P67-G45 won't overclock

Hello. I have a P67-G45 that I bought several years ago. Lately, I have been trying to overclock my CPU to about 4.2 ghz or so. Being new to overclocking, I made many mistakes at first, but I think that I have the hang of it now. I set the CPU Ratio to 42 in my BIOS and set the voltage to 1.3. After tweaking a few other things according to a tutorial on an overclocking forum, I restarted my system and opened CPU-Z, RealTemp, and Prime95 to test it. However, when I run a Prime95 test, for some reason my CPU ratio will not go above 3.9. When not running Prime95, it breifly can go to 4.0 or even 4.1 sometimes before going back down to an idle 1.6 or so. What is going on? According to the control center, everything is set to 4.2 (well, 42 I guess), but the multiplier is staying at 39 maximum when running a stress test. You can read this thread over on another forum with full details of my overclocking experience thus far here :http://www.overclock.net/t/1542410/overclock-i7-2600k
And here are my specs:

It's common to suggest to upgrade BIOS. I recommend not to unless it is essential, and reading the comments on manufacturer site do no harm either.
There are two ways to OC SandyBridge and above CPUs, one is change the clock, and the other is change Turbo settings, so lets try that way.
Load optimized defaults, change vcore as before then set all cores boost ratio (in CPU Features) to 42 (Turbo must be enabled). On my board is enough if I set 4 cores to 42 but would be safer to begin with all of them at 42.
Try with OverSpeed Protection disabled, or enabled and power limits 130 for short and 120 for long.
My CPU runs 4 threads of Prime95 (v28.5 AVX) at about 100W at 4.2GHz. So maybe for testing only, disable hyper-threading.
Another thing may be insufficient vcore maybe? Not sure what safe vcore is for 2600k, so look it up before increasing.
Ok, I tried this all and still got the same results. I enabled Turbo, then changed all the values that you suggested with the ratio at 42 and vcore at 1.3. When running 8 test threads in prime95 I still only get up to 3.9. I tried again, enabling enhanced turbo, but it didn't change anything. The only thing that I did not try was disabling overspeed protection, and I'll try that now, but if it doesn't, what is going on?

  • MSI P67 G45 (B3)

Hello. I am using MSI p67-g45 board for almost 3 weeks.
    intel 2500k cpu
    ripjaws 4gb ddr3 1600ram
    2x sapphire vapor-x HD5850's crossfired
    2x samsung f4 raid0
no problems so far but one. tmpin #1 (PCH) gets crazy hot. even with stock cpu timings and settings without any extra stress, it reaches 85-90degrees and its not misreading its for real, you feel it when you touch or you can actually see how it affects the first card on crossfire. I have a case with very good airflow. in fact motherboard PCH is the only component breaks 60 degrees celcius in whole system.   graphic cards only peaks to 58 while playing bc2, cpu stays max 55, airflow is great but when I check HWmonitor temps, I can see PCH (TMPIN#1) is 90 or 100 c... IF I overclock the crossfired 5850's a little, it reaches 110-120 degrees celcius.. so, my concern: is this a bad mobo which I should return? or all p67 g45 is the same?
another member asked a question like this and some admin said "re apply tim".. well I dont wanna break its guarantee or just break it. Its obvious that I am not the only one having this issue. This board has temp issues or PCH probe reads crazy temps.. which is true and what should I do please make this clear for me. I dont want to return it since its flawless with overclocking and all other good stuff. but this temp is a no-go. I dont want something 100c in the case while all other components are 40-50c. Thanks for reading.

so you are saying its completely normal? im sure its nothing like 100c or 120c as you said. probably misreading. but the gfx card on top (first one of the crossfire cards) is almost 15 degrees celcius hotter then the bottom card most of the time. plus, top card uses better-bigger-heavy cooling. at least I can guess is the PCH heating up the first card since its right next to it. I mean second card is smaller 5850 Xtreme version which is cheaper too. I used them before in a P45 rig with c2duo system. temps never reached 50c at first card while idling. so the possible scenario is: gfx heating up PCH and PCH heating up gfx and I cant do anything like moving the card to second slot cuz im already using bot of them at crossfire. while gfx covering the PCH I cant place a fan on it too.
I've tested the temps in some scenarios. First, I only stressed CPU with prime and while cpu kept 55c max (stock timings), PCH gone to 67c in 1 hour maximum heat torture test. I can say HWmonitor is reading faulty PCH temp but not. Cuz when I touch it, its really hot. nothing like 40 or 50c, its hot as hell and guess what, GPU1 temp never go down from 55 at idle. second card was 35-38c tops. there were no load on both cards since they were idling at windows.
Second thing, I stressed CPU with prime then I stressed both GPU's with furmark. TMPIN#1 went crazy like 90c's cuz the first video card was at 80c while second one kept it 70. I will make another test. I will replace the better cooled card with 5850@ second slot, which has worse cooling. and make these test all again. I let you know what happened with screenshots and make my descision about rma the board or not. at least users having the same issues like me can get an idea. thx for reading

  • GF4 Ti4200 won't overclock?

    Hey guys,
This isn't so much a problem, more of a query. I just purchased an MSI Geforce4 Ti4200 128mb DDR and overall am very happy with it. Although whenever I attempt to take the core clock speed or the memory clock speed up (either using the advanced display properties or the MSI 3D! Turbo Experience) and reboot, the changes have never taken effect. They seem to just default back to the most stable settings (464/250). I know this card can go to 'at least' 510/270 but no matter wot I do it won't let me :-(
Anyway hope someone can help me out. There's no hurry mind, the default settings are running everything fine atm :-)
    Cheers ppl

  • Msi 970a-g45 won't enter setup

I just put together a brand new system. Components are as follows:
    MSI 970A-G45 mobo
    AMD FX 4100 3.6Ghz
    GeForce GTX 550-Ti video card
    (2) 2GB DDR3 1600 memory
When I first put this system together, I set my 3 hard drives as a raid 5 and then proceeded to install windows. First it told me I needed a dvdrom driver which I thought was funny because that's what the windows disk was running in. I restarted several times and I got a boot failure and when I restarted it again one of my harddrives disappeared. After unplugging and replugging several times I finally got them all to show up again but then it wouldn't let me back into bios. It froze several times at the entering setup screen. I tried resetting cmos and no results. I pulled the memory down to one stick and got into bios again but it hasn't reset anything other than the date. Windows 7 boot disk still won't run and I don't know what else to do with it. I have used this disk to recently set up 4 other computers and have eventually gotten all the other bugs worked out. What else can I do to insure that this will work?

Use as few components as possible when installing Windows: No doubles or extras or other unnecessary things. Add the unnecessary things afterwards.

So my bad...there is an Intel Turbo Mode setting under the OC tab.  It was enabled and I tried to disable it.  No change...
So then I started turning off C1E and C-State stuff.  That only made it worse.  According to CPU-Z the CPU was getting full voltage all the time.  At least with C1E/C-States enabled the voltages will back off with no load on the CPU.
The Win 8 Task Manager is very strange.  It is showing the frequency bouncing around 3.3-4.2 while CPU-Z shows it hard locked at 4.2  I am not sure what the Task Manager is using for its calculations.  But even the Task Manager hard locked at 4.2 with everything disabled.
I have the same board (P67A-G45) and I am having the same problem.  When I set the multiplier in the BIOS, the CPU will bounce between 3.3GHz and whatever I set the multiplier to.  I am running the V1.18 BIOS.  With Windows 7, I could set the multiplier to whatever I wanted, enable C-States, and the CPU would throttle down to 16x without any issue or any interaction from me.
You can use ThrottleStop to check the multiplier more accurately then CPU-Z.  Also in ThrottleStop, you can click "Set Multiplier" -> "Power Saver" -> "Turn On" and the CPU will run like a champ at 16x multiplier, so its definitely possible.  This 16x get reported in CPU-Z and in the Windows Task Manager as well.  Once you disable Power Saver, its back to 33x + multiplier land.
I hope a solution to this will be found, seems really silly to install a new OS and have CPU multiplier issues...

  • Z87-g45 won't detect video card

I just got a 87-g45 and the on board graphics work fine with my dvi cable.  I put in my gtx 660 but it won't detect it at all.  I tried putting it in another computer and the card works fine.  I saw another thread with a similar problem: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=174991.0
I just flashed the bios to the one linked in the thread, but it didn't help.  Should I plan to get a new motherboard or is there another way to solve this?

    1.  The computer runs fine through the onboard video, I'm using it right now to type this.  Is it possible that the computer runs fine even with a bent pin?  Is it easy to tell if I have a bent pin?
yes it may run fine if a pin that connects to the PCI-E connector is bent! you need to remove the cooler and CPU and look in the underlying socket with a Bright light and a magnifier to see if they are all strait and in line! with each other from a few angles like from above and then at a 45 degree angle to make sure they all look exactly the same!
Quote from: XrBob on 29-December-13, 14:23:50
    3. Does that mean having the motherboard just hanging outside the case?
put the board on a piece of plain cardboard or wood (to prevent shorting) on a table and plug up the power and so on and see if it posts there (most builders do that before they put it in a case or place it on the motherboard box itself)!

  • MSI z77a-G45 Gaming 3770k overclocking?

I just recently purchased the z77a-G45 Gaming mobo and a i7 3770k, most of my googling would leave me to believe that the 3770k can easily obtain 4.6Ghz with fairly low voltages like 1.16-1.20 vcore; here comes the question...in order for me to obtain some level of stability @ 4.6Ghz I must crank my vcore to 1.4150 with 100% cpu offset resulting in a 1.39 vcore in windows with a 1.38 vcore under load.  I have all power saving technologies disabled, pll overvoltage enabled, cpu vdroop offset set to 100%; my question is am I missing something with MSI boards as this is the first one I've ever owned or did I just get a very power hungry 3770k?
    General system specs
    MSI z77a-G45 Gaming MOBO
    i7 3770k CPU
    16Gb of Gskill Trident X 2400mhz memory
    Corsair HX850 Gold PSU
    MSI GTX 670 PE OC
    Cooled by custom water loop

Alrighty, appreciate the info; gonna back down to 4.4Ghz as I can maintain stability with 1.275 vcore in bios = 1.26 in windows = 1.24 under load resulting in hottest core never exceeding 70...was really hoping for 4.7-5.0Ghz overclock when most everyone who reviewed this chip in the early days was claiming such great overclocks with such low voltage.  But I'll chalk that up to either misinformation or non stability checked overclocks, I guess I'm old school; cause if it can't hold up to a minimum 24hr pass of Prime 95 small fft's it isn't stable in my book.  Might consider delidding it in a year or so once the new wears off, I had my i7 920 for about that long before I lapped it into a mirror shine lol.  So based on my new information 3770k's on average overclock between 4.4-4.6Ghz and can require up to 1.4 vcore and higher past 4.6Ghz which is where you start to really become thermally limited on liquid as the Ivy Bridge's 22nm technology puts the cores to closely together in combination with intel's cheap ass thermal compound solution. Maximum recommended voltage for 24/7 shouldn't exceed 1.4 vcore without some kick ass cooling or a combination of delidded processor and kick ass cooling cause ideally you want your cores mid 70's and below...that about sum it all up?

  • P67S-C43: Won't POST with two sticks of RAM

Hi, my new P67S-C43 has a peculiar problem: It won't POST with two sticks of RAM. I've tried both of my sticks (2 x 2GB G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3-1600 CL9 1.5V) individually in Slot 1 and the system POSTs fine. When I insert the second stick in any other slot, the system proceeds to restart unsuccessully a couple of times and then it will not POST. Only one blue LED is illuminated. When the system is in this state I have to reset the CMOS in order to POST successfully with a single stick of RAM again, which made the problem difficult to diagnose and very annoying to troubleshoot (lose BIOS settings after every attempt with the clear).
Any idea of when we'll see a new BIOS? Are any betas available? I'd like to see if this is a BIOS problem before RMAing it.
    Thanks.

Which BIOS do you now have? Current official is V1.5. It would possibly help to have a full listing of all the systems components. Work with the one RAM stick initially in the primary dimm slot, blue closest to CPU. Get the OS loaded, drivers, etc., then add the second stick in the other blue dimm slot later. I have a feeling the RAM is setting itself up wrong. Might try the manual settings of 1333 9 9 9 24 @ 1.50V's.
The BIOS was 1.5 out of the box but it's my understanding from another thread that there have been a slew of beta BIOSs released. I'm not going to load the OS until I get this straightened out. Also, both sticks would have the same settings with one stick or two installed. I fiddled with voltage, timings, etc but it still wouldn't work when I popped in the second stick. LIke I said, after every attempt with two sticks I have to clear CMOS or it won't work again with one stick. I'm hoping to try a newer BIOS before spending more hours on this, one setting at a time.
Also, I have a 2600K but the rest of the components are irrelevant. At one point I had everything but the CPU/fan, video card, and RAM unplugged and the mobo entirely out of the case. Still didn't work until there was only one stick.

  • P67A-G45 Windows 8 Overclock Speedstep Issues

I just upgraded my setup from Windows 7 to 8.  I have my i5-2500K overclocked to 4.2GHz.  In Win 7 I could see Speedstep/EIST working fine and it would throttle down to 1.6GHz when things were not busy.
Now with Win 8 it stays at 4.2 no matter what.  The multiplier never seems to drop down.  If I set it back to the normal 33 things are fine.  If I start it at 33 and then use MSI Control Center to raise the multi it works fine.  But if I boot it with the CPU already at 42 it just stays at max speed.
I am at all the latest BIOS and software versions.
    Any ideas???

The system will power on and get to the BIOS screen. I can enter the BIOS and everything looks fine: all my drives are detected, the RAM is present, the CPU looks correct. However, when I go to actually load an operating system, it never loads. After the BIOS screen I just get a blank screen with a white blinking cursor in the upper-left corner, and this never goes away (I've tried leaving it for 10 minutes or more).
Originally I was trying to boot from the mentioned SSD which has both Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows 7 64-bit partitions installed with GRUB2 to load them. This didn't load, so I tried an Ubuntu 11.04 live CD in my DVD-ROM drive. That didn't work, so I tried the same CD in an external USB CD-ROM drive in case it was a problem with the SATA controller/connectors. Still the same behavior. So I tried a memtest86+ CD in both drives. Still the same behavior. For each of the tests after the first I explicitly opened the boot menu with F11 at the BIOS screen and selected the device I wanted to try.
At this point I've already tried exchanging the memory I had originally bought with the memory I listed above, since the old memory I realized after I bought it was labelled as "Intel i5/i7 compatible" and the new memory is on the MSI support list for this motherboard model. Any thoughts on where to go next? My next thought was to RMA the motherboard but I feel like I'm flying blind here. I've never see a new build get stuck at this point in the boot process.

OK posting from Ubuntu on my now-working build!!
So, after two weeks of messing around with the CPU, RAM, video card, etc., I finally have the thought that the one thing I haven't tried yet is the old SATA expansion PCI card that I put in early on at the bottom of the motherboard underneath the video card (out of direct sight, out of mind apparently), for when I try to connect all 7 of my SATA devices. I tried pulling that out - presto, it boots. Retried a couple of times for proof, keeps booting correctly. It can even load memtest86+ off a CD. Put the PCI card back in - still boots. Reconnected the sata drive - no boot. Remembered that this particular PCI card has two SATA ports and one is for RAID of some kind, tried the other port - now it boots. The drive connected to the card is also detected by the OS.
In conclusion, it was something entirely different from what I was working on, as it usually is.
I'm going to get to work connecting everything back up, getting the new video card working, etc. I suspect I'll be back at least to read when I try to get my memory working at 1866 (different forum I know). Thanks to those who responded for the pointers.

DVD:  LG USB 2.0 external  DVD/CD R-W combo drive
    OS:  Win 7 Pro SP1 32bit
    PSU:  300W
    The short summary is:
New system build.   Powers up just fine.
Windows install runs to completion, but upon initial boot, gets to windows startup page indicating "Setup is updating Registry Settings"..  then poof.. reboot.
    Testing:
Verified RAM is good (via memory test from BIOS, windows installer and another computer RAM swap).
SSD drive appears to be fine.
    identified in BIOS
windows setup can partition/format and REpartition/REformat without error
same diff with a single Seagate Barracuda drive in system
IDE or AHIC settings make no diff
    Reset CMOS
Tried both DVI and VGA video channels..  same diff.
The only thing I haven't done is the BIOS upgrade.
Mobo came with v17.0..  v17.2 is available  n' looks like it'll get updates for CPU and Memory.
It just seems like everything is pretty current n' shouldn't need to do.
Smacks of a driver problem to me.  Maybe for the on board video controller.
Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Smacks of a driver problem to me.  Maybe for the on board video controller. It's gotta be a driver or problems with the on board graphics.  As long as you're OK with DOS, it's a breeze. I'll give MSI support a chance to resolve this.. then I RMA this evil beast.
Test with only a RAM stick in the blue primary dimm slot. I would suspect a 300W PSU as possibly not providing enough system power. If you have a 'spinner' HDD to test with, I would recommend to try with one of those too. In the future, use the forum's USB Flashing Tool. Safest flashing method on the planet.
