P6N Diamond sound problem

P6N Diamond has recently developed a sound problem. I am using Audioengine2 stereo speakers and the left speaker has started producing distortion (but no other sound) when switched on and connected to onboard Sound Blaster X-Fi Extreme audio. The right speaker works fine. Distortion is produced when the computer is booted and not just in windows. Both speakers and cables all work fine connected to my ipod so I assume the problem is with the P6N diamond onboard audio and not my speaker setup.
I have also tried reinstalling creative drivers and disabling and re-enabling sound blaster in device manager but the problem persists.
Many thanks in advance for any assistance provided.

Are you asking how do you power the system on with it out of the case? Are you able to connect front panel power switch to JFP1 or are the wires too short? If needed just take a small screwdriver or whatever and for 1 second or so short pins 6-8 together to turn system on. That would be the same as pushing the power button on the case.

  • P6N Diamond (space problem w/X-Fi cooler height)

Hi guys, I'm using an outdated mobo (MSI P6N Diamond). Since I'm having problems with the CPU temperature, I decided to replace the cooler coming by default with the processor, so I bought a Thermaltake Blue Orb II.
The problem is the new cooler wont fit on the processor, unless I remove the X-Fi cooler (so this thread is essencially a coolers issue ) because the space available for this huge cooler is not enough because the X-Fi cooler height.
So I wonder... what would be the consequences of removing the X-Fi cooler, if I don't use this sound card. I've disabled it in the BIOS, and I'm using an old PCI sound card.
    Let me know your opinions...
PD: Do you know why this mobo was left behind so fast by MSI.

Roger that, gurpz thanks for that clarification plus your suggestion about the Zalman cooler. I'm going right now to check it in the web.
Do you have 1 of those? I'm asking this cause I'd like to be extra sure this time it will fit the available space, and avoid falling twice in the same mistake.

  • P6N Diamond New Problem: Second HDD Randomly Starts/Stops Since recent Update

    Howdy All,
Continuing problems with the P5N Diamond.
    This one's new.
Previously I had the same problem as many others with the cold boot issue. Somehow, someway, it just stopped: cold boot or not, one day it just started booting fine....go figure.
However, I recently (about 3 weeks ago) did the MSI live update that included something or other pertaining to the E-SATA....support for it or something to that end. Although I don't use the E-SATA, I installed it thinking I might at some point and since installing it, I have discovered a new problem: my second drives (in RAID 0) just opens/closes randomly. It seems to mostly occur when operating demanding programs: gaming, watching a video, that sort of thing.
Everytime it does this, it takes me to desktop and asks me what program I want to use to open the program......which when I do, is nothing more than my second (D drive) HDDs in RAID 0. I then get the yellow pop up message in the bottom toolbar from Windows saying it's experienced a write failure problem. It hasn't done any damage that I can tell and I've lost nothing, but being taken to desktop perpetually is a major issue. This problem is driving me absolutely up the wall. No sooner than I start to do something and wham.....I'm at desktop being asked what program I want to use to open up the second HDDs. I've also tried just leaving it open but to no avail: it just randomly continues to open and close.
I have my O/S on the C drive and 2 more HDDs in RAID O for back up on ports 6 & 7. Since doing the MSI update that included the E-SATA whatever, this new problem almost prevents the computer from being usable: certainly nothing in gaming is possible along with anything that requires uninterruption.
    Here's my system:
    M/B: P6N Diamond
    CPU: E6850
    RAM: Corsair XMS PC-8500, 2 x 1 gig
    HDD: 1- WD 150 Raptor
    HDD: 2- WD 5000AAKS in Raid 0
    Vid Card: EVGA 8800GTX
PSU: PC Power & Cooling 750 Silencer
    ODD: Sony DRU 830A
    FDD: Sony Floppy
    Misc: Scythe fans x 5
    O/S: XP Pro w/ SP2
    Running BIOS 1.2
So, being fairly certain the MSI update created the problem, my question is, how do I undo the MSI's most recent update to remove it? When I go into Add/Remove Programs, nothing is listed there. I'm not sure this is the source of the problem but I do know I didn't have it beforehand.
I'd greatly appreciate any help with this....even any ideas. While I have some computer knowledge, I'm not as tech savvy as most here, but this problem is, apart from driving me up a wall, making the computer almost unusable. FYI, I haven't done a System Restore because I've installed several things since and don't want to lose them if I can isolate the problem, but I will if that's what you all recommend.
Again, sorry for what may be a noobish question, but I'm not sure where else to go. After dealing with MSI's tech support, I'd rather talk to a wall.
    Thanks greatly.

    Mark,
Forgive me for asking, but I am a bit confused. Is your "cold boot issue" now solved? If so, do you think that the new drives are the key?

    Sorry for late post.
After setting up the HW RAID (2500YS) for booting the system still cold boots.  strangely this time the reset (Ctrl+Alt+Del) doesn't seem to work.  I must of did it two dozen times and it would never clear.  I then just powered off after the other 2 drives on the nvidia SATA cleared and seen the HD LED light up and stay on for a few seconds(seems stuck on the 4723 checks of the drive) and then powered down and powered right back up with no cold boot issue.  It has worked this way every time for the last week or so and I tested it like 20 or so times(3-4 times a day).  These drives are listed as being compatible after the firmware update (and I did that already) so I guess it is either the MB BIOS needs updating or it's the way the nvidia chipset runs this setup is wacky.  This is assuming the 4723 HD compatibility list is correct.
here's a summary of the drives so far.
36GB Raptors (old revision) - can take forever to boot properly and corrupted my disk in 3 days of testing (scrambled my directory structure)
105GB Raptors - Just reset(Ctrl+Alt+Del) 1-4 times after the HD LED goes solid for a few seconds.  worked for two months no errors.
250GB Caviar RE(2500YS) - have to power off (power button) when HD LED goes solid.  so far no problems for a week.
80 GB SATA II Hitachi Deskstar (HDS728080PLA380 - May 2005) - same as 150 GB Raptors, just a reset or four, only did a days worth of testing with no errors.
well, I was hoping for those 2500YS to work properly.  Now it makes it really hard to track the problems with so many different errors and 3 different places it can go wrong 4723/nvidia/msi/HD Manufacturer.  wait, that's 4.  Oh boy!
Hopefully this gets resolved soon.  I've already had to move this MB to my secondary system, and for other reasons than this.  I didn't mind hitting the reset button to get this to run.  I get the feeling that MSI has abandoned this board on us.  with the new P7N being released it will be even harder to get anyone to mess with this thing.

  • MSI P6N SLI sound problem under windows 7

    Hi all!
I have an MSI P6N SLI mainboard and I have installed win7 ultimate x64 to get a look on that OS. Everything works fine expect one thing: I have no sound. I tried to install manually the realtek sound driver but no changes. When I check the Volume Control Options then neither the Speakers nor the Realtek Digital Output checked (but the speaker is plugged in).
However I have sound under Linux.
Could someone help me? (and sorry if I have missed the topic which resolves this problem if there is any)

    Hi everyone,
hope it's ok to refresh this thread - I did not want to open up a new one, because this one matches my problem perfectly - but my speakers are plugged-in the right way
I'm running Win7 64 on the MSI P6N SLI (not v2 no Platinum) and am unable to install the sounddriver (well not correct - I did install the driver). The upgrade advisor said all green (under Win XP 32) and the MSI-Driver-Page propagates Win7 32/64 is supported for the SoundCard of my Board.
The driver installs just fine, but the device won't come out of "I have a problem"-state - always telling me "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)" (I event tried installing the driver manually with pointing the win-hardware-setup-routine to the driver-directory) - still no use - I removed and rebootet serveral times...
Hope anybody has a solution for this problem (I'm taking the posts above as a "this has to work"-basis so i'm not ready to give up and go out there and buy a new soundcard )
Thanks in advance for any hint.

Have you tried the newest Realtek drivers and codec?
If you click on the link it should begin download.
    If not, go to "http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=driver&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1140"

  • MSI P6N Diamond OC Problems

I am having a really hard time overclocking on this board past 1150 fsb 9x on a Q6600 processor.
I'm pretty sure the speedstep is giving me a problem, but the C1E option is nowhere to be found in the bios (1.0).  CPUZ constantly shows the processor downstepping to 1.6ghz on a 8x multiplier.  The C1E option is clearly labeled in the manual but it definitely not in the actual bios.  What's up with this?
    Bios 1.1 was even worse.

My temps are very good, actually, with a zalman 9700 led and arctic silver grease.  26 C idle and ~35 C at load with stock 2.4 ghz speed.
I'm pretty sure the mobo is the source of the problem.  It doesn't seem like to like setting my corsair pc8500 at its rated 1066mhz either.

  • P6n diamond - audio is recognized but I still have no sound!

I originally had no sound AND the x-fi wasn't even recognized but then I realized that I had not enabled it on the board so I turned it on in the bios. After that I downloaded the drivers from the Cd that came with the board. Everything on the computer recognizes that the x-fi audio is there and even the little volume test moves like sound is working but I have NO sound AT ALL. I tried every audio port possible(my headphones were verified as working by testing them with a CD player). I Have set the x-fi audio to default also.

  • P6N Diamond - Creative Sound Card / Windows 7

    Hello everyone,
Couldn't find anyone else with a similar issue so figured I'd post here. I'm using a P6N Diamond (obviously) and here's the issue:
Originally this PC had Windows XP installed. When I upgrade to Windows 7 x64 Pro(1-2 months ago), my computer became unable to recognize the integrated Creative sound card. I've tried the following:
1.) Using provided driver discs (Using Vista x64 drivers, closest match)
2.) Downloading various Creative programs, drivers, etc. to add drivers
3.) Checked MSI's site and downloaded various drivers, updates etc.
None of the following worked. I primarly use a USB headset, which works perfectly. However, I'd like to be able to use speakers as well (used to be able to do it when Windows found my soundcard).
Anyone have any ideas for resolving this? I really appreciate any help, thanks!

If I follow you correctly, this problem only starts after you have upgraded to Windows 7, right? If that is the case, it is obviously a driver issue. Though you have tried many drivers and it seems that they are not the right ones. What you can do is to try contact MSI support and see if they can help you.

  • P6N Diamond problems and questions

OK first here is the set up
    P6N Diamond
    Q6600
    4GB OCZ DDR2 800
    Raptor X 150GB C drive
    Raptor 74GB D drive
    250GB WD SATA
    GF 8800GTS 640MB
Coolermax 850W PS 412 volt rails 28a on two of the rails
    Windows Vista ultimate 64
I loaded windows on the bare Raptor and it installed Reboot after install and loaded drivers from CD for chipset. Reboot and installed other drives. Now the fun begins...
I was able to install the Video driver downloaded from nVidia's website. But the system hangs constantly It doesn't matter what your doing driver install, windows update or just looking into drives. It starts the operation then it sits with just the fan running for about 5 or more min. then it starts working again. I haven't found any posts here with a similar problem so it must be something I did. My local store did advise a windows reinstall.
Second problem the RAM is seen by the board as 677 not 800. The manual is very unclear on how to change that. I did pick up some Corsair XMS RAM to use instead of the OCZ to make sure it's not a RAM problem. I also tried 1 stick of RAM as well.
Is there a BIOS setting guide for this board anywhere? Also do I need to update BIOS?
Thanks for any help in advance.

    Snowfalcon,
You can go to MSI's website, look in "downloads" and download a complete owners manual in PDF format for the P6N Diamond.  It contains a bios guide.  As far as the memory..you will probably have to increase the memory voltage in order for the bios to run it at the rated frequency, on my OCZ Platinum 6400s I run it at 2.1 volts to get the 800mhz rating. You may not be able to run all 4 gigs, I recommend using no more than 2 sticks in slots 1 & 3 until you get the OS loaded and running stable.  Oh, and dont "enable" the onboard audio until after all other drivers are loaded up.  Then you can load the Creative X-Fi drivers and software.  These suggestions work for WinXP..there are other threads in this forum concerning/specific to Vista installs.   Good luck.

  • A weird problem w p6n Diamond

    Hello,
I recently made another post under the BIOS section, but please know that this is not a duplicate post. This is an entirely different issue I have (even though this is the very reason I want to update BIOS to v1.3).
    My specs are:
    Windows 7 Ultimate 64
    Intel Core 2 Duo E6859 3.0Ghz 1333FSB
MSI p6n Diamond nForce 680i SLI
    AE 1G DDR2 PC6400 (CL5) x 4 = 4G RAM
    NVidia 8800 GTS 512 MB PCI-E
    Hitachi HD - 160GB SATA-II 3GB/s 8MB 7200RPM
    3 cooling fans
Power: TAGAN 1100Watt Quad SLI Ready
    The weird situation is:
I just bought new RAM: Patriot Extreme Performance Gaming Series DDR2 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400 Enhanced Latency DIMM Kit.
The manufacture website says they should be run at 800MHz, 5-5-5-12, 1.9v.
    These are things I tried.
    1.
    Remove the 1GB x 4 RAMs.
Install the new RAM in the dual channel setting (one in slot 1, another in slot 3).
    Load optimized default in BIOS.
Result: I can boot into Windows and operate fine, but when I run Windows Mem Diag on startup,
    it says hardware problem detected.
    2.
Basically did the same thing with a single channel setting (Put them in slot 1 & 2).
    Result: same as above.
    3.
Now this is the weird part.
Just to experiment, I added the existing 1GB RAM sticks together with the new ones
    in this setting: Slot 1 = 1GB, Slot 2 = 1GB, Slot 3 = 2GB, Slot 4 = 2GB.
Then, load optimized default in BIOS.
With this setting, it passed Windows Mem Diag. It didn't find anything.
So, I am basically confused. I basically just want to use the new RAM sticks.
I know it's not a good idea to mix RAMs, so that's not what I'm trying to do, but
mixing is the only setting that passed the test, oddly... And, of course I don't mind
being able to use them together to get 6GB.
But, the most important is to make the new RAMs work. So, if you have any suggestions, please help.
I wondered if BIOS update would help (my current one is v1.2, new one is v1.3), but I've had issues
updating BIOS on p6n (hence the other thread), so I'm kinda stuck not knowing what to do.
If you are curious, this is my other post regarding the BIOS problem:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=140274.0
    Thank you.

Hmm, this forum is weird... I tried to edit my earlier post rather than making another reply (which is usually considered a polite approach in forums), but it didn't let me edit d/t time limit.
    Anyways,
So, this is what happened. My existing 1GB memories are all fine. But, the new RAMs failed the test miserably. I tried different setting like you suggested. I even tried setting timing manually. Nothing worked. While I was doing this, I also discovered that my MB's dual channel apparently doesn't work. I put the good 1GB memories to slot 1 and 3 to test it. It couldn't even boot into Windows (froze).
Anyhow, at this point, rather than that both my new RAMs are defective, but I'm wondering if this is more of a memory compatibility issue with my MB. So, this leads me to the question: would the BIOS update v1.3 potentially resolve this issue? I saw that one of the changes in v1.3 was memory compatibility. Please share your ideas.

  • P6N Diamond: Problems, Issues, or just trials & tribulations?

P6N Diamond: Problems, Issues, or just trials & tribulations?
I've had some issues with my new pc (see my sig). I initially finished it about a month ago. It was running just fine
until 10 days ago. On 11/10, I finished the evening by adding 2 gb of material to Oblivion & then defragging w/Diskeeper 2k7
(the 3rd defrag that week). The next morning I turned the pc on & it posted normally but then the screen went blank,
except for the words "missing operating system". I restarted the pc a couple of times, which didn't help, I then checked
the bios, & the drive was properly listed. Next, I tried to repair the boot record w/Vista's Recovery Console (RC), however the
RC didn't see an OS, even after loading sata drivers. While pointing the RC to the drivers, I tried to access the C:, the RC
said that drive needed to be formatted. I took that to mean the drive was toast, so I ordered the Seagate (still tried to
fix the boot record through the command prompt using Dos repair commands-no luck), which arrived on 11/15.
That evening I loaded the new hdd & then Vista, after which came the vista updates, drivers, then some of my other basic
programs (diskeeper, firefox, foxit, etc.) & then I defragged. One thing that seemed odd to me about this new install was
that the 'bubbles' screensaver seemed sluggish, that is, less energetic than the first time through. After defragging I was
going to shutdown when another vista upgrade popped up, checked to see if it was important or recommended-it was important.
I clicked to install & it started to install & then the pc got hung up. I tried C-A-D, but it didn't work so I hit the reset
button, got back to the windows desktop, everything looked fine, so I decided to put the pc to bed & do the rest the next
day, the pc turned off gracefully.
11/16. I turned on the pc & it posted properly, but then went to a blue screen. I don't remember what the message was, something
about windows being unable to start, I think. I then hit C-A-D & then loaded the RC. The RC was able to see an OS this time,
so I clicked on it & the repair started. After a couple of minutes the repair finished & asked to restart, which I did. The
pc posted just fine again, but then went to another blue screen, but with a different message, as I recall. I did the RC thing
again, though this time  after the repair was going for a few seconds, I was asked if I wanted go to an earlier restore point,
which I did. I was asked to restart again, I did & the pc booted all the to the desktop. I spent the rest of the day checking
out data corruption & diskeeper 2k7, I did find some forums where that was discussed. Though there was also mention of bad
memory causing data corruption as well-more to think about. The pc shutdown gracefully at bed time.
11/17. When I turned on the pc this day I didn't pay close attention, since I figured my pc problems were over, however when
I looked the screen it was black, no messages or anything. A point to the good was that the fans were running & the stylized
light on the XiFi card was lit. Still, a big '' was bouncing about in head. It seemed the pc didn't post. What was wrong:
the motherboard; the videocard; the ram; or, maybe the new hdd? So, I thought about the situation for while. Should I go to
a pro? Should I test my other, unused, ram stick? And, where did I put that damn diagnostic bracket that came with the mobo?
After a couple of hours, I decided to start the fixing process by hitting the reset button. Perhaps the pc did post earlier,
or at least partially, because the pc performed a partial post this time, with the message 'checksum bad' under the partial
component list. At the bottom of the screen was 'press f1 to setup.' I pressed f1 & got into the bios. In the bios, I
noticed several differences, particularly the sata controller being disabled & the boot list was messed up. I corrected
those & saved & exited. I then loaded the RC to see if any more repairs were needed, but none were. I restarted the pc &
it booted & loaded into vista quickly & cleanly. The pc has continued to boot cleanly the past three days while I've been
watching for hardware problems, mainly ram or cmos battery errors.
11/20. So, now what? I'm seriously considering reinstalling vista once more. I think my hardware is alright, I suspect
Saturday's problem was a conflict between the restore point & the bios. I'm ambivalent about diskeeper, I've bought it,
but I didn't buy it to beat myself over the head with.
If you've read this far would you do me the additional favor of telling me your opinion? I've noticed a fair amount of wisdom in this
forum & I think I could use a little extra input. Happy Thanksgiving!
    Thank you all,
    tryggvi

    ...The saga continues...
11/24. PC posted & went right to vista. I decided to test a different set of vid drivers so I installed th geforce 169.12 betas to see if that would eliminate the screensaver sluggishness I mentioned above-it did, the driver has been stable but I haven't pushed them either. PC ran fine all day & it shut down normally at the end of the day.
11/25. PC posted & went right to vista. I installed several programs (including auslogics defragger) & attached 3 sata (1 optical & 2 ext.hdds). Defragged in the middle of the afternoon & pc ran fine the rest of the day & shut down normally that night.
11/26. PC posted but the I got the "missing operating message." Damn! So, now I'm thinking defrag corruption, bad sata controller, or failing cmos battery. I tried to fix the vista install w/recovery console, but it couldn't even find an os. I also checked the bios during this time, everything was fine except that the time was off by a couple of hours. I did a clean install of vista again on a lean machine & then some basic programs. I turned of the pc a couple hours later and added 2 sata drives, the pc posted & loaded vista just fine. The pc shut down normally at the end of the day.
11/27. No apparent post. I hit the restart button, the pc then posted w/a 'checksum bad' message at the bottom. I got into the bios & found the following entries changed: time & date; full screen logo display; boot sequence; on board sata controller; and, boot from other devices. I reset these entries & saved & exited. The pc booted into vista just fine & ran normally the rest of the day, shutting down normally as well.
11/28. No apparent post again. Repeated the immediate above, the same entries were changed, so I reset them & the pc posted & vista loaded just fine. With the same changes happening 2 days in a row, & all the bad things happening after the pc being off over night, the problem seems fairly certainly to be a bad or failing cmos battery, especially since I haven't tried to flash the bios or shut down the pc improperly. In my research of cmos battery problems, it was recommended that you try to recharge the battery by leaving the pc on 24-48 hours before replacing the problem, so I'll leave the pc on until the evening of the 30th.
11/29. 36 hours plus & the pc is doing fine. Sorry for the journal, but it helps me think & gives others a clearer idea about what's been going on. Does anyone have any other ideas? My cmos battery is a 'KTS lithium cr2032', if need be can I replace this w/any other cr2032? Especially since I can't find a KTS one.
    Thanks all,

    Hey.
I’m the happy owner of a MSI P6N Diamond, but I have some problems when I try to install Vista.
My system as it is now:
    CPU: E6600
    GFX: 7900GT
    RAM: 2x1gb Cell Shock PC6400
Running XP SP2 without problems on 2x36gb raptors in RAID0
Yesterday I decided to try Vista x64, because I have 2gb extra ram that I want to use. So I took one of my old IBM PATA 120gb HDDs, and tried to install vista x64, but then I ran into a problem. When I get to the point where it says "Completing Installation" and "Your Computer will restart several times during installation" It restarts but then nothing happens. The screen just went black (and the monitor is switching off), and I can hear the computer is still running (and there is still light in mouse and keyboard). If I try to restart, the the vista loading bar appears and then the same thing happens. Black screen and then nothing.
    What to do?
I have tried disconnecting all my other drives and I have tried with only one memory block (1gb)
    Hope somebody can help me
    /Christian

    Inside,
I had similar issues when I first installed Vista and I don't think it installed correctly as it is...
One thing I noticed was that the Memory in particular is undervolted with this board if the bios is set to auto. Make sure you manually set the voltage to your RAM manufacturers voltage. Do the same thing with the timings and speed...
I had everything set to auto at first and I couldn't even get Vista to unpack 100% until I manually set things...
I need to reinstall windows I think because my installation is still messed up as I didn't change the timings until I started getting BSOD on first boot... Try it let us know if it works.

I have been having lots of problems with Windows XP just locking up on me.  It has happened 3 times now, and I am tiring of re-building my PC from scratch.  Every time, it works for a while, and then, just locks up one day.
At this point, I've removed my partition, rebuilt it, reformatted and re-installed windows.  I'm currently running the AMI v1.3 bios.  I've loaded the latest nVidia drivers (9.53 driver package).  I've loaded the latest graphic drivers from EVGA (169.02_XP32).
I've read lots of posts in various forums about issues with SATA settings on nVidia systems, but I can't seem to find a post that is clear about the best settings.  They mentioned disabling command queuing, using/not using SiL drivers, etc.  Can anyone offer any insight that might help me straighten out my system?  I am close to tossing it out a window.
