P67A-G65 (b3) - Hard Lock Problem

I recently built a new machine (specs at the bottom of the post), and am experiencing random hard locks that I can't figure out. The locks generally happen 30-60min after booting up the computer, and seem to happen more often when idle than when in use, but I can't confirm that. I have tried turning off XMS and other overclocking on my memory, as well as doing a new install of Windows, but it still seems to be happening. I have updated all my drivers, and my BIOS is v1.8, so it's up to date with the current stable release version. I still need to try individually testing my memory sticks, but if anyone has any other suggestions that might help, they would be very appreciated.

I'm not picking on these specific posts but there is something that needs to be said about the tendency to look for problems in the motherboard or other components when things go wrong.  It's really important to understand that a lockup, random reboot, BSOD, etc. is simply what happens when any of a thousand things go wrong with a computer build.  It's similar to a car that won't start - it could be a failed electrical system, mechanical system or it could just be out of gas.  Because of this, it doesn't help to search for a common thread, you need to look at each problem individually to understand the root cause.
It's also important to understand why computers from Dell, HP or any other manufacturer doesn't have the same problems you see when you purchase your own parts to build a system.  These companies have research groups who are constantly working with different motherboards, RAM, video cards and other components to determine which ones are most reliable and more importantly, which ones work best together.  When developing a new model, these people carefully select from the parts they have tested to design the new model including all the different video card options, drive options, RAM, etc.  In addition, these systems are always configured to the safest specifications with no overclocking or anything else that could potentially cause a flood of support calls. Then each of these systems are built and tested using a long burn-in period with multiple copies of each system to make sure any potential issues are found and fixed.  All of this is done before a new computer is sold to the public by one of these companies.
When you build your own system, you must perform these tasks yourself or your chances of success are very low.  You can't just buy components based on what is popular or appears to be the best in class.  You must carefully crosscheck every component to make sure they will (probably) work together.  Finally, you need a systematic approach for assembling and testing your system one step at a time so if a problem occurs you will know what has probably caused it.  
Just like the companies that sell full computer systems, all reputable computer component companies are also experts at designing and testing the parts they sell.  They know that anytime a component has a problem there is lots of negative publicity, recalls and other consequences they all want to avoid (e.g. the recent Intel problems).  So when you have built a computer that is randomly failing in some way, don't start by looking for problems with the parts you bought.  This will only distract you from finding the real cause because 99.99% of all problems with new computer builds are caused by assembly errors or misconfiguration.  
There are lots of people on this forum and others willing to help with build problems but you need to start with the assumption that something is wrong with your assembly or configuration and follow the posting guide.  A simple step-by-step troubleshooting approach will save a lot of time in the long run.

  • Mplayer/Vlc hard lock ups

    Hello forum,
    i have been using Archlinux for some months now and so far the only issue is that Mplayer/Vlc seems very unstable. For some time i didn't have any problems but I guess that after upgrading glibc or glib that I experience hard lock ups in the kernel (flashing lights on the keyboard). Only happens when watching movies in mplayer/vlc. No error logs indicating what the problem could be. Anyone experiencing the same?
    Running Arch64 (duh...) on a dual opteron 250, xfce4/e17, quadro-fx 1100

    Well i figured it was due to glibc, it happened before and i was already building/trying a new distro. Luckily the arch linux guys posted a message about the mplayer/flash/firefox/zlib/glibc bug. After the updates it worked again but then there was yet another release of glibc and it broke things again...Guess i should be more carefull with updating.
    If i experience more crashes i'll try recompiling zlib, ffmpeg, vlc and mplayer (in that order).

  • Laptop hard locking

    I've just installed Archlinux on a brand new Dell Latitude E6520
    This laptop has a nvidia quadro nvs 4200m and an intel card. I've disabled optimus in the bios and I'm using the nvidia binary drivers.
    I've had a couple of hard locks, no response at all, I cannot switch to tty1 or anything else. This mostly happens after I've been seeing a flash movie.
    EDIT: some more information. This is in Gnome Shell with Chromium. The problem seems to always occur on closing a tab with a youtube video in it.
    It also seem like it's just the screen that locks (the mouse can be moved) and I could see a torrent updating on my android phone (transdroid - transmission)
    Does anyone have an idea what could be wrong?

    I've the same notebook. I've not had any hardlocks so far, but I've not seen so much flash movies yet. Anyway, I just tried closing running youtube-video tab on Kde4 + enabled desktop effects -> Everything's fine.

    Issued solved:
    - in order to make nvidia graphics working you have to disable Optimius in BIOS.
    - Battery not recognized -- fixed after recend updates
    - grub2 does not work. As soon as grub2 loads, the laptop reboots. -> stick to grub1  --  works now (either I did sth wrong the first time or a new version of grub2 fixes this issue)
    - in order to make the touchpad work properly install psmouse-elantech from AUR
       update: this is only a half-solution. vertical scrolling on the right edge works but graphical tools which rely on x11-input-synpatics still don't work. However, everything works fine with kernel 3.3. Once this in the main arch repos you won't need psmouse-elantech anymore.

  • Console does not display when X exits (Formerly X hard locks on exit)

    Interesting problem, I think:
    Going from the X server to the console, I only get a black screen, and my monitor seems to think nothing is there - it seems like X won't give up control of the screen. Now, I've narrowed this down to a problem with the open source radeon drivers, as the vesa driver gives me no problem.
    I've tried the following to no effect:
    - Turning compositing on and off
    - Using no xorg.conf, as well as auto creating one with X -configure
    - Raising Elephants, which does work, though I still can't get back to any of the consoles after Alt+Sysrq+R
    - Swapping ati for radeon in xorg.conf, and vice versa
    - Using different DEs (xfce and fluxbox)
    - Analyzing Xorg.0.log right before  (cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log > xLog && xfce4-session-logout) , and after logout -- diff shows no difference. I'm puzzled by this, actually. Obviously, the X server does not state that it has exited, being that it doesn't, but it's not throwing an error, either.
    - Checking the forums for anyone else having this problem
    There was a similar bug over in ubuntu, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/129910, but tty1-6 are all working at boot, which I don't think was the case in that bug.

    This command works:
    xfce4-session-logout && cat /var/log/messages > message1 && shutdown -h now
    So it's not a hard lock, so much as the console can't regain control of the screen.

  • Mounting USB Hard Drives and Hard Locking

    So, it's been a long time since I've posted here which I have to say, is because Arch was running beautifully for a long time. Sadly though, my laptop was stolen and I was forced to buy a new one. With the new one, I've gotten everything mostly back up and running but I'm having an issue. Obviously the one in the subject line.
    A few things to note about this install and after testing before posting.
    1. Brand new install
    2. All packages are current EXCEPT 3.  I currently have nvidia-256.53-1-x86_64, nvidia-utils with the same version, and kernel26-2.6.35.5-1. These are due to a black screen I was getting on starting my xserver.
    3. HAL is running
    4. Optical disks mount and umount cleanly.
    5. NTFS-3G is installed and working.
    6. My Windows 7 install on the same internal hard drive can be accessed and mounted without a hard lock.
    My problem is this. Whenever I try and connect an external hard drive via USB, it takes a few seconds and then the whole machine hard locks with what looks like a kernel panic(can't do anything and I have blinking lights...ie capslock, etc).  This computer seems to have USB 3.0 which I noticed from Win7 awhile back if that makes a difference. (05:00.0 USB Controller: NEC Corporation Device 0194 (rev 03) )
    Last time I try to mount my WD Passport, I ran dmesg right after I plugged it in before I got my hard lock. The only thing I noticed were the entries at the bottom of things like this...

    Kernel messages show pretty much the same thing. These logs were from just a moment ago when I plugged it in and then removed it. Sometimes it seems to hard lock, others it doesn't. Got me.

  • Latest PowerStrip hard-locks

    Is anyone experiencing this?
    For me it hard-locks the machine every time I try to start it. If I uninstall, clean the PowerStrip directory and re-install, it shows the HW it detected, but when you say OK, it hard-locks the machine. (Reset being the only thing that works). I found an old version of PS that works fine with my setup, but was wondering if anyone is having this porblem too.
    I have an nForce 420 board, 256MB ram (2 sticks, 1,2), BIOS 2.3.
    I'm running WinME, Video drivers: 30.84
    It also happened on all the 28.xx and 29.xx drivers.

  • Hard-locking after killing X

    I am new to the archlinux distro but not to linux. I must say I am impressed by arch's excellent integration of various software components despite the transparency of the system. Years back I felt it was nessisary to have a thick automation layer keeping the configuration inline. Thankfully this belief is being proven wrong!
    Anyhow, I have experienced one frustrating problem: dreaded hard-locking. To reproduce a hard-lock I have only to kill X with CTRL-ALT-BKSPC, switch to a VT0-6, then try to switch back to VT7. After that I have no control over my system: I cannot switch VTs; num-lock does not toggle the num-lock indicator; and even the sacred ALT-SYSREQ-B does nothing. I have also experienced intermittant hard-locks when plugging in a particular flash drive.
    My configuration is as follows:
    SLIM display manager started by the uncommented line in /etc/inittab
    openbox window manager
    no desktop environment
    HP Compaq nw8440 notebook
    hardware is stock except for upgraded hdd
    video: ATI FireGL X1600 using radeonhd driver from repo
    Any help overcomming this frustrating issue would be greatly appreciated. If there is any additional information I could provide that would help in diagnosing this problem, please let me know what that would be!

    I tried this, and always happens when close X normaly, then switch to VT7 and, now can't switch to another terminal.
    The solution is set the kerboard in raw mode with SYSRQ+R and keyboard respond again .
    You need to eneble sysrq in /etc/sysctl.conf
    Maybe a X error, not hardware dependent, my system is and AMD X2 5200+ with a nvidia 7300GT.

  • JRE and IE process gets hard lock

    How the application works :
    I have an application which is divided into two iframes. Iframe with a left pane loads an applet having a treeview like structure and each node is having a link associated with it. On the otherhand iframe with a right pane can loads html page with applet within.
    Whenever each link (Tree node) of Tree view is right clicked a context menu will appeared, which have text like "open", "properties" etc. This context menu is developed in java applet.
    Now the problem is :
    Whenever a page containing an applet in right pane is refreshed, while a Java-based context menu is displayed (within the TreeView). Once the page refreshes, it hard locks the JRE and the IE process. Only way to recover is to blow away the IE process (which will kill the Java.exe process)
    Can someone suggest what is missing with menu applet?

    If you don't allow enough memory for the Java plugin to work, then that seems to be your problem.no, the problem is that sun java does not integrate properly with WINDOWS explorer, it doesn't recognise it as Internet explorer. It only works when IE is loaded as a standalone task, not as part of Windows Explorer

  • Complete and unexpected hard-lock on authentication

    Hello. I've recently experienced my first hard-lock on my MacBook Pro. I'm running 10.6.8, and I can't seem to figure out what cuased it. It's making me very worried for the health and stability of my system.
    What happened was this: I use password protection on my screen saver, and I do not put my laptop into sleep mode. Instead I use a hotcorner to activate the screen saver when I walk away from the machine, and then reauthenticate when I come back. After about ~30 min away from the keys, I came back and tried to authenticate, only to find that the password input window was not accepting keyboard input. Eventually I realized that the system had hard locked for a reason I couldn't understand. I had to force the machine to power down, and then boot it back up. The reboot was slower than I'd expect (though maybe that was just my nerves and imagination). In the hour or so since then, it's not repeated itself, even when trying to replicate the circumstances of the lockup.
    The console messages didn't help much, but perhaps someone else can make more sense of them than I can. From what I can gather, a backup started, and then the ethernet port went down. My VPN client (which wasn't running or connected) then tried to switch interfaces to see if other internet connections were available - despite my not being connected to the VPN or running the client.
    Here's the relevent time stamped log entries between the first notice of hard-locking and rebooting. I've redacted computer, drive, and host names, as well as mac addresses and IP addresses. I'm not sure what to make of it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm not sure if this was a fluke, or a harbringer of something more sinister.

    I have been experiencing a lot of hard locks and kernel crashes/oops(es?) lately. This computer has always had random freezes in both WinXP and Linux (various distributions -- including live cds).

    I added nosmp and the other parameters at the install/rescue cd's suggestion. I tried using the microcode package (I have a P4 HT) as suggested by someone in another thread.
    I've found that the freezes will happen at the beginning of heavy CPU or disk usage (such as compilation or pacman db parsing). The hd is not the original one from this system (it was a hand-me-down), so I don't think that's the problem. The video card is different and the RAM is new. The only components that are still around are:
    P4 HT processor (2.60 ghz)
    Albatron  PX865PE II
    Enermax power supply
    Any ideas? It also says "bad eip value" when the system has kernel crashes (especially on boot).

  • System freezes due to hard disk problems only on Linux (not windows)

    Intro/context:
    Recently i've bought (about 2 months) a new laptop, a Lenovo G50-70, which came with Windows 8.1. As i had no interest on that OS, i formatted the disk and installed only Arch Linux. During that time i experienced system freezes which i had no idea why they were happening. As time went by, i found disk errors on system logs related to hard drive. I searched those errors and almost everything i found was that my hard drive had problems, so i decided to use my warranty. But first, i installed the original OS back again. And after using it a couple of weeks, i didn't experiencie any problem with my hard drive (on Linux it was really frequent). Now i've installed Arch Linux back, along with original Windows 8.1, having dual boot. There is no disk problem when using Windows, but when on Arch, i have the same errors and problems i used to have. So i assume it may be related to kernel or some confniguration issue.
    I also haven't noticed any relation between system freezes and system use. I mean, it can happen either under light or heavy use.
    tl dr: system freezes randomly for some minutes when using linux due to hard drive problems. The problem doesn't happen on windows.
    What i've done so far:
    The first period i was on Arch, i run smart (long and short), fsck, and hdparm tests. And nothing (no errors). Searched for bad blocks, and nothing. When back on windows, i also run tests on hdd and found no problems, except some sector reallocation not-that-nice indicators. These problems occured at the end of the first arch installation period. But still i currently experience no problem on windows.
    I've also tried setting libata: noncq, 3.0G, noacpi, noapic kernel parameters, and had no result.
    Changed BIOS setting from AHCI to Legacy, and no result. Also updated BIOS and no result.
    I found no firmware update for this hard drive.
    So i don't know what other thing i can try. I want to emphasize that there is no problem, no freezing, when running Windows, so i don't think it's a hard drive issue.

    Something i'd noticed both the first time i was on arch and now i've reinstalled it, was that at first i didn't have this problem. I mean, when Arch was just installed. While i was installing and setting up everything.
    Now, i'm not 100% sure about this, but i think problems began when using my current user. Disk is partitioned the following way:

    Because of this, i booted into systemd rescue mode, like root, rw, and unmounted /home partition. Despite root-only limitations, i used the system for a couple of hours, started lxqt, browsed the web mainly, and experienced no problem at all.
    Now i booted normally, with my regular user, and these problems are experienced just like before (and almost instantly, like 3 or 5 minutes after starting system use).
    dmesg this time showed a some different log, though it's not the first time i see this. I just didn't saved that kind of log before.

    There are some sda8 (home) related messages. I also found these messages first time Arch was installed (i think also related to home partition).
    root and home partitions are both ext4.

  • Hard drive problem...... Please Help

    I am sure it is due to my error or mistake but I received a new Maxtor III touch as a replacement for my failed drive yesterday after connecting it I went to Maxtor one touch manager software that came with it and the drive did not appear in the window so then I opened disk utilities and copied my notebook hard drive over to the Maxtor ran permissions on each drive and then closed down my system ! today when I opened my Powerbook with the Maxtor on it gave me the grey screen 2x so I disconnected the Maxtor ran permissions again and everything was fine until i power up the Maxtor and Grey screen again! Help How do I fix this?????

    Well, yes, data does get corrupted sometimes.
    The trick is finding what data.
    By 'cleaned' are you therefor meaning that the drive has been erased and the system re-installed?
    Because that's the quickest way to deal with such a situation.
    Back up the system first of course,
    Add back 3rd party apps one at a time in case one of them is causing the problem.

    Did you go into iTunes to change the location of your media files? if not you will need to go into iTunes and click on preference and select the advance tab then click the iTunes Media folder location.  Select the location of your on external hard drive.
