P67A-GD65 (B3) Ivy Bridge CPU recognition

Hi all,
I have had this mobo for about a year, and yet I havn't used it, but just recently, I purchased an Ivy Bridge 22nm processor to which to 'try-out' the mobo not knowing the BIOS version. [oops!]
Installing this particular processor, and connecting everything else to the mobo, will it POST despìte the fact that I am unaware of the BIOS version? - Will I able to 'get-into' the BIOS at least? - Any damage to the CPU and/or mobo if turned on and if BIOS version is not the appropiate one?
The thing is, I cannot test the board as I don't have a Sandy bridge CPU at this moment.
In await of any reply,
Thanks.

No POST or entering UEFI/BIOS without a supported CPU, sorry. There is almost no advantage to an Ivy CPU in a P67. Yeah, you get prettier BIOS screens, but how much time is spent in there? Recommend to put a Sandy 2700k in it and it will destroy what an Ivy can do performance wise.
I'm running a 2500K in this same motherboard. I had the intention to grab a E3-1290V2 from work when we reconfigure & update the systems there. But it seams your advising against that?

P67A-C45 B3 SUPPORT Ivy Bridge CPU

I tried to flash the 5.1 bios via the DOS method but it killed the board. It looked as if it had gone well. It rebooted and flashed the secondary flash and all. But when it came to the final reboot the board was totally dead. The CPU and PSU fans just moved a bit and nothing happened. I tried resetting CMOS by holding the switch to empty the caps, removing battery for 10 minutes and pushing the CMOS button at the back. I even shorted the reset jumper on the board.
I tried the control + home start with both amiboot.rom on USB stick and then burnt to a cd.
I pulled out the board and stripped it trying to see if I could get a beep or blink from the diodes while putting CPU and memory back on. Nothing.
I then bought a new Z77A-S01 IvyBridge board and now I´m happy again.
There´s a bit more in this thread https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=159446.0
I probably did something wrong OR the board was faulty but I just didn´t feel like fighting with it anymore. It’s a bit over a year since I got it and perhaps I could have gotten the shop to fix it but by now I am so tired of the problems (boot errors) with this board that it feels like a relief to put it in the garbage.

  • Buying Z77MA-G45 with an Ivy Bridge CPU

    Hi
I would like to buy Z77MA-G45 with Ivy Bridge CPU. It isn't supported by default BIOS (1.1), and I don't really have any possibility to upgrade BIOS with a supported CPU (yes, I've read the topic).
    So now questions:
    - is Z77MA-G45 runnable with Ivy Bridge just to get to BIOS and update from an USB drive on in a similar way?
    - is there any marking on mobos' box that could indicate the BIOS loaded (the BIOS version itself, lot number, serial number, something similar?)
    TIA

    Hello TIA,
The board will handle all Ivy Bridge CPUs without any issues regardless the BIOS version shown on the CPU support list.
However, it is highly recommended that you perform BIOS update to the latest version once the system is up and running for best result.
    Sincerely,
    Warner

  • /dev/random on Ivy Bridge CPU

    Hello,
I have a Sandy Bridge instead of an Ivy Bridge CPU. Ivy Bridge has a new instruction for true random number generation at 500 Mbit/s.
If I type cat /dev/random, it only shows a few lines of random characters, increasing a bit if I move the mouse.
I'm curious, if you own an Ivy Bridge CPU, does /dev/random make use of it and spit out lots of random data very fast?
So please do an experiment for me, if you are using Linux on an Ivy Bridge CPU: Please let me know how much output "cat /dev/random" gives for you
    (Note: NOT /dev/urandom!!).
In other words I'm just curious if Linux makes use of that potential, or if it only uses mouse movement and networking and stuff.
    Thanks.

When I use rng-tools, and rngd.service is running, /dev/random is crazy.  But like you I get about five random lines if it is not running.
    Edit: BTW, I don't have a /dev/hw_random or a /dev/hwrandom.

  • Upgrade HP p7-1110 to Ivy Bridge CPU (Pentium G2030)

    Hello, everyone.
Would someone please tell me if I can replace the CPU of HP P7-1110 with an ivy-bridge Pentium G2030?
The motherboard is known as IPISB-CU (Carmel2).

    MSU1, welcome to the forum.
Here are the processor upgrades supported by the motherboard:
    Socket type: LGA 1155
Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades:

Core i7-2600 (Sandy Bridge) quad core
    95W
Core i7-2600s (Sandy Bridge) quad core

    45W
Core i5-2400 (Sandy Bridge) quad core

Core i3-2100 (Sandy Bridge) dual core
    65W
Core i3-2100t (Sandy Bridge) dual core

Any of these should work fine with your system.  However, if you decide to do further upgrades, it will probably require a power supply unit (PSU) upgrade, as well.  The existing PSU is only 250W.

  • Just ordered iMac and shipped, but it will use Ivy bridge CPU???

I heard new CPU will be used for iMac, should I refund and order again? Or it has already installed???

No. It will have the old processor which is an Intel Core i% or I7 also known as a Sandy Bridge.
The Ivy Bridge has not been released you so you can't get it.
You can return it and wait for the Ivy Bridge that is your chose.

  • Ivy Bridge CPU 4 short beeps then Power down

Hi I just got a I7 3770 and when trying to get the board to post it beeps 4 times (short).
I was wondering what the beeps are telling me.
I am using a Z68 MA G45 (B3) board and back in February I asked about a compatible bios and was sent a link to a beta bios that should work.
So I took the risk to try it as I can always get another board if needed as I am building a cheap pc for a family member using the Pentium G620 that I was using till the Ivy Bridge was available.
Hoping I don't need to buy a new board as the 7 series are a little more expensive here. But the extra features will be worth in the long run.
I have asked MSI online support to confirm if the bios is ok but as they are not there till Wednesday as they had 2 days off I wont know for sure till tomorrow.
I thought I'd try anyway as I got impatient.
    Thanks for any help.
    Kevin

I put the Pentium G620 back in and it would not stay on and no beeps at all.
Then I swapped the I7 back in and still the 4 beeps.
So I took a break and decided after an hour searching the web for help I would try the Pentium one more time.
And this time it worked ok and brought up the bios message that said there was a CPU/memory change and to press a key to go into the bios to reset the info.
So as it's late here (Melbourne Australia) I left the pc alone after switching the power off and will continue tomorrow.
So tomorrow I should know if the bios I have is compatible with the Ivy Bridge and if not I will get a 7 series board.
I just have to return the cheap board I brought and will get a credit towards another board.
Pity about the bios but that's technology for you.

  • [p67a-gd65] B3 revision keeps cpu at 16x?

I noticed a slower then usual pc after I replaced my motherboard. I did 3dmark and I noticed a drop from 6500 cpu to 2200 cpu points (3dmark06). So I started checking and what appears; my cpu is ALWAYS on 16x multiplier. Even if I stress it with AIDA.
I already tried updating 1.8 bios to 1.9 and it did not help (that also restored defaults).
Also I tried manualy increasing vcore from 0.92 (auto) to 1.2 (fixed), didnt work.
I also tried to disable EIST completely> didnt work.
    Any suggestions :S?

Remove the PSU power cord, clear CMOS, load Optimized Defaults, & give it another try.
    Tried this, same issue (!).
Hereafter I unplugged all hdd's, connected a different 500 GB sata drive. Installed windows 7 on it and tried again.
    Exact same issue (!).
edit: even when I disable c-state it runs at x16, however cpu core goes up to 1.176 instead of 0.9xx

  • P67A-GD65 (B3) i7-2600k CPU Sandybridge with wrong Ivybridge BIOS

    Svet,
I downloaded the USB flash tool and am getting ready to use it but need to make sure I am doing this correctly.
    IMS
You see, I made a mistake and upgraded my  BIOS to an ivybridge version when I have a sandybridge  . The current BIOS Is version E7681IMX v4.3. My MOBO is an MS-7681 V2.01
Before trying the forum update tool I tried to flash using the M-Flash utility but tells me that the BIOS is not compatible with this version.
I am not sure if you need more info, but I hope you can help me out. I rather not buy another MOBO but ready to do so if that is my last option.
    Victor

If being at 4.3 going back to a Sandy bios is downgrading.
A downgrade requires a special archive and is impossible without.
If wanting to downgrade to 1.19/7681v1J (latest Sandy bios) you must use the attached and NOT unpacked archive.
For BIOS Update >>Use the MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<< => Mode 1: Point to archive file!
*NOTE: Make sure you unplug your PSU from A/C power and properly >>Clear CMOS Guide<< after flashing.

  • P67A-GD55 (B3) bios update to Ivy Bridge, question regarding PCIe-3

    Hi,
Ive just updated my P67A-GD55 (B3) to the 4.0 BIOS for Ivy Bridge and I am a little confused as to whether of not I will be able to benfit from PCIe-3 support on a Ivy Bridge CPU?
I intend to run 2 x GTX 680 in SLI, will I still be limited to PCIe-2 of can my board now take advantage of PCI-e 3?
    Many thanks in advance.

For PCI-E 3.0, a Z68 G3 series mainboard with an Ivy CPU would be needed at the minimum. So far, you are not really missing anything anyway. PCI-E 3.0 doesn't seem to be reported as providing all that much of a performance benefit with current apps, programs, and games.
Having tested GTX 680 on the P67, I must say it is in itself running PCI-E 2.0 very impressive.

  • P67A-GD65 (b3) bios 4.0 problems

Hello guys, this is my first message in this forum and I'm so excited
    Here is my problem:
After updating my bios, i can't get my old result@overclocking, i was using my CPU@4,5ghz but now i only have 3,8ghz stable. And my ram's have xmp problem, i can't activate xmp for g.skill ram's, it was ok before update but now... how can i solve this problem, anybody has this problem?

You should not have flashed 4.0 BIOS unless you intended to use Ivy Bridge CPU, in fact 4.0 is no longer available to flash.
There are beta BIOSs available for keyboard/mouse issues and other similar problems but 4.0 was only available for Ivy Bridge CPU support and that did not work out so good and 4.0 was removed from BIOS downloads at MSI shortly after it was released.
       >> P67A-GD65, GD55 and GD53 [MS-7681] - BIOS/UEFI-Click-BIOS: BETA Releases <<
Unfortunately I don't think there is any way you can flash to the earlier BIOS you had before. I imagine it could be done by a shop or MSI using JSPI1 but you can't flash it by USB yourself.

  • P67A-GD65 stuck on Windows logo

    Hello,
    I have the following configuration:
    MB: MSI P67A-gd65 (B3) (7681v1J BIOS)
    CPU: Intel 2600k
    GFX: HD7950
    MEMORY: 2 x 4Gb Gskill RIPJAWS 1600Mhz 9-9-9-24 (CR1) (blue slots)
    DISKS: Samsung SSD 470 128GB (latest FW) + Samsung F3 1TB
    Soundcard: Asus Essence ST
    PCIe: TP-Link 150Mbps N
Windows sometimes hangs on boot screen (logo), and I am forced to reset the PC, I must add that I have no OC.
Since ever I experiencing this situation, I already changed GFX, changed memory for a 4Gb kit, changed to black slots, tried with different MB BIOS, reset BIOS and removed the battery for one night, replaced wifi card, use Windows to try to repair, with no success.
I have also formatted my computer several times (Windows 7 x64 original), the first time it boots into Windows it locks on boot screen and I am forced to reset it via button.
The settings I am using on the BIOS are the deafult ones, I just enable CPU power savings (C1E, Overload Protection and C-State.
), AHCI on the SATA ports and HOT PLUG applied to SSD (like MSI advised on the MB site), and I put memory to link and 9-9-9-24 (CR1).
I can also add that some weeks ago I was editing some images, and the computer simply locked, I even lost mouse light. I unplugged it from the wall socket, tried to turn it on but it only beeped, I have reseted its BIOS via button on the back of the MB, the only way I was able get back the computer, was to remove every single device connected to MB and connect it again.
I am begining to think that I have all this time a faulty MB.
Can you please share your opinions?

Hello Bernhard, thanks for your fast response.
I forgot to mention PSU, its a Corsair TX-650W v2, do you think it can be related? At the moment I only have at my disposal a brand new Corsair 430CX.
To be honest I already tried so many things that I do not remember if I have put memory to 1333Mhz (native IMC), I will try it as well.
That last advice I have never done it, I will try it and let you know if it worked or not!

    @JDay,
I am not sure if it applies for laptops but desktop CPU has BIOS whitelist. I came across threads that when customer tries to upgrade the CPU (even in the same series) the BIOS does not recognize the CPU after upgrading due to BIOS whitelist.
Thus I am not surprise if they have BIOS whitelist for CPU on the ThinkPads.
That happens when you try to stick a processor in a motherboard that shipped with a BIOS that was shipped with firmware intended for processors with less cores. Not a whitelist just the firmware freaking out because there were more cores than it was made to handle. This issue was very common when hexa-core Phenom II CPUs came out and could be fixed in all but a few cases (about 1% of motherboard models didn't have an update) by simply putting the old CPU back in and flashing to the newest BIOS firmware revision.
EDIT: If a BIOS update is required you can bet someone over at the MyDigitalLife forums will release a modified one, especially if it is requested. That is the same place you can find a non-whitelisted BIOS for most ThinkPad models.

  • H61MA-E35 (B3) 4 beeps on POST with Ivy Bridge

Just built this machine, it has never posted and I am getting a 4 beeps and then a reboot whenever it is turned on.
I looked it up online and found it's either it's something to do with a timer(?) or the most probable cause being the current bios not supporting the Ivy Bridge CPU I'm using.
So basically, am I indeed correct in thinking the CPU isn't compatible with the current BIOS? If so, is there anyway to flash it without a cpu/using the incompatible CPU? As I don't really want to buy another processor just to use this one.
    Thanks for any help.

As you don't know what bios you have it is hard to say but it is an old B3 board so most likely it has no Ivy Bridge supporting bios. You could add S/N to say for sure. If it has a bios not supporting Ivy Bridge there is no other way than using a Sandy cpu to update bios or asking MSI or a pc shop to do it for you.
