P7N SLI FI Issues. DOA?

Hey how's it going. I joined this forum hoping some knowledgeable person can help me out.
First off, system Specs:
MSI P79 SLI-FI MoBo NVIDIA 750i SLI
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 Yorkfield 2.5Ghz
4GB (2 x 2GB Sticks) G.Skill memory DDR2 1066
XFX GeForce 800GT 512MB GDDR3 PCI.E 2.0 16x
and two Excelstor 80GB SATA-II HDDs
Here's my issue:
I Installed all the software properly while properly grounded. Installed all cables and power supply (Which is 530W). When I first turned on the computer everything seemed to be running fine. It gave me the error for bad CMOS you get on the first boot. I went into the BIOS to make sure everything was properly detected and to set up a RAID 0 with my two SATA drives. I saved all changes and exited BIOS. Then. Nothing. Screen went black and stayed that way. Monitor finally told me there was no signal even though the computer was still on. So I waited about five minutes and decided it was never going to do anything. I manually turned the computer off. Waited about 10 seconds then turned it back on. Nothing. I got very worried. So I tried restarting it several different times. Then it randomly worked again. After that it seemed like about every third to fourth time I would power up the computer it would display to the monitor correctly, but the other times it would not. I kept having the same issue so I tried to trouble shoot. I swapped the vide card and put it in my friends computer, it booted no problems. Tried his XFX 9600GT in my build, same issue I was having earlier. Since my memory isn't specifically listed as compatible on the website for this board I tried his OCZ chips. Same issue (by the way, whenever my computer would post it would check the full 4GB of RAM just fine). I completely unplugged my SATA drives and everything else, leaving only the motherboard, processor, video card, memory, keyboard, and mouse plugged in. Tried again. Same issue. Even tried it without anything except the video card mobo and procesor. No luck.
Now I'm thinking what I've got ahold of is a DOA board as it was shipped from NewEgg. Is there anything else I can do to verify that the board is in fact the problem? The board does get power and all of the plugs are in the corect ports (I've built several computers in the past so I am fairly knowledgeable... I at the very least know how to read the manual).
Also, I've noticed this board has an 8 pin power supply to the CPU where my friends ASUS board only has a 4 pin connector. There was even a plastic cover covering four of the slots on this motherboard when I got it. Should I have plugged in all 8 pins or only the 4 (my power suply supports both options)? When I read the manual I was under the impression that it needed all 8 so I stuck with that.
Next question: I can't for the life of me figure out what Spread Spectrum is or what it does... It was enabled by default. Is this good, bad, or indifferent?
Finally: If it's not a DOA board, do you think any of the BIOS updates would help in any way? (I haven't been able to check the BIOS version since in the last 25 boot attempts none have worked [the problem seems to be getting worse.])
Thanks for any and all help. Smiley

Yes I meant 8800GT sorry, the keyboard on my laptop is finicky sometimes.
And I did already try all of those shoring issues listed.
I didn't think the PSU info would matter too much but here ya go: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817152028 that's the newegg site that has all the info on exactly what I have.
Also, bababooey, it's nice to hear someone else has similar issues. I'll be working on it some more tonight and I'll definitely check the bios and make sure it is current. And while I've built several computers and understand most of the bios, I've never had to set the voltage levels at all so is there a good source of information as to what "proper" voltage settings should be?
Also, I'm still not sure what spread spectrum even does. I left it enabled since that's the default, might it help if I disabled it?

  • P7N SLi MAJOR ISSUES

This board is 1 year and a few days old.
On 1 year and 5 days my motherboard started acting up... The computer would not post at all, no matter what I did. I took out all my RAM and had only 1 stick in. I tried different hard drives and different cables. I unplugged everything from the power supply and only had the motherboard and video cards plugged in and it would just not work. After leaving it for a few minutes and coming back, the computer magically turned on. However when it was posting and performed the self check on the RAM it reported an odd MB count of 3463 when I obviously have 4GB and 3463 is not a 2^X number. The computer would post, but constantly freeze during this and would not get past anything, it wouldn't even get into the Windows loading screen. Upon performing minor adjustments in the bios and clearing the CMOS the computer acted no differently, and after about 10 restarts the computer booted half way into loading Windows 7 x64 before it BSOD. Upon another few boots the computer would load into Windows and play a game such as Wolfenstein, 3D Mark 06 or Prime95 but all are unstable. The computer now idles fine, but I cannot run Prime 95 without receiving rounding errors or crashing of the computer entirely - sometimes the computer would completely turn off just with a black screen, other times it would get BSODs, or just lock up with BUZZZZING sounds coming from the speakers.
I have tested each Ram stick individually via Memtest and check out fine.
I have removed all non-essential fans and hard drives.
I have removed the SLi 9800 GT video card and only use 1 Primary 9800 GT video card.
If I test the computer whilst it is on with Prime 95 either an hour after or many hours after booting the computer is still unstable. I may play a game for an hour or so, and then randomly the computer would either BSOD, Blank Screen, or just Freeze. Each time the computer may or may not make a buzzing sound, it is completely random.
I was watching a movie on it a few nights ago and all of a sudden my sound also stopped working. My sound is supplied via the onboard SPDIF interface.
I thought it could be some voltages or frequencies being adjusted wrong. I went into my bios and also set everything to default, even though it already was. 800Mhz for ram, 1066mhz for CPU. Computer was still unstable. I also increased minor some voltages to see if that would help stabilize, this did not help.
I cannot find out what the problem is, everything is running at stock and the computer has never been exposed to lots of heat or overclocked. I am thinking this board has decided to die, quite early. I have read on other forums people have had issues with the RAM slots on this motherboard coming loose and causing these problems.
    Specs:
    P7N SLi Platinum
    Intel Q6600 G0
    4x1GB Kingston HyperX PC8500 DDR2
    2x ASUS nVidia GeForce 9800 GT 512MB
    SuperFlower 750W PSU
    2x  320GB WD 7200 RPM HD
    1x 1TB WD 7200 RPM HD
    1x MSI DVD Burner

Red Faction Guerilla - random BSOD's
Counterstrike Source - random BSOD's + black screen and restarts
Powerdvd - watching a movie during it sound went 'buzz' then no sound, even if i tried to disable and enable the sound card - i had hard reset the computer to get it back
Anything that essentially stresses the RAM and CPU usually present a BSOD or random restart, if I let it just idle for a day or so with say a browser window and Word open it doesn't crash.
Currently I am running the motherboard with 800Mhz instead of 1066Mhz ram speed and Prime has been running almost 3 hours without any calculation errors. The system seems to be much more stable at 800Mhz instead of 1066Mhz which my Ram is rated at. I know the motherboard supports 800Mhz and does support higher speeds unofficially but many people on other forums overclock way beyond this without issues. The reason why I am confused is because it was running for so long before I had any issues.
Although this would suggest something like a failing power supply when these issues only do occur under load, the reason this does not add up is because:
A:) It happened extremely suddenly, the computer has not shown any signs of wear.
B:) It only becomes unstable now at 1066Mhz ram - 800Mhz appears to be fine thus far.

  • New P7N SLI Platinum Boot Issue with PS/2 Keyboard [Solved but RAID problem now]

This issue taken me back !!!! Never thought I might face issue with a PS/2 Keyboard.
Here it is.. I just assembled my new system...
    P7N SLI Platinum Motherboard
    E8400 CPU
EVGA 256-P2-N751-TR GeForce 8600 GT Video Card
    Creative Soundblaster Audio Card
So, before I boot, I connected good old PS/2 Keyboard. The POST Screen comes up that says Press DEL to enter BIOS Setup... but then, it reboots.. indefinitely... I have no idea why it does that. However, if I boot the PC with no PS/2 Keyboard connected, POST screen comes up and that's it.. (no reboot). So, you see, I cannot proceed further in anyway.... I cannot go beyond POST without a keyboard, but then with the keyboard it reboots indefinitely... kinda catch 22 situation
Any suggestion / ideas that anyone can offer here???

Hello Folks... it took long time to "solve the issue that had to begin with"....
I purchased a cheapo Celeron processor to get into  the BIOS and update it... but it didn't even work... I couldn't boot at all. So, I called MSI and they asked me to RMA it. They replaced my MOBO with the latest BIOS - which was good news
So, now, I'm able to boot  - good news...
Now, this is an upgrade for me.... from my previous MOBO. My boot drive was RAIDed (RAID 0). So, now, I will have to RAID my drives again and run Win XP repair. I was able to RAID my drives and all good... now, I went into Windows installation and did F6 to install NVIDIA Raid.... but, here is my problem, when the prompt asks me to input the floppy drive, and when I did it.... it re-prompts me to put the floppy drive again... I see that the floppy drive is read... but, for some reason it doesn't detect the files in there properly....  I downloaded nVidia C72+MCP55 SATA RAID / AHCI Driver (For floppy driver) for windows xp 32-bit and copied the sataraid folder contents into the floppy. Now, here I am stuck again....
    Anybody experienced this problem?

OK.... last year in november i posted some issues with bios updateing , i still got em.
I made a windows 98 bootdisk on a usb flash drive to flash my bios , bios event good without any errors while flashing , but im still getting bsod, freeze even when comp is idle , playing small 2d games like warcraft 3 will make system crash within 2-12mins.
i tried everything from voltage ajustments to disabling various stuff like eist/spread/hpet and pressing f4 for hidden cpu features nothing helps , i resently installed a gtx260 card cause i thought that might help , replaced psu with a new one a silverpower 850w , in november when i wrote my last post i had issues getting the ram modules to work properly , and have been battling with this issue since , btw when using program called TEST MY HARDWARE it says bios version -ASUS- 200811119 bios date 11/19/08 same time i swicthed from a asus motherboard to this p7n , whats going on ......
    here´s my spec.

regards darksinner /ps it also crashes when looking at bios sometimes.....

I did write psu specs silverpower 850w.
i used the msi download link for the bios , wich i also in the post.
    msinfo32 says Amercan megatrends Inc. v.1.3 19-11-2008.
    postscreen says A7380nms v.1.3 111908
bios agent tells me the bios is bad , under nvidia performance monitor no motherboard manufactor is shown.
not that i matters , its clearly bios related , game freezes , comp freezes when idle , and ill say again i tried going back to all the bios msi homepage can provide v.1.0 v.1.1 v.1.2 v.1.3 no matter wich one i take still freezes , run memtest86 no issues , testet ram in other computer no issues , testet a eah3650 ati card , a gf9600 , and finally a gtx260 , ran /sfc scannow no issues , did i mention that is crashes doing bios start up aswell. i reallly cant find out how to fix this , still running stock speeds didnt touch anything in setup except disabling spread spectrum else i only got 2min uptime and i couldnt write this post in that time plz help.

  • P7N SLi Platinum - Network & (large) Hard Drive Issues

Hello, everyone. I'm hoping someone can help me out here (though I suspect I'm screwed). Several nights ago, I was sitting at my machine playing some Tera when suddenly I got a blue screen. They've been a pretty rare occurrence for this system, but I realize that from time to time, they happen, so I wasn't all that concerned. I just rebooted and figured everything would be back to normal. Unfortunately, I was wrong. Windows (7 - 64bit) took a noticeably longer time to pull up the full desktop and I noticed an error condition on the network icon in the system tray.
Naturally, I pulled up my network settings and Windows told me that I was on an "Unidentified Network" with "No network access." I figured it was possible that I'd nudged the cable or something, so I looked at it and noticed that, instead of a flashing green light on the Ethernet port, it was flashing orange (this board does normally flash green, right?). I changed ports on the switch and when that didn't help, I changed cables. Still nothing. I installed the latest nForce drivers and still nothing.
That's about the time I noticed another problem. I pulled up Windows Explorer to look for something on my data drive (3TB Seagate) and after an inordinately long time, I realized that it wasn't going to come up. I rebooted again and went into the BIOS settings and, to my horror, discovered that the BIOS, which was showing the drive at its correct capacity before, was now showing it as 800GB.
I have NO idea what happened. It's possible there was a power surge (there was a storm in the distance), but the only two things that are affected are the network and that one hard drive. I updated to the latest BIOS and that didn't help at all, either. So... any ideas? Or am I just going to have to track down a new MB?
    Thanks,
    Sam

Far as I know, that board is not capable of properly supporting a HDD over 1TB?

You can try a power off, PSU power cord pulled, battery removed, CMOS clear and settings reset.

  • MSI P7n Sli-Fi + Q9650 OC issues

Alrighty, well i cant seem to get this combination stable here are the specs.
MB - msi p7n sli fi
    CPU - q9650
    RAM - 4gigs of Corsair Dominator pc-8500
    Video - 2 Sli nvidia gts250
at 3ghz on average through Intel Burn Test the q9650 will pull 23gflops, when overclocked to 3.7ghz it will pull 27 this seems as a sign of instability. Battlefield Bad Company 2 will crash occasionally but it will pass 20passes of IBT and 5hours of prime95 blend.
    settings for 3.7ghz (1666fsb x 9)
    cpu vcore + .0250(2 ticks above 0) = 1.275-1.29v seems to have massive v-droop
    Dram 833mhz    voltage 1.95v  6-6-6-18 2t
what is it that is making the clock unstable, the board wont even post at 1600fsb 800mhz ram seems to be a FSB hole =\

I recommend you read the following guide. It may not be the same board, but it covers all the necessary angles to test your components individual capabilities.

    Nvidia 9600 GT

    Initializing USB Controllers ... Done.
    2048 MB OK
Press DEL key to enter Setup Menu, F11 to enter boot menu
    And that's all !!
Can't go further, i tried every slot of ram, they all works, i removed everything, no solution...
I read here and there that it might be a Bios Firmware problem, but is that correct, because i've got no other 775 CPU to boot...
    Thanks for your help!

And last thing, i guess it will work also if i flash with the 1.3 version ? Is there any intrest ?
Yes go for 1.3 it should works.

Or maybe it's possible to flash from a usb key directly from the bios ?
No, but you can do your USB key bootable and proceed with BIOS update.
Prepare the USB key in another mainboard.

  • P7N SLI Platinum Unstable with over 2GB ram and/or dual channel memory on.

Hello need some help or to report something to MSI regarding blue screens, freezes when booting Vista 64 (SP1 + all fixes installed) with more then 2GB ram.  Single channel mode works (either 1 stick of 2 GB or 3 sticks of 2GB) and is rock stable.  Booting with 2 x 2 or 4 x 2 yields instability and blue screens.
I read over Microsoft's hotfix KB929777 however it appears this patch was applied during SP1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929777 - when I attempted to apply this hotfix I got the message this update does not apply to your system.
Memory tested in other gaming system using 4 sticks of G.Skill 1066 DDR2 ram and still have the same issues.  Other forums like Evga.com, Tom's hardware and 411overkill.com tend to suggest some problem with this new bios version 2.0, written by Nvidia.  Some others mention possibly an Nvidia nforce driver issue.
Therefore, under duress during testing - with 1 stick or 3 sticks of ram, all tests perfect and passes all stability tests, good marks in Sandra, plays any game.  With 2 or 4 sticks of ram, very unstable won't stay up but for seconds.
Any ideas?  (Tested 7 ways until Sunday!)
My other rig, rocks solid and stable with Vista 64....  It's the Evga new mainboard 780i with triple SLI (132-CK-NF78-A1), 8gb of Gskill 1066ddr2, MSI 8800GT (x2 sli mode) Q6600 @ 3.2 ghz - Raid 0 on dual WD caviar 640 gb/sata 3.0gb/sec.  Seasonic 700w p/s.  8gb of memory and not a hiccup.  Ram 2.0 volts, cpu @ 1.36v.  Will handle the memory from both systems with out fault.
Considering I can swap memory back and forth and confirm it's not the sticks, swap graphics boards (own 3 of them!) and rule out that....
    Fyi.  Any help is appreciated!

Dump question, but have you pickup the correct update e.g. for 64bit? ==> http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=91672C7C-614B-404C-850C-377541E93C18&displaylang=en
"This comes inside SP1 for vista 64, as noted with my other system during the build. "
    Better double check it.
Install all four memory sticks and do a memory check with >>Memtest86<< 1st, ensure that no error(s) will comes during testing.
    Also how about that?:
Quote from: BOSSKILLER on 07-April-08, 23:55:36
Remove your OC then see how its goes.
"When the system boots in single channel mode (only 2 or 6gb of ram meaning 1 or 3 sticks installed into the 4 slots) its' rock stable.  When it boots into dual channel mode (2 x 2 sticks or 2 x 4 sticks) extemely unstable. "
That means, timings are too tight, or they need a bit more vcore help, or some of the memory stick has failure.
    "MSI P7N SLI Platinum - MS-7380 - Bios 2.0 on Vista Ultimate 64-bit - all updated."
That BIOS is not for your board, you should use 1.xx

Well, first of all, I am new here, so hello to you all guys!
I just purchased the p7n yesterday. I had a P6N SLi-V2 before and wasn't able to get over the 3.0 GHz (stable)! I thought the P7N will a much better overclocker but find myself having a really hard time get it over 3.0 GHz again!?

Man, this turns out  to be like a disaster :S:S I tried everything and now it won't even be stable @ 3.0 GHz with vcore 1.35, vram 2.2, fsb vtt 1.45, nb 1.4 and SB 1.5 (random reboots like crazy!). I have the intention to get some better OC's going from a p6n sli v2 to this board and it's even doing WORSE??????? The only weakpoint I can think about is my single stick 2GB TakeMS pc6400, but I never go over the stock speed of 800 MHz, so can that still be a bottleneck even at stock speed or even lower?
    Any help will be welcome...
I found out the hard way.........if you are not running memory from the QVL  list with this mobo, you will have problems with it. I was running mine with team xtreem 3-3-3-8 microns and all I had was errors and corruption when I overclocked. I had to reformat and switch back to the performance bios and now running corsair dominators 3-4-3-9 and this is the first set that can run at 1200 mhz at 5-5-5-18 2T 2.2 v with the fsb at 1600. I 'm using an E8400. I have read that using non approved memory and this board will not overclock properly.  The only non approved memory that works in my system is geil ultra 8000's and these are the originals running D9GCT's. For stability you should try OCZ, Corsair, Mushkin, Buffalo, Kingston. I have also had problems with crucial ballistix as I've found most of there modules are in someway defective and or not compatible with MSI and have rma multiple sets. I have a previous post going from P6N FI to P7N and have listed all the  memory that I have tried on this board. OCZ and corsair work the best and geil can be used but will not oc past 1142 mhz with stability. I think after a few bios updates this board will be able to use more different types of memory without stability issues.

  • MSI P7N SLI - PC Wont Boot - Video error code but changing graphics card no help

((Apologies, I think this should be in the forum for Intel Core 2 Duo/Quad boards))
Hi. Brief description of the issue.
Last Saturday there was fan noise. I ignored that, left the machine on, went out. By Sunday morning the machine had turned itself off. I opened it up, identified the problem as the graphics card fan, failed to fix but put the PC back on figuring I'd have to see about a new card soonish.
Later on it had turned itself off again. Got to bios with a system32 config error. I figured that was why it'd been shutting off and went through the long process of manual recovery from that. Turned the computer on, all good, played games.
Until I thought to check the GFX temp... 133 degrees Celcius. Turned it off right away, ordered replacement card - which has now arrived.
But the machine won't boot at all. I get one long tone then two short. This is the same with both the old and the new cards. Blue light comes on, all the fans come on, then the beeps.
But the 'long' isn't long like if it was a RAM issue. I'm googling AMI bios post codes and seeing 1 long + 2 short is a video error, but also that '3 beeps' is a memory problem.
I've swapped my RAM sticks around and tried each stick individually and get the same beep code.
I've reset the CMOS by holding in the button on the back for 5 seconds, with the power cable unplugged and after discharging the capacitors.
The only other suggestions I've found is that it could be a failure of the PSU to power the card. But it should be giving ample power.
Now I am stuck for ideas.
    MSI P7N SLI, MS-7380
    Intel Q6600
    Antec Neopower Blue Modular PSU
    Zotac 8800GT [OR Asus GTX 260 212]
    OCZ Platinum 2GB (2*1) DDR2 800
    Western Digital HDD
    LiteOn DVD Rom
    Windows XP

With a 94000GT (no power connector from PSU) the machine is now running.
But there's still a problem somewhere (and that's a pretty poor graphics card I don't want to be stuck with) so I'm still keen to find out what to do, or what's wrong.
My 650W Antec with 2 12 volt rails should have no issues powering the other cards.

Somebody had luck to overclock Q9300 on P7N-SLI Platinum ? please post info

Try with mem settings auto and only adjust Vdimm to vendorspecs.
Did you try BIOS V1.1 from MSI : http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1373
This did solve some memory issues.
If so try, if you can, QVL memory and see if problem persists.
Hope this helps  , good luck and keep us posted
Also be sure that your on manual and not linked, this will give problems too, when fsb divider gets higher then memory divider.
Furthermore, by using non qvl mem, the NB and fsb vtt are very depending on eachother.
I had the same with my board  , the only difference with yours is the cirque pipe cooling and an extra chip for yorkfield support  , but it is do-able

  • MSI P7N SLI Platinum

    Hello,
I have a mainboard MSI P7N SLI Platinum that doesn't boot. I connected it out of the case, tried different CPU's, different PSU's, different graphic cards, different memory modules ... all without success.  When I connect the PSU a red LED goes on, when I try to boot it a blue LED goes on and the CPU cooler starts turning, nothing else happens, no beeps, nothing on the monitor ...
I also tried downloading the latest bios, put it on a floppy and named it AMIBOOT.ROM, than connecting an internal floppy drive and press ctrl-home while powering on (found this hint on the forum).  Nothing happens, nothing on monitor, no activity on floppy drive (even tried different floppy drives and cables  )
Does anyone know something else I can try?

I had this same exact problem today. All seemed to work but nothing on monitor.  I first thought my graphics card is the issue, but the fan was turning so i decided not to think that was it.
I had a dvi to vga adapter on the other end of the  graphics card cable, so i was thinking if that was the issue. I changed the cable to dvi/dvi and WOW, it worked!!!
I dont know if this is the MSI mother board issue or my graphics card CLUB 3D 8800gt, but that fixed it and it has been on for 5 hours now.
But what i came here to ask was the on board LEDS. Is it normal to have RED and BLUE led?
The red led looks like it's a wrning of some kind but it comes on when you turn on the PSU.  So is it ok to have these lighting?

  • MSI P7N SLI-FI LGA 775 nForce 750i startup booting problems

    Hi there!
My PC is about 1.5 years old.
Now last 3 weeks I'm having some frustrating problem when starting my PC.
Issue: my computer starts now only when there is 2 Gb total memory on motherboard.
If there´s 3 Gb or 4 Gb memory on motherboard, then I won´t even get a Bios startup screen.
(but i can see and heard that PSU and CPU fans are working)
I tried all memory modules on, separately using only one memory module. All memory modules and every slot seems to be ok.
I also try Memtest86 (with one memory module Separately) no errors found.
Motherboard PCI-E slots and graphics card are also ok.
(because my PC works like a charm when there´s only total 2 Gb memory on motherboard)
Why my PC only starts when there´s 2 Gb memory on motherboard?
Any help will be appreciated deeply!

I know the 7600GS doesn't recommend a PSU with a lot of power(15 - 17 A), but you're running two of them in SLI.  Your PSU only has 18A on the +12V rail. This could very well be your issue.  Below are some good single +12V rail PSUs, Corsairs and PC Power & Cooling.  You can also look for Silverstone single rail PSUs, but they tend to be pricier.  If you can't get anything other than split-rail, post back and we'll try to make some recommendations.

  • MSI P7N SLI problem, help!

Is there a way to get a bios that has the quad core multiplier issue fixed on a P7N SLI-FI board? I mean, c'mon a fix has existed for the other p7n boards for months now. Isn't there one for my specific board??? I'm about to flash a SLI Platinum Bios into my board just to see if it works, 'cuz I'm loosing it already  . Any help would be greatly appreciated since I can't move my q6600 from it's stock settings, 3600 mhz is a "no go" with my cooler and there seems to be an fsb hole between 1200 to 1600 mhz on my board, I haven't tested every possible fsb setting but I don't want to, I just want to run my cpu at the 8x multiplier  :(

That bios didn't fix the multiplier issue. It's already flashed...
I was thinking that you have missing MP.

What's the problem to do that?

  • P7N SLI + e8400 multiplier

    MSI P7n SLI Platinum V1.1
    E8400 C2D 3.0 E0
    OCZ10662gk 2.1v 5-5-5-15-2T @1066
    Coolermaster 600W PSU SLI certified
2 EVGA 8800 GT in SLi (1 Akimbo version) 600Mhz
    Seagate 250 Gb SATA
I recently tried to upgrade my CPU from e2160 OC @2.7 (1200 FSB) to the new C2D e8400. When I installed BIOS reported the e8400 1333 FSB *6 instead of the 9x multiplier. Giving me 2.0 Ghz CPU instead of the 3.0 I paid for. I get a checksum error when I try to boot to windows (I believe this is because the ram needed 2.1v instead of the 1.9 the BIOS boots up at. I end up making it into windows and find out I need BIOS 1.2 for the e8400. I reboot to check which version I have, and now cant post. All fans and cdrom light up, but no post. I tried hooking up a floppy drive but was unable to get any light on it at all during boot. I tried to do a bios recovery but could not get into Flash recovery mode using a PS/2 keyboard and holding the ctrl and home keys at boot. My cd rom is not SATA and I understand this may be the issue with being unable to do BiOS recovery. I had decided to RMA board, and went and bought another. The closest I could find on short notice was the MSI P7N SLI (non-platinum).
BIOS version on new board was 2.0, after researching I find the BiOS 2.1 is compatible with the e8400. I load my e2160 in set my ram timings and boot fine to windows. I use the USB flash tool in these forums to upgrade to BIOS 2.1 and load up the e8400. BIOS reads CPU as e8400 3.0 @1333, but still I get the 6x multiplier making my CPU a 2.0 again. I get checksum error and raise the ram voltage and input proper timings and reboot. Same issue occurs I check multiplier in BIOS and it is set to 9 but its still reading as 2.0ghz (1333 * 6). I cant boot to windows as the board just powercycles after post. I tried leaving the RAm @667 which is what BIOS reads it at and just upping the voltage to 2.1. Same issue occurs.
I finally gave up reinstalled the e2160, oc'ed it to 1066 (2.4) to match my ram speed and have no issues.
Is the CPU bad? or just not compatible the P7N sli??
Any tips on how to save the Platinum before I mail it off?
Please help as the clock is ticking on my return policies.

Please test your system in barebone configuration:
    - CPU
    - one(!) video card
    - one stick of RAM in the first memory slot
    - keyboard
    - power connectors
    - nothing else (no hard drives, optical drives, no additional cards or RAM modules or USB devices)
Then clear CMOS with main A/C power cabler removed from PSU.  See if the system boots okay.  If it does, add the system hard drive and see if the system if stable.  Make sure you are using the latest BIOS Version for your board revision. If the BIOS Version on the new board was v2.x, it looks that was a P7N SLI (not Platinum) and that makes a difference.
Also, please keep in mind, that the multiplier is automatically reduced to x6 when the system is IDLE (as long as the power saving features are enabled, of course).  This is not a problem but intended behaviour.
