P6N Diamond: CPU power connector(s)

My PSU is a PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750W.  It has what appears to be both an 8-pin and a 4-pin CPU connector.  The motherboard manual shows an 8-slot connector, but it came with a plastic tab on it which blocked 4 of the 8 slots.  Neither manual (MB or PSU - the latter simply a fold-out piece of paper...) says anything about the apparent discrepancy.  The tab on the MB is easily removed, which I did and connected the 8-pin PSU connector.  I'll be running a E6850 CPU and two BFG 8800 GTS video cards.  Can anyone shed some light on why there was this plastic tab over four of the slots?  Should I be using the 8-pin connector, or the 4-pin.  In all my previous builds, I've never had a choice.  I'd rather not power up only to find I've made a mistake and fried everything.
TIA,
drachenfire

Modular PSUs may look nice and "improve" cable management, but they also introduce more points of resistance.
There also known to be unstable on the power rails, And can cause premature failures in system components due to it...
Dont bother, a zip tie is way better in the end!

  • P6N Diamond processor power connector question...

Howdy, I was looking at this review (http://www.xsreviews.co.uk/reviews/motherboards/msi-p6n-diamond/3/) and noticed it said I need an 8-pin power connector for the processor, however, my motherboard had the 8-pin setup but 4 sockets are covered with plastic piece...  Do I need to remove this piece (picture below) or not.
I do not remember the manual saying anything about it and I was actually looking for that at one time.  Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks,

I somewhat have a stable system.  Occasionally when I turn on the computer from off, it will say overclocking failed, however, I am not over clocking.  I don't know if 4-pin power is causing this or I need to tweak the BIOS a little more.
Would you suggest the 8-pin for overclocking?  I have a PSU that has the 8-pin (two 4-pin connectors snapped together), so the option is there.  And we've established that running either 4-pin or 8-pin will not "hurt" anything, right?
I have also read, while searching the Internet, where someone said that 8-pin is really only required when running a quad-core processor.  Is there any truth in this?
    thanks!

  • Computer won't power up if the 2x2 CPU POWER connector is plugged in

Yesterday I assembled this computer and it was working great. Played games on it and everything.
    MSI K9a2 CF, ATHLON 5000+, LC POWER 550W, RADEON 3850 256MB, 2x1G SUPER TALENT 800MHZ RAM.
3 hours ago I went to the store and left 2x PRIME95 torture test running just to check for stability. After  2hours I got home only to find out the the computer has been shut down but the KEYBOARD still had a light on the NUMLOCK led.
So then I unplugged the PSU from power and started up again. But the PC only started for half a second and then the power went off.
So I pulled everything out of the board only to find out that if the CPU POWER 2x2 connector is in the board then it will not power up. Then I also took out the cpu and try to power up without the CPU and  with the CPU POWER 2x2 connector in and it also doesn't power up.
    Conclusion:
If the 2x2 CPU power connector is in the MB regardless if the CPU is in or not then the computer will not power on. But if the 2x2 CPU power connector is absent then the computer powers up. But that don't do me any good since without that connector the CPU can't function.
I also tried hooking it up to another PSU but it does no good. The MB, CPU, GPU, RAM, HDDS are only 2days old.
Also it couldn't have overheated since the temperatures never went higher than 50C during full load thx to Scythe Ninja Revision B cooler and also there is no smell or any indication that something could be burned. The temps were checked with BIOS as with MSI probe.
My question is is the MB the problem?? So I would know which part to send back for warranty

Do you use system stock parameters?(No OC)
    Check CPU cooling system.
List PSU details(Look over PSU sticker for them)
Everything was at stock speed there was even no tweaking involved.
CPU cooling system was working great. Under load the max temperatures it had gotten was 50C. And also the CASE was opened so there was no chance of overheating. And also when I started PRIME95 I opened the window and closed the radiators which means the room temperature was about 15C celsium only.

  • 2nd 8-pin CPU power connector on Big Bang XPower

I am currently using both 8-pin CPU power connectors and am wondering if it is really necessary with my current overclock.  For all the BB XPower owners let me know your thoughts on this.

When doing early tests with the BB Xpwr, I only had a single 8 pin CPU connector ( PSU was single +12V Rail). Since it was not necessary but recommended, I purchase an 8 pin Y cord manufactured by Athena. It worked perfectly until I got a newer double cabled 8 pin PSU (Single +12V rail Corsair AX1200). I also supply power to the boards 6 Pin JPWR4. As Jack says, if the PSU has the connectors (or use the Athena), fill 'em up with power!

  • 12 V CPU power connector

I just bought the K7N2 Delta-ILSR motherboard to replace my old ASUS one, and I found one problem. This new motherboard has a connector that just says:
    ATX 12V Power Connector: JPW1
This 12V power connector is used to provide power to the CPU.
Now, my power supply does not have anything I can fit in that connector, is there any solution that does not involve buying a new one?
    Thanks!

    Hi all
i just hooked up my 12v power connecter(little square plug next to main power plug) and all seems ok so far but i was wondering as you said jmbook1 some people have had problems hooking it up and i just wonder'd what type of probs can occur in doing this.??
my rails are on thread called dvd playback probs but were taken before hooking this connecter up so they may differ now?not sure will check later.

If your PSU has a proper plug you should use all 8 pins of the connector.

The other 4 pins were covered to avoid confusion with PSUs that do not have an 8 pin-plug.

The main idea to double the number of pins is to enhance "current carrying capacity" and therefore stability and safety.

  • K8n diamond plus power connector confusion

    hi!
I have bought a k8n diamond plus motherboard. on the mother board there is an additional 4pin molex power connector JPWR3 that is meant to power up the graphics card. My graphics card (sapphire radeon x850xt platinum edition) already has its own 6pin pcie power connector.
Should i connect both the JPWR3 and the 6pin pcie graphic card power connector to ensure system stability since my PSU has all the required connectors (silverstone st60f 600W) or just either one of the connectors?  ???
    thanks

i was wondering the same. think right direction is both to be connected. from where will draw power dosnt importnant from mobo or from vga conector. maybe if VGA has own power connector that will be drawn 1st, or maybe in reversed way, or maybe both. or maybe connection from mobo is only used when need or when is using SLI. doenst matter inportant is to be VGA(s) to be porewed up enought. think both should be connected is the right way to operate normal. but i agree there should be little light about that in manual to eplained, maybe MSI will release next revsion of manual which will be there.

  • Z97 Mpower CPU power connector

Hi I have a Z97 MPOWER with an 8-pin and a 4-pin CPU connector.  My PSU only has a 4+4 pin.  Is it one or the other or both?  Do you use the 8-pin or the 4-pin, or is it recommended to use both?  If both, which PSU do you recommend and can you use the 8-pin PCI-E for the 8-pin and 4 of the 4+4 only?  Thanks.

Use the 8pin (4+4), the 4pin is for extra power if you OC to extreme.

  • X48C with Core 2 Quad CPU - power connector for fan

New at this. First build. So please treat me gently.
The CPU fan's power selector is clearly marked on the X48C (3 pins). The CPU fan's power lead is obvious (4 pins).
What would you gurus recommend I do?

You are so right. I was trying to plug it into the sys fan. Newbie error. Many thanks for the gentle nudge in the right direction.

  • P6N Diamond CPU voltage fluctuations

Lately my CPU voltage has been acting up overclocked or not, sometimes voltage has been ok by restarting system but now will not and system crashes running smp program.
CMOS has been reset multiple times and voltages are fine from power supply.
The thing i am not sure of and maybe someone has some input here, Im still running the first shipped bios 1.0 and my processor is a GO Q6600 and im not sure if that series processor is supported though i know the older series Q6600 is supported and am wondering if that could be causing the problem though sometimes in the past everything has been ok but i have never flashed a bios before because it has not been needed.
Any input would be helpfull so i can get the smp running again.
Hope the board is not going out anyways, im not sure if it is still in the warranty period or not.

I'm sure you've allready looked but by the CPU support list you should have 1.2 BIOS for the G0. B3 shows 1.1. You've had off & on problems with folding all along on that rig haven't you? Perhaps you should flash 1.2.
The list has been updated and no longer shows version 1.0 at all.
    No problem just started recently.

Try setting 1.36250V or higher.  I think you should try another PSU too.
I wouldn't recommend a BIOS flash in an unstable state.
Power supply voltages are rock stable but i may give it a shot i have an old 375 watt unit i can plug into the board to test and keep the Silverstone running all other stuff.
Processor has run stable @ 1.28 volts before problems started but i will raise voltage more just to see what happens.

  • P6N Diamond, CPU Multipliers, 6x is sproradic?

    Hello,
Have a strange situation with my E6750.  I understand that only the Extreme CPUs have unlocked multipliers, but how about the run of the mill CPUs?   I have had my 6750 running at 6x450, 2700mhz, and I have a CPU-z shot to prove it. Weird thing is, during boot and in system information..it shows 8x450. 3616mhz..??  Stranger still..if I reset Cmos, I cant regularly boot at the 6x multiplier, sometimes it does, most of the time it doesnt.  Is this just a fluky bios thing..or just flukey to get it to run 6x?  If anyone knows how to definitely enable the 6x multiplier, let me know the correct procedure.  (I'm thinking about mounting a Cmos reset button on the desktop to speed things up:))
    Thanks in advance..
Oh yes..speedstep is disabled in CPU settings.

    3.  I disabled the on-board XFi because none of the x64 or x32 bit software would work with it.  Tried updating the software on Creative's site and each setup program said "no compatiable hardware detected."  I did have sound though and it *seemed* OK but I was a bit freaked out by none of the software working.
Use drivers from MSI CD, then update to the ones from the site here.

    5.  If I unlink the settings in the Cell BIOS menu and set the memory speed to 1067 Mhz (which the memory is rated to) and leave all other settings along I get Video adapter problems ("GPU recovered from a fault") and occasionally RAID failures.  Updated to Microsoft's latest RAID driver from Windows Update and that seems to have stopped but still get weird GPU failures with memory running at rated speed.
Did you set timings and voltage to what Corsair specs state? Should be a sticker on DIMM to tell you all that.

  • P6N Diamond New Problem: Second HDD Randomly Starts/Stops Since recent Update

    Howdy All,
Continuing problems with the P5N Diamond.
    This one's new.
Previously I had the same problem as many others with the cold boot issue. Somehow, someway, it just stopped: cold boot or not, one day it just started booting fine....go figure.
However, I recently (about 3 weeks ago) did the MSI live update that included something or other pertaining to the E-SATA....support for it or something to that end. Although I don't use the E-SATA, I installed it thinking I might at some point and since installing it, I have discovered a new problem: my second drives (in RAID 0) just opens/closes randomly. It seems to mostly occur when operating demanding programs: gaming, watching a video, that sort of thing.
Everytime it does this, it takes me to desktop and asks me what program I want to use to open the program......which when I do, is nothing more than my second (D drive) HDDs in RAID 0. I then get the yellow pop up message in the bottom toolbar from Windows saying it's experienced a write failure problem. It hasn't done any damage that I can tell and I've lost nothing, but being taken to desktop perpetually is a major issue. This problem is driving me absolutely up the wall. No sooner than I start to do something and wham.....I'm at desktop being asked what program I want to use to open up the second HDDs. I've also tried just leaving it open but to no avail: it just randomly continues to open and close.
I have my O/S on the C drive and 2 more HDDs in RAID O for back up on ports 6 & 7. Since doing the MSI update that included the E-SATA whatever, this new problem almost prevents the computer from being usable: certainly nothing in gaming is possible along with anything that requires uninterruption.
    Here's my system:
    M/B: P6N Diamond
    CPU: E6850
    RAM: Corsair XMS PC-8500, 2 x 1 gig
    HDD: 1- WD 150 Raptor
    HDD: 2- WD 5000AAKS in Raid 0
    Vid Card: EVGA 8800GTX
PSU: PC Power & Cooling 750 Silencer
    ODD: Sony DRU 830A
    FDD: Sony Floppy
    Misc: Scythe fans x 5
    O/S: XP Pro w/ SP2
    Running BIOS 1.2
So, being fairly certain the MSI update created the problem, my question is, how do I undo the MSI's most recent update to remove it? When I go into Add/Remove Programs, nothing is listed there. I'm not sure this is the source of the problem but I do know I didn't have it beforehand.
I'd greatly appreciate any help with this....even any ideas. While I have some computer knowledge, I'm not as tech savvy as most here, but this problem is, apart from driving me up a wall, making the computer almost unusable. FYI, I haven't done a System Restore because I've installed several things since and don't want to lose them if I can isolate the problem, but I will if that's what you all recommend.
Again, sorry for what may be a noobish question, but I'm not sure where else to go. After dealing with MSI's tech support, I'd rather talk to a wall.
    Thanks greatly.
    Pepper1

    Mark,
Forgive me for asking, but I am a bit confused. Is your "cold boot issue" now solved? If so, do you think that the new drives are the key?

    Sorry for late post.
After setting up the HW RAID (2500YS) for booting the system still cold boots.  strangely this time the reset (Ctrl+Alt+Del) doesn't seem to work.  I must of did it two dozen times and it would never clear.  I then just powered off after the other 2 drives on the nvidia SATA cleared and seen the HD LED light up and stay on for a few seconds(seems stuck on the 4723 checks of the drive) and then powered down and powered right back up with no cold boot issue.  It has worked this way every time for the last week or so and I tested it like 20 or so times(3-4 times a day).  These drives are listed as being compatible after the firmware update (and I did that already) so I guess it is either the MB BIOS needs updating or it's the way the nvidia chipset runs this setup is wacky.  This is assuming the 4723 HD compatibility list is correct.
here's a summary of the drives so far.
36GB Raptors (old revision) - can take forever to boot properly and corrupted my disk in 3 days of testing (scrambled my directory structure)
105GB Raptors - Just reset(Ctrl+Alt+Del) 1-4 times after the HD LED goes solid for a few seconds.  worked for two months no errors.
250GB Caviar RE(2500YS) - have to power off (power button) when HD LED goes solid.  so far no problems for a week.
80 GB SATA II Hitachi Deskstar (HDS728080PLA380 - May 2005) - same as 150 GB Raptors, just a reset or four, only did a days worth of testing with no errors.
well, I was hoping for those 2500YS to work properly.  Now it makes it really hard to track the problems with so many different errors and 3 different places it can go wrong 4723/nvidia/msi/HD Manufacturer.  wait, that's 4.  Oh boy!
Hopefully this gets resolved soon.  I've already had to move this MB to my secondary system, and for other reasons than this.  I didn't mind hitting the reset button to get this to run.  I get the feeling that MSI has abandoned this board on us.  with the new P7N being released it will be even harder to get anyone to mess with this thing.
