P7N platinum sli and qx9650 overclock issues

Hey all,
Just wondering if someone could help me with overclocking my qx9650 on my P7N platinum sli.
I have tried throwing all kinds of voltages at the cpu, fsb, and nb and I still can't run stable for over a few seconds. I thought it might be due to a fsb hole and have tried a range from 1550-1650. My goal is to get it at 400mhz(1600 in bios) and get a 5:4 ratio with my ram at 1000.  I tried updating to the p06 performance bios from ami 1.3 and still can't get it stable. I don't want to end up frying my board. I got it to run stable at 350 for an hour in prime 95 but would really like to achieve 1600.  at 350x8.5 for 1500 my temps did not get above 54c under full load
I am not looking for a huge oc, just get to 9x400 for a 3.6 ghz clock speed for 24/7 use. I ran prime 95 for 5 hours with everything at stock so I know it is not a bad cpu, ram, mobo. I also ran memtest86+ at stock and every test passed. I have d.o.t disabled, eist disabled, and spread spectrum disabled.
Memory timings right now are 5-5-5-18-2T at 2.1v and memtest+ passed with those settings at speed 800mhz.
any suggestions would be great

just wanted to let everyone know that i got it stable at 3.75ghz for 26 hours in prime 95. Don't know why but it still won't boot from 1550-1650 (must be a FSB hole or something) so i just put it at 1500(375) with a 10 multiplier and ram at 1000 for a 3:4 fsb:ram ratio.

    3. 2x2GB KINGSTON DDR2 RAM
    4. XFX NVIDIA 9500 GT 1GB

CAN YOU PLEASE PROVIDE ME WITH THE SOLUTION,ITS A BRAND NEW PC
THANK YOU ALL FOR THIS GREAT FORUM.....

Remove mainboard from case and try running with just absolutely necessary components. Try reseating cpu and check if heatsink has proper contact to cpu's heatspreader. Try running setup with just one mem stick.
Also provide full specs of psu as you can see in my signature.
From the writing you reported (A7380NMS V1.0) it seems your board has bios V1.0 installed while your cpu would at least require V1.2 or higher (http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=prodcpu2&prod_no=1373&maincat_no=1#menu).
Possibly you might need to lend an older Core2 cpu to install bios V1.2 or ask the retailer to flash it for you. First step is of course to try eliminating other possible sources for the issue as listed above.

  • Difference between K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI and K8N-SLI Platinum

Hey guys.... I have one question and i hope you can help me.
I'm about to get an MSI SLI Platinum motherboard, but it seems that there are two versions, the K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI and the K8N-SLI Platinum.
What is the real difference between them? As i can see in the manual, the Neo4 version has the additional SATA2 and Gbit LAN controller.
Anyone: Does your K8N-SLI board have 4 or 6 SATA2 ports? and 1 or 2 LANs?
At this picture  http://www.midtdata.dk/asp/index.asp?varernr=K8N-SLI-PLAT&goto=productinfo&mainfunc=link I can see that there are 6 blue SATA connectors (lower right corner), and 2 LAN ports left to the LPT port... But the description says 4 SATA and 1 LAN, and so says the manual.
To all owners of this mobo:  Does this picture look like your K8N-SLI Platinum or does it look like your K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI ?

d/l a raid manual and all should be clear

Now i finally got a different report back from windows error reporting saying a "Non Compatable BIOS is the cause " here is the error report screeny i took and uploaded to flickr  http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3538/3349882297_4a3194e3df_b.jpg and this is another screeny in flickr of my BIOS in MSI Info View http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3445/3349882397_ef282a33d2_b.jpg , i believe i have the newest BIOS installed and the correct one also and have been running that version for along time . When i first setup this system i could not get my Q9550 to boot at all with this mobo till i updated the bios to the P0B6 but have never had it stable from BSOD . I suggest that you clear CMOS and use flash it to the BIOS v1.1 under the MSI website for your board and see how it goes.

LOL thats funny !!!!!  1.1 is what came installed on the mobo and is not compatable with the Q9550 it will never boot to bios using 1.1 with a quad core ! Thats the first problem i had thats why i explained all the steps i had to go through to get this mobo / cpu to boot with the help from MSI tech support !

  • P6N Platinum SLI/C2D e6600 Overclock

I have a situation (i might not, thats why im posting here lol)
    Currently my e6600 (week 09A) is overclocked to 3.2gHz (356x9) RAM set 1:1 @ 712, 4-4-4-12-2T timings (Patriot extreme ddr2 800 PC6400)
I have disabled all unnecesary BIOS features according to other threads for this board (spread spectrum, etc)
PSU is a thermaltake toughpower 700w modular, and of course the P6N platinum SLI.
    My volts are as follows:
    1.400 vcore
    1.35 nbridge
    4% fsb vtt
    2.2 RAM
    Everything else I left alone.
At these volts/frequencies I am able to get overnight orthos stable, intel TAT idle temps 33c, load 50-51c
My question is voltage.  I should be able to get 3.2 at les than 1.4 vcore, yet even if i drop it one step, the comp freezes after an hour of orthos.  I am seeing my voltages drop to 1.376 - 1.384 under 100 load, is that alot of vdroop?  If it is, is there a pencil mod for this board, or could it me my psu thats the problem?
Also, if i up the fsb vtt, will that allow me to drop the vcore?
Sorry for the long thread, but I am very confused

Nope, every CPU is different, because some people get it like that doesn't mean you will.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI and BIOS goofiness

A couple nights ago I figured I'd flash my K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI to the latest BIOS version, since I hadn't touched it in over a year. I was using 3.1, and I decided to use the 3.A. Big mistake. Computer boots fine, but immediately bluescreens as soon as Windows tries to load. After diddling around on my brother's computer trying to make a bootable CD, I manage to get back to a state where I can flash again, and try the 3.7. Same problem...bluescreen on Windows startup. At that point I just gave up and went back to 3.1, ignoring the 3.3 and 3.2 BIOSes.
Is anyone else having issues trying to flash the more recent BIOSes?
(I just recently found out that MSI's US site doesn't have a complete list of available BIOSes, while the Taiwanese site does. I might have to give 3.9 and 3.8 a try.)
EDIT: My system specs are in the link in my sig.

Ok, quick update. I just spent about half an hour with 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.7, 3.8, 3.9, and 3.A. None of them work except 3.1...they all bluescreen while starting Windows. I made sure to clear the CMOS completely, yes I left APIC/MPS settings the same (they've always been on default so that hasn't been an issue), and I tried the various safe modes.
    Here's the error code given on the BSOD: 0x0000007B (0xF78A6528, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
A quick search on the 0x0000007B error code gives a fairly lengthy MS KB article, but no real solution. I'm at a loss as to why 3.1 works great but nothing else does.

  • NVidia's nForce drivers on P7N Platinum SLI

I just wanted to query the forum and other nForce mobo users to see if they had any problems with using the nForce chipset drivers provided by nVidia on their website. I currently use the chipset drivers provided on the MSI website for the P7N Platinum mobo (750i northbridge, 430i southbridge) and they have outperformed all other drivers supplied by nVidia, including the latest 15.45 package (difference of 500-800 marks in PCMark05). Is this common on nForce boards? Are there certain parts of the nVidia drivers that don't work with the P7N, which would make MSI have to create its own driver package for the board? Anybody else have issues with nVidia's nForce drivers?

I have a P6N, the slightly older brother of your board and yes I had troubles with one of their Nforce drivers in Vista.
Like you im running the ones from MSI, somehow they do the trick much better.
They are older, but who cares
Updated it once, but had to roll back due to all sorts of troubles, so íll stick with them.
In Win 7, im running the 15.35, cause MSI has no drivers for Win 7 for my board and so far, no issues.

  • **!! SOLVED !!** MSI P7N Platinum SLI Stuck on Splash Screen

Okay, so I got a bunch of new hardware for Christmas and finally the rest for my birthday this weekend and I am stumped.  I got all installed and when booting, I get the MSI splash screen with the spaceship and nothing else...just stays there on the splash.  Only one beep like my other MSI boarded PC and no more after that.  I have tried reseating all components including CPU, ram, graphics card and still no luck.  Also have tried with mainboard out of case on the box with all connectors plugged in.  My hardware is as follows:
    MSI P7N Platinum mainboard
    Intel E8400 Wolfdale
    Corsair DDR2 2 x 1gb
    nVidia PCI-E 260 fx card
I have all else unplugged to eliminate as much as possible.  PLEASE help me salvage this because I have to say its been the most disappointing birthday ever this year LOL. Thanks guys!!!!
P.S.  Also tried reseting CMOS many times including overnight unplugged and mainboard battery removed.

OK everyone...problem is fixed.  As u all thought, the S-Spec of my CPU was not supported my the BIOS version (1.1) that the Mainboard P7N comes with...so the way I remedied the situation was to find (and purchase) a cpu that is on the cpu support page for mainboard that is supported by bios version 1.1.  I also must note, do not go by just the model number, go only by S-Spec number.  Once my Intel Celeron D 3.3 came today, started pc with a botable floppy (made by windows on my other machine) and flashed bios the old fashioned way with floppy disk.  After flash to version 1.3, put my CPU back in and what do you know...IT WORKS!!!   So got Windows installed and have been stable for about 6 hours now.  Thanks all who contributed...I love you all!!!  LOL

  • Msi K9N2 Platinum SLI and Windows Server 2003 r2 32 bit edition

Does anyone know or have tried to get this board to work on server 2003 32 bit edition. I seem to get past the raid part but the realtek 8211bl and audio are giving me fits. Any links to good drivers would be appreciated.
    Spec of system:
    Amd 9950 Quad
    4 gig memory
    Msi K9N2 Platinum SLI
    2 500 gig sata

Ok overall solution this board works awesome with Windows Server 2003 Enterprise R2 with Sp 2.
Here are a few tricks for the Co processor controller, Sm Bus, Audio and finally the networking controller.
When you finally get windows loaded. Make sure you put Service Pack 2 or 3 on before u install drivers.
The raid drivers are simple for the 32 bit version use the xp ones and load both raid drivers during setup. Requires 2 floppys or Slipstream disk.
    http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=driverfile&dno=7067&i=2
Once you get windows loaded and Sp 2 or better on. Stick in your windows vista driver disk in. Once there do not install anything.
Goto device manager and update drivers on all that are with the yellow ? excpet the networking drivers and just do an automatic search and boom your done. It will also ask you if you want to enable your audio at this time. Do so but do not reboot untill u finish installing all drivers but networking. Than reboot pc
Last part is for networking card. We need you to be in safe mode for this. So once u install all drivers and start reboot hit F8 and goto safe mode. Once in safe mode take out vista driver disk and put in xp driver disk. Goto device manager and update driver on network controller and let it do an automatic search and it will installl it. It will say it needs to be rebooted to work. Go ahead and reboot and your networking card will work.
Probably simpliar solution. But just wanted to give my help.

  • K9N2 Platinum Sli and onboard

quick question , don't know if this will work , could i hook up a second monitor to the onboard vga , so i can have sli and dual monitors? I have read that you can run both if you add the third vid , but would i be able to do it with the onboard as the 3rd?

ok no one wants to have fun with this one?
so far , 180.48 drivers support dual mon and sli , yet for some unknown reason , i can't get both 2 work after a reboot. I can get a 22 lcd and a 19 lcd both on dvi (digital) to work in sli after changing and detecting and screwing around for about 30 minutes , and it works great BUT soon as i reboot , the second monitor goes away and thats the end of it . i have tried it with just the 2 9800gt's and also with the 9800gt's and the igpu .kinda screwey but hey , light fun for a saturday. no crashes or anything and gives me something to do while i fix the neighbor's pc. now i can get dual and sli to work , after reboot , if and only if , my second monitor uses the dvi-vga adapter and then it works fine. strange i say . works for me , cause the plan for the 2nd one is to just shpw temps and other monitoring apps while i game , plus the random page or 2 off the net. doesnt need to show pure digital bliss to do its job . I just find all of this rather odd , but hey , its nvidia for yah......
    any thoughts?

  • P7n platinum: memory errors when overclocking

I have a p7n sli platinum and I'm trying to get my e8400 overclocked. The chip is stable at 4150 mhz and did prime 95 small ffts for an hour with no problem.  However, games crash and the vista memory diagnostic shows errors. I have ddr2 800 memory that runs at 4-4-4-12, so it should have some room to overclock with looser timings. However, overclocking it and running it at a 1:1 ratio still gives errors.
The really bad part though, is that if I run my memory not at 1:1 so it can stay at its 800mhz rated speed, I still get errors. Does anyone know if this motherboard has a problem running memory not at 1:1 even though it's supposed to be able to? I've tried messing with all sorts of voltages and timings. What are the chances getting some 1066 ram and running it at 1:1 would fix the problem?

Alright, I got the rest of my stuff listed. I don't think there's anything wrong with the memory because it's perfectly fine running at 800mhz when the FSB is 400, and I tested it not too long ago when building the system for my q6600. As for the slots, I have tried slots 1&3, slots 2&4, and all slots full with roughly the same results.
Now that I think about it, it's more likely the board causing me to FAIL than the memory itself. There's no reason the memory should have problems running at 800 or below regardless of what I have the FSB set at. I did stumble across a post saying that this board doesn't like memory not on the compatibility list when overclocking, and I don't think the patriot is on the list. Any ideas on if corsair dominator could run on this board at its rated 1066 speed? Also, do you still think I should update from the p04 bios?
    edit:voltages are
    VTT: 1.4
Vcore: +.250   (for around 1.35 total under load after vdroop)
    NB: 1.4
    SB: auto

  • K8N Neo and SATA overclocking issues?

I'm thinking of getting some SATA Adapters for my PATA drives to help improve airflow in my K8N Neo Platinum.
I do have a few questions though.
I've been reading some threads about various issues regarding SATA like corruption of data when overclocking FSB.
I'm currently running 245 FSB 1:1 with the 1.42b2 BIOS.
First of all, will the SATA adpaters slow down my drives?
Will I experience any corruption or any other issues with using SATA (and adapters) with my drives?
    Thx for sharing.

Don't bother doing what you are thinking...
as for SATA, it has the ability to be faster than IDE, but because of the drivers it doesn't have a speed advantage so much right now.  The only SATA drives I would get would be raptors, which I have one...otherwise I would go IDE

  • K8N Platinum Video and S-ATA issues

    hey,
here is my problem: i bought some hardware 3 weeks ago, including:
    A64 3800+ (Venice), MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum (MS-7125), Leadtek PX6800 GT TDH (265MB), Be Quiet! 450 Watt Titanium S1.3
in exchange for my old system (2500+, Abit K7N, ATi Radeon 9800SE AiW, 320W Enermax PSU)
the hardware change went great, had no errors after the exchange, windows xp (sp2) worked for 2 weeks. though, some things are errorous like the nForce eth being detected but no drivers installed, nForce raid not being detected - stuff like that probably resulting from a missing format c: and really clean install.
now things get quite strange. a friend of mine gave me 2 of his s-ata hdds (both maxtor, one 160gb and the other 200gb) - after plugging them onto the nforce s-ata raid, i was still able to get into the bios (at this time it was the biosversion the board shipped with) but the keyboard was locked (or the pc froze after entering the bios - can't tell for sure). unplugged the drives - and it was working again.
let's get to the main problem. after the problems above i thought "well, ok, let's reset the cmos, maybe i configured it wrong" so i shut down my pc and pushed the "clear cmos" button - then i did a normal boot, i heared the "beep", everything was just fine - but my TFT stayed black. i had a similar situation on my old board, so i disconnected the psu and removed the battery for 10 seconds. boot: display worked again. i immediately checked my bios (which was indeed resetted) but did not change anything. reboot -> black screen. now, the funny thing is.. the gfx card got 2 dvi and 1 s-video output (one dvi and s-video were connected) so i checked my tv - guess what, i saw the POST  now i knew the board was "working" and my assumptions of which the black screen results in a crashed videocard/mobo were wrong. i sat there and watched windows xp boot up - and suddenly (after the xp vga drivers have been loaded i guess) my tft displays the image!
now this is VERY odd and tbh i really don't know what to say. anyways, i started msi liveupdate and downloaded/installed the latest official bios update (via winflash because i don't have a floppy anymore) to see if that might fix something. it didn't.
and now here i am, desperate and confused because i don't know whether or not it's a mobo or gfx issue - all i know is that it suddenly appeared after the cmos clear (sadly there's no "description" of whether you should press that button when the pc is shut off, psu is disconnected, mobo is running its post whatever) and i can't find a logical reason for this behaviour
to add another detail to the story, after i found out the video output was sent via s-video, i tried all combinations (dvi1 connected, dvi2 not, s-video not / dvi1 not, dvi2 connected, s-video not / dvi1 + 2 not, s-video connected / etc.) but the only source i can get the post from (until WinXP loads) is the s-video out.
i think maybe it could be the gfx card's bios, which loads up BEFORE the post begins (leadtek welcome screen, ram counts itself -> post -> os) but i'm not sure about it either
    ANY help is very appreciated
*edit* i forgot to mention: it worked before! after hitting this nifty little button, the display problems began...

  • Xpower 2 SLI and C-state issues

    Hi there,
unfortunately faced a couple of not critical but annoying problems.
First of all it is an SLI trouble. Every time I switch off my PC and then try to switch it on there is no video output - the monitor just stays black while PC normally boots up, I can hear sound when windows loads but no video output. The only way to get video back is to take out a power cord or switch off and on the PSU or to switch off and on UPS. Well, I usually shut down UPS when PC is not needed so I do not face troubles on first boot a day, but sometimes you just need to switch on and off not through reboot. Btw with reboot there is no such problem. This doesn't happen when there is only one card.
Secondly, looks like somethings wrong with C-states or my hardware. When C1 is enabled I get high-voltage noise coming out of CPU socket. Noise remains only at zero load and if C-state is switched off - no sound. I've seen someone here with same issue but on another board, however, no solution was provided besides contacting MSI...
I've come across these troubles on all bioses from 1.5 to 2.6, so, any advice would be apreciated.
    My system:
    3930k
    xpower 2
    Hynix-1 4gb 1600x8

Yep, it is multi-rail, well, will have an opportunity to test with single rail in a couple of weeks I guess. My mistake, it is C1E that makes the CPU sound sick, generally I don't need power saving and turbo boost at all as even 3.8 is not always enough for MEgui) Just curious
Yes, both cards were tested separately

  • MSI P7N Platinum SLI 750i freezes, even in Safe mode

I have had this board for about a year and a half. My sig should show the specs. I installed 8 gigs of G.Skill memory about 4 months ago, and everything has run great until about 3 weeks ago when I started to get random freezes. The monitor is still showing what was up, but the keyboard and mouse stop responding, as well as all other controls. I have had error logs analyzed and been told I may have a bad video driver, so I deleted it and let Win 7 install its own, and froze again. I logged into Safe Mode, it froze. I ran Memtest86+, machine froze while running it, then on reboot showed errors on the G.Skill memory, all 4 sticks. I put my old memory back in, still freezes. In fact, it sometimes freezes during the POST, when nothing but the BIOS is running.
Sometimes the machine will boot up and run for anything from 2 min to 30 min, then freeze. Sometimes, when I reboot it, it will not post at all, but just show a black screen. If I let it sit for 5 to 10 min it seems to boot again, but inevitibily freezes again. I got one error indicating a BIOS problem (BIOS checksum not equal) but only once.
I am afraid to flash the BIOS, as a freeze then will kill the board. The freezes during memtest and POST indicate a hardware problem, and having 6 memory sticks go bad (two previous ones went bad) also indicates a bad board. Running HWMonitor shows no fluctuation in voltages or any high temps, so I am baffled.
    Anyone have any ideas?

You don't need to connect HDD at all.
Get Live Windows or Linux  CD - one that has lots of testing utilities.
    Check BIOS - frequencies/timings/voltages.
Well, the HDD is not the only problem. The only PSU available would power the MOBO, but cannot power my video card, and the board has no on-board video. I only own one PCIe card, so I am out of luck there. I did turn the machine on several times with a multi-meter connected to several 4-pin Molex connectors, and the power was correct and consistant (12.26v to 12.28v, no fluctuations over .01v during or after start up and 5.01v to 5.03v and 3.3v all the same). I know testing with the multi-meter does not show it under load, and is not the best test, but it is all I can manage.
On the Windows 7 forum, someone suggested this site  http://www.badcaps.net/pages.php?vid=5
Several items here caught my attention:
    Motherboard fails to POST.
    Memory Test Fails.
Fails to fully boot (or even install) Operating System.
    System randomly and frequently freezes.
BSoD or hard freeze under heavy drive activity (Either RAID, SCSI, or standard ATA). (This is questionable, the HD light is on, but I cannot hear it running)
Resetting the system after a freeze and the system will not repost.
(You have to completely power down then power back up.)
A physical inspection of the board shows no leaking or bulging capacitors, although a couple are not perfectly perpendicular to the board.
I am beginning to think the board is bad, and I found a good replacement on e-bay (NEW board) for only $90. It is selling rather well and with only 4 left I am inclined to get it before it disappears. This is the board:

    Opinions?
