P45 Platinum is just a beast... but i read some reviews that say that the BIOS version it comes with it has some flaws. Mostly about raising the FSB and other overclocking, and when I went to the product page on the MSI site and read the BIOS versions change logs i saw that in the v1.3 there is a fix to an inaccurate reading of the CPU temperature in the BIOS.
    I need to state that I have no intention of doing major overclocking on it, at least not for a few years, but I want to set the RAM clocks, frequency and voltages as specified on the Vitesta package:

    # Frequency: 1066MHz
    So what I want to know is:
    1. Will I have problems with the stock BIOS setting my DDR2 kit on the above settings?
    2. Will the stock BIOS read the CPU temperature right, and does it have any serious flaws?
    3. Will it support an E8400 or E8300 CPU, and will the CPU work on 1333MHz (stock) FSB without problems?
    Mostly I do not want to flash the BIOS if it can do what I need it to do, so I just want to know if I will have to flash it to achieve the above. I hope someone has tested the stock BIOS for DRR2 on the settings above, and also tested it for other flaws and may be able to help me with answers. A few pointers on how to overclock the RAM voltage, timings and frequency on this board, and also how to set up the BIOS (if it doesn't need to be flashed) for good system performance and stability are welcome as well.

    P.S.: You may have problem with right recognition of the cpu because of BIOS version (mine was 1.0 at the beginning and with CPU-Z Mobo didn't recognize SSE4.1 and VT technology). Just update your BIOS with 1.4 and everything must be fine

  • P45 Platinum NEED HELP FAST PLEASE!

    As you may have read previously, I was going to and I got a P45 Zilent board along with other parts. Now I have a few problems. Firstly here are the system specs:

    So, when I installed everything, and turned on the PC the DOS looking environment that shows up before the OS is loaded is filled with exclamation marks on the background, and in the BIOS has dots on the background. I thought at first OMG my VGA is faulty, but then in Windows it shows perfectly good image quality and no problems what so ever...
    Second problem: My PC won't reboot. When it goes to reboot, it goes through the shutdown sequence properly, but after that when it needs to restart it just hangs and the 4 indicator lights are all red. Now when it starts normally there is no hang, all the lights are green and system is working fine. But every time it restarts it hangs there and nothing happens... :S
    And third on CPU Z my the PC multiplier varies and also the bus speed is too low... here is a screenshot:
    Now, even though the multiplier changes when PC under load, and I read it is some kind of power saving option, the BUS remains that low :S
    Please help me fast, please.

    There is no real need to disable that function.  After all, it is a feature of your processor, you paid for it and the Multiplier should switch back to default as soon as you CPU gets something to do.  It will only drop to x6 when the system is IDLE to save power and keep the temperatures low.  There should not be any performance sacrifices. Keep in mind that the Core Voltage is reduced as well.  This is all intended to for the benefit of your Processor and therefore for you, after all.
    However, if you really think that you want to disable these functions, you may want a little info on what functions are actually involved:
    1) EIST = Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology -> The option is located in the Cell Menu.  You can actually disable EIST on the OS level (and keep in enabled in BIOS).  All you need to do is to turn off the Windows Power Saving Features and set everything to max. Performance.  This disables SpeedStep/EIST, even when the support is still enabled in BIOS. 
    2) C1E Support (C1E = Enhanced Halt State) -> This feature can only be disabled in BIOS.  Even if EIST is disabled (OS and/or BIOS), the C1E Feature will still be doing its job.  To disable it, look in the CPU Features Section of the BIOS.  You should find an option there.
    In any case, my suggestion would be to keep both functions enabled.  These features are actually rather good.

    The standard DDR2 supply voltage is 1.8V +/-0.1V.  The fact that your memory modules need to be overvolted to have a chance to run at DDR2-1066 MHz shows that they are not "real" DDR2-1066 memory modules but actually just DDR2-800 sticks with a manufacturer's permission to overclock them.  Also, keep in mind that the P45 Chipset does not natively support DDR2-1066 memory modules, but DDR2-667 & DDR2-800 only.
    This said, you actually need to overclock both the memory controller and the modules, which is not necessarely stable.
    To increase the memory voltage, you need to manually adjust the FSB/DRAM Ratio in BIOS to 1:1.6 and manually increase the DRAM Voltage using the +/- keys of your numpad.  Spread Spectrum should be disabled at all times.

  • Msi p45 platinum power up problems

    Hey guys, i have got a fairly new system i think its about 2 months old

    Okay so heres the deal, the computer was running at 3.6ghz, stable for the past 2 months.
    I have tried 4ghz with almost every possible combination of volts, but it passed prime 95 for about 36 hours 1 day, and the next have a random reboot
    I also noticed that my psu was making this weird whining noise so i just ordered and installed a pc power and cooling 750w.
    To my happyness comp booted up at 4ghz and seemd stable enough for 2 hours. (just searching net and stuff) then boom, comp turns off.
    okay so i thought maybe it wasnt stable. tried to reboot but to no avail. all i get is about half a second when my fans try to spin up but then it just cuts off again.
    i have tested the usual out of box, 1 stick of mem, clear cmos with power cord removed, removed battery for 10 minutes but nothing. Also did the same with the old psu which was working.
    All that happends is it trys to start, eg leds everywhere flicker and i mean flicker there is no way i can see what order. Im refering to the 8 leds down the bottom. the flick on then off.
    After trying to start it up once, i wont get another chance to start it. eg i have to remove the power and wait till the power is completly gone from the system b4 i can try again and only have the same thing happen.

    Something may have been damaged during overclocking.  What voltages did you work on when you overclocked the system to ~4GHZ?  What where your temperatures?

  • First boot freezing windows on a MSI P45 Platinum

    I have from the beginning witch first starts the pc windows vista 64 bit freezing . And happening after starting up it after 2 minutes. A time if the computer restart is does good the pc., however, also with heavy work suchrebuild film, or playing games . On my previous mother boards I have never that problem. i have flashed to the newest bios but have also the same problem. have nvidia gts 250 4 gig G-skill 1066 mhz P45 platinum have mother chalkboard nothing is overclockt. memtest carried out and no errors

  • P45 Platinum Posting Issue

    I have a P45 Platinum Motherboard that I purchased from Newegg on the 14th. I recieved it on the 17th and built a brand new system with it from scratch. I'm using an intel E8400 Wolfdale CPU along with  4 sticks of 2GB G-SKILL DDR2 RAM (PC-8500) @ 1066. I'm currently using a BFG 8600 GT graphics card (soon to be a Sapphire 3870x2) and its all being powered up by a Rosewill PSU with 850 watts of power. All items purchased from Newegg (aside from the 8600gt, thats an old card).
    Here is whats frustrating me, and as you can see from the topic's title... my system doesnt post... sort of.
    Technically it does POST however it will only POST if i hit the "Clear CMOS" button located on the back of the system. Upon doing so, the system will act as though its booting up for the very first time. It will ask you to set up your CMOS configurations and once that is complete it will load up Vista right off my Harddrive with no problems.
    However..
    Once the system is shutdown or restarted, the system WILL NOT POST and I am forced to clear the CMOS again!
    Now... I have troubleshooted ALOT with this board... and I'm left with only two conclusions... either this board is defective (highly likely) or it just needs its BIOS updated.
    Ram sticks, video card, HDD, DVD drives... all have nothing to do with it! I can remove all devices and turn the system on with no memory sticks, and I will be left with 4 solid red lights (the ones that turn green after posting) and there will be no beeps of any kind to indicate I dont have memory installed. However... once i hit the clear cmos button then it will post and it will correctly see that there is no memory sticks... it will beep.. I will shut down... I will install devices... turn it on and it will POST.
    It appears it can complete the initial POST without issue, its POSTING for a second or a third time thereafter that becomes the issue...
    I need help with this in a desperate way...

    Let me try to explain a little more detailed:
    A given board/BIOS is not able to read the sticker that is glued to your modules but only the SPD Profiles that are pre-programmed into the SPD Chips of your sticks.  If you check those SPD-Tables with Everest, Memset 3.5 or Memory-Z (in BIOS) you can see for yourself that the "fastest" Profile is a JEDEC-Standard DDR2-800-Profile [CL5 @1.8V].  There is no profile for DDR2-1066 clock speed.  That is why whatever Board or BIOS you try, your modules will be detected and handled as DDR2-800 (PC2-6400) modules.  It is evident, that there is no issue here and there is no point in discussing this any further.
    So, what does the PC2-8500 rating mean?  It means, that G.Skill has tested these modules, which are essentially DDR2-800 sticks, up to DDR2-1066 clock speed with increased voltage.  Basically, G.Skill is giving you a permission to overclock these memory sticks by increasing the voltage above the 1.8V +/- 0.1V JEDEC-DDR2-standard without voiding your warranty.  Therefore they sell these modules as DDR2-1066 RAM.
    If your RAM was "real" DDR2-1066 memory, it would have to be able to operate @1.8V (DDR2 standard voltage) above 1000 MHz.  But in order to be to that the timings your timings would have to be relaxed to CL6 or CL7 depending on the chips used by the manufacturer.  In addition to that, there needs to be an SPD-Profile that tells the BIOS that these modules are DDR2-1066 and that it should set frequency, timings and voltage accordingly. 
    Furthermore, the P45 Memory Controller does not natively support DDR2-1066 modules.  That is why that rating is tagged with an "OC"-mark on the product page of the P45 Platinum. 
    This said, your only option to get these modules to DDR2-1066 speed is to manually set the clock speed and increase DRAM voltage in BIOS.  There is no other way to get there and it is also perfectly normal to do that. 
    Now, let's look at your actual problem:  The system is unstable as soon as you want to overclock your RAM to the DDR2-1066 rating, that G.Skill has promised you.
    There are a couple of reasons that can cause such an instability:
    1. Your memory modules are not up to the task of running at that speed.
    2. Your memory related BIOS settings (especially timing & voltage) are not properly set.
    3. The board is incapable of supporting such clock speeds above chipset specifications (remember: DDR2-800 max. according to Intel).
    4. The board's current BIOS is not optimized in such a way, that it can properly handle DDR2-1066 clock speed.
    I can assure you, that the board has no problems with DDR2-1066 in generell and I suspect that this is simply a BIOS related problem.  I have no issues getting my Kingston HyperX RAM to DDR2-1066 speed with BIOS v1.1b5.

    Of course, I can understand that and it is generally not a bad idea to be careful with BETA releases.  However, in your case I believe the problem is rather BIOS related.  I had stability problems with DDR2-1066 clock speed with different earlier BIOS Versions as well (including v1.0) and I have tested more than 10 BETA- and Performance releaes so far.  BIOS v1.1b5 however allows stable operation @DDR2-1066 MHz.
    If you do not want to use flash this BETA, you will have to wait for an official release which can be expected soon.  This official release will be based on v1.1b5 and it could very well be the case, that v1.1b5 will simply be renamed to v1.10 and offered for download on the product page.

    You can contact MSI Technical Support and describe your problem there as well.  I am almost sure that they will provide you with a more recent BETA BIOS in return (v1.1b5 or later).  If you want to be reassured by an official feedback from MSI Support, I suggest you contact them and see what they have to say. 

  • P45 Platinum hang @ power up

    Hi,
    my p45 platinum wont boot to BIOS. It gets stuck at Memory Detection Test. Cold boot gets it sometimes to "Decompressing BIOS image to RAM for fast booting.".
    I'm not getting any feed to my screen.
    My build:
    Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 (older rev)
    MSI P45 Platinum (BIOS v1.6)
    2x Mushkin enhanced XP2-8500 2GB
    2x Club3D radeon HD 5770
    Thermaltake Toughpower 750w cable management
    I've tried the following:
    1. cleared cmos (many times)
    2. switch the places of the memory sticks and also tried with one only
    3. uninstalled the whole build and then re-installed it (including cpu)
    4. bareboned the build (only cpu, video card and memory sticks installed)
    5. switched the video card (got 2 identical)
    6. tried even without the memory sticks
    The problem is similar to what happened 2 years ago. Back then I sent the MOBO for a warranty service and it came back with a note "No problems found". I also ordered new memory sticks and they didnt help.
    After 2 months of being powered off, the problem just vanished without a trace of what might've happened..
    The problem came back after this:
    I was uninstalling usb device drivers on Win7Pro, and I had to restart the computer because i accidentally uninstalled the mouse and keyboard and Windows wouldnt re-install them even when I changed the usb port of the forementioned devices. After restarting, the motherboard just got stuck with the 4 leds on (which indicates that the processor is damaged or not installed properly). After powering off the computer, I turned it back on, and then the motherboard got stuck to the "Memory Detection Test" phase..

  • P45 platinum gets stuck on Base and Extended Memory Test

    First my system specs:
    MB: P45 platinum
    CPU: Intel Core Duo Quad Q6600
    GPU: Nvidia Evga 8600 GTS 256MB
    RAM: 1x 1GB OCZ Nnvidia PC2 6400 dual channel 1x 2GB Corsair
    OS: Windows XP Pro sp3
    Well my current problem is that when i turn on my computer it gets stuck on Testing Extended and Base Memory according to the LED lights, sometimes if i wait it will start up the system and sometimes it wont, this has been happening for about a week. Also another thing that happens is that it blue screens me sometimes when its starting up and restarts not sure if this is a OS or a motherboard issue. Previously when it was doing the extended base memory test it would reset right there several times even before starting, when it does start i have no issues though, would really appreciate if anyone can help me with this, thanks before hand.

    Got a little(read : big) problem with my pc atm.
    Specs:
    Mobo : P45 Platinum Bios:1.7f? I think, cant switch it on to check...
    CPU : Q6600 @ 3Ghz
    Ram : 2x2g Patriot 800
    GFX : HD3850
    PSU : Thermaltake Toughpower 650w
    Hdds : Unplugged
    DVD : Unplugged
    On Saturday it was fine at the lan I went to.
    Took it to my cousins house to fix her pc. What I did was swap my gfx and ram with her gfx(x1900xt) and ram(1x2g 800 Samsung).
    It basically did nothing, all 4 leds stayed red. Means cpu failure in the book, now my 6600 didnt move so it should be fine. I tried resetting bios, tried taking out the cmos battery, change ram and gfx back. Remove ram, gfx, and cpu entirely so I can hope to hear an error beep, but nothing. Tried a different cpu, my e7400 that I changed for the 6600 and still just 4 red led lights.
    I'm not sure what else I can try, I've got the mobo out on the desk with just the psu, ram, and cpu hooked up. No gfx atm cause I just want it to give me an error post beep.
    I have noticed that all the led lights(blue and red) on the board start almost pulsing after a few seconds of the power being on.
    Does this mean dead mobo? Its about the last thing I can attribute it to.
    I can swap any part if need be(I have already).
    If anyone could help I would be grateful.

    I got the pc setup on the desk in front of me atm.
    All I can do is keep repeating the same string of non-working fixes that I've used before.
    1 : Press clear cmos button on backpanel : not working.
    2 : Use jumper to clear cmos on mobo : not working.
    3 : Remove battery to clear cmos : not working.
    4 : Change cpu : not working.
    I'll be waiting for a reply if anyone has any good advice.

    P45 Platinum updated to bios 1.6
    Intel Q9400 CPU with Xigmatek Heatsink
    620W PSU
    8BG (2x4 slots) Cosair TWIN2X4096-8500C5D PC2-8500 1066MHz
    PowerColor 1GB ATI HD 3670 Video card
    System runs almost fine at the default setting.  As it boot to blank screen a few times.  Hard reset to boot into system fine.  Once a while, system just froze and need hard reboot.  But seem to stable enough (temperature around 26C)
    I wanted to overclock to 3GHz.  But as I just increased FSB from 333 to 340, the system will not boot or it will boot and then locked up after logon to window.   I left everything at auto.  Do I need to set the PCI clock?  It is default at auto.

    Well, the fact that all memory slots are populated makes the matter a little more complicated, but the main problem is elsewhere:  The Intel P45 Chipset natively only supports DDR2-667 and DDR2-800 modules.  In addition to that, your memory modules are not "real" DDR2-1066 modules, but DDR2-800 memory sticks with a permission to overclock and overvolt them to DDR2-1066 @~2.1V. 
    Try these settings to try to raise your memory clock speed farther:
    - Enhance Setting (Try all settings here: "Enabled", "Disabled" and "Auto")
    - DRAM Voltage = 2.1V
    - DDR_VREF_A = 0.955V
    - DDR_VREF_B = 0.955V
    - Spread Spectrum = Disabled
    Usually, the reduction of the DDR Reference Voltages compensates stability problems that are related to overclocking/overvolting the memory to DDR2-1066 on this board.  There is no guarantee that it will work for you, but you may as well give it shot.

    You don't wanna use MSI Dual Core Center for temperature monitoring.  The tool is unable to read/calculate the Core Temperatures of your processor which are based digitial sensors implemented in each processor core.  The data these sensors collect is stored in specific CPU registers that can be accessed by tools like Core Temp, Real Temp, Everest Ultimate and Speedfan (there are more tools of course).  The "CPU Temperature" value shown in BIOS and by MSI Dual Core Center are based on the readings of an analog sensor of unknown location.  It is uncertain, what this value actually refers to and it is also not very reliable.
