P6N SLI + 4x1GB Slowdowns FIXED

Hi,
I was one of the happy few that are struggling to get my 4x 1 gb sticks (kingston hyperX 6400 DDR2) working proparly on my P6N. I saw many of you struggle with this so my post might help you out.
Short description of my problem:
With 2x 1GB installed my system(vista 64 Ultimate) worked fine, however 2GB of ram seems fairly too less for vista 64 so i bought additional 2GB (2X 1GB of EXACTLY the same brand & type). After installing the additional 2 sticks of ram my system suffered a HUGE lack of performance(Vista boot time +5 min). My problem was exactly  like discribed in this topic:
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=106168.0
So, i first updated my bios to the latest version and tested ALL possible bios settings regarding memory timings etc....still no-go after this.
To fix the issue i examined the nemory modules with CPUZ and figured the only difference was the production date of the memory modules.
So i got:
2 x 1GB sticks with production date: 4(week)2007
2 x 1GB sticks with production date: 13(week)2007
Putting the sticks in a special sequence into the memory slot  FIXED THE PROBLEM:
SLOT(COLOR)                      MEMORY STICK PRODUCTION DATE
1(GREEN CHANNEL A)            04-2007
2(ORANGE CHANNEL B)          04-2007
3(GREEN CHANNEL A)            13-2007
4(ORANGE CHANNEL B)          13-2007
So generally we can say[if you have pairs of stics that differ in production date]:
DO NOT PUT 2 STICKS WITH THE SAME PRODUCTION DATE IN ONE CHANNEL!!!!

Yeah, that's wierd.
Seems like you would want to run like modules in the same channel, not a mixed pair.
I was reading an old article about DDR vs. DDR2 with the Athlon CPUs when DDR2 first began to be implemented on AMD mobos. I was wondering if there has been much discussion about the ability to run 4 GB at 1T command rate with the C2D and current mobos. Or is everyone pretty much resigned to 2T Cmd Rate? NovJoe, have you seen any traffic like that?
From what I've read, at DDR-800 it's difficult to maintain 1T with only 2GB installed. Thus the loose timings we see nowdays.

  • Core 2 Quad Q8400 Problem (P6N SLI Platinum) [FIXED]

Hello, I recently bought an Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 with the understanding that my P6N SLI Platinum will support Yorkfield cores, given I have the latest BIOS. I updated my BIOS to 1.6, yet it just hangs on the MSI screen and will not POST. I just want to know if I indeed do have the latest BIOS, and if so, if there's anything I or MSI can do to remedy this problem. I really don't have enough money for a new mobo or CPU, and I'm going to be extremely irritated if I just wasted $170 on this... Thanks in advance.

I'm here for help and complain, no msi is not supposed to know what will be intel releases, but  i think they can fix the problem by releasing a new bios or simply put on the boxes models when writing that it support this or that technology
if you searched a little on msi.com you would have ended up here:
    www.msi.com/index.php?func=prodcpu2&prod_no=1140&maincat_no=1
here it says what  CPU 's the board can run.
so MSI does say, what you can use, but it doesnt say on the box, cause it changes all the time, so they keep an online list.
and no, they cant write a new BIOS, its a chipset limitation from the NVIDIA chipset that cant be overcome by BIOS update unfortunatly.
I would go for a cheap P45 board, they can almost run all s775 CPU's and its newer then the P6N.

  • P6N SLI Platinum & E8500 NO-GO !(FIXED!!)

    Hi,
After my troubles with the P6N SLI V1.0, i went out for a board that should support my E8500.
    Also see my previous topic:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=114548.0
So now i have installed a P6N Platinum (bios v1.5) witch "should" support the E8500, asuming the info here is correct:
     http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=prodcpusupport&prod_no=1140&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=170&cat3_no=#menu
Unfortunally the E8500 STILL refuse to boot, no matter what i try.
    - No post screen,
    - No error beeps
    - No keyboard leds ligtning up
    - No indicators on the D bracket
The board works flawless when i put in a E 6600
The E8500 is tested on a Maximus.
Anything i might have overseen ?

    It defnatly does:
Taipei, Taiwan – Micro-Star International (MSI), one of the world-renowned designers and manufacturers of high-quality mainboards, announces its P6N series (680i/650i-based) mainboard will support 45nm Wolfdale (Dual Core) CPUs with an upcoming BIOS update. 45nm Yorkfield (Quad Core) CPUs will be supported on upcoming nForce 700-series SLI mainboards.
I agree that a p35 board probably will support the E8500 but since i use a OEM vista i would use that as LAST option.
At this point, if the E8500 is truly unsupported by the P6N boards, the information currently displayed on MSI's web is  very misleading for the end user. Many ppl might be looking for this board as an upgrade to a E8*** series processor.
    will support
That's the clincher.......... does not say it does support or when it will support.......
Have you tried checking Nvidia for chipset news updates, as it's Nvidia who really control, what does and does not run.......

I recently purchased a bunch of new parts to build my new computer.
    MSI P6N SLI
    6750 core 2 duo
    EVGA 8800GT OC
    G.skill 4GB (2 x 2gb sticks)
430W PSU *yes with enough amps for the card.. 3 12v rails totals 30+amps
The problem im having is the card isnt picking up the monitor signal.  I dont get the 3 bleeps or whatever that lets you know either the card is dead or the socket is dead so it cant be that.
Any ideas.. im pretty confident everything is working as all fans come on.. lights on MB come on as well as the fan on the 8800GT..
    Please help im lost.
    Thanks.

Unfortunately i dont have another card to try.. although i plan to go to a friends house later today and see if it works on his comp.
I've hooked up my 4pin connector as well as the 24pin
I have a 6pin pci-e from my psu connected as well.
I've tried using one stick of RAM and tested all Dimm slotts.
I used the x16 PCI-e slot for my 8800gt.. the x8 is empy.. and SLI card is facing the right direction for single card mode.
Also how do i update my bios if i dont have access to a cpu that it supports in its previous bios.. i JUST bought this MB from newegg and would assume it'd be up to date with the current bios.. *least i'd hope*

  • P6N SLI Platinum not booting after CPU change

I just upgraded the CPU in my machine with a P6N SLI Platinum motherboard from a E6700 to an E8500.  I first upgraded the BIOS to 1.7 as the MSI page seemed to indicate that was a pre-req for this CPU.  The machine was working fine for a day with the new CPU.
I changed the CPU in the machine and when I tried to boot, the lights on the motherboard came on as well as the fan, but no video or sound.  In addition none of the diagnostic LEDs on the D Bracket light up.  They had been previously working.  Neither do the lights on my memory sticks light up.
I tried clearing the CMOS by hitting the switch but nothing.  I am now going to try switching back CPUs but I don't have much hope that that is the problem given the diagnostic LEDs don't light.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to a fix or is this motherboard fried?
P.S.  Do you hit hte CMOS clear switch when the computer is off but the motherboard is charged? Or do you unplug the computer and wait for the internal orange light to go out as well too?

What is the QC number (by the cpu socket) is 01, 02, or 03?
     See this thread for more:
     https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php/topic,123486.msg932471.html#msg932471
Ah. Given I bought my P6N SLI Platinum 3.5 years ago when they first came out I imagine mine is one of the older versions that doesn't support 45nm CPUs by default.  Is there a photo somewhere showing where the QC number is located exactly on this MB?  It's probably located under my huge CPU heatsink and I'm not going to remove that for a third time just to check.
I really wish the MSI CPU compatibility page mentioned that. It would save me a lot of time.  It's not worth my time and effort to dismantle my PC, send them the MB and wait for them to send me back a compatible one.
I verified the BIOS upgrade by looking at the version number at startup and using CPUZ.

I tried with different brands, different loads but i got nothing out of it!
By that you mean different brands and loads of RAM or BIOS?
Loads as in BIOS load, RAM configuration (amount), or load on the operating system?
-EDIT-Also, which model of 'P6N SLI' do you have? The BIOS is not the same between the various (5) models, though you may be able to flash the wrong BIOS to your system and remain operational.
As AaronYuri stated, with only three DIMMs installed you negate dual channel operation so, though I don't know when and by how much, you will therefore take a hit in memory performance. You can increase RAM and FSB speeds to the maximum FSB of the chipset and CPU though (3GB linear surely exceeds the bandwidth of the C55). If you can't buy a matching DIMM to make it an even 4GB and want to run linear, you just need to set the 'System Clock Mode' to 'Manual' in the BIOS 'Cell' menu. Then set your desired 'Memory Clock' speed. For defaults on these boards it would be 'FSB Clock' - 1066, 'Memory Clock' - 533. However, you could easily run 1333|667 on your E6420 and RAM. Or even 1333|800, 1500|750 or 800.
Correct me if I'm wrong, guys. The selection under 'Memory clock' is DDR, so dual or linear operation has no bearing on the setting.
When troubleshooting, or even on initial build, you should identify and isolate each individual problem as much as possible. Address only one component/problem at a time, making only one correction at a time, till it is fixed/correctly installed. Then move on to the next component installation/problem.
And as Maseus would tell you, read the 'Moan Guide'.

2 gig works fine gets a rating of 5.0 on vista but when 3gig is installed 4.5 is my rating when this should be 5.9. Now by looking at other threads people where able to fix this out with a beta/newer bio's but i never saw anythin on the V2 board. I was unsure on which one i need to get so that why iam starting this as a way to get the correct bios so i can use all my memory at 800mhz and not 399mhz as told by CPUIZ!
    Any Help is welcomed help!

CPUZ regonize memory at being 800mhz
Don't confuse memory type and memory speed.  CPU-Z might have recognized your modules as DDR2-800 modules (and it most likely still does) but it is impossible that it told you that your RAM was operating @800 MHz (because that would equal DDR2-1600 MHz). Impossible.

    BINGO! Read here:

    The bottom line:
    Quote
VISTA has rather an illogical performance rating tool.
Don't trust those ratings.  You sleep better that way.
    Quote
nother thing is that the FSB : DRAM ratio is 2:3 surely this should be 1:1?
No, if the ratio would be set to 1:1 your RAM would be operating @266 MHz [=DDR2-533].
2:3 equals 1:1.5, your CPU operates @266 MHz FSB clock speed, that means
    266 MHz x 1.5 = 400 MHz [DDR2-800 MHz] memory clock speed.
BTW: If your memory really was operating at only half of its rated speed, your memory score would be a lot less.

  • P6N SLI Platinum Reboots on Cold Start

I have the noted board with an E6750 CPU and 4GB of RAM. Problem also occurred when I only had 2GB of RAM.
When I cold boot, even if the machine has only been turned off a minute or two, the system boots and loads correctly, but after 3-4 minutes it will shut down. No messages, no warning, just black screen. If I immediately flip the power switch and bring it back up the system boots and loads then runs perfectly - until I shut it down again.
Any ideas on what could be causing this? I've had the problem since the day I built the system. Boots, shuts down after a few minutes, then boots and runs forever. I've installed a new hard drive with a fresh OS install and the problem remained. I've installed a different video card (same drivers) and  the problem remained.
This isn't a show-stopper, it just tweaks me that I can't isolate and fix the problem. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

As an update, I installed a Corsair 750W PSU. Still have the problem. Thing is, while installing the PSU I heard the BIOS beep four times on a cold boot. After it warmed up and shut down I rebooted again. That time, only the single BIOS beep. I shut down again, let it get cold, rebooted - and got 4 beeps once again. After it booted and shut down I immediately rebooted, got just the single beep and - as usual - the system was stable.
What I read about BIOS beeps is that 4 short ones mean there's a memory or motherboard problem. I ran MEMTEST and there were no memory errors, so I'm guessing the problem is the motherboard.
But I did get a new PSU out of the deal!
    System Specs:

  • P6n SLI PLATINUM bios v1.2

So I upgraded to 4gb ram finally, and have got it to work without errors in dimm slots 2 and 4, and have been having performance issues such as slow loading, stuttering in games, and just in general slowdown with loading up applications, but absolutely no crashes or freezes of any kind, no BSODs or anything else that would be hardware related I assume.
Defragged, fresh install of windows 7, video card drivers updated and everything else checks out fine. The only thing I can think of is that over in HardForum doing a google search brought me to this post:http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1164174 with issues related to 4gb on the mainboard having slowdowns with older bios versions.
Seeing as how this is relevant to me getting new memory, my patriot memory gave out with BSODs so I was forced to upgrade but had way better performance with just 2gb stick of ram (even in win7).
Should I do a bios update?
    Specs:
    EVGA 8800gts 540mb 195.62 driver
    4gb A-Data ram 5-5-5-12 2t clock, 1.9v
    Windows 7 64-bit
    Bios v1.2 A7350NMS P6N SLI Platinum Socket LGA-775
    Core2duo E6600 @2.4ghz
I haven't really done much upgrading since I purchased this a few years back, and quite surprised to see the hit and stuttering in performance in games all of a sudden after upgrading to new ram, and the ram tested out fine for 3 days straight doing multiple passes with memtest 4.0. I tried doing it in DIMM slots 1 and 3 but have been getting errors, maybe I've got a bad board?
Quite confused as to what step I need to take next, thanks for any help!

  • P6N SLI Platinum (MS-7350) BIOS issue

I RMA'ed my P6N SLI Platinum MS-7350 and got back another identical board. However, this one has BIOS 2.7 in it. Bios 2.7 according to MSI page on this board is actually for the P6N SLI (also a MS-7350). The latest BIOS for the Platinum is 1.7. Im confused. Should I reflash it to 1.7 so that it has the proper BIOS instead of a BIOS from the P6N SLI not platinum? I know I have the platinum because the box says so AND the board has the copper heat piping across it unlike the MSI picture of the SLI (non-plat).

Quote from: TeachDJ on 05-January-10, 01:15:33
I have those: eSata, Firewire, and SPDIF port on this board yet, BIOS is currently flashed at 2.7 as mentioned. Thanks.
Then they clearly did return the Platinum board to you, as the P6N does not have those extras.
And (apparently) the v2.7 BIOS works with the Platinum as well as the plain P6N. Fascinating. Maybe you want to contact Tech Support about it, but if it's working--why are you concerned?
I'm interested because my P7N Platinum has a v1.3 BIOS, and (like your P6N) the lesser-capability board, the P7N, is up to BIOS v2.2. So I have wondered "Why is the simpler board getting more recent updates than the more sophisticated one?" But my system is working perfectly--it ain't broke so I don't need to fix it!

So I purchased an e8400 processor after the 1.6 BIOS update came out for my P6N SLI Platinum, got it yesterday.  I put the processor in and it didn't work .  I turned to Google to have the internet fix the issue, and it seems if I adjust some options in my BIOS, it may make the e8400 work.  Two of the things it said to change were EIST and C1E.  I went into my BIOS, and tried hitting F4 in the CPU menu to get C1E to show up, but it won't.  The EIST option is no where to be found either...
Anyone else running into the same issue, or got a e8400 to work after changing stuff in the BIOS?
    Thanks a lot!
EDIT:  Forgot to post my system specs
    Mobo: P6N SLI Platinum
    CPU:  Intel Pentium D 930
    RAM 2GB (1GB x2) Patriot DDR 667 (PC 5300)
    GPU: eVGA nVidia GeForce 8800GT
    PSU: Thermaltake 500W

I used that bios, but on my regular p6n sli and got it to work.  here is my topic on it

Dont clear the bios after you take out the old cpu or it wont work
I have been tinkering with it all day just to see what the actual problem is and it doesnt seem that it is the EIST OR C1E. from what I have done it seems that it is a problem with the voltages that keeps it from booting. If you change those with the other cpu in and then save and exit.  Dont let it reboot, shut it off before it starts to boot up again and put the e8400 in
