P4N SLI-FI boot problem

I just assembled a PC with an MSI P4N SLI-FI motherboard, P4 3.2GHz CPU, 2 pcs Kingston 512MB DDR2 PC533, MSI GT6600 PCI-E card, 480 watt HEC PSU, LG DVD combo drive and a Samsung 32" LCD TV for monitor.
After doing a Live Update on the BIOS, the system hangs on boot-up (no beeps, no video). The LED on the D bracket 2 says: Testing Base and Extended Memory. (It is stuck red on the two left most LED's).
After a couple or more hardware reset, the system will then proceed to boot.
I did a stress test using BurnInTest and everything passed including the memory.
Is there a possibility it is the PSU, or a buggy BIOS? Should I restore the old BIOS?

When it hang, meaning you see nothing on the screen? This sounds like ... hmm... your 3.2GHz P4, is it a Northwood or Prescott or Cedarmill?
It could be power supply but it could be something else, such as RAM. HAve you tried to set DDR voltage to 1.9V instead ?
Yes, nothing on the screen. My 3.2 GHz is an Intel 640 (I do not know the name)
I ran a stress test (burnittest) after booting and everything is reported PASSED, did this test several times. I also changed voltages on the DDR, NB etc. and same problem, I have been playing with the unit for three days now...
I transferred the RAM, PCI-E Graphics card and CPU to my Shuttle XPC and it worked fine. So it could be the PSU or MOBO...
I just checked the specs on my HEC power supply, and the 12V1 is rated at 17A and the second rail of 12V is rated at 15A, I remember reading on my MOBO manual that it requires 18A on the 12V rail! Could this be it?

  • P4N SLI-FI Raid Problem

Fired up the mobo and configured the Raid Bios with 2 identical HD Maxtor 160GB SATA2 in striping mode (RAID 0) and striping block optimal. The array was successfuly created and proceeded to install the operating system (Windows XP).
After i specify the NVIDIA drivers (NVIDIA RAID CLASS DRIVER & NVIDIA NForce Storage Controller) the computer stays at the Windows setup screen mentioning "Setup is starting windows" doing nothing else.
I tried to install on a normal P-ATA HD and everything worked fine.
    Any ideas someone???
    PS.
The configuration i use is the following:
    CPU: Intel P4 3.4Ghz M650
    MOBO: P4N SLI :P
    RAM: 2x1GB Modules DDR2 533Mhz
    VGA: NX7800GT PCI-E
    PSU: Herolchi 550W +3.3V@32A +5V@38 +12V1@18 +12V2@17

For P4N SLI motherboard, its SATA 1-4 port are controlled by NV Raid controller and its SATA 5, 6 port are controlled by MCP404 chipset.
If you connect to SATA 1-4, you should go to BIOS->Integrated Peripherals->nVidia RAID Setup to enable the related item.
If you connect to SATA 5,6, you need install the Silicon RAID driver and go to BIOS->Integrated Peripherals->Onboard Devices Configuration to enable the Onboard Silicon RAID Controller.

  • P6N SLI FI boot problems

Before I start just want to let you know that I'm a little pissed off so forgive me if I leave some details out. Ok, I have two hard drives, 250gb sata with XP and a 80gb with Vista. I rarely use my Vista HDD, I mostly use it just to check on vista stuff. I tried to get on it (changed it to first in the boot sequence) and it won't get on it, it just goes straight to XP. I was like oh well, thats just a problem with Vista. So i reinstall Vista, boots great everything is peachy. But then when I try to go back to XP, well what do you know, its doing what it did to me before, wont let me get onto XP. I have tried completely unhooking the 80gb and it says there is no boot device bla bla bla. I don't know what to try now, short of doing something with the bios (updating or flashing.) I'm probably going to do that now but I was hoping someone on here could help me.
    Thanks,
    Nick

read Moan Guide and provide full system specification.
"I have two hard drives, 250gb sata with XP and a 80gb with Vista"
"I have tried completely unhooking the 80gb and it says there is no boot device bla bla bla"
"I also tried to force it to boot from my sata (pressed f11 and chose it) and it still didn't work."
ensure that you have active partition on that HDD.
    Ok I'm running....
    Core 2 Duo e6600 @3ghz
    2gb DDR2 Memory
    8800gts 320mb OC Edition
    P6N SLI-FI
80gb Western Digital IDE HDD (Back up)
250gb Western Digital Sata HDD 16mb Cache 7200rpm SATA 300
Yes there is a partition and a OS on it. I can access files on it through Vista on my 80gb HDD, well after the annoying task of getting permission for everything. I was just booting from it before I installed Vista again so I know its nothing wrong with that. I know if I reinstall XP again it will let me boot from it but I don't feel like having to reinstall the OS everytime I want to switch HDDs.
Pressing f11 at the post screen gives me a list of my storage devices to boot from and that still doesn't let me. I know the XP is fine, it just won't let me on it.

  • K8N SLI Platinum boot problems

    Hi there everyone,
I am new here so I am sorry for any mistake I make while setting up the topic.
Anyway, I have just bought this board but I have experienced some problems. When I turn on my PC it sometimes doesnt boot and halts on POST and sometimes when the logo of Win appears.
I dont know what to do . I have already loaded the latest BIOS, I run without overclocking but I still have these problems.
    Here is my setup:
    A64 3000+ (Venice)
    Gainward 7600GS
Fortron 350W (20 pin and here could be the problem, coz mobo has 24pin)
    2x512MB DDR PQI
    Audigy 4
    TV card Leadtek
    80GB Seagate
    Thanks for any help guys....

OK, guys, I guess you are right.
But I was to a website (I dont remember address) where you could compute the power supply you need according to your parts in PC and I had something about 240W so I hoped my PSU would be enough
Well, anyway thanks for help and I am going to shop for new power supply
//EDIT: I have P-ATA HDD and it is always detected. It gets stuck sometimes before HDD detection, sometimes after it and sometimes during the WIN logo....

  • MSI K8N SLI FI Boot Problems

    Hi All
Im new to this forum and Im hoping you guys might be able to help me out with what appears to be a simple enough problem.
I recently decided to do another self build project and aquired a few new bits and bobs. Everything was going great and I did a barebones boot to the bios configuration screen. set a few settings...detected the HDD etc but when I saved settings and rebooted all I got was to the XP splash screen and the system rebooted. I got a slight flash of the dreaded blue screen of death before the reboot. I went back to the startup screen and disabled the reboot on failure option so I could see the error message. I had a look in the microsoft kb and came up with this header.
You receive a Stop 0x0000007B error after you move the Windows XP system disk to another computer
It basically says that the windows registry and drivers is not configured for the new mobo(the bios is different manufacturer). I dont want to have to change my HDD or lose all my data so is there a way I can install drivers for both Bios prior to swapping the HDD over to the new comp??  Microsoft has suggested either the new HDD and complete XP install or doing something called a registry merge which looks way complicated and pretty dodgy.
Anybody any ideas?  surely this must have been seen loads of times before.
    Cheers in advance.
    S

Well you have given precious little informnation of the hardware in your system, in particular the previous board/chipset; you may however be able to get away with a repair install of windows.  You will not lose any programs or data but will have to download windows updates again.  Would be less troublesome if the disk had SP2 integrated.

  • Major MSI K8N SLI no Boot Problem

The other day I noticed in CPU-ID that my CPU was running only at 1125mhz or so. This is because the Multiplier was set at 5x, which I thought was strange. I went into the BIOS and reset it to 11x (have a winchester 3500+ CPU) and rebooted...still was only getting 5x as the multiplier. I know that Quite and Cool was disabled also in the BIOS so that couldnt have caused it. I then went into Clockgen and set it to 6x, with no problems, then went to 10X where I got a beep from my PC speaker and BSOD. I tried rebooting the computer after this and well it doesnt do anything. It powers on and I have 4 red LEDs' on the Troubleshooting bracket. So far I've removed the CPU and reseated it and tried clearing the BIOS, though the BIOS reset button on the board and removing the battery for an hour or two...with no change in the LED's. I tested the CPU in another system, and it works fine, since the troubleshooting bracket said that the CPU migth be the cause. I checked the voltage off the PSU (Maddog 500 or 600 Watt PSU) and they are checking out alright.
Any outher suggestions or is it time to RMA the motherboard?

Try it disconnecting the power connector from the MOBO for a minute and then put it again and start the system...
    Did that..no change

  • MSI K8N/Neo4-SLI Cold Boot problem

Sup guys, my system won't restart whenever I crank the HTT to 239+. I heard it has something to do with the nForce4 chipset but I don't know how to fix it. I have the latest BIOS, chipset driver, video drivers, the whole she-bang, but still nothing. I'm currently running my 3000+ Venice @ 2151mHz (239x9) w/ a 4x HyperTransport multiplier (1.450vCore), 512mb x2 Corsair Valueselect @ 166 Mem index (default voltage) 2.5-3-3-8. Thanks.

I used to have corsiar vs and it wont go much higher for you...the stix just crap out after a while.  If you want more, you have to go with more expensive mem stix like crucial ballistix or patriot xblk/other tccd mem.  Just my 2 cents.

  • [nVidia Series] Problems with boot time for p4n sli

I have spent a couple of hours digging trying to find out some information.
I bought the p4n sli (not diamond) and everything seems to work fine, BUT the boot time is very long.  It seems to try to access the dvd drive for 30 to 45 seconds and then it will boot.  Once it starts to boot I get 4 error code beeps and one that sounds as if it would be the normal everything is good beep (the fifth beep is always different and usually in the middle of the four same tone beeps).
I have a intel 630 cpu, a nvidia 6800gt vid card, one gig of corsair dual channel memory and 1 gig of geil dual channel memory (I get the same errors without the different memory), I have a 450 thermaltake psu, a maxtor 120 gig sata drive and a 160 gig ide drive.
I have no problems with anything once the computer is booted up.  It just takes a lot longer to even start to boot than I have seen with modern computers.
The beep codes thread stated that
4 beeps - Timer not operational - bad motherboard
5 beeps - Processor error - bad processor
Would I still be able to run this computer if either of these was true?  I would love any advice.  I do not want to burn up anything.

    hey LtDano38,
Im sure that the beeps that you are hearing are on account of the amount of USB devices that you have hooked up. You should get one for every device, the low tone one that you hear is the bios beep saying that everything is normal. The USB beeps should come before the different tone one at the end.
As for the boot time, i would try a different cd-row to see if it does the same. Also is the drive IDE or SATA?
    GL and post back.
ok, I do have four usb devices, a flight stick, a nostromo, and usb mouse and keyboard, I have one ide hd, one sata hd and an ide dvd.  I tried slaving the dvd off of the hd and with it by itself on the other ide channel.  My os is on the ide hd.  One last question, can I use anymore abbreviations?

  • P4N SLI-FI Intel Edition Memory Problems

Ok Im new to DDR2 but this just seems like something is not right. Ok so I have the P4N SLI-FI Intel Edition Mobo. Flashed to newest bios as of 01/23/06 Ok so the ram comes up in bios as ddr2-667 but when I boot to windows it clocks down to 333mhz effective clock and 167mhz real clock, giving me a 5300 bandwidth( checked with everest ultimate edition). Also this ram is Corsair Value Ram rated at 667 ddr2 pc5300. I am running a 1gb dual channel kit I had bought from newegg. I looked on the internet elseware and found somthings about speed ratings and such but nothing that tells me straight up if 5300 should be my bandwidth, I have 14 years of computer experiance and common sense tells me that my bandwidth should be 10.6gb. Again ddr2 is completly new to me. Also I have read that pc5400 solves some problems in other boards not sure what they ment by problems but I was thinking maybe I bought the wrong ram, also on msi's website I checked the pdf file for supported ram and again I did NOT see the ram I had purchased but that means almost nothing as they leftout alot of major brands of ddr2-667 and other speeds aswell.
I am really pissed off at this point. I can tell my system is slow, boot up times are longer then my Amd XP3200+
Also another problem I am having is that the Nvidia GbE Lan is not working at all. Checked the bios and its turned on still no go. I had to put a Lan card in to even get online. This is not as important as the first problem but still annoying.
    Thanks for your time.

I mean it sounded kind of like it was correct but, in windows I expected something to say ddr2 667 and all the programs I am running label it as ddr2 333
Even my everest ultimate 2006 and sisoft sandra say its ddr2 333, the benchmarks that do come with those programs show other peoples ram running at ddr2 667
Also the comp just seems slow windows loads in 5 bars (the thing at the bottom when booting) and then another 30 secs after that.
My other comp an AthlonXP 3200+, 512 ddr400 DC, 40gb ide hdd, 9600xt) loads windows in 1.5 bars and instant to desktop with older technology.
The games dont seem to be loading fast at all either. Basically I am very dissapointed in the performance of ddr2-667 its not faster than ddr400 by any means and if its the board then im really heated because this board should fly, funny how I read reviews on the board before I buy it and they said it was all good, then I find more in depth reviews that really say this board is below average.
Could it be possible that ddr2 5400 would be a better choice because the board cant support ddr2 5300?
Again thanks for your help guys im just dissapointed in the performance, sucks after spending $450+ and the video card is the only on par piece I've gotten.

  • K9N2 Diamond & SLI Boot problem

Hello. I have a boot problem in my mb. My sli config is with 2 Gigabyte 8800 GT. I can enter windows and sli works fine. The problem is that i only have image in windows. I can't see post, so i can't access bios. Only when windows starts i get image. Tried the cards in a MSI K8N SLI Platinum and i had no problem. Image since i turn on computer. The cards in solo show image like in the MSI K8N. In bios i have the Hybrid SLI disabled, tried disable on-chip VGA but the pc won't boot. The customer service told me to update bios to version 2.3. I think that might be a bios beta version, i only know 2.1. There is a v2.2 to support the AM3 cpu's. Help !!

try to change the battery on your motherboard to see if it help. I believe that your battery of the motherboard is so weak so it won't able to show the POST.
The battery on the mainboard only powers the CMOS so it can store the BIOS settings. If the battery is failing, it will still start up, but BIOS settings will need to be re-set.

  • Dead P4N SLI...4 Days Old

    Hi
My new mobo died after 4 days out of the box and I could use some advice as I'm going to have to figure out what to return to the online company that I purchased it from. Could it be the processor?
    I put together a:
MSI P4N SLI mobo with a 3ghz Celeron and 512mb chunk of Geil 667 RAM with a 480 watt Mutant Mods PSU. Yes, the RAM is in the correct slot.
After 4 days (24 hours a day) of operating fine, yesterday I was talking on Skype and my machine went cold, lights out.
Tried rebooting, can hear the CPU crunching, fans and lights working, DVD drive blinking, hard drives are humming but monitor remains in sleep mode and there are no POST beeps to be heard. Tried resetting the CMOS, nada...no luck. Tried booting a few hours later and the monitor came on and I got into the BIOS so I let it sit like that. After a few minutes it died again. Does this mean anything to anyone?
Would a dead CPU prevent the BIOS from being accessed or is the BIOS able to operate without a CPU?
Would a dead mobo be able to boot again but only for a brief time?
    Argh!!!!

hcoshawn, I think you just solved the problem.....I'll wait it out and see what happens
On the board, just about the top PCIe slot, there is a 4 pin molex connector to add more power to the board, in addition to the 24 pin main and the square 4 pin ATX. When I originally built up the system, I had this hooked up and then removed it thinking that I'd only need it there if I have a vid card in that slot and it worked fine...for 4 days. Anyway, I tried putting if back just now after reading your post and although there are no hard drives hooked to the board right now, with all the power connectors stuck to the board, she booted up and gave me a single POST beep, which for this board is a positive POST.
I'm just going to let it run for awhile and see if it shuts down again, but she is purring like a kitten now..
Any ideas why it would work for 4 days without this connector and then just stop working? I think it could be that I installed the nVidia drivers for the board on that 4th day and that initiated a call for more power from the board....not sure.
I am sofa can we todd did! :D

  • MSI P4N SLI E -F

    Hi all,
I've recently purchased a new Msi p4n sli xe -f mobo (no idea what the f stands for) for my new setup and i've already run into a problem.
After building up my machine and turning it on the leds on the backplate do the usual flashing and then it sits there with leds 1,3 & 4 on red and 2 on green.  I've checked in the user manual which says it's a memory problem so today i went to PC World  and bought a single 512 strip of ddr2 533 to test this out.
I installed the new memory but the same problem persists, does anyone have any idea's?
I've used a standard PCI graphics card to allow me to setup the bios and windows before i buy an 8800gtx card but haven't been able to do anything because of the problems i've described.
The rest of my setup is:
    Msi P4N SLI E -F Mobo
    3Ghz Intel Pentium 4 Processor 530J
    (Now) 1.5Gb ddr2 533mhz ram 2xKingston 1xPny
250Gb Western Digital Sata 2 HD
    Liteon SHW-16H5S-15C Light Scribe 16x DVD+ - RW
    600W power supply
    Anyone?

Try booting with only the following hardwares:
    CPU + HSF
    Mainboard
1 x RAM each time swapping out upon posting failure
    PSU
    Low end GPU
Feedback the results and I'll try to verify what is the best alternative you can do.
To clear CMOS with jumper can be easily achieved by taking the mainboard's battery out for 5 - 10 secs and placing it back in place.
Ok, i've done that and i get the same problem no matter what i try.
The gpu is as minimal as it can get, it's a pci (not express) graphics card based on the early nvidia chips that i borrowed from a friend and it works ok because he tested when i was at his prior to me installing it into my machine.
A maxi gamer cougar or something like that. i know it was an nvidia card anyway.
I've tried contacting Msi through their technical support email and i got an automated reply saying that they were dealing with a number of other cases and that they would reply as soon as they could...........that was over a week ago now.

  • Cold boot problem with X-FI Fata1ty card... Need serious help!

    Hey guys:
I just finished upgrading my computer. Realized that I have a cold boot problem. In order to identify the source of problem. I began the following test.
. Remove everything except, cpu, heatsink, ram, video card. Tried to boot with those devices. => No cold boot problem.
    2. Install the rest of the ram sticks (I have 4 x 52 in total). => No cold boot problem.
    3. Install the other video card (my setup is 7900gtx in SLI) => No cold boot problem.
    4. Install the Creative X-FI Fataty card. => COLD BOOT PROBLEM
Once the computer is shut down via the front power switch on the case, the computer will not boot again. To boot the computer, I need to switch off the main power switch on the back of the psu and switch it back on; then turn on the computer via the front power switch on the case. I tried the problem with and without the sound card. Whenever the sound card is installed. There is the problem. If there is no that sound card in my rig, then there won't be any cold-boot problem.

The onboard sound is disabled. Unfortunately I sold the Seasonic PSU to my friend. The OCZ GameXStream is suppose to be the higher grade psu than Seasonic PSU. Also, the cold boot problem only exists if the sound card is plugged to the motherboard. I tried change different pci slot. It doesn't seem to help the problem. • Poll: Do you have cold boot problem with SB X-FI Fatal1t

    Hi guys:
I have post a thread regarding the cold boot problem with SB X-FI Fatalty and OCZ GameXStream 600W SLI power supply combination. Apparently, no one has answer to that . In addition, I have recently RMA'd my psu and received a brand-new unit. The same problem still exists. If the problem is really with the power supply, doesn't matter what kind of the setup I have, I should still have the cold-boot problem. However, it doesn't seem like that. Doesn't matter what kind of cards I put on the motherboard, as long as the SB X-FI Fatalty card is there, there is cold boot problem (even with the setup of cpu, mother, ram, and the sound card only, WITHOUT video card and harddri've). And for other different setup without the SB X-FI Fatalty card, there is no cold boot. The cpu and memory are running at stock speed.
My post regarding the cold boot issue:
    http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=soundblaster&message.id=79753
There is one user on the forum saying he has the same problem. Therefore, I think it might be the imcompatibility between the X-FI Fatalty and OCZ GameXStream PSU.
I would like to know how many people that has the same problem that I am having. So I can possibly narrow down the problem and contact OCZ tech support or creative tech support with more information. It would also be benefitical to those who have the same problem as I do.
Please post your system setup as well in the thread.
Greatly appreciate your opinions. Message Edited by White_Hair on 2-02-200604:58 AM

I would venture to say that it isn't your powersupply, but more likely the X-Fi. I had troubles with my system, until I pulled out my X-Fi and replaced it with a non Creative Labs sound card. One of my troubles, which I incorrectly blamed on my powersupply was the ASUS A8R-MVP motherboard I had and the X-Fi XtremeMusic card, was after gaming for 4 hours, was the?sudden reboot of my system. Powersupply before, was an Antec TrueControl 2 550watt PSU. As it stands right now, I no longer have the parts mentioned and have a decent 700watt powersupply in my system, along with an ABIT AT8 32X motherboard. As you have probably seen there are a lot of problems with the X-Fi soundcards, and I in my right mind can't blame the motherboard, powersupply, motherboard chipset, ram, or any other component in ones system, if one is having trouble other than the X-Fi itself. I'll be honest, there is something quite frankly wrong with the X-Fi, and exactly what that is, I'll probably never know like most people.

  • MSI P4N SLI, Long wait before BIOS post? (nForce 4 SLI Intel)

Does anyone else have a P4N SLI? Or maybe you might just know anyway...
Everytime I boot the PC, before the BIOS POST even starts theres a long wait (insanely long, compared to other PCs and mobos I've had and used) around 45 sec to a minute, where nothing is shown on the monitor and the DVD and CD drives are constantly read (even though theres nothing inside em). Then the BIOS post comes and the rest of the whole process is fast as I could wish for....
Is that normal with the P4N SLI or maybe even with nForce motherboards?
If not, any ideas what it could be? (I tried stripping my pc down to barebones, minimal RAM, no extra cards, 1 hdd and 1 cd drive (and even without the cd drive) yet still it takes the same amount of time...)
    Please help...

    Do you mean
    1GB, 512MB, 1GB, 512MB?
    Sorry, ya thats what i meant, 2 GB was a mistake. Its 1 GB, 512, 1, 512.

As stated before. Remove the 512meg sticks. To run properly, all sticks should be the same. Reason is due to timings and voltages. Also try to up the voltages to the cpu.
I removed the 512 sticks before, like I said, and I'm just running with the 2 x 1GB sticks, it hasnt had any positive effect on the long wait before POST. The voltage for the RAM is 1.8v right now as according to the BIOS, is that the correct value?
Did I mention that during this long wait my monitor is in sleep mode, then 1 short beep is heard, the lights on my keyboard reset as is usual on any PC and the BIOS does its POST (if i pause after the keyboard lights, its usually auto-detecting my HDDs, and optical drives). It's strange because during that long wait nothing is happening other than my cd drive and dvd drive intermittently flashing and my HDD light is constantly on....
The strange thing is this same setup was working perfectly fine on my old Intel D915GEV motherboard... and it also runs perfectly fine on this mobo too, once you get past the 1 minute+ waiting time...
