P6n 680i raid problem

Hi!
I have always been using RAID and I just got the p6n 680i mainboard from MSI. Before I just entered a raid setup in the boot menu but on this mainboard there is no such thing. Ive been reading the manual a 100times now and cant find out how to raid my new WD raptor X discs. Can anyone tell me how I make a RAID 0 with this mainboard? Thx

  • P6N Hardware raid problems (sata 6,7)

I didn't find the sig things which i find odd but anyway...
    here my rig
    P6n Diamond
    2 asus 8800gts in sli
    i have 4 HDD WD 200 gigs sata2
(will go into detail about those lovely HDDS)
    dvd burning sata (currently unplug)
    dvd rom IDE plug in
    2 gigs of ram 4x512
    core duo 2.66 ghz
OK here the problem i wanted 4 HDDS in raid 0 or raid 1 or the 1+0 since i got 4 ... works GREAT fast machines until something went wrong which blew out my original 4 gigs ram 4x1 gig ram sticks and no matter what ram i put in it did not work...sent it in for RMA got it back ever since i got it back RAID BEEN ACTING UP!!! my raid would FAIL in 1+0(i assume it means stripeing and mirroring) and 0 my desktop would hang for a few moments doing gaming regular uses email internet music video uses OR IDLEING after it recovers i get a balloon saying that access fail er to X.X.M drive it use to be one drive now when one acts up the other three follows it examples that was in raid 0 and 1+0 same issues once in a blue moon wait that everyday when i have it in raid 1+0 i found a brand new harddrive in my computer the raid had degraded ? what that means well i know what but HOW ? how did it degraded? so i rebuild the array and geese what compleat fail er it dies and i loose all my stuff on it...now be for someone comes in such as MSI saying that my HDD may be at fault it not...infact it is currently in raid 0 just 2 of them on my other desktop working great and the BEST PART it is FASTER on the P6N i get 200MB burst and when it was in raid 0 i get like 120 continuous read and in raid 1+0 i believe half that speed or 90mbs in the older desktop i get 330mb BURST and i forgot what i got for continuous ready again probably 90 and it is stable plus i ran forever hour es test on the HDD surface scans errors and such and it in 100% good shape and ready to rock....so you guys know the HDDS were in sata 1-4 sata 5 was my dvd burner and 6-7 blank....so i was using the SOFTWARE raid and it not doing so well at all i did try using 2 drives i didn't do a proper test yet but i think it also failed...so seeing that I'm having allot of software raid problems decided to get from bad to worse i cant get anywhere with it so here the new set up now...
2 hdds ONLY and PHYSICALY installed since the other 2 are in the other computer i have an IDE dvd rom plug  and drive 1 and 4 are plug into the sata 6 and 7 the black and red sata heads...NO BLUE LIGHTS AT ALL NEVER SEEN A BLUE LIGHT... as we know Jp1 and JP2 i think ? there are 4 pins there are 4 possible ways to set that up i tryed all four and no blue lights not even a blink i look close I CANT FIND THE LIGHT PHYSICALLY INSTALLED or i dint recognize it ( i hope i am being blind) what i mean there four ways i tryed jumping one pin from jp1 to jp2 instead of two pins on jp1 and i even put 2 jumpers on both jp1 and 2 and both jumpers the other way from jp1 pin two jp2 pin actually that 6 ways my bad no blue lights...
the BIOS is set to IDE didn't work in raid as i read from other places if things go well light come on and the BIOS sees it as a single drive which means no floppy to installed 3rd party drives AWESOME!!! cant get it working :( .. it not detecting it at all it saying i have NO HDDS installed at all
i sent the board in for a second rma..guess what they did they pulled it out and put it in a box and send it right back to me....the moment it got there i get an email saying it being shiped back and i was like oh nice they replace it...they didn't TOUCH it...so I'm calling them up the next day...to find out why they did that and to try to set up the SIL raid....
now what I'm asking is in case MSI don't help how you guys get yours to work or tell me how to get it working ....and if the HARDWARE raid is a pain then why is my raid failing too much in software raid dose anyone know how to keep the raid alive in software ? i originally wanted software so it supports 4 drives but it failing so I'm dropping it to two drives in the hardware raid and i cant get it to even w/e it is it need to do....any thing will help right now I'm stump i went to this forum spent all day looking through it and tryed some stuff no luck :(
I'm using an ASUS board on my older desktop for 2 years straight more or less it still in raid 0 NO ERRORS it is sata1 that the HDD only maxi um speed with 2 sata1 in raid 0 it acts like 1 sata2 drive and i never had to reinstalled my OS for 2 years and it gets better the ORGINAL motherboard for that old desktop was an MSI and right now that original board is on my self causes a lil device fryed ( don't think it msi fault but got fed up with that board with allot of bugs it was a NEO F or something really old lol....
    awesome a spell checker :D

i dont know how two memory stick whould make a diffrent but to answer your question no i havent the goal is to have all 4 sticks and yes they work great i put them in my old system as well and was able to see incrase of performance even though it two gigs all my other hardwares are working find cause when the mainboard was sent in for repaires i move some parts over so i can play SOME games while i wait...now for the power supply it has MORE then enough power it is a 1200 watt thermaltake with 4 12v rails 2 are 20 amps and the other 2 or 36 amps.. 5v rail is 30 or more but the 12 v rail are acurate i was studding it so i can properly connect the 36 amp to my video cards all power cord are plug in like i said all hardwares are working fine causes they were tested befor and none of them were at faults..
however i will try the memtest86 now dose it need to have an OS installed (dont have it causes it wont see my HDDS in sata 6 and 7) i have to head out in a bit but when i come back ill check it out causes the orginal rams were working find and everythign was happy untill the motherboard blew out and took out 4 ram sticks so i brought a new one from a diffrent brand wich fell into the compatible list of ram for this board the other one was not "comptiable" thank you be back shortly...
i forgot to mention befor i whould like a good list of directions beside the one in my manuel of how to set up the sata 6 and 7 raid if wores come to wores im going to back up my old HDDS wich have been working great and move it over to the HARDWARE raid and see if it works i will post what i find out but in the mean time the proper set up of the raid hardware will be nice in case i did something wrong thank you

  • SATA RAID problem on K8N Neo2 Platinum (nForce3 ultra) & winXP x64

I entered on MSI driver dowload page, put my model, and i found out that the RAID driver for win x64 wasn't released (nforce3 ultra), but in the same page was the driver for the nforce4, so I supposed it was compatible. I made the driver disk. press F6 and he askme for the drivers, ok, i introduce BOTH drivers, he detects perefctly the SATA RAID (stripping) format the disk, copy the files and ask me for some .CATof teh raid driver that wasn't on the zip file.... omit files, reboots, completes the instalation, but on the first boot of win x64 when it's just about to show the windows screen, a bue windows, and resets the pc so fast that's unreadable.  fail safe start.. same crash.
I Installed win on an IDE and it run prefectly... In th other hand... without installing any driver the windows instalation recognices the SATA drives, but not the RAID. Maybe I just got to install the raid driver but not the SATA driver... the nforce3 driver form nvidia.com is pretty old... The real funny is that when i installed winXp x64 BETA i hadn' any problem... (winXP 64 doesn't admit the 32 bit driver=
Which driver i'm supposed to install? to INSTALL winxp64 on a SATA RAID and make it boot from there?
    Thaks a lot

I think the're compatible because if you enter in msi driver download page and select my model, they put the Nforce3 and nforce4 for win64 and my model is only nforce3. The thing is they havent released the nforce3 for WIN 64.... So.. P6N Lots of problems please help
    The setup is the following:
    P4 D935 3.2gHz
    P6N Diamond MS-7320 Bios 1.3V
    Corsair XMS2-6400C4DHX
    NX8600GT-TD512EZ/D2
    Seagate Barracuda 7200 250Gb SataII 16Mb
    Akasa 460W Dual Rail
Please help I have lots and lots of problems with lockups that can happen any time post , bios , loading vista and sometimes during OS. Some times will work ok play games etc. Already tried different combinations fitting the mem modules even tried and some pc4200 modules same problems. Spent lots of hours clocking the mems with different settings but non is stable. I am not interested in overcloking just to make it stable to start with. When is actually running is fine is more than enough for me. Already looked to lots of posts on the msi forum but… Since the cpu is old can I go back on an older bios version???? The Corsair modules have to run at 2.1V or is it possible to use them with slower setting. So confused so lost ….. please HELLPPPPP
    Any help greatly appreciated.

please, don't buy any more unneded parts.  first find the problem then buy if no solutions available.
One thing I find with BIOS issues is to do a full clear.
    1. disconnect the power cord from the power supply(turn switch to off if there is one.
    2. hit the power switch to clear the power out of the system.
    3. set the cmos jumper to clear and leave there if one is available.
    4. Pull the battery.
    5. carefully short out the battery connector on the motherboard to drain any power left.
    6. press the clear cmos button and hold for 30sec minimum, if you didn't have a jumper to set.
    7. replace battery, move jumper back, plug in power cord, turn on power sipply switch.
Now it should hopefully power up.  go into BIOS and load optimized results. hit save and exit and when it gets back to the post screen, go back into bios and set your normal MB settings(ie. set boot devices, boot order, disable sound if using sound card, etc...)
go into your H/W Monitor section and list the CPU Vcore settings to make sure it is getting the power it needs.  I just looked it up and it's suppose to run from 1.225v - 1.325v.
also, try your most generic ram you have with auto settings.  the faster the ram usually the more volts they need and default volts are 1.8v for ram and sometimes faster chips have issues with lower volts.
Let me know how this works for you.
    -=Mark=-
ps. make sure everything is unplugged from the computer you don't need.  just cpu, 1 stick of ram, and video. and of course keyboad and mouse.  Please make a signature with all your systems specs including make and model numbers.  I hate guessing at solutions and I'd hate to see you buy any more unneccessary parts because of lack of information.

  • NEO4 Plat Sli SIL3231 Raid problem - Can't boot after BIOS Flash!

Hi, I have and Neo4 Platinum SLI. I had "the problem" a while back with the nVida raid where there was a hang on shutdown. I then created a RAID0 using my two Rators on the SIL3132 controller, and have three hitachi drives hooked up to SATA1 - SATA3. Back then, I had trouble getting my SIL3132 array to be the main boot volume. I could boot when no other drives were attached, but as soon as I attached them, I get the boot disk error after post. Somehow I got it to work, but not think this time, I flashed the BIOS and ran into the same problems, as the BIOS got reset.
First, I went in and re-enabled RAID on the sil3132 controller, and change the boot order to have the RAID voluime be the first boot device, and my other drivers be the next on down the line. Upon rebooting, my system hangs after verifying DMI pool at a blanksscreen for 5 - 10 minutes then gives my the "missing HAL.dll error". if I go back into the BIOS and disable SATA1/SATA2 and SATA3/SATA4 my computer boots just fine. I even completley disconnected my three drives an my system boots just fine. I have searched these forums and could not find anything close to my issue and wondered if it is something I am just missing in the setup. I will say that at POST my IDE devices has always read:
    IDE Primary Master [None]
    IDE Secondary Master [None]
IDE Primary Slave (my first DVD/R drive)
IDE Secondary Slave (My second DVD/R drive)
IDE Third Master (a 250gb drive)
IDE Fourth Master (a 250gb drive)
IDE Fifth Master (a 250gb drive)
    IDE Sixth Master [None]
Is this normal? all my hard drives are SATA. the raptors and three SATAII drives.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Since the Nvida raid problem seems to have been fixed (as far as I read) I would like to go back to using the nVidia raid controller. I just need to back up my system first!
    Thanks in advance.

    Jkmet,
I have noted the same problem, with a USB Pen drive.
If I leave it plugged in and shut down, the next time I cold boot it tries to boot for the pen drive.  What I found out the any time you add a drive before booting the BIOS places it at the top of the Hard Drive Priority list making it the boot drive.  Same thing happens when I plug in a new SATA and does not mater where it is connected.  So, what I have to do any time you add a drive with the power off you have to boot to BIOS reset the Hard drive priority list, then save, exit and reboot to boot from you windows drive.
I am sure this is a BIOS Bug, but MSI states that the way it should would work.
    Roger

  • K9A2 CF cold boot and RAID problem

    Hi,
I am struggling with my mobo regarding recent cold boot issues and the problem to set up RAID on the SB600 chipset.
    Here's my rig's description:
MSI K9A2 CF rev 2 (I believe because of the red heatsink) with the latest available bios flashed using the forum's tool.
Phenom 9850 BE (stock, never OCed) cooled down with Asetek closed-circuit watercooling.
    2x Radeon 4850 1 Gb crossfire
4 Gigs of RAM (Nandya Technology)
HDD WD velociraptor 150 go, WD black caviar 640 go, 2x WD 1 To green caviar all drives are SATA-2
1 PCI SiI 3512 sata controller for the sata ODD drives (DVD + DVD burner)
    PSU is advent 750 W
OS: Vista 64 bits home premium working with AHCI drivers
So here is the deal: the system has been running fine for about a year.
I recently bought two 1 To HDD to set up a RAID 1 for backup purpose. The goal is to run the velociraptor as system disk (which it is currently) in raid 0+1 jobd (say standalone), the WD 640 go as data disk raid 0+1 jobd (say standalone) and the two 1To as raid one array from the SB600 onboard controller.
So I flashed the bios to make sure I would have the latest raid rom. The flash was performed with the forum's flasher without a problem, followed by a load defaults and a clear CMOS to be on the safe side.
Since then, I have random cold boot problems. I fire it up, all leds and drives are on, but no post and nothing on screen, not to mention no beeps whatsoever. I already checked the connections, mobo condensators... everything looks ok. The system was bought pre-built and was working flawlessly beforehand. I need to power it off manually and restart it once to a few times and then it post and boots to the OS without a problem.
Is there any specific option I should look for in the bios to change that? I assume I might have made a wrong configuration at some point.
Concerning the RAID problem I cannot access the SB600 onboard Fastbuild utility as long as the PCI sata controller is plugged in --> I get the "Not enough space to load PCI rom" error message. Without the PCI card I can access Fastbuild and define arrays without a glitch. But if I disconnect the card, I no longer have optical drives
Does anyone have a clue how to use the SB600 in raid mode along with a PCI sata controller?
Also, when RAID is setup, arrays defined and all HDDs recognized by the bios, is there a way to make Vista load the raid driver without reinstalling from scratch? For now I can use SATA drives in AHCI mode but get a BSOD whenever I try booting from RAID.
I know that's a lot of questions but I could really use some help. I have been roaming the web and could not find anything.
Thanks in advance for your insight.
    Cheers

This is common problem with boot-roms, the BIOS can't handle multiple of them, only 1 if you use raid.
So disable the PCI-Sata bootrom or disable the RAID.
This is a BIOS limitation, nothing you can do about it.
AHCI is a type of RAID also.
What you see is normal, the BIOS doesn't have enough hooks to put a Boot-rom in, and exspecially the RAID MUST need one to function.
Other solution is to use Windows software raid and put the RAID controller in normal-mode.
You won't notice the speed difference anyway as the onboard is a soft-raid as well, but then done in the BIOS, however in both cases it's the CPU that must handle them.

  • Raid problem on Neo2 Platinum

Have just bougtht a Neo2 Platinum.
Have also bought 2 x WD 80 Gb SATA HD, because I want to run Raid 0
In the bios I enable Raid on both chanel 1, 2, 3 and 4 and in the Bios it detects the hd. But when I leave the bios and push F10 to go into the Raid configurations it detects the drivers, but freezes up and I can do nothing. It shovs Mirrored in the menu, and the 2 hd in the "add" colum.
    Any input would be appriciatet.
    Thanks!!

  • P6N Platinum Raid 1 Problem

Doing a new build with P6n Sli Platinum 650i and Vista Ultimate. Raid 1  is set up in bios but when I try to load Vista it only sees one drive.Have two WD 10,000rpm Drives on sata 1 and 2.Loaded Nvidia divers after Os and Nvidia software says that drives are mirroring and healthybut Vista is only using and seeing one drive.Have tried to reinstall os but same thing.Tried loading drivers during Os install but Vista only saw one drive and would not except drivers.Any suggestions?

Firstly, do you know what RAID-1 does? It is mirroring both drives, that means both drives' data are exactly the same at all time. In OS, you can only see 1 visible drive for you to access. That is expected.

  • P6N Diamond New Problem: Second HDD Randomly Starts/Stops Since recent Update

    Howdy All,
Continuing problems with the P5N Diamond.
    This one's new.
Previously I had the same problem as many others with the cold boot issue. Somehow, someway, it just stopped: cold boot or not, one day it just started booting fine....go figure.
However, I recently (about 3 weeks ago) did the MSI live update that included something or other pertaining to the E-SATA....support for it or something to that end. Although I don't use the E-SATA, I installed it thinking I might at some point and since installing it, I have discovered a new problem: my second drives (in RAID 0) just opens/closes randomly. It seems to mostly occur when operating demanding programs: gaming, watching a video, that sort of thing.
Everytime it does this, it takes me to desktop and asks me what program I want to use to open the program......which when I do, is nothing more than my second (D drive) HDDs in RAID 0. I then get the yellow pop up message in the bottom toolbar from Windows saying it's experienced a write failure problem. It hasn't done any damage that I can tell and I've lost nothing, but being taken to desktop perpetually is a major issue. This problem is driving me absolutely up the wall. No sooner than I start to do something and wham.....I'm at desktop being asked what program I want to use to open up the second HDDs. I've also tried just leaving it open but to no avail: it just randomly continues to open and close.
I have my O/S on the C drive and 2 more HDDs in RAID O for back up on ports 6 & 7. Since doing the MSI update that included the E-SATA whatever, this new problem almost prevents the computer from being usable: certainly nothing in gaming is possible along with anything that requires uninterruption.
    Here's my system:
    M/B: P6N Diamond
    CPU: E6850
    RAM: Corsair XMS PC-8500, 2 x 1 gig
    HDD: 1- WD 150 Raptor
    HDD: 2- WD 5000AAKS in Raid 0
    Vid Card: EVGA 8800GTX
PSU: PC Power & Cooling 750 Silencer
    ODD: Sony DRU 830A
    FDD: Sony Floppy
    Misc: Scythe fans x 5
    O/S: XP Pro w/ SP2
    Running BIOS 1.2
So, being fairly certain the MSI update created the problem, my question is, how do I undo the MSI's most recent update to remove it? When I go into Add/Remove Programs, nothing is listed there. I'm not sure this is the source of the problem but I do know I didn't have it beforehand.
I'd greatly appreciate any help with this....even any ideas. While I have some computer knowledge, I'm not as tech savvy as most here, but this problem is, apart from driving me up a wall, making the computer almost unusable. FYI, I haven't done a System Restore because I've installed several things since and don't want to lose them if I can isolate the problem, but I will if that's what you all recommend.
Again, sorry for what may be a noobish question, but I'm not sure where else to go. After dealing with MSI's tech support, I'd rather talk to a wall.
    Thanks greatly.

    Mark,
Forgive me for asking, but I am a bit confused. Is your "cold boot issue" now solved? If so, do you think that the new drives are the key?

    Sorry for late post.
After setting up the HW RAID (2500YS) for booting the system still cold boots.  strangely this time the reset (Ctrl+Alt+Del) doesn't seem to work.  I must of did it two dozen times and it would never clear.  I then just powered off after the other 2 drives on the nvidia SATA cleared and seen the HD LED light up and stay on for a few seconds(seems stuck on the 4723 checks of the drive) and then powered down and powered right back up with no cold boot issue.  It has worked this way every time for the last week or so and I tested it like 20 or so times(3-4 times a day).  These drives are listed as being compatible after the firmware update (and I did that already) so I guess it is either the MB BIOS needs updating or it's the way the nvidia chipset runs this setup is wacky.  This is assuming the 4723 HD compatibility list is correct.
here's a summary of the drives so far.
36GB Raptors (old revision) - can take forever to boot properly and corrupted my disk in 3 days of testing (scrambled my directory structure)
105GB Raptors - Just reset(Ctrl+Alt+Del) 1-4 times after the HD LED goes solid for a few seconds.  worked for two months no errors.
250GB Caviar RE(2500YS) - have to power off (power button) when HD LED goes solid.  so far no problems for a week.
80 GB SATA II Hitachi Deskstar (HDS728080PLA380 - May 2005) - same as 150 GB Raptors, just a reset or four, only did a days worth of testing with no errors.
well, I was hoping for those 2500YS to work properly.  Now it makes it really hard to track the problems with so many different errors and 3 different places it can go wrong 4723/nvidia/msi/HD Manufacturer.  wait, that's 4.  Oh boy!
Hopefully this gets resolved soon.  I've already had to move this MB to my secondary system, and for other reasons than this.  I didn't mind hitting the reset button to get this to run.  I get the feeling that MSI has abandoned this board on us.  with the new P7N being released it will be even harder to get anyone to mess with this thing.

  • P6N Diamond: RAID ISSUES!

    Hi,
I recent purchased a P6N Diamond, no matter what i do (and yes the bios has been updated), when i enable the RAID on either the ports 1-5 or the mirror on 6 & 7, the motherboard comes up wit an error for each raid device saying "no enough memory to copy PCI option ROM", besides the obvious gramatical & spelling errors through out the BIOS and Manual hehe... this problem is really annoying me.
    Heres some more info
    1.Product Type: P6N Diamond
    2.BIOS version: 1.2
    3.External VGA Type: 7800GTX, 8600GS, 8600GS, 8600GS (4 video cards running 7 monitors)
4.CPU Type: Intel Quad Core 6600
5.Memory Type: 4x1G G.Skill (Dual Channel Mode, 2x2 Matched pairs)
    6.Power Supply Type: 950w Thermaltake
    7.Operating System: XP PRO
    8.Problem Description: RAID ISSUE
Every time i enable raid in the bios, it says
'no enough memory to copy PCI Option ROM'
I require all the onboard LAN/Sound etc
and i also have 1xPCI IDE controller and 1xPCI raid controller for extra HDD space.
    Please help

The cause of the problem is that in order to be PC Compatible, the Option Rom space is limited to 128K.  This is true for any motherboard with PC compatible BIOS.
In the common configurations, a newer AGP card (such as a Geforce 4) will require 64K of option ROM space, so you have only 64K of option ROM space left to work with. Many SCSI, NIC with PXE, IDE RAID etc. can easily use another 40-64K of option ROM space.
By design the option ROM should shrink down to a smaller run time code after the initialization code has run. For example, some Adaptec cards will require 32K to initialize. Then they shrink down to 12K at run time; whereas some Geforce 4 cards require 64K to initialize and never release it.  Please check with the device manufacturer for the latest firmware upgrade or ask if they have a smaller option ROM available. Again, this is a limitation of the PC compatible specifications and not a failure of the motherboard BIOS.
So it's the four video cards causing the problem.

  • P6N Platinum: audio problem! [SOOOOLVED! YES!]

    Hello.
I've recently got a P6N Platinum, Q6600, 4GB Corsair 800MHz DDR2 and a GT8800. I started out with XP64, but for various reasons I'm switching to good ol' XP32 now. Formatted and installed it today. Everything worked smoothly in XP64, but now that I've installed XP32 the audio won't work. I've tried all sorts of different versions of the Realtek HD Audio drivers, but nothing seems to work. I read somewhere that some guy had success installing (in this exact order, with reboots inbetween) the Chipset driver, S-ATA raider driver then the Audio driver straight from the original MSI CD that came with the MB, so I even formatted again, reinstalled XP32 and tried installing the drivers in this order with reboots between each one; nothing. What worries me is that nothing even shows up in Device Manager, the only thing I got there with a "question mark" is a PCI Device. I have no idea what device this is though since the only "PCI Device" I got connected is my PCI-E graphic card which already has drivers. I've tried the CNet drivers from the "Popular Issues and Solutions" thread too, didn't work at all. I've tried pretty much everything I can think of, nothing. Even tried forcefeeding a new device through Add Hardware.. then using the Realtek drivers, but I got "Device can't start". BIOS is reset, tried both Default Settings and Optimized Defaults. Tried disabling and re-enabling the HD Audio Controller in BIOS Intergrated Peripherals. Any suggestions would be LOVED, because this is getting frustrating.
Edit: Could also be worth nothing I am using XP SP3, and I got no Microsoft HD Audio-driver under my Sound devices in Device Manager.
    Thanks in advance.

OH MY GOD, I finally found out what the hell was up. The PCI Device that was showing up yellow was the actual Windows HD Audio thing. Or, the "UUA Fix". I think what happens is that this won't install properly on XP SP3, so I somehow, somewhere, found a UAA fix for SP3, did a "Reinstall drivers" on the PCI Device and picked the path for it and suddenly the Realtek drivers just popped right into track without any problems. Instantly.

Try this if you are having problems installing any HD Audio drivers in XP SP3. Woho.

  • MSI KT3 ultra aru Western Digital 200GB raid problem

    Hi!
    This is what I've got.
    KT3 Ultra-ARU (MS-6380E)
    AMD 2000+
256 MB 333mhz RAM (AMD Compatible)
Seagate ST330630A 30GB (an old drive)
    Maxtor 6L080J4 80GB
    Maxtor DiamondMax Plus9 6Y080L0 80Gb 7200rpm 2Mb UDMA133 Fluid IDE
Western Digital Caviar WD1800JB 180Gb 7200rpm Special Edition UDMA100 IDE
Western Digital Caviar WD2000JB 200Gb 7200rpm Special Edition UDMA100 IDE
    Promise 100 IDE-controller
    Creative Geforce MX 440
    Lite-on LTR-40125W
    NEC ND-1300 DVD
    And the configuration:
    IDE1: Seagate (Master)
    IDE2: WD1800BG (Cabel Select)
IDE3(Raid1): Maxtor 6LO80J4 (Master) and Maxtor 6Y080L0 (Slave) raided as an single drive
    IDE4(Raid2): WD2000JB (Cable Select)
    IDE5(IDE-controller1):
    IDE6(IDE-controller2): NEC ND-1300 (Master) and Lite-on LTR-40125W (Slave)
    And the Software:
I've updated all the software drivers so I've got the newest and I'm currently runnign Win2k SP3 with almost every patch installed on it.
    And finally the problem:
When I've hook my WD2000JB to the on-board raid everything seems to be working normaly. The bios finds the drive and makes a new array. Win2k boots up and finds the drive and I can create an partition. But when I've try to format it it the computer starts to freeze for a while and then acts like normal again. The HDD-led blinks as it should during the "normal" time, but when the comp. freezes it stops blinking. The formatation stops at 7% and the HDD-led stops lighting. I don't get an error eventhough it was several hours since it stoped. And the formatation takes like 30min for 1%.
When I connect the WD2000JB to the IDE3 I can format it and it acts just like normal. I even did a full system test with the System tool found on Western Digitals support site and it didn't find any errors. But when move it to the raid-IDE the errors return. I've get Error reading / writing to disk and when I've did a chkdsk I've got the "Coudn't use Device) so I did a scandisk and it found very very many errors so it completly ereased everything that was on it.
And when I've run Western Digitals program again i've get an error (Disk error read/writing) error code: 0113.
Can it be that the Western Disk doesn't work well with Raid? I've haven't heard anything about that, so...
    Best regars,
    Mathias

RAM: Micron DDR 266MHz (2x256MB DIMMs)
    Sound: Avance AC'97 Audio
I've had similar problems where my system becomes very unstable at higher bus speeds. Installing Windows XP simply didn't work very good. However, I have ordered a new PSU today as a solution to this problem. Basically, CPUs and video cards are much more demanding and the more devices you have in your computer the more power you're going to need. I recommend purchasing the Enermax EG465P-VE (FCA) 450W ATX PS. It has a higher amperage rating and will most likely solve your problem.
Check your PSU and your bus speed settings...

  • MSI 865 PE NEO 2 (MS-6728 v.1) raid problems

Hello guys, hope somebody can help before i throw everything out of the window.
Hi had this mobo since 2003.
    p4 2.66  800 fsb
    memory pc 2700  333mhz
    Ati radeon 256 mb
2 ide hds 120gb each on onboard promise as raid optimized for performance (raid0)
Everything start about a month ago.
suddenly Pc dont boot from array.( i think was a power cut)
after playing a bit around I went to fast build (ctrl -f ) delete the array and with option 1 auto detect the array again.
Pc booted and everything was fine, then messages like " windows no disk error" start to pop up everytime i boot up again.
I taught about malaware of some kind and even try to reassign a letter for hds that always appeared as "C".
then very frustrated I had the "brilliant" idea of using window restore point to restore windows some time before  I had this problem.
Then no more boot guys the man lost control of the machine.
i tried to use recovery consolle, when i go "chkdsk" says: disk appear to have 1 or more unrecoverable errrors.
MAP do  not shows the disks (maybe `cause raid?).
the funny thing is that on fastbuild (ctrl-f) a bootable array is present and "Functional",but when i do option 1 (array autoset up) says "no available disks".
I have tried to reinstall Promise pdc20378 driver(cannot find original floppy anymore so i have download driver) to reinstall windows XP(SP2),pressed F6 and then s messages says unexpected error on line bla bla bla.
It does not allow me to install a fresh copy of xp.
Do you think is the promise raid controller fault?
do I need to change/reinstall the driver(maybe i have downloaded the wrong 1).
There is not very important stuff on hds, just years of downloaded movies and songs, which i would like to keep if poss.
Any suggestions before I throw this superb mobo of the 2003 and get the new p35 chipset?
Is the machine finally beat the man?
I thank you all in advance
    A sleepless man

    Thanks HenryW,
I have create the dikette and done the test.
It did not recognize the disks on the onboard promise ata raid.....so i plug them on the normal ide
I ve done quick scan first and 1 of the disk came up with error 0x73 (defective device ..excessive shock),
then i ve performed advanced scan on the same disk and gave me a different error code 0x72 defective device ..S.M.A.R.T failure.
I guess 1 of the disk has gone, unless i can repair it somehow with this utilities,or disks have to be read 2gether on the raid controller..
Well i ll try to see on hitachi website, any more suggestions please let me know.
I thank you for the great help you are giving

  • Re: Qosmio G30 - RAID Problems on OS Installation

I've had my Qosmio G30-161 for half a year, and thought it'd ought to be time to reinstall the whole thing, so i could get rid of stuff i didn't need (Programs, Viruses and non-interesting video clips).
So i took my XP MCE Cd and tried to install, and i got guided through and come to the place where i needed to choose between 1st Unknown, 2nd Stripping, and 3rd Mirroring. I choose the stripping as i wished my harddrives to be in one. Then when i pressed "next" it gave me the error message "1005 - HDD not ready?"
I've tried going into the BIOS and chaneg the setting to different settings that Toshiba told me to, but it also warned me that if i changed the settings my OS would have to be reinstalled. No problem there. But i still get the same error message "HDD not ready?". So now i have to use another computer than my own to check the forums and mail etc.
Anyone know what i should do? I'll be glad with anything as long as i can have both my harddrives (60GB+60GB), and a working OS. :)
Please help, I'm urging for it, since the computer is the one i use for my school work. Feel free to ask questions about system stuff. If you have an answer, please let it be simple, since i realy don't wanna mess up again ^_^

Please check the details in user manual about the RAID installation.
Usually if you are using the clean Windows XP disk then you will have to include the RAID drivers firstly.
Without preinstalled RAID drivers the HDD will be not recognized and you will be not able to install the OS!

  • Mac Pro small business server; RAID problems

Our company runs on a small network consisting of 8 workstations (iMac's) and 1 dedicated server: a 1,5 year old Mac Pro running OS X Snow Leopard Server. This machine has 2 hard drives of 1TB each, running in a mirrored RAID configuration. This configuration holds the OS X system and the data. Because the hardware RAID was so expensive, I chose the software RAID controller OS X offers instead.
All this ran fine for the first 1,5 years, until yesterday... I ran an OS X update and the Mac Pro needed to restart after that. After the machine rebooted, I got a gray screen with the blinking folder-with-questionmark icon telling me no bootable drive could be found. I tried booting from the install DVD and that worked, but after I started DiskUtility to check the hard drive for errors the computer did not find any hard drives, only the DVD. Luckily I made a backup (clone) to an external Firewire drive just before the update and at this moment the server is running from this backup, so no harm done.
How can I solve this problem? Why can't my Mac Pro find it's drives? Is it possible to circumvent the RAID software and boot from one of the two disks or are they formatted in a special way?
My second question is on how to prevent this in the future. I still think the Mac Pro RAID controller is way too expensive, but I read that it's not that smart to use (software) RAID as a bootable drive (of a server). Because of this, I am looking at external options, like the SmartStor NSx600 Series through Firewire. Could this be a better way to go then the software RAID OS X offers or does this external solution have other disadvantages? (speed? reliability?)
Thanks in advance for your input!
