P845t-4310 Laptop screen won't sleep

My laptop screen does not go dark ever. It has been set to go dark after 10 minutes of non-use but it never does. Can someone help me?

My guess is that something you've installed causes this. Does it work after a clean boot?
   1. Open the System Configuration utility (msconfig.exe). You can do that by typing msconfig at the Start screen and pressing Enter.
   2. On the Services tab, set the Hide all Microsoft services check box and then click Disable all.
   3. On the Startup tab, click Open Task Manager, right-click and disable each Startup item. Then close Task Manager.
   4. Back on the System Configuration screen, click OK, and restart the computer.

  • Laptop screen won't turn on after sleep, requires reboot

I close the screen to my Macbook Pro when going to be away for a length of time.  Until recently, the screen would turn on when I opened the computer.  Now, although the computer is on, the screen won't light up when I open it.  The laptop now requires a forced rebook in order for the screen to work.  Will this require a service call?

  • Dual Display - Laptop screen won't wake up 50%+ of the time

My laptop is connected to an external monitor, with the monitor set as the primary display.
I put the laptop to sleep by closing the lid.
Often, when I open the lid the laptop screen will not turn on. Just the monitor, and then it acts as if it is a single display. The only way I've figured out how to fix this is to completely shut down the laptop and boot back up.
This started suddenly last month, right after changing jobs. The new job had an unknown amount of software installed (including MS Entourage) and the entire system encrypted by the new company's IT department. I don't know if these are related, but the coincidence is hard to ignore.
I also will occasionally not be able to fully wake the computer. I'll get a black screen and a mouse cursor but never get the log in prompt to bring it out of screen saver mode. This problem sometimes occurs with the above issue, but often they are separate. Though this also just started. (I suspect this second issue could just be performance problems with new software bogging down the system over several days). Although the same solution is to shut down the system. It's just that in this case, the only way to shut down is to force it with the power button.

I have a similar problem that just started recently. I've been using a dual monitor (Wacom Cintiq) since last Novemeber, and now at random times when I attempt to wake up the computer I get a black screen on both monitors. I know the computer is on because of the system beeps I generate while pressing the keys. The monitor just won't come on. Normally I thought the power light below the latch opening would cycle up and down, while asleep, but when this problem happens it is just on. When the lid is opened the light fades out. Computer is running, just no screen. The last time this happened I had to power it down. I've tried disconnecting the Wacom Cintiq monitor, the external keyboard and the Wacom tablet. No Luck.

  • Laptop display won't sleep

I just upgraded from 10.3.9 to 10.4.8, and I’m almost completely satisfied except for one last thing: I play a MMORPG that runs in full-screen mode, and when I was running 10.3.9, the display eventually became dim and shut down after several minutes in accordance with my preferences in Energy Saver. This is not happening in 10.4.8. What do I do? I jiggered my screensaver and display-sleep times, but this hasn’t worked. Thanks very much. Peace.
PS, how do I get file sizes to display when I do a search in the upper right-hand corner of a finder window like I used to?

I meant to say, there are times that one leaves the game running while one leaves the computer for hours at a time, and the display eventually dimmed and went to sleep while the game was running in full-screen mode. Anyway, the laptop display isn't sleeping since I upgraded to 10.4.8 from 10.3.9, so how should I set my preferences? Peace.

  • Laptop screen won't turn on

Screen won't turn on. Nonlights will light up on the keybaord aside from the WiFi light and power light. Normally there is a light for mute, capslocks and the finger mouse. Tapping any one those buttons does not turn the lights on.

Hi there ,  Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome! I read your post on the HP Support Forums and see that you are having issues with your Notebook PC. I understand that the Notebook PC will not turn on. You had mentioned that the Wi-Fi light and the Power Light do light up on the Keyboard. I  would be happy to assist you, I just need your Model Number (How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?) Please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices, as these could cause some issues. • Laptop screen won't turn back on after being waked up from pm-suspend

I installed pm-utils and acpid to make my laptop sleep when the lid is shut.
To do this I altered my /etc/acpi/handler.sh to look like this
    http://pastebin.com/9DgQQ30Z
    Changing lines 57, 58 and 59 to:
    button/lid)
    #echo "LID switched!">/dev/tty5
    /usr/sbin/pm-suspend
    esac
The laptop suspends completely fine, and the power light turns from a solid light to flashing. But when I open the lid, the laptop wakes up fine, except for the screen which just stays completely black.
I can't do anything to get it back on, I even can't switch to any virtual terminals, forcing me to to a hard reboot.
This happens also when I just run "sudo pm-suspend" normally with the lid open and use the power button to wake back up. Wakes up fine except for the screen.

First thing that would be helpful to know would be to know what kind of computer you have (e.g. model).
I actually had an identical problem with my laptop. It ended up being an issue with the wireless drivers included in the kernel. Ultimately had to blacklist them and install the ones from the vendor's website. Anyways, start with the model, and we can try to help you from there

  • Pavilion dv6-2044ca laptop screen won't turn on, unresponsive

Hi, I have an HP Pavilion dv6-2044ca laptop that was purchased in late 2009, running windows 7. It was working normally the other night when I went to get a drink, and when I came back the screen was off. I couldn't get the screen to turn back on by moving my mouse, so I shut the computer down and restarted it. When I started it back up, it sounded normal, but the screen continued to not turn on. I tried taking out the battery and holding the power button for the power reset method referenced often on these forums, to no avail. I hooked it up to an external monitor but nothing showed up. When turned on, the caps lock and num lock lights won't turn on, however the light indicating it's plugged in, the lights for sound and wifi, and the light indicating the mousepad is turned on all light up. I have made no changes to the hardware or software in weeks. I'm at a loss as to problem solving methods at this point, and would greatly appreciate a more experienced opinion on the matter!
    Kevin

Try a hard reset. Remove battery and AC power. Hold down power button 30 seconds. Now put AC power to it and try to fire it up. It is a 100 to 1 longshot but worth trying. If that does not work it ain't sounding good. Maybe try removing and reseating the RAM sticks, but other than that a new motherboard might be the only fix.

  • Mac laptop screen going to sleep and changing desktop background

last weekend my daughter called to say that her Macbook was acting strange. On Friday night she saw the battery icon said 25%, so she shut the system down. The next morning she plugged it in and booted. It took a while and the desktop background had changed to something grey. Also, the screen would blank out after 30 seconds to a minute. If she hit the space bar it would show and then go black after the 30 to 60 second time period. I had her shutdown and boot to her external drive where she had a month old image of her system. It took a minute or two to boot (it always seems like a long time when you are on the phone). It came up as her normal system and background. She left it for over an hour and it did not black out or go to sleep. We were planning on doing a restore the next day, but when she did a normal boot later that day from the internal hard drive, it came up with her normal background and the screen stayed active. She had not tried to set any settings. Is there something that a low battery would do to change the energy settings? We were going to explore the settings when the system magically worked as normal. It seems strange that a boot to the external drive would restore settings so that the system worked normally.

Energy Saver and third party USB often don't go well hand in hand. I would though contact OWC and let them know you are having this problem, since they have a good track record of supporting the Mac platform. In the meantime, use Screen Saver instead of Energy Saver.
And always keep your data backed up at least twice as my FAQ explains:

  • My Laptop Screen won't turn on upon start up

I have an HP Pavillion DV4 laptop and whenever I turn it on the screen never turns on. So I tried to hold the power button down to completely shut it off. Then I waited about 30 seconds then I turned it on again and the screen still would not turn on. What is the problem here because this is driving me CRAZY. If anyone knows the problem, it would be greatly appriciated.

So, you're able to boot into Windows when using Safe Mode but not normal mode?  To me this implies that the issue is software related.  The most likely cause is the video card driver.  To begin I would suggest trying to reinstall your video card's driver in Safe Mode.
I will be happy to locate this software for you and type out some instructions.  I will need your product number for this.  Take a look at this document to see where to locate your product number.
I will keep an eye out for your reply.  I hope you have a great day!

  • 15Inch G4 laptop screen black after sleep mode

I turned on the laptop and it came up with the log in mode. I realized that I didn't have the log in password so I waited for the owner to come back. 3 hours later I got the password and tried to log in again. but the screen was just black. The light in the front where you flip open the screen was on, pulsating. I tried to hold down the power button for a couple of seconds (15-10 seconds) but nothing happens. I can't start it again, I can't shut it down? am I missing something?
On the bottom of the computer I saw a row of 5 lights. 4 to 5 are on most of the time. I assume that signifies the harddrive is working...? There's also a button next to it. What is that button? Is it some sort of reset button? Should I press that one?
    Any help appreciated.
    thanks
    Power Book G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Hi S K5,
The lights your seeing on the bottom of the PB are actually on the battery. They indicate charge status. The 'button' next to it that I think you are referring to is the release catch for the battery. If you can't login and the PB is not responding when you press the power button you can try pulling the AC power adaptor then removing the battery, however I would at least inform the owner (if you haven't done so already) of this issue before proceeding further. Also, you'll need a dime or something small enough to fit in the slot on the 'button' next to the battery. Turn it in the direction of the 'open' lock icon to release the battery. Then reinsert the battery and try restarting the 'book.

  • Macbook pro Reboot all time after my screen goes to sleep

I've got an important issue, after my laptop screen went to sleep and woke up. The laptop started to pop-up the windows of restart. I pressed cancel, but anyway the laptop shut down. If I try to boot it, it shut down. If I try to recovery, it shut down. If I try to repair, it shut down.  While I am trying to do something to fix it, my laptop shut down. I am not able to do anything and I would like to find the solution to this matter.

half an hour later i found at the problem and fixed (temporarely) the problem.
one of the hinges is not working anymore, just like a car ball hinge.
    to fix it:
    1. unscrew the screen cover and then detach it from the screen (the screws are covered by some plastic or rubber protection)
    2. unscrew the hinge and then pull it sideways until it breaks loose. I used some force, but tried to be careful. (picture 2 and three)
    3. put the cover back on the screen.
    4. either try to get a replacement hinge (the part number can be seen only partlally) or use the screen only with one hinge, which I did. When closing it or adjusting it, just be carefull to hold with the hand the side without a hinge. When fixed it stays there as before.

  • Display won't sleep and screen saver won't sart

I upgraded to the new OS and the display won't sleep and screen saver won't come on. Help please.

    Long shot.
    Do a backup.
    Quit the application.
In Finder hold down the option/alt key while selecting the Go menu item. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart the computer, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you want to make your user library permanently visible, run the below command in Applications/Utilities/Terminal.
    chflags nohidden ~/Library/
You will need to do that after any updates.

  • AppleTV loses streaming connection from laptop - screen-saver/sleep?

    Hi,
I am trying to watching movies saved to my laptop by streaming them directly via AppleTV (initiating through Apple TV interface).
At first, it seems to work fine - the streaming works - but after 15 or 20 minutes, the connection drops and the AppleTV appears to have lost the link to my iTunes account (it asks for me to set up the iTunes account details new).  When I reawake my laptop from sleep and reaccess the AppleTV interface, it 'finds' the link again.
I have experimented by disabling the screen-saver by placing the cursor in the bottom-right of the screen, and the problem does not occur.  Nevertheless this is not a proper fix for the problem.
Can anyone help me find an automated way to stop the laptop from going to sleep or activating the screen-saver when streaming movies from AppleTV, but not when the laptop is not being used?
Thanks in advance for any help.

I have the same issue with my Mac Mini.. Ive gone into the energy saver settings and changed computer sleep to never as well as the display sleep to never but can not get it from disconnecting.,
