P7N SLI Platinum HDD Issues

Hello,
I recently purchased a 3rd hard drive and ever since I haven't had any luck with my PC booting.
I attempted to boot into Windows with 2 hard drives and it works just fine.
Any combination of the two works, but when all three are plugged in, windows gets stuck on the "Starting Windows" screen, and the BIOS splash screen as well as the screen recognizing the drives/RAM takes noticeably longer.
I've tried IDE/AHCI/RAID, and all of them encounter the same issue. I've downloaded the AHCI drivers off of the MSI website, and I'm really not sure what to do.
I'd love to keep my 3rd hard drive, and I think it's silly to have 4 SATA ports with only 2 being usable.
Not sure what the problem is really, since all the drives get recognized.
Thanks in advance,
Sp1337

After readin the posting guide:
DC OUTPUT       +12V1       +5V       +12V2       +3.3V       -12V       +5Vsb

Sorry won't let me modify post :(
Edit:
It's weird, I can plug in a 3rd hard drive after the PC is booted, and it works just fine, but booting with it in doesn't work.

  • New P7N SLI Platinum Boot Issue with PS/2 Keyboard [Solved but RAID problem now]

This issue taken me back !!!! Never thought I might face issue with a PS/2 Keyboard.
Here it is.. I just assembled my new system...
    P7N SLI Platinum Motherboard
    E8400 CPU
EVGA 256-P2-N751-TR GeForce 8600 GT Video Card
    Creative Soundblaster Audio Card
So, before I boot, I connected good old PS/2 Keyboard. The POST Screen comes up that says Press DEL to enter BIOS Setup... but then, it reboots.. indefinitely... I have no idea why it does that. However, if I boot the PC with no PS/2 Keyboard connected, POST screen comes up and that's it.. (no reboot). So, you see, I cannot proceed further in anyway.... I cannot go beyond POST without a keyboard, but then with the keyboard it reboots indefinitely... kinda catch 22 situation
Any suggestion / ideas that anyone can offer here???

Hello Folks... it took long time to "solve the issue that had to begin with"....
I purchased a cheapo Celeron processor to get into  the BIOS and update it... but it didn't even work... I couldn't boot at all. So, I called MSI and they asked me to RMA it. They replaced my MOBO with the latest BIOS - which was good news
So, now, I'm able to boot  - good news...
Now, this is an upgrade for me.... from my previous MOBO. My boot drive was RAIDed (RAID 0). So, now, I will have to RAID my drives again and run Win XP repair. I was able to RAID my drives and all good... now, I went into Windows installation and did F6 to install NVIDIA Raid.... but, here is my problem, when the prompt asks me to input the floppy drive, and when I did it.... it re-prompts me to put the floppy drive again... I see that the floppy drive is read... but, for some reason it doesn't detect the files in there properly....  I downloaded nVidia C72+MCP55 SATA RAID / AHCI Driver (For floppy driver) for windows xp 32-bit and copied the sataraid folder contents into the floppy. Now, here I am stuck again....
    Anybody experienced this problem?

  • P7N SLI Platinum HDD Seagate 2 TB Baracuda XT Issues

    Hello
I recently purchased a 3rd hard drive- Seagate 2 TB Baracuda XT -but it is not recognized in bios.
I have the latest BIOS version and nforce drivers.
Thanks and please help me i really want to keep this drive

    Quote
    3.2Configuring the drive
Each drive on the Serial ATA interface connects point-to-point with the Serial ATA host adapter. There is no master/slave
relationship because each drive is considered a master in a point-to-point relationship. If two drives are attached on one
Serial ATA host adapter, the host operating system views the two devices as if they were both “masters” on two separate
ports. Both drives behave as if they are Device 0 (master) devices.
Serial ATA drives are designed for easy installation. It is usually not necessary to set any jumpers on the drive for proper
operation; however, if you connect the drive and receive a “drive not detected” error, your SATA-equipped motherboard or
host adapter may use a chipset that does not support SATA speed autonegotiation.
This Seagate HDD apparently doesn't have a jumper like the WD units do to set function. In a way, that's kind of a shame as it says, some chipsets may not support autonegotiation. Might have to check with the chipset vendor as to compatibility of this particular drive.

  • P7N SLI Platinum HDD activity LED

Does anyone know if this take-off point from the motherboard is monitoring anything more than HDD activity? I run XP Pro x64 and my HDD LED is busy all the time, or I should say is constantly going blink, blink-blink, blink... every second approximately and it can be distracting. It does not APPEAR to correlate to actual drive activity (I have 3 HDDs and 2 DVD drives, so my IDE channels are loaded and I have one DVD-drive that's a SATA).
I have tried killing every process, then stopping every XP service until I"m at the minimum necessary to run the OS, but the LED still blinks.
My XP x32 machine (the PT880) does not do this, but I have another PC that's XP w/a non MSI mobo and it does pretty much the same thing (blinks every second or so) so I don't think it has to do with mobo...
    Anyway:
    1. What is the HDD LED take-off point on the mobo monitoring exactly?
    2. Any chance it's erroneously tracking network activity as well as HDD?
    3. Any OTHER place on the motherboard (or a hdd) where I could connect my activity LED?

Do you have some application common to both machines that could be causing it? Something such as anti-virus/spyware, maybe some Norton garbage.
No, nothing. Zero, zip, nada. And I hate AV programs! Like I said too, I tried shutting-down everything until windows was running on fumes...
It does occur to me now though that in the case of both machines whose LEDs flicker, these are (maybe the only two I own, out of 6 or 7) PCs that I keep updated with all the latest MS patches. XP x64 is SP2+ and XP x32 is SP3+. I'll bet the problem came along with one of the updates!!!??!!
Thanks fellas for the sanity check--I'll probably just disconnect the bloody thing!

  • P7N SLi Platinum - Network & (large) Hard Drive Issues

Hello, everyone. I'm hoping someone can help me out here (though I suspect I'm screwed). Several nights ago, I was sitting at my machine playing some Tera when suddenly I got a blue screen. They've been a pretty rare occurrence for this system, but I realize that from time to time, they happen, so I wasn't all that concerned. I just rebooted and figured everything would be back to normal. Unfortunately, I was wrong. Windows (7 - 64bit) took a noticeably longer time to pull up the full desktop and I noticed an error condition on the network icon in the system tray.
Naturally, I pulled up my network settings and Windows told me that I was on an "Unidentified Network" with "No network access." I figured it was possible that I'd nudged the cable or something, so I looked at it and noticed that, instead of a flashing green light on the Ethernet port, it was flashing orange (this board does normally flash green, right?). I changed ports on the switch and when that didn't help, I changed cables. Still nothing. I installed the latest nForce drivers and still nothing.
That's about the time I noticed another problem. I pulled up Windows Explorer to look for something on my data drive (3TB Seagate) and after an inordinately long time, I realized that it wasn't going to come up. I rebooted again and went into the BIOS settings and, to my horror, discovered that the BIOS, which was showing the drive at its correct capacity before, was now showing it as 800GB.
I have NO idea what happened. It's possible there was a power surge (there was a storm in the distance), but the only two things that are affected are the network and that one hard drive. I updated to the latest BIOS and that didn't help at all, either. So... any ideas? Or am I just going to have to track down a new MB?
    Thanks,
    Sam

Far as I know, that board is not capable of properly supporting a HDD over 1TB?

You can try a power off, PSU power cord pulled, battery removed, CMOS clear and settings reset.

  • Does P7N SLI Platinum support Seagate 1.5T HDD?

I installed this harddisk, but strangely, only 1000G is able to be partitioned and formatted. Is it due to some limitations in BIOS 1.3? If so, when 1.4 is going to be released? Thanks in advance for help.

I am using Vista Ultimate, I tried XP as well, both operation system did not have problem of recognizing the size of HDD as 1.5T. But when it comes to partitioning and formatting, problems came. In the beginning, I created partition like C:300, D:300, E:900, and there was no problem to format C and D. And the formating process of driver E got stuck around 40 something percent and never continued. I calculated the percentage and it was at the boundary of 1000G. And after I reboot the system, I lost all the partitions and the entitle harddisk was not recognizable by any operating system. And I have to use the the utility software called seatool under dos to clear the cluster 0 on HDD to reset the HDD info. Now, what I did is creating 3 partitions that use only 1000G, and left 500G unpartitioned. But it is quite annoying that I could not use the last part. It was actually stated at the P7N SLI Platinum BIOS 1.3 info, the BIOS is now supporting 1000G HDD.... I suppose it means up to 1000G. Is there any work around?

  • P7N SLI Platinum Unstable with over 2GB ram and/or dual channel memory on.

Hello need some help or to report something to MSI regarding blue screens, freezes when booting Vista 64 (SP1 + all fixes installed) with more then 2GB ram.  Single channel mode works (either 1 stick of 2 GB or 3 sticks of 2GB) and is rock stable.  Booting with 2 x 2 or 4 x 2 yields instability and blue screens.
I read over Microsoft's hotfix KB929777 however it appears this patch was applied during SP1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929777 - when I attempted to apply this hotfix I got the message this update does not apply to your system.
Memory tested in other gaming system using 4 sticks of G.Skill 1066 DDR2 ram and still have the same issues.  Other forums like Evga.com, Tom's hardware and 411overkill.com tend to suggest some problem with this new bios version 2.0, written by Nvidia.  Some others mention possibly an Nvidia nforce driver issue.
Therefore, under duress during testing - with 1 stick or 3 sticks of ram, all tests perfect and passes all stability tests, good marks in Sandra, plays any game.  With 2 or 4 sticks of ram, very unstable won't stay up but for seconds.
Any ideas?  (Tested 7 ways until Sunday!)
My other rig, rocks solid and stable with Vista 64....  It's the Evga new mainboard 780i with triple SLI (132-CK-NF78-A1), 8gb of Gskill 1066ddr2, MSI 8800GT (x2 sli mode) Q6600 @ 3.2 ghz - Raid 0 on dual WD caviar 640 gb/sata 3.0gb/sec.  Seasonic 700w p/s.  8gb of memory and not a hiccup.  Ram 2.0 volts, cpu @ 1.36v.  Will handle the memory from both systems with out fault.
Considering I can swap memory back and forth and confirm it's not the sticks, swap graphics boards (own 3 of them!) and rule out that....
    Fyi.  Any help is appreciated!

Dump question, but have you pickup the correct update e.g. for 64bit? ==> http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=91672C7C-614B-404C-850C-377541E93C18&displaylang=en
"This comes inside SP1 for vista 64, as noted with my other system during the build. "
    Better double check it.
Install all four memory sticks and do a memory check with >>Memtest86<< 1st, ensure that no error(s) will comes during testing.
    Also how about that?:
Quote from: BOSSKILLER on 07-April-08, 23:55:36
Remove your OC then see how its goes.
"When the system boots in single channel mode (only 2 or 6gb of ram meaning 1 or 3 sticks installed into the 4 slots) its' rock stable.  When it boots into dual channel mode (2 x 2 sticks or 2 x 4 sticks) extemely unstable. "
That means, timings are too tight, or they need a bit more vcore help, or some of the memory stick has failure.
    "MSI P7N SLI Platinum - MS-7380 - Bios 2.0 on Vista Ultimate 64-bit - all updated."
That BIOS is not for your board, you should use 1.xx

  • Having a hard time OC'ing my Q6600 on the P7N SLI platinum!!

Well, first of all, I am new here, so hello to you all guys!
I just purchased the p7n yesterday. I had a P6N SLi-V2 before and wasn't able to get over the 3.0 GHz (stable)! I thought the P7N will a much better overclocker but find myself having a really hard time get it over 3.0 GHz again!?
Tried different versions of the bios (1.0,1.1,P04 and now 2.0) with no succes! Maybe anyone can help me out here and maybe share some bios setup? Will really appreciate it

Man, this turns out  to be like a disaster :S:S I tried everything and now it won't even be stable @ 3.0 GHz with vcore 1.35, vram 2.2, fsb vtt 1.45, nb 1.4 and SB 1.5 (random reboots like crazy!). I have the intention to get some better OC's going from a p6n sli v2 to this board and it's even doing WORSE??????? The only weakpoint I can think about is my single stick 2GB TakeMS pc6400, but I never go over the stock speed of 800 MHz, so can that still be a bottleneck even at stock speed or even lower?
    Any help will be welcome...
I found out the hard way.........if you are not running memory from the QVL  list with this mobo, you will have problems with it. I was running mine with team xtreem 3-3-3-8 microns and all I had was errors and corruption when I overclocked. I had to reformat and switch back to the performance bios and now running corsair dominators 3-4-3-9 and this is the first set that can run at 1200 mhz at 5-5-5-18 2T 2.2 v with the fsb at 1600. I 'm using an E8400. I have read that using non approved memory and this board will not overclock properly.  The only non approved memory that works in my system is geil ultra 8000's and these are the originals running D9GCT's. For stability you should try OCZ, Corsair, Mushkin, Buffalo, Kingston. I have also had problems with crucial ballistix as I've found most of there modules are in someway defective and or not compatible with MSI and have rma multiple sets. I have a previous post going from P6N FI to P7N and have listed all the  memory that I have tried on this board. OCZ and corsair work the best and geil can be used but will not oc past 1142 mhz with stability. I think after a few bios updates this board will be able to use more different types of memory without stability issues.

Somebody had luck to overclock Q9300 on P7N-SLI Platinum ? please post info

Try with mem settings auto and only adjust Vdimm to vendorspecs.
Did you try BIOS V1.1 from MSI : http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1373
This did solve some memory issues.
If so try, if you can, QVL memory and see if problem persists.
Hope this helps  , good luck and keep us posted
Also be sure that your on manual and not linked, this will give problems too, when fsb divider gets higher then memory divider.
Furthermore, by using non qvl mem, the NB and fsb vtt are very depending on eachother.
I had the same with my board  , the only difference with yours is the cirque pipe cooling and an extra chip for yorkfield support  , but it is do-able

    Hello,
I have a mainboard MSI P7N SLI Platinum that doesn't boot. I connected it out of the case, tried different CPU's, different PSU's, different graphic cards, different memory modules ... all without success.  When I connect the PSU a red LED goes on, when I try to boot it a blue LED goes on and the CPU cooler starts turning, nothing else happens, no beeps, nothing on the monitor ...
I also tried downloading the latest bios, put it on a floppy and named it AMIBOOT.ROM, than connecting an internal floppy drive and press ctrl-home while powering on (found this hint on the forum).  Nothing happens, nothing on monitor, no activity on floppy drive (even tried different floppy drives and cables  )
Does anyone know something else I can try?

I had this same exact problem today. All seemed to work but nothing on monitor.  I first thought my graphics card is the issue, but the fan was turning so i decided not to think that was it.
I had a dvi to vga adapter on the other end of the  graphics card cable, so i was thinking if that was the issue. I changed the cable to dvi/dvi and WOW, it worked!!!
I dont know if this is the MSI mother board issue or my graphics card CLUB 3D 8800gt, but that fixed it and it has been on for 5 hours now.
But what i came here to ask was the on board LEDS. Is it normal to have RED and BLUE led?
The red led looks like it's a wrning of some kind but it comes on when you turn on the PSU.  So is it ok to have these lighting?

  • Front Panel Audio - P7N Sli Platinum Question

I am having trouble getting the front panel audio working - I want it set up so that when I plug my headphones in the speakers mute and the headphones take over.
    I have the following:
    Case - ThermalTake Armor VA8003BWS - http://www.thermaltake.com/product/Chassis/fulltower/armor/va8003bws.asp
    MB - P7N SLi Platinum
Sound Card - Create Labs Xfi Gamer
    I have done the following:
    1. Disabled onboard audio in Bios (should I turn this back on?)
    2. Went into Creative Console Launcher and checked the 2 options that I want it to automatically enable headphone settings and mute speakers when headphone jack is connected.
    3. Connected 10 pin wire in case labeled (Azalia) to the motherboards Jaud1 (my MB manual says it is Azalia 1.0 compliant). The case also has an AC'97 connection (on the same wire as Azalia but I didn't use this because of what I read in MB manual about Azalia 1.0 compliant).
    4. The case also came with this 10 pin black block that has all the Azalia descriptions on the side (Port 1 L, Port1 R, Port2 R, Sense_Send, etc. - I tried plugging the Azalia connector into this and then this into the Jaud1 but still nothing).
Not sure if it matters but my headphones are Plantronics Gaming Audio 770 (not USB).
    Any suggestions?

I've just recently had this similar problem. I think the issue in your case is step 3. I believe you should connect the Azalia 10pin wire to your X-fi card, not the mobo.
My problem was that i had connected AC97 10pin wire to my X-fi, after which plugging in my headphones didn't mute my speakers.
That was the problem - works great now!  Thanks

  • HELP!!!!! P7n sli platinum cd-in problem.

    Dear msi members.
I've got a p7n sli platinum board in, but now the cd-in (audio-in) (you know that 4 pinned thing you can connect a dvd drive too) connector on the board is in the way of my gtx 260, "they collide" now my question is, i'm pretty good at soldering, is it safe to unsolder the port completely?
as this way i'd have room for my gfx card.
If it's not. be sure to let me know how i can get this thing out of the way please.
    Thanks in advance, Scorp.
P.s. Thats seriously my only issue, if i remove that thing everything will fit, (and i could mostlikely unsolder it carefully and resolder it should i need to rma). it's just the question that if i remove it completely does the board still run properly?

hello i have the same problem, i recently bought gtx260 to find out the JCD is on the way . I'm using my 2nd Pci-E slot at the moment. i was  reading the forums and find out that this has been affecting many users with similar components, and they say they can remove the plastic as posted on this link http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/showthread.php?p=31163282 i
m not sure if that would void warranty or not

  • MSI P7N SLI Platinum and OCZ DDR2 PC2-6400 SLI-Ready Edition

    Hello,
I have a MSI P7N SLI Platinum nForce 750i SLI motherboard and I would like to inquire if it is fully compatible with OCZ DDR2 PC2-6400 SLI-Ready Edition memory? Firstly, I do not seem to get the correct timings with the default settings, speed is not very good, after 5 hours of running Memtest86+ there was 30 errors. I have never had the memory crash and games seem to run fine, but the memory feels much slower than it should be. Is the memory supposed to work fine with this motherboard and I'm just imagining everything? I don't know if I'm also supposed to be worried by the errors Memtest86+ returned?
Thank you in advance for any help.

Quote from: Del UK on 07-September-08, 05:44:14
    If memtest returned errors, yes
Well, there does not have to be a problem with the memory just because it returned errors. There could be many other explanations why there are errors.
Quote from: Jack the Newbie on 07-September-08, 08:04:45
Jacobl, please post full system specs.  Read the >>Posting Guide<< to get an idea of the details you should provide.
How many modules of what capacity do you have?  What are your current RAM-related BIOS settings?
If you have more than one stick of RAM, please test each stick seperately with memtest86+ and see if the errors are caused by one of the sticks only.  Otherwise there is no way to tell if there is a compatibility problem or just a faulty memory stick.
Please post a link to the OCZ product site and also a screenshot of the CPU-Z "SPD" tab.
    I have this memory: http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/memory/ocz_ddr2_pc2_6400_sli_ready_edition_4gb_dual_channel.
This is the rest of the components as instructed by the forum post you linked to:
    Intel E8200
    MSI P7N SLI Platinum
    OCZ DDR2 PC2-6400 SLI-Ready Edition 4GB Dual Channel
    Gigabyte Geforce 8800GT 512MB PCI
    500GB Western Digital SATA
    SATA DVD burner
    Windows XP SP3
    Antec 500W PSU
I usually troubleshoot components step by step - eliminating all possible reasons until I have found the solution. My first step was to post here to find out if there are any known compatibility issues with the motherboard and memory. I adjusted the memory timings with a slight overclock because the motherboard did not load the default timings by default. I will start by adjusting the BIOS settings, check if the memory is inserted into the right DIMM slots and then test the memory sticks one by one. But to answer my own question: I think the motherboard and memory should have no compatibility issues and it must be something else.

I have the OCZ 6400 Fatal1ty modules 2x2 GB that is very similar of the ones you ask.And they are running perfectly but i must set the epp latency and voltaje values in BIOS! The simple modules of ocz are in the memory compatibilty list i thought that the SLI and Falal1ty modules are just the same with a little boost.
I had to set the right timings also. As far as I know, the SLI and Fatal1ty modules are probably the same, just with a little boost. I think it would be very strange if a module with the name "SLI-Ready Edition" and a Nforce 750i motherboard would not be compatible together.
Anyway, any other advice on what steps I should take? I assume by now that the motherboard and memory should work together without problem. Sorry if I started out bad by not following the posting guidelines on the forum.
