P45 Platinum will not boot Server 2008 with 2x2GB...

I was working through the night last night to get my new rig built and installed with the new SP2 of Server 2008 and was having problems that seem to point to the mobo not liking the optimized settings for my 2x2GB.  Hopefully my signature has all the system specs necessary - but do ask if I've left anything out.
What I did:
- Built system with minimal HW:
     CPU & cooler, PSU, 2x2GB (slots 1 & 3), GeForce 8600, 2x250GB SATA2 HDs (ports 7 & 8 for JMicron) , 1xSATA2 DVD-RW
- Got POST and configured BIOS:
     Load optimized defaults, reset time.
- Added Rest of HW, got POST and configured RAID:
     - Integrated Peripherals - RAID Mode:  RAID
     - Integrated Peripherals - On-Chip ATA Devices - RAID Mode:  IDE
     - Save &  Exit
     - CTRL-J:  Built 2x250GB JMicron RAID
- Boot to Server 2008 install DVD
     - Loaded RAID driver and installed to RAID
     - Installation continued (at a wonderfully fast pace), until it hung about 90% through
- Tried re-installing several times, trying things like reconfiguring RAID, using different drivers, etc.
- Then I removed the 2nd RAM in DIMM 3, and re-install completed without a hitch.
- Booted from RAID, configured Server 2008.
- Installed drivers for Intel P45 Chipset, GeForce 8600, Ethernet, and Audio
- Retried having 2 x 2GB in DIMM 1 & 3, and reboot hung during Server 2008 loading bar
     - Tried DIMM in 2 & 4 with same results.  Again, system POSTs with no problem, seeing all 4GB.  But OS hangs on load.
- Ran MemTest on each RAM separately, with no problems after an hour each.
- Put the 1 RAM back in DIMM 1 and used LiveUpdate to successfully Flash BIOS from v1.2 to v1.6
- Reconfigured BIOS (optimized defaults and JMicron RAID)
- Rebooted to Server 2008 successfully with only 1 RAM in DIMM 1
     - Tried DIMM in 1 & 3 and 2 & 4, and again hung on OS load.
- With only 1 RAM installed, the OS flies.  I did lots of application and utility experimentation to ensure all was functional and stable.   Even Defraged the RAID, so I'm pretty sure no HDD problem.
Based on all the forum posts I've read, I'm not sure about why it POSTS but doesn't load the OS, but I bet it has something to do with the mobo being unstable with the default settings for this RAM.  Seems too bad as I tried to pick a decent RAM for future OC potential.
Out of fairness, I should point out that I have not yet tried blowing away the OS and reinstalling with my only other option - XP Pro SP3 - and seeing how that fairs.  My guess is that it too will be unstable.
Fortunately, I'm still having fun tinkering - so no real frustration to speak of.  But any advice on what to do next would be much appreciated...

Finally, in response to RemusM's request, here's the CPU-Z info for Memory, SPD and CPU using the Optimized Default BIOS settings and 1x2GB in DIMM 1:
Then, I spent a late night last night browsing the forums and searching the web.  I found a dude with the same mobo, memory and an E8400.  He was having similar problems and listed some recommended BIOS Cell settings.  I put in my 2x2GB, removed the HW OC FSB jumpers on the mobo and entered the following settings into BIOS Cell and gave it a try:
Multi-Step OC Booster:  Mode1
DOT Control:   Disabled
Intel EIST:  Enabled
Intel C-STATE Tech:  Disabled
Adjust CPU FSB Freq:  400
Advancd DRAM Config:  (all Auto)
Enhance Settings:  Auto
NB Drive Configure:  Auto
FSB/DRAM Ratio:  1:1.00  (1333:667)
Clock Gen Tuner:  (all Auto)
Adj PCI Freq:  Default
Auto Disable DRAM/PCI Freq:  Enabled
CPU Voltage - ICH Voltage:  (all Auto)
Spread Spectrum:  Disabled
Not only did now my system now boot successfully into the OS for the first time with 2x2GB installed, but it seemed stable through my OS config and application installs.  What's more, for the cost of taking the DRAM down to 800MHz, I now had the CPU at 3.8GHz!
Here's the new CPU-Z results:
What's next:
- I need to further test stability by downloading and running some decent benchmarks of some type
- I'd love to get some advice on how I could further tune the above settings for increased stability and even better performance, as the memory and CPU seem capable of more if the mobo is...
Thank you for the input and attention so far.  Please keep it coming...

  • Re: P45 Platinum will not boot Server 2008 with 2x2GB... -l- split

Can I ask how one would go about setting a CAS Latency of 7 or 8 on the Platinum p45?
    I have the same crucial PC2-8500 and BIOS 1.6. I'm happily running the RAM @ 500MHz, 6, 7, 7, 24 (I think!) and FSB 375.
I would love to go further but can't set the CAS Lat' higher than 6 (options run 'Auto' through '6').
I understand PC2-8500 isn't supported by p45 but having read the last post here wondered if it SHOULD be possible to reach this RAM's full potential on the Platinum p45 with such timings 7, 7, 7, 20 or 7, 8, 8, 25 etc??
I have read on this forum that some have had RAM issues with BIOS 1.6 and I will try the 1.7D beta BIOS.
However any help would be appreciated.
    Cheers
    D.

Sorry Henry - I thought it was quite on topic.
    This particular RAM default @ 1067  7, 8, 8, 24.
So when 'Optimized defaults' are loaded the Platinum p45 sets timings of 6,8,8,24 @1067 and thus the system wont boot (The origin of the Server 2008 boot problem no?!)!
The last post in that thread indicates that a CAS Lat' of 7 or 8 could be used.
The question is can a CAS Lat of 7 or 8 be set on the Platinum P45 or is this post simply saying "it could be. On another motherboard"?
    Cheers

dunno, Lynn--maybe Etrecheck. trying running disk utility to verify the status of your hard drive. That may give you a basic idea. Perhaps tech tool pro.  As for it running hot, I can't say for sure. try shutting it down and using a vacuum clearner +crevice tool around the back of it.  It's been my experience that hard drives usually fail without a lot of warning, luckily you have a backup. Afterwards you can say "Yup, that went bad".  I've done a little research and found out that your MacBook Pro doesn't come with a conventional hard drive as such, but an SSD (solid state device) . It's upgradeable (up to 1 TB ) but not cheaply
go here for more info (OWC) :http://eshop.macsales.com. For right now, I'd recommend resetting the SMC/PMU, maybe zapping the pram . to do that, reboot, hold down Apple+Option, P+R keys while rebooting. Hold down for 3 chimes, let go and let it boot. as for the SMC thing....
I'm assuming your battery isn't removeable-shut down computer, plug in MagSafe cable . On built in keyboard, on left side, press Shift-Control-Option and power button at the same time.  release all the keys and the power button. press power button again to turn on computer
    that is all

  • Macbook Pro will not boot up / circle with line in it

Mid 2012 MacBook Pro bought brand new
    OS X Yosemite
    Core i7
    16Gb memory (upgraded shortly purchase)
    500Gb SATA
About a month ago my laptop started running really slow then locked up, I had to hard power down and every since it will not boot up, all I get is a circle with a line through it.
It will not boot to restore DVD
It will not open safe mode
it will not boot to USB
I have removed the memory (2 x 8gb) and tested one at a time did not help
Removed the HDD and tried to boot to DVD did not help
like I was saying above this all happened at once one min it was good then it locked and I have never got the OS to boot up again

I was going to say try single user Command/ S. but you tried that. You say you tried a dvd. What OS was on it. The 2012 Macbook Pro does not come with a bootable dvd, unless you make one . And it has to be an OS that is the same on newer than  the year of the Macbook.  Will it start to the recovery partition by Holding the option key or Option/ R at start. Also your machine is suppose to be able to boot to internet recovery using Command/Option/ R. Did you try that. Need to find out if it's the hard drive or something else. Having some kind of USB external boot drive would help. There is also internet hardware diagnostics by holding down Option/D at start up.

  • MSI K8N2 Neo4 Platinum will not boot - SOLVED!

    Hi
I have just tried powering up my system based on an MS-7125 v1 and it will not boot.
    Symptoms are :
1 long high pitched beep followed by two short ones, followed by two lower pitched tones of similar duration
    D-Bracket - 1 = Red, 2 = Off, 3 & 4 = Green
No display on screen - I changed the graphics card to test that - no improvement
    HELP!
    PLEASE . . .

Please supply us with full info on the system including the power supply and memory.
    PSU = 600W Seasonic S12
    RAM = 2 x 1Gb Corsair Value Select PC3200
All working fine for a couple of years.
Incidentally, I believe that the #2 LED on the D-Bracket may not be displaying red, so the D-Bracket may be trying to display 1 & 2 = Red, 3 & 4 = Green.
I changed the graphics card because that is what the beeps seem to suggest may be wrong - I am pretty confident that it isn't.

  • P45 Platinum does not boot

I just got a net P45 Platinum and I can't get it to boot. All the LEDs are lit but I just get an empty screen. If it does try to start it gives me the safe mode screen but will not do anything when I try to enter it. The only way I have been able to get it going it to hit the magic Bios button in the back. Last time I built a machine was about 8 years ago so I am lost. Any help would be great.

Enter BIOS Setup after clearing CMOS, load "Optimized Defaults" and test the following settings in the Cell Menu:
    - FSB/DRAM Ratio = 1:1.2
    - DRAM Voltage = 1.95V [use the +/- keys of your keyboards numpad to change voltage values]
    - Spread Spectrum = Disabled
    See if that changes anything.
If it doesn't, test the same settings with only one memory module installed (try each module seperately).
    Furthermore:

  • Newly RMA'd msi p45 platinum - does not boot

I had a p45 platinum motherboard RMA'd because it would was not turning on the power supply. MSI swapped the board out with another, which I received on  Friday. I installed the cpu (e5200) and the ram that I had when the other board stopped working.
with the  4 original sticks of ram from my previous build it seems to hang at the bios decompression stage (boot status LEDs)

I there anything else I should test before sending it back msi? I don't have a spare 775 cpu, so I can' t change that out.

This is only speculation on my part, but it is possible the board you have received for the RMA was serviced & set away for shipping with a bios that was current at the time. It may not have 1.6 on it which might explain things.

Only suggestions here, but can you or a local shop possibly test that your CPU is indeed ok on another board? Does anyone you know, or a local shop have a known supported CPU that you can use for testing?
The Antec PSU you have only shows 17A on each of it's rails, the OCZ with 25A is the better choice.

    Motheboard: MSI P45 Platinum
    Processor: Intel Quad Core Q6600
Graphics: Asus ATi Radeon HD 3450 256MB PCI-E
    Ram: OCZ 2GB DDR2

    all suggestions welcome ....
    Thank you so much

it up it does not power up at all....
Take the board out of the case to test it on a non-conducting surface in barebone configuration:
    - CPU (reseat CPU & heatsink)
    - one memory stick in first memory slot (try each stick seperately)
    - video card
    - keyboard
    - power connectors (24-Pin ATX, 4/8 Pin +12V CPU, 4-Pin PCIe MOLEX, 6/8-Pin +12V PCIe (video card)
    Do not connect:
    - hard drives
    - optical drives
    - case front panel connectors for reset, power-on, LED, USB, Firewire etc.
Clear CMOS with main A/C power cable removed from PSU after hardware changes and then try to start the system using one of the following methods (test each):
    1) use the red onboard power-on button
    2) short the two pins that the power-on button of your case usually connects to with a screwdriver

  • Powermac G4 will not boot from CD with OS10 install BUT will boot with OS 9

I have a Powermac G4 which had been running OS 10.38 or 39. The system on start up would sound the tones, the grey screen with Apple logo displays and the rotating clock at the bottom of the screen ultimately freezes and nothing more happens.
I presume that the hard drive is either smoked or corrupted so I buy a replacement drive and Tiger, and go through the following steps:
I disconnect the old drive and try to boot my g4 with Tiger install disks. The start up freezes in the same way as with old disk.
I find my old Panther install disks and the system freezes in the same way.
I then use my 9.2 install disk and the system boots and I get cannot see my new drive.
I disconnect my new drive, reconnect my old drive and re-boot with 9.2 and find my old drive mounts. Big Smile but...
    here is the question:
Since I apparently have a still functional drive, why won't my install CD for Panther or DVD for Tiger not boot this system???? I do have a panasonic DVD/CD writer which is aftermarket if that might be the issue. If so would re-installing the apple CD player make a difference?
(I have also zapped the PRAM)
I am on the way out to try and find a copy of disk warrior to try and salvage my old drive. All help would be appreciated.

I had a really weird problem that might be something like you're experiencing. I was trying to get Tiger onto a "Yikes" PCI G4, and it would not boot up with the Tiger disk.I did everything I could come up with, and no luck. I spent a good bit of time here and over at macosx.com, and no one could figure it out. I finally just re-installed 10.2.8 on a partition, and for some unknown reason, the computer booted with the Tiger disk, and I was able to install. I let the people on the boards know it, but didn't go back to tell them what happened the next day. When I tried to restart, it would only boot into OS9. If I tried to force Tiger (like by choosing it as start-up) it would go to a black screen. Anyway, it ended up no go. If you'd like to go through all the things I did, here's the link to that thread:

I would still like to know if there's some reason some "Yikes" models just can't deal with Tiger.

I am running XP pro w/sp2. i have installed a new dvd burner and a new cd burner. these items where not previously connected to old pc.  I have a MSI-FX5500 video card installed as well. now keep in mind that i already have my old hard drive with XP pro on it, when i go connect all the devices and power on the pc, i am able to go into the bios, it recognizes my 2gigs of corsair memory, my hard drive is recognized, both my cdr/w and my dvdr/w drives are recognized, however, when it starts to load XP from my hard drive, a very quick blue screen comes and goes and i am unable to read the error message. I was wondering is there anyway to slow down or freeze the screen so that I can read the error message? Also, more information about the setup, since i am unable to load XP pro that i already have on my hard drive, I am unable to install the software drivers for either the motherboard or the video card....... Any point of direction would be greatly appreciated. I have built several computers from the ground up before and this is the first time I have ran into this problem........ thanks

since the hard drive was set up on your old mobo then it'll not work straight off on the new one as the details in the registry will be different. One way around it is to boot up off the xp cd and select to install xp and then when it finds your old install on the drive select repair the old installation and this should sort it and will keep all your data thats saved on there.
Once into windows remember to uninstall ALL the old drivers and install all the new ones or problems will arrise and force you into doing a full fresh install.

I opened up the case to find that the red standby light on my motherboard was on but nothing was happening when I tried to start it up. • IMac with 10.6.6 will not boot from external with 10.4.11

My MacBook Pro with 10.6.6 will boot from that same external with 10.4.11 but the iMac does not. Why not?
    1. When the iMac is starting up with the Option key depressed, the bootable 10.4.11 appears normally and can be selected. But when I click on the circle below the bootable icon, the computer freezes.
    2. When I have the iMac running and try to change the startup volume via the Preferences, the bootable icons are present but are not active.
Is there a setting on the iMac I need to reset? Or, is it not possible to boot from the 10.4.11 external?
    Specs:
MacBook Pro Processor - 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo, Memory - 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    iMac Processor - 3.06 GHz Intel Core i3, Memory - 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

The answer is dependent upon what version of OS your machines came with (and the install disks are machine/build specific) - no Mac can boot from a system older than what was supplied with the machine. So, if your MBP originally came with 10.4.x and you upgraded it since, it can still be booted from the earlier version. If your iMac came with 10.6.3 for instance, it can only be booted with 10.6.3 or later.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum Will not boot when SP2 is installed

I installed everything on my pc. Used MSI live update to get everything up to date. I then realized that I didn't do any windows updates (was up to SP1) When I put sp2 on the pc bluescreens after the windows splash screen. I can bring up in safe , vga , and network enabled modes. I didn't install sp2 on the old bios so I don't know if it is a bios issue. Has anyone else had this problem? I need to put sp2 on eventually...... I was thinking that it might be a vga problem but I don't have another PCIX board to swap.

If you have another computer with a CD burner you can slipstream your copy of XP with SP2 (just google XP SP2 slipstream). Then you can just do a windows repair. If you can't I would suggest doing a windows repair anyways but right after you get into windows install SP2.
To me it sounds like a driver conflict. If neither works, you may have to format. Again when you do install windows then immediatly install SP2, then drivers and so forth.
    Good Luck
