P7N Diamond/E8500 Overclocking Issue

Hello!  I’m trying to do my first overclock.  I’ve never been an overclocker but decided to give it a shot… so this is/was my first attempt.  I read several overclocking posts, how-to’s, etc… before I started.
I wanted to get my system running somewhere around 3.8 GHz.  I also have the OCZ Reaper PC2-8500 memory and wanted to see if I could actually get it to run above 800 MHz as well.
First I made all the basic adjustments to begin overclocking.  I DISABLED Spread Spectrum, D.O.T. Control, Intel EIST, Execute Bit Support, C1E Support, Limit CPUID MaxVal to 3 and CPU TM.  I also went into Windows (Vista Ultimate Edition x64) and made a custom Power Management profile and adjusted everything to Performance settings.
Next, I started making adjustments.  I was at it for about 45 minutes and finally got a stable setting that booted to Windows fine and ran Prime 95 for about 30 minutes with no problems.  I understand this isn’t a complete stress test by any stretch; I just wanted to make sure it was somewhat stable for now.  Here’s where I am at:
CPU Frequency:  3.72 (393x9.5)
FSB Frequency: 1571 MHz
DRAM Frequency: 1048 MHz
CPU Voltage: 0.05000 (My VID is 1.220v I believe- have it written down at home)
DRAM Voltage: 2.10
NB Voltage: 1.375
All other voltages: AUTO
The problem is my BIOS says I’m running at 3.72 GHz and Windows says I’m running at 3.72 GHz.  On the other hand CPU-Z, Prime95 and the Nvidia Control Panel all say I’m running at the stock E8500 settings.  I even had Prime95 running while looking at CPU-Z and it never changed.
So needless to say I’m really confused here.  I’m not sure my system is truly overclocked or not.  Considering this is my first overclock I can’t imagine I managed to successfully (although I do need more stress testing) do it in 45 minutes.  So, what am I missing or what did I do wrong?  Why doesn't CPU-Z and the other software recognize my adjustments?  I was considering setting the BIOS back to normal and using the Nvidia CP to make overclocking adjustments... is that a good idea?
Thanks in advance for any help!!!!
GH

Yep, CPU-Z version 1.51 is what I have installed.  It kind of stinks that 3.7G's is the highest folks can get this board.  I know many folks get the E8500 well past 4+G's, but I'll be happy with a stable 3.7G's.  I really wanted to keep with BIOS overclocking, I just thought maybe I was doing something wrong.  Any suggestions on some sort of performance testing I can do at default settings then at my overclock settings so I can verify I'm getting a performance increase?
Thanks for the reply!!!!!!!
GH
P.S. Oh yea, my VID is 1.2250v... I knew I had it written down!

  • P7N Diamond Blue Screen Issues

Ok first off specs... Nothing is overclocked--
Motherboard: P7N Diamond Bios V. 1.3 (Flashed and reinstalled after CMOS clear)
    Power Supply: Ultra 1000W Model: ULT-HE1000X  (+5V [28A]; +3.3V [24V]; +12V [70A]; -12V [0.8A]; +5VSB [3A])  All tested and working well with in normal specs
    CPU: Intel Q9550
RAM: 4 x 1GB 1066 PC2-8500 Kingston HyperX Ram (pulled each one and tested)
Hard Drive: Seagate 500GB SATA (Tested-No issues)
Video Card: XFX 9800 GT, 512MB GPU (Brand new..Replaced 8800 GT)
Operating System: Windows Vista Ultimate 64Bit. (Reloaded)
Worked fine for approximately 9 months.  Now however I am getting recurrent Blue Screens, even after testing each piece and following the instructions given on other threads in this forum.  Please advise.

To reach stability (still testing as I don't quite trust it yet but it looks promising)
**This is after testing PSU, And Hard drives for failure**
1 Replaced the Video Card (It was artifacting as the blue screens started, but they continued after replacement)
2 Repair installed OS to make sure it was not software related
    2 Blew out dust
    3 Updated Bios
4 Pulled CMOS battery and replaced it
5 Pulled all but 1 stick of RAM (Tested each stick separately to make sure they were still good) set to auto settings in bios
7 Reinstalled OS to Fresh drive
8 Installed Newest drivers and updates
9 Reinstalled the other 3 GB of RAM
everything appears stable now....but if something happens I will be sure to let you know

  • PC keeps crashing P7N Diamond, soundcard driver issue?

    Hi everybody!
I have followed some forums on xtremesystems.org and I ended up here.
I'm doing my 3rd build over the years (haven't done one for the last 2 years). I have done so far everything with extreme caution as don't want to mess up anything (I have had the case together already for the last 2 weeks and haven't even had chance to fire up even one game  ). So far I have stayed away from trying over clock anything since my rig is not even stable with stock settings (plus I'm newb so I'm not ready to over clock yet). Haven't adjusted anything in Bios except DRAM voltage to 2.10 (recommended factory settings) and the timings 4-4-4-15 (again recommended factory settings). Everything fired up with first go but when I started to intstall drivers then I started to run into problems. I'm running XP Pro 64 and these are the drivers that I have used used so far:
    Mobo: 9.64_nforce_winxp64_english_whql
    GPU: 169.21_forceware_winxp_64bit_english_wh ql
X-Fi drivers: the ones that came with CD as cant find any from the internet that would go for XP64
I did not install Media Shield and I didn't install any software with X-Fi.
My main problem is that whenever I'm trying to install some software or drivers, the system keeps crashing by just rebooting from the middle of the install. It also kept crashing when I had that that software installed (volume control etc) that came with X-Fi, when ever I had mp3 playing and wanted to increase volume. I'm not sure if its any important but I have run Prime95 Small FFT Torture Test for 2 hours and everything was OK. But my my computer still keeps crashing randomly when I'm trying to install anything. Sometimes it takes like three attempts before I manage to install something. My own theory is that it has something to do with the X-Fi drivers.
All ideas are welcome, as I have no idea what do try next.
    Sincerely,
    Janx
PS! I do apologize for my bad English as its not my native language.

Regards "creative 5.10.0.33 whql dated 3/2/2007" drivers, are those the ones that you can download from MSI website (from here http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=driver&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1372 ) ? If yes then I cant even install them. I cant remember what error it prompts me with as I'm using that Audigy for time being. I will edit my post later after I have swapped the cards back and done some further testing. I let you know what error it shows.
    It shows the following message:
"This installation does not support the AMD 64 processor architecture"

and just a question here although this might be a futile exercise, have you tried moving the card around to different slots?
Tried few different slots. Same old story, computer keeps crashing when trying to install some software. As a side note its quite random. Sometimes it crashes with first software I try to install, sometimes with second or third. It doesent have any preference which program it likes more or less. Sometimes if it doesn't install some certain software with first run I may be able to install it with second or third run. Quite random thing. There isn't any specific pattern that I have discovered (well except the fact it only becomes unstable after I install those drivers. Everything is so random.

If you want to experiment you can read about some end-user modded x-fi drivers here: http://www.driverheaven.net/audio-general-technical-discussion/149754-vista-xp-driver-support-audigy-xtreme-audio-xfi-cards.html and here: http://www.youp-pax.org/
Tried those Youp_Pax_XFIAudio&XFIXpressAudioV1.01 drivers and it produces following message:
"Setup is unable to detect a supported product on your system. Please ensure that your product is properly installed before running this Setup program. Setup will exit." (and it only gives me an option to press "OK")
I also did a fresh Windows XP 64 install and tried again. No luck as it still prompts me with the same message. As a side note, I am able to install those drivers that come with the CD. So therefore I believe my product is properly installed. But that could be just me still doing something wrong (but it doubt).
I'm also going through these issues with MSI online support. They are very helpful, but so far there isn't much breakthrough. This is their last advice:

    Dear,
Please go to the following link to download the xp 64-bit driver for your sound card to have a try. If still can't help, please mail us again.

    Regards
    MSI Technical Support Team
Using that driver results with the same error message when I try to install it:
"Setup is unable to detect a supported product on your system. Please ensure that your product is properly installed before running this Setup program. Setup will exit."
But that is kinda obvious as those are drivers for Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio but I have PCI Express Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio . The soundcard that is shipped with MSI P7N Diamond motherboard is not true X-Fi so therefore those X-Fi Xtreme Audio drivers should not work anyway.
I know it was long shot but it was worth to try.
I have notified them about my results, will see what other ideas they might have.
All ideas or suggestions are very welcome
    Cheers

  • P7n platinum - e8400 overclocking issues, pls post your settings

    Dear OC experts,
I have troubles overclocking e8400 to 3.6 ghz on p7n platinum board. I have tried many variables and options in BIOS, but the problem remains the same. While doing regular tasks on my PC, everything seems to be stable, but when I start a game (battlefield 2 bad company or skyrim) the PC freezes. I have upgraded BIOS to the latest version, I have all the newest drivers, tried many different settings in the OS, but it does not help. The video card is gtx560. There are no problems/freezing when I set all the values in the cell section in bios back to default.
I have searched web alot, my eyes are red... The only remaining hope - you : )
I would greatly appreciate your help. Could you please post your bios settings for the OC'ed e8400 if you have the same board.

  • P7N Diamond USB Voltage issues?

    Hey Bosskiller & AaronYuri,
Are either of you, or anyone else, aware of any USB voltage issues on this board? I recently bought a 32GB USB Flash drive that was failing bad out of the box. When I tried to boot into Windows Vista with the USB Key plugged in, Vista would give errors saying that the device was not recognized and has failed. I had to unplug the USB Key and plug it back in in order for it to work. Also I was not able to boot from it after creating bootable files on it using the MSIHQ USB Bootble Tool. During BIOS POST, the PC would hang at "Initializing USB Devices" for about 20 seconds and then eventually continue, having not recognized the USB device. I called up the manufacturer support and they suggested that the USB key was not getting enough voltage and had me try plugging it into different USB slots. Turns out that if I plugged it into my Monitor USB Hub it would work fine. Same is true if I plug it into any of the two lower USB slots on the P7N mogo (back of computer). Device fails if plugged into the upper slots or the slots on the front of the PC tower. I use other devices in the front and upper slots all the time without issue, but perhaps they require low voltage. Does this make any sense? Thank you.

Have you tried with different USB device to check if the similar problem will persist?

  • P7n diamond+Q6600 overclocking not stable

    hi folks
im currently trying to overclock my Q6600 to 3.6 but for some reason its not stable..tried dierent voltages and still crash after 5m with OCCT,does anyone know some good setup or ideas to make this work?
by the way here are my voltages for now:
    fsb clock 1600
    dram clock 800
    cpu v 0.22500
    dram v 2.10
    nb v 1.450
    sb v 1.550
    cpu gtl 0.850
    fsb term 1.245

Hi smatos. Could you give us the settings & voltages you have tried so far, & what has been your highest stable OC & settings? In bios Cell Menu, do you have 'Spread Spectrum' disabled?
What type CPU cooler do you have? Do you have any auxilliary cooling for the Northbridge? On my P7N D., NB heat, & a FSB hole at 1600 +/- 30, was it's biggest obstacle. To relieve the NB heat, the heatsink was removed & reseated with AS5 thermal compound, & a spot cooler put in place. Substantial case air flow is also critical in an aggressive OC.
    In this section of the forum, there are several threads OC'ing the P7N D. & the Q6600. There may be some good tips & info in them that may be of help as well. Here's a couple links;

    Hi to all!
Can you help me to overclock my system, please?

    - Windows xp 64 sp2
with the default vcore (1.1) the system boot and load win64 at 1550 fsb and multipler by 9.5x; if I try fsb 1600 or 1604 (for the supposed fsb hole) the system does not boot. I've tried to up the vcore and the 8x multipler with the same result.
I don't think that is a cpu limit (all e8500 go to 4 ghz), but my inesperience to set up the parameters on the "cell menu", like all voltage parameters.
    Thanks a lot

What were your voltages? You're going to need a lot of nb volts with all that ram in there. The only thing I have is some screens from e8400 bench runs. I'll put them here so you can look. These were with beta bios 1.21. I was pushing voltages quite hard for this although I can't remember the exact numbers. That mobo doesn't have that cpu now. I'm running a q6600 in the P7N diamond now. I may have some photos of those bios settings though stored on my drives, I'll try and look tomorrow.

  • Overclock E8500 on P7N diamond nforce 780i

I have read the guides here, and beginning to understand more about overclocking. However I need to know if there is any chance to overclock my cpu with only a stock cooler. I have not touched anything inside the Bios yet, besides shutting off EIST.
    My system:
    BIOS Type:  AMI
    BIOS Version: V1.2
    System BIOS Date: 07/17/08

    2x Western Digital Caviar GP 500GB SATA2, 16MB 7200RPM
Cooler Master Cosmos Silver m/850w PSU, 2x12cm Fans, Aluminum
My goal is only to reach 3,3ghz. And if this is possible, I will be very greatful for som pointers in which bios adjustment that might work. And yes I know the limits is different from each uniqe processor, but with only a stock cooler those limits is not an option for me.
    Thank you in advance
Edit: My idle cpu temp in coretemp is 42c, in realtemp 35c. At load in Orthos small FFTs - stress cpu, I get 58c in coretemp.

  • Overclocking 45nm Quad and P7N Diamond

Hi everyone.  I have a Xeon X3350 (same as a Q9450) and I'm trying to OC it.  But it's just not working...at all...not even a little.
Default clocks are 333x8, but I can't even get it to 350x8.  I know it's not the processor because I've seen people get it up to 475x8 without issues.
The processor has a VID of about 1.02, and I've given it a +.125 Vcore bump and NB voltage is at 1.45.  It POSTs but Windows won't load.
FSB term is at 25 and I've varied CPU ref from the defaults up to 60, still nothing.  I should be able to get it to 350x8 on stock voltages, but it doesn't work.
RAM is at 5-5-5-15 2T @ 800MHz and 2.1V.  BIOS is 1.0.  (I know there are newer BIOS, but shouldn't 1.0 work with just the modest OC?)
I'd appreciate any advice or suggestions.  Thanks.

Greetings, I couldn't help but to comment on this.  I think you wom't be able to overclock further with the P7N diamond.  I had mine and I went back to my trusted P35 Platinum.  I had problems with it with my E8500, tried all the beta bios and to no avail.  Last week I got my new Q9450 and the same thing happened.  You just cant have stable overclock.  You will get different kinds of errors and bsod's.  Now, with ol" P35 I'm running my Q9450 @3.4 with just 1.21 vcore. There were a few guys  here who were lucky to run their Q6600 but these are "old" procs.  I wish they could try running E8500 or Q9450 and see if they get the same results.  I think MSI has problem with the board.  Why is it that they have not released any complete and certified bios for the P7N diamond???  It's been months and I got tired going to their website and no new bios.  And the four beta's are still not that good to work with.  The board looks good, the layout is good... but it sucks.

  • P7N Diamond 1066mhz Reaper boot issue

I have had this machine for a year, originally I had 4 sticks of 800mhz OCZ ram in it, but somehow 2 of the sticks developed errors (1 stick from each batch of 2) and they were returned, I ended up replacing them with 2x2gb OCZ reaper HPC sticks which i have been running at 800mhz (i know thats their ACTUAL speed).
Problem is, they are rated to 1066mhz and its always been niggling at me to run them as they should.
I currently have them set at 1066mhz, 2.1V, 5-5-5-15 and they seem pretty stable, the problem is that the machine wont boot from cold like this, i can sit here all day and use it, but if i shut it down then hit the power button the lights come on for a split second and then nothing. The only way to get it to boot is to reach round and turn the PSU off for 5 seconds then turn it on and it will boot first time. This as you can guess is a real pain in the ass.
If i drop them down to 800mhz it boots fine with no issues, but I would really like to figure out why it refuses to boot like this.
Currently most settings in the cell menu are on auto, i stuck the NB up to 1.4V to see if that would help but it did nothing and the issue remains, any help would be appreciated or I may have to drop the speed down again just to save my back.
Edit: forgot to say im running beta bios 1.2B1

Ok..  I have the exact same ram, and I'll tell you what I did..  First off, the P7N Diamond (and I'm assuming the Platinum as well) doesn't give you an option to change tRFC in the cell menu.  These sticks need the tRFC to be set to 54.  Depending on when you bought your RAM (I bought mine May 08), the sticks may or may not have this change implemented as to whether they FORCE tRFC to 54 clocks.  If yours are a bit older, chances are that they do not have this fix implemented.  I have been assured by OCZ that all NEW 1066 Reaper RAM now has the SPD adjusted to force tRFC to 54 clocks.
If you think you have an older set of RAM, check out this link - http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=36341
Instructions are posted there on how to flash the SPD of your Ram to force tRFC to 54 clocks.
Originally, I couldn't understand why I couldn't get my RAM up to its rated speed.  I knew that I would technically be overclocking to get up to 1066 from 800mhz, but every time I changed the speed in the Cell menu I would either get a hard lock or BSOD.  Once I flashed the SPD, everything now works tickety-boo - no problems whatsoever.  Give it a shot..
Also, just a quick note - you probably won't need to give your ram as much juice after you've flashed the SPD..  I know that they're rated up to 2.1 or 2.2v, but chances are at 1066 with 5-5-5-15, you can get away with 1.9-2.0v
Dude Can u tell me the exact settings u have done in BIOS . And I dont think that my system is really stable with these settings . And what does SPD means ? I am really noob in Overclocking .

  • P7N Diamond heat issues

I got my GTX 275 FTW in yesterday and while my rig is pretty screaming now, I'm having some heat issues. My profile contains all my specs and settings. I was hitting temps of up to 66c or so on my CPU when playing Grid at 1920x1080 with full AA/AF turned on yesterday. I've got a Cosmos 1000 case, which is quite silent, but not the best at moving heat, although it has a good number of fans.
I installed Nvidia Precision tool and set my fan to 70%. I'm hoping that helps some. Is there a way to crank up the fans any with the P7N diamond mobo? I've checked speedfan and it shows my CPU fans at 100%. I'm not sure about PSU or case fans and if there is any way to crank them up some. Any advice on maybe cooling it down some? Also, any suggestions on maybe tweaking my bios settings? I had a hell of a time getting the thing to run stable, as I had to OC and crank up the voltage to get the thing to even work out of the box. Thanks!

Well, this temperature limit is not defined for the Core Temperatures, but actually for the so-called "TCase" temperature (temperature measured at/in the geometrical center of the CPU's own heatspreader).  There is no sensor there, so you can't really measure it anyway.
The limit for the Core Temperatures (TJunction) is much higher  (Core Temp should show you the TjMax/TJunction value).  It is usually around 95-105°C for a Quad Core processor.
Thanks for the info. So what would you think is a good "max" Core Temp temperature to go by before worrying? Obviously you would prefer to stay well below the TjMax value I would think... Also, what about GPU temp for a GTX 275 or do you know? I really appreciate the feedback by they way. It helps a lot.
I have also been worried about some of my bios settings, but have been unable to move to a new bios because I'm not sure how to convert the % based values to the more meaningful ones used with later revisions.. but alas that is another topic in and of itself.

  • HELP! - Voltages for Overclocking Q9450 on the MSI P7N Diamond (780i chipset)

Hey.  I fully understand the settings as far as frequencies go, but am a total voltage newb.  No matter what I do I cant seem to get a stable vista load up with my voltage settings.
Please help me by providing suggested voltage settings for my hardware.
    CPU - Intel Core2Quad Q9450
    RAM - 6 gigs of DDR2-800 rated at 2.1V
VIDEO - Dual Nvidia Geforce 8800GT's in SLI
MOBO - MSI P7N Diamond, based off the Nvidia Nforce 780i SLI chipset
My cooling is sufficient, and I have the BIOS version 1.2
I also turned off all of the overclocking not friendly functions, example: spread spectrum, and DOT, ETC....
I am trying to run my CPU at 3.2 GHZ (400 mhz before multiplier)
my settings I want are (as shown in the P7N bios)
    System Clock Mode - Manual
    FSB clock - 1600
    DRAM clock - 800
Please help me by providing the proper voltages for my setup
Everything I need is marked by "???"
    CPU Voltage - ???
DRAM Voltage - (already have, its 2.1)
    NB voltage - ???
    SB voltage - ???
NB Memory reference voltage - ???
DIMM memory reference voltage - ???
    Memory terminator voltage - ???
CPU GTL reference voltage - ???
NB GTL reference voltage - ???
    FSB terminator voltage - ???
SB sleep mode voltage - ???
PCI Expander PLL voltage - ???
For the sake of you not typing too much, if you specify voltages, any that you do not specify will be assumed to be left at [AUTO]
PLEASE help me by providing some voltages for me, as I have absolutely no clue what to put for them.  If you have any questions about my hardware feel free to ask, and any help is GREATLY APPRECIATED

adjusting gtl ref. voltages isn't very difficult, but it is probably best to learn the basics first.
So, basically, increase the fsb a little. So, for example, from 1333 to 1400. See if it's stable, if it isn't try bumping up vcore one notch and try again. If not try Northbridge. Then later move on to stuff like the fsb term.
Test stability using prime95, there is a 64-bit multi-core aware version floating around somewhere. Try the ftp server linked to in the "hot use prime95" sticky on here.
Tbh with your OC you shouldn't need to touch any other voltages, or really use the gtl ref settings. What exactly is "sufficient" cooling though? Stock?
*EDIT: on a side note, just so you don't think I'm deliberately being awkward not telling you specific voltages, they wouldn't do you any good. Every cpu/mobo can handle different freq. at different voltages. Also, use cpu-z to check on your actual voltage and make sure you don't raise it beyond 1.3625 (I think that's right, it's 1.36something anyway)
Thanks for the tips.  The reason I wanted to jump straight to FSB 1600 is because the MSI p7n is really picky and only likes 1:1 ratios.
My "sufficient cooling" is an aftermarket heatsink, high performance thermal paste, and MASSIVE airflow through my case.  If you want specifics, its the Scythe Zipzang

CPU Voltage - No one can tell you this.
NB voltage - Depends on what frequency you want
SB voltage - What's your HDD setup?
NB Memory reference voltage - Auto
DIMM memory reference voltage - Auto
    Memory terminator voltage - Auto
CPU GTL reference voltage - Depends on speed and other voltages
NB GTL reference voltage - Same as above
FSB terminator voltage - Depends on CPU voltage and CPU/FSB clock speed
SB sleep mode voltage - Auto
PCI Expander PLL voltage - Auto
My recommendation is do some reading. Guessing leads to dead hardware.
6GBs smells like mixing modules... Or do you have 3 modules?
First of all, I already stated the frequencies that I wanted in the top post, and fairly clearly at that.
CPU shouldnt be too hard to figure out, as there are very few to choose from.  I'll try to get back to you on that one
I have 5, 7200rpm SATA 3.0 drives.  It sometimes runs with only 4, as one is a hot swap.
My ram IS mixed, unfortunately.  I'm using 2x 1gig sticks, and 2x 2gig sticks.  However, both sets have heatsinks, and are rated at 800mhz, 4-4-4-12, 2t, timings.  (2.1v)
I AM running them in dual channel.
If this helps you suggest voltages please do, If not, then I will just have to start trying using nihilkrist's suggestions.

  • P7N Diamond issue

    Hi,
Have a P7N Diamond, have a few problems with this m/b(not sure where to post this, think its a bios issue):
    - Often get hang-ups, sometimes it returns after a minute...
    - Sometimes it looses connection to a Samsung 1TB harddisc, have tried to change it without any change.
    - Games doesnt run smoothly... get small and very annoying delays in framerate!!
There is not a hardware issue as you can see bellow!! :-p
At the moment I have the v1.3 bios, have the same issues with older bios...
    * Does this m/b have full support for 1TB hdd?
    * Does this m/b have the SATA optical drive issue?
Know that the nvidia chipset have some issue with sata optical drives....
    * Are there any new vga bios... since I have all msi.... thougt I would be able to update it thrue liveupdate!!!
