P6N SLI (not plat) 8x PCIE SLI

I'm looking into getting another video card to run in SLI. With the non plat P6N, when you have SLI the slots run at 8x. I was wondering how much performance i was losing with it at 8x not 16x.
Thanks.

  • P6N SLI Plat and floppy drive not working

System says the floppy drive works fine, but I put in a disc and it doesn't recognize it.  All I get is, "Please insert disc".
Windows says that drivers are up to date.
I really need to get it working so I can do a fresh OS install with raid drivers on the floppy.
I think im just retarded, or both my floppy drives are dead... or both my floppy discs are dead.
    Any ideas?

From what I'm reading it sounds like you are able to boot to Windows at the moment right?
If so, why not skip using a floppy disk to load driver, and just slipstream your RAID drivers into a Windows install CD?
There are tutorials all over the web to do this, here's a good one:
    http://www.maximumpc.com/article/How-To--Slipstream-your-XP-installation
Regarding your floppy issue, it's very possible for your floppies to be dead. Almost all of mine that I have around are toast by the time I get around to using them.
If you're dead set on using a floppy to load your RAID drivers, go buy a couple new floppies and see if you still have the same problem. If so, then you're a new $14 floppy drive away from solving your problem...

  • MSI P6N SLI V2 does not boot up from cd/dvd and few other problems

    HI
I just bought a computer P6N SLI V2 + E6750. It has following problem. It does not boot from cd.
I have Sata HD. CD/DVD is installed to IDE as a master.
I have done settings in bios so that First boot is cd/dvd and second is sata HD. Anyhow it still goes to the hd and stars windows.
I was only able to boot up from cd when I disabled hd from boot sequency. Meaning I left only cd/dvd there.
Hopefully you pro's can help me.
Then there is another problem. Windows is telling me that it found new pci device. I do not know what device. I have only Graphig card (geforce 8800 gts) installed into pci-E. Drivers and software are also installed, I assume proberly. How to find out what windows thinks it found.
Third problem is onboard soundcard. I cannot get any sound out from the machine. I have downloaded driver from realtek, but still no sound.
Unfortunatelly I do not have original software for motherboard. Only the latest from MSI website.
    Hopefully someone can help me.
    thanks.

About bootup, i dont know yet.
To find out what windows found, look in devicemanager.
To go there go to controlpanel, system then choose devicemanager.
There you can see what's installed.
Last, your soundcards needs to be enabled in bios, under integrated peripherals there should be a line with "onboard sound", enable this and sound should work, unless its broken.

Maximum temperature at the junction point (where the die is glued to the chip carrier inside). Max temp is 100°C for Allendale and 85°C for conroe. The internal sensor coretemp uses does not return a absolute temperature but rather how many C° is left until Tjunction is reached. So to calculate the temperature they use Tjunction - Sensor Reading = Temperature. You can see here how speedfan's wrong assumption of 85°C for allendale creates a 15°C offset.

  • P6N SLI Platinum not booting after CPU change

I just upgraded the CPU in my machine with a P6N SLI Platinum motherboard from a E6700 to an E8500.  I first upgraded the BIOS to 1.7 as the MSI page seemed to indicate that was a pre-req for this CPU.  The machine was working fine for a day with the new CPU.
I changed the CPU in the machine and when I tried to boot, the lights on the motherboard came on as well as the fan, but no video or sound.  In addition none of the diagnostic LEDs on the D Bracket light up.  They had been previously working.  Neither do the lights on my memory sticks light up.
I tried clearing the CMOS by hitting the switch but nothing.  I am now going to try switching back CPUs but I don't have much hope that that is the problem given the diagnostic LEDs don't light.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to a fix or is this motherboard fried?
P.S.  Do you hit hte CMOS clear switch when the computer is off but the motherboard is charged? Or do you unplug the computer and wait for the internal orange light to go out as well too?

What is the QC number (by the cpu socket) is 01, 02, or 03?

Ah. Given I bought my P6N SLI Platinum 3.5 years ago when they first came out I imagine mine is one of the older versions that doesn't support 45nm CPUs by default.  Is there a photo somewhere showing where the QC number is located exactly on this MB?  It's probably located under my huge CPU heatsink and I'm not going to remove that for a third time just to check.
I really wish the MSI CPU compatibility page mentioned that. It would save me a lot of time.  It's not worth my time and effort to dismantle my PC, send them the MB and wait for them to send me back a compatible one.
I verified the BIOS upgrade by looking at the version number at startup and using CPUZ.

  • P6N SLI with intel core 2 duo e7500 does not post

A EVGA G4orce 9600Gt 512mb video card. I recently bought a intel core 2 duo e7500. When the e7500 is installed fans spin up but no video. When The sl9kn is installed everything functions normally. I had the e7500 tested and it posts fine in other motherboards but not in my p6n sli. Everything functions normal with the sl9kn. I know this because im using the system to write this post =). I cleared the cmos per the manual and updated the bios as well but still no changes with the e7500(intel) cpu. The e7500 is in the compatability list on the msi site. I am all but convinced this is a compatability issue with something else i have installed. The only thing that was changed was the cpu to the e7500 and nothing else was touched. Since the system functions normally with my old cpu (sl9kn) i have put it back in for now. Any help or ideas on this problem would be greatly appreciated.

If im correct you referring to possibly replacing the socket so the cpu fits the board and the pin count is the same. If so this has already been checked and the cpu fits the board pins and all. Considering the board is only a few months old and the cpu and the board both are socket lga775 the only real difference is the one being used is 65nm and the e7500 is 45nm. The board was designed with core 2 duos in mind wich nearly all of them are 45nm. The board also supports quad cores wich are 45nm. The only other thing I have noticed is my ram is not on the list of modules tested to be ok on the board. The techs where I bought the board were baffled as to why it wont post but if the revision number will help the board version is 1.0 The only other thing left to do is swap ram. As before though everything functions until the cpu is changed. MSI and Intel both have told me the board supports the e7500 even version 1.0
No im not referring to the pins, I know its LGA775.
Im referring to a parts update, extra chip, to make sure 45nm dualcores work.
45nm Quads are not going to work, nor will they ever on this board.
    Read here for cpu compatibiltylist:
    http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=prodcpu2&prod_no=1141&maincat_no=1
The only possibility is to send it in, since your board has revision 1.0

I have the somewhat more expensive version of your board, the P6N SLi Platinum and have the same issue and since the chipset is identical, you also have to upgrade.
This is all due to chipset limitations and thus an NVidia issue, since they provided the chipset, (this said before going to bash/complain/rant about MSI  ).
    Edit:
    This board was made/designed pre 45nm cpu's and made/designed for 65nm cpu's.
Now they are mostly 45nm, when the board was made, 65nm was common and 45nm was still under development.
That you bought the board new, a couple of months ago, doesnt say anything about its production date or about its support for cpu's, it could have been on the shelf for a long time.

  • P6n sli platinum NB fan -included or not

    hello all
    First post
-been viewing the site for ocing tips and such, currently running my p6n sli platinum with a e4300 @ 2.8ghz on stock colling and stock voltage, thanks to all that posted about bios settings etc. But thats neither here nor there.
    But heres my problem:
So i didnt get a NB fan in my mobo box.. but a google on p6n sli platinum northbridge fan hits TONS of resellers and reviews of the board all saying its in there.
*and by tons i mean almost every result for pages..
so i called msi and they told me they dont make one.. then they said they make it for other boards and it fits this one, but it doesnt come with the board.. then they told me they did make them but dont stock them.. then they told me its an optional item and it can be ordered for 7$ plus shipping. So i told them that all the review sites and resellers say its there and they just said, no, its option and its 7$ plus shipping and that is their "final answer".
So... Did everyone get a fan or not? i realy want to know whats going on, newegg states that its part of the accessories, but since it doesnt list it as an accessory on msis official msicomputer.com site they tell me its not included and they know that its not because its not on the site. (for the record none of their boards list removable nb fans on the site and i know of a few that DO have it) I just want to see whats going on here.
So to all p6n sli platinum owners: Did you get a NB fan in your retail package?
    Thanks

Mine came with one. I used it for a day and yanked it. It is WAY too loud - like louder than my case fan, CPU fan and GPU fan combined. You'd have to be stone cold deaf for me to recommend this cooler. It really is that bad.

  • P6N sli platinum not working

    Hi all,
I have a problem, i bought my self a P6N sli platinum, so i installed it but it doesnt work:(
I am not getting any vga signal, i know i installed it alright but it isnt working.
I think its my cpu it might not be working with this P6N, i hope anyone can confirm this, because when i check the CPU support at the MSI site it says its compatible.
    I got a : Pentium 4,  3.2 mhz 640  2m/800fsb
I hope i get an answer because i have to return the P6N in 5 days, if it isnt working.
    thx

Core 2 Duo will perform WAY BETTER than Pentium 4. It is 100% compatible to Pentium 4. Do you know what Pentium 4 model number you have?
    Pentium 4,  3.2 mhz
    640  <--this is the model number http://www.intel.com/products/processor_number/chart/pentium4.htm
    2m/800fsb
O yes and non of the lights on the D-Bracket go on, the green light and orange light on the P6N are on.

  • Followup-- MSI P6N SLI Platinum does not work with E8400

I am just following up like I said I would... and the *RMA'ed* E8400 still fails to post with a BIOS updated (v1.6) P6N SLI Platinum. It works fine with an E4500... but not the E8400. MSI really shouldn't say it's compatible when it's not. I am going to send the board back to Directron and replace it with the new Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3L. Very unhappy with MSI right now and probably won't buy from them again. I'm going to stick with another gigabyte for now. Anything I can do before sending it back tonight? I am very disappointed, especially because this really is a perfect board for me.

You can drop MSI an email to see if you are able to get an engineering BIOS to try out.

    According to this:
    http://global.msi.eu/index.php?func=prodcpu2&prod_no=1141&maincat_no=1&orderby=cpu_name%20ASC#menu
"Yorkfield" 45nm quadcores are not going to work on this board, only "wolfdale" 45nm dualcores and even that depends on revision, like Jack mentioned.
So your Q8200 is a no go unfortunatly.
Only the older 65nm "Conroe" quads will work.
and fastest intel processor (not 45nm quad core) ?

  • P6N Sli Plat. and Wolfdale

Hi...does anyone know for sure if the P6N Sli Plat. can use the E8400 or E8500?  According to the compatibility list, either "stepping" version of either cpu is compatible if your board has Bios ver. 1.7.  But still I am cautious about buying one of those cpu's since I can't seem to find on forums where somebody has done this successfully (with 1 exception where they played with voltages and all that).  In fact even since bios 1.7 I still only read about people trying it without success.
    Thanks

Going sli with those gts will help when the going gets tough and deliver more frames per second for a smoother gaming expierence. Those new nvidia drivers havent made any difference as far as i can tell. I see youre using klipsch speakers good choice there is no better option in my mind for i own a set of chorus 2s for my stereo and a huge klipsch fan, nothing makes the neighbors hate you more than rattling knick knacks off thier shelves in the houses around me.
