P6n Diamond with q6600 question

I currently own an Asus Striker extreme and it sucks at overclocking Quad cores to put it nicely. I was looking at the P6n Diamond board and was wondering what kind of Overclocking to expect on it for a quad core.

Thanks for the reply. Appears it is plagued with the same issue as my current board after reading that. The only ones i've see that fixed the problem are EVGA and XFX but thier board layout doesn't work for me.

Running the p6n diamond with the E8400 and I can not seem to get the EIST to work. I try to enable it in the bios, but once I exit it goes back to disabled. Even with the F4 in the bios, I do not see any options for the C1 feature. Currently I have my CPU OCed to 3.6GHz, but that is recent and I could never get the EIST to work even at stock speeds.

That means, if you re-enter the BIOS Setup after you have saved & exited it, your changes are lost? All of them or just "Intel EIST" in the Cell Menu?

because the OCing voltage/FSB is changing
Can you be more specific about what values are actually changing and under which condiditions? Try to give a more detailed explanation of what is actually going on there.

I could not find C1E support anywhere before even with F4 in the bios, is it suppose to be there?
It should be under "CPU Features". Press F4 multiple times while you are in that BIOS Section.

There is no "EIST" option in there.

• P6N Diamond problems and questions

OK first here is the set up
P6N Diamond
Q6600
4GB OCZ DDR2 800
Raptor X 150GB C drive
Raptor 74GB D drive
250GB WD SATA
GF 8800GTS 640MB
Coolermax 850W PS 412 volt rails 28a on two of the rails
Windows Vista ultimate 64
I loaded windows on the bare Raptor and it installed Reboot after install and loaded drivers from CD for chipset. Reboot and installed other drives. Now the fun begins...
I was able to install the Video driver downloaded from nVidia's website. But the system hangs constantly It doesn't matter what your doing driver install, windows update or just looking into drives. It starts the operation then it sits with just the fan running for about 5 or more min. then it starts working again. I haven't found any posts here with a similar problem so it must be something I did. My local store did advise a windows reinstall.
Second problem the RAM is seen by the board as 677 not 800. The manual is very unclear on how to change that. I did pick up some Corsair XMS RAM to use instead of the OCZ to make sure it's not a RAM problem. I also tried 1 stick of RAM as well.
Is there a BIOS setting guide for this board anywhere? Also do I need to update BIOS?
Thanks for any help in advance.

Snowfalcon,
You can go to MSI's website, look in "downloads" and download a complete owners manual in PDF format for the P6N Diamond. It contains a bios guide. As far as the memory..you will probably have to increase the memory voltage in order for the bios to run it at the rated frequency, on my OCZ Platinum 6400s I run it at 2.1 volts to get the 800mhz rating. You may not be able to run all 4 gigs, I recommend using no more than 2 sticks in slots 1 & 3 until you get the OS loaded and running stable. Oh, and dont "enable" the onboard audio until after all other drivers are loaded up. Then you can load the Creative X-Fi drivers and software. These suggestions work for WinXP..there are other threads in this forum concerning/specific to Vista installs. Good luck.

• P7n diamond with q6600

Ok guys, I have an opportunity to get this board for $160 from a buddy of mind. I recently had a q6600 with a 1.3125 vid on a Gigabyte p35-ds3l board that I was able to clock to 3.6ghz stable.
I recently just picked up another q6600 with a 1.2125 vid
A couple of questions for you...
1) Will Crucial Ballistix work on this board?
2) Are there any significant modifications I will need to do to this board to keep the northbridge cool?
3) Are there any common "fsb holes" in this board?
4) Have any of you clocked your quad to 3.6 stable ( I will be using a ultra 120 extreme with ultra kaze fan)
Thanks in advance... I can pick up the board this afternoon if I want, but I'm just wondering how successfull people have clocked the q6600

• MOVED: Microphone not working on P6N Diamond with Windows Vista 32bits Premium

This topic has been moved to Vista problems.
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=114047.0

"What a hassle" doesn't do creative's utter uselessness enough justice.
I don't know what to say except you seem to have done all the right things to try and get your mic working. I've just been through hell and back trying to fix mine. Not just my mic either, if I was in-game or just in Team Speak...video files or music files would not play. Other than that If I was in Team Speak and I loaded up Crysis I would get no sound, and get this... If I loaded up Crysis first and alt-tabbed out to join Team Speak It would say I had no playback or recording device. GOD!
Also apparently there are addressing issues with 64bit systems that have 4GB RAM or more, have to read into it a bit more, sure there are threads in these forums about it.
However for whatever reason, after much stuffing around. I have installed the Vista drivers off the CD (although im running w7 64bit) that came with my card and I'm no longer getting the above issues except now my sound is rediculously soft and so is the bass.
This is what I tried.
. Installed latest drivers from the driver support area.
2. Installed Dan K's support pack
3. Tried booting with 2GB of RAM
4. And lastly which I mentioned worked for some reason...installed vista drivers that came with my card.
Perhaps its worthwhile to install whatever drivers you tried again, but try booting into safemode first and use driver sweeper once you've uninstalled the software/drivers you have at the moment.

• MSI P6N Diamond and very slow BIOS menus

I'm having problems with my new setup. My setup is as follows:
MSI P6N Diamond with 1.1 bios update
2 x OCZ Platinum Revision 2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2P800R22GK
XION Supernova XON 600W Power Supply
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (not overclocked yet, having problems whenever I change settings)
EVGA GeForce 8800GTS 640MB Video Card
I'm running Vista 32bit fine as far as I can tell, everything is pretty snappy and other programs are running fine, but the machine is very slow to post and running the bios menus is a painful process as it takes about 2-4 seconds to switch selections. I tried running the board with 1 stick of ram in slot 1, with slots 1 & 3 and all 4 and it made no difference. I had a USB card reader plugged in and then removing it seemed to make a difference for a while, the BIOS menus ran as I expected, very snappy. Also anytime I switch the CPU clock from automatic to manual the computer won't post and i have to reset the bios
Anyone have a clue what could be causing this slowness and my inability to overclock the cpu?

I will be getting the Q6600 in 1 week, :D. The new G0 stepping as well :D. I'm excited.
Are you using XP or Vista? I have had no distortion or pops with my sound. Although, from what I hear the drivers for XP or much more polished than those for Vista. This is a Creative issue, and not an MSI issue. Lots of people are having problems with Vista with the standalone Creative cards as well.
I overclocked my E6700 to about 3.5Ghz, and hit a temp wall based on my ambient temps. I probably could have gone higher if it was cooler in the room that houses the computer. Although, the temps have dropped dramatically after the AS5 has cured, probably could get it pushed up a bit higher. Hopefully I don't have problems with it when the Q6600 comes in.
If you got the older B3 stepping version, it will run a bit hotter and will be much harder to OC to higher speeds because of this. I've found the P6N Diamond to be very OC friendly and like all the options it gives. The only thing I don't like is the adjustment of the Vcore lists the # above stock, instead of the absolute #. Sometimes the Vcore it auto assigns isn't 100% correct I've heard so it'd be nice to know what that auto value is. The Vcore reading you can read in the monitor section fluctuates a hair in each direction of 1.3 for me when at stock, so I assume it was 1.3 stock.

• P6n diamond - audio is recognized but I still have no sound!

I originally had no sound AND the x-fi wasn't even recognized but then I realized that I had not enabled it on the board so I turned it on in the bios. After that I downloaded the drivers from the Cd that came with the board. Everything on the computer recognizes that the x-fi audio is there and even the little volume test moves like sound is working but I have NO sound AT ALL. I tried every audio port possible(my headphones were verified as working by testing them with a CD player). I Have set the x-fi audio to default also.

• P6N Diamond Issues

My specs are listed in my signature. I have a P6N Diamond with the latest BIOS update, v1.3.
Recently, I have been having problems with my setup.
My IDE devices are no longer detected. I've changed the cable. I've tried different drives and nothing on the IDE bus is detected at all. The IDE controller is enabled in the BIOS. The BIOS doesn't detect the devices at all either.
I am unable to shutdown my computer. Once the OS is finished shutting down, the screen goes black but the motherboard stays fully powered. 80% of the time, I can't get the comp off by holding down the power switch on the case. I have to use the power switch on the PSU to get it powered off. If I hit the power switch on the case while it's behaving like this, it sounds like it's power cycling and it goes through the sequence as per the reading on the D bracket.
I have tried re-flashing the BIOS as I thought that the problem was that the BIOS may have gotten corrupted. This failed to produce any positive results.
My problem almost sounds like the one that this user was experiencing:-

The only recent changes that I have made was to replace my PS/2 Keyboard and Mouse with USB ones. I tried plugging back up the PS/2 ones but that didn't seem to help much. Do I need to reset the CMOS after re-adding the PS/2 devices? Or is there some other solution to this problem?
Any help to figure this out would be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Okay, so you've set the Power Management for the power button in the BIOS to off/on, correct? Have you also set in windows' Power Options? What operating system are we discussing here? Is the power button in Windows' Power Options set to turn OFF the computer?
Do an experiment for me. Turn off the computer. If this means putting it to sleep and then turning off the PSU, so be it. With the computer completely turned off(pulling the plug if necessary and then re-plugging and turning on the PSU), boot up the computer and rapidly hit the DEL key to get into the bios. Once you are in the bios, check to ensure that the power button is set to Off. If it is not, set it to off and save and exit--then start from the beginning of this paragraph, "Turn off the computer" again. Check that the setting stuck, power button to off. If it is set to off, hit the power button now--this should shut down the computer. If this shuts down the computer, your problem is OS based and not hardware.
I performed the instructions. The power button is still putting the computer into sleep mode.
One interesting thing that I did note is that when I reset from the BIOS interface to "Optimized Defaults", the BIOS can detect all SATA and all USB devices that are connected to the motherboard. Before this problem arised, the BIOS could only detect one single USB storage device that was connected to the motherboard. I could have 2 USB storage devices connected to the motherboard and only one would show up in the F11 Boot interface. I was perplexed by this initially but never paid too much mind to it.
I think that the motherboard itself is botched. I think that the IDE interface on the motherboard is dead. I can even unplug the hard drives connected via IDE while an OS is booted and the system won't crash at all.
Thanks a lot for all the help guys. It's very much appreciated.

• QX6850 on P6N Diamond Requires Update

Hey Guys,
I had a problem earlier today when building my system and I wanted to post it here so it can help anyone else.
Even though the motherboard advertises that it supports 1333mhz processors, just with the new version of BIOS supports it. Plus, the new G0 stepping id was added to the BIOS version.
I got my QX6850 in the mail today and couldn't wait to install it. Unfortunately, I had a problem from the start. Here are my symptoms:
Turning on the computer would start all fans, but nothing more. Neither did the 4 communication LED lights on the USB hub work.
After hitting the CMOS reset button a few times and restarting the computer, finally i got some action. It loaded to the CPU Initialization screen. It recognized the processor but gave me a "CMOS CHECKSUM BAD" error. I tried to press F1 to enter setup, but there was no response.
That's as far as I ever got, so I called up tech support. They think the bios update should fix this. Unfortunately, I don't have another 775 processor to update, so I have to send it in. Probably will take 5-7 days before I get it back, because I live close and its merely an update.
Will let you guys know if this new BIOS will fix this problem.
Thanks,

You don't need to. As it is a board with a sli chipset MSI has to add a bridge. The reminder doesn't pertain to the bridge. Any retail MSI board with sli chipset comes with a bridge, no matter the area where it is sold.
Because nVidia don't ship SLI bridges with their cards.

• Why are some websites displayed with added question marks inside black diamonds

Numbers are displayed with question marks inside black triangles before and following, possibly as column separators.
== This happened ==

== I attempted to access financial websites

Can you post a link?
You can try a few different encoding settings: "View > Character Encoding" like Western ISO-8859-1 or another Western encoding or UTF-8
You can also try to switch on Auto-Detect: "View > Character Encoding > AutoDetect > Universal"
A diamond with a '?' usually indicates that a character is missing in the font that is used on a website or the wrong encoding is used.
You get the '?' on websites that use an 8 bit encoding like ISO-8859-1 or a Windows encoding like Windows-1252.
This issue can happen if content was copied from one 8 bit or Unicode encoding to another encoding.

• Firefox is not displaying alt codes correctly, substituting a black diamond with a white question mark in their place.

Alt codes (such as ® for "registered" and ™ for "trademark") are being displayed as a small black diamond with a white question mark inside of it. This has also started happening to more simple characters such as exclamation marks, dashes and apostrophes.
Any ideas?

Thanks for your reply cor-el.
My posting actually included the alt code syntax, and is now rendered as the corresponding special character. I guess this isn't a surprise!
And no, it was rendered just fine. This morning when I went into the browser to see the problem, it was not mis-displaying as it had been...it had somehow changed and was behaving very nicely. That's all fine, but I'm a little bit wary of this FF browser functionality now...steady as she goes.
Also, I did check the (View > Character Encoding) you recommended, and after experimenting a bit discovered that using "Unicode (UTF-8)" made the wierd black diamond/white question mark character come back in all of the same places it was occuring...up until this morning. I've set my browser default to "Western (ISO-8859-1)" now, and everything is displaying as it should.
Thanks for your reply and suggestions. I hope others will learn from these experiences.

• Have started seeing diamonds with question marks on FireFox (and Chrome); changed encoding, made no difference.

Both FireFox and Google Chrome (but not Internet Explorer) have been showing black diamonds with question marks in them for some time. It's not an encoding issue, as changing character encoding doesn't work. I don't know what caused it, as it all of a sudden started out of the blue. My network.http. in about:config are all default. I've tried scanning for malware, including in safe mode with the internet disconnected. Nothing has made a difference. Please help me, as this problem is incredibly hard to Google and I have no idea what to do.

Windows will see it, and says it works, but it wont detect any wireless networks. My Sound Card works fine, it is also in a PCI slot like the Wireless Card, so I'm wondering what else I need to tweak to make my peripherals working.
