P7N Diamond / Q6600 / HELP!

Intro
Good Afternoon. I have searched everywhere for information regarding the issues I’m having and haven’t found anything, so I though id ask here. About a year ago I built two computers using the exact same parts (one for me and the other for a friend of mine). My friends build has been running perfect since day one, with no issues or errors. Mine however, has been a problem since I turned it on. I don’t want to post a confusing wall of text, but want to give as many details as possible, so here goes.
Problems
1)   Will not run with optimised settings since first install - Just restarts before starting windows. (Only boots ok when FSB is set to 1333)
2)   Looping Restarts – After powering on it will restart itself between 3-6 times after boot screen, then successfully boots onto windows ok.
3)   Crashing to Desktop/BSOD’s – Mainly runs ok when on desktop/applications/internet. Games are the issue. (Fixed some errors by replacing CMOS Battery. Main BSOD error “Hardware Error – Please contact your manufacturer”
Previous Tests Done
1) Cleared BIOS settings
2) Stripped it down to barebone (outside case), and removed everything It didn’t need to run.
3) Tried changing RAM - Dual/Single Channel – One stick at a time.
4) Memtest, Futuremark, Prime95, GPU-Z, CPU-Z and others.
*Currently have processor on RMA as it died (Have signal to monitor from Graphics Card, but no boot, so testing on the fly is impossible*
NOTE: All drivers are up-to-date, Computer Temperatures are more than low enough

As mentioned earlier, my Q6600 is in the process of RMA so can’t really do any testing with Bios or anything else. Another thing… When on the phone to Intel’s Technicians. They said that due to the board only having 1.8v DIMM’s, they said because my RAM was 2.1v, it is those that are causing all my issues. In relation to the RAM spec on the listed computer configuration, could anyone confirm that? As I asked Corsair before the build and they said it would be fine.
I hope I’ve given all the required details, needed for a conclusion to my problems or even a guess.

Mh, did you mistype something, or are you talking about overclocking when you mention "optimised settings"?  I mean:  FSB 1333 is already higher than the native FSB Speed of a Q6600 (=266 MHz or 1066 MT/s effectively).  Can you explain again what you mean?  Because if you really overclocked the FSB/CPU to 333 MHz FSB CLock Speed (and higher) all your problems may simply be the symptoms of non-stable overclocking settings (which is nothing unusual).

Yes and no.  The native speed of your modules is DDR2-800 @1.8V +/- 0.1V (JEDEC Standard) which means that such a setting is compliant with the industry specifications for DDR2 Memory and should pose no stability risk to the system (given that none of the modules are faulty).
DDR2-1066 on the other hand is an OC rating that requires you to raise the voltage to 2.1V and thereby above industry specifications.  Stability problems @DDR2-1066//2.1V are not unusual.  So in that perspective, the stuff the Intel Technicians pointed out to you is absolutely correct.

  • P7n Diamond + Q6600 = Reboots over and over

    I have a P7n diamond that has been in my system paired with E6850 for a while now and been running no problem.  Well I picked up a Q6600 and put it in and now it reboots everytime when it starts to go into windows.  No errors or anything.. Just poof and reboot..  Will sit in the bios all day long and temp in bios is 21 to 23 celcius.  Anyone have any suggestions for me.  I have put all the bios settings on Auto just trying to get the machine to load windows.  does the same thing with Windows Vista and Windows 7.  Startup screen comes up and churns and right when screen is supposed to switch to windows it reboots...  Thanks for all suggestions...

    Ok I can't stand this beating me.. I'm back with the q6600 and rebooting. no changes helps.  has there been cases where a cpu just won't work with a motherboard??  I put the e6850 back in and boots fines.  I put the q6600 in other system boots fine.  just will not boot on my p7n diamond board.  I've flashed to latest beta 1.3 bios.  I've reset cmos..  i've done everything i know to do and no luck....

  • P7N Diamond: Q6600 to 4.05ghz!! But stability at 3.6ghz?

    Hi all,
    I believe I've obtained the first successful non-extreme Kentsfield Quad bench above 4.0ghz on the P7N Diamond. It can be done.
    The processor is a watercooled Q6600 G0 Batch L737B277 with a VID of 1.2375. The chipset is using the standard circupipe cooling, but I did buy an Antec Spot Cool to blow air over the NB. It seems to be doing a reasonable job.
    Here are my OC settings and voltages:
    Beta BIOS 1.1B4
    Proc: 4.05ghz (450 x 9)
    FSB: 1800 (450 x 4)
    RAM: 900 (450 x 2)
    RAM Timings: 5-5-5-15-2T (sub-timings on auto)
    vCore: Max set in BIOS (haven't benched lower, but it may be possible.)
    vDimm: 2.1
    NB: 1.55
    SB: 1.65
    Gtl REF: 65
    FSB Term: 35
    all other voltages on auto.
    Unfortunately, I'm still having a bit of trouble stabilizing at 3.6ghz. I've cornered it down to the same thing every time. The computer will eventually freeze (not blue screen or reboot, but freeze) at around 10 minutes of Prime 95 or between 2 and 5 minutes of OCCT (RAM stress.)
    My current settings for 3.6ghz stable are as follows:
    Beta BIOS 1.1B4
    Proc: 3.6ghz (400 x 9)
    FSB: 1600 (400 x 4)
    RAM: 800 (400 x 2)
    RAM Timings: 5-4-4-13-2T (default EPP timings)
    vCore: 1.4375 (+2.000v set in BIOS)
    vDimm: 2.1
    NB: 1.4
    SB: 1.55
    Gtl REF: 65
    FSB Term: 35
    My guess is that the issue lies with the NB or SB, with RAM being the third option. I don't think it's the processor, based upon VID, batch, and the type of errors I'm getting (freezes, nothing else.)
    I'm learning more about how NB and SB voltages effect the system, as well as how all of the reference, gtl, and terminator voltages interact (MSI's odd BIOS settings make this all the more difficult.) However, I'm still guessing at places, and without the ability to pinpoint a single voltage that's causing the freezing, it's becoming a bit tiresome. I've tried upping NB to 1.45 and SB 1.6 but can't seem to prevent the freezing. Perhaps its a combination of the two, or perhaps my FSB Terminator voltage is off. If anyone has any ideas on what could be causing this freezing, that would be great going forward.
    Seeing that I can bench at 4.05ghz, I should be able to find stability at 3.6ghz. It's just a matter of time, and as always, further explanation of MSI's unique voltage settings always helps.

    Here's a brief overview of my 3.6 settings. Cpu is a G0 batch L737A702 with a VID of 1.2875, bios A7510NMS.116, C1E and EIST disabled.
    The first screen in cell menu just shows mode to manual, fsb to 1600, and multi at 9. The pci-e freq=107 is just to give me a little help for oc my vid cards so disregard that setting.
    Next you see my voltages. One might assume that cpu VID 1.2875v+.225v increase in bios will mean a vcore of 1.5125 but this isn't the case at all as you will see from H/W Monitor in a moment.
    The H/W Monitor screen is showing me vcore 1.464v and while I'm sure part of this is vdrop, it also leads me to believe that bios may not be setting the initial voltage correctly or that there is some amount of vdroop before the OS is even loaded. Of course that's purely speculation without actual digital multi-meter measurements.
    I can show prime 25.6 stability if need be, I have run it 6hr with similar settings on bios 114 but honestly I'm not really big on hours of stress testing. It cuts into my WCG time too much and I have taken kind of a personal interest in that since my cancer diagnosis 7 weeks ago. 4 cores crunching 24/7 without error and the occasional game of Witcher or Silent Hunter 4 is my idea of stable. You can see the CPU-Z Core Voltage 1.424v 100% load so vdroop is around .04v. You might also note ram timings are tight and CL1. The OCZ Reaper HPC's don't oc worth a damn but they run mighty tight stock. 
    The temps are really something I'm not going to discuss too much. The common question seems to be "which app should I trust?". I'll leave this argument to people who know a lot more about intel thermal specs than I do. The author of Real Temp (unclewebb) said something in a post that stuck with me: If you are Prime stable and have left some head room before TjMax, which you have plenty of, then absolute temperatures don't matter one bit. 50C, 55C, 60C, 65C and even 70C doesn't matter while running Prime as long as you are stable. You are within the Intel spec and you aren't going to hurt anything. With no documentation of TjMax by Intel and no user testing of TjMax for your new processor, absolute temperature is no more than just an interesting number no matter what software you are using to report it.

  • Problem with p7n diamond please help

    i have a new p7n diamond
    i connect  the power supply plugs, hard drives, video card(n260gtx new too), etc
    when i push the power button the processor cooling fan run but the pc do nothing
    don't gave me any beep from a bad connection
    nothing
    it just don't start
    other thing
    when i plug the video card power, the video card cooling fan don't start yet
    please help!

    Dadilo, you have gone to some length but sadly no positive result, but at least you have cleared some of the ifs and buts. i have looked at your mobo bios even so it says it supports your cpu q6600 it seems there has been a few updates (see links, particularly please pay attention to the pointer in pictures). you have these options left to you.
    1- put the pc on it's side and take the 240 volt plug out (no power what so ever) and clear the way from any cables etc.. and remove the mobo battery with a Small screw driver (push the clip to one side the battery pups out)  and   hold it in your Palm for ten second or so then put it back and put everything back make sure the single memory is firmly in place so is the graphic card. then connect the power and all cables etc the power the pc. 
    2-your last option before you give up is try another cpu on the  mobo preferably core 2 duo rather than quad and if you get it working your next move is to update the bios and i do not know how good you are in updating bios???.  if none of these works then sadly the mobo is faulty in my opinion but i may be wrong :

  • P7N Diamond, need help

    Hello, i have built a new machine and now after a few days i think my graphic card died. Computer starts with gpu fan at 100% but thats about it, screen is blank.
    Havent tried to switch graphic card yet, gonna buy a cheap one tomorrow, i suspect the psu but it should be ok, hmm =)
    Anyway my system, i hope any of you can help me out.

    It should be able to handle 41A on +12v1 and +12v2 together and max 530W (52.5A) on all 12V at once.
    I am not very good at explaining in english but the psu should be high quality and was best rated by a swedish oc site.
    Before i bought this i read alot on different sites to find out if i needed 26A on one rail or not and some said it was needed and some said
    it works great with just a high quality psu.
    I have also tried to remove everything except the graphic card, cpu, memory, and tried it with only 1 stick.

    I solved it, thanks for the replies. Dont know what was causing it, i removed the motherboard from the case and it worked.
    But there are still some issues, but i dont know what =) I have tried to overlock also but it isnt going very well, i dont know why its failing if it is the memory or if i dont give enough voltage... i made it boot at 4 ghz and the stress test with Orthos failed when memory was involved 8(
    The thing i dont get is if i choose manual and set the ram memory at 800 mhz, does it stay there when i pick a higher fsb or does it secretly overclock =)
    Also everytime i boot up vista 64, just before the login screen appears, when things work it fades nice to the login screen but when something is wrong it looks like a sick sack or how its spelled, pattern in black before the screen appears, even if i dont overclock at all.
    Does any of you know what voltages that i should stick with? I would like to have the whole bios at manual but i dont know what most of the commands do, like the terminator, gtl settings =)

    im currently trying to overclock my Q6600 to 3.6 but for some reason its not stable..tried dierent voltages and still crash after 5m with OCCT,does anyone know some good setup or ideas to make this work?

    Hi smatos. Could you give us the settings & voltages you have tried so far, & what has been your highest stable OC & settings? In bios Cell Menu, do you have 'Spread Spectrum' disabled?
    What type CPU cooler do you have? Do you have any auxilliary cooling for the Northbridge? On my P7N D., NB heat, & a FSB hole at 1600 +/- 30, was it's biggest obstacle. To relieve the NB heat, the heatsink was removed & reseated with AS5 thermal compound, & a spot cooler put in place. Substantial case air flow is also critical in an aggressive OC.

      If you can, dont use Ntune..it causes more problems than it's worth.  Download the new System Tools, and just install the Performance Tools.  It offers better OC options, including shader sliders and is much more reliable than Ntune was.  Ths only glitch in the Performance Toos, is that you must run your shader at least twice your GPU core speed or it will give you an "invalid setting" message.  Nvidia needs to provide an unlink button, or, just link the sliders.
    Oh, and you should set all your FSB sttings in bios, not in Ntune or Performance tools.

  • Help!! Overclock Q6600 with p7n Diamond Mobo

    Hello All
    Im looking for much needed help to overclock my Q6600 from 2.4 (default) to the highest stable overclock i can reach for my system. With the settings i have given below i can run 3D Mark without crashing..and run games without crashing...but after a certain period of time on a game i crash after about 20 mins of playing. Also i run Prime95 and i get Worker errors after about 10-20 mins.

    Wow.  Some people just really don't get it...
    We all know how to overclock CPUs, of course.  Why are you biting the hand of the arm trying to help you?  I used the P7N Diamond for several months, and also provided a lot of the overclocking tips and hints, along with every beta/performance BIOS MSI released.
    If you want me to do the overclocking for you, and rid you of the experience; hell, I have no problem with that.  The P7N is a simple board to overclock until the NB gets too hot.  Max out the FSB term, don't touch the GTL voltages, and adjust the CPU Vcore only when needed.  If you cannot follow anything I said in the last sentence - go back to stock settings.
    Do you even know how to stability test an overclocked system?
    If you don't want to learn, you're most likely not going to get beyond 3.2 GHz.

  • Users running the P7N Diamond and QX9650 please weigh in. I need help...

    OK, I'll start from the beginning.  I had an EVGA 780i mobo, which ran a Q6600 at 3ghz quite easily.  Well, I decided that I had money to burn so I ordered a QX9650.  It would not work on the EVGA, the cpu voltage and cpu fsb voltage would not adjust no matter what I tried.  So, I popped the cpu into my kids rig, which has a DFI X38 mb and the cpu worked perfectly, voltages adjusted, multiplier adjusted, etc.  During the RMA process to EVGA, I got an MSI P7N Diamond to run SLI with.  Stuck the cpu in it and away I went into Vista 64, all happy.  I had to bump the memory voltage up to 1.95 volts, but that was it.  I then decided to raise the multi from 9 to 10.  I set it, warm booted and tested it in Vista.  100% stable.  2 days later, I attempted to turn my computer on.  No post.  I had to power off/on very quickly to get it to post, at which point I got an error message that the cpu vid had failed or there was a mismatch with the cpu to fsb ratio, hit F1 to enter setup or F2 to load defaults.  I e-mailed MSI and received beta P05 and it was just downhill from there.  I couldn't cold boot at all, stock settings, OC settings, voltages adjusted, it didn't matter.  So back to the shipping bios.  I got a new beta this morning, dated 2/18, and it was the exact same. 
    Issues with both beta's:
    1.  Cannot cold boot.
    2.  Logitech G15 acts erratically prior to entering Vista.
    Things I have tried:
    1.  Raising Vcore.
    2.  Raising NB/SB voltages.
    2.  Raising FSB Terminator voltage.
    Nothing helps.  MSI simply told me not to OC and run at stock and that there was no problem.  Is there anyone else out there that has this cpu and mb?  If so, can you post your experience with it and let me know if there is something I am doing wrong or could try?

    End User 02/19/2008 No change. I cannot even cold-boot at stock settings with this. Also, it still kills my Logitech G15 keyboard randomly. i have to unplug it and plug it back in to get it to power up, and that is only after I boot into Vista. It seems odd that it is only on a cold boot that I have issues and not on warm boots. I am willing to try anything you got at this point!

    End User 02/19/2008 So are you saying that as far as MSI is concerned, there is no issue with the QX9650 and the P7N Diamond motherboard? I am not asking you for advice on hot to OC it, I am asking you if you know of the issue and are looking into it to try and correct it. If you do not think there is an issue and are not going to investigate it, then I will be very disappointed. 
    MSI Tech. 02/19/2008 If there is no problem with standard bios and no OC then you can refer to other website/forum for OC suggestions or settings. MSI does not provide these setting/suggestions since it can cause damage to the components. 
    End User 02/19/2008 Also, I am unable to use the Dual Core center, as I am running Vista 64. It does not load properly when using this OS. 
    End User 02/19/2008 As of now, it boots and runs fine with the shipping bios and no OC. But, why would I have paid such a high premium to get a QX9650, that has an unlocked multiplier, if I cannot use it? Is this strictly an issue with the newer 45nm Intel processors or is it something else? If not being able to use my cpu's unlocked multiplier is "ok", then I may return the board for a refund.

    End User 02/18/2008 Is there a fix on the way or is it just a problem with my hardware? I have it back on the shipping bios and it is at least cold-booting now, as well as my G15 is working. I upped the NB voltage a hair above auto, maybe this has somethinng to do with it?

    End User 02/18/2008 I was way too quick to say everything is OK. I now have cold boot issues aplenty. 9 times out of 10 it will not post on a cold boot, but will warm boot. I have to power off then on real quickly to get it to post at stock speeds. Also, my Logitech G15 started to act erratic with the P05 beta. I am back on the shipping bios until I hear from you. 
    End User 02/18/2008 Thanks you for the beta. I flashed to it, cleared the cmos and set everything back up and now I have a new problem. Even though I have disabled the EIST function in the bios, it still seems to be on. i am using cpu-z version 1.44.1 to monitor the multiplier and it randomly shifts between whatever I set it to and 6. It is even doing it when the system is loaded, ie playing games. Please, help!

    End User 02/18/2008 Everything is stable 100%. But, on my QX9650, I set the multiplier to 10X to run at 10x333=3.33ghz. It was fine until this morning. I turned the computer on and it would not post. I powered down and repowered it up and it siad the cpu vid had failed or errored, hit F1 to enter setup or F2 to load defaults. I entered setup and the multiplier was set back to 9x. I left it there and am ok now. Is there a beta bios that helps out operations with the newest Intel 45nm processors, such as the QX9650?
    I have absolutely no issues in Vista itself, it is 100% stable.  It is only on a cold boot that I have serious issues.  And yes, I got 3 in a row, went to work for a few hours, then came home and bam!  No cold boot.  Also, I don't know how comfortable I am raising the vcore that much, as 1.21-1.25 is the normal operating range.  1.3625 is aweful high.  Now, with the 65nm quads, that is more in the range of what would be needed, but no way should it be necessary to pushh this QX9650 to a meeger 3.33ghz.  As far as temps go, I have the processor watercooled, so no worries there.  I am away from home now until Saturday morning, so I can't test anything until the weekend.

  • Help overclocking E8500 on P7N Diamond

    Hi to all!
    Can you help me to overclock my system, please?
    My workstation:
    - E8500
    - MSI P7N Diamond bios v1.2B2
    - 8 GB Kingstod PC6400
    - 2 SLI  nvidia 8800 gts 320 mb
    - ctrl DELL PERC 4E/DC
    - 2 scsi hd 300 gb (not in raid)
    - 5 hd sata 2 (5 x 1 Terabyte)
    - Windows xp 64 sp2
    with the default vcore (1.1) the system boot and load win64 at 1550 fsb and multipler by 9.5x; if I try fsb 1600 or 1604 (for the supposed fsb hole) the system does not boot. I've tried to up the vcore and the 8x multipler with the same result.
    I don't think that is a cpu limit (all e8500 go to 4 ghz), but my inesperience to set up the parameters on the "cell menu", like all voltage parameters.

    What were your voltages? You're going to need a lot of nb volts with all that ram in there. The only thing I have is some screens from e8400 bench runs. I'll put them here so you can look. These were with beta bios 1.21. I was pushing voltages quite hard for this although I can't remember the exact numbers. That mobo doesn't have that cpu now. I'm running a q6600 in the P7N diamond now. I may have some photos of those bios settings though stored on my drives, I'll try and look tomorrow.

  • P7N Diamond - Voltages all greyed out? - Please help

    Hi I have the following
    I have just flashed my P7n to 1.16 bios using the flashing tool. I want to change the Memory Voltage to 2.10v as per spec but all the voltages are greyed out in the bios.  Please help.
    I am running -
    P7N Diamond with a Q6600
    4 gigs of Corsair DDR2 XMS2-6400C4
    8800 GT
    and a 550watt PSU
    Any help would be most welcome!

    Hi all i would like to overclock my cpu now after having the P7N for over a month now and running everything standard.  I have DDR2 800 Geil Memory which is running at 6-6-6-18.  I have read that you need my VID which is 1.2750v.     anyway thanks for replying, i was just wondering, i'm played around so much trying to get a stable 3.6 and i could get it to run stable for days on end until after like 10-15 minutes of gaming it would freeze, i could even run 3dmark and everything was fine.
    the thing i don't understand is what am i supposed to set the fsb terminator to? I know the gtlreff volts have percentages to refer to but i have found nothing on the fsb term.

  • Troubles hitting 3.0ghz on Q6600 and P7N Diamond

    Hi all,
    I'm kinda new to the whole over clocking thing but after reading a few posts it looks like my system should be able to hit 3.0ghz on the Q6600 G0 without much problem. The only problem is when I disable the normal over clocking stuff and set my FSB to 1333 with my voltages up a bit my system won't post. Below are my specs:
    MSI P7N diamond Bios V1.2
    Q6600 Kentsfield G0 @ 2.40Ghz with a default voltage of 1.280V
    8GB (4 sticks) of OCZ Fatal1ty Edition DDR2 1006 (PC2 8500) - OCZ2F10664GK
    Nvidia 260 GTX.
    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Seeing is believing! Since you have the most recent official bios release, within the forum, some posts may exist addressing some beta releases that might increase the memory parameters. Not sure if the P07 performance bios may help, but it also may be worth looking into. You have a lot of RAM. The mem. controller is probably pretty stressed as well when all the slots are full, & may need a boost in V's. Have you tried testing with just 1 stick of RAM in slot #1?
    Edit: Almost forgot, if you do decide to flash your bios, make sure all the settings are returned to a stable stock, & use the forum USB Flash Tool.

    Hey.  I fully understand the settings as far as frequencies go, but am a total voltage newb.  No matter what I do I cant seem to get a stable vista load up with my voltage settings. 
    Please help me by providing suggested voltage settings for my hardware.
    CPU - Intel Core2Quad Q9450
    RAM - 6 gigs of DDR2-800 rated at 2.1V
    VIDEO - Dual Nvidia Geforce 8800GT's in SLI
    MOBO - MSI P7N Diamond, based off the Nvidia Nforce 780i SLI chipset
    My cooling is sufficient, and I have the BIOS version 1.2
    I also turned off all of the overclocking not friendly functions, example: spread spectrum, and DOT, ETC....
    I am trying to run my CPU at 3.2 GHZ (400 mhz before multiplier)
    my settings I want are (as shown in the P7N bios)
    System Clock Mode - Manual
    FSB clock - 1600
    DRAM clock - 800
    Please help me by providing the proper voltages for my setup

Also, use cpu-z to check on your actual voltage and make sure you don't raise it beyond 1.3625 (I think that's right, it's 1.36something anyway)
    Thanks for the tips.  The reason I wanted to jump straight to FSB 1600 is because the MSI p7n is really picky and only likes 1:1 ratios. 
    My "sufficient cooling" is an aftermarket heatsink, high performance thermal paste, and MASSIVE airflow through my case.  If you want specifics, its the Scythe Zipzang

    My recommendation is do some reading. Guessing leads to dead hardware.
    6GBs smells like mixing modules... Or do you have 3 modules?
    First of all, I already stated the frequencies that I wanted in the top post, and fairly clearly at that. 
    CPU shouldnt be too hard to figure out, as there are very few to choose from.  I'll try to get back to you on that one
    I have 5, 7200rpm SATA 3.0 drives.  It sometimes runs with only 4, as one is a hot swap. 
    My ram IS mixed, unfortunately.  I'm using 2x 1gig sticks, and 2x 2gig sticks.  However, both sets have heatsinks, and are rated at 800mhz, 4-4-4-12, 2t, timings.  (2.1v)
    I AM running them in dual channel.
    If this helps you suggest voltages please do, If not, then I will just have to start trying using nihilkrist's suggestions.
