P4N Diamond startup problems

I've had problems with my P4N Diamond-based PC since I built it a couple of months ago.  Through excellent help from this forum I eventually resolved the main problem - I was using Maxtor 300GB drives which (due to their staggered spin-up) were incompatible with the Nvidia drive controller.
OUTSTANDING PROBLEMS:
1) Since before then though most boot-ups were taking longer than they should and I traced the problem via the event viewer, which reports disk errors and suggests replacing the drive.  I have tested 5 drives in total (3 different models) and I always get the same error.  I am 99% confident that the reported disk errors are actually motherboard related and I am suspecting that I either need to change the BIOS or the mobo.
But, changing the mobo is my very last resort and I can't see that changing the BIOS from 1.30 to 1.40 will improve anything (and may introduce new issues?) as there appear to only be updates to the Silicon disk controller.
2) Am getting 4 beeps (in total) on startup - (1-2-1) beeps once, pauses, then beeps twice, pauses, then 1 low tone beep.  I have checked the BIOS beep codes page, but am confused about what my beeps mean?
3) PC wouldn't shut down last night, so I had to do hard shut-down.  This morning it took 20 minutes to start up!  This problem appears to be linked to problem 1.
4) My PSU blew (a couple of weeks ago) and I recently got a replacement.  Enermax assured me that it wouldn't have harmed the other PC components.  The problems above were occuring before the old PSU died, but I am unsure whether this could be linked to any of the above issues.
All previous burn-in tests, memtests and hard disk checks have all come back clear.  I think that the starting point is for me to understand what the beeps mean and to see if resolving the beep problems stops the other issues.

 nwheeler,
Well i spent 2 and half hours stright looking for BIOS beep codes for our motherbaord. But the only thing that i found was the same information that is on here. The P4N has different toned beeps, i know that my hearing is not messsed up. I think that i made a pretty exsustive search for it so im still stumped. I even tried the Diamond Forums (there are not that many posts there). You can check that out here: http://diamondclub.msi.com.tw/eng/
There is one silver lining though. I came across a post on another forum board saying that you might get one beep for every USB device you have pluged into your machine. So do a count and see if that has something to do with your mixed code.
In my case i hear the one beep before the BIOS flash screen, from my search that first beep says that everything is fine. But after that i get a high beep followed up a few seconds later by a lower toned beep. As for USB devices i have 2 pluged into my machine...the first being a USB mouse, and the second being a Joystic. Later when i get home today im going to try unpluging them to see if i get a different beep process. Ill let you know what i find out.

  • [875P Neo Series] P4N Diamond - RAID problem

    Hi,
I just purchased a P4N Diamond. I've installed WinXP-SP2 on a single Samsung 70GB IDE disk on IDE1 as Primary Master. Two CD/DVD drives are on IDE2.
SATA-1 and SATA-2 are connected to Hitachi 500GB SATA drives.
I've entered the nVidea RAID utility in Bios by pressing F10 during boot, and established the two SATA drives as a mirrored volume.
After reboot the RAID volume is detected and appear as sync'ed during reboot.
Now comws the problems: I am utterly unable to set these two drives up as a mirrored volume under WindowsXP-SP2:
When I enter Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Storage -> Disk management, both disks appear as separate disks and Unallocated.  When I Right Click to create a new volume, I don't the option of creating a Mirrored volume.
Even stranger thing happens if I now exit everything and reboot: The nVidea RAID utility in BIOS has now been reset to two separate drives.
Question is: What do I do wrong, and how do I get these two 500GB drives set up as one mirrored RAID volume?
    Regards,
    Robert H

    read the raid manual ?

  • [nVidia Series] P4N Diamond raid problem

i have a P4N diamond motherboard with a 3 ghz cpu on. I have setted up a raid 5 with 4 drives on the nvidia raid controller. on the sillicon raid controller i want to have to have 2 sata disks striped. In the sillicon bios for the raid i have configured those 2 drives for raid0 and i get 1 logical drive which i also can see from the bios. My problem is then that when i boot up the computer and begin the installation of windows xp ( and give it the sillicon driver with the F6 button ) then i get 2 logical disks on the sillicon controller instead of my striped raid0 drive.
What do i do wrong? everything looks right for me in the bios. Raid is enabled and the serial ata ports are enabled. Help please
    - Jesper H

problem fixed by using the right silicon driver. the orginal diskette driver can not be used. you need to make a diskette with the raid version of the silicon driver.

  • P4N diamond sata problem

    Hi
I got a big problem with my P4N diamond motherboard, my problem is the nvidia sata controller, when I connect a sata drive in slot 1- 4 the system hangs with a black screen just before windows boots, if I turn on raid the system boots with no problem, but I don’t wanna have raid, I have tried different sata harddisks with the same problem, so I know that is not the drive that is the problem and also if I put the drive in slot 5-6 ( Silicon image controller ) the system boots with no problem
So my question is how do I setup my system right or is there something wrong with the controller
    Thanx

All drivers is installed, and I cant boot with cd-rom or anyting when the harddisk is set to nvraid controller and the nvraid is disable, if I enable nvraid and enable all 4 sata drives and disable pata on the drives the system boots with no problem, but as I don’t want my drives raided, so I got a problem I think there is something wrong with the controller ?
I have tried segate, Maxtor and wd drives but the same thing happens

  • Posible p4n diamond heat problem and other beep question

Hi   was using my p4n diamond for about 2h 30min and it all of a sudden just cuts out with no warning.
im unsure if its heat related thought the constant 55C is not as good temp as i should probably have but it stays stable there.
Also when i recently installed msi core it said i was very close to the voltages it had in the display just to hope to rule out power problems.
i have the cases 120mm exaust fan in the back an 80mm input fan in thefront and then the cpu fan that came with my pentium d 830 .
if its heat related should i get another 80mm fan as an exaust or an 80 mm input fan. i have one more spot on the door of the case.
    ----other beep question--
I was also wondering about the beeps on my computer. when i first was working with this pcc i had no beeps but then when working i had one beep  before os   then two after os and usb case plugs and floppy , 3 when i put on a printer and then back to one and then no  beeps.
are these my beeps going down related to my heat or is this mother board short lived . one beeps soposed to mean that its loading properly
    thanks

regarding your question about target temperature. my board isn't exactly the same as yours, but it's close.
you are right that you can lower the target temp and it will tend to cool the cpu because the fan runs faster at a lower temperature. the way i set up mine was to DISABLE the target temp and that gives the fan full voltage at all temps. that way, the fan rpm will bottom out at 2250rpm (instead of 1100rpm up to the target temp) or so even at lower temps.
also keep in mind that your cpu temp in the bios disply should be a few degrees HIGHER than the temp in "idle windows".
the intel data sheet for the pentium D 8xx series says that the max temp is 69C. so your cpu shouldnt have a problem at 55C.
i ran a prime95 primality test for about 17 hours at 60C to test stability (while using the computer for my normal foreground tasks) and didn't have a problem. i'm NOT recommending this. but i wanted you to know that this cpu doesn't have a problem with temps in the 60C range. and that msi motherboard will stand up to rough treatment.
also, in my humble opinion, i would NEVER run those msi windows utilities. they may be causing you a problem with stability. i use speedfan from almico to monitor temps and i have it set up to generate sound and visual warnings at certain temps. the F1 docs are good. if it were my system, i would go so far as to reinstall windows and format the C: to get rid of core center. i wouldn't even trust the uninstall unless you're good enough to surgically remove it manually.
also make sure you turn off EIST in the bios. it wont impact your temps significantly. that nvidia nforce sli intel edition has a problem with 14x multiplier and pentiumD. and EIST bumps you down to 14x occaisionally.

  • P4N Diamond SATA Problem after Bios Update HELP!

I updated the bios correctly & now my SATA harddrive won't recognize.I put the drive in another pc (with the exact same setup..a p4n diamond etc) and it works no problem. The bios settings are set exactly as they were before the flash as i wrote them down!.
I have noticed there is an extra setting added in the bios ,something in the cell menu named CPU ratio unlock.
I have also noticed that my other pc (the working one) will no longer connect to the net if my network cable is plugged in my router from the pc with the bios update. As soon as i unplug the cable it connects.
I got the latest bios for the board is there something different in the bios from previously i need to do?
Like i says the bios settings i have put exactly the same as they were before the update. My windows (on the SATA drive) booted fine before the update and now it won't.
I updated the bios correctly and cleared cmos afterwards.Everything i should have done i am guessing i done.
Can somebody please help me on this.
    Thanks
Decided to reflash the bios to version 1.4
Now the harddrive is recognised but windows will not boot (blue screen before it boots with the usual to prevent damage to your computer etc etc)
I am now formatting the harddrive & reinstalling windows. It seems MSI have issues with bios updates for this board which they should maybe bring out a new bios fixing this problem as it sure is a problem.

RE flashing the bios.I did this to try and fix a problem with windows not turning off when shutting down.I pc does the other does not & both have the same board and now the same version bios & also a freshly installed windows.I noticed power options in windows are not the same. How can this be.The boards are the same.
Anyway here are the specs of pc1 & pc2:-
    pc1 (the working fine pc):-
    P4N diamond bios ver 1.40
    P4 SKT 775 Prescott 3.6ghz
    2gb kingston ddr2 (dual channel)
    1x 200gb maxtor IDE hd
    2x 160gb maxtor SATA hd
    Ati Radeon x600 gfx
    pc2
    P4N diamond bios ver 1.40
    P4 SKT 775 Prescott 3.4ghz
    512mb crucial ddr2 (1 stick single channel)
    1x SATA2 16mb cache hd
    nvidia quadro gfx
As you can see,not much difference between the 2.

  • P4N Diamond and Pentium D problem

    Hi,
Have just bought the P4N Diamond motherboard, and a Pentim D 830 processor.
When switching on the status led shows four red lights. According to the manual this means that the processor is defective.
Have taken the processor in and out many times, but no luck.
Any other ideas ? Any assembly errors I could have made ?

IJRC, For your set up do the following:
The best way to get your system up to make sure that you have BIOS version 1.3 and up. Any BIOS version before this will not see the Pentium D. If you dont have this BIOS or are not sure it might be best if you call MSI and have them send you out a BIOS chip with the updated BIOS version on it.
-Make sure that you only install windows with one stick of RAM
-Do not connect any USB devices untill windows is up and running.
-Your MOBO takes alot of power, so make sure that you have a quality PSU as well as it having plenty of amps on the 12v rail. (As per the P4N manual p.10, 450watts and atleast 20amps on the 12v rail is recommended for system staibility.)
-Drivers for me were not that much of a problem except for my monitor, but my GPU sees it for what it is and thats what matters. Ofcourse if you dont have the internet up and running getting drivers might be a problem.
    - As long as your follow these steps you should be fine with installing windows 64x. To be safe just download the Marval Lan Eathernet Drivers and burn them to a cd before you start your build. That way you can access the internet to download 64x drivers. For the most part you shouldnt have a problem getting drivers...if you have an hp printer you will have a problem though.
GL and write back if you have problems...i think that i have been through them all with this MOBO and the Pentium D. However with the help from this fourm i think that i have everything under control.

  • All sorts of problems with P4N Diamond

    Hello all
I am trying to get my P4N diamond motherboard to work and I am starting to get pretty p****d off with it. I have built many systems before and on the whole they work fine pretty much straight away.
The first few times I tried to boot the syetem up I got a series of low and high beeps from the board and I couldn't even get into the BIOS set up screen. After unplugging USB devices and network ect I finall ymanaged to get into the BIOS. If I leave my printer plugged in (USB) I get a beep from the system speaker every now and then.
I then tried booting to windows. I have 2 windows builds on my hard drives - both of them crash when I try to boot into them, I have tried safe mode.
I then decided that I would install a fresh copy of windows (even though I only did this about a week ago). I put my windows CD in (XP media centre) and try to go through the normal set up procedure. I I try to repair the current installation or install a new copy it crashes each time it examines the discs.
I then load the drivers that came with the MB as the wondows installer is booting up - I load 3, 2 form one disc and 1 from the other. Now when I try to install a new copy it hangs on please wait.
I have a 400W power supply this one, 2 IDE CD drives, one IDE hard disk (secondary) and 1 SATA Hard drive. FOr most of what I was trying above I had the IDE drive disconnected and was jsut trying to get it to work with the SATA drive.
I think this is something to do with Raid drivers (even though I don't want a RAID array) but I don't know how to fix it.
I was hoping to have this all workign for tomorrow morning. Now I am goign to have to use my slow old laptop for work instead.
I REALLY hope someone can help me with this.

I might have a little bit of insight for you on your problems.
    1. Beeps from your P4N:
You should get one beep for every USB device you have connected to your system.
    2. Windows crashes when installing:
Make sure that you have NO USB devices connected, if have USB mouse or keyboard, get old ones for initial install and then once windows is running connect them, also you can get adapters. Also make sure that you only have ONE stick of RAM in when installing. If you have two, wait till you have windows up and running to install the other. Make sure that you have NO scratches on the back of the CD.
    3. Diamond Clue CODE no good.
Call MSI on this, you are not the only one.
When building a new computer you should always build bare bones to make sure that you can boot with no errors. Its really not needed to have your printer hooked up the first time you are going to boot up your new computer, these are the type on things that cause conflicts. I would try to get things running bare bones here...that means the mininum. Try one hard drive...then work your way up. If you dont want RAID it should be easier for you, make sure that you have the jumper settings right on all drives. ALSO it would help if you would create a sig line (see mine below) with all your hardware. Make sure that you incluse your PSU 12v...you have a dual rail 15 and 14. It will help the mods help you.
GL and post back with ?'s

  • Problem with p4n diamond

Hi i just finished my first computer with this mother board and when i went to turn the power on the first time it would not start except for a few second and then it would shut off. Tech suport refered to my proccessor via website to check proper instalation.  I checked and it was proper and then i  tryed to ask if this was a bios problem and I was asked to pay 10$ for a new bios. msi has already sent me a bios chip when i asked that my revision one would not fucntion with my pentium d 830. is there anything else that can be the culprite with or without being "kindly refered".
    thanks

I figured out why the other drive partions werent showing. turns out  the windows i installed (windows xp pro 64) hides the non partiond drives and make it so you have to go into administrative options to format so that they are viewable. as far as i can see the computer up and running . • [nVidia Series] P4N Diamond (Nforce4 Intel Edition) Problems

I hope some of you have the P4N Diamond motherboard.  I recently picked this up at $250 from Newegg.  Quick ship.  I've never been more depressed about a new flagship product.  Maybe you can help.
It shipped with bios 1.00 dated 04/26/05.  I'm using it with a 530J, X700 Pro, Promise FasTrack sx4000lite RAID5 setup, and PDP PC2-5600+XBLK (2x512 dual channel kit).
With the 1.00 bios, I could not make any adjustments to DDR2 speed or to voltages for DDR2 or CPU.
I asked MSI for help.  I got a 1.10 bios revision (apparently beta).
With the 1.10 bios, I could now adjust the voltages, but my DDR2 speed is still locked in the 800FSB/533DDR2 ratio.  The only way I can change the memory speeds is to change the FSB (QDR) speed and the DDR2 speed changes in that ratio (as if it is set to "linked" in the bios).  This only works when it is set to "manual" for speed control.  If it's set to auto, I can't change anything.  If it's set to linked, I can change the FSB (but not DDR2 although I can see it).  I can select DDR2, but if I press +/- to change the values while in manual mode, the screen just flashes and no values change.
I'm pretty upset, because hardwarezone received a test product directly from MSI and they verify their board WILL INDEED allow for independent FSB and Memory settings.  They have not yet confirmed the BIOS revision they were sent.  The *only* reason I bought this board was to take advantage of the incredibly overclockable DDR2 memory I've purchased (rated to 710mhz@4-3-3-12-1) and because it's the first board I've ever seen advertised to set fsb and memory clock speeds completely independently.  MSI even claims they hit 910/933mhz with this board in testing with Corsair memory (which my PDP memory outperforms on all other reviews, ie tomshardware roundup).
It gets worse.  Newegg apparently isn't getting any RMA support from MSI, as they've set a policy of *returned for exchange of same make/model only* on this product and will not give me a refund (even with a restocking fee).  So, I'm holding a $250 motherboard that is effectively no better than the $100 Asus P5GDC Deluxe I replaced with it (I don't plan to SLI in the immediate future, but somehow I don't expect that to work as advertised either since hardwarezone didn't bother to test it).
All I've heard from MSI fanboys is how great MSI is and how overpriced Abit and Asus are.. so I decided to give MSI a try (the first time I've done that since the days of the first athlon boards they made).
Tell me I've not been fooled by marketting lies into buying a board that does not offer the functionality it's reported to have.  Someone has to have this working... please help me.
Also, I'd be at the diamond member forums, except.. GUESS WHAT!?  The diamond membership card included with the P4N Diamond doesn't work there. :(  Boo.
Newegg and MSI have thus far hung me out to dry.  Maybe you guys can help me.

Thanks for the replies.  I've already tried everything mentioned.  I absolutely cannot change the DDR2 speed at all.  The only way to get the value in the DDR2 speed field to change is by setting the overclock method to manual and changing the FSB(QDR) speed, which updates the DDR2 speed field automatically in the 800:533 ratio.
Am I really expected to be patient when review sites receive cherry picked goods to review that have significantly more functionality than the consumer board I purchased, which is effectively lying to consumers (like myself) to get the $240 price of the board?  I'm not angry with anyone here, of course.  I'm just trying to verify that the problems I'm experiencing are affecting other non-review site owners of the board, so I'll know wether or not I ever want to trust an MSI review again.

  • [nVidia Series] P4N Diamond Major Raid Problems

This is a very hard problem to explain so i will be very basic i can not get raid to run on this board, with the drivers that came with the board windows will set up but then can not reboot! With newer drivers from nvidia windows can not copy files for installation. At the moment i have windows set up on a single drive and it runs fine But i did not spend all this money just to run 1 drive to me this a worthless board if i cant get raid going any one out there have any ideas pls let me know.

    MSi TV Tuner Plus
    4x 80 Gig sata2 hd's
550W Rosewill PSU (I allready know its not the prob!)

Just to be clear, the process you used was:
    1. In the board bios (accessed with the Del key) you enabled the nVidia raid function.
    2. Then you enabled Raid for the Primary and Secondary SATA1 channels
    3. You then rebooted the computer and used the F10 key to access the raid bios in order to configure the drives.
The online manual doesn't talk about step 3 at all. You should be able to refer to section 5 in the english manual from the AMD board if you don't have it in your paper copy:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/manual/mnu/spt_mnu_detail.php?UID=637&kind=1
I would think the configuration should be the same.
Good luck, you've gone past my limited knowledge on these boards.

  • P4N Diamond (blackscreen boot bios?)

I just put together a brand new comp.  All parts are new.
    -P4N Diamond MB
    -650W powersupplu
    -1gb Corsair XMS2 6400 (800mhz)
    -WD Raptor 74gig SATA 10000rpm
    -EVGA 7800 GTX
    -Pentium D 830
Me and my friend put it all together and then connected everything and turned this puppy on.  Thing is all the fans turned on(even the cpu heatsink fan that is powered from the MB) and the light on all the drives turned on.( the graphics card fan was on too)...  But the monitor screen remained black as if it where in standby mode and none of the lights on my keyboard turned on...... Its as if the MB is not recognizing any of the external stuff.
I've been reading the MB manual and i would put in the D-Bracket piece that has the 4 leds but i cant find the JDB1 bracket on the MB.....This is my first comp and i dont really know much about BIOS settings and the such.  I read think i read something about a CMOS button and battery and something about jumping something else...but i really dont know exactly where the part is to be jumpered.
Any in-detail help would be much appreciated.....P.S.  All i wanted to do was play some BF2 on my new blazing comp...but now i can't ... =(

Aaarrrrggggg!!  Well when i called the Tech guy for my new chip on Wed the 14 of Sept and he said it would be send out the next day.  Well i called them on friday the 16th to make sure they had sent it and the guy i talked to gave me a fedex shipping number so i could track it and he said it may take a day for the shippment to get into the system.  So i checked on Sat, and Sunday, and Monday.  Then i was like ....hmmmmm i called today Tuesday the 20th and he said that my part had never been shipped. (Good thing i was in a good mood otherwise i would have..........blown my top)  So he was like, i'll send you a bios chip with version 1.0 on it and....i was like hold the phone... i need bios version 1.3 to get my Pentium D to work.(its like they dont keep a record of the problem..so i had to explain to him the reason why i just didn't want a new bios chip, but one with version 1.3 on it)
Anyways he gave me an order number and I guess i'm going to have to call back everyday to make sure that they ship it.
I guess for anyone getting this board they should order the updated bios chip when they order the motherboard too.  I think i am going to post this on newegg and some other websites under the products reviews.....not to badmouth MSI but to make sure people know what to do when they get this problem.   <-----Is that a bad idea? or a good one?

.....and some details of my problems:
The item is not defective. The problem is with SLI technology in general. As it turns out, an SLI computer is strictly a gaming machine and will NOT run normal application software reliably.
Here are a few examples of application software that will not run:
    Example 1:
I purchased the MSI ATI Theater 550 Pro TV Tuner. I tested the tuner in a non-SLI computer and it performed at a level of quality well above anything I have ever seen before. I highly recommend this tuner. When I installed the tuner in the SLI system, the Windows Messenger failed to run and produced some really strange error messages (Active Movie errors). An attempt to run CyberLink PowerCinema 3 (the application software bundled with the tuner) will totally freeze Windows XP requiring a re-start.
    Example 2:
You can forget trying to install CyberLink Power DVD 6. The installation setup will crash producing a “Catastrophic Error” message during the installation.
    Example 3:
Nero Burning ROM 6 will install and you can burn CDs and DVDs but forget the CD Labeling software. An attempt to perform the following action will crash the application:
Nero Burning ROM -> File -> Print Disk Cover
    Example 4:
LiteOn SmartBurn v3.1.10 is a utility that enables a user to identify the manufacturer, maximum recording speed and other parameters of a blank CD or DVD simply by inserting the blank disk in the drive and running the application. This application will produce a, “Memory Access Violation”.
.... also i can't pull out the memory because 1 have 2X1GB modules.  All of the othe RAM i have is DDR not DDR 2

  • P4N Diamond and Pentium D 930

    Hey guys,
I've just purchased a P4N Diamond Mainbord and i already have a Pentium D 930. I got some questions about the 2 parts. I just read the CPU support and saw that its not supported. Why comes the Pentium D 9XX series are not supported and do i get problems now with this combination? Is there a possible chance that the 9XX series are supported with the next BIOS update? and last question, does it work together ( can i get screen with the boot ), because i first bought a ASUS P5LD2 but that didnt work to ( there was no screen with boot ). Can someone pleas help me out? Thnx anyway!
    The Pime

It's because NVidia chipset doesn't support Presler/CedarMill processor like 930. Whether when will it be officially supporting, or never be is unknown. Too bad. Can't help you much.
