P67A-GD65 questions about RAID, Overclocking, Sleep, etc

Just got this motherboard a couple of months ago.  Running Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate.  BIOS 1.G0 and yes I am aware that there is a newer version.  It's my first MSI board and I have a few questions.
1) I am interested in setting up RAID 0.  I have 2x brand new Western Digital 7200 RPM drives that I would like to put into RAID 0 for my OS (and backup to another drive of course).  Which ports should I use?  The integrated Intel RAID controller or the third party (JMicron or Marvell?), which I have currently disabled in the BIOS to increase boot time.  The drives are SATA 3.0 if that matters, not 6.0.
2) I have a Core i7 2600 non-K installed.  Would I still be able to use the included MSI tools to overclock, even if the multiplier is fixed?  Should I use OC Genie or Afterburner?
3) What are the BIOS settings that I need to tweak to be able to come out of sleep by moving the mouse or pressing a key on the keyboard?  I tried enabling the "Resume by USB/PCI/e" options but it always makes it so that the computer comes back out of sleep immediately after Windows starts the go-to-sleep process.
4) I am using this is a server.  Is there any BIOS/hardware level power management that I could implement since it's a machine that will likely be powered on 24/7 except for when I decide to put it to sleep?
Edit: and before anyone decides to post some link about the difference between hardware and software raid, I ALREADY KNOW.  I am just wondering based on which controller I'll get better performance out of, Intel ICH10R vs Marcel SE9128.  All of the forum posts I've seen online are only with regards to SSD drives and not mechanical, which will yield different benchmarks.

1) RAID preference is individual. Since you disabled 3rd party for loading time, will you want to sacrifice loading time now? Do you need to connect more drives to the system as a standalone data drive or just those needed for RAID?
2) Overclocking Q&A, please refer to Overclockers section.
3 & 4) I would use S1 and tweak settings in OS Power Management for hibernation settings. Since it is a server on 24/7, usually, just the monitor will be off and screensaver on. The rest are not needed to be powered off or put to energy saving.

  • P67A-GD65 questions

Hi, I have this motherboard and I have some questions. First off, this is my second P67A-GD65. I managed to broke both BIOS with bad flashes and left with a dead mb. Fortunately the store where I bought the mb accepted to switch mine with another repaired one even if their guarantee didn't covered it. After I received the new one, I decided to stop trying to upgrade it. But some time after that I wanted to build a RAID 0 and it was recommended to upgrade the BIOS. So I did it, the exact same procedure as the first time, just that this time it worked.
But I don't know if its me or this BIOS have bugs. I think I used a beta version (4.4B3 says control center). For example, I don't have any beep when turning on the PC. At first I thought it was my case, probably a broken speaker. But a month ago I bought a new case and I made sure to plug in the speaker. Still no beep. Its not like it mathers me, but I think this is not right. Front-panel usb can't boot USB sticks, I don't know if this is a configuration failure of this BIOS. I remember I could boot from the front USB with my old BIOS.
So here I am, again like before, I don't feel comfortable with re-flashing my bios (if thats whats failing) because I don't know why I bricked my mb the first time and I don't know why I didn't brick the new one after. I just don't understand the way to flash or something. This is not my first time flashing things but for some reason I'm struggling with this mb.

It's meant to be like that. modernb boards with current bios only beep in case of problems. Most considered the starting beep annoying and it got removed (as it is useless anyway).

If back panel booting usb works it is no config problem. Most likely an issue with the case. Try the other front panel USB headers on the board too.

4.4B3 is indeed the latest beta bios or to be correct the last bios there ever will be for that board. The last official is 4.3.
If you want to downgrade to it:
1.) >>Use the MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<<
A.) Download the attached archive and place it on your desktop. Do not decompress.
B.) Download and install the Forum flash tool.
C.) Insert your FAT32 formatted usb stick.
D.) Make sure the legacy USB is enabled.
E.) Start the forum flash tool and select option 1. Then point the tool at the compressed archive we downloaded earlier. Then to your USB Flash Drive.
F.) Boot to the USB and follow the directions. MEMTEST is included with the forum flash tool and it is recommended to run this prior to any flash.
2.) Once the flash is complete, you must download and install the latest ME drivers:

BIOS update could depend on exactly which CPU is selected, but for most, the BIOS of 1.4 seems to be the current release version. It supports the majority of CPU's to date. If not planning on OC'ing, or any glitches encountered of compatibility issues, no need to update BIOS. Your 8800gts should run great.

  • Satellite U405D - Several questions about overheat/disassembly/upgrade etc.

    Hi there,
I have several questions about my one year old Satellite U405D-S2910
1- When it works, after 2-3 hours (I usually run small programs like safari, msn messenger and bsplayer) CPU gets 85-90 C (178-188 F). When I play Age of Empires 2 (Come on, its an ancient game) like 2-3 hours it shuts down itself. What could be the possible reason?? By the way, let me inform you about the climate of the town I live, temp 30C - humidity 25-35% (nowadays).
    ps. Cpu= AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Processor. Model, RM-74
2- I'm going to disassemble my laptop in order to clean its cooling units (I think reason of overheating is this). It doesnt seem like a desktop, so complicated. Ive seen a step-by-step disassembly(btw, its so hard to spell disassembly:) I think Im going to do this. What are your suggestions about it? any experiences could help me?
3- My laptops Ram memory consists of 2X2GB PC5300 DDR2 667 MHz SDRAM, I want to replace it to 2x2GB MACH XTREME DDR2 1333MHZ CL9 NOTEBOOK RAM. Should I do it? Does it fit my laptop, work stable? any suggestions?
    ps. mainboard chipset AMD M780V
4- finally :) , Should I use 64 bit OS or 32 bit OS (win7)? what OS would you use if you were me?
    Thank you.

    Hi buddy,
1+2. I think everything is related to a higher internal temperature and you should clean your notebook using compressed air spray. Therefore its not necessary to disassemble it, just blow gently and shortly the air through the notebook. You can buy such compressed air spray from every computer store I think and it takes only 5 minutes.
You can find an useful article about this here:
    3. In my opinion you should forget this update! The RAM speed is related to FSB of CPU and as far as I know on Satellite U405D its 667MHz so its already the fastest RAM that you can have. Save your money and buy a bigger HDD or in best case an SSD that can really improve the performance!
    4. In my opinion the answer is clear: Windows 7 64bit.
    Only a 64bit OS support full 4GB RAM. ;)

  • Question about Raid set up with (SB600) K9A2 Platinum V 1.0

I am having trouble setting up my raid.  I am using Windows XP Pro and go through the usual set up procedures using F6 command then installing the drivers etc.  Once I get everything up and running installed on Raid 0 the computer works very well for a few days.  Then later BSOD.  The first was a 0000007b stop error, then I got the system back up again only to have it a few days then another BSOD 00000024 stop error.  This time I was not able to bring it back.  I thought my problem was linked to a RAM issue as I was using OCZ PC2 6400 DDR2 OCZ2G8008GQ (2X2GB).  The reason I thought this was when I went to the motherboard site for approved ram, this ram was not there, then on OCZ site it was also not tested, then I went to newegg and used thier motherboard ram compatability screener and it did not show up either.  So I bought the Giel ram and am now trying to set it back up again though I could not get it back still.  So I finally just reformatted the drives (using another computer and a hard drive enclosure)and am getting ready to reinstall everything.  I want to make sure I am using the right SB600 drivers for my application.  I should be selecting AHCI X86 or x64.  This does pertain to the operating system (I am using Win XP 32 Bit) or the processor (I am using the Kuma Athlon X2 7750 2.7Ghz)
I believe I should be selecting the x86 drivers when installing windows.  Am I right?  I just want to make sure I do not screw anything up so as to bring on the horrible BSODs again.  I realize this could be some driver issue as well that could have caused this.  I did everything I could to make sure it was not the hard drives.
The last question I have is:  In order to ensure proper operation of the dual channel ram, (I have read the book, still confused a bit), I must install the ram with one stick in the first slot nearest the CPU and the other in the first slot of the opposite color?  In this case Green/Orange slots.
    Mainboard: MSI K9A2 Platinum 790FX
    CPU: Athlon X2 Kuma 7750 AM2+ 2.7Ghz Processor

OS: Windows XP Pro SP1 (Updated to SP3)

I was just trying to obtain the fastest load times/install times.  When the machine was first running it was very quick with no cpu temps running beyond 34C, no abnormal performance.  This is my wifes computer though.  Things began to go astray after she updated through windows update to SP3.  I am now using a slipstreamed CD with SP3 already on it.  She said she was clicking on the internet explorer "E" icon and it just shut off.  THen when it rebooted (it was still set that way in windows recovery) it started loading windows then BSOD 0000007b error.  I fixed it by finally getting into windows recovery and running fixboot, then fixmbr, then chkdsk /r /f.  It started working fine again.  Then later maybe two days later it happend again this time wihtout the restarting.  She was working on something else this time and it shutdown again.  This time when it tried ot reload windows I was getting the ntfs.sys issue with a 00000024 stop error.  I could not do the same magic with windows recovery any longer.  When I tried it indicated it repaired the boot, the mbr, but when I tried to run the chkdsk, it gave me disk read errors, such as "this disk has unrecoverable errors".  I used Western Digital test programs on the drives by removing them and installing them into an enclosure and taking them to a good computer.  One drive I could see in windows and it reflected 140G/B, the other would pick up but not in my computer.  It also showed the drive as having the entire quantity as the RAID together had of 298G/B versus the real size of the drive 150G/B.  I just figured that was the drive that was set up as LD 1 in the RAID setup (prior to windows) and possible was the drive with he boot sector on it???  I could get another drive and include it into the array, but then just figure I will have to worry about 3 drives versus 2.  She keeps improtant backup stuff on an external drive.  I will tone down the ram to 800.  Should I set the latency in Bios though to the 5-5-5-15?  or just leave everything at auto like I hade done before?  Though this ram is new and was not in the computer when this happened.  I had replaced the other OCZ Gold stuff and put in the G Skill stuff I have now.  I had previously stated Giel, but it is G Skill, sorry about that.  I may just do what you say, guess sleep on it and decide whether to just install the drives with OS/Programs on one and data on the other.

  • Potential new T61 user with some questions about product/support/etc.

    Hi all!
I've been using Dell Latitude's for last 7+ years and been happy with them thus far, as I was able to stay within the C-series thru 3 systems and reuse some components such as batteries, CD-ROM, etc. but now that I'd have to go to D-series, that gives me the choice of going to new vendor...and IBM/Lenovo was the only other choice due to my OS requirement: XP Pro!
So now I'm here asking some questions that I'm still having issues with:
    (I'm comparing the T61 to Dell D530 and/or my C610)
    1) Features that I've used on existing Dell that I don't see on T61 :
        a) Infared port --- I've used to transfer stuff from one sys to another
        b) S-Video out --- I've used to display on TV for some situations
        c) Serial port --- can't recall using it but with my luck, I'd need it sometime.
        d) Parallel port (C610) --- for my really old printer used on rare occasions
        e) Floppy drive --- yes, I still use it for some unusual situations
    2) On Dell, I can put a 2nd battery or floppy drive in the media bay instead of CD/DVD...what about T61?
    3) Support:
        a) Dell forums have 7+ yrs of history and are well used...this forum seems brand new...was there another one before it?
        b) My Dell's have lifetime tech support (ok, so sometimes understanding the folks from India can be an issue) but IBM seems to limit this to life of warranty.
    4) Pricing: T61 would be seem to be, at minimum, about $150 more than similar Dell even with current "sales"...I'm having trouble justifying this...
    5) Things that I see that T61 has that new Dell D530 doesn't:
       a)  built-in mike --- my current Dell has it and I use it now and then so this is a plus!
       b) keyboard light --- nice feature, but couldn't I use a USB one instead if I really needed it?
       c) fingerprint reader --- never used one...how often do people use it?
       d) 2nd card slot for Express cards --- current Dell has two standard slots and I'm using both, though one is wi-fi which C610 didn't have built-in...and other is modem to replace failed built-in...D530 has only one slot, so having 2nd of any type is good.
       e) middle mouse button --- is that what I'm seeing? Or is it something else?
       f) recovery partition --- ok, nice but how much room does it take?
    6) Things that D530 has that T61 doesn't:
       a) 4th USB --- I'm used to only 1 now so even 3 would be big step up...
       b) 15" standard screen --- T61 is only a 14.1" screen and that extra bit of size would likely help, but I'm limited on physical dimensions to 13.5" total width (unusual situation) so a 15.4" wide screen isn't possible...I'm looking at SXGA+ in either case to maximize usage.
       c) recovery CD is standard --- so I'm presuming I'd have to create my own here?
That, I think, about does it...so...any users willing to help me decide if a switch is good for me?
    Thanks!!!
Update: It seems that phone tech support is only available for warranty period with IBM, whereas with Dell, I can still call for hardware tech help (to diagnose problem at least) for "lifetime" or well past paid period, as I've already done in past...comments?
Update #2: Changed the incorrect "R"s to "T"! Duh!
Message Edited by J_Hallgren on 12-28-2007 07:50 PM
A current Dell Latitute user who was looking to maybe switch...But didn't.

I finally made the switch to Lenovo and the Thinkpad line of notebooks and think this was the best move I have ever made in years! I've spent far too much money maintaining a separate notebook (Dell Latitude L400) several custom built desktops.  This December, I sold my desktops, my laptops (I had 2 L400's), and my 20" Aquous LCD TV to finance my Thinkpad T61.  It was well worth it!  I will try to answer your questions in this checklist, which I found to be quite similar to my own .... frighteningly exactly like my own....:
    Hardware Requirements
IR: This is pretty outdated but functional.  I used to use a Palm with IR as well as an IR laser printer.  I ditched both for a PDA phone with bluetooth.  The laser printer is networked now
S-Video: You might be able to get away with a TV tuner cardbus or a expres card.  There might also be external converters that convert from your VGA/DVI (DVI via port replicator) into any variety of video outputs.
Serial: My older Palm had a serial port for the docking station - bluetooth is a good replacement
Parallel port: I currently have a USB to parallel adapter in my bag just in case.  These are cheap cables and work well.
Floppy: I keep a USB one of these just in case.  I find that having fewer input devices on my laptop and leaving them external help keep the machine lighter for my mostly mobile usage (e.g., my L400 with no inputs at all except 1 USB port).
T61 Spare Battery: Uses ultrabay battery - I rarely use the DVDRW drive and leave the ultrabay battery in there while on the go.  DVDRW drive stays in the bag until needed.  I recommend you upgrade to the 9 cell battery with the advanced ultra bay battery, which will give u something like 9 to 12 hours of operating life.  If you are not a fan of the battery pack sticking out like crazy, stick to the letter box format laptop (not widescreen), which will provide the minimum amount of battery pack stick-out with the 9 cell battery.  The 6 cell will not stick out with the letterbox laptop but will stick out with the widescreen version.
Support Options:  I rarely call support so I have no opinion here.
Pricing: Price was not really a concern for me.  I purchased mine for the business look mainly, which Lenovo maintained well.  I don't like the shiny/plastic/toy look of Dell and Apple computers these days.  If anything, consider the premium an investment in the build quality of these machines (or a premium just for the good looks).  I particularly like the roll cage as well as active protection system that stops the hard drive as soon as the system detects excessive motion.
    Included Hardware Comparison:
I like the mic, use it often for Skype and the built in 1.3MP webcam as well.
Keyboard light.... kinda cute but not as functional because it simply is too small.  It was a cute idea that could have been made better had Lenovo opted for a backlit keyboard instead.  That would have been more functional and added to the "cool" factor.
With regards to the Express Card and PCMCIA card slot, I rarely use either because everything is built in.  However, if you want that TV tuner, an express card or PCMCIA card slot is good.  If you opt for the built in media reader, you will be unable to use the express card as the media reader takes up that slot (I might be wrong, but I think the card reader is large enough that it takes up both slots, so u can't add anything anyway - but you should call pre-sales to answer that question).
Middle mouse button: The three buttons in the middle are used for the trackpoint/joystick mouse controller.  I think the middle button is configurable to do various things.  I personally hate the joystick and can only use the touchpad.  The lack of a touchpad was the only reason I did not stick to the smaller 12.1" X line of laptops, which was really more in tune with my size requirements (too used to using the L400 sized machine).
Recovery Partition: This is a cheap way for manufacturers to make it easy for people to recover their systems in case of crash - without the need for any documentation or disc media.  However, it makes it hard for people like me who only use machines after a clean format and customized install of Windows.  This partition is about 10GB and can be erased with special disk format or partition tools.  Windows itself cannot read or delete this partition.  With the minimum size of the hard drives available, this should not be an excessive space killer for most people.  I personally need only 7GB total for OS and apps.  The remaining data I work with is actually streamed from a 500GB gigabit NAS.  I might switch to a 32GB solid state disk one of these days when their performance comes more in par or exceeds traditional drives.
Recovery CD: You can create your own from the recovery partition since Lenovo does not provide any.
4th USB: I only use 1 or 2 as well.  1 for an external micro mouse (I love my touchpad, but it's just hard to use with Photoshop or CAD apps) and a second for a USB memory key.  My other devices i.e., scanner, external mouse, keyboard, are plugged in on my desktop through a USB hub that goes to a single port on my docking station.  So yes, your docking station will probably remove the need for more than 2 ports.  Although, I do find it odd there are only 3 ports... such an odd number.
Screen Size: I personally wish I could have gotten the X series of laptops but the 14.1 was the only other mobile solution.  For the larger screen size, docking station to my 24" Dell 2405FP.  The compact nature of the T series makes it pretty thin and compact though... it was not too much bigger than my L400 - at least, not uncomfortably bigger.
But yeah, I think if you make the switch, you'll be getting yourself a solid machine that will keep u going for years.  The Latitude line of Dell's were really good, but overall, I feel that the nature of Dell's manufacturing process is making it too "cookie cutter" and reducing its overall quality level.  Their earlier lines were awesome, like the D lines you mentioned.  But unless you get the ATG line, you just won't get the same level of quality they used to offer (in addition, the ATG line is wickedly too expensive - I'd rather get a Durabook for military grade spec at a fraction of the price).
    Anyway, have fun shopping! :-)
And moderators or employees of Lenovo, don't you guys get referral bonuses for giving your employee discount code to friends and family?  *wink*

  • Questions about e-mail sync etc...

    Hi,
I will be setting up a new Palm Pre Plus Verizon phone soon but had a couple of questions to make sure I now what's possible.
    1) Is it possible to sync only the Calendar / Contacts from Microsoft Exchange but not the e-mail (work account)?  Can the same be done for other accounts (google, yahoo, etc...)?
    2) If not, can the Calendar/Contacts be set to automatically download but the e-mail be set for manual control (downloaded by user action only) thus choosing never to download?
    3) If so, can those preferences be set differently per individual account (Exchange vs Google vs Yahoo etc...)?
Also...I've seen several Palm reps on the posts suggesting users check out homebrew / 3rd party opportunities to customize their phones even though Palm doesn't "support them.  Can I get an overall take on whether this is a good idea or not?  Do you run the risk of ruining / breaking your phone using those types of 3rd party solutions (I would assume not if your reps are suggesting to look there...)?
Thanks very much for any input.
    FVP

    Hi,
Thank you so much, you've been a big help.
Would it be possible to bother you (or anyone in the know) with more complicated questions I've been facing trying to set up the palm?
I understand about how to Exchange (and control e-mail).
I still have questions though, on e-mail / contact setup.
My questions revolve around multiple accounts from the same place, and also AIM buddy control (and multiple AIM accounts).
Basically...is it a problem to pull in multiple Gmail accounts for example (more than 1)?  I use 2 different Gmail accounts (one for my friends / family, and one for work)?  That along with the Exchange acount?
As for AIM...I also have two AIM accounts I use (one for friends / family, one when working).  when I created both accounts, they sort of merged, and both stayed on (I wasn't able to control signing one off, keeping one on at a time)?  Am I just not finding the right settings?
Also...the contacts list was a disaster after bringing in the AIM accounts.  Even after deleting the accounts (because I couldn't get them to work right), the screennames stayed in my contacts list, and when I try to delete them (swipe away, choose delete) they say AIM profiles can't be deleted...even though the account is deleted.  Am I missing something??
I read in the manual, you are supposed to be able to stop contacts from feeding from certain accounts by choosing the menue / prerences / selecting the account / stopping the sync....but that wasn't even an option as the only "account" listed in preferences is the Palm account.
I'm just terribly confused on how to set things up and what can be controlled.  Thanks for any help you can provide (or a place I can go for this assistance).
    Thanks!

  • Question about Raid Driver Update V1.3.8.0

    Hi.
Can anyone tell me whats the deal or what are the advantages of doing an update to the RAID driver Toshiba Windows XP MCE 1.3.8.0 ?
Also had another problem..i tried to install the refered driver and it made an error..my raid version is still the one i had prior and couldnt install this version.
    Any help would be cool.
    thanks

As far as I know the RAID driver need to be installed at the begging of the OS installation.
Unfortunately there are no any official documents about the corrections and advantages of any updates.
But I believe the newer driver could be compatible with more motherboards and controller.

  • Simple beginner question about default tables (LOGMNR, etc.)

Hi all, I just installed SQL Developer and the Express server. I have worked with other SQL databases and with remote Oracle databases. But never been a DBA for an Oracle DB. I tried searching on LOGMNR and AQ$_, but couldn't find anything, hence this question.
If there is some online documentation that covers these particular tables and my question, then a pointer to that would be appreciated.
Anyway, I created a connection per the instructions and it seemed to work. But when I look at tables listview, I see a whole slew of tables. I assume these are all housekeeping/meta data tables (eg. information_schema in MySQL). Is this correct?
Also, short of manually creating a filter for each of the file types ("%$%"help", "LOGMNR%", "SQLPLUS%", etc.), is there an easy way to ignore these tables and just see the tables I want to create for testing purposes?
And I am curios why these all show up by default. Could it be that I am expecting something because of experience with other databases and am actually doing things the "wrong" way? Or is this just because I am using the Express Server? Or is there another (very good) reason for these tables to exist?
    Thanks,
    justme

The complete oracle documentation is at http://tahiti.oracle.com. There is a lot of it, but Log Miner and Advanced Queuing have their own manuals. You should also consider starting with the Concepts Manual followed by one of the "2-day" tutorials such as "2-Day DBA"
What user are you connecting as? It sounds as if you are connecting as SYS or SYSTEM if you can see the dictionary tables.
You should create a separate user to connect as.
    (create user myuser identified by mypassword;
    grant connect,resource to myuser;)

  • Question about returning old hubs etc. to BT

Sorry if this isn't quite the right place to post this message, but I'm not sure where else to do so.
I have a number of old BT hubs and hub phones that I want to dispose of. I'm aware that I can request kit return bags from BT but given the quite significant number of items and the effort involved in packaging them up and taking them to a post office I'd like to know whether BT would be seriously disadvantaged were I instead to take the items to my local recycling facility and put them in with other electronic items. Formally the kit belongs to BT, and although I doubt that they'd pursue me for it I wonder whether they log its return as a means of quantifying their environmental credentials.
Incidentally the reason that I have quite a lot of items is that as friends have been sent upgraded hubs etc. they have offered me their old ones as spares, and I have always accepted. It is now time for a clear-out - before I find myself appearing on 'The Hoarder Next Door'!
    TIA.

Rest assured that I will only dispose of my surplus hubs etc. in the electrical receptacle of my local council's recycling facility. I'm well aware that such items contain some very valuable non-renewable constituents, and while the quantities in any one instance are small, this adds up to rather a lot of valuable material across the deployed base, and I'd very much like it to be recovered. Indeed it was what might be considered broadly as environmental concerns that prompted my original post: had I thought that BT would do more to recycle/recover material from surplus equipment than the council would I'd have rung up and asked for as many bags as it took, irrespective of any personal inconvenience.
Of course if BT could produce a long-life hub that could be enhanced in the future purely by software updates then this would be less of an issue. There might be some technical challenges with such an approach but I suspect anyway that it might be asking a bit much for the marketing people to adopt it.

  • Question about attributes, UDAs, Associations, etc

    Hello,
In Essbase database (v 9.3.1), can someone tell me the usefulness/benefits of attributes, associations, and UDAs? What can they do/make it easier to do?
Also in my information tab, I have some fields called variance reporting expense (could be true of false). I noticed that some members have this set to true or false. I wonder what this is for. I don't see the benefit of this extra property/information tied to the level 0 member.
    Thanks in advance.

Attributes are wondereful things. I don't know if I can do it full justice but here are what I consider to be the highlights:
    1) Attributes come in two flavors: member and dimension. Member attributes are applied as a "flag" to specific members so that these members can be easily grouped in a method outside of the normal hierarchy itself. This is the primary purpose, to take an otherwise ungrouped set of members and give them a means to be readily associated as a group. Dimension attributes are a bit more formal, and should be applied to all members in the dimension (ideally). This applies to a given generation or level, of course. For instance, "all" level 0 members of the time dimension could have an attribute association for the day of week, assuming level 0 are the days of a specific year (or set of...). This would then allow you to say you want the entire Month of May as the time member, but then limit it to Fridays only through the "Day of Week" attribute dimension.
    2) There are some specific things that attributes do well, and some "not so much". For example, all attribute based retrieves are necessarilly done using a dynamic calculation -- there are no precalculated totals. On the previous example, to filter a single year to all Fridays would add the 52 Fridays in the year together at retrieval time to obtain the result. OUCH. However, when leveraged with other tools, this becomes a very powerful capability. For instance, an Organization structure could have an attribute for status (open/closed/etc.), type (center/overhead/field office/etc...), along with several other attributes. Now you can leverage these individually or in groups to "fine tune" your retrieve, by using these "optional dimensions" in a mix and match set which is not otherwise available within a single given dimension.
    3) Expense reporting is best looked up in the DataBase Administrators Guide (DBAG). There are a few easily understood but hard (for me to explain) reasons to use expense reporting, but it mostly boils down to the way expenses are handled for variance analysis purposes. Instead of needing if/then logic to deal with reporting good/bad news variances, expense account flags can make it all be perfectly understood by the finance team.
I realize that a raw list of features doesn't easily translate into a "when/how/why would you use them", so here are some example scenarios that illustrate when/how/why these items may help:
    - If you need to make an alternate hierarchy based on subsets of members, perhaps UDA's are a better option here?
    - If you have multiple elements of information (attributes!) that relate to most/all of a single dimension, an attribute dimension will generally be better.
    - If you use partitions, attribute dimensions become an issue.
    - If you have a small subset of members that are spread throughout the dimension but need to be related in a different way, your options are pretty much UDA or Alternate Hierarchy.
    - If you do variance reports within the model, tagging expense accounts appropriately will automatically handle the sign flip associated with good news/bad news issues.

  • Quick question about hue / saturation / transparency etc

I'm basically doing a simple photography website for a friend, and an trying out a few mouseover effects for the thumbnails.
Initially I tried reducing the transparency, and now the brightness, but neither seem, quite right.
Looking around online for what works well, I stumbled across Peter Lik's website.
    If you look here :
    http://www.peterlik.com
And click on Collections to bring up a thumbnail gallery, can anyone with an eye for these things advise me as to what changes in hue / saturation / contrast etc look like they'd create the dulled thumbnail image compared with the brighter one when you mouse over.
    Many thanks.

    Thank you!
I originally just did the thumbs as a 60% opacity, but it was a default white background. I hadn't finished off a full gallery, so was showing the guy the Peter Lik page as an example of the effect. Looking at them together, we reckoned the Peter Lik one was more effective, as the reduced opacity on the white background was a bit washed out looking.
So then I was trying different combinations of the brightness, which needed countering with the contrast, and I couldn't quite seem to get it.
But you've hit the mail on the head - reducing the opacity on a black background is the winner!
Many thanks for prepping that example PNG - much appreciated.

  • Before buying MacPro, some question about Raid

The standard Early 2008 Mac Pro had a disk in (320GB), if I had 3 250GB disk.
1: Can I run in JOBD, or I can use them to raid 0, the org 320GB for time machine?
    2: After I set up the raid 0 (3 x 250GB), can I use the last 320GB for boot camp ?
3: If i set the raid 0 set in Mac, can windows recognize?
    Sorry my bad English

    Yup.
That is what I assumed you wanted, and said.
BootCamp really can't install much of anything. All it does is make it seem easier and introduces the ability to partition off of free unfragmented disk space. The "start install" isn't doing any magic that 'c' will.
But most users don't have the freedom and flexibility to format their drive(s) as MBR and use Disk Utility. And that is who it is meant for. Putting XP on a Mac was great, once the cat was out of the bag and people were challenging each other on who could do it and how.

  • Question about an entry in /etc/sudoers

I have the following entry in my /etc/sudoers:
    user ALL=(ALL) ALL
Now I am not sure what that actually does. Could you explain it to me?

I'm guessing "user" is your username.  That allows you to use sudo with any command.  It is possible to set finer restrictions for some users.

  • Question about RAID Controllers

Which Sun SPARC Servers come with preinstalled RAID controllers?
So far I've found that the SPARC and Netra T Series Servers come with an integrated RAID/disk controller with RAID 0 and 1, but I haven't found anything for the SuperCluster, the Enterprise M-series, or the x86 servers.
    Any feedback is much appreciated.

Thank you for your response. I did some more digging and found some information on the M-Series Servers, and apparently they do come with a RAID (SAS) controller.
"The Sun SPARC Enterprise M-Series also include an on-board SAS controller that supports RAID 1 with the use of Oracle Solaris."
