P6N SLI Plat and g92 sli question

Do any of you guys with this mb run it in sli with the new g92 nvidia cards and if so what kind of results did you get?  I'm very tempted to get another evga gts 512 and run it in sli however I'm concerned about the scaling in vista 64 and I'd like to hear from others who might have already done this.  I really haven't seen any benchmarks using this mb so I'm looking for some personal experiences to use as a guide.  I considered swapping mb's however if this one will yield good results I might try it first before spending more money.  Thanks.
Edit:  I looked at the sale ad one minute too long and have already ordered it with overnight shipping.  I should get it tomorrow and once installed I'll let you guys know how it goes.  I'm sure that it won't be long before a new sli mb finds its way into my pc.

Going sli with those gts will help when the going gets tough and deliver more frames per second for a smoother gaming expierence. Those new nvidia drivers havent made any difference as far as i can tell. I see youre using klipsch speakers good choice there is no better option in my mind for i own a set of chorus 2s for my stereo and a huge klipsch fan, nothing makes the neighbors hate you more than rattling knick knacks off thier shelves in the houses around me.

  • P6N Sli Plat. and Wolfdale

Hi...does anyone know for sure if the P6N Sli Plat. can use the E8400 or E8500?  According to the compatibility list, either "stepping" version of either cpu is compatible if your board has Bios ver. 1.7.  But still I am cautious about buying one of those cpu's since I can't seem to find on forums where somebody has done this successfully (with 1 exception where they played with voltages and all that).  In fact even since bios 1.7 I still only read about people trying it without success.
    Thanks

  • P6N SLI Plat and floppy drive not working

System says the floppy drive works fine, but I put in a disc and it doesn't recognize it.  All I get is, "Please insert disc".
Windows says that drivers are up to date.
I really need to get it working so I can do a fresh OS install with raid drivers on the floppy.
I think im just retarded, or both my floppy drives are dead... or both my floppy discs are dead.
    Any ideas?

    2x1 seagate 320's

From what I'm reading it sounds like you are able to boot to Windows at the moment right?
If so, why not skip using a floppy disk to load driver, and just slipstream your RAID drivers into a Windows install CD?
There are tutorials all over the web to do this, here's a good one:
    http://www.maximumpc.com/article/How-To--Slipstream-your-XP-installation
Regarding your floppy issue, it's very possible for your floppies to be dead. Almost all of mine that I have around are toast by the time I get around to using them.
If you're dead set on using a floppy to load your RAID drivers, go buy a couple new floppies and see if you still have the same problem. If so, then you're a new $14 floppy drive away from solving your problem...

  • Question regarding P6N SLI Platinum CPU support?

I went to the product page list on the main MSI website and it lists the Kentsfield CPUs, but I happen to have an Intel Yorkfield Q9450 CPU. The question is, will this motherboard support that CPU or will it only support the ones listed on the product page?
I have the P6N SLI Platinum mainboard and recently got my hands on the Q9450 chip and would like to swap out CPUs with the Core 2 Duo E6700 that is in there now - anyone know if I can or not? The product page says that a CPU with a FSB of 1333 has to have that set manually in the BIOS, which I am willing to do, just need to know if this mainboard will even support the CPU I want to put into it.
    Thanks!

Nuts, that's what I was afraid of...I was thinking that since the product page specifies a CPU with a FSB of 1333 (which the Q9450 has) it would be compatible.
Thanks for the answers - looks like I can't re-use my mobo, time for a new one.

  • MediaShield RAID 5 implementation on a P6N SLI Platinum plus boot question

    Hi guys
I have a P6N SLI Platinum I am considering using to replace my old decrepit Thecus N4100+ NAS enclosure. My NAS has four 750Gb SATA II drives in RAID 5 giving a total usable amount of about 2Tb.
I have a few questions please:
What is the maximum size RAID that MediaShield will support? I seem to recall reading somewhere it was 1.6Tb? This is a problem with 3Tb storage (1/4 redundancy)!!
What is the performance like running RAID 5? What are the read/write times like?
How much of a performance hit does the PC take running RAID 5 with MediaShield? This box has an E5500 quad core 4*2.8Ghz chip but is running some very hungry software (one build is a DAW based on Cubase and various VSTs; another is running Photoshop CS3) which I can't afford to be tied up sorting out low level RAID stuff if it's going to be a problem. Can I dedicate one of my four cores to the XOR for the RAID 5 freeing up the other three for actual PC stuff?
There is currently one SATA drive already in this box containing the OS. If I use the four SATA ports for the MediaShield RAID and buy a 3rd party PCI/PCIE SATA controller card to plug this current drive into will I be able to set it to boot from it or do I need to migrate the drive to an IDE drive and put it on the IDE chain?
Many thanks in advance you guys.
    Cheers

    Where do I start?
    I have a E5500, it's a dual core chip.
Second, media shield sucks. Don't use it unless absolutely necessary.
Buy a pci-e 1x 'firmware' card, I use the RocketRaid 2300 cards, good and cheap. Good, usable  RAID5.
They have a performance advantage, a load time advantage, cpu utilization advantage, and most importantly, if you want to migrate your array over to another motherboard, you can. Easily.
If your mobo dies, and you replace it with a more current one, your array is toast with mediashield.\
Boot from a motherboard sata port. Don't boot from a RAID 5 array, trust me.

  • P6N SLI Platinum and E8400 Wolfdale

I see on the site that this combination is still "Under Testing", but is anyone here running this combo successfully with the 1.5 Bios?  Also, does anyone know if it will even boot on the 1.4 Bios?  I want to purchase this combo but am worried that if I get a board with 1.4 I won't be able to boot it and I don't have a spare processor to be able to boot and then flash to 1.5 (assuming this will work with 1.5).

To be honest I haven't seen that many doa p6n plat's.
Sure there were some troubles, but mostly they can be fixed, especially with latest bios, everything is fine and dandy with my mobo.
Dont worry and just wait most of the owners are very happy with the p6n sli plat.

  • P6N SLI / power supply question

I have a question to pose to the experts. I am building a computer for a friend. He brought me the parts to work on. The motherboard is the MSI P6N SLI and the power supply he brought me is a KWi KingWin Model AP-450 with the following specs:
    +3.3V - 22A
    +5V - 35A
    +12V - 15A
    -12V - .8A
    -5V - .5A
    +5VSB - 3A
    Total - 450W
The system will contain 2 hard drives, one Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm 80GB SATA the other a Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm 40GB IDE.
It will also have a SATA DVD burner and a XFX GeForce 8600 video card which does not have a power input.
CPU is an Intel 925 dual core chip.
In your opinion, will the 450W power supply be good enough to keep this system stable?

Total watts is pretty useless these days. It is more important that each rail has current reserve beyond what is attached to that rail. A poster in another thread had a 1000W power supply with 4 rails that he spent nearly $300 on. Each individual rail was spec-ed lower than the minimum for the motherboard almost all the excess power was on the drive connectors not the motherboard connectors and the 4 +12V rails were not helping the motherboard since only 1 rail was supplying the +12V to the motherboard. So in this instance a 500W supply that only has 1 rail that is 25A on the +12V is more powerful than the 1000W supply. In this case, the 500W power supply would be fine for powering up the motherboard alone, that particular 1000W supply would not.
    Lesson here:
You can't just throw Watts at your system without determining where those Watts are going.
It only takes 1 leg of your power supply to be too weak, for the existing setup, to make things act weird. Doesn't matter how much reserve power you have on the other legs. 1A too weak and any chip can power down in the middle of things doesn't matter if you have a 2000W supply that cost $1000.
The components in your computer do not care about how cool your power supply looks. They don't care if it has LED fans or UV connectors or braided sleeves. It doesn't matter how much it costs. Once you find a list of power supplies that will work for your system, then look for adequate cooling, enough of the right connectors, etc. The 2nd to the last in the decision process should be glossy paint and lastly the price. Of course you may want to purchase that clear case power supply with 3 color LED 120mm fan. It may just be a conversation piece sitting on the shelf if it won't work in your system.
    Good examples:
The first one may in-fact be the best one for a particular motherboard. The last one may not even power up a basic quad core system business workstation. You must research what you are buying. Don't just look at how cool it is.
This one has 25A on the single +12V rail. 550W
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817170011
This one has 16A on the +12V1 and 18A on the +12V2 rails. 500W
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817148003
This one has 7 +12V rails, several of them at only 20A. 2000W has 2 power cords and I want to know what case it fits in. I see feet on it and they are calling it a modular supply. There are other ways of doing things. Not everything has to be forced into one system.

  • P6N SLI V2 and E8500 = no post / boot, just black screen.

    Hi,
I have had my P6N SLI V2 for quite some time and never had any problems with it with my old E4600 processor.
Yesterday i decided to upgrade to E8500 (needed more kick from the cpu with my "new" GTX260).
The computer wont boot up at all when the E8500 is installed, fans spin normally etc. but no picture at all, just the "black screen"
I also noticed that my GTX260 cooler fan wont start, tought i broke the somehow at first but then i put my old radeon xsomething in, the fan starts spinning but still same, no picture.
When i put the old E4600 back in, everything works fine.
After this i have tried pretty much everything i can think of, first flashed latest bios i could find (1.4, with the E4600 installed), then cleared cmos, tried failsafe defaults, just one memory module, 2 differend graphics cards, removing extra peripherals,  but now i am pretty much out of ideas. Has anyone actually managed to get E8400 or E8500 processor to work with P6N SLI V2 ? Those cpus are in the supported list but still i have read people complaining about the same problem and found no solution to it from anywhere.
    If so, how?
    -Core 2 Duo E8500, Wolfdale, SLB9K
    -P6N SLI V2 (Bios: 1.4)
    -2 x 2gb mushkin 800mhz (5-5-5-18)
    -corsair 750w, 80+ single 12v raild PSU
    -EVGA GTX260

Thats just... brilliant. (mine is 02)
Spending 160 euros on a CPU (store won`t refund it since there is nothing wrong with it) not to mention roughly 20 hours trying to figure out what is wrong with it just because the supported CPUs list does not have this "little" information... well it sucks, big time.
Then again, i am probably not the first person to say so.
10+ points to Svet for the quick anwer though, just hope i would have found out about this a bit earlier..
never the less, i feel like i have been cheated in some way..
I actually also contacted MSI trough the online customer support form, they said that the E8500 should work, pointed me to the supported CPUs list again and advice me to clear cmos once again so i quess that who ever answered, did not have this information at hand at the time. Well it is an old MB so no big surprises there.
Do you have information on how to proceed with this "adding something to the motherboard" thing, can it be done within Europe, preferably in Finland? Or should i contact the person who answered my question with the online support form by replying to it for this?

  • MSI P6N SLI Plat - Harddrive not appearing in my computer

    Hi guys,
Ive just bought an additional sata2 drive for my pc. I already have a raid - 0 setup.
It shows in bios and i managed to find it using the 'manage' option through XP. Its been formatted to NTFS, and despite being able to copy files over to it,
it doesnt appear in the My computer window?? this is really beginning to bug me, the only advice online has been to format the drive which ive already done twice!!

  • MSI P6N SLI V2 does not boot up from cd/dvd and few other problems

    HI
I just bought a computer P6N SLI V2 + E6750. It has following problem. It does not boot from cd.
I have Sata HD. CD/DVD is installed to IDE as a master.
I have done settings in bios so that First boot is cd/dvd and second is sata HD. Anyhow it still goes to the hd and stars windows.
I was only able to boot up from cd when I disabled hd from boot sequency. Meaning I left only cd/dvd there.
Hopefully you pro's can help me.
Then there is another problem. Windows is telling me that it found new pci device. I do not know what device. I have only Graphig card (geforce 8800 gts) installed into pci-E. Drivers and software are also installed, I assume proberly. How to find out what windows thinks it found.
Third problem is onboard soundcard. I cannot get any sound out from the machine. I have downloaded driver from realtek, but still no sound.
Unfortunatelly I do not have original software for motherboard. Only the latest from MSI website.
    Hopefully someone can help me.
    thanks.

About bootup, i dont know yet.
To find out what windows found, look in devicemanager.
To go there go to controlpanel, system then choose devicemanager.
There you can see what's installed.
Last, your soundcards needs to be enabled in bios, under integrated peripherals there should be a line with "onboard sound", enable this and sound should work, unless its broken.

  • P6N Sli Platinum front audio panel and CPU temp voltage issues

    Hi All,
I got my P6N Sli Platinum yesterday, build up my computer without any major issues. However I have noticed that my audio front panel does not work. It could not detect my microphone when i plug it into front auido panel, it works fine for the rear auido panel though.
Another issues is I highly doubt the accuracy of CPU temp sensor. Msi 's software monitor reports my CPU temp is around 19-20 degree, I know that's too good to be true even I am using a water cooling system. Btw my cpu is E6600. Anyone else has the similar issues?
The third, I notice my CPU voltage is bouncing between 1.1 to 1.24 in CPU-z. And the multiplier is changing from 6 to 9, frequency is changing from 1.6g to 2.4g. I only see this in CPU-z.  Msi 's own software reports CPU running at 2.4g though. Is this cpuz issue or something else?
Finally, any tips to max the overclock potential of this board? I have overclocked to 3.1g but there are some crashes. Going higher the board just won't boot up. I read a review on anandtech.com says 1.22 bios is good for oc. Where can i download that? I only found 1.1 bios on official site.
    Any reply will be appreciated.
    Cheers

C2D-CPUs have a digital internal sensor to monitor CPU Core temperatures.  Have a look at those with Core Temp ( http://www.thecoolest.zerobrains.com/CoreTemp/ ).  This Tool reads the temperature data directly from the register of your CPU. There is nothing wrong with the sensor.  It is rather the MSI tool that does not read the data it provides correctly.

There is no issue.  What CPU-Z allows you to see there is the C1E-feature of your CPU at work.  When there is nothing to do your processor will automatically reduce Core Voltages and frequency to save power and keep temperatures down.  As soon as the work load increases the multiplier is set back to x9 and core voltages increase dynamically.  It is meant to be a good thing.
I have overclocked my system a little and I like that the C1E feature is still working at this speed setting CPU frequency to 2GHz and core voltage to 1.144v when my system is idle.
If you have problems with this feature you can turn it off in BIOS. The option is labeled as "C1E Support" and might be hidden somewhere.  You may be able to hit "F4" to unhide it.
The MSI utilities are not the best tools to monitor your system.  CPU-Z, Core Temp, Everest, Speedfan, Memset, Rightmark Memory Analyzer for example do a far better job.

  • E6600 stock sink, P6N SLI Plat.

ok so I built my system last week and its been up and running pretty well for 2 weeks.  But I worry about dumb crap often and I noticed when I installed the heatsink, to get the 4 corner fasteners to fasten the board did bend a little bit pushing the socket portion of the board down.  Just wondering if this is normal, if theres going to be a failure down the road, just dunno.   My AMD 939s never did this.

I'm no expert, but I can say those things are way more flexible than i'd have thought... Had a problem with my P6N SLI-FI, had a sauder ball on one of the holes for my 775 socket.. Before I noticed it I managed to injure my thumb pressing down on the clamp, and the board took the abuse.. I wouldn't recommend but if it works don't mess with it?

It seems that your CPU (or PSU) died.
You need to borrow an old s775 processor and to test.

  • Poor overclock with E4300 and MSI P6N SLI-Fi - Strap Issue?

A friend of mine and me bought new rigs last friday. Each of us is using a E4300 with Tuniq Tower, a Leadtek 8800 GTS and a 1 GB DDR2-800 4-4-4-12 from G.E.I.L running on a P6N SLI-FI.
Neither of us can clock higher than 250 x 9 = 2,250 MHz with VCore +0,0125. I can run Orthos stable at 2,400 MHz, but will fail 3DMark or Gaming Timedemos. My machine won´t even post above 2,500 MHz. Temperatures are fine and not the problem.
Tried everything, upping VCore up to 1,4V, maxing out the northbridge voltage, clocking down the RAM to 667 or 533 and relaxing the timings. C1E, DOT, EIST etc. is disabled of course. The only thing which helped to get further into windows was fiddling with the northbridge voltage but nonetheless nothing won´t run stable above 2,250 MHz.
The problem looks very similar like the one posted in this thread: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=105321.120
Unfortunately, Systool doesn´t read out anything, seems like NForce 650i isn´t supported yet. I have tried at 1070 in Bios, which should be 267 MHz - nothing different. Also 1080, 1090, 1100... 1120. 1110 is the last setting, with which the machine would even post (with voltages nearly maxxed), at 1120 I have to do a BIOS reset.
Did anyone have similar experiences? Found workarounds?

Hey thanks for your advice, but I am actually not THAT stupid...  :D
I took a step by step approach over 2 days, isolating things. It would run stable at 2,250 MHz with only a notch or two up the VCore. 2,400 MHz also ran Orthos stable (Blend) for some hours but crashed on instant in HL2 or 3DMark. Got at least 3DMark stable (but not HL2) by increasing the NB voltage. Then I started tweaking first VCore only, then NB only, combinations (there are quite a few to try out...). I studied electrical engineering and am repairing computers since I was 12 years old (actually build my first Commodore C64 out of 3 non working ones) so I think I know how to sort out a problem methodically and not by guessing.
The issues I experienced also got me thinking. Why is something Orthos, Prime, etc. stable as a rock but won´t run anything with 3D-graphics? What has that to do with OC the CPU? RAM was sorted out (relaxed timings, 533 MHz with 800 MHz RAM), but looking at some chipset diagramms in tests, it is the northbridge, which connects the PCI-E and therefore the GPU to the CPU. So it was only logical for me to assume that it must be the NB or the BIOS implementation causing the problem. Of course i tested with all different NB voltage options, combinations with VCore etc. Nothing worked, curiously even turning off some powersaving features but changing nothing else prevented the system from posting at settings it had booted to windows before...
Even if I am pleased with my results now (3,015 GHz now at stock voltages rock solid throughout the day) I find the behaviour of the board and the BIOS very strange in the 240+ FSB range with the E4300...
PS: I tested it, it even works flawlessly with maxxed NB voltage at the current 3,015 GHz, which falsifies your too high voltage at a certain power requirement theory, at least for my board. Don´t missunderstand me, I am not posting this just to be right but I think this should be quite interesting and perhaps give some more insight into the problems with this board...
I am going to bed now, having an exam tomorrow.
    Greetings from northern germany,
    Bolle
