P67A-GD65 (B3) will not boot with external USB DVD connected.

Damnedest thing... just put the build together last night and this was the biggest issue. If I connect my external Samsung USB DVD RW the system stops booting and only displays (B3) in the bottom right corner of my display. If I remove the USB plug the system boots and operates normally. If I connect it to the USB port after boot the system recognizes it and it works fine. The same issue occurs no matter which USB2/3 port I plug it into. I've banged around the BIOS and cannot see any issues in the boot sequence that would indicate an issue. Anyone else in das same boot?

I just came to the forum for the same reason. I'm glad you had a thread already going. Mine is a Seagate 1.5T USB 2.0 hard drive and the screen reads 98 in the lower right corner. Hopefully MSI will get this fixed soon. Other than that the new system is running great.
They are working on it. They sent me a BETA BIOS to try out. The BIOS v1.10B3 was dated 3-17-2011 and it nearly bricked my system though.  Here is the response I sent to them the other night after a few hours with a massive headache trying to bring my system back up:
Quote
Tried the new BIOS. While it did indeed fix the USB DVD boot issue and let me boot into windows it created a few new issues. After flashing the new BIOS would not recognize my old overclocking profiles from the v1.8 BIOS.. "hole" error. So I manually adjusted all the settings and saved the new settings. I copied them EXACTLY from my previous settings.. I had screenshots which I had printed out as a fool-proof guide. After rebooting I could no longer get into windows. BSOD. If I tried entering the BIOS by tapping the DEL button while booting the system would freeze at the "entering setup...." screen and never progress into the actual BIOS. I unplugged the power, waited a few minutes and held the clear CMOS button on the back panel down for a few seconds. After rebooting I no longer had video output. After much trial and error I ended up having to also unplug my LCD and cycle power on it as well to get video back. But could still bot get into the BIOS by tapping the DEL key during boot. Luckily I have a laptop with all the files on it and I was able to finally re-flash back to the v1.8 BIOS from a USB drive. I'm not sure what exactly you changed.. but I don't think this new BIOS version should leave BETA status.
To their credit they promptly responded the next AM:
Quote
There were some changes to the CPU voltage, so your overclock settings may not work properly. We are still working on a 1.A release version. It will be updated to our website soon. http://www.msi.com/product/mb/P67A-GD65--B3-.html#/?div=BIOS
I only wish they had informed me of the changes to the CPU voltage up front or included a change log so I could have made an informed decision as to whether or not I wanted to try the BETA BIOS. I was under the impression (mistakenly) that it simply addressed the USB DVD issue. I'll wait for the new release BIOS. I can live without the external USB DVD being plugged in at boot. Bricking my MOBO and having to RMA would be a far less desirable outcome. :p That said.. I'd still recommend this MOBO. It has relatively few issues and MSI support is responsive so far.

    Short version:
My system will not boot but gets stuck at "09 Power on South Bridge Initialization"
    Detailed description:
I just bought this system and am when I tried to start it it got stuck at "09 Power on South Bridge Initialization". I have removed everything that is not necessary (gfx-card, HDDs, etc.) and only have the CPU and one memory stick inserted (in slot 1 as per the manual). I have also unplugged and put back all power cables from the PSU several times. I have also tried using BIOS A and B.
As I read on this forum that a BIOS update was needed for IVY-Bridge CPUs I bought a 3930K today to see if I could get the system up and running but it still gives me the same error code.
My board serial number is 601-7760-010B1312109204, assuming it is manufactured 1312 = December 2013.
I don't know the BIOS revision as I have never managed to get past the 09 status code.
Any ideas on what the problem could be?
Bought this monster PC as I have a delivery for a client in need of some RAM-heavy processing, so am really starting to feel stressed out about this by now.
    Thanks in advance!
    System details:
     - MSI X79A-GD65 (8D) X79 S-2011 ATX
     - INTEL CORE I7 4930K 3.4GHZ 12MB S-2011
     - INTEL 530 80GB SATA SSD MLC RESELLER KIT
     - INTEL 530 480GB SATA SSD MLC BULK (4 of these)
     - FRACTAL DESIGN INTEGRA R2 750W
     - ASUS GEFORCE GT 210 1GB DDR3 PCI-E VGA/DVI/HDMI SILENT
     - KINGSTON 64GB 1600MHZ DDR3 ECC REG CL11 DIMM (4X16GB) W/TS (two kits, 128GB in total, don't really need ECC but that's what I could find needing 16GB sticks)

even compared to just 10 years ago sales staff have became really dumb as there just hiring people who do not care about anything as long as they get there cut of a sale (usually all they know is basic Consumer parts they stock) and nearly non of them unless they specialize in that level of equipment will have 0 idea what they work with on a pro level part (ECC memory tends to be used on servers and Professional workstations so if they do not use that type of gear then they probably have no idea what ECC really is at all)!
also in that time some major things have happened especially with computer parts like the memory controller moved from the Chipset to the CPU same with the SATA controller , onboard GPU (thats now on the CPU and some have it some don't) and alot of other things and I guess that the people you dealed with had no idea the memory support has very little to do with the board (all the board can do is have BIOS Timing sets now and lists of parts it supports) and is now to do with the CPU alot more as it has the important stuff on it (there very close to a SOC (System On Chip) now)!
if you plan on building another computer remember to do some research yourself before you get a CPU as it is nearly the most important thing of all and they have different features tied to them and do not expect sales guys to have a idea unless there also a Technical support staff member too and work on computers that are of the same class your trying to make and have at least used the same level gear (usually if your doing something like that find a friend who is a computer nerd tell him what your trying to do and get him to help you choose all the parts)!
let me know how it goes when you get the Xeon and have it installed?

  • Windows 8 and Canvio Desk 3TB: System will not boot when external hdd is connected

    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Operating-Systems-e-g/HP-PAVILION-A6109N-amp-windows-8-System-w...
    Hi,
just recently upgraded to Win Pro on my HP PAVILION A6109N.  I also bought a toshiba canvio desk 3TB.  What I notice is that if I reboot my pc with the extermnal HDD connected, my system will not boot.
I have check my BIOS boot settings and the order of the boot.
I have tried disabling USB Legacy Support in the BIOS
I have reformatted the external HDD
but still my desktop will not boot if the external HDD is connected....If I disconnect the external HDD...the system will boot up ....
I am at a loss....*** scratching my head ***

Update:  The only solution for me was to format the drive as ext3 and plug it into one of my Asus RT-N66U USB ports, as most routers don’t yet recognize 3TB drives as NTFS.  It’s not much help to people who don’t have a router with this capability, and it also slows transfer rates to ~12MB/s.
Given the short length of the cable, your only other options are to have the 3TB Canvio sitting right next to you so you can unplug from a front USB port before each boot, or place it towards the rear of your desk and crawl under the desk to disconnect it from your PC prior to each boot.
It's a pity because Toshiba produce great internal HDD's, but my experience when it comes to external drives is they're simply junk.  I wish I had read the reviews before purchasing.

  • IMac will not boot with external monitor connected

    Hi everyone,
I have a mid 2010, 27" iMAC.  If I connect an external monitor to the Mac (using display port), everything works as it should. If I try to reboot or do a cold boot while the external monitor is connected the system boots to a white screen and no further.  Sometimes I get 2 spinning colored wheels, but nothing more.  If I let it sit at the white screen long enough the screen saver kicks in and everything goes black, move the mouse or hit a key and the white screens come back.
I've tried a few things (that I've found on-line) but I'm an old PC user (25+ years) so I'm not used to or know all the tricks or what I really should be trying.
I just upgraded to Mountain Lion thinking maybe that would help, but no change.
Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Sorry about my lack of details, I am using the Apple brand of display port to DVI adapter, a DVI cable that is plugged into an ACER 26" monitor (not sure of the model nuimber right now as I am at work).  This monitor and DVI cable worked fine during reboots/shutdowns, etc while connect to 2 different Intel based PC's that I have that also run dual monitors.  As I mentioned I've done PC work for many moons and would know how to check for drivers, etc, but now in the Apple environment I am lacking these same skills. So I've done all the standard stuff, switching known good cables etc, but I am unsure of how to uninstall drivers and those type of tasks if need be.  I know it could be a monitor problem, but that same monitor works fine while connected to the PC's that I have.

  • OS X will not boot if External HD is connected...

    Hi,
I am running an iMac with Leopard, and Windows Vista through boot camp. My system works fine when nothing is connected, but if my external hard drive is connected, the system hangs on start up. I cannot even get into the boot camp menu until I power off my external hard drive. It seems like the system is trying to boot from the external hard drive, but there is nothing there. If it makes a difference, my external HD is formatted as FAT32 so that both OS X and Windows can read it.
Any ideas on how to get my mac to ignore the external HD when booting would be appreciated. My HD is behind my computer, so it's not convenient to reach back and power it off and on again every time I want to boot up.
    Thanks.

Turns out it wasn't the external HD at all.... It was my Canon printer....
I tried a different external hard drive (no usb hub) and the system worked fine... So I tried my original external again with nothing plugged in, and it worked fine... Then I started plugging a bunch of things in (ipod, smart phone, etc) and it still booted. As soon as I plug the printer in it won't boot.
I unplugged all of the devices from my mac and plugged the printer directly in, and it won't boot. So whatever the issue is, it's actually caused by my printer... Canon Pixima MP130... The only reason I can think of why it would cause the system not to boot is maybe because it's trying to read the card reader? Strange.

  • More detail and a reply for the CQ50 - 130US will not boot with 8gb ram post

The specs, on the web site say that the  max memory supported is 3GB DDR2 because the notebook was built with the OS Vista(32 bit) installed so that’s why the manual has the 3 GB max. memory supported limit. The 32 bit OS can’t address memory over 3.12 GB.   To my mind that is not a spec. but rather a tech. writer who made a mistake and copied the sales literature.  With Windows 7(64 bit) Pro. installed the OS can address up to192GB of memory if the system supports it.  Other Compaq and HP Notebooks can deal with 8GB of memory installed. That’s why I would think HP’s could easily fix this with a patch or use one of their other BIOS’s.
The difference between 4GB and 6GB is that with 6GB system runs faster and the display quality has improved.  I have set the cache size to large and the executive paging is set to off in the registry. The menu(System Properties - Performance Options – Advanced – Virtual Memory) is set to automatically manage the paging file size.

You should keep it in the original; thread you started.

  • MBP15 1.83 GHz Will Not Boot With 3GB Upgrade

I'm trying to increase my MBP's ram to the 3GB limit. This is a 1.83 GHz 15" model.
It will not boot with 2GB & 1GB sticks of identical mfg & specs. It will boot with one or the other...
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Stradioti

    Hi
according to the Apple specs for the 1.83GHz mbp's - 2Gig of memory is the limit......
512MB (single SODIMM) of PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 memory on 1.83GHz configuration; and 1GB (single SODIMM) on 2.0GHz configuration; two SODIMM slots support up to 2GB
    Crucial Memory says the same.

What lead_org is referring to is commonly known as "re-balling" which involves unsoldering the Southbridge chip from the planar, replacing all (6-700) solder balls with new ones and then re-attaching it under heat/pressure.

  • HP G62 Will Not Boot With Power Cord Plugged In

I have an HP G62 laptop that is about four years old. I've had a couple of problems with it before that were resolved relatively satisfactorily, however five or six months ago I started having a new issue. The laptop will not boot with the charging cord plugged in, whether there is a battery in it or not. Nor will it return from sleep mode (screen black, status light on the power button flashing) with the charging cord plugged in, whether there is a battery in it or not. It simply shuts down and I end up with an error screen the next time I boot up. I have tried other charging cords and it has been the same, however the cord will still charge the battery. This means I have to charge the battery, unplug the cord, boot up the computer. This annoyance is worsened by the fact that the battery  is old and unable to  hold charge for very long at all and I fear one day even the battery won't be enough to boot the computer. Can I fix the power cord issue? Should I buy a new battery? Or let my computer give up the ghost and scrounge for a new one? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

the charger input could possibly need replaced and/or the charger

  • Why wont my macbook pro boot with external hard drives connected?

After two years of uninterrupted success running my MBP with five external hard drives attached (two USB, two eSATA with LaCie Expresscard 34, one FireWire 800), my MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion 10.8.2 installed will not boot with the drives attached. Starting up with the option key depressed does not work. Anyone have insight? This didn't happen until I upgraded to 10.8.2, so is there a bug fix needed in that update?

Update, I reset the PRAM (i think) and now the chime is back as I start up... small win but thats all it does.
So I decided to dload a copy of Lion and burn to a disc, then try and boot from there. When i boot holding option and select the dvd it sounds like something is happening, contstant turning or reading of the disk, but nothing is happening on screen, just my old friend the apple logo and his mate the spinning wheel. Starting to concede now, just hoping to get my data back, its mostly photos and some files i cant duplicate.
I am going to purchase Mountain lion on my current apple ID using a friends macbook and try and reinstall from there. Although i never had Mountain Lion installed in the first place (just lion) there isnt an option to buy lion on the app store (i dont think)  This is prob my last spin of the dice i think before handing it in, unless anyone on here has some ideas....

  • External Firewire Drive Will Not Boot with 10.5.1

I have a Intel Mac Mini and I tried to install Leopard onto a external Firewire Drive. I have done this with 10.4.11 and all works well. The Mac Mini is running 10.5.1 on it's internal drive. I attached the Ext FW drive 320 GB and formatted it using 'Disk Utility' GUID format. I next installed 10.5.0 on the Ext FW Drive. I can shutdown and reboot with 10.5.0 using the firewire drive as the booting drive. I next installed the 10.5.1 update and when it completes it requests a restart, I restart it and it never boots back up just the Grey-Apple screen.
I have left it sit for a long time in this 'trying-to-boot' mode for a longtime because I know 10.5.1 may restart more than once on initial install. but nothing. I have also tried partitioning the drive into 3 40-80-180GB drives, but still the same behavior.
    Any suggestions?

Went through the motions on that. No positive results. I'm starting to suspect either the enclosure or one of the latest updates.
This what I have found to date.
The Enclosure " Vantec NexStar 3" extrenal USB 2.0 and Firewire. Model NST-360UF-BK
The Drive Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320 GB IDE Drive
I tried 10.5.0 on an Intel Mac Mini. (GUID format) It boots ok. Install 10.5.1 manually downloaded or automatic it will install the update but will no reboot.
(this part I have to verify a second time) tried the same enclosure on a G4 . I attached the drive formatted it for a PowerPC install and boot. Installed 10.4.10 but not the latest security updates, JAVA, and QT. It will boot ok from the external FW drive. I next install the latest Updates via the update app in the Systems Preference window. After doing the updates for 10.4.10 it will not boot.
So I'm suspecting either the enclosure or the latest updates

  • System will not boot with Seagate 3Tb expansion drive plugged in.

I have a  HP Pavilion HPE h8- 1214 Desktop ,  I recieved a Seagate 3TB expasion drive as a gift but when plugged in, the system will not boot. It turns on but thats it.  It never gets to the boot sequence. I have it plugged into the top 3.0 usb slot and have tried all of the other slots as well with no sucess. But if I leave it unplugged the system boots right up. I can then plug it in and it works fine. I have plugged it into my wifes HP All- In- One and it boots fine and works.  I have a WD 2TB drive that works fine as well on my system . I have searched Segates support for hours and all they say is to change the boot sequence. Have tried that, no go.  What they dont get is no matter what I do if that drive is plugged in it never gets as far as booting and reading the boot sequence. Please help. Thank you!

    Hi NcBunky,
Are you using Win 7 64 bit? Did you update the Texas Instruments (TI) USB 3.0 XHCI Host Controller?
I have an H8 1380t PC. Updated the TI USB 3.0 driver and had the same problem.
When booting the PC with the USB 3.0 external drive connected to the PC the PC would not boot. When booting the PC with only the mouse, keyboard, and a USB 2.0 external drive attached the PC would boot. Once booted you could attach the USB 3.0 drive and it worked fine.
Solution was to roll back (reinstall) the TI USB 3.0 XHCI Host Controller to the original factory installed driver.
System now boots with the external USB 3.0 drive attached.
