P7N Diamond and Q6600

After going through 2 boards and cpus as well as memory from patriot, g.skill and corsair, I still have the random rebbot problems. I have a coolermaster stacker 830m case with the 1000wt psu and have used it with other systems fine.
Which bios and what settings will make this thing stable, no need for overclocking right now.
I have eliminated video cards, memory, psu and heat from the list of possible problems.
I just want to get it stable and running at spec with the ddr2 1066 memory that I have.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks loonym for the BIOS images.
I thought that I would give it one more shot and crossed my fingers. Changed BIOS settings to ones in the image for a basic OC up to 3.2Ghz. Saved and reboot, but it didn’t reboot, and wouldn’t.  Had to wait and then clear everything. Tried the 3.6Ghz settings, and didn’t hold much hope as it wouldn’t even work for 3.2Ghz. Guess what it didn’t work.
I think that it is enough, can’t do a minor OC, and can’t get my 1066 RAM to run at that speed, will only run at 800, no matter what settings I put my RAM to.
This is really starting to get me annoyed. I am not relishing buying a new board and new copy of Vista (OEM) and reinstalling all my stuff due to the new board. However, if it means that I can get a little out of my present CPU by one change in the BIOS, or even buying a new Q9550 that works in the board straight out of the box, and I don’t have to wait for it to be tested or a new BIOS then ASUS here I come.
Like I said enough is enough, this is a high end board cost me £200 and it should enable me to get things running correctly, and it don’t. From now on I won’t buy or build anymore computers with MSI boards. Sorry to all you MSI fans out there, but it isn’t working for me.
I used the settings that loonym posted and they failed for me as well. I adjusted them a tad to an overclock of 3.0 (1333x9) used all of the other settings but dropped the nb voltage one click below his to stay out of the red in this 1.0 bios and set the cpu gtl to 20 instead of 10. Manually set all ram timings and voltage to spec but left it at ddr2 800 (1066 would lock up at start of prime95 torture test). I ran out of time but at those settings it ran the torture test for 30 minutes with zero errors and downloaded a gig of stuff from usenet in the background while keeping a cpu temp of 47c under that load. I am using air cooling so I don't think that was too shabby. Will put it under a more severe stress test tonight after work and try to find a way to get the memory running to speed. I think this board will have a problem with 1066 memory running a full 8gb, I might put that to the test once I establish a stable system as it is now.

    Funny, people should read first.
Running them on 1066MHz instead of 800MHz will get you little to none extra speed.
The only thing you'll get is the possibilty of an unstable system and maybe a 2 second win.
Furthermore, it will only be noticeable in benching, in real life you will not know the differ between 800MHz and 1066MHz.
Just my thoughts on the "1066MHz memory issue", which alot of peeps have lately.

  • Users running the P7N Diamond and QX9650 please weigh in. I need help...

OK, I'll start from the beginning.  I had an EVGA 780i mobo, which ran a Q6600 at 3ghz quite easily.  Well, I decided that I had money to burn so I ordered a QX9650.  It would not work on the EVGA, the cpu voltage and cpu fsb voltage would not adjust no matter what I tried.  So, I popped the cpu into my kids rig, which has a DFI X38 mb and the cpu worked perfectly, voltages adjusted, multiplier adjusted, etc.  During the RMA process to EVGA, I got an MSI P7N Diamond to run SLI with.  Stuck the cpu in it and away I went into Vista 64, all happy.  I had to bump the memory voltage up to 1.95 volts, but that was it.  I then decided to raise the multi from 9 to 10.  I set it, warm booted and tested it in Vista.  100% stable.  2 days later, I attempted to turn my computer on.  No post.  I had to power off/on very quickly to get it to post, at which point I got an error message that the cpu vid had failed or there was a mismatch with the cpu to fsb ratio, hit F1 to enter setup or F2 to load defaults.  I e-mailed MSI and received beta P05 and it was just downhill from there.  I couldn't cold boot at all, stock settings, OC settings, voltages adjusted, it didn't matter.  So back to the shipping bios.  I got a new beta this morning, dated 2/18, and it was the exact same.
    Issues with both beta's:
    1.  Cannot cold boot.
    2.  Logitech G15 acts erratically prior to entering Vista.
    Things I have tried:
    1.  Raising Vcore.
    2.  Raising NB/SB voltages.
    2.  Raising FSB Terminator voltage.
Nothing helps.  MSI simply told me not to OC and run at stock and that there was no problem.  Is there anyone else out there that has this cpu and mb?  If so, can you post your experience with it and let me know if there is something I am doing wrong or could try?

Below is the actual transcript that I had with MSI on this issue.  As far as they are concerned, I don't need to change the multiplier on my QX9650.  (Start reading from the bottom up for the actual order of the conversation)
    Quote
MSI Tech. 02/19/2008 Then, there is no problem with the mb.
End User 02/19/2008 There doesn't seem to be any issues with usb while on using the shipping bios, I only see it when I flash to the beta bios'.
MSI Tech. 02/19/2008 If the stock bios also has the usb issue then try: Have all USB device connected to the rear USB ports that are build onto the mb and retest with all USB header on the mb be removed from any front USB connections or adapter connections and retest. If all steps have been tried and problem still persists then please kindly refer to our website for manufacturer warranty RMA info/request: http://www.msicomputer.com/support/CustomerS.asp
End User 02/19/2008 No change. I cannot even cold-boot at stock settings with this. Also, it still kills my Logitech G15 keyboard randomly. i have to unplug it and plug it back in to get it to power up, and that is only after I boot into Vista. Back on the shipping bios for now at stock settings. Please, if you would, keep me informed of changes or progress. Thanks.
End User 02/19/2008 Thanks! I will poat back if it helps or not.
MSI Tech. 02/19/2008 Beta bios v111 attached to this form.
End User 02/19/2008 Is there any other beta bios' that you have that could help? The P05 didn't work out so well, maybe you have a newer one that I could try? It seems odd that it is only on a cold boot that I have issues and not on warm boots. I am willing to try anything you got at this point!
MSI Tech. 02/19/2008 Sorry, but MSI did not see any issue with using QX9650 processor.
End User 02/19/2008 So are you saying that as far as MSI is concerned, there is no issue with the QX9650 and the P7N Diamond motherboard? I am not asking you for advice on hot to OC it, I am asking you if you know of the issue and are looking into it to try and correct it. If you do not think there is an issue and are not going to investigate it, then I will be very disappointed.
MSI Tech. 02/19/2008 If there is no problem with standard bios and no OC then you can refer to other website/forum for OC suggestions or settings. MSI does not provide these setting/suggestions since it can cause damage to the components.
End User 02/19/2008 Also, I am unable to use the Dual Core center, as I am running Vista 64. It does not load properly when using this OS.
End User 02/19/2008 As of now, it boots and runs fine with the shipping bios and no OC. But, why would I have paid such a high premium to get a QX9650, that has an unlocked multiplier, if I cannot use it? Is this strictly an issue with the newer 45nm Intel processors or is it something else? If not being able to use my cpu's unlocked multiplier is "ok", then I may return the board for a refund.
MSI Tech. 02/18/2008 What is the problem when system uses the standard bios and not OC?
End User 02/18/2008 Is there a fix on the way or is it just a problem with my hardware? I have it back on the shipping bios and it is at least cold-booting now, as well as my G15 is working. I upped the NB voltage a hair above auto, maybe this has somethinng to do with it?
MSI Tech. 02/18/2008 Use the standard bios and use software to OC: http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=utility&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1372
End User 02/18/2008 I was way too quick to say everything is OK. I now have cold boot issues aplenty. 9 times out of 10 it will not post on a cold boot, but will warm boot. I have to power off then on real quickly to get it to post at stock speeds. Also, my Logitech G15 started to act erratic with the P05 beta. I am back on the shipping bios until I hear from you.
End User 02/18/2008 Thanks you for the beta. I flashed to it, cleared the cmos and set everything back up and now I have a new problem. Even though I have disabled the EIST function in the bios, it still seems to be on. i am using cpu-z version 1.44.1 to monitor the multiplier and it randomly shifts between whatever I set it to and 6. It is even doing it when the system is loaded, ie playing games. Please, help!
MSI Tech. 02/18/2008 Beta bios attached to this form.
End User 02/18/2008 Everything is stable 100%. But, on my QX9650, I set the multiplier to 10X to run at 10x333=3.33ghz. It was fine until this morning. I turned the computer on and it would not post. I powered down and repowered it up and it siad the cpu vid had failed or errored, hit F1 to enter setup or F2 to load defaults. I entered setup and the multiplier was set back to 9x. I left it there and am ok now. Is there a beta bios that helps out operations with the newest Intel 45nm processors, such as the QX9650?
I have absolutely no issues in Vista itself, it is 100% stable.  It is only on a cold boot that I have serious issues.  And yes, I got 3 in a row, went to work for a few hours, then came home and bam!  No cold boot.  Also, I don't know how comfortable I am raising the vcore that much, as 1.21-1.25 is the normal operating range.  1.3625 is aweful high.  Now, with the 65nm quads, that is more in the range of what would be needed, but no way should it be necessary to pushh this QX9650 to a meeger 3.33ghz.  As far as temps go, I have the processor watercooled, so no worries there.  I am away from home now until Saturday morning, so I can't test anything until the weekend.
    Thanks alot for the responses!

  • Msi p7n-diamond and coolermaster hyper48

    Hi friends
Just wanted to know whether coolermaster CPU cooler Hyper48 will fit with msi p7n-diamond mobo with intel q6600.Will it work?
    Kindly suggest

I can't answer specifically, but did purchase and install a Rosewill RCX-Z4 120mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler for my p7n board with an E8400 processor.  I looked at that Coolermaster product but was a little concerned it wouldn't fit because of the heat pipes.  I opted to use the Rosewill brand as it had a better form factor, and it vents out the top of my case.
My only complaint about the Rosewill is you can't get to the CPU power connectors on the board (8 pin) inside the case with the cooler attached.  The fan assembly gets in the way.

  • P7N Diamond and C2D E8400

I'm trying to find out what is the best and most stable BOIS to use with a E8400 other then MSI recommend 1.2 BIOS. Because when my system POST it stops a NVRAM testing.... and just hangs there. I would like to leave my BIOS setting to default and not have to manually changes setting unless I am overclocking my system.
    My System Specs:
    Windows Vista Ultimate
    Intel C2D E8400 3.0GHz. Stepping E0
    P7N Diamond (BIOS Ver. 1.2)
    XFX GeForce 8800GT 512MB x2 (SLI)
    Patriot Extreme Performance DDR2 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC2-6400 Low Latency DIMM Kit x2 (4GB ram total 4-4-4-12 2T)
Seagate 500GB SATA Hard Drive x2
    LG DVD-RW SATA x2
Enermax Liberty DXX 620 watt Power Supply
Thank you for your help and advice.

Can you please explain what in your own words, what the so called "NVRAM Issue" actually is in your case?  From what you said above, it is rather hard to understand what your actual problem is...

  • P7N Diamond and Wolfdale E8600 : Compatibility ?

    Hello,
MSI Technical support confirms me that the Intel Wolfdale CPU E8600 is not compatible with the P7N Diamond motherboard.
Do you think that it will never be compatible ? I hope their will develop bios driver that allows it to work together.
I won't believe why it is compatible for a E8500 CPU which only difference with the E 8600 CPU is the frequence (3,33 instead of 3,16) ???
The intel E8600 will be very popular and I think MSI have to do their best to find a solution.

Since CPU support page showed it as under testing and now confirm to you as not compatable you'll have to take their word for it. They will someday update the list with 'NO' instead of 'UNDER TESTING'

  • P7N Diamond and multiple RAID

I'm looking to buy a new system and MSI's P7N Diamond looks like a good choice to me.
The specs says that the onboard nForce 570i SLI supports 6 SATA II ports in RAID 0, 1, 0+1, 5
Is there anyone who knows if its possible to have multiple RAIDs configed on that controller?
I'm thinking 2x WD Raptor 36GB in one RAID 0 for the system and 2x WD 1TB in one RAID 0 for data.
Is it possible to have both RAID-disks and non RAID-disks (single disks) on the controller on the samr time?
    Many questions...
    Most gratefull for any help!
    Best Regards!
    /Pär

"Is there anyone who knows if its possible to have multiple RAIDs configed on that controller?"
Yes should be fine, just create 2 independent arrays.
"Is it possible to have both RAID-disks and non RAID-disks (single disks) on the controller on the samr time?"
If you want to use the same Sata ports for single disk(s), you will need to disable RAID from BIOS for those Sata channels where are connected your HDD's which will be used as single drive.
    Example you may have:
    SATA1  WD Raptor 36GB |
    SATA2  WD Raptor 36GB | both 2x WD Raptor 36GB assigned in RAID0 (or 1)  --->  Array 1
    SATA3  WD 1TB |
    SATA4  WD 1TB |  both 2xWD 1TB assigned in RAID0 (or 1) ---> Array 2
SATA5  Some other SATA HDD as single drive (RAID for SATA5 should be disabled in BIOS)
SATA6  Some other SATA HDD as single drive (RAID for SATA6 should be disabled in BIOS)

  • P7N Diamond and TWO nVidia 9800 GX2 Video Cards

Hello all, I have a simple question.  I’ve searched Google and this is one of the few places I’ve found people even discussing the subject of a MSI P7N Diamond motherboard and TWO nVidia 9800 GX2 video cards running SLi.
Here is my system.  MSI P7N Diamond, 6 GB OCZ Reaper Memory, Pentium E8500 processor, Asus Silent Knight cooler, two eVGA 8800 GT Superclocked Edition video cards running SLi, Tagan BZ Series 800 W power supply, four 500 GB Seagate Barracuda hard drives running RAID 0 (2 for the C drive & 2 for the D drive), Sound Blaster PCIe sound (came with MB), LG Blu-ray, DVD, CD burner & HD-DVD Reader, second LG DVD/CD burner, GL W2452T monitor and Windows Ultimate Edition 64-bit.
My question is, can I replace the two 8800 GT SC video cards with TWO 9800 GX2 video cards?  I know the P7N Diamond can handle Tri-SLi, but can it handle two cards with 2 GPU’s each.  I am also considering changing up my two 1 GB Reaper chips with 2 GB chips so I will have 8 GB of RAM.  This should make up for the 2 GB of memory the 9800 GX2’s are using up (if, in fact the motherboard can handle the cards).
I was also wondering, if the motherboard CAN handle dual 9800 GX2’s, can my power supply handle it at 800 watts?
And for my bonus question, would I be better off considering going with two 9800 GTX+ cards rather than the GX2's?  Would I honestly se a huge improvement running two GX2's as opposed to two GTX+ cards?  After all, the 9800 GTX+ cards would be much cheaper!
Thanks in advance for any help!!!
    GH

Thanks for all the help BossKiller!!!  You’ve been a HUGE help!
RemusM, I have two answers for you…
From the sensible side that should be thinking this through, no.  You are absolutely 100% correct, I probably don’t need to run two 9800 GX2 cards.  I can play the games I’m currently playing quite well on two 8800 GT OC cards.  I should save my money.
And, from the geek side I say heck yes!  This will ensure I can run pretty much everything out there and anything made in the near and not so distant future with all settings maxed out!
That said, I wish I would listen to RemusM and my sensible side… but alas it’s a losing battle.  Plus, I may be getting the two 9800 GX2’s for $300 ($150 each) .  So it’s not that bad.  If I have to pay full price for them, the geek side may lose out anyhow.
    GH
Oh and by the way RemusM, I LOVE the sig block!!  That’s an old Timex isn’t it?  It’s not the Sinclair 1000 is it?

  • P7N Diamond and RAID 0

    Hello,
My PC is equiped with P7N Moterboard and bios 1.3 ver.; Conroe E6700, 1 HD Western Digital Raptor SATA 1,5 10.000 TM, 150 GB, 16 MB, 1 Seagate SATA 2, 7.2000 TM, 320 GB, 16 MB and 1 Western Digital IDE 5.400 TM, 8 MB, 160 GB; Power Supply 750 W.
    There is one free slot.
Could you tell me if there will be no problem to install a RAID 0 system with two Velocirator 300 GBx2=600 GB ?
I would like to keep the 3 present drives as 3rd, 4th and 5th drive for saves.
    1) How do I make the hard drives installation ? Do i have to change something in hte bios ? Do i have to install drivers ?
    2) Do I have to re-install Vista 64 ?
    3) Will I earn a lot of time, especially for games ? Is it worthly ?
    Thank you so much ....

    1) You have to install the RAID drivers first before you can configure RAID.
    2) If you are intending to run OS from the RAID partition, the answer is Yes.
    3) It depends on what RAID you are doing, RAID 0 benefits for faster access time, RAID 1 for better reliability, RAID10 aka 0+1 will be both RAID 0 and 1 functions.

If you are keeping it on 3.6 GHz and you have DDR2-6400 memory you shouldn't need to unlink the FSB. The Q6600 G0 CPU's I have worked with, had a sweetspot at 3.6 GHz and was far more reliable at that speed, than on other frequencies in the range up to this spot.
You should not go for a silent version CPU cooler on this. The CPU require a lot of cooling. Find a cheap watercooling kit, or very big air-cooler with adjustable fans (it might be noisy). The Zalman I used was a 9700, and I had it running at full-speed making a lot of noise. Later on I changed to use a Thermal Take Kandalf LCS watercooling chassis which was really good for the setup. Kept CPU and my 8800 gtx at around 50c and it was quiet.
The only problem I had on this system was a NorthQ 450W PSU. It couldn't really handle things, so all my problems with crashes and BSODs that I initially had with the system, went away when changing PSU to a thermaltake toughpower 850w.
Mine did about 4GHz, but I never really found a way too cool it properly at 4 GHz. Another thing I remember is, that the Q6600 gets unstable around 85c+, and is not really usable in that range.
I would love to take it to 3.6 or higher.
I see a lot of people doing that.
But, I don't trust this Arctic Freezer 7 to go that high.
Even at 3.42Ghz it is sometimes unstable under load.
I have Core Temp set to put it to sleep at 78C.
I would like to be able to keep it under 50 or 60C on these long jobs.
It's tempting to consider water cooling, because the better air coolers just won't fit in there.
I also have to consider noise.
Are the pumps noisy for water cooling?
Recently, my system has started going into standby or sleep if I walk away too long.
I come back and find all the fans as high as they are before booting.
This is making it harder to abandon the computer when it's on a long job.
I don't know where to fix that - BIOS or Win7?

    Do these voltages look right?
I recently overclocked to 3.42ghz by cloning the settings of someone with the same hardware in this thread.
    I ran Prime95 for 10 minutes.
After 5 minutes, the hottest core reached 70C.
In the next five minutes, the temp wavered between 69-71C.

So I tried a simple overclock with no luck getting into Windows. So I decided to try the beta BIOS 1.1B4 but noticed that if I disabled EIST it drops the adjusted CPU Ratio down to (7x333) for 2.33 core clock with all auto settings. And the option for "Adjust CPU Ratio" only has 7 or 6. No matter what other setting I use the only way to get back to a 7.5 ratio is to enable EIST.
So then I tried P05 with the same results if I disable EIST, no 7.5 ratio only 7 or 6. So I figured I'll just flash back to 1.0 and leave it at default for now until another BIOS is released. But now its happening with 1.0 also. No 7.5 ratio unless EIST is enable and of course that removes the Adjust CPU Ratio option altogether. Not really a problem in Vista because I always have my power management set to High Performance and Processor Power Management set to 100% in minimal and maximum, so it runs at (7.5x333) all the time but now the the auto vcore is at 1.200-1.208 instead of the 1.128-1.136 it was earlier after I first installed the Q9300.
So I figure I will test out by putting my E8400 back disabling EIST, do a few reboots and then replace the Q9300 to see what happens.
Also with EIST enabled Coretemp shows a VID of 1.1125V which lets me know I'm not going crazy because I know EIST was disabled at first and it reported the 1.0375 as the VID and kept the 7.5 mutiplier.

You should ask MSI as they would have a better idea than the forum.

I sent them an email. They replied to wait for the next BIOS release, since this CPU is still under testing.

  • P7n diamond with q6600

Ok guys, I have an opportunity to get this board for $160 from a buddy of mind. I recently had a q6600 with a 1.3125 vid on a Gigabyte p35-ds3l board that I was able to clock to 3.6ghz stable.
I recently just picked up another q6600 with a 1.2125 vid
A couple of questions for you...
    1) Will Crucial Ballistix work on this board?
    2) Are there any significant modifications I will need to do to this board to keep the northbridge cool?
    3) Are there any common "fsb holes" in this board?
    4) Have any of you clocked  your quad to 3.6 stable ( I will be using a ultra 120 extreme with ultra kaze fan)
Thanks in advance... I can pick up the board this afternoon if I want, but I'm just wondering how successfull people have clocked the q6600

  • P7N Diamond vP07 and v1.42 Beta

These BIOS' are for the P7N Diamond and the P7N Diamond ONLY.
I've attached the performance BIOS vP07 and beta BIOS v1.42. Please provide feedback on these BIOS' as they can help other users in future.
    NOTES:
Do not load optimized defaults with the performance BIOS, as it will set memory timings to 4-4-4-18 1T and no memory can handle these tight timings at high speeds, without excessive amounts of voltage.
The beta may be missing options, as they aren't always complete BIOS'. But they tend to fix quite some issues.
*** Flashing either of these BIOS' are at your own risk. Do not complain if you end up with a paper weight! ***
*** Do not post problems/queries in here! All non-feedback related replies will be removed with/without warning! ***
    Flashing the safe way:
NOTE: Use second mode from the Tool, (Point to BIOS file directly). Extract BIOS from archive and point to the BIOS file.

The 1.1B4 BIOS has been quite good.  Using it, I've been able to bench my Q6600 at 4.05ghz (450mhz FSB) and find stability at 3.6ghz (400mhz FSB) with +.25000 vCore.  However, I know my chip is capable of being stable at 3.6ghz on less, and I'm hoping future BIOSes will only further improve OC results.
    Thank you for the feedback.

I recall there being quite a flurry of new releases leading up to the current 1.1B4 release, but there hasn't been anything since.  Do you have any word on when we can expect further BIOS developments for the P7N Diamond.
I'm not quite sure, but I will continue to check and upload the new betas as they come.

Also, while many of us have been able to zone in on stable FSB Term and GTL Ref voltages, the meaning of the numeric, non-direct-voltage settings remains a mystery.  Have you been able to find out any more information about these settings and how they relate to an actual voltage?
I'm still waiting for an answer on this...
