P67a-gd65 - how to enable marvel sata ports 7-8?

built my first pc.
using p67a-gd65.
ports 1-6 are managed by intel code, if I understand correctly.  They work fine and I can see them in the bios.
ports 7-8 are managed by marvel code, if I understand correctly.  They do not work and I cannot see them in the bios, but I do see a reference to marvel at boot-up.
is there something special I have to do to enable ports 7-8?
I searched the forum and can't find anything on this.
thanks in advance for any help you might provide.

I must be missing something; exactly where and how do I enable the controller?
when I look at 'system status' I see
sata port1
sata port2
sata port3
sata port4
sata port5
sata port6
and it shows the devices I have plugged in, and that is good.
I then see
e-sata port1
e-sata port2
where 'I thought' sata port7 and sata port8 would be listed, and they show a status of 'not present'.
thanks

  • How to use MacPro SATA ports 5&6 in Vista

Just spent 2 days figuring this out, so in case someone else is banging their head here's the fix.
To get Vista to enable all the SATA ports on a new MacPro ( so you can add eSATA or extra drives ) you need to force vista to use the "Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller" instead of the "Intel 631xESB/6321ESB...-2680" driver.
Additionally you need to follow the instructions at Enable AHCI booting in Vista after installation.
Ignore the other posts about using Grub, and hacking the firmware, booting Linux and other kinds of crazy. The intel chipset supports AHCI if you force it to use the right driver.
Once finished you need to restart your mac and you should now see 3 x "Intel 631xESB/6321ESB...-269E" adapters, and ATA Channels 0-5, after windows redetects everything.
You may need to download the latest (8.2.x.x) drivers from Intel to get the best results, but it should work with the latest Bootcamp drivers once you force the correct AHCI driver.
You still probably won't be able to get Vista to boot to port 5 & 6 drives (maybe with some Ghost magic), but at least you can use them for something. I've got an external 3.4 TB eSATA array, works great with nothing more than forcing the correct drivers.
OS X already see's the extra ports so nothing needed there.
My install was on Vista x64 with SP1 & Intel 8.2.
    Hope this helps.

I wonder if he is referring to this, the closest I could find after Google and trying to find AHCI driver.

  • Enabling all SATA ports on a 875P Neo-FIS2R

I need to buy a new DVD writer, because my old one died. Since most of them are SATA now, I was wondering if I could enable all 4 SATA ports on my mobo, in order to plug the DVD writer? I already have SATA 1 and 2 ports occupied. Thanks.

The two other SATA ports on your board are provided by the Promise controller. It does not support optical drives.
There are still plenty of PATA (IDE) optical drives around, just find one of those instead.

  • How diagnose the extra SATA ports on the Mac Pro (early 2008) logic board?

I have had two SSDs in an OWC multi-mount in the second optical bay, one for Lion and one for Photoshop scratch. However, I recently began having intermittent boot problems. Sometimes there wouldn't be an Apple symbol upon boot/reboot, yet sometimes there would and the computer would boot. I have not experienced any crashes, kernel panics or such.
I thought the Lion SSD was faulty so installed Mountain Lion on the scratch drive, a Mercury Electra 3G which I have recently received as a replacement from OWC due to a previously faulty SSD. However, immediately there were boot problems from that SSD.
I have a feeling there is something wrong with the two extra SATA ports on the logic board. I am now booted off the Lion SSD placed in an external USB enclosure, which works but is a bit slower (I will get a bracket to install that SSD in the ordinary internal bays).
My question is how I can diagnose the logic board generally and specifically the extra SATA ports. I have Tech Tool Pro 6. I also thought I had AHT but on the Leopard DVD 1, which came with the Mac Pro (10.5.2) and on which AHT is supposed to be there is no trace of AHT. Odd. Booting from that DVD will only bring up the Leopard installer.
Btw I do think the Electra is broken because I am unable to boot ML from it in the USB enclosure.
Grateful for any ideas how to check my logic board.
    Cheers
    /p

If you could move the drives easily to another location then you could test the drives and also - make backup images! just to be safe. SSDs and their firmware and problems are almost all too common, even this last June a large issue with SandForce which OWC uses in some/most of theirs, and I get the feeling they are usually behind in testing and sending out firmware updates.
Corsair, Crucial and Intel have all had issues since it surfaced in May.
Diagnosing a motherboard with Apple Service Diagnostic CD is one thing. Swapping out SATA cables though no. WD Lifeguard does check communication to an SATA device drive and can - but you need to see the device in Windows or their boot CD (linux I imagine). Quite good utility though maybe not for an SSD.

  • H97M-G43 how to turn off SATA port in a BIOS?

Hello, i've installed Ubuntu on my first hard drive (SSD) and recently bought the second drive (SSD). I plan to install Windows 8 on it. It is possible to turn off sata port with first hard drive in a BIOS?

Quote from: Nichrome on 31-August-14, 04:20:07
    Hello,
Not really disable SATA port, as if something is connected then it will detect this. If not, then no.
Go into BIOS and change boot priority order in order to set HDD or SSD to be #1 when booting. Also when you install Windows, it will actually show you all partitions (both HDD and SSD).
Thanks, how can i correctly change the boot order (Step by step, please)? And what is Hard drive BBS Priorities? And UEFI BBS Priorities?

  • Z87-GD65 - how to make E2200 network port active in S5 system power state?

My question is how do I make the E2200 network port active in the S5 system power state on the MSI Z87-GD65 motherboard?
I require Wake on LAN (magic packet) for my computer but after shutdown the network port is inactive hence the WOL packet can not wake the computer. I have checked and activated the following items:
    On the motherboard
    - EuP 2013 = disabled
    - Resume by PCI-E device = enabled
In Windows 8.1 E2200 network port settings
    - Wake on Magic Packet = enabled
    - Energy efficient network = disabled
After I shutdown (power state S5) the network port activity lights go dark so I assume the port has shutdown as well. On my previous Gigabyte motherboard the network port stayed active allowing WOL packets to be transmitted to turn on the pc. Have I missed a setting on this new motherboard? My workmate also bought the same motherboard and has the same issue.

    Success!
MSI support responded and listed the correct settings and it is working!
    So the correct settings are:
    In the motherboard BIOS:
    - LAN Option ROM = Enabled
    - EuP 2013 = Disabled
    - Resume by PCI-E device = Enabled
In Windows 8.1 E2200 network port settings:
    Under Power Management:
    - Allow this device to wake the computer = ON
    - Only allow a magic packet to wake the computer = ON
    Under Advanced:
    - Energy Efficient Ethernet = Disabled
    - Shutdown Wake Up = Enabled
    - Wake on Magic Packet = Enabled
All working fine now. All I was missing was the "Shutdown Wake Up" setting. I hope this helps anyone else who has this excellent motherboard.

  • How to enable certain network ports on Solaris 9?

    Hello,
I have a requirement to enable certain ports like 166, 177 or 1521 on Solaris 9 machine. I was told that by default all the ports I mention is not unable.
How do I go about to enable those ports?
    Thank you.

I'm a novice when it comes to unix...and to Software/TCP/IP also, apparently. Port 166 is usually associated with Sun Management software. All you need to is install it and make sure that it's running ...then you can try telnetting into it.

  • P67A-GD65 How to stop the motherboard from checking exteral drive when BIOS boot

I got four 2TB hard drives as external drives but every time when I restart my computer it takes so long to get pass the beeping phase. (At least 1 min)
I unplug all USB hard drives leaving only a USB mouse and keyboard and it boots in seconds.
So I was thinking there is a way to stop checking the hard drives in the BIOS.
    Does anyone know?

Nope. It is part of the normal POST procedure. If the externals have a power switch, have them off at POST and turn them on once in the OS.

  • [BUG] Marvell SATA drivers v1051 on P67A-GD65 (B3)

    Hi folks,
NOTE: After further testing, drivers 1.0.0.1047 (the ones found on the MSI website) do NOT have this issue, only the driver version 1.0.0.1051 (See post #4).
Discovered a bug on the Marvell controller drivers version 1.0.0.1051 (the ones found on the DVD that comes with the MB).  MB is the P67A-GD65(B3) with BIOS 1.9
When I wake up from suspend, 4 times out of 5, my cpu will show 10%-13% of usage caused by Interrupts (shown in Process Explorer).  When I open the SysInfo window of PE, I see that ~80% of the core0 is being used just for said interrupts.
This only happens when you resume from suspend (haven't tried hibernation since I won't use that).  It never happens if you just boot normally.
After debugging this for a few hours (xperf traces, performance analyses, latencymon.exe), I finally figured out which driver was causing this and it turns out it's the Marvell Controller one.
    1) When I disable this controller (only this one), this issue *never* happens.
    2) if I uninstall this driver *while* the interrupts are going bonzo, the interrupts go back to normal.
    3) when Using the default Microsoft Drivers for this controller, the issue never happens.
    - To recreate, just install the drivers (and perhaps do *not* connect any drives to connectors 6-7 (or 7-8) on the mb).
    - Go to sleep mode (I suspend to memory here.. not sure what happens on hibernation), then resume a few times, and you'll have the interrupts start going crazy.
Hope this is the right forum for this.. if not, I apologize in advance...
    Regards,
    M
P.S. This happens whether I overclock or not (currently not OCing and it happens just as frequently)

Bah!  I couldn't let it go when I saw that the drivers on the MSI site were version 1.0.0.1047 instead of 1051   ( hate leaving a job unfinished).
So I decided to install the ones on the website, and they work perfectly (in regards to the interrupt after resume issue).
So, thanks for the pointer Jack  .  I now know that I'll be able to use the 6GB sata ports if I ever need them with the proper drivers (Microsoft's only support 3GB I believe).
    /cheers
    Regards,
    M
P.S. Makes you wonder what they changed in 1051 though.

  • P67A-GD65 (B3) Marvel 6gb/s sATA performance?

I was talking "elsewhere" on a forum, and the topic of the marvel chip came up. It was argued that the design / implementation of the Marvel controller on these motherboards all were the 91xx series, and they all had a pretty horrifying flaw. They share a 5gb/s bus. For something that is said to support 2 6gb/s devices, that is pretty devastating, so i had to come here, where the knowledge about all things MSI is at its highest density. I mean, if the answer is out there, then it's more likely to be here, then anywhere else.
    So.
Is this issue a part of the P67A-GD65 (B3) motherboard design?
Assuming the first answer is yes, is there anything you can do to minimize the impact of it?
Thank you for your time & effort.
    B!

It's actually not an issue with the mainboard design, it is a problem with the Marvell controller itself. It is an add-on feature to provide SATA III function, but it is not the best. ASMedia controller isn't really a lot better either. At least the Marvell allows RAID for those that desire it. The answer is in the Intel 'native' SATA III controllers which are quite good. A lot depends on the drives used. With spinner HDD's, SATA II or SATA III doesn't make a lot of difference in their performance anyway.

Not really, other than maybe a Z87 with all the SATA ports Intel controlled SATA III.
Added: I have no experience with them, but maybe an aftermarket add-in SATA III controller card would work better.

  • P67A GD65(B3) Bios 4.1: 'zombie' IDE port 5&6 still found when AHCI is enabled

When I enable AHCI for Intel Cougar Point PCH SATA the first controller is utilized for all 6 SATA ports as it should be. The second controller (Device 31: Function 5) that is used for port 5 & 6 in IDE mode is still being found by Windows (PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1C08) even though it should have been disabled according to Intel.
At least it doesn't seem to cause any problems...

Ok, let's try this. Intel did not make the mainboard you have. MSI has given all the SATA ports their own description & layout names. So, the Intel controlled ports on your mainboard are ports 1 through 6. Ports 7 and 8 are controlled by the external Marvell chip. The I/O panel eSATA ports are controlled by the JMicron chip. There it is. The Intel controller handles SATA ports 1 through 6 all at the same time. You set AHCI and it is AHCI for all 6 ports 1 through 6. Ports 1 and 2 are SATA III and ports 3 through 6 are SATA II. The external Marvell controlled ports, 7 and 8, are SATA III.
If you have devices in ports 7 and 8 and have the Marvell controller disabled in the UEFI/BIOS and the devices still show, are they functional? If just being reported as something in those ports and they are non functional, I don't see it as any operational problem. I would find it odd though if they show up as active drives in 'My Computer' screen.

  • Cannot Boot Z77A-GD65 w/ASMedia SATA Ports Enabled

Hey all. I saw one older thread with no answers posted in it but I'm hoping someone here knows a solution to this. I'm running a Z77A-GD65 with the latest 10.11 BIOS. I current have an SSD (which has Windows on it), a 1TB HDD for games and two other 3TB drives on eSATA ports. I want to add in another 1TB drive and RAID 0 it with the current one but in order to do this and keep everything else, I had to enable the ASMedia 7/8 SATA ports on the board which I previously wasn't using. I moved my two eSATA connectors onto those ports, put my SSD on SATA1. As long as the ASMedia ports are enabled, my system will not boot. The BIOS gives the error that it can't find an OS on my SSD (even though it does detect properly and is selected as the primary boot device.) Trying to select the SSD by pressing F11 gives the same result. As soon as I disable the ASMedia ports again, the system boots fine.
Basically, the system is rendered useless with the ASMedia ports enabled. Some people say they can boot off of those but the performance is apparently very bad so I'm not prepared to do that. It makes no sense that enabling another controller that has nothing to do with the Intel one breaks that but there we have it.
Is there a solution to this problem? I'm not going to be at all pleased if I have to buy a separate SATA card when I have one on the board that can't be used. Thanks all!

I resolved the problem by deleting the ASMedia drivers and using Device Mgr to "Update Drivers / Browse My Computer" and selecting the Microsoft default drivers. So far my 1 TB Seagate drive is running fine with my CD/DVD Combo on the other port. I don't know if there will be issues if I connect two HDD to the ASMedia ports or not. I thought I would post this in case it would help someone else having issues. I haven't ran any benchmarks for performance but it seems fairly snappy when copying files from my SSD to the HDD.
BTW, I am ditching my EVGA 680 SLI for a new MSI GTX 980 Gaming 4G which will be here tomorrow. It matches my motherboard color scheme and layout perfectly. I am really looking forward to seeing that lighted dragon logo inside my PC's window. I am hoping this MSI video board serves me as well as my EVGA boards have in the past.
EDIT: I spoke too soon. After copying several folders to the Seagate drive my PC froze up. Keyboard and mouse were unresponsive and it required a hard restart. I tried switching ports for the mouse and the light only flickered briefly when I plugged it in. The Seagate drive is working fine on my free Intel SATA port. I have abandoned the notion of running 3 Samsung drives in a RAID array because benchmarks show a performance drop off. Two SSD in RAID_0 seem to be best for optimum performance. I'm still looking forward to my new MSI video board. Maybe this mobo needs RMA? Maybe power issues with the ASMedia SATA ports? IDK, I need to RMA sooner or later because one of the BIOS is fried.

  • P67A-GD55 Sata port multiplier compatibility

    Hello!
I'm trying to figure out if any of the six sata ports on my P67A-GD55 are compatible with SATA port multipliers. I can't find any information on this anywhere.
The ports are two SATA 3 and 4 SATA 2.

    No sir.
Not for us here on these MSI motherboards, and for the most part, not for anyone.
Intel wants ICH* chipset implementations to be point to point, for whatever reason.
They do not support PM, even though they are technically capable of it! Nice guys.
There are two different implementations of PM, one being the "real" Port Multiplier, so to speak.
You might want to do some research, ie. the difference between CBS (Command-Based Switching)
and FIS (Frame Information Structure) aka FBS. Just Google all those terms together like
"sata port multiplier cbs fis fbs switching" etc. and you'll find more information than you ever wanted to know.
    Just kidding.
This will get you going: ATA Wiki @ kernel.org: SATA Hardware Features
While what you choose might depend on your specific PM Host controller in the box you want to hook up,
as a general guide I'd look at the cards that support FBS and have the most "yes" columns; at least AN, and things like NS/NQM are gravy.
You'll notice the one I mention that's on the P67A-GD65, the Marvell 91xx, it supports FBS & AN, and as I said above,
it works great with 4 drives on either port (SilImage SteelVine PM Host). I'm also partial to the Silicon Image SI3132 & 3124 cards,
they rock, and you can find cards based on them for under $20usd anywhere.
If you only have one PM Host you want to connect I'd say it's a no-brainer to go with the same manufacturer for the SATA card's chip.
Nothing says speedy and stable like a matched pair, right?
But to reiterate, no, you will not be connecting a port multiplier host to any of those motherboard ports.
With the Intel RST driver it will detect an "unknown" drive of a whopping 0 bytes capacity.
    HTH!

  • P67A-GD65 new system bios setting recommendations and sata connections

    Hey all,
My old dual core HTPC (after many hours of use) finally gave up the ghost and moved on to the great PC grave yard . I have ordered all the new upgrade parts from Newegg and am looking for recommendations on what bios settings and setup procedures I should use on the initial bootup and Windows load. I'm not looking to overclock I just want a fast stable system for video decoding and playback. It's my understanding from the manual that SATA 1-2 are controlled by the Intel P67 chip and 7-8 are controlled by the Marvell chip but I am unsure of SATA 3-6. Can SATA 3-6 do raid 0? I want to use the Crucial SSD as my primary boot drive and the 2 WD drives on raid 0 as my secondary drive. SATA connection advice (which SATA ports) and Raid Bios setting would be helpful. Should I install the raid 0 drives after I have Windows 7 loaded on the SSD? Any other setup advice is appreciated.
    Here is my setup.
    Windows 7 64bit
    Bach HTPC case
    Ultra LSP 750Pro PSU
    Intel i5-2500 3.3G CPU
    MSI P67A-GD65 Motherboard
Sapphire HD5570 1G RT Video Card
Crucial CTFDDAC128MAG-1G1 SSD 6.0Gb/s SATAIII (Primary boot drive)
    2 WD3200KS Hard Drives SATA 3.0Gb/s (Raid 0)
    Lite-on 12X Blu-Ray Burner SATA
    G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600

Two questions answered. SATA 3-6 are controlled by the Intel P67 chip and do support Raid 0 but I still wonder if I should wait to install the drives until Windows has finished it's install.

  • Can I make a hardware raid with the on board Marvell SE9128 chip on p67a-gd65?

    Hi,
as you all know the RAID 0/1/10/5/JBOD with the p67 chipset are pure software raids or "fake" raids. I saw some sata-raid pcie 2.0 x1 cards on the sell which have the Marvell SE9128 chip. So my question is: Can I make a hardware raid with the onboard Marvell SE9128 chip on the p67a-gd65?

What do you want to say with this? I know what's the difference between a software (fake) and hardware raid? Your post doesn't answer the question. The p67-chipset has integrated software raid. The marvell se9128 is also found on some hardware raid cards. That's why I'm still wondering if it is for a hardware raid on this board or not.
