P6n Diamond, Q6600...running hot?

Hello all, it's been about a year or so since I built my PC, and no real complaints so far. I never bothered to OC...never felt the need. However recently I got interested in it, so I downloaded coretemp, cpuz, and prime95. Just running the torture test with NO OC, and my temps keep climbing and climbing, into 75 max before i close prime95 due to fear of frying something! Is prime95/torture test programs only to be used with aftermarket CPU cooling? I have great airflow, all the optional fans w/ my Antec 900, and was shocked to see those kind of numbers and I guess I'm just wondering if this is normal, or maybe indicating a faulty CPU? Once I end the prime95 test, all temps immediately plummet down to low 30s celcius. I'd like to OC my q6600 to somewhere within 2.8-3 ghz, but looking at these results and I'm thinking I definetly need an aftermarket CPU cooler to even think about OC.
To think people run prime 95 for a full day?? Would probably burn my house down at the rate my temps increase!!
Been fiddling around since I posted this, and looks like my temps never go over 75oC for the first phaze of prime95 tests, but then after Tes 3 completes and Test 1 starts over again, this is when my temps start to soar to high 70s, and thats when I end prime95 IN FEAR!

First of all, oc-ing with a stockcooler = bad idea.
Second, the Q6600 is known to be a hot head, especially if you got a B3 stepping.
Third, you'll never get such a load as Prime95 will do on your cpu in normal use. Its just a program to test all to the limit and the limit is something, we homeusers, will likely never see, unless benching.

No your cpu will not burn your house down, around 80-85C it begins to throttle down to avoid damage and will eventually shut down if temp keeps on rising.
Like you already mentioned, buy a decent aftermarketcooler first before even thinking of oc-ing your quad.
Better yet, if you buy a quad, buy a decentcooler with it, cause the intel stock is crap for quads.
If you had a dualcore, like I have, then you could get a minor oc with stockcooling, but I would recommend against it.
So read some reviews, google is your friend and look around to see whats best for you.

  • P6N Diamond + Q6600 Overclocking Help

    Hey guys,
After tweaking my setting for 7 hour, I got my computer stable @ 3.0Ghz using the following settings.
    MSI P6N Diamond
Thermaltake Big Typhoon (Idle Temps 25-30C / Under Load Temps 35-50C)
    FSB @ 1333
    Memory @ 800
    CPU Ratio @ 9x
    PCI-E @ 100
    CPU Voltage .0250V
    Memory @ 2.2V
    NB Voltage @ 1.325V
    SB Voltage @ 1.50V
    FSV VTT Voltage @ 12%
    C1E Disabled
Now, I ran Prime95 on it from 2 AM last night till 2PM today, and had no problems. Very stable.
My only problem now is that I get random restarts on my system sometimes, like when I'm loading stuff, and so it restarts randomly, and then on boot, my Wireless Card (D-Link DWA-552 Extreme Wireless N) wont work anymore. Windows will see it, and says it works, but it wont detect any wireless networks. My Sound Card works fine, it is also in a PCI slot like the Wireless Card, so I'm wondering what else I need to tweak to make my peripherals working.
    Thanks

  • Overclocking a MSI P6N Diamond (Q6600) I need help before I cry

So its about time for me to start overclocking. I have read the overclocking sticky and downloaded the appropriate programs to make sure I have a successful overclocking experience .
But... How do I do it?
So far I have found a site (Via google) that OC'd with my Mobo.
     http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=2182&page=4
Looks pretty legit so I tried it, the only thing is. I cant change the CPU, Memory, and SB voltage.
So... yeah everytime I try to change what I can (FSB and NB voltage) Windows isn't able to start up.
    God Please help me.

  • P6N Diamond problems and questions

OK first here is the set up
    P6N Diamond
    Q6600
    4GB OCZ DDR2 800
    Raptor X 150GB C drive
    Raptor 74GB D drive
    250GB WD SATA
    GF 8800GTS 640MB
Coolermax 850W PS 412 volt rails 28a on two of the rails
    Windows Vista ultimate 64
I loaded windows on the bare Raptor and it installed Reboot after install and loaded drivers from CD for chipset. Reboot and installed other drives. Now the fun begins...
I was able to install the Video driver downloaded from nVidia's website. But the system hangs constantly It doesn't matter what your doing driver install, windows update or just looking into drives. It starts the operation then it sits with just the fan running for about 5 or more min. then it starts working again. I haven't found any posts here with a similar problem so it must be something I did. My local store did advise a windows reinstall.
Second problem the RAM is seen by the board as 677 not 800. The manual is very unclear on how to change that. I did pick up some Corsair XMS RAM to use instead of the OCZ to make sure it's not a RAM problem. I also tried 1 stick of RAM as well.
Is there a BIOS setting guide for this board anywhere? Also do I need to update BIOS?
Thanks for any help in advance.

    Snowfalcon,
You can go to MSI's website, look in "downloads" and download a complete owners manual in PDF format for the P6N Diamond.  It contains a bios guide.  As far as the memory..you will probably have to increase the memory voltage in order for the bios to run it at the rated frequency, on my OCZ Platinum 6400s I run it at 2.1 volts to get the 800mhz rating. You may not be able to run all 4 gigs, I recommend using no more than 2 sticks in slots 1 & 3 until you get the OS loaded and running stable.  Oh, and dont "enable" the onboard audio until after all other drivers are loaded up.  Then you can load the Creative X-Fi drivers and software.  These suggestions work for WinXP..there are other threads in this forum concerning/specific to Vista installs.   Good luck.

  • P6n Diamond with q6600 question

I currently own an Asus Striker extreme and it sucks at overclocking Quad cores to put it nicely. I was looking at the P6n Diamond board and was wondering what kind of Overclocking to expect on it for a quad core.

Thanks for the reply. Appears it is plagued with the same issue as my current board after reading that. The only ones i've see that fixed the problem are EVGA and XFX but thier board layout doesn't work for me.

  • How do I monitor my northbridge temps? - P6N Diamond

That stupid little northbridge fan is stupidly loud so I'm playing with taking the fan out. How can I monitor my northbridge temps? Both my nvidia controls and speedfan give me environment and cpu and gpu, but none give me northbridge temps. Can any tell me how to monitor my northbridge temps?

You will need a thermal sensing device to determine the temperature properly but the P6N Diamond does not run really hot anyways.

  • P6n Dia + Q6600 OC Semi Noob Question

I recently had my q6600 oced on my P6N running stable at 3.0-3.1 (I don't remember the exact details, so please, bear with me) I remember putting the settings somewhere at
    clock 1380
    vcore 0.0125
    NB 1.50
    SB 1.70
    FSB VTT 12%
    Mem 5-5-5-15-T2
Now, again, bear with me cause I'm not sure if all the figures and terms are correct, it has been about a month, so you may have to do some deciphering.
Anyways, the main point is that I had a couple different configuration that would at least get me into windows and running for a couple hours under full load. I eventually found one that was stable, but again, not sure of exact settings, similar to ones above.
It got it stable, but it was hitting about high 60c in full load, so I did some additions to the cooling. Old cooler for reference was Coolermaster Hyper TX2 http://www.coolermaster.com/products/product.php?act=detail&tbcate=152&id=2554
So after recently adding a new
Coolermaster Hyper 212 CPU cooler http://www.coolermaster.com/products/product.php?act=detail&tbcate=152&id=3145
    silenx 120 case fan http://www.silenx.com/ixtremaprofans.asp?sku=ixp-74-14
and Seagate 750GB SATA hard drive
I cannot get a post at all using any settings to overclock with. Whenever I change the settings and restart, I just see a black screen, and the only thing that can get me back running is to press the clear CMOS button on the mobo. I have pretty much tried bumping the vcore up as high as I safely can, messed with settings that once worked before, tried various changes that I have come across skimming the boards here, tried it all over again with the new case fan and hard drive unplugged, nothing seems to be working. I was hoping perhaps someone with a little more insight here could help me out a bit
It has been about a month or so since I made the switch of the fans, so I don't recall all the details, but any help would be appreciated.
    I have right now
    P6N Diamond running beta bios
    2GB OCZ Memory
    Q6600 G0 step
    7800GTX OC
    1x dvd 18x DL writier
    2x Sata HDD
    1x Pata HDD
    600 watt P/S
    Thanks in advanced

Ok, so I got back into it to try some different settings and I'm getting a post and into windows, OC'ed right now. The only setting I remember that it totally different is rather than doing "manual" I am doing a "linked" adjustment.
I was always under the impression through reading the threads here that manual is a better option, but in my situation, it seems to be the only way I can get it running. I tried even doing a small 1200 oc, from 1066 and nothing, then I tried 1150, and figured, well, what the hell, I haven't tried a linked adjustment yet, so may as well. Tried that and it posted at 1150, then I went back in and set it up to 1333 which is 3.0 up from 2.4 on my chip, and it's booted up and typing now. I think I can get the fine tune adjustments from here on out.
I am interesting in the whole linked vs. manual setting though. So if anyone cares to provide insight as to why one works over the other, I would love to further my knowledge on it....or, if there is a way that I can do manual that would put in the same settings as doing a linked, that would be better for me, that would be great as well
I'm so happy though. Right now I'm at 3.0 GHZ, which is a 25%, I'm on full load and my temps haven't even gone over 50c  This new cooling really is amazing, especially for air. I'm so happy I now get to utilize it for the reason I got it. Just to put it in perspective, the last cooling set up I had, I would be hitting about 60c right now.

  • MSI P6N Diamond and very slow BIOS menus

I'm having problems with my new setup. My setup is as follows:
MSI P6N Diamond with 1.1 bios update
    2 x OCZ Platinum Revision 2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2P800R22GK
XION Supernova XON 600W Power Supply
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (not overclocked yet, having problems whenever I change settings)
EVGA  GeForce 8800GTS 640MB Video Card
I'm running Vista 32bit fine as far as I can tell, everything is pretty snappy and other programs are running fine, but the machine is very slow to post and running the bios menus is a painful process as it takes about 2-4 seconds to switch selections. I tried running the board with 1 stick of ram in slot 1, with slots 1 & 3 and all 4 and it made no difference. I had a USB card reader plugged in and then removing it seemed to make a difference for a while, the BIOS menus ran as I expected, very snappy. Also anytime I switch the CPU clock from automatic to manual the computer won't post and i have to reset the bios
Anyone have a clue what could be causing this slowness and my inability to overclock the cpu?

I will be getting the Q6600 in 1 week, :D.  The new G0 stepping as well :D. I'm excited.
Are you using XP or Vista? I have had no distortion or pops with my sound.  Although, from what I hear the drivers for XP or much more polished than those for Vista.  This is a Creative issue, and not an MSI issue.  Lots of people are having problems with Vista with the standalone Creative cards as well.
I overclocked my E6700 to about 3.5Ghz, and hit a temp wall based on my ambient temps.  I probably could have gone higher if it was cooler in the room that houses the computer.  Although, the temps have dropped dramatically after the AS5 has cured, probably could get it pushed up a bit higher.  Hopefully I don't have problems with it when the Q6600 comes in.
If you got the older B3 stepping version, it will run a bit hotter and will be much harder to OC to higher speeds because of this.  I've found the P6N Diamond to be very OC friendly and like all the options it gives.  The only thing I don't like is the adjustment of the Vcore lists the # above stock, instead of the absolute #. Sometimes the Vcore it auto assigns isn't 100% correct I've heard so it'd be nice to know what that auto value is.  The Vcore reading you can read in the monitor section fluctuates a hair in each direction of 1.3 for me when at stock, so I assume it was 1.3 stock.

  • P6N Diamond ran perfect but now wont post / no display

Like those here I built many a computer in my day using all the right tools and precautions.  But this one really has made me mad.  I don't have much money, so believe  me when I say I saved my pennies...cause I sure did for this rig although nothing special.  Enough of the sob story on with the program.  I had it running fine...all temps voltages were up to spec and fine.  No over clocking what so ever not even the ram.  When I would shut the computer down and left it off for more then a few hours it would not post.  The D-Bracket leds showed that it was freezing on the ever so wonderful:
    "Initializing Video Interface
This will start detecting the CPU clock, checking type of video onboard.  Then detect and initialize the video adapter"
So cussing like a sailor I ran through the onslaught of checking every component on and off different settings ect.
    I tried:
    - Reseting the CMOS
    - Removing all peripherials
    - Setting the board up outside the case
    - Switching graphics cards with known graphics cards
    - Swapping the memory
    - Starting it with a pin (instead of the case switch)
    - Reseating the processor
you name it and I tried it...I read through as many posts as I could....tried the tricks and yet nothing.  I'm ready to RMA it...cause I'm past the Newegg 30 days by 9 days.
    My system Specs:
    -MSI P6N Diamond
-Core 2 Quad Q6600 SLACR (stock speeds)
    -2 gig Patriot DDR2 800MHz kit (2 X 1GB) PDC22G6400LLK 2.2v (Stock latency)

    -2 SATA Drives (1 maxtor 160 and 1 Seagate 160)
    -1 SATA DVD Burner Liteon

This could be the cause of your problem.  Your PSU has two seperate +12V rails that cannot accumulate their power output.
If your video card does not have its own power connector, it may be trapped on one of the two rails together with your quad core and other system devices.
I believe this is a very possible explanation at the moment.
If you are going to try a different PSU, it will be best if you try one that has just one strong +12V rail.  Around 30A should be fine.  If your system won't boot up a proper PSU, the problem is somewhere else.

  • P6n diamond, no post, no leds on the d-bracket

Tried setting up my new P6N diamond today with a Q6600, and 8GB of Patriot memory.  No post, not LEDs in the d-bracket and no beep codes.
Pulled out some RAM, tried it at 4GB, and at 2GB, no luck.
Tried a E6300 and a Pentium D, and also some Muskin value-ram, same results.
I don't think the system is overheating, it will run without posting for as long as I let it.
I tried to 2 different PCI-E cards (X1900xtx, and 6600GT) as well as an MX4000 PCI card.  All components (except the PSU and motherboard) are known to work in other configs.
I'd like to think there's something I'm missing, I've got both power connectors set up,  the PSU is a Thermaltake 750W, brand new.  I really don't want to have to RMA this thing.
I also tried clearing the CMOS with the SW3 button as well as pulling the battery.
update:  tonight, I was able to see the 4 leds come on, they are very, very faint, so I couldn't see them in the daylight, they seem to flicker a little.  I've reseated the CPUs several times and still get no post, beep, etc, even removing the RAM gives no beep
Pulling the RAM and CPU out and powering on results in the same results from the d-bracket, 4 very faint green leds

    My q6600 isn't a G0.
I tried both 1GB and 2GB DIMMS, same results.
Also, I don't get any LEDs on the board
I also just tested the power supply with a different MB, and it works fine.

  • Deciding on a new CPU for P6N Diamond

    Hi all,
I'm looking at upgrading my cpu before moving to vista.  I'd like to get a nice extreme edition since this is my dream pc.  I'm pretty sure the QX6850 will work with it, but has anyone tried the QX9650?  I saw some of the other Yorkfield processors are under testing and will most likely work with the latest bios, except the QX9650.  I'd be will to buy the processor and wait for the next bios update, but I'm not sure if the next bios update will add support for that processor.
    Thanks

Sorry for the bad news, but the P6N Diamond will NOT support any Yorkfield processors in the future.  Future bios updates will only support Wolfdale processors...not the new quad core series..:(  If you want to run a 45nm CPU, you will need to stick with a dual core or update to the 780i or 750i board.  Bummer.

  • P6N Diamond New Problem: Second HDD Randomly Starts/Stops Since recent Update

    Howdy All,
Continuing problems with the P5N Diamond.
    This one's new.
Previously I had the same problem as many others with the cold boot issue. Somehow, someway, it just stopped: cold boot or not, one day it just started booting fine....go figure.
However, I recently (about 3 weeks ago) did the MSI live update that included something or other pertaining to the E-SATA....support for it or something to that end. Although I don't use the E-SATA, I installed it thinking I might at some point and since installing it, I have discovered a new problem: my second drives (in RAID 0) just opens/closes randomly. It seems to mostly occur when operating demanding programs: gaming, watching a video, that sort of thing.
Everytime it does this, it takes me to desktop and asks me what program I want to use to open the program......which when I do, is nothing more than my second (D drive) HDDs in RAID 0. I then get the yellow pop up message in the bottom toolbar from Windows saying it's experienced a write failure problem. It hasn't done any damage that I can tell and I've lost nothing, but being taken to desktop perpetually is a major issue. This problem is driving me absolutely up the wall. No sooner than I start to do something and wham.....I'm at desktop being asked what program I want to use to open up the second HDDs. I've also tried just leaving it open but to no avail: it just randomly continues to open and close.
I have my O/S on the C drive and 2 more HDDs in RAID O for back up on ports 6 & 7. Since doing the MSI update that included the E-SATA whatever, this new problem almost prevents the computer from being usable: certainly nothing in gaming is possible along with anything that requires uninterruption.
    Here's my system:
    M/B: P6N Diamond
    CPU: E6850
    RAM: Corsair XMS PC-8500, 2 x 1 gig
    HDD: 1- WD 150 Raptor
    HDD: 2- WD 5000AAKS in Raid 0
    Vid Card: EVGA 8800GTX
PSU: PC Power & Cooling 750 Silencer
    ODD: Sony DRU 830A
    FDD: Sony Floppy
    Misc: Scythe fans x 5
    O/S: XP Pro w/ SP2
    Running BIOS 1.2
So, being fairly certain the MSI update created the problem, my question is, how do I undo the MSI's most recent update to remove it? When I go into Add/Remove Programs, nothing is listed there. I'm not sure this is the source of the problem but I do know I didn't have it beforehand.
I'd greatly appreciate any help with this....even any ideas. While I have some computer knowledge, I'm not as tech savvy as most here, but this problem is, apart from driving me up a wall, making the computer almost unusable. FYI, I haven't done a System Restore because I've installed several things since and don't want to lose them if I can isolate the problem, but I will if that's what you all recommend.
Again, sorry for what may be a noobish question, but I'm not sure where else to go. After dealing with MSI's tech support, I'd rather talk to a wall.
    Thanks greatly.
    Pepper1

    Mark,
Forgive me for asking, but I am a bit confused. Is your "cold boot issue" now solved? If so, do you think that the new drives are the key?

After setting up the HW RAID (2500YS) for booting the system still cold boots.  strangely this time the reset (Ctrl+Alt+Del) doesn't seem to work.  I must of did it two dozen times and it would never clear.  I then just powered off after the other 2 drives on the nvidia SATA cleared and seen the HD LED light up and stay on for a few seconds(seems stuck on the 4723 checks of the drive) and then powered down and powered right back up with no cold boot issue.  It has worked this way every time for the last week or so and I tested it like 20 or so times(3-4 times a day).  These drives are listed as being compatible after the firmware update (and I did that already) so I guess it is either the MB BIOS needs updating or it's the way the nvidia chipset runs this setup is wacky.  This is assuming the 4723 HD compatibility list is correct.
here's a summary of the drives so far.
36GB Raptors (old revision) - can take forever to boot properly and corrupted my disk in 3 days of testing (scrambled my directory structure)
105GB Raptors - Just reset(Ctrl+Alt+Del) 1-4 times after the HD LED goes solid for a few seconds.  worked for two months no errors.
250GB Caviar RE(2500YS) - have to power off (power button) when HD LED goes solid.  so far no problems for a week.
80 GB SATA II Hitachi Deskstar (HDS728080PLA380 - May 2005) - same as 150 GB Raptors, just a reset or four, only did a days worth of testing with no errors.
well, I was hoping for those 2500YS to work properly.  Now it makes it really hard to track the problems with so many different errors and 3 different places it can go wrong 4723/nvidia/msi/HD Manufacturer.  wait, that's 4.  Oh boy!
Hopefully this gets resolved soon.  I've already had to move this MB to my secondary system, and for other reasons than this.  I didn't mind hitting the reset button to get this to run.  I get the feeling that MSI has abandoned this board on us.  with the new P7N being released it will be even harder to get anyone to mess with this thing.

  • P6n Diamond & GeForce 8800 GTS, No Signal from Video Card

This is my first computer build. It has taken waaay to long and now I'm on my final step - Getting the video card to work.
    I am running the following:
MSI P6N Diamond MoBo - Bios are set to the "optimal settings"
    EVGA 640-p2-N821-AR GeForce 8800GTS 640mb 320-bit GDDR3...
    Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Conroe 2.66ghz 4m shared L2 Caeche LGA 775
    OCZ GameXStream ATX12V 700W Power Supply 100-240V
    (2 - not RAID) Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB 7200 RPM 16mb cache Sata 3gb/s Hard Drives
    Philips 20x Dvd/r
In an Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Case
    Dell E207WFP LCD Monitor
    Windows XP Pro
*I've updated windows with all their high priority updates, installed the drivers on the cd from MSI
My problem: When I enable my video card and restart, I can hear the computer starting windows and I see the first load screen but then my monitor says - no signal, turns black and goes into powersaver mode.  The very limited manual from EVGA says: "Quite often this problem is caused by the integrated video card adapter not being disabled prior to installing the new PCI based viedo card"
My question is this: Does the P6N have an intergrated video card that I should be turning off to get my video card to show? I ran a DxDiag and did not see one. Also, I did only saw one video adapter listed in the device manager.

  • MSI P6N Diamond with E8400 EIST

Running the p6n diamond with the E8400 and I can not seem to get the EIST to work.  I try to enable it in the bios, but once I exit it goes back to disabled.  Even with the F4 in the bios, I do not see any options for the C1 feature.  Currently I have my CPU OCed to 3.6GHz, but that is recent and I could never get the EIST to work even at stock speeds.
    Bios version 1.3 btw

but just not EIST staying enabled.
That means, if you re-enter the BIOS Setup after you have saved & exited it, your changes are lost?  All of them or just "Intel EIST" in the Cell Menu?

because the OCing voltage/FSB is changing
Can you be more specific about what values are actually changing and under which condiditions?  Try to give a more detailed explanation of what is actually going on there.

I could not find C1E support anywhere before even with F4 in the bios, is it suppose to be there?
It should be under "CPU Features".  Press F4 multiple times while you are in that BIOS Section.

People have said there is suppose to be an "EIST" option in there, but I have never seen it.
There is no "EIST" option in there.

Hi folks, could someone help me here....
I'm not able to boot up when I install my 4x2gb ocz chips onto my board.
It will boot up with 6gb, but not 8gb.  What could possibly be the problem with this?  Anyone have a clue?
