P67A-GD53 RAID Question

Hi All
Very quick question re RAID set-up on a P67A-GD53. Sorry if this analogy is lost on everyone, but do these boards handle arrays like, say, a Dell PERC card does? Essentially, is the array handled entirely by the hardware and transparent to any Operating System/Hypervisor that may be installed on the volumes presented to it by the controller.
I'm sure the answer, whatever it may be, is common to all MSI boards with RAID controllers and possibly to all consumer boards-I've just never had any experience of them!
Many thanks
Rob

Onboard RAIDs are mainly software controlled unlike hardware RAIDs by add-on cards.

  • P67A-GD53 question

I setup a new PC with the following parts
    Motherboard: P67A-GD53
    CPU: i5 2500k
    GPU: 470 GTX
    OS: Windows 7 64 Bit
Now if I plug in my 470 GTX in slot E2 windows will freeze shortly after the windows screen, if I plug it into slot E5 it boots up fine.  According to the docs slot E5 is x8 where slot E2 is x16.
Does anyone know what would cause this issue?
    Adam

I did some more tests on this, installed a new version of Windows and installed one driver at a time until the hang happens.  Its definitely the graphics card and it only hangs when its in slot E2.  The card is powered correctly and seems to perform really well in slot E5, but it really confuses me why that would even cause an issue.  Maybe theres a BIOS setting i'm missing somewhere.
It also makes me wonder if theres an actual problem with my motherboard or the GPU.

  • P67A-GD53 - B3 a few questions regarding a 2500K

Just came from a P45 Platinum and Q9550 (which I love and it's now in my secondary PC) to a P67A-GD53 - B3 and 2500K. Wow these chips fly!
I've updated to the latest bios (1.19, should put those Ivy Bridge bios 4.xx files in a separate section, confusing as I nearly updated to one by accident) which has solved a number of issues (mouse not working in BIOS, better fan control.) Great!
However, have a few more niggling problems.
    1) I had to place 2x8GB sticks in dimm 2 and 4 due to my heatsink. In the manual it says populate dimm 1 and 3 first for dual channel.
Common sense tells me dimm 2 and 4 should still work fine, however nowhere in the bios does it tell me I'm running in dual channel mode. I tried disabling the boot pic, but the darn thing boots so fast I can't for the life of me read what it says on post - even pause/break won't register it's so fast. Sooo...
Does anyone know how to check if it's running in dual channel mode? CPU-Z says dual, but doesn't mention symmetrical / asymmetrical etc, the box is greyed out. Or is there no such thing as symmetrical / asymmetrical on a 2500K?
    2) The bios does one long beep followed by two short beeps on post. I have only a USB mouse attached. P45 used to beep for USB devices, but this is different. It works 100% fine, but what's with the annoying beeps on post? Do I have to unplug the case speaker to avoid that racket each boot? No options to turn off in bios. Also why is it doing it? Makes it seem like something is wrong on post, but can't identify any issues.
    3) P45 Platinum used to still downclock voltage when you manually set it - it would simply add a + or - offset to all speedstep default voltages depending on what you manually selected.  The P67A-GD53 - B3 doesn't have this option - is this for Z68 boards only, or am I limited to sticking with AUTO only. AUTO actually seems to set it really well for turbo 4.2Ghz settings using around 1.30v (which the board seems optimised for a standard 2500K overclock), however it's strange this option was taken away when other P67 boards seem to have it.
    4) Active Phase Switching (APS) vs Intel CPU Power Phase control. Why have both? I'd imagine APS is now redundant now Intel have phase control logic as part of their specification.
    5) C1E is disabled by default. This is a bios controlled improved HALT status, switching off clocks and voltages. Did some checks and it seems 99% of power savings come from Windows controlled C-States and EIST (speedstep) on the 2500K and C1E actually isn't really needed anymore - in fact it can cause issues with SSD performance, latency and can prevent Windows having complete control of C-States in power management. Decided to leave this disabled as saw some power meter tests and it really did nothing vs other modern C-States once Windows boots up.

1.) With the pxx series 1 & 3 or 2&4 are both fine.
2.) The first beep is probably ok "ok" post beep , then mouse and keyboard.
3.) You should be able to get around a 4.5 ghz turbo oc with your set-up. See screen shots here of sample settings: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=162043.0
The vdroop options are your platform aren't very good and I believe are opposite. So set your to "low". (Test each way I don't have that board)
4.) I enabled both and was stable on a previous computer.
5.) C1E supports has been replace by Intel C State.

I know for sure you will have more questions when you get the Z77 but one thing is when you do get it is don't assemble it in the case right away. Do initial assembly outside the case with MB on a sheet of plain brown cardboard or on a cardboard box. That will save you time and extra work until you get it running properly.
One hint now is for initial start up use only 1 stick of RAM in the black slot nearest the CPU, do not put all of the sticks in right away. Also take note that the green LAN LED will probably not light up on the first start up, that's normal and will be OK after it is started a 2nd time. That will happen every time you remove power from the MB such as unplugging PSU or turning off the PSU switch. We'll be here waiting for you to answer any more questions you may have.
    Thanks for the information!
It will arrive tomorrow, I will tell you how is it going.

  • P67A-GD53\GD65 BIOS compatibility

Hi, the question is: do P67A-GD53\GD65 boards use the same bios, so it is safe to flash, for example gd65 bios to gd53 board?
    Thanx in advance.

Any specific reason you want to flash at all?
BIOS is NOT a driver, if the system is fine it should be left alone.

  • MSI P67A-GD53 - Win 7 x64 PC Cannot Restart when OC Genie turned on

    Hi,
My PC will not reboot from Windows when OC Genie is active on my recently built PC.
The PC will power down, but does not restart again. I have to hold down the power switch to turn of the machine completely and then turn the PC back on manually.
When OC Genie is off, the issue is not present, the PC can restart from Windows as normal.
I'd like to be able to use OC Genie, but this issue makes it too much of a pain. I've read in to ACPI a bit, but it's not obvious to me how OC Genie might interfere with this.
Can I resolve this issue somehow?

  • PCI-E slot possibly not working (P67A-GD53)

    Hello all,
New guy here. New MSI customer and everything.
I just built a new PC today with a MSI P67A-GD53. I first plugged in the VGA (a MSI GeForce GTX 560Ti OC Twin FrozR II) to the top PCI-E slot.
On boot, I get what I think is a VGA problem beep code (1 long - 3 short beeps). This happened with 2 different VGAs. I also tried my old XFX 8800 GT.
The computer boots fine when I plug in the MSI VGA to the second (bottom) PCI-E slot.
Does this mean that the top slot is broken? I guess I could try the 8800 at the same time to see if it works when 2 VGAs are plugged in, but I suspect it wont. Should I get the motherboard replaced? I am considering not getting it replaced now since I ordered it from the UK and I live in Cyprus and replacement could take a month to complete (posting overseas). Would that be a bad idea? I fear that if one part of the motherboard is faulty, it could potentially have other problems as well.

are you sure you got the stand offs right under the board
I might have missed a hole, but I definitely didn't leave any old stand-offs that might short the board from underneath.
I'll recheck and add any missing and get back to you.

Ok, do you see the Realtek HD Audio correctly installed in your Device Manager?
When you plug speakers into MoBo, do you get a auto pop-up dialog from Audio Manager?
If not, you have to click yellow folder (in the upper right corner on the picture below) and to enable that dialog.
Does Realtek Audio Manager see anything connected to your board?
On my picture you can see 5 jacks faded,  but one ( green) in which I have speakers connected is in full colour.
When you right-click you mouse on that jack , it has to be dedicated to 'front speaker out'.

  • Windows will not load while a USB is plugged into P67A-GD53 (B3)

There are a couple issues here but that is the main one that I'm dealing with. I just built a new rig a few days ago and for some reason Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit will freeze at the Windows logo if I have any external devices (USB, speaker jack, etc.) plugged into it. If I unplug everything from it, Windows will start as normal, I'll just plug everything back in after the Windows logo screen and I'll experience no issues while running. I've installed all drivers that I could from the Windows device manager however, I was not able to boot from the drivers and utilities disk that came with the P67A-GD53 (B3). The CD would load to the Winki install options screen, I'd select to install and then the screen would go black. When I load the disk from the desktop the online update option sends me to a 404 page . No beeps on start up. Any ideas?

Did you do a fresh install of Windows on the HDD or is it an old install and simply transferred HDD from old system?

  • Newbie FCP HDV monitoring and RAID questions

    Hello forum gods.
First off, I must confess - I am a defector seeking assylum in the the Mac camp. I am a born-and-bred Windows person, and a longtime Avid editor who just made the jump and purchased the Mac-Pro with all the bells and whistles, and FCP Studio. I did this to accompany my JVC ProHD cam and deck.
I have no idea what I am going to do with the time I used to spend scanning for viruses and trojans. I am thinking I may write a novel, or build a house by hand - but that is another topic.
Now that the confession is out of the way - we can move on to the actual questions.
    <big breath>
Ok - so I have this new fancy shiny computer, deck, camera, and monitors - one of which is the Sony 23" that is comparable to the Apple 23. I do not have a Kona or Blackmagic card because I was told that I did not need one right away - though I do plan on getting one later. For monitoring, I was going to use the firewire in/out of the JVC deck and convert the signal via the component outs to another HD monitor. This would bring the total monitors on the system to 3 - a 19" for the edit screen, the 23" for the video playback in FCP and the braodacast HD for monitoring the final signal.
    Is this workable?
Now for the second question - storage and RAID.
Most of my footage will be either SD or HDV. Eventually I'll be going to XDCam, but that's a bit down the road. I have the internal 250 gigger that came in the Mac, and I purchased additional 500gb SATA II drives that I was going to use to set up a RAID. Should I do this internal or external? Will it work? What else do I need? What is the meaning of life?
Thanks for your replies. My credit card is anxiously awaiting your suggestions
    G5 Quad Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    G5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Some question back atcha:
    1) When you say you'll be working in SD, what do you
mean? Typically, SD refers to uncompressed 601, 720 X
    486. Or are you referring to DV NTSC?
DV NTSC and/or the myriad formats that the JVC100 can do.
    2) Your Profile says you have a Quad G5, but your
post says it's a MacPro. Which is it?
Sorry - Consider that my first public gaffe in the new Mac world. I bought the Mac Pro. Time to change my profile. I bought it last week - it isn't even here yet. Supposed to be delivered today...
    3) Are you wanting to see your HDV sequence on a
external video monitor while you're editing? If so,
you'll need the Kona card (or the Blackmagic card,
but I don't do BMD, only Aja, so I don't know about
    the Blackmagic offerings.)
I've read about the Cinema Preview function and although I know that this isn't the best idea for monitoring, wouldn't it work? On the JVC deck, it has the firewire output/input and component outs (among others) so in E-to-E mode, couldn't the deck act as my converter for monitoring on the broadcast monitor? If not - I have a line on a Kona-2 with the BOB for about $1400. Deal or no deal?
Now as for your RAID question, you can do either
internal or external. Just don't include the drive
that contains your system folder in the RAID.
I was planning on using the 250 for all my system files and the 2-500 giggers as my edit drives. Sound good?
EDIT: As for the meaning of life, go ask your father.
Gaah... He handed me "The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and told me to get to reading....
Thanks for the help. Lord knows I need it.

  • MSI P67A-GD53 (B3) - BSOD if 2 sticks of DRAM used in dual mode

    Hi there,
I have an issue with BSOD when using 2 sticks of DRAM when the machine is overclocked or the DRAM is set to 1333MHZ and above.
Initially I got the system up and running and over clocked using the OC Genie button on the mother board over clocking to 4.3GHZ which ran great but after a day or 2 I got
BSOD. Initially I thought this was due to an SSD failure so I brought another OCZ AGILITY 3 SSD and reinstalled windows 7 and again after a few days I got BSOD.
This time however I ran memtest at bootup and saw errors appearing. I tested each DRAM stick separately and they were error free after running memtest on each for a good few hours.
When I put both RAM sticks back in dual mode the errors appeared again. I turned off OC genie and ran the same testes on the RAM with the same results.
Now in the bios I noticed that the DRAM was set to run at 1333MHZ so I changed this to 1600MHZ (the speed on the label on the DRAM itself) and ran memtest once more which through up loads of errors. So then I changed it to 1066MHZ, ran memtest and bingo! no errors!
So now I have my machine running nicely unclocked with the DRAM running at 1066MHZ.
Thing is I want to be able to overclock my machine and discover what is causing this DRAM failure.
It would appear that there is no issue with the hardware as it all works at slower speeds.
What could be causing the BSOD when the machine is overclocked or when the DRAM is running at more than 1066MHZ?
    many thanks

You do that. For the P67 boards, the earmarked slots for 2 memory modules are 1 and 3.
The applied memory voltage may be a tad too low. You can up that to 1,575 manually.
The BIOS version is the latest for Sandy Bridge processors.
Insert only one memory module in the first slot closest to the CPU. Then do a full CMOS clear with power cord removed, and retest your system again with only the one module.
If the tests are good, then add the second module.

  • MSI P67A-GD53 (B3)

Sorry jack i asked you  by email and had no reply so ill ask here.
Im a new member of the MSI forum (just purchased  MSI P67A-GD53 (B3) P67 Socket 1155 ). A bit confused as im a complete novice when it comes to overclocking.
I need to ask for advice cos im in the middle of my first ever build: Haf x case, maybe i5 2500k or i7 2600k,8 gig DDR3..unsure whether to go for 2x4 gig or 4x2 gig..help! really unsure about the memory config(Dual channel MB or the full 4 slots)
Which brings me to asking .. if I just purchase DDR3-1333 and i use the genie button on this MB would i still get a stable overclock or should i opt for DDR3-1600?
I was reading up on E-Buyer about the board i purchased and 1 reviewer stated he had an i5 2500k and genied his speed to 4.2 from 3.3 just by pressing The OC genie once. Can this be achieved with DDR3 1333 ram?or should i go for 1600 DDR3 ram?
And would the motherboard automatically recognise the Ram speed or do i need to input anything in the bios?
Any Guidance would be a massive help.
    Thanks for your time

    All Help will be appreciated.

Both ram sticks worked in slot one and it would boot but I tried running a game and it froze each occasion, cud this be due to the ram being dual channel and only having one in? Or that the ram has the wrong settings.
I have returned the motherboard along with the ram to the shop i got it from for tests to see if the dimm slots had problems. Il let you guys know what they say.
Thanks for the advice, when I get it back il build it again and see if it runs fine, if not il try the things youve said.
