P6N 650i Bootup Problem

Hey guys, I'm new here and just received my first MSI board from newegg.
I have installed a brand spanking new Core 2 Duo E6400, twin sticks of g.skill 2gb ram, and the MSI P6N 650i SLI motherboard.  I boot up and everything looks good, get into BIOS.  I run into a few small problems.  Boot sequence option didn't show up.  Tinkering around, I got it to show.  How I did it I havent the faintest clue.  Well I change everything to my liking, and continue to boot up, except I receive an error:
" Boot Sector Write!!
  VIRUS: Continue (Y/N) _  "
The HD did come out of a Compaq system and my buddy said something about proprietary windows xp, tough to fix... not quite sure if he knew what he was talking about, and even if its related... Anyone have any clue?  My stupid self did not backup my hd before my old motherboard fried and so I would like to keep the files there.
On a side note, the CPU is running at a temp of 113 F, I tried to enable it so the fan kicks in at a certain temp, but that doesn't seem to be doing anything either.
Please tell me there is a solution so I end up happy.
Thanks for any and all help.
P.S.  The HD is an 80 GB Hitachi Deskstar, looked it up on their website but couldn't find it.
PPS. I found that the motherboard supports ATA100.  If this harddrive isn't ATA100, would it still work?  Is this even related to my problem?
Thanks again.
EDIT:
This might be important.  Thinking of it as a last plan, I hit Y to see if I can work around it.  It begins to load Windows but before I can access anything, I have to activate it!  I attempted to activate and they wouldn't let me because the computer was sold through Compaq/HP.  Don't have any system discs because I got the computer through a trade.  I'm not about to track down HP/Compaq and figure this out with them because it would lead nowhere.  I can't get past the activation popups.  I do have some old Dell system resource cd's, maybe I could just load up a copy of WinXP from dell?

Option 1 is you have a virus that is boot sectored on the old heap of crap Deskstar
Option 2 is are you running an IBM Deskstar on a SATA II System .... Boot time will be porked all because you want to keep data on an other drive you were irresponsible enough NOT to have on a separate partition??? People with IQ's over 40 usually partition single drive machines to save important data from having to be on the boot partition... DAMNED HOME USERS!
Lastly I label thee a nublett for that post... either upgrade properly and professionally or just don't fricken bother(buy an xbox360 or a PSIII cause you don't bloody deserve a PC)

  • OCing a P6N 650i SLI Platinum ...

I just put together a new system and am in the process of OCing it. I have a few questions and was hoping people here could help.
    First my system specs:
    MSI P6N 650i Platinum
    C2D E6600 OCd to 3150 MHz (350 x 9 / 1400 FSB)
    4 GB (4 x 1) Crucial Ballistix PC6400 @ 800 4-4-4-12 2.2v
Zalman CNPS 9700 LED (wow, what a beast!)
    Antec 900 Case
eVGA 8800 GTS 640 (clocked stock for now-haven't gotten that far)
2 x 160G Hitachi Deskstar SATAs in Striped raid
    Hiper Type-R 580W modular Power Supply (28A 12v Rail)
Sony NEC Optiarc SATA 18x DVD Burner
Win Vista Home Premium x86 32bit
    vCore +.1000
    vRam  2.2v
    vNB    1.3v
    vSB    [stock 1.5?]
    vTT    8%
I have OC'd my E6600 to 3150 mHz (350 x 9 / 1400 FSB). Getting about 28c idle and 45c each core at full load (Orthos). Had some stability issues when I bumped it to 375. I tried bumping up the vCore and vNB to .1500 and 1.35 but still had some stability issues and didn't want to go higher in the volts so I backed down to 360, was stable for about 30 minutes then Orthos threw an error... So I backed down to 350 and I'm totally stable over 4 hours of Orthos--will give it the good 12 hour run this weekend.
I saw something about clocking down memory somewhere in this or anther forum and was wondering if that might have been my problem. I have the mem locked at 800 and timings set to mfg spec, but am wondering if I should be lowering the timing from 800 or loosening the 4-4-4-12 to 5-5-5-18 or maybe doing both to get more stability above 350. Thoughts?
What's the temp I should be avoiding when full load with this CPU? I'm assuming 60c+ is too hot, 50-55c is about as hot as I should run it at full load and not worry. Is that assumption correct? Or can I actually push this chip all the way to 60c without worrying about damage?
What's considered a reasonable overclock expectation on the E6600s? 3GHz, 3.4GHz? 3.9GHz? Should I be super happy with the 3.15 I have now with it running this cool and stable and just stop? If you were in my position, do you think you would try bumping it a little more?
Lastly, upon boot-up I get a message saying something like "you have installed a processor rated at 267MHz. This speed does not match and there will be a degradation in performance running the chip this way" -- or something like that... It's a warning message that shows up right at the beginning of booting just after the system figures the bus is "352 x 9 = 3168" (but cpuz shows 3150, weird). Is there anything to this message or just ignore it? Can I get rid of the message somehow (other than enabling full screen boot up thing)?
Anyway... Awesome experience with this build so far. Having a great time tweaking it!! Loving this Motherboard and chip combo!
Thanks for any help! This board has been a great resource for info on getting the most out of my new system!

When you say "a much higher vcore" push, what would be considered "safe-ish"? with +.1500 (upped it today) Im at 1.47v right now. Guessing stay under 1.6 at the high end?
I'd keep below 1.5V. At a certain point the law of diminishing returns comes up, i think it's a bad idea to burn Vcore for only a few mhz gain - for 24/7 use anyway.

Also... Back in "the day" OCing the FSB was more important that pure clock speed because when you OCd the FSB you Increased the speed of memory transfer. With mem locked, what is the benefit of hitting 401 FSB if you have to down multiply to 8x? at 3200 I'd only be 50 Mhz faster then now. Is the point of dropping to 8x just to switch strap and be able to get another few hundred out of the chip or is there still significance to higher FSBs other than pure clock speed. Are the 3.6GHz clocks you mentioned usually at a 8x setting (450x8) as opposed to 400x9?
I've seen a few posts that lead me to think this board changes strap at 400 Mhz. It could be your chipset beeing unstable at 375Mhz but if it changes strap at 400 it could be stable again at 401Mhz and onward. Dropping the multiplier is required to test this. Say the chipset does become stable at 401 Mhz, but you use x9 multi for 3609 Mhz and your CPU can't handle 3609, then you'd never know.
Test 375 x 8  = 3Ghz first. If this combo is stable then your chipset is fine @ 375Mhz; then it's just your cpu maxing out at 375 x 9.
If this is still not stable then it's your chipset not beeing able to handle 375Mhz, try 401 x 8 next to see if the strap change works.
Like i said i've only seen a few posts wich've shown this board to have a second breath past 400 wich leads me to believe it changes strap or something - It's not written in stone tho, you'll just have to try.
Pushing northbridge voltage a little might help too.

  • Final K8N2P bootup problems solved...!

When I first built this system last week I experienced a really annoying bootup problem when booting into WinXP....the system would lock up with a blue screen *Machine Error* every single time....so I loaded the "failsafe" bios settings, booted into XP finally, and then began a process of elimination among the bios settings to try and determine which ones disagreed with WinXP so much....  (Oh, joy!)
To make a long and tedious story very short, I eventually found that I had to manually *disable* UDMA auto-config for my empty hard-drive slot of IDE0 secondary channel, and in combination with that had to *disable* UDMA auto-config for both of the DVD/CD-ROM devices I had then which were located at IDE1 primary and secondary. (All jumper settings for the drives were correct, btw, and the machine error manifested whether I set CS or M&S or, in the case of my WD boot drive, "stand-alone.")  Once I did that, I could boot fine from IDE0 prime autoconfigged @ UDMA5, and my two IDE1 devices would then boot with PIO4 set by the bios's PIO autoconfig. I had to set it up exactly this way to boot--doing one or the other as regards each IDE channel would result in the Machine Error that I didn't want see--so I had to do both, in other words, to boot.
In reading the forums here I  saw mention of ps2 keyboard problems, but replacing my PS2 kboard with a native USB kboard *did not* solve the problem or change its nature (had no problems with either native PS/2 or USB kboards.)  Then I read about config problems people had with Audigy2's, so I removed  my A2Zs card, refreshed the CMOS, and rebooted--right back into the Machine Error again (unless I manually setup the IDE channel UDMA autoconfig as described above, of course.)  So my A2Zs (0350) was not the cause of the problem.  I did the same thing with my TX4200 PCI RAID controller--again, without positive result.  Last, I disabled WinXp SP2's Data Execution Prevention to see if that might have been the cause--it was *not* (so I reenabled it with the OptIn policy.)  So by then I knew the problem was not caused by my keyboard, my A2Zs, DEP, or my PCI RAID controller--any one of which, of course, *might conceivably* have caused a resource conflict of some kind--so I had to to test out all of these avenues.
That done, I had a hunch and went out and picked up a couple of new DVD/CD-W drives (as described now in my SIG), and lo and behold, from the first attempt I could successfully boot into XP without the Machine Error that had defeated my best efforts at troubleshooting for all of last week--I could boot fine with all of the bios settings for IDE 0&1 UDMA and PIO set to "auto" without incident for the first time!  I was also a bit surprised to see that these new DVD/CD's run natively in UDMA 2--not PIO4 (multi-word DMA) as had both of my former CD-type drives on IDE1.
So the problem having been solved in this fashion I will make the following observation about the K8N2P (I'm running stock bios 1.3):  this board does not like *old crap* connected to it!....  Heh...  My former CD-type drives were scarcely two-years older than the drives I installed today (according to their tagged manufacturing dates), but even so my old drives were "old enough" it seems to not get along with my k8n2P system's resource allocation!  Installation of the new drives solved the last remaining problem that I had, I'm very glad to say.
Although I didn't have to, I also got rid of my old TEAC floppy drive--and replaced it with a USB HDD which is so quiet and unobtrusive I have to pinch myself to make sure it's there...
Finally, along the lines of "old stuff"  I did note that the board does not seem to recognize PS/2 devices using PS/2-to-USB adaptors of any description--so go native whether PS/2 or USB and you should be fine.
I'm certainly relieved--hope this account helps a few folks!

Did you by the way try with one of the old ones as the only optical on the IDE1 port , or have the opticals on IDE0 and harddrive on IDE1.
Some has had success in swapping it around if i remember correctly.
Thanks, syar....  I'm just relieved that everything is working as expected now as it was a bit of a bummer to have to go to a bootup workaround for a new system over something as routine as IDE autoconfig.
Those older drives, a Samsung CD-RW/DVD SM332 and a Lite-On LTR32123S CDRW, came out of my former nf2 (Chaintech 7njs) system--that the wife will inherit from My Most Beneficent Self (which of course was my excuse to build a new system)--and if I recall correctly it seems the combo presented some problems for me there which I finally solved by going to a cable select setting for them in the Chaintech.  So maybe it's just the particular combination of these drives in my case, or possibly something less than completely compatible optical-drive support from the nVidia IDE controller implementation...?  I didn't try swapping them on the channels, but I did try setting the IDE 0 secondary UDMA bios config to "auto" while disabling the UDMA auto-config for IDE1 prime and second--and still got the machine error, and vice-versa.  It does indeed seem to me as if these newer platforms are a bit pickier about what you hook up than maybe was the case in the past (with nf2 and circa core logic.)
Edit: Wanted to add as well that these new DVD/CDRW drives (manufactured mid '04) are *a lot* quiter in operation (aside from being generally faster.)  Spinning up, the old drives reminded me of a washing machine in the "spin" cycle...  I have to listen to even hear these--what a difference a couple of years can make, eh?

P6N Lots of problems please help
    The setup is the following:
    P4 D935 3.2gHz
    P6N Diamond MS-7320 Bios 1.3V
    Corsair XMS2-6400C4DHX
    NX8600GT-TD512EZ/D2
    Seagate Barracuda 7200 250Gb SataII 16Mb
    Akasa 460W Dual Rail
Please help I have lots and lots of problems with lockups that can happen any time post , bios , loading vista and sometimes during OS. Some times will work ok play games etc. Already tried different combinations fitting the mem modules even tried and some pc4200 modules same problems. Spent lots of hours clocking the mems with different settings but non is stable. I am not interested in overcloking just to make it stable to start with. When is actually running is fine is more than enough for me. Already looked to lots of posts on the msi forum but… Since the cpu is old can I go back on an older bios version???? The Corsair modules have to run at 2.1V or is it possible to use them with slower setting. So confused so lost ….. please HELLPPPPP
    Any help greatly appreciated.

please, don't buy any more unneded parts.  first find the problem then buy if no solutions available.
One thing I find with BIOS issues is to do a full clear.
    1. disconnect the power cord from the power supply(turn switch to off if there is one.
    2. hit the power switch to clear the power out of the system.
    3. set the cmos jumper to clear and leave there if one is available.
    4. Pull the battery.
    5. carefully short out the battery connector on the motherboard to drain any power left.
    6. press the clear cmos button and hold for 30sec minimum, if you didn't have a jumper to set.
    7. replace battery, move jumper back, plug in power cord, turn on power sipply switch.
Now it should hopefully power up.  go into BIOS and load optimized results. hit save and exit and when it gets back to the post screen, go back into bios and set your normal MB settings(ie. set boot devices, boot order, disable sound if using sound card, etc...)
go into your H/W Monitor section and list the CPU Vcore settings to make sure it is getting the power it needs.  I just looked it up and it's suppose to run from 1.225v - 1.325v.
also, try your most generic ram you have with auto settings.  the faster the ram usually the more volts they need and default volts are 1.8v for ram and sometimes faster chips have issues with lower volts.
Let me know how this works for you.
    -=Mark=-
ps. make sure everything is unplugged from the computer you don't need.  just cpu, 1 stick of ram, and video. and of course keyboad and mouse.  Please make a signature with all your systems specs including make and model numbers.  I hate guessing at solutions and I'd hate to see you buy any more unneccessary parts because of lack of information.

  • Imac bootup problem

I'm having bootup problems with both my imac and MacBook Pro. It's a coincidence that both are having similar problems I'm sure and wonder if anyone can shed some light on my plight? It's doubly frustrating!
I've gone through the safe boot method and then press restart but both of them still hang as soon as I try to open an application. e.g if I go to the apple icon to "About this computer" it just stalls and stays on the spinning ball. I've also tried the Ctl+cmd+ R option a few times but keep going round in circles. Any suggestions?

  • OLD: Started new Topic: See: New P6N 650i and Overclocking

Hi Forum.. Just built a new box with following components:
    Intel C2D-E6400
    MSI P6N 650i SLI-FI mobo
    Patriot Extreme Performance DDR2-800 (2.2v) memory/2gig
    Rosewill RCX-Z775-SL 92mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler
    Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3320620AS HDD

COOLER MASTER eXtreme Power 650W Power Supply
COOLER MASTER Centurion 5 CAC-T05-UB Black ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
Installed WinXP Pro with sp2 and system is up and running (without a hiccup) quite nicely... PCAlert4 shows: CPU=20c, Sysytem=25c, CPU Fan=2170...  CoreTemp shows: Core#0=32c, Core#1=31c.... My guess is that these numbers are good.
I have built quite a few builds over the last 15 years but mostly on the AMD platform and have "never" attempted to overclock... I was thinking of trying it with this new build as it seems, from this forum, I have all the right components... I would like to try a modest O/C maybe up to 3ghz... I went to the bios and the Cell menu and tried to make some changes  but some items will not allow you to change their values and to be quite honest, I'm not sure "what" values need to be changed and "where", to attain an O/C of 3ghz... I appoligize for my ignorance in overclocking but I really do not want to screw up this system... I was hoping that one of you nice gents out their with the same basic components could point me in the right direction...  "Thanks in advance",   JD <aka: Peckrhead>

    mis dos centavos,
I am another pleased owner of this fine board. Proud to say it!
Great layout, install was a breeze (though MSI is in serious need of a native English speaking tech writer), basic setup went alright,
though I still have issues (probably due to the crappy utilities); but performance and ease of OCing is great.
    Anyhoo, I've been working on/with this cheat-sheet
    Here's a short version-
*Update BIOS to the latest version or not; there are differing opinions on the need to, you have to do
            the cost/benefit|risk analysis.
    Part 2. In BIOS Setup
[ ]   (1) On first boot enter BIOS Setup and select - 'Load Optimized Defaults'
** If you've never seen or figured out how to enter BIOS Setup, you probably need to learn more before
thinking about overclocking. Think about it.
            (2) Save and exit.
ON REBOOT ENTER BIOS Setup again AND SET THE FOLLOWING:
    [ ] A. >>Advanced BIOS Feature

          *CPU 'speed' = ('FSB Clock'  /  4) x 'CPU Ratio';
            ie. , 1064 / 4 = 266.6 x 8 = 2128MHz core 'speed' (E6400 spec).
               *(b) is DDR speed or frequency. Since 533 / 2 = 266.65 MHz; result
should be 1:1 FSB|DRAM ratio. if 'System Clock Mode' is [MANUAL],
                 (b) can be any speed supported by RAM and FSB|DRAM ratio may vary.

As you increase the FSB, the RAM will follow in the pattern of 1:1
    shown in BIOS.
When 1FSB:1RAM is overclocked above the rated frequency of your RAM
use the following values: Timing: 5-5-5-15; vDIMM: 2.#V, max per DIMM.
    e.g. DDR2-667 4-4-4-12 1.9V operating at ~400Mhz will need to be set
    to 5-5-5-15, 2.1 - 2.2V.
    5. Save settings and reboot.

  • P6N-SLi 650i RAM Problem

    Hi guys,
I just bought an MSI motherboard - P6N-SLi with the 650i chipset and 430 southbridge. It's a nice motherboard - although that northbridge is pretty hot.
Anyway - I bought a gig of Ram for it too - 2x512Mb OCZ which I know to be some decent enough memory.
The problem is - on the first night whilst installing win xp - it froze. no BSOD - no restart - just froze. I tried again and it was fine. Once XP was installed etc - it began to freeze - totally lock up - every few mins. I had to restart every time. I ran stress tests in the new gfx card (nvidia 8800gts) which was fine. I checked temps and ran other tests and the CPU and PSU and HDDs were all fine.
I had my two sticks of RAM in DIMM 1 and DIMM 3 as the manual said. I then took these out and put them in DIMM 2 and 4. Works perfectly now.
Any ideas why - and if so - whether two more sticks in 1 and 3 would cause issues if I was to upgrade??
Should i send this mobo back? Is it faulty? Or maybe I am missing a BIOS update or setting?
Help is greatly appreciated. - I'm not a n00b, just stuck

    Damn MSI's memory slot color-coding! ...
Ok, just so we're all talking about the same thing, when I look at my (Platinum version) manual, on page 2-7, it's titled "Memory" at the top and has images below there showing 3 alternate configurations for memory.  If you look closely at the lables on the right-hand side of the images, the slots are labeled:
    DIMM1  (green, closest to processor)
    DIMM3  (green)
    DIMM2  (orange, closest to processor)
    DIMM4  (orange)
...note that the second one is actually labeled "DIMM3", not DIMM2, as you might expect.  So the manual is in fact telling you to install into DIMM1 & DIMM2 - not DIMM1 & DIMM3.  In other words, in the green slot closest to processor and in the orange slot closest to processor - those are DIMM1 & DIMM2.  So, unlike pretty much every other board manufacture, to run in dual-channel mode, you need to have one stick in a green slot and one stick in an orange slot.  It sounds like you were putting them in the right slots... just calling them the wrong names .
Now that that's cleared up ... can you list the exact part number of your ram?

I don't seem to be hearing anything positive about this motherboard to be fair.
    No offense intended, but:
    a) "To be fair", There's LOTs of positive things being reported from MSI P6N owners... I think we tend to focus in on the negative reports (human nature), or ones that confirm what we suspect to be the case.  I'll grant you that there are some people reporting problems, but that's true about pretty much every board out there.  I may be guilty of the oposite effect, but as far as I can tell, there's actually a lot more positive than negative being reported about these boards, so I'm a little confused that you haven't seen anything positive (?).
    b) Also human nature, people who are generally happy or not having problems tend not to post anything at all.  So you're much more likely to see negative reports to begin with.
...you're actually the second person I've seen report this particular problem (Edge1, who just posted is the other one).  It's pretty puzzling, for sure.  If you can post the model/part number of the memory you're using, maybe we can figure something out.  I think Edge made some progress earlier by bumping the mem voltage up to what the memory was rated for.. have you tried that?

  • 4gb Ram problem with P6N 650i. 2gb work fine

I have been researching this problem for 2 days now in my free time, but I havent made any progress.  First off, here is my system
    MSI 650i P6N SLI
    2gb G. Skill DDR2 800
    2gb Patriot DDR2 800
    two 250gb HDs
    E6300 @ 1.86ghz
    8800GTS 512mb
And here is the problem, I have been running the 2gb of G. SKill Ram for quite some time, perfectly fine, then I bought this Patriot, Gaming ram off a friend.  Running all  4gb, the system takes about 10 minutes to boot up, and is extremely slugish from there.  But running either pair of 2gb on its own works perfectly fine...
I think this is a fairly common problem, and I found all kinds of different fixes, but either they didnt work, or didnt apply to me.  I saw something about upgrading to BIOS version 1.24 for the SLI FI board, but that is a completely different MOBO then mine...  I upgraded to 2.60 BIOS, which is the latest, and it didnt help at all.  So if anyone has any ideas, that would be really great!!
If you need more info too I can give.
I am fairly computer literate too, but this is a pretty tough fix for me to figure out...
    Thanks!!

    Hello,
New here finally found someone with my same problem!!!  My signature has my setup, and I still have a problem getting 4GB of memory to work with my setup.  It is 4 x 1GB modules, and if I put any combination in the channels, the 4GB won't work, and any arrangement of 1-3GB works just fine.   The 4th gig gives me a blue screen while Vista is loading, and it's always a different error code.
I got in touch with Patriot's tech support, who said the voltage to the memory should be increased.  I didn't quite buy that, and haven't tried it yet because I wanted to find a better solution.
EVGA's tech support said to update the BIOS.  Based on this thread, that sounds like the fix, however I am having trouble updating the BIOS.  EVGA's instructions are worthless.  I have the most current BIOS version on a CD ready to boot with, but when I try to boot from the CD, nothing happens.  It looks like I need to flash the CMOS first?  I tried a procedure on a website and it didn't work.  When I get to the screen to flash it, the comp is frozen.  Is there a jumper I need to remove?
I would appreciate some help in this matter.  Thanks!

  • CSS bootup problem

    Hi,
I have one CSS11501 without PCMCIA flash disk, I tried to booted it via network, it can normally boot, but after bootup, there are some error message. After login to CSS, it accept very few command only. The attachment is the screen capture file during CSS bootup. Can you please give me some advise to resolve this problem?
    Best Regards,

    Hi,
What you are seeing is normal without having any type of disk in the CSS. The first error is because the CSS is trying to save the running-config to startup-config which is trying to save to disk which you do not have. The other commands like show run are trying to do another disk operation by showing your config. All in all, this is because youhave no disk in the CSS.
The net boot is a minimum load up and should not be run this way permanently, You really need to get atleast one pcmcia disk for operation.
    Regards
    Pete..

What is causing the problem and how do I bootup ?

    Hello Eric,
issue BREAK (this depends on the terminal emulation used: Tera Term ALT+B, Hyperterm CTRL+BREAK ?) to get to the ok-prompt.
Check the current settings of diag-switch? and boot-device.
<b>printenv</b> (displays all settings) or a certain setting
    <b>printenv diag-switch?
    printenv boot-device
    printenv diag-device
    printenv auto-boot?</b>
If <b>diag-switch? true</b> the system tries to boot from net !
    <b>setenv auto-boot? false </b> disables automatic bootup
When you power-on the system, it's now stops at the ok-prompt.
Are there any disks installed ?
    <b>probe-scsi-all</b>
Try to boot from a Solaris CD and review the disk layout with <b>format</b>.
    <b>setenv diag-switch? false</b> disable diagnostics
    <b>setenv diag-device disk</b>

  • P6N Diamond New Problem: Second HDD Randomly Starts/Stops Since recent Update

    Howdy All,
Continuing problems with the P5N Diamond.
    This one's new.
Previously I had the same problem as many others with the cold boot issue. Somehow, someway, it just stopped: cold boot or not, one day it just started booting fine....go figure.
However, I recently (about 3 weeks ago) did the MSI live update that included something or other pertaining to the E-SATA....support for it or something to that end. Although I don't use the E-SATA, I installed it thinking I might at some point and since installing it, I have discovered a new problem: my second drives (in RAID 0) just opens/closes randomly. It seems to mostly occur when operating demanding programs: gaming, watching a video, that sort of thing.
Everytime it does this, it takes me to desktop and asks me what program I want to use to open the program......which when I do, is nothing more than my second (D drive) HDDs in RAID 0. I then get the yellow pop up message in the bottom toolbar from Windows saying it's experienced a write failure problem. It hasn't done any damage that I can tell and I've lost nothing, but being taken to desktop perpetually is a major issue. This problem is driving me absolutely up the wall. No sooner than I start to do something and wham.....I'm at desktop being asked what program I want to use to open up the second HDDs. I've also tried just leaving it open but to no avail: it just randomly continues to open and close.
I have my O/S on the C drive and 2 more HDDs in RAID O for back up on ports 6 & 7. Since doing the MSI update that included the E-SATA whatever, this new problem almost prevents the computer from being usable: certainly nothing in gaming is possible along with anything that requires uninterruption.
    Here's my system:
    M/B: P6N Diamond
    CPU: E6850
    RAM: Corsair XMS PC-8500, 2 x 1 gig
    HDD: 1- WD 150 Raptor
    HDD: 2- WD 5000AAKS in Raid 0
    Vid Card: EVGA 8800GTX
PSU: PC Power & Cooling 750 Silencer
    ODD: Sony DRU 830A
    FDD: Sony Floppy
    Misc: Scythe fans x 5
    O/S: XP Pro w/ SP2
    Running BIOS 1.2
So, being fairly certain the MSI update created the problem, my question is, how do I undo the MSI's most recent update to remove it? When I go into Add/Remove Programs, nothing is listed there. I'm not sure this is the source of the problem but I do know I didn't have it beforehand.
I'd greatly appreciate any help with this....even any ideas. While I have some computer knowledge, I'm not as tech savvy as most here, but this problem is, apart from driving me up a wall, making the computer almost unusable. FYI, I haven't done a System Restore because I've installed several things since and don't want to lose them if I can isolate the problem, but I will if that's what you all recommend.
Again, sorry for what may be a noobish question, but I'm not sure where else to go. After dealing with MSI's tech support, I'd rather talk to a wall.
    Thanks greatly.
    Pepper1

    Mark,
Forgive me for asking, but I am a bit confused. Is your "cold boot issue" now solved? If so, do you think that the new drives are the key?

    Sorry for late post.
After setting up the HW RAID (2500YS) for booting the system still cold boots.  strangely this time the reset (Ctrl+Alt+Del) doesn't seem to work.  I must of did it two dozen times and it would never clear.  I then just powered off after the other 2 drives on the nvidia SATA cleared and seen the HD LED light up and stay on for a few seconds(seems stuck on the 4723 checks of the drive) and then powered down and powered right back up with no cold boot issue.  It has worked this way every time for the last week or so and I tested it like 20 or so times(3-4 times a day).  These drives are listed as being compatible after the firmware update (and I did that already) so I guess it is either the MB BIOS needs updating or it's the way the nvidia chipset runs this setup is wacky.  This is assuming the 4723 HD compatibility list is correct.
here's a summary of the drives so far.
36GB Raptors (old revision) - can take forever to boot properly and corrupted my disk in 3 days of testing (scrambled my directory structure)
105GB Raptors - Just reset(Ctrl+Alt+Del) 1-4 times after the HD LED goes solid for a few seconds.  worked for two months no errors.
250GB Caviar RE(2500YS) - have to power off (power button) when HD LED goes solid.  so far no problems for a week.
80 GB SATA II Hitachi Deskstar (HDS728080PLA380 - May 2005) - same as 150 GB Raptors, just a reset or four, only did a days worth of testing with no errors.
well, I was hoping for those 2500YS to work properly.  Now it makes it really hard to track the problems with so many different errors and 3 different places it can go wrong 4723/nvidia/msi/HD Manufacturer.  wait, that's 4.  Oh boy!
Hopefully this gets resolved soon.  I've already had to move this MB to my secondary system, and for other reasons than this.  I didn't mind hitting the reset button to get this to run.  I get the feeling that MSI has abandoned this board on us.  with the new P7N being released it will be even harder to get anyone to mess with this thing.

  • P6N SLI V2 problem with "dual core center"

I have the P6N SLI  V2 with E4400 and 7600gt running XP pro sp 2.
after installing and running MSI's "dual core center" (including .Net framework) I only have the "VGA" option enabled, the "MB" option is disabled as well as the D.O.T option. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling as well as downloading the latest version, but I have the same problem. I get no MB options at all (like no cpu temp, fan speed, core speed etc.). I didn't make any changes to the BIOS yet (other than changing the boot sequence), and ideas?

    A great one.
Don't use MSI's utilities. Anyone here will tell you that.

  • Computer has Bootup problems.

My iBook Has a number of problems.
Sometimes the LCD does not turn on, The Computer Randomly Freezes, the hard drive sounds sluggish on bootup sometimes, and the computer sometimes on bootup tells me "INVALID MEMORY ACCESS".
Also the computer no longer has the ablility to connect to a secure network.
I am wondering what is going on with the computer?
Is it the hard drive? Is it the Memory?
I do not want the computer going to die.
    Anybody know anything to help?

iFixit.com has a lot of step by step instructions and now videos for some of the units they take apart. It's worth a shot to look at it. I wouldn't assume the logic board needs replacement just yet, but it is a very likely possibility. Some other things I can think of are:
    re-seat the RAM chips
    re-seat the Airport Card
Reseating the Airport card isn't easy like it was on an iBook G3. You need to open the unit up to access it, but I've seen such problems occur when the Airport is no connected properly. Disassembling a 12" PowerBook, if that's what you're talking about, is probably one of the most difficult jobs you can do. Replacing the DVD on one of them is a 3 hour job for me and I have a fair amount of experience. Replacing an HD for me on one of them takes me about 30 min. For me, replacing the HD on an iBook is about a 20-30 min job.
If by chance this is one of the 1GHz iBooks, there's a good chance that cable to the drive has come unseated, and there's also a good chance the drive's cable connector is separating from the logic board.
If you could get an external firewire enclosure, one idea might be to try and install the OS onto an external drive and see if it boots properly and the symptoms end. That could at least get the internal HD out of the picture and narrow down the scope of your problems.
The reality of it is, there are a lot of things that can go wrong.

  • Z68a-GD65 (Bootup Problems)

I'm currently having problems building the following system in signature.
The problem is that it refuses to bootup. I have tried the system with the following setup:
    1 Sata HDD
1 Mem Module in Dimm slot 1/ 2 modules in slots 1 and 3.
    Inside/Outside the case.
I used two power supplies (OCZ 600W/Seasonic 430W)
When switched on, the CPU phase LED (1) flashes for a second, the cpu fan spins momentarily, and the power light on the motherboard lights up. We have tried reseting the cmos, and the same things continue to happen. No other lights appear on the motherboard.
My brother also managed to drop the CPU on the kitchen floor. There is no damage to it, that I can see, but just wondered if this could cause any problems. I should point out that it fell on its "back", so no damage to the pins.

The CPU does not have pins, it only has the contact pads. The pins are oart of the CPU socket on the board. So I am a bit perplexed that you are mentioning potential pin damage ?
The best at this stage is to see if someone has a 1155 socket CPU that you can test on your board to verify if the CPU was indeed damaged internally from the fall. You could also take the CPU to your local PC store and ask them to test it for you. It is unlikely that it would have been damaged by a fall, but depending on the impact it is not impossible that the silicon wafer inside has shifted ever so slightly and that may be the casue of a short.
    Have it tested first.

  • T60p Bootup problems

    Hi
I have a T60p thinkpad, after the computer updated to XP service pack 3, it will not bootup anymore, I am not able to recover last known boot, have you got any ideas on how to fix the boot problem?
What happens, in Safemode the computer starts to go through the boot and after about 2 pages of booting, the computer just hangs there, and the only way out of that is to reboot, I tested the hard drive it was fine, I tested the memory it was fine,. I also put Windows XP pro and booted of that, and it loads all the windows software into the computer from the CD, and after that it says on the bottom of the blue screen loading Windows and it hangs there. So I am not able to recover or attempt to repair Windows. Thanks.
